FULL Dragons Rising thoughts and opinions!

PLEASE BE AWARE SPOILERS FOR EPISODES 1-10 OF DRAGONS RISING LIES AHEAD!!! If you have not watched it PLEASE be aware that the following contains both massive and minor spoilers for the entire plot of part 1, if you haven’t seen the full thing and wish to go in without spoilers I HEAVILY recommend you save this for later. I put this message here for those who do not have the spoiler tags filtered.

so… new ninjago show! So far? Absolutely love it. It’s shaping up to be interesting and… …well written??! I really enjoyed It, especially the characterization. Sooo good. No concrete opinions on the overarching plot yet, since.. it isn’t out… BUT I do think it’s shaping up to be pretty great.

Now without further ado-

1: Characters

1.1: Arin

I’d say I enjoy him! I do like how he’s portrayed as giddy and all ready to learn, his dream basically just came true and it’s great. Man hyper fixated so much that he taught himself an ancient art style and like yeah that tracks.

I like his design - you can tell he’s had a rough life by the dirt on his shirt and the scratch marks on his face, but he tries not to give up hope or let it get to him too much. I also like how he has a haircut commonly associated with black people and they kept the theme by also having that one line about a haircut he tried to get reference Zane’s, since Zane also has a haircut commonly used by black people. Nice lil way of alluding to a potentially POC character while still using the Lego skin tones.

His little moments where he lets his struggles get the best of him and showcases how his life these past few years have also impacted him for not just the better but also worse - they’re great. Nice way of balancing his character and personality with his experiences while not losing the charm. Things like him being all self deprecating sometimes, or how he felt seen when people looked up to him - they’re great. Not as much as I’d like, but i get the feeling that while this part was more focused on Sora and her backstory, the next might be more centered around Arin.

On a more personal note - while I think he’s great and has potential, I dunno if he’s really my thing. I don’t hate him, I actually like him, just not as much as some other characters right now. I think he needs some time to grow on me, or it’s just not my thing. Either way, he’s cool. Also I love how he just slaps his medallion on his face when he gets second place… it’s so dramatic-

1.2: Sora

aaaa trans kitty cat girl my beloveddd she’s just ugghhhh I love her so much. Probably one of my favorite new characters. I liked her but was scared they’d go too far with the generic big sister trope and she’d never get any deeper than that but boy I’m glad I was wrong.

I love her design. The whites and blues a pinks? Really glad they didn’t just go for a full color again, it makes her more distinct! I also love the prosthetic arm SO MUCH. Rare to see any sort of disability rep in media. Even rarer to see prosthetics. (Also yes ik it’s possible it’s just like armor or smthn but given the way it moves I’m like 99% sure it’s a prosthetic, plus I could be wrong but It looks a lot like she has it off during the scene where Lloyd wakes them up, since you can’t see her gold/prosthetic arm where it would usually be. Only going based off of pictures and memory here tho so.) < — haaaahaaaa yeah so uh future Cookie here, wrote that part before the statement came out..yeah that aged poorly. Look maybe they said it’s armor but I REFUSE to accept it that is a prosthetic to me. My mind has engrained it as a prosthetic meaning I couldn't change my mind even if I tried. Leaving that part in tho for histories sake. - Also, the Japanese cat girl is such a vibe. I love how I was right with the blue scrunchie in my art of her.,The power of character design.

I loved her story so much. She was just a kid with a love for technology and making the world a better place, she got offered what she thought was her dream job only to realize the cruel truth she’d likely been ignoring, in such a traumatizing way by the person she looked up to. She got shunned not only socially but by her own parents, being told she was a horrible person for prioritizing the dragons life over her cities energy and questioning the dictatorship. She grew to hate her home and fled and made a life for herself. I love her lil deadname tease, I love how she feels towards her powers and how she feels like she isn’t all that Lloyd thinks she is, how she clearly has issues and also her personality. Her siblings energy with Arin is so good. I love when Lloyd and Arin doubt who’s side they’re on too. I like how she doesn’t learn to control her powers like some ex machina when it’s needed on her own. She tries her hardest but fails and instead of constantly letting that get her down she still tries to fight without them, even if it doesn’t always go well. Dhdhfjdjs I could rant all day.

So uhh yeah i love her. Kitty cat girl. I really like the duality between her and Arin but also the stuff they have in common like sndhdhsben. I mean it should be obvious I like her. She’s in my title thingymajig and I made art for her. But still. Hdjdjdhdh I LOVB HER.

Also this isn’t part of my analysis but when she gets fake IDs if you translate the ninjagan on her card it reads “Sora Surname” as a placeholder and I think it’d be hilarious if we just started using that as her last name tag since this community is obsessed with them. Sora Surname. It’d be so funny. Please tag your posts Sora Surname.

