"Hi, Hyung." A rain soaked Y/N smiled, laughing when Minho ushered him and Hyunjin into the dorm. "What's the rush?"
"You could get sick!" Minho scolded. "Go and shower quickly."
"Gosh, you sound like Eomma." Hyunjin snorted.
"I won't be needing dinner today, hyungs. I'm going to meet Jaemin."
"Okies!" Minho called, and Y/N went to shower. He got dressed and left the dorm, making sure to take an umbrella. He went to the restaurant and scrolled on his phone, waiting for Jaemin and the friends he said he'd bring.
"Y/N!" Jaemin called, making his way over. Y/N stood up, greeting Jaemin and introducing himself to the others.
"Hi, I'm Y/N from the new group Stray Kids."
"Jaemin talks about you alot." Mark said, and Jaemin snorted.
"Shut up. I don't."
"It's nice to see you again, hyungie." Y/N told Jaemin.
"Alright, guys, introduce yourselves." Jaemin told the three boys.
"I'm Mark."
"Chenle."
"I'm Jisung." Jisung smiled, and Y/N smiled too.
"It's nice to meet you and all..." He began awkwardly. "But I'm hungry."
The table laughed, and they all sat down to order.
Once the food arrived, everyone dug in, and began chatting.
"So how did you get put in Stray Kids?" Mark asked. "When I watched their survival show their were eight of them, and I never heard or saw you."
"JYP decided to put me in right before debut." Y/N chuckled. "We hit it off immediately."
"I used to have a friend with your name when I was five." Jisung said. "He also had an older brother called Jaemin."
"How oblivious can you be?" Y/N asked. "Isn't it obvious that it's me?"
"O-Oh." Jisung turned red, choking on his food. Chenle and Mark laughed at him, Jaemin patting his back.
"Well, you bad a glow up while we were apart, definitely." Y/N said cheekily. "Jaemin Hyung didn't, though."
"Hey!"
Jisung cornered Y/N after dinner, while they were walking home.
"Hey, can I have your number?"
"Oh, sure." Y/N took Jisungs phone and typed his number in, sending a message to himself to make sure. He gave Jisungs back the phone and walked alongside him. "Is Jaemin as annoying as I remember?"
"Yeah." Jisung said. "He constantly says sexy."
"He used to do that when we were fourteen and twelve." Y/N remembered. "I thought he stopped, though."
"Nope." Jisung popped the 'p'. "It was nice seeing you again, I'll text you later."
"Bye." Y/N said, entering the apartment complex of SKZ dorm.
"So, how was dinner?" Chan asked.
"I met my childhood best friend." Y/N said. "Park Jisung from NCT."
"You already have Han Jisung." Han said. "Why do you need Park Jisung?"
"Well... I met him before you, pabo." Y/N shot back. "Also, don't you have somewhere to be?"
"Ohhhh, right!" Jisung said, ears turning red and speeding off.
"What?" Chan asked. "Where's he going?"
"He has a date with Hyun." Y/N whispered. "He nearly forgot."
"What's your relationship with Josung?" Seungmin asked teasingly. "Do you like him?"
"Shut up idiot. I haven't seen him since we were five."
"Well... That's interesting." Aeungmin said. "Who's betting they get toghetr in the next year or so?"
Everyone except Y/N raised their hands, so be signed and went to his and Jeongin's room. He could.hear catcalling from the living room, as his members teased him.

Just finished reading the updates on Regressor Instruction Manual manhwa I purposely stock it up to binge read, and, well... spoiler alert if you haven't finished season 2 of the Manhwa.
From what I can assume...
Park Deokgoo was Lee Kiyoung moral compass, or at least, what's holding Lee Kiyoung from going to the deep end of no return. In the first first life, things were tough, yes, and they struggled, true. Lee Kiyoung is still scheming and calculating, but Park Deokgoo is there to keep his conscience intact, somewhat. He's still happy and have a good time, not deranged or full of vengeance or madness to kill everyone.
But then, the world in the first timeline is pretty ruined. The Masked-Man is obviously Lee Kiyoung, but he's not someone who would have cause mass destruction unless provoked. Lee Kiyoung is petty. He pays back ten fold the slight people done to him. He does thinks to his benefits, or countering what others did to him.
In the first timeline, Park Deokgoo DIED. Protecting him. There were people hunting them down. Lee Kiyoung would have targeted everyone, starting from mere pawn soldiers all the way to the higher-ups who ordered for the hunt/mess. Heck, with Park Deokgoo no longer there to ground him, to keep him from straying too far, Lee Kiyoung would go as far as destroying the world for his pain.
Thus, he became the Masked-Man.
Kim Hyunsung worst adversity.
Park Deokgoo is essential for Lee Kiyoung, if only for his mental side because Park Deokgoo is kind, loyal, and good. He can pretend that he only wants a meat shield, but it's obvious that Park Deokgoo death was what triggered him to lose control.
Despite Seungmin’s distaste for humans, Minho is still eager to know more about him. He finds himself drawn to the werewolf’s elusive nature, and fuelled by his own hubris, believes he might stand a chance in finding his way past the walls he puts up. What he doesn’t consider, however, is what it truly means to be an animal. Dogs will still bite.

“Do you want me to talk to him, then?”
Chan looks at him, eyebrows knitted together in surprise as he stares at the man behind the counter. He says it like it’s the most obvious, unsurprising statement in the world– he’s never really taken an interest in the whole werewolf thing. Why now?
“Min– Are you sure?”
Chan asks, peering over the counter, fiddling with the loose shift key on his laptop’s keyboard.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Minho turns to him languidly, placing the glass down somewhere under the counter where Chan can’t see. He watches intently as he unties the back of his apron, deft fingers working at the knot. He’d offer him some help– hell, he’d jump right over the bar if he asked him to. But, in true Minho fashion, he’s never one to bother asking. They’re the same in that regard, so Chan can’t be too upset over it– but the sudden interest stings, just a bit. Mostly because it’s not him he’s interested in.
Chan sighs, closing the lid of his laptop a little harder than intended. The sound makes him wince, and even earns an unreadable expression from Minho, looking back over his shoulder as he hangs his apron up on a hook.
Chan murmurs, packing his laptop into his bag with a bit too much faff– as if to drag out the moment, busy himself so he can spend just a second longer with Minho.
“I’ll drop by tomorrow, if I have time. Now get out, I have to close up shop– for real this time.”
Minho has a slight bite in his tone– playful, but still enough to make him feel a little askew. It’s probably his feelings, stirring up in his chest that’s making him feel this way. He’ll be fine in a couple days, he promises. It’s just a wolf thing, he’s sure.
The restaurant’s always a cozy place after hours. Chan began frequenting the place at exactly when it would close– just to bother the handsome bartender that’d work there in the evenings. The smell of dish soap and residual alcohol paired with idle chatter about everything and nothing at all was enough to keep him coming back– the empty restaurant, a place reserved for them, and them only. Chan offers one last look at Minho, the dim lighting of the bar perfectly accentuating his features. Chan doesn’t notice he’s staring until Minho makes a face at him– something between playful annoyance and exasperation.
“Alright, alright, I’m leaving!”
Chan says, with a laugh he forces from his throat. Minho rolls his eyes, turning his back to him as he busies himself with something behind the counter again. The clack of the restaurant doors punctuate Chan’s departure. Minho doesn’t see him leave.
