Bing Crosby, who was under contract to producer Samuel Goldwyn at the time, would have made a terrific Professor Hobart Frisbee, and many actresses would have brought more personality to Honey Swanson than Virginia. SOFTNESS AND CONFLICT EBB AND FLOW BETWEEN THEM LIKE UNPREDICTABLE TIDES, AS IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. even in their youths, gary galavant could never quite decide if she considered him a friend or if she simply hated everything that he represented, everything about the world in which they were raised that she despised. it’s hardly any different now, he thinks, and he often finds himself transported back, in her presence, to a childhood of EXCITEMENT and UNCERTAINTY. he had cared for her then, in ways that he’d never imagined she could reciprocate - then or now. a more mature version of himself would like to think he’s moved past it, that he is not the sort of man to linger on childish fruitless affection for a girl who surely would not want somebody like him. he’s grown now, a law graduate, a rising star in the political world in which he was raised, a man who often receives more attention than he knows what to do with ; he should not have the time to LINGER in the past.

and yet ...

he hadn’t left her alone all evening, to the best of his ability. by attending the function in the first place, gal knew what a sacrifice she was making for him. that’s how things are between them, how they ALWAYS were ; they bicker and argue and yet the consistency between them seems not to have wavered in the interim. ( they lost contact when she ran from the family slipped into obscurity, only encountering one another again by chance. ) there was never anybody he’d been able to depend on quite like her - not to be present and certainly not for the TRUTH. even now, he feels guilt for asking her along in the first place, knowing perfectly well the request had been ever so selfish, that he’d been unnerved by the concept of selling himself as a new candidate and gravitated toward what comforted him, without stopping for a moment to think about any of the IMPLICATIONS of that, one way or another. they’d stuck to each other like glue as often as they could, and while he could not stop feeling utterly calmed and grateful for her presence, a part of him feels almost like a villain.

now they stand outside the door to her apartment, his suit jacket draped over his arm and his other hand shoved deep into the pocket of his pants. paige fiddles with her keys for a few moments ; if gal didn’t know better, he’d think she was STALLING, and he tries not to let the thought make his heart leap in his chest. ( father always used to warn him against becoming a romantic fool but gal had never quite been able to listen. ) for a beat, and then another, he lingers before letting a breath out and summoning a smile to his face.

❝ thank you, paige. I know it wasn’t ideal, that it wasn’t somewhere you ... wanted to be, but ... you’ve NO IDEA how much it means to me that you came with me. I would have drowned out there without you. ❞ the words feel hollow without the real meaning behind them, without the thousand confessions filed away and stored throughout the many years of their strange friendship, without mentioning the way she’d made his heart race in that dress from the beginning of the evening. he wills his concrete feet to move, first shifting side to side before taking a single step toward her and catching her hand, bringing her knuckles to his lips for a single soft kiss. ❝ I owe you dinner. and I’ll be by the bar this week. ❞

he has only just turned half away when he hears it. his chest tightens and his breath stops for a moment. time seems to slow as he turns his gaze back to her, finding her blinking up at him with those impossible doe eyes wide. paige swanson rarely looks VULNERABLE and it takes him momentarily aback, even though there’s no part of it that doesn’t make sense after the evening they’ve had. the rational part of him remains certain she simply craves support after a situation that he was callous enough to put her in, does not dare to hope that there could be some reason she asks him to stay behind - but he’s never been able to quite shake the romantic notions that always gather in the back of his mind. COULD IT BE THAT HE IS SOMEBODY THAT SHE COULD LOVE?

I’ve nothing to wear, so I hope you won’t be scandalized if I sleep in an undershirt and briefs. ❞

In a world filled with hurried eaters and on-the-go meal options, one woman is taking a stand for a classic breakfast staple: the pancake.

Irene Swanson of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota is known as the “Pancake Lady” for her dedication to making pancakes from scratch every morning, flipping each one by hand.

“I just love pancakes,” she told the Detroit Lakes Tribune. “I’ve been making them since I was a little girl.”

Swanson, who is in her 70s, has been making pancakes for her husband, Gary, every morning for the past 50 years. But it wasn’t until recently that she started getting attention for her unique breakfast routine.

In 2016, a friend posted a photo of Swanson flipping pancakes on Facebook, and the post went viral. Since then, she’s been featured in news articles and even had a pancake breakfast in her honor.

Despite her newfound fame, Swanson says she has no plans to change her breakfast routine.

“I’ll keep flipping pancakes as long as I can,” she said.

Sunset Blvd., with the abbreviation, is the "official" title because it's the only way we see it in the credits of the film: as a shot of the street name stenciled on a curb. So from the beginning we are all in the gutter, and later we are looking at the stars -- or at least one fading star, Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Accepting the role of Norma was a truly courageous act by Swanson: She must have known that it was the part of a lifetime, but that posterity would remember her as the campy has-been silent star, and not as the actress who had a long and distinguished career, playing both comedy and drama with equal skill, or as the spunky title character of Sadie Thompson (Raoul Walsh, 1928), which earned her her first Oscar nomination. The role of Norma Desmond might have won her an Oscar if it hadn't been for another star whose career was beginning to fade: Bette Davis, who was nominated for All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz). The conventional wisdom has it that Swanson and Davis split the votes, allowing Judy Holliday to win for Born Yesterday (George Cukor). This was also a landmark film for William Holden, who had been an unremarkable leading man until his performance as Joe Gillis established his type: the somewhat cynical, morally compromised protagonist. It would earn him an Oscar three years later for another Wilder film, Stalag 17 (1953), and would be his stock in trade through the rest of his career, in films like Picnic (Joshua Logan, 1955), The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean, 1957), The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah, 1969), and Network (Sidney Lumet, 1976). Holden almost didn't get to play Gillis; Montgomery Clift was offered the role but backed out. One story has it that Clift thought the role, of a man out to get the money of a woman he doesn't love, was too much like one he had just played, in The Heiress (William Wyler, 1949), while others have said that he backed out because the story of a man's affair with an older woman would remind people of his own earlier affair with the singer Libby Holman, 16 years his senior. There is in fact an unfortunate whiff of disapproval in Wilder's treatment of the age difference between Norma Desmond and Joe Gillis -- Norma is said to be 50, which was Swanson's age when the film was made, while Holden, who was 32, was made up to look even younger. Wilder, it must be observed, seemed to have no problems when the age difference was reversed, as in his 1954 film Sabrina, in which a 54-year-old Humphrey Bogart romances a 25-year-old Audrey Hepburn, or the 1957 Love in the Afternoon, with 28-year-old Hepburn and 56-year-old Gary Cooper. Sunset Blvd. remains one of the great movies, with its its superb black-and-white cinematography by John F. Seitz. It won Oscars for the mordant screenplay, the art direction, and the score. It's also one of the few films to receive nominations in all four acting categories: In addition to Swanson and Holden, Nancy Olson and Erich von Stroheim received supporting player nominations, but none of them won.
