Feathursday Pheasants!

This week we bring you a few Pheasants from around the world as published in the 1936 publication Pheasants Their Lives and Homes by the eminent zoologist and explorer William Beebe, published in Garden City, N.Y. by Doubleday, Duran & Company under the auspices of the New York Zoological Society, where Beebe was director of the Department of Tropical Research.

In 1910, Beebe led a major, 17-month, worldwide expedition for the New York Zoological Society to document the world's pheasants. "The urgency of this journey sprang from the fact that the members of this most beautiful and remarkable group of birds are rapidly becoming extinct, so that the record of their habits and surroundings, which is important to understanding their structure and evolution, will soon be lost forever."

The resulting publication was the 4-volume A Monograph of the Pheasants, published in London by H. F. Witherby for the New York Zoological Society, 1918-1922. The abridged version, Pheasants Their Lives and Homes, first came out in 1926. This is the 1936 edition. The images shown here are by naturalist artists Louis Agassiz Fuertes, Henrik Grønvold, Henry Jones, Charles R. Knight, and George Edward Lodge.

"Arms are so difficult to draw"...

While the Duke and Duchess of York (the future King George V and Queen Mary) were away on a royal tour in 1901, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra commissioned an artist, Mrs. Gertrude Massey, to paint miniature portraits of their children, David, Bertie, Mary and Harry, as surprise gifts for them on their return. Mrs. Massey spent a lot of time with the children and got to know them well, and they became very fond of her.

In her memoir, Kings, Commoners and Me (1934), Massey described each of the children. She saw Prince Edward (David) as the "the most interesting" and Princess Mary as "the most mischievous".

As for little Bertie, she related a story of how one day he asked if he could draw her, "for a change", and she obliged him. As he drew, she observed "His face was so expressive, one could almost read his thoughts." His expression showed that he was pleased with his drawing, except for one thing.

"Would you mind if I don't give you any arms?'' he asked. "Arms are so difficult to draw."

I enjoy reading about these little moments throughout his life when Bertie's creative side would shyly show itself. I think he did have a creativity about him; he just didn't really get a lot of opportunity to explore it. Although he was never interested in fine arts and culture the way his younger brother the Duke of Kent was, I think he enjoyed designing and creating and was proud of these accomplishments in his humble way.

For instance, he loved landscape gardening, (once he wrote a letter in the "language of Rhododendrum"!). He did needlepoint, and created a set of 12 chair covers for Royal Lodge. He also designed the George Cross and George Medal himself. And of course there was his life long interest in photography and filming, which I can particularly relate to and understand. Even during his last Sandringham Christmas, King George designed trousers to be worn with the Order of the Garter robes instead of the traditional knee pants and Prince Philip photographed him wearing them. It has been repeated often that when he got interested in something, he was all in! That is the essence of a creative spirit, in my eyes.

What a sweet, sensitive soul.

Those chronicles that give a date for Edward (IV) and Elizabeth (Woodville)’s marriage each specify the same one: 1 May. This date is compatible with the known movements of Edward, who was at Stony Stratford the night of 30 April 1464 and could have made an excursion to and from Grafton that morning, as claimed by Fabyan in the sixteenth century:

   [I]n most secret manner, upon the first day of May, King Edward spoused Elizabeth […] which spousals were solemnised early in the morning at a town called Grafton, near Stony Stratford; at which marriage were no persons present but the spouse, the spousess, the Duchess of Bedford her mother, the priest, two gentlewomen, and a young man to help the priest sing. After which spousals ended, he went to bed, and so tarried there three or four hours, and after departed and rode again to Stony Stratford, and came as though he had been hunting, and there went to bed again. And within a day or two after, he sent to Grafton to the Lord Rivers, father unto his wife, showing to him he would come and lodge with him a certain season, where he was received with all honour, and so tarried there by the space of four days. In which season, she nightly to his bed was brought, in so secret manner, that almost none but her mother was of counsel.

Several historians, however, have questioned the May Day date. As David Baldwin notes, ‘The idea of a young, handsome king marrying for love on Mayday may have been borrowed from romantic tradition’. J.L. Laynesmith agreed that ‘1 May is a suspiciously apt day for a young king to marry for love. May had long been the month associated with love, possibly originating in pre-Christian celebrations of fertility and certainly celebrated in the poetry of the troubadours’. Moreover, there are documentary reasons to be wary of the May Day date. On 10 August 1464, Edward signed a document giving Hastings the wardship of Thomas Grey. Wardships were lucrative commodities; if Elizabeth was already married to the king, it seems likely, as Michael Hicks has pointed out, that she would have asked to keep the wardship for herself. Furthermore, on 30 August 1464, Edward granted the county of Chester to his brother George, Duke of Clarence, apparently in his capacity as heir apparent. Such a grant would seem unnecessary if Edward had just married a lady who could be expected to provide him with an heir of his own body.