—
The trek up to Chan’s place– Chan’s estate, he should say– is more than a little rough, to say the least. The path up is overgrown, just barely trodden down enough to weave through the dead undergrowth, and that’s not to mention the thick snow blanketing the woods it’s surrounded by. Minho parked his car a little ways down– the driveway is long enough, (and maybe a little scary if you’re visiting in the evening) but nothing his old four by four can’t handle. Minho himself, however.. Well, he’s doing good enough against the elements, he supposes.
It’s not a long walk, really. After a couple minutes, he can finally see the ridiculous expanse of the house from beyond the thicket. According to Chan, it was his grandparents’ home before they passed away. His parents had planned to sell it, until Chan had mentioned he’d take responsibility for the place if he moved in, the reason being that it was situated relatively close to his University. They’d agreed, and Chan was granted the keys, the house now repurposed from a comfortable family home to a literal den of wolves.
Minho kicks the snow from his boots at the door, scraping his heels against the doormat before he lets himself in. He’s just about to bend down and untie his laces when he’s startled by the loud clacking of claws against the hardwood floor– and before he can even process what’s happening, he’s bombarded by a flurry of white fur and incessant panting.
“Jeongin-ah– yes, okay, yeah– hello to you too.”
Jeongin barks at him, yipping like a dog and spinning in circles in pure, barely contained excitement. By far Jeongin is the least skilled in controlling his wolf form, turning into a big hulking mass of white fur at even the slightest provocation– and when Jeongin pushes his head into the palm of Minho’s hand, he’s promptly reminded of how much he is insistently not a dog person.
It takes a good few minutes and a couple of scratches behind the ear until Jeongin finally loses his interest, disappearing off to god knows where. Maybe he’ll go lie in the middle of the hallway, or somewhere else mildly inconvenient, he thinks as he rolls his eyes. Minho shucks off his shoes and his coat, hanging them neatly on the hook by the door, and then bee-lines to the kitchen before he can make his rounds of the house.
Here’s the thing about werewolves– they eat like crazy. And to nobody’s surprise, when Minho opens the cupboards and checks the fridge, they’re once again near empty. He makes a mental note of things he needs to buy, filing through each drawer to see what’s missing. Vegetables, fruits, meat, snacks, the instant ramen Chan likes to buy in bulk. Minho isn’t obligated to go grocery shopping for them– it’s not his job, and it’s not like he has to. But, with the convenient excuse of “you’ve got a big kitchen, and you never use it?” Minho makes sure all the wolves (and Changbin) are at least fed when he makes the time to visit.
Once he’s done nosing about their kitchen, Minho saunters out and toward the living room, almost tripping over a sleeping Jeongin in the doorframe. He carefully steps over the comically large animal, trying his best not to wake the slumbering beast, before making his way over to the couch.
When Minho gets close enough to peer over the back of the sofa, he finds Han sprawled out over the cushions, reading some manga he’s far too absorbed in, his awestruck expression telling. From what he can make out from the head of dirty blonde hair buried into the crook of Han’s neck, Hyunjin is the one laying atop him, chest rising and falling being enough evidence that he’s asleep.
It takes a moment before Han finally notices Minho, and he smiles.
“Ah- hyung! Are you making dinner?”
Han grins, but it’s shortly replaced with a look of concern as Hyunjin stirs, an irritable drawl escaping from the blonde.
“Maybe,” Minho responds, his voice just above a whisper. “I’ll have to get groceries first. But- I’m not here for that, anyways. Do you know if Seungmin’s in?”
Han blinks at him.
“Seungmin? Why? I mean, he’s home.” He says, making sure to quieten his tone. “He’s in his room.”
All Minho does is nod in return, his gaze wandering past Han and toward the fireplace situated opposite. He squints, meandering his way around the couch and the cushions spilling onto the floor before crouching down in front of the fire. He chucks in a couple bits of wood, poking the charcoal around with the fireplace poker. Han’s voice breaks through the white noise of the crackling fire.
“Wait, so- why Seungmin, again?”
Minho stands, staring at the fireplace.
“I said I’d talk to him.” His words are quick, nonchalant. “For Chan.”
Minho turns back to Han, who gives him a look. Something somewhat unreadable, but speaks of concern nonetheless.
“Right.. Be careful, then.” Is all Han musters, returning to the manga he was so interested in.
Minho takes this as his cue to leave, leaning over the couch to offer a flick to the back of Hyunjin’s head with his thumb and index finger, scurrying out of the room before Hyunjin can retaliate. A sly laugh escapes him as he hears Hyunjin’s whine of complaint, followed by Han’s laughter and playful bickering between them. The exchange stirs a warmth in Minho’s chest.
—
The stairs creak beneath Minho’s feet, his steps slipping into the ever so slightly dented hardwood, smoothened by time and continuous use. It’s difficult to make out in the dark, but he can see the claw marks torn through the staining as he walks his way up. At one point, they’d made him uneasy– a testament to what they were, still beasts as much as they were men. But the smaller scratches made it a bit more bearable, and oddly enough, more human. It served as proof that Chan and his siblings had lived here prior, kids who were just as unruly as puppies, crashing about this home just as the others do now. A smile tugs at his lips as he imagines a younger Chan, scurrying down the same hallway as Jeongin does now. More than fear, he feels familiarity.
Minho doesn’t bother turning the lights on in the hallway. For some reason, the wolves don’t seem to mind the dark, and so he doesn’t bother intruding on their habitual behaviour. The window from the end of the hallway pours in enough evening light for him to find his way to Seungmin’s bedroom door, and he knocks once, twice– only to be met with no response.
The thing about Seungmin, from what Minho has been told, is that he’s just a little bit more difficult than the other canines. Nobody’s really sure what he was like before Chan found him, only that Chan has known him longest, and that even Chan doesn’t really know much about him, either. He’s kind, though, Minho notes, dawdling behind Seungmin’s bedroom door. He has a witty sense of humour that contrasts well with his dry nature– he could get a chuckle out of anyone. And despite his elusive nature, his eyes are kind and puppy-like, carrying demeanour somewhat softer than that of a wolf. To put it simply, Minho isn’t scared of him. Why would he be?
“Kim Seungmin,” Minho calls, rapping his knuckles against the door again. “I’m going for a walk. Come with me.”
“I don’t want to.”
Their conversations are usually like this. A gentle demand, met quickly with defiance, tumbling into bickering akin to that of a married couple’s. But Seungmin’s a homebody, and Minho knows a walk would be good for him, so he knocks, again. He can hear Seungmin groan from behind the door.
“I need to take my dog for a walk. Come on, Seungmin-ah. Let’s go”
Minho is met with a palpable silence, but before he can lift his hand to knock again, the door abruptly swings open. Seungmin’s hair is dishevelled, tufts of fluffy brown sticking out from all angles– he seems to have just woken from a nap. In an attempt to fix his unkempt hair, he shakes his head like a dog.
“I’m not your dog.” Seungmin says, which Minho thinks is a bit ironic.
“I’ll be downstairs. Come on, before it gets dark.” Minho says, wandering back down the hallway and toward the stairway.
Seungmin huffs. “Fine. Give me a minute.”
—
Fiddling with the locks on the back door, Minho finally breaks them from where they’re frozen stiff, sliding the latch free with a resounding clack. It takes a bit of a push to actually get the door open, accounting for all the snow that had piled up in front of it. A big puff of air escapes into steam as he heaves, exuding the last of his effort against the door and kicking away the residual snow, just for his own convenience.