1.3: Euphrasia

So like when dragons rising first released I saw quite a few peoples hating on this girl and imo I actually really like her. I feel like the hate is sort of unfounded but I’ll get into that later.

I like her!! I like the idea of her being a cloud kingdom monk, i like the new cloud kingdom designs, I like that FINALLY girls seem to exist there, and her wanting to ignore and hide her powers because she’s happy where she is and she doesn’t want to lose it. Side note, I do prefer this cloud kingdom, I feel like it leaves more room. Like if someone doesn’t like the idea that they write destiny at all they can just.. chose to see them as a sort of religious group who doesn’t actually write fate, and then if you like the idea that they can control some amount of destiny you can say that they do have control over some parts of it, but that they simply can’t control everything and in the end it’s not only up to them but also the people of the world if the prophecies come true or not (personally I like to think that’s how it is/is implied) or that they COULD control destiny but can’t anymore after the merge. Idk you can stretch it more and I like that. So much better than the old cloud kingdom imo.

Back to Euphrasia, I do like her story and the little we see of her. I’m not actually bothered by the fact that she only appears in one episode. I’ve seen people complaining about it but come on guys, we literally only have ten episodes, would you have preferred that she randomly pops into imperium when she has no logical way of getting there and that’s where like every single other episode takes place?? There physically wasn’t anywhere else she would have appeared after episode 5 unless you made her join Sora and Arin, which not only would you need to lengthen the plot to develop her as a character with interactions since they JUST met, but also it’s refreshing to have a new EM who isn’t one of the new MCs.

the OTHER reason I see people hate her is because of Morro. Obviously, she’s the new master of wind, meaning Morro is dead, and his element went back to the cycle and found a new host. So people are upset.

guys. Guys we literally knew this. We’ve known he was dead since like 2015. We’ve known he moved on to the departed realm since 2016. We’ve known that the wind element has gone back to the cycle and found a new host for YEARS. That doesn’t mean Morro suddenly doesn’t exist. He just doesn’t have his element anymore. He could still appear in the new series, and even if he doesn’t I’m honestly ok with that. His arc is done and i get the feeling he’d go out of his way to avoid the ninja after the merge anyway. It isn’t Euphrasia fault, stop hating on her D:

I don’t have much else to say about her yet. I loved her story and moments and design and vibe and everything but there isn’t much else to talk about bc of the smol screen time amount, so yeah.

1.4: Wyldfyre

Silly wolf-raised-girl-trope-with-a-dragon-twist. I love her so much. Not sure I’d call her one of my favs yet (uuugh they’re all my favs… sobs..) only bc we didn’t see much of her character interactions n stuff.

Her design is so pretty. The colors make her look like a Qilin to me which I love so much.

I do like how she’s knowledgeable enough with humans to be able to interact with the rest of the cast while still keeping her draconic behaviors or knowledge that she gained by being raised around them. I think it’s a nice little limbo and I feel like we’re gonna see at least one identity crisis from her now that she’s in the group.

I’m usually not much of a fan of these types of characters but I actually really like her and I’m excited to see where they go with her. Plus, her powers and the lighting they give off are so pretty.

1.5: Lobbo

I had to include him. Look at him. I CALLED IT. I TOLD YOU ALL, ALL THE WAY BACK IN THE TRAILER DAYS I POINTED OUT LOBBOS MECH. I SAID I LOVED HIM ALREADY AND I WAS RIGHT. TAKE THAT INTERNET!! I unironically love him he’s so funny nobody understands him he’s just THERE with parental and relationship struggles and it’s just so funny to me. Little silly orb man. Now onto the villains!

1.6: Empress Beatrix

So I like… love her design, it’s so menacing and I think she’s so awesome looking. Super gender too. I find her weird rules funny but also sometimes I want to punch her in the face. Like.. why did she get so mad about Rapton being incompetent, but then.. fire Ras… who didn’t really do anything wrong except for fail that ONE time.. instead of Rapton.. who physically isn’t competent whatsoever?? Like I don’t get it?? It felt so random. Maybe it’s some form of her wanting to feel superior and in control so she got rid of Ras as a statement. But then… why not also fire Rapton, who thinks highly of himself bc of the position you gave him?.. I dunno I don’t get it maybe they’ll tell us in part 2.

1.7: Lord Ras

Ah yes, the guy people seem to really like. I’ll be honest, I don’t get the appeal?? Like his design feels out of place, which I guess is intentional but I just.. don’t really like the look of the awkward head mold. It’s a personal thing ig. His personality is just kind of boring to me and we don’t know anything else about him because he’s that scary bad guy general except oh wait he screwed up once and got thrown in prison!! Like I don’t get it?? Look guys he’s not even that attractive. I might be aroace but even I can tell that much. It’s the voice isn’t it. Y’all are simping for the voice smh /lh

I guess his whole “plan” thing is a bit interesting but even that isn’t something I’m too interested. I kinda just found him pretty boring and I felt disinterested whenever he showed up.

like in the last few episodes it felt like they were trying to make us feel bad for him with the way the empress treated him but like, they don’t give us anything to feel bad for?? I dunno the whole thing felt awkward and clunky.