Whether the couple were married on May Day or later, the scant record does bear out Hall’s claim that a priest was present at the wedding. A Master John Eborall, whose church of Paulspury was close to Grafton and Stony Stratford, is said to have offered in 1471 to intercede in a land dispute involving the queen ‘supposing that he might have done good in the matter, forasmuch as he was then in favour because he married King Edward and Queen Elizabeth together’ A chronicle known as Hearne’s Fragment adds that the priest who married the couple was buried at the high altar of the Minories in London, but leaves a blank space for the man’s name.”

Biting. Henry V will bite.

omg they were tomb mates: probably not but there's a story that's Courtenay's body was actually found within Henry V's tomb. just two dudes sharing a tomb...

Oxford university: Courtenay was chancellor of Oxford and had a fairly... interesting career that included fleeing from Lollard students attacking his lodgings and being threatened by the Archbishop of Canterbury with excommunication by resisting his attempts to root heresy out (he also threatened to excommunicate the Archbishop of Canterbury in turn). He also started efforts to establish a library at Oxford that was assisted by Henry. Also, there's a story that Henry V studied at Oxford that's still perpetuated by Oxford but historians don't think that's true.

booty shorts. In Lenten purple with a Lenten message. Courtenay is a bishop, after all.

The hottie and the nottie. Richard Courtenay was reputedly pretty, Henry V was not.

Money problems. Henry V was pretty broke for most of his time as Prince of Wales, probably because his father was pretty broke as king. Things did not really improve when Henry was in charge of the finances but at least he had experience in living life on a shoe-string. Courtenay was the treasurer of Henry's household as king. Courtenay also had money problems. He died owing Henry money. He owed Oxford money for his room rent. He spent so much while on embassy in France (on vases! and planetary calculators!) that he had to borrow money to go home.

Herbert. Is a weird little dog on the tomb of William Courtenay, Archbishop of Canterbury and Courtenay's uncle and foster-father. He probably had nothing to do with Courtenay/Henry but we felt like he had to be involved. (n.b. I made up his name.)

Monster cans. Sadly, Henry and Courtenay died before they could discover coffee or energy drinks but I like to think in a modern AU, they would be the Eldritch beings whose coffee orders terrify baristas and would drink Monster and only Monster when they weren't terrifying baristas.

Out of a most tender love... here's the anonymous author of the Gesta Henrici Quinti on Courtenay's death and Henry's order for him to be buried in the shrine of Edward the Confessor.

The Prick of Conscience. A serious medieval religious text. Why are you laughing.

Ottery St Mary. Courtenay granted a manor to the church at Ottery St Mary so that they would celebrate a mass daily for his and Henry's good estate and for their souls after death. He granted this three months before he died. 🥺

astrology. Courtenay was into it (or used it as a cover for his spying on the French), Henry was suspicious of it.

Swans. Both of them were descended from the de Bohuns and both appear to have used the swan badge for themselves.

face hole. Henry took an arrow to the face (to the depth of 6 inches) at the Battle of Shrewsbury.

embracing in the fires of hell. so, yes, they were medieval Catholics which probably means they had a medieval Catholics understanding of sin. Still, at least when you're burning in the fires of hell, you're still cuddling your bestie <3

matching rings. On the left, the gold relic ring that was found in Courtenay's grave set with an oval ruby. On the right, a detail of Henry V's hands in the earliest known copy of his portrait in which he wears a gold ring set with an oval ring. Is it the same ring or did they just have matching rings? Who knows.

Tomb of Henry V. see above, re: tomb sharing. Courtenay is buried under the steps up to the chantry chapel so his grave is also in this picture.

Patron saints. It's a picture of St Sebastian (gay icon) and St George (Henry's patron saint). I like to think that Henry had a lot of thoughts about St Sebastian given the whole arrow to the face thing.

One of the most loving and the dearest of the king's friends. The author of the Gesta Henrici Quinti on Courtenay.

Tennis balls. The tennis ball incident, or something like it, probably did happen and given Courtenay was closely involved in Henry's embassies in France, he probably knew All About It.

Bad hair. Henry's got the bowl cut, Courtenay probably had the bowl cut with tonsure. I like to think Courtenay made it work but lbr who did.