“SEUNGMIN-AH” Minho booms, knowing that the moody wolf is probably biding his time.
He’s met with silence for the most part, and he sniffs loudly as he feels the cold begin to bite at his nose. He wants to get moving– it would warm him up, if anything. Truth be told, he doesn’t really want to go for a hike in such frosty weather, casting a glance to the expanse of woodland waiting before him. Even so, the setting sun offers at least some sliver of warmth on his skin, and the orangey glow it casts on the woods makes the whole ordeal seem a bit more appealing.
He’s just about to close the door, turn tail and head back into the warmth of the house, until a blur of mousey brown fur dashes past him quicker than he can begin to comprehend it. He watches as the figure dashes up the slope– now realising it’s Seungmin– and disappearing off into the woods before Minho can even ask him to wait. He’s left dumbfounded, his brows pulled together in shock. So much for a walk.
Still, Minho obliges. He closes the door behind him and begrudgingly makes the trek up the slope, shuffling through thick snow towards the woodland awaiting him. There isn’t a pathway through the woods, but he’s walked through enough times to somewhat know his way around. In the winter, the ferns and foliage tall enough to tickle his neck become flattened by a blanket of white, devoid of life and colour in its entirety. It’s beautifully still, quiet save for the occasional birdsong. The crunch of dead twigs and frost beneath his feet seem almost deafening in the silence.
He recalls something Chan said before, about territory and instincts, the thought prompted by Seungmin’s paw prints he’d been absent-mindedly following through the snow. Although the woodland belongs to Chan under the lease of the land owned by his grandparents, the way werewolves operate around territory is completely different. Despite being humans, and despite understanding that the territory might be Chan’s legally, there are other werewolves that still fight for the same land, like actual animals. Chan had made a point to express how stupid he knew it sounded– why would they, as people, need to dispute like animals over the idea of territory of all things? He’d laughed awkwardly, as if admitting it was embarrassing.
It took Minho a while to wrap his head around it. Despite their humanity, they, too, are still animals. It was something Minho knew he could never understand– an inhuman instinct to act solely based on an inherent force of nature. That it is something you must do, regardless of what your mind may convince you otherwise. “That's why Hyunjin’s so.. Jittery.” Chan had explained one evening, “He’s got all these desires, and no outlet.”
That night, Chan had put the idea of being a werewolf truly into perspective for Minho. Instinct was something their body needed to act upon. To deny themselves of their nature was to deny themselves of what made them human, too, reducing all of their feelings into anxiety and pent up frustration– like the jittery, fearful mess Hyunjin was when they had first met, fuelled by his own cognitive dissonance.
Minho slows his pace, soon realising that Seungmin’s paw prints had led to a mass of shrubbery and dead foliage, disappearing beyond where he could follow. He chews his lip, furrowing his brows as he wanders ahead, finding himself in a clearing blanketed in white. The boughs of the trees part, the sky greeting him with a smattering of clouds, accompanied by an array of pink and orange hues. He sighs into the collar of his coat.
What Chan had said began to make sense, but it begged another question that Minho couldn’t bring himself to ask. What was Seungmin’s deal, then? The question that had spurred on the current situation in the first place, what kept his gaze following the brunette every time he stayed round, captivated by what he could not decipher.
Why did Seungmin lean so much into his instinct, over being human instead?
Minho stares at the ground, kicking up a lump of snow as he mulls it over in his brain. He’s not really sure what to think, but he’s broken from his trance when the sound of paws thrumming against snow calls to his attention, a blur of brown appearing in his peripheral vision. He lifts his head, and opens his mouth to speak–
“Seungm-”
Two bodies collide, one intercepting the other as they hurtle through the snow, tossing up white as they writhe against the ground, a cacophony of growls and snarls orchestrated between the two as they snap at one another’s throats. When the larger rears onto his hind legs, Minho can tell it’s Seungmin, his mottled brown fur dishevelled and matted red. As he brings down his paws, the force is so mighty that Minho can feel it reverberate through the ground, his breath suddenly catching in his throat. He doesn’t realise he’s hyperventilating until he stumbles backward, his back hitting the bark of the tree behind him and startling him from his shock.
The noise the other creature makes is terrifying, a whine so pained that it rings in his ears. He watches as the other wolf desperately tries to pull itself out from under Seungmin, gnashing its fangs in an effort to defend itself. Minho doesn’t know what scares him more– the flurry of teeth and claws and the blood spattering the snow, or the fact Seungmin is capable of holding his own and then some.
When the other wolf finally gets free, it limps away, paws skidding in the snow as it frantically makes its escape. The silence that follows only makes Minho aware of his heart clattering against his ribs. He swallows heavily, slumping down against the tree.
The wolf turns to him. The blood drips from his maw, smeared across his muzzle. Minho holds his breath.
Seungmin stalks up to him, body language cautious, as if he, too, is scared. The wolf lowers himself ever so slightly, head tilted to the side. Hesitantly, Minho reaches out a hand, finding his way to Seungmin’s jaw. The blood is wet and warm against his palm, and it makes him feel slightly sick, his stomach churning in disgust. However, when Seungmin gently presses the side of his head into Minho’s hand, he begins to feel a little less frightened. He heaves out a breath.
This was their reality. It dawns on him, shaky as he withdraws his hand. Whether Minho liked it or not, whether he wanted to believe it or not– Seungmin was still an animal. Dogs still bite.
The blood is sticky between his fingers. His gaze flits to Seungmin’s, deep brown eyes meeting his own, and it’s only then the wolf moves the help Minho to his feet, nudging him up and out of the snow with his nose.
The walk back to Chan’s home is quiet, Seungmin pressed close to Minho’s side as he guides him down through the woods. He glances up at him every now and then, but Minho doesn’t respond, his hand gently clutching at his fur instead. It offers some sort of solace between them.
Before Minho enters the house, he turns to Seungmin, drawing in a deep breath.
“For the record,” He begins, hand loitering on the door handle as if to prepare himself. “I’m not scared of you, Seungmin.”
They exchange a look. Seungmin can’t respond, but the look in his eyes is enough to know his words were understood.
—
Commotion stirs up almost instantaneously as the two enter the house. Seungmin had already dashed up the stairs, but the trail of blood he leaves in his wake doesn’t go unnoticed. Jeongin —now human— was the first to catch the scent, just barely missing his bloodied housemate as he approached Minho, clearly panicking. It wasn’t long until his flustered voice had caught the attention of Han and Hyunjin from the living room, and all of a sudden it seemed the whole house had begun demanding what happened.
The biggest surprise however, was Chan, who came hurtling down the stairs at the news. Chan was usually so composed– things like this didn’t seem to phase him. They had gotten into scuffles with other wolves before, which Chan had usually confronted with utmost responsibility, solving the problems he’d been presented with without any more strife than necessary. However, in spite of what Minho had assumed, Chan had fixed him with a look he’d never been faced with before. His eyebrows were upturned with an intense worry, the ears atop his head pulled back with obvious unease. He’d practically trembled as he took Minho’s bloodied hands into his own.
