ERIC RAVILIOUS

Here are a couple of small wood engravings by the noted English designer, painter, and wood engraver Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) illustrating English poet Harold Monro’s (1879-1932) poem Elm Angel, published in London by Faber and Faber as No. 26 in The Ariel Poems series in 1930. The edition was limited to 250 numbered copies on English handmade paper, and our copy is signed by the poet. Ravilious was one of the most significant wood engravers of his generation, despite dying at the age of 39 when his plane vanished over the north Atlantic during WWII.

SENSORY  DETAILS  FOR  YOUR  MUSE 

SCENT: it gets caught up in his hair most of the time, so when he's ruffling it up for autism purposes he's also ruffling up the scent. it's earthy but only ever so slightly, overpowevered by flora. depending on where he was, the scents can range from a blooming meadow, pine forests or even just specific flowerbeds he's encountered. it's the most tangible way he carries the whole wide world with him wherever he goes.

TOUCH: he is warm to the touch, first and foremost. all of him is ever so gentle when coming in physical contact with the world (and through the physical contact he really does encounter the world better, considering he sees so much of the world unfurl before his eyes in ways humans couldn't comprehend but touch is simple, touch makes sense, touch pinpoints the boundary between the me & the you, but in a way that the boundary does not get in the way. it's the point where love is stored. ANYWAY.) he picks physical objects up gently with just his fingertips if he can as if he is scared to hold onto them too closely, too crudely. his hands are covered with callouses and little scars that happened overtime because he refuses to wear gloves to do physical work, and the little cuts and such they are a fond memory of mostly some plant or another..

HAIR: curly and soft. can be shorter (though never short enough not to be curly), or up to his shoulders in length, depending on the way he feels like having it at the moment. there is always that one runaway curl falling in his face, he sometimes tucks it away, sometimes does not.

VOICE: deep and always controlled, never sounding like he is speaking fully at a volume he could. it has to do with him prefering the more close encounters rather than speaking to a crowd. he doesn't have an easily discernible accent but he does have a fairly odd speech pattern, making pauses and stops all too often in his sentences, or speaking in very short sentences, simply because it's difficult to follow this linear act of expression. it's a similar problem as he has with reading, for similar reasons..

FACE: i will hijack this area to say a little about emmanuel's body. he's made up this face and this body himself, hence why the body is at points slightly not right. he tried his best but his knowledge of human souls is better than that of their physique. the face is good because he's modelled it after a human, a human that went missing from his group at the very beginning of humanity. the human was travelling with his child when there was something luring him astray to his death. he's left the child behind, worried to bring them in face of danger but instead put them in danger by abandoning them entirely. emmanuel saw this and felt he needed to act. in order to comfort the little child, he'd made his form after her father's face and led her to safety. there he disappeared, unable and unwilling to take on a life of a human, but glad to have helped. he's sentimental for this face of a man long dead, and rarely changes it, unless he needs to. (he can take on the form of a woman or a child, if these bring more comfort to whoever he is facing)

TASTE: cosmic. like kissing sunlight through particles of space dust.

CLOTHING: he wears loose clothes to hide the irregularities of his human form, & enjoys layering clothes sometimes in ridiculous ways. sometimes it's just cute. he wears cottons & linens or whatever is natural and feels good upon his skin (he assumes it should feel good even to others, touching him). seeing as he is agender, he wears purely masculine clothes only when he feels he has to in order to do his job well (he needs to invoke trust in people, first and foremost). when he has a choice he prefers the gender neutral options, with blouses, loose dresses & flowy skirts being some of the favourites. his most beloved item of clothing is however a jumper. he has a collection of them, most of them hand-knitted for him by a friend.