Two idiots, one hole. It them ❤️

Matching t-shirts. Henry is the cheetah that's threatening to go crazy, Courtenay the dog that's keeping him from going crazy in captivity. You wouldn't separate them, would you?

• Winston Churchill described ‘an air of authority and reflectiveness astonishing in an infant’ when Elizabeth was only 2½

• In 1929, she appeared on the cover of Time, which reported that the Duchess of York’s preference for the colour yellow for her daughter’s clothes and the decoration of her nursery had set a trend across America

1930s

• George V (‘Grandpa England’) dies on January 20, 1936. Unable to face ruling without Wallis Simpson by his side, Elizabeth’s uncle, Edward VIII, submits his abdication on December 10, before broadcasting his decision to the nation the following day

• The first Pembroke Welsh corgi, Dookie, arrives at Royal Lodge in the summer of 1933, bred by Miss Evans of Rozavel Kennels in Reigate. He was later joined by Jane

• On her fourth birthday, Elizabeth receives a pony from her grandfather. In 1932, the people of Wales build Y Bwthyn Bach (the Little House) for her—it still stands in the Windsor grounds

• In early 1933, a new governess arrives: Marion Crawford (‘Crawfie’). She remains until her own wedding in 1947, shortly before Elizabeth’s

• In 1942, her father shows her the royal racehorses in training. After patting the King’s Derby runner, Big Game, Elizabeth doesn’t wash her hands for the rest of the day. A horse of her own comes in the form of a wedding present from the Aga Khan and her racing colours of purple body, scarlet sleeves and black velvet cap—the same as her father’s—are registered in 1949

• April 25, 1942: Princess Elizabeth signs up for war service

• August 25, 1942: Prince George, Duke of Kent, Princess Elizabeth’s uncle, is killed in a flying accident over Morven in Scotland at the age of 39

• November 1943: the Daily Mail reports that Elizabeth had hunted with the Garth Foxhounds and the Duke of Beaufort’s Hounds ‘in accord with the general policy of making her life as “normal” as possible’

• December 25, 1957: the first Christmas Message is broadcast on television for the first time (it was live)

1960s

• The birth of Prince Andrew represents the first child born in a ‘family on the throne’ since Princess Beatrice in 1857

• A photograph taken by Prof John Hedgecoe at Buckingham Palace on June 22, 1966, serves as a model for sculptor Arnold Machin. It has now been reproduced more than 200 billion times on currency and stamps

• Princess Margaret (1960) and Princess Alexandra (1963) are married at Westminster Abbey

• In 1960, it is announced that descendants of the Queen who did not bear the title HRH and females who might marry would henceforth carry the name Mountbatten-Windsor

• The State Opening of Parliament is televised for the first time in 1966

• The Duke and Duchess of Windsor attend the unveiling of a plaque honouring Queen Mary in 1967

• In 1969, an all-party commission of MPs is set up to look into the Civil List allowance—its report comes in 1971

1970s

• In 1970, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Capt Cook’s voyage, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visit Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand and Australia. Three months later, Fiji and Tonga declare their independence

• From 1970, Prince Charles and Princess Anne have increasing public roles

• In 1970, the Queen unveils the second portrait of her by Annigoni

• That year, the Queen grants a Royal Charter to the Jockey Club, the first governing body of any sport to be accorded such an honour • The committee reviewing the Civil List reports in 1971 and increases the Queen’s allowance from £475,000 to £980,000 per year (it hadn’t been reviewed since her accession). There is no allowance for her personal use. In 1975, it’s raised to £1.4 million

• The Duke of Windsor dies on May 28, 1972—the Duchess stays at Buckingham Palace for the funeral. Prince William of Gloucester, the Queen’s cousin, is killed in a flying accident

• The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh celebrate their silver wedding anniversary in 1972. At a lunch to mark the occasion, the Queen says: ‘I think that everybody will concede that, on this of all days, I should begin my speech “My husband and I”’

• On November 14, 1973, Princess Anne marries Capt Mark Phillips in Westminster Abbey—the first time a member of the Royal Family has married a commoner (it’s also the birthday of Prince Charles and the Archbishop of Canterbury)

• In 1974, a kidnap attempt of Princess Anne is foiled. The Queen’s uncle, the Duke of Gloucester dies that year

• In 1976, Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon announce their marriage is over—they divorce in 1978

• In her Silver Jubilee year, the Queen travels 56,000 miles around the South Pacific and to 36 counties in Britain. Her Jubilee Appeal to ‘help young people help others’ raises £16 million

1980s

• In 1980, more than two million people line the streets of London to see the Queen Mother pass on her way to a service to celebrate her 80th birthday