It took a bit of reasoning to finally get it through to Chan that he was okay. He’d come out unscathed, fortunately, unlike the conclusion Chan had jumped to in his fretful state. Minho promises Chan he’s fine, even if he’s not entirely sure it’s true. His response is returned by a frown and a nod. Chan knows Minho isn't the kind of person who likes to be pressed for information, but the fur that stands on end at the back of his ears tells Minho that he’s still not convinced. He takes a mental note to reassure him later.
Minho takes a step back from the group, lifting his hands defensively.
“I’d rather just go wash this off– I promise I’m fine, alright?”
His words are taken reluctantly but still taken, and Minho uses that as his opportunity to slip away. He can still hear the others quietly discuss as he slinks through the hallway, but his mind is too exhausted to care about speculation right now. His biggest concern is washing the mess off his hands, and – Seungmin.
Minho is surprised to see him when he enters the kitchen, mostly because of the giant gash stretching from his shoulder to his upper back, dripping red down the divot of his spine. He’s not sure why he didn’t think wounds would stay consistent throughout their human and animal forms, but Minho hadn’t even noticed Seungmin had gotten hurt in the first place, the wound obscured by thick layers of fur at the time. His stomach knots up with guilt, and he chews at the inside of his cheek.
The ears atop Seungmin’s head swivel toward Minho’s place in the doorway before Seungmin himself looks over, his body turned halfway towards him. He’s holding disinfectant and a cloth in his hands, the first aid kit laying unpacked in front of him on the counter. He doesn’t say anything, and the two hold awkward eye contact for a good couple of seconds. Minho blinks, as if it’ll break the silence.
“What?”
Minho doesn’t respond to Seungmin’s blunt inquiry, instead making his way to the sink to wash the blood from his hands. He can hear Seungmin sigh behind him, and Minho takes a peek over his shoulder, watching the younger gently pat the disinfectant soaked cloth against his outer clavicle where the wound begins. Seungmin hisses through his teeth, pained by the sting of the alcohol– but all Minho can think about is how Seungmin is going to deal with the rest of the gash on his back.
With a roll of his eyes, Minho dries his hands, before standing directly behind Seungmin and slinking his hands around his front, gently taking the cloth and disinfectant from his hands. Seungmin opens his mouth to protest, but as he goes to take the cloth back, he winces in pain from the sudden movement. Minho raises an eyebrow at him.
“Here, I'll do it. You won’t be able to reach, anyways.” He murmurs, wetting the cloth with more disinfectant.
Seungmin huffs, but doesn’t argue, instead turning his back to Minho. They fall into silence once again, Minho gently working at his wounds with utmost care. He’s not usually this gentle with him– with anyone, really, as long as you’re not counting his cats. Even so, when Seungmin groans through gritted teeth, shoulders stiffening at the pain, Minho pulls away until the ache subsides enough for him to continue.
“Seungmin-ah,” Minho begins, cutting through the heavy silence settled between them. “I’m sorry. For not being more careful.”
Seungmin doesn’t respond immediately, only gently tipping his head down. Although he’s quiet, Minho notices his knuckles flex from where his hand grips the counter. Minho continues.
“I meant what I said, at the door.” He murmurs, voice lowered as if it’s something only Seungmin should hear. “My opinion of you hasn’t changed.”
Seungmin sharply draws in a breath.
“Does it matter?”
Minho’s surprised at the answer. A beat.
“Whether or not it does, I thought I should tell you.”
Minho is used to being reassuring. Han is someone who needs it, Hyunjin is someone who thrives off of it– Chan desires it, even if it is unspoken. But the unfortunate truth of the matter is that Seungmin is harder to read, more than anyone Minho happens to be close to. He might know him vaguely, in little snippets he’s able to concoct into a person in his mind– He’s got a witty sense of humour and a dry nature, and his eyes still remain kind despite everything. But the person beyond that is always out of reach, standing across the threshold of what Minho is granted the privilege to know.
Minho lets out a sigh. Gently, he rests his forehead against the back of Seungmin’s unwounded shoulder. Seungmin seems startled at the contact, but doesn’t move.
“It might not matter to you,” He whispers. “But it matters to me that you know.”
“Even if I’m still violent? Even if I hurt you?” Seungmin retaliates.
He pulls away, moving to turn to Minho– fully this time. There’s a sort of malice veiling his gaze, as if to challenge Minho’s words. The side of his mouth is smeared with blood.
Minho moves to wipe it away with his thumb, delicately cradling Seungmin’s cheek.
“Even if you hurt me” He promises.
Seungmin’s gaze holds Minho’s, the crease in his brow slightly softening. Minho watches as Seungmin’s adam's apple bobs, averting his eyes as if he’s suddenly conscious of Minho’s stare, ears lowering in a gentle act of submission. Minho swears he can feel Seungmin lean his cheek into his hand, until–
“YAH! WHY IS THERE BLOOD IN THE HALLWAY?”
The sudden yell breaks the two away from each other instantly, Seungmin jolting away and stumbling back into the counter. He hisses in pain as his lower back collides with the marble, and Minho pinches his nose bridge with annoyance, the two turning their attention to the voice now appearing in the doorway.
“Hyung, I didn’t know you were- SEUNGMIN-AH?”
Changbin’s hands are full, one with his rucksack and his laptop and the other with a bag full of groceries, which he practically throws onto the kitchen island when he catches sight of the state Seungmin is in. He frets, pushing past a Minho who’s slowly backing away from the two of them. Changbin begins to ask a million questions a minute, and it’s clear Seungmin is struggling to keep up, every sentence ending with an “I’m fine,” and “It’s not a big deal.” Changbin whines, turning to Minho as if he’ll back him up.
“It’s getting late,” Minho says with an awkward laugh. “I think I should get going. I’ll come by tomorrow or something?”
“But, wait- what happened to-”
Changbin tries to get his sentence out, but Minho is already slowly shuffling backwards out of the kitchen door. Seungmin fixes him with a look, but this time it’s something understanding. Minho discreetly nods back, and Changbin nearly misses the exchange.
“Hey- what’s going on between you two-” He says, frantically glancing between them. “wait, MINHO-YAH, COME BACK-”
Minho’s already out the door before Changbin can catch him.
—
His apartment is cold when he finally makes it home. He slips off his boots at the door, pleasantly greeted with a happy (and hungry) Soonie. The tabby meows at Minho demandingly, and so Minho crouches down, letting the orange tabby sniff at his hands. He's somewhat displeased by the dog smell– but nonetheless rubs his cheek against Minho's fingers. Minho smiles, gently scooping the cat up into his arms, to which the other two finally make themselves known, Doongie and Dori appearing at his feet as he makes his way further into his apartment.
Once the cats are fed and he finally turns the heating on, Minho returns to his bedroom. He’s about to grab a fresh pair of pyjamas and take a shower when he hears his phone buzz in his pocket, startling him. He pats around at the jeans he’s wearing, forgetting which pocket he’d put his phone in, only to find it in the pouch of his hoodie. When the screen lights up, he’s surprised to see a text from Seungmin.
Thanks for your help earlier. I appreciate it. Is all it says, followed by a dog emoji. Minho finds himself smiling at his phone, amused by Seungmin’s stiff text. It almost makes him laugh. Almost.
No problem. He responds, with a cat emoji at the end.
He throws his phone down on his bed, running his hands through his hair. His cheeks go hot, embarrassed at how giddy this makes him.
Goodnight, Hyung. Seungmin’s text lights up on Minho’s screen.
Minho’s heart thrums in his chest. He swears he’s going insane.
THREE major revelations take place in this episode and there will soon be a backstory that some readers are looking forward to reading.
So Jake (Gimyung) met Daniel (Hyungseok) outside of the Grimm clinic when he did his own reconnaisance. Then they both agreed on capturing CEO Charles Choi (Choi Dongsoo) and Park Jinyoung. Jake was bent on getting back at Charles for what happened to Big Deal and Daniel of course wanted to get his second body back (and uncover that mystery). They separated and agreed to meet on D-Day (the asylum attack).
I really love this interaction. Danny calls Jake "hyung" (older bro) and I wish that someday they could remain good friends. They were also joking a little bit about how useful Jake might be (or not...hahaha their short banter was everything).
Anyway they arrived at Jihan's holding cell and set him free (it was so easy, the plot must be moving at the speed of lightning again). Zack (Jinsung) came rescuing Jibeom and Hudson (Hyunsung) who, fyi, fainted after the monster's attack before Eli (Hyun) dragged it (him?) down with him two episodes ago. It was so funny, he was pissed that he was left alone helping them (I hope Vasco's fine somewhere... COME ON SOMEBODY FIND HIM).
And lo and behold, the ominiscient "Forever Man" is none other than Jihan's insane cell mate. The man is not called "Forever" for nothing. He was the first victim of Workers (lhae)'s forced confinement.
This is the first revelation.
The man's also Baek Hangyeol's father.
So somehow Hangyeol cheated the system as a minor to cosign with his mom in order to imprison his dad for reasons of insanity (I wonder if there'll be more to this backstory, like Jasmine [Youngmi]'s dad way back then who was actually a sexual molester to her).
Back to the present time, The Forever Man led Allied to a set of emergency stairs that they couldn't find before (because it's walled from the outside). And per Hangyeol's instruction, Taejin was already waiting for them at the first basement, all prepared. (CHEONLIANG BACKSTORY SOON!)
The mere sight of Taejin smirking drove Vin (Hobin) to anger and tears and soon they began to fight as Vin was determined that no witnesses should be left alive, implying that Taejin was an eyewitness to the murder that Vin had to commit in the past, or to whatever happened to Mary (Miru).
That is the second revelation in the episode, btw.
Hangyeol also told Park Jinyoung to prepare. And by preparing he meant to use his three reprogrammed victims (Big Danny, Johan and Samuel [Seongeun]) to launch an attack against Allied.
Yep his experiments were apparently to turn them into some sort of soldier/bioweapons thingy and see which one of them was the strongest (predictable, I wish it was related to the double bodies). Thanking the mad scientist for not shaving Johan and Samuel bald.
This is the third and final revelation in this episode.
Yeah, ok! I mean I'm on a language kick so if you meant like a specific theme you wanted to ask about her fitting into then like lmk but I'll just do another name meaning breakdown here.
李 智 慧
^plum ^knowledge ^wisdom
이 지 혜
^ common surname ^ these two together often mean kind of like a wisdom/knowledge of overcoming ignorance/evil/chaos. has some reference in Buddhist texts.
TLDR;
the surnames in ORV group the characters together in interesting ways and some themes connecting the Lees are connection to KDJ's (and to KDJ thru extension of YJH's) past/childhood, and experience of growing in adversity (symbolized by plum meaning of Lee).
We know LJH is a Jeonju Lee because she's a descendant of Yi Seokgi in text. The stories of Admiral Yi Sunsin with Yi Seokgi and Lee Jihye with Na Bori parallel in a way that emphasizes how the moral actions that define who becomes the hero of a story are context sensitive to a society.
Historical narratives/war movies typically portray a black and white of who was right and who was wrong that is supposed to seem obvious in hindsight, but are propped up too often as moral lessons that are always true, but will actually be different relevant to the standards of the current 'setting' (society).
Jihye's Hanja can refer to an understanding of some Buddhist concepts that represent an answer to ORV's question of 'how to survive in a ruined world' that Kim Dokja ultimately disagrees with.
Detailed explanation:
Surname Lee
Yi/Lee/Li is another one of those suuuuper common last names. 2nd most common in Korea and it trades places with 王 a lot in China's population count for #1 and #2 most common. (BTW Li is such a common translation of this last name despite modern Korean spelling of 이 partially because in. Middle Korean it has been spelled multiple ways [링,니,리] throughout history, partially because the word is so old and has to be written so often, it's survived multiple standardizations of the Korean language that English is still catching up to.) You can see the commonness of the name reflected in how so many ORV characters have this last name, (Lee Sookyung, Lee Hyunsung, Lee Seolhwa, Lee Gilyeong Lee Jihye...)
But if the usage was just reflecting 'commonness' then where are the 5 characters with surname 밝 omniscient reader where have the parks of the world gone omniscient reader did they all die in the subway car omniscient reader answer me.
... ok, I would argue that regardless of intentionality, the surnames in ORV associate some characters in ORV with the roles they each have and call attention to the similarities between them. Like, Han Sooyoung and Han Myungoh both play parts of like cartoonishly obvious villains in the early text (韓 has some national pride attached to it because it's one of few Hanja commonly used in modern Korean bc it literally just means Korea today, but the etymological root is that it's a picture of a fence so you could infer like Chinese calling a nation past dynasty borders the nation over the fence which implies a separation/opposition I suppose), Yoo Sangah and Yoo Joonghyuk have sort of an emphasized relationship to Kim Dokja I discussed a bit earlier, and Kim Dokja hates Kim Namwoon because he was projecting his self-hatred of a cringe younger version of himself onto him.
So the thing that stands out to me about LHS LSH and LJH is that they're all people who are related to Yoo Joonghyuk's "past". (Sn: I feel SYS is exempted from this grouping because of her unique position in relation to time/humanness/KDJ&YJH, her surname 申 is from Chinese astrology (stars and specific symbolism you could call daoism)/timekeeping a summer month around gregorian August, but is also used in Korean phrases associated with honesty/earnestness, w/ promises and requests) . Conversely, LSK and LGY are a few of the 'real' people of KDJ's world pulled into the scenarios by his influence and also kind of remind of his past/childhood. So I think this actually has to do with the meanings/associations of this surname's hanja
李 is easy to remember with the meaning of plum because it's a picture of a child 子 hanging down from a tree 木. Plums don't actually have as long of a history as you might think because relative to Chinese language in like 1250 BCE we only have evidence of domestic plums starting around 400 BCE. HOWEVER despite a lack of genetic evidence, Western Zhou inscriptions on bronze (which are called 金文 btw if you wanted to know that KDJ's name is like maybe even more related to lit history lol) have been found to contain this glyph:
Wherein, rather than tree, the little asterisk looking thing is actually the lingual precursor to 米 which as a noun means like a grain/grass/wheat type of situation. How does that make sense if the plum is from a tree and not a grass? Well, linguists speculate the character is pictophonetic and the precursor to 米 is just giving the sound of the character, but it could also be an implication of cultivation/domestication/having the nature of a crop in my opinion, which would be cool if true because inscriptions of this kind occur previous to 771 BC, which is 300 years before extant physical evidence implies plums were domesticated/cultivated.