• On May 15, 1981, the Queen again becomes a grandmother, when Princess Anne gives birth to Zara

• In 1982, Prince Andrew takes part in the Falklands War

• On July 9, 1982, the Queen awakes to find Michael Fagan in her bedroom

• The Waleses’ second son, Henry (Harry), is born on September 15, 1984

• In 1986, Prince Andrew marries Sarah Ferguson—a ‘breath of fresh air’—in Westminster Abbey and becomes The Duke of York

• That year, the Duchess of Windsor dies and is buried with her husband at Frogmore,

• Also in 1986, the Queen becomes the first British monarch to visit China—crowds welcome ‘the English country female King’

• Princess Beatrice is born on August 8, 1988

• The Princess Royal and Capt Mark Phillips separate in late August 1989

1990s

• Princess Eugenie is born on March 23, 1990

• On a state visit to the US in 1991, the Queen becomes the first British monarch to address Congress

• The end of 1992 brings some good news as The Princess Royal marries Commander Tim Laurence in Scotland

• In 1994, The Prince of Wales appears in a frank—and ill-advised—television interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, in which he admits adultery

• In October that year, the Queen becomes the first reigning British monarch to set foot on Russian soil

• The Duke and Duchess of York are divorced in May 1996

• When on holiday in Mustique in 1998, Princess Margaret suffers a stroke

• In 1997, extension work begins on The Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace, tripling its size

• Prince Edward marries in St George’s Chapel, Windsor (June 19, 1999)

2000s

• It was an eventful time in 2000: Princess Margaret celebrated her 70th birthday, The Princess Royal her 50th, Prince William his 18th and, on August 4, the Queen Mother her 100th—she’s one of 12 centenarians to get a card from the Queen, but hers was the only one signed ‘Lilibet’

• As part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, the Queen dines at 10, Downing Street with the five living former Prime Ministers who had served under her: Tony Blair, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, James Callaghan and Edward Heath • Lady Louise Windsor is born on November 8, 2003

• Prince William graduates from St Andrews University on June 23, 2005

2010s

• Prince William marries Catherine Middleton in Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011, and is created Duke of Cambridge

• The Queen’s first great-grandchild, Savannah, the daughter of Peter Phillips, is born on December 29, 2010

Windsor was river born and river named. The stream is winding, serpentine; the bank by which it rolls was called the “winding shore.” The fact, common to all countries, gives a name which is common to all languages. Snakes, dragons, serpentines, are names of winding rivers in every latitude. There is a Snake river in Utah, another Snake river in Oregon; there is a Drach river in France, another Drach river in Switzerland. The straits between Paria and Trinidad is the Dragon’s Mouth; the outfall of Lake Chiriqui is also the Dragon’s Mouth. In the Morea, in Majorca, in Ionia, there are Dragons. There is a Serpent islet off the Danube, and a Serpentaria in Sardinia. We have a modern Serpentine in Hyde Park!

Ages before the Normans came to Windsor, a Saxon hunting-lodge had been erected in the forest; not on the bleak and isolated crest of hill, but by the river margin, on “the winding shore.” This Saxon lodge lay hidden in the depths of ancient woods, away from any public road and bridge. The King’s highway ran north, the Devil’s Causeway to the south. The nearest ford was three miles up the stream, the nearest bridge was five miles down the stream. A bridle-path, such as may still be found in Spain or Sicily, led to that Saxon lodge; but here this path was lost among the ferns and underwoods. No track led on to other places. Free to the chase, yet severed from the world, that hunting-lodge was like a nest. Old oaks and elms grew round about as screens. Deep glades, with here and there a bubbling spring, extended league on league, as far as Chertsey bridge and Guildford down. This forest knew no tenants save the hart and boar, the chough and crow. An air of privacy, and poetry, and romance, hung about this ancient forest lodge.

Seeds of much legendary lore had been already sown. A builder of that Saxon lodge had been imagined in a mythical king—Arthur of the Round Table, Arthur of the blameless life—a legend which endures at Windsor to the present day. There, Godwin, sitting at the king’s board, had met his death, choked with the lie in his wicked throat. There, Edward the Confessor had lisped his prayers, and cured the halt and blind. There, too, the Saxon princes, Tosti and Harold, were supposed to have fought in the king’s presence, lugging out each other’s locks, and hurling each other to the ground. Of later114 growth were other legends; ranging from the romance of the Fitz-Warines, through the Romaunt of the Rose, down to the rhyme of King Edward and the Shepherd, the mystery of Herne the Hunter, and the humours of the Merry Wives.