(Sn: Sorry ok all this is very cool to me because I love how far back you can trace things in Chinese Language. Like if you think about where language begins, I'm reminded very much of the nature of humanity and how ORV puts it with the metaphor of the wall. The first evidence we have of Chinese writing is the oracle bones that Shang people used, and these scriptures showed an already fully formed language that may have been used on more degradable materials. But the oracle bones lend this sacredness to the idea of the written word. The Shang carved characters into ox bones and turtle shells to ask their ancestors questions, and the ability to communicate with ancestors to predict the weather, the relationship of an individual to the past, stood at the very foundation of many East Asian societies for centuries after this point. Yet you wonder, who was the first prophet of bones? Was the first pictograph we might call language an attempt to communicate to a deceased loved one? To ask a question? To write on a wall, not knowing if there was truly a reader on the other side? It's something I think of with this theme of impossible communication that ORV is making a statement with about all of literary history.)
Either way, the inclusion of the word child is significant, because it's not just tied to the fruit being 'born' from the tree, but possibly also the symbolic significance of the plum throughout literary history. This is because plum is very associated with the season of spring. Like literally if you've ever played mahjong or looked at old daoist texts I guess there's this whole thing where there are 4 flowers tied to the 4 seasons and the plum blossom is the blossom of spring. And you know when you literally have like old old old guiding religious texts that basically Explain what those seasons mean to people at the time that becomes the foundation of medicine/ruling philosophies you can see like there are some very consistent themes tied to the plum blossom and thus the character 李.
First is the idea of birth, which makes sense because spring is when the whole world is coming back to life after winter, and the flowers of the plum tree are one of the same. (Sn: a lot of daoist/naturalist influence in literary symbolism is based in the idea of scale... Like the galaxy is a microcosm of the universe, the planet is a microcosm of a galaxy, a human life is a microcosm of the planet, etc.) Because of this, the plum and spring sre associated with childhood/ the early stages of life, (as 子 implies). In this sense, it fits well that 李 would be used for important characters in raising KDJ (his mom and the people he admired in YJH's story) while also being used for LJH and LGY, whose youth in comparison to their harsh situation is often commented upon by the narrative. The other aspect of this meaning is the idea of blooming in spite of adversity, in that the first blooms of the plum blossom may appear when it still feels like winter, bringing the first signs of spring, thus the growing in spite of adversity. Thus, it makes a lot of sense to name a lot of the characters in a literal Apocalypse novel 李, they are blooming/growing in spite of their harsh circumstances.
(Sn: the history of plums/ stonefruit in East Asia is really interesting, sent me down a rabbit hole of trying to figure out what the first domesticated stonefruit was, but it's far back in time enough that 1 day isn't enough time to find that answer.)
In LJH's case in particular, 李 is also an important connection to the historical figure Yi Eokgi. This actually means she's one of few characters featured in ORV we have a Bon-gwan for, since Yu Eokgi was descendant from the Jeonju Yi clan (who made Korea's royal seal the plum blossom when they were in power btw). This is pretty interesting and ORV does like super get into it in the movie theater chapters, but I'll put some context here if you like do not know about Korean war history.
So war is a really interesting narrative in ORV because of a certain discourse on the sort of tokenization of tragedy in storytelling/propaganda. For instance, a huge theme of early Korean literature is the victory of Silla in the three kingdoms period, because extant Korean literature begins with the ancestors of the Silla nobles who conquered the peninsula. Thus, in tales of the three kingdoms, Silla may be portrayed in a better light/more accurately than Goguryeo and Baekje. Up to the modern day, these tales get retold over and over again with different actors, which is part of the point the arc about the war of kings was making, that these noble, dressed up pictures of war don't stand up to actual conflict or modern day issues, that they get rehashed over and over again as if to invoke some sense of national pride when in reality they've lost meaning/application to modern wars/society beyond the profit made by selling their recognizable images. (Shout out to Min Jiwon, her surname's hanja means 'pity' btw, lol) In contrast to this history, Admiral Yi Sunsin is someone who recorded his own history in logs without the intent of publication (as far as I'm aware), and his image/story was taken by the literate of his time only to be fed into that same content generating machine of the modern day, where war movies commercialize and glamorize the battles he fought. (Sn: ORV calls him by his posthumous title, wherein the Hanja for 'loyalty" was used despite the fact that Yi Sunsin notoriously disobeyed the emperors orders and was right to do it. This name kind of relates to this concept of the written word as a masking narrative bc he also had a given name that basically meant servant of the emperor and there's a famous letter where he was like this servant is going to do the opposite of what you said actually to the king) In the context of ORV and modern SK society, the military is just another industry the young people of today are filed in and out of, and men in particular are obligated and often made to feel there is a real need to participate in the industrial complex of modern warfare. So, this is relevant to KDJ's life experience of mentioning being sent to a bad post during his time serving, in the sense of showing war to actually be quite soul draining and unremarkable outside of fantasy.
So in the idea of considering Yi Sunsin 's Real Life story as something tokenized into "Narrative," Yi Seokgi is like almost less than a sidekick. He was a commander in Yi Sunsin 's first notable battle with Japanese forces, so the two often fought alongside one another, yet he's not the individual that is most often put with Yi Sunsin or remarked upon as his close 'comrade' in history, so it makes sense in the realm of ORV that maybe his story isn't well known. I personally think this is sort of because his story is tragic in the sense that the moral of it is to not follow orders of stupid government leaders who don't understand reality... In that he died because he went to a battle when the king ordered it after Yi Sunsin was arrested and stripped from his post for disobeying because he knew it was a stupid order. In addition, I've seen some conflicting versions of this, but some say he went to his own death over the side of the ship when Korea's loss seemed apparent.
So this is really interesting then in the concept of LJH and Na Bori (surname means Net btw). Because it puts LJH as this Yi Seokgi whose obedience to Narrative turned her into a Yi Sunsin. Like, in the epilogues we can see her interactions with Na Bori in that LJH is the younger one who gets teased and called crybaby, who relies on NBR. (What if I was casting myself overboard because of our impending doom and you were a net that caught me and we were both girls lol) Then, NBR takes care of her further by sacrificing her own life. Then, this is the incident that draws the character of Yi Sunsin 's (also I say his name here, but consider that the monikers of the constellations are actually pretty important in the meta narrative context of a Character, a being that symbolizes something in a story, an idea, rather than the actual real person with their own private emotions and such. Also how they aren't able to communicate directly until the point where KDJ himself is becoming like a character to us too. The constellations picking someone then who best understands their story/relates to it is a form of viewership/readership in a way) attention to this particular ancestor of Yi Seokgi, in a way that kind of shows a version of his own story, what if the young and inexperienced Yi Seokgi was the one to live instead? Would he become the same kind of hero in different circumstances? This concept of seeking your own narrative in the stories of others recurrs, obviously, all throughout the narrative of ORV.
(sn on that: I think that KDJ finding his own narrative in different ways between LJH and KNW is also important to the main narrative of survivorship that drives KDJ's initial interest in the world of WoS because of the fact that LJH's survivors guilt and indecision are, in contrast to KNW's over-enthusiastic ownership of the identity of "murderer" relate to the internal debate of KDJ's own self hatred, in that self-exoneration through blaming the situation is the side of KDJ's trauma that triggers his self-hatred/that he has to let himself misremember to keep on living. In opposition, LJH is a "murderer" who KDJ feels sympathy towards. In the world of WoS promised to KDJ in that very initial concept of "what if everyone you know had to kill others in order to survive?" The introduction of these early characters in ORV is always tied to that idea of how they had to become a killer in order to survive. In the beginning, compared to KNW, LJH is someone KDJ wants to see be dissimilar from that version of himself)
So the battle highlighted in the movie theater chapters is the battle of Myeongyang, which is pretty important. In history, basically what happened is that the court and king became convinced by a Japanese double agent that they could ambush a Japanese fleet in a certain area of the sea that Yi Sunsin had actually been to and knew there were like just some absolutely shitty awful rocks there and so, despite not knowing about the double agent plot, he refused to take his ships out there for no reason. This double agent plot was like literally set up because Yi Sunsin had defeated the Japanese fleets a few times and they wanted to lure him right to those shitty rocks and kill him. Turns out they didn't have to because the idiot king got so pissed at being disobeyed that he had Yi Sunsin locked up and like broke his legs and wanted to kill him also but got convinced not to. Yi Eokgi and others who had fought alongside tried to stick up for him, but Yi Eokgi was sent out with another commander to sail right into the trap. Then like I said, some tellings say he died by 'honorable suicide' at sea and some say he was run ashore and killed, I'm not sure. Either way, I'm pretty sure ORV is working with the former version. In that case, Myeongyang is the battle wherein Yi Sunsin had just been reinstated and rushed out to look for the fleet that never returned.
So this is why the movie about this battle reminding LJH of her dead friend connects, because, presumably, the sea attributed to her sickness is the location of Yi Eokgi 's suicide, parallel to NBR voluntarily giving her life to save LJH's.
Another narrative occuring here is, again, the parallel of the fantasy situation to the reality of this kind of trauma. Just like KDJ and other's skills only come into play in the world of WoS, the environment -specific nature of LJH's abilities is particularly emphasized with association to this sea that is a reminder of her greatest personal trauma. This is interesting because I think the overt message of this scene is KDJ forcing this idea of like using your trauma as a necessity to become stronger, which is very interesting in the context of helplessness to narrative and the fact that KDJ's idea of being like the sacrificial goat that has to endure all suffering for the sake of any happiness to occur in the world being the final boss of ORV... Also interesting in the context of the way natural human tragedy/history is edited into narrative visavis the commentary of historical narrative here.
Because if you look at YSS, he was this admiral whose greatest advantage was always just knowing the sea the best of anyone else. He knew where the shitty rocks were, and Myeongyang was named the battle of Myeongyang because when the king was like give up on finding our guys and just fight with the land troops he was like nah man I got 12 ships here and ships are only good if there's water, and he sent one of his boats to lure the Japanese fleet of like 300 guys into the Myeongyang straight that just had like hella whirlpools.
So the idea of someone who is weak on land but strong in the sea is very parallel to that aspect of trauma which is the fact that trauma responses are trying to prepare you to encounter traumatic situations again, and when you don't encounter those situations, they just linger and stay with you, and in some ways they become a weakness in dealing with everything other than that very specific situation you once experienced. So in this section KDJ is telling LJY to get over her trauma and use it for this specific situation, that having endured killing a human being once before, you are prepared to do it however many times it takes to keep living and get to the end... But again, the entire text of ORV is challenging this idea of "necessary" traumas, and YSS is someone whose story reflects this in an interesting way.
Because YSS and YSG's 'tragedy' as told by ORV was probably quite preventable in real life. It was not really 'necessary' for so many people to be killed in the previous battle for YSS to win the battle at Myeongyang, but the bearing these aspects have on the power of his narrative? Would this story be told so many times over if YSS hadn't faced such adversity before the most told legend of the 12 ships under his command retaking the sea from 300 Japanese ships? YSS's eventual death at sea is retold over and over, while YSG who also died at sea during battle could have died any one of a few different ways without public consensus. It reminds me of that theme of little tragedies in ORV, the idea of a personal tragedy that will never reach the scale of a great story or narrative. Because narrative in some ways asks a tragedy to justify it's existence, to have a reason to be told so many times over, to fit to a certain model of what others want or expect. Like in real life we should be looking at the idiot king from YSS's time and thinking hey maybe you should just listen to people who know what they're talking about instead of having an ego about it, what an asshole, it's stupid that the government system gave him the power to do that shit, etc. But in the context of narrative, an idiot king is basically a setting, the innate nature of an uncaring and cruel world context is static and immovable, and the hero's interaction/relationship with that setting creates plot. "This is just the way things are, it's so realistic" type comments evoke this aspect of fiction that seeking radical joy in narrative fights against. Because in this narrative of war, young people are asked whether or not they will die following orders or live disobeying them, but the answer in LJH and NBR is that whether or not obeying the order to kill or resisting the order to kill will lead to certain death is completely dependent on the will of that setting the which narrative does not dare challenge.
So the aspect of war narrative adds onto this idea of systems/narratives/what we see as 'reality' having to be torn away to find the true heart of something. Because the reality of war reveals is that all death is senseless, tragedy is an impediment to happiness, not a requirement or precursor. Our sense of narrative merely gives the two a false relationship.
You can be happy without suffering, you can suffer without being happy, and you can be happy after suffering and suffering after being happy... Human life isn't always so simple as a one-way transition between winter and spring
Given name Jihye
智慧
Basically this word means wisdom, so you could interpret the whole name as like growing into wisdom or having to do with how YSS's quotations are repurposed as aphorisms or something, but like I said these characters are actually also used to translate the concept of 'prajna' in sinicized Buddhist texts. It also means wisdom/understanding/insight but there are like specific concepts that are supposed to be being Understood in the context of Buddhism u know. Basically: 1 nothing lasts forever (impermanence), 2 what causes suffering (I think usually Buddhists say the answer to that question is desire, idk), 3 the lack of self which Chinese translate 无我 (there's a huge split on what that means depending on the tradition) and sometimes also a secret 4th thing that's basically like nothing has inherent/meaning/form besides the illusions we construct of them (void).
The reason I find this Buddhism connection interesting is because I think that Buddhist philosophy (just in my experience of others trying to convert me/telling me why they prefer it not saying this is the case for everyone who prescribes to any branch) does this thing religions do where it tries to answer an impossible to solve problem that humans have but I don't necessarily agree with the solution. Like lots of religions are kind of based just in this reality that people dunno what being dead feels like when they are alive and are trying to predict it through the lense of their own societies, but Buddhism is kind of unique in that most of the branches with extended afterlife mythos develop like way later on and it doesn't immediately try to describe the creation of the world or assert any similar myth whose details are actually extremely related to the context of the society it was originally told in and hard to relate to outside of that worldview, Buddhism starts from the point of a guy who tried being rich and tried being poor and was like, I suffered doing both of those things. They both kind of sucked. Which I think is part of why Buddhism has such this huge spread across societies so early on in history because the silk road goes both ways but Buddhism caught on like a wildfire in East Asia and maybe part of that is that when your dynastic lineages and model of society goes back so fucking long it doesn't actually seem feasible to change your society as much as it seems to be able to remove yourself from the stresses existing in that society causes you.
So, 无常, 苦, 无我,空。 Society feels permanent, but there is no permanence. Bitterness exists because of this illusion of society. The concept of 'me' a symbol that represents my being to others is not actually a truly solid, unchangeable thing. To be void of the desires, concerns and stresses in the world you cannot change is 空 in the sense of void/lack of activity, but also in the sense of freedom. (Sn: I think I like the Chinese translations of the last term more than the English "void," because most English speakers will picture a dark space and feel trapped, but Kong makes me think 'do you have some free time?' which I think lines up more with the Buddhist idea of 'freeing yourself' than like the idea of you are confined to your mortal existence or w/e)
So in relation to the concept of narrative, this idea of 'wisdom' demonstrates that reaction of interaction with a horrible setting/worldly suffering/trauma/ etc. I think that because the lack of interaction/removal of self from the world is characterized as a philosophical enemy of ORV wherein 'caring about others and being happy with others does not always require suffering and even if it does keep trying to be Happy' and emphasizes the idea of the importance of individuality and identity and personhood, the name of 'understanding' in this sense is representing that LJH initially has a worldview KDJ has to fight against. Because her lack of participation in the scenario to avoid causing more suffering is like the first conflict between her and KDJ and he convinces her to fight to survive/keep on living/ interact with her suffering in a way that kinda contradicts from the idea of 'escaping the self' you know. Because at the core of ORV is that question of how do you go on living when you've done something horrible? In this sense, LJH's 智慧 is just another one of the stock responses to trauma Kim Dokja must react to in a sequence.
(Sn: once more on the concept of how narrative can justify something horrible, LSK's narrative redeeming herself in the eyes of the public vs the horrible truth she was trying to conceal. The idea that killing is acceptable in the scenarios but KDJ must conceal a past of murder outside of that space. The side characters shown to delight in horrible acts as soon as the setting/worldview has changed to expect it in them and reward them for it.)
I also think that ultimately Jihye represents the first introduction to the "reincarnator" solution to the ruined world that is later followed up by Nirvana and YSA, and KDJ's journey through that is kinda like a journey to the east instead of west where separating from narrative and your most important relationships and sense of self are the final boss.
↬summary: Seonghwa felt his shoulder sag, he felt touched and shy that someone noticed him struggling and decided to give him words of encouragement. His ears burned at the thought, he messed with his bangs to hide his face and bit his lips to fight a smile. This was unexpectedly sweet.
The rest of the evening, Seonghwa munched on m&m's as he continued to work on his notes, mind way more relaxed than it had been previously.
Or: Seonghwa starts receiving notes from an anonymous stranger that end up making his days brighter.

hi ya’ll ! i’m bloom , and i’m super excited to be here ! i’m twenty five , reside in the eastern tz , and as for my pronouns i use both she / her and they / them , so please feel free to use either or both interchangeably . yeonghwa is a muse that i have on my indie but i think putting him into a group setting would be fun ( because he’s honestly a mess in a half ) . i’m starting this intro at literally midnight fifty so i might not get to khai’s until tomorrow , but i’m looking forward to plotting with everyone !
kim mingyu . he / him . cis man . spotted at the met steps , yeonghwa park , most likely listening to somebody by keshi with their airpods pro . the twenty seven year old gained quite a reputation , known to be -bellicose yet +alluring to anyone who knows them . you’ll easily spot them when you hear about a blacked out motorcade coming to pick you up from private airport tarmac , never staying long enough for you to learn his name , a perfectly whitened cheshire grin taking over your features as you get what you want , and late nights and early mornings in the city searching for something to keep you going followed by bitter peach by tom ford . latest nepoupdates article talks about finally moving on ? yeonghwa park uses alleged love affair to mourn the end of his relationship , but i guess any repiuation is good reputation .
the story of the park family dates back generations , but there’s not enough time to talk about everyone . the park family is the kind of family that most would assume don’t exist outside of the fantasy of film and television , but they’re very real . led by his grandfather , chan - woo is the founder of hyunsung , one of the largest conglomerates in south korea . under hyunsung comes a number of subsidiaries in the industries of food , automotives , real estate , construction , and more . chan - woo and his wife , bo - eum , had four children together . by luck , one of those children was yeonghwa’s father .
yo - han was the third child of four , with one sister and two brothers making up the rest of the park children . with a father like chan - woo , each of the children were expected to be nothing but the best . they had to attend the best school , bring home the highest grade— they had to be on top , always . yo - han learned from a young age that he had to appease their father in the best way he knew how , so while his siblings constantly butted heads with their father , yo - han kept his head down . he eventually went on to join the law department at the prestigious seoul national university , which is also where he met his future wife , min - ju .
it’s a brand new world to be married into the park family , but min - ju is able to hold her own . after a multi - million dollar wedding and luxurious honeymoon , the couple begin to work for hyunsung . yo - han’s father tasked him with leading the real estate development sector of the company , and he did well . during that time , the couple began to have children of their own : their first son kwang - ho , a daughter named sol - ji , their second son named jin - gyu , their second daughter named yu - ri , and their last son yeong - hwa . much like his father , yo - han expected for his children to well and to be the best .
for yeonghwa , he always managed to butt heads with his father . being the youngest , most expected for him to be spoiled treated differently than his siblings , but that was never the case . yeonghwa was always the son who had something snarky to say , who rolled his eyes when his father came up with some new rule , but surprisingly he had a close relationship with his grandfather . yeonghwa’s family moved to new york with the extension of the real estate division when he was nine , and went on to attend the best schools in new york .
yeonghwa went on to attend columbia university , where he double majored in financial economics and political science . yeonghwa , who had the expectation to someday work for the family company , never would have guessed he’d manage to go viral on instagram when he was spotted in the background of a video while attending a party in a classic ‘ help me find this guy ’ scenario . to learn that he was a part of such a wealthy family aided in the sudden rise of his popularity , which also pushed him into the world of paparazzi , fame , and socialites .
headcanons.
yeonghwa unfortunately knows that he’s attractive and idk if that’s a good thing MJCXHVBCX . he’s not an asshole about it but he’s just a handful .
he still butts heads with his dad , especially since his father wants him to work for hyunsung . he does want to , but he also wants to be able to enjoy his twenties unlike his father . somehow , his grandfather is supportive of yeonghwa’s choices , despite putting the same pressures on yeonghwa’s father .
he doesn’t live with the family anymore , instead he moved out and lives comfortably in a fancy condo in manhattan . yeonghwa can drive but he doesn’t want to , so he’s often driven around new york in a blacked out bentley bentayga .
i have more but my brain isn’t working right now MKVCNXC .
wanted connections.
i will burst into flames for the relationship that relates back into his headline ! he was in a committed relationship with his ex - boyfriend , and it was one that lasted for a couple of years . they could have attended columbia together or they met at literally any point , but there’s no real malice between them after their break up ( except that yeonghwa may still have feelings for him ) .
a best friend ! and they’re quite literally the best of friends , where they’re super close and have a lot of fun together .
give me enemies or give me death ! just two people who do not get along at all and spend most of their time around each other arguing . there could literally be any reason for them to dislike each other i just want HATE .
hook ups hehe . after the end of his relationship ( which he took very hard ) yeonghwa kind of fills the void by hooking up with anyone . he never stays the night and he most likely won’t even give you his name , but he’s down to have some fun .
a publicity partner ? not so much a pr relationship , but just someone that knows this chaotic world and whenever they’re together it gets the press talking . they will attend events together , and sometimes they’ll have fun with it by faking public arguments or fueling romance rumors .
i’m down to have yeonghwa fill any plots you’d like to do as well , but tysm for reading this monstrosity of an intro and i look forward to plotting with everyone !