Maybe my opinions will change in part 2 where we’re probably gonna find out more about him, but until then, meh.

also I want to punch him in the face sometimes. I dunno he’s just being all th e r e and boring and so I want to punch him and get him off of the screen because it’s like an annoying type of boring. Yk like an annoying torturous silence. But boring. Yeah that. No offense I don’t hate him I just want to punch him off of my screen.

1.8: Rapton

Silly goofy guy. I’ll be honest I found his incompetence a bit.. annoying? Like I get he’s supposed to be comic relief but like it doesn’t feel right sometimes?? It’s just a personal thing ig. I feel like having some comic relief villains is ok but imperium just has too much comic relief in their villain roster?? Like Ras and Beatrix are pretty much the only capable ones in a fight. Ras got chucked in prison and barely shows up or does much, and Beatrix still has comic relief elements in her ridiculous laws and such. LaRow could count but shes not really a competent fighter since she cowers and nopes out the second Arin tries to fight her. I feel like it just.doesn’t work with imperiums vibe having rapton as a general, and honestly i didn’t find his jokes funny (but ofc humor is subjective). I don’t dislike him, I just don’t really care about him. I want to punch him in the face whenever he shows up but out of annoyance.

1.9: Dr. LaRow

She shows up and I want to punch her but this time out of malice and hatred. She’s a good villain and I like how they handled her but I physically can not feel anything but spite for this woman and I love that. Great villain. Hate her with every fiber of my being which is how it should be.

1.10: Dorama

I don’t have much to say about him asides from that the magician vibes are fun and that I want to punch him in the face for his attitude towards living beings.

… apparently I really feel like punching all of them. Huh. I swear I’m not like this usually I dunno something about all these villains is just punchable.

2: Interactions

Honestly? I’d say the interactions in this show were great. Sora and Arin are great foils to each other and best buds. My only thing is I hope the show doesn’t try to push a ship (I’ve seen people complain about shipping them and while I see their dynamic in a platonic familial sense I have nothing against people shipping them romantically atm since we don’t know of anything that’d make it problematic, I just don’t think it should be forced in canon) but I choose to be hopeful and say it probably won’t. Lloyds interactions with his new students are amazing and so funny srfvjrtfjer Lloyds really gone from the guy who didn’t know what a VCR was to the guy who probably still doesn’t know what a VCR is (somehow) but has now adopted two strays and needs to pretend to know what a VCR is. It’s so funny. The sibling bicker between Lloyd, Kai and Nya was ok, I guess? Never cared much for the RGB sibling idea… Iknowww shame on me but uh was it just me or did the interactions feel a bit… forced? I dunno, something about it just felt off. Was it just me or did anyone else feel like that?? Also Soras interactions with Dr. LaRow and Rapton… so good… Overall I like the interactions even if the ones between the ninja felt a bit forced.

3: Writing & plot

So I enjoyed the writing.. specifically the characters dialogue and such. I think this season has some really good balance between dialogue and characters. I liked the pacing a lot up until the imperium episodes. I don’t have a problem with them on their own - I liked the conflict it sparked and the stakes and seeing Sora’s backstory, but I also felt like it dragged on too much?? Like Sora kept escaping and then getting captured and then escaping and then going back like it felt really backtracky and it kind of messed with the consistency and the pacing, yk?? Also the battle with the protacs definitely felt like the writers were trying to stall or smthn. Idk.

Also, did Zane popping up feel.. unnecessary and rushed to anybody else?? Like the IDEA was awesome and cool, things were great up until they opened the pod.. then Zane pops up and he doesn't really do anything except for immediately become a generic background exposition tool, he barely even interacts with Kai and Nya. Having him there felt so… unnecessary? He doesn’t DO anything. You could get rid of him and just give them another way of activating the monastery and it’d change nothing. Plus it’s NOT explained and he’s just so… unemotional and “whatever” about it that it just… feels so unnatural?? Idk I can’t explain it. Maybe it’s just me not liking how they seem to be reverting to making Zane more of a robotic exposition tool like after s4. I don’t like it. You could’ve just left him to part 2 though.

I’ve seen ppl complain about the “retcons” with Lloyd saying he trained under Master Wu for years and being shown as a child, but like, they’re not really retcons…? From what I remember they never give us any sort of specifics towards the timeframe in which S1-S2 takes place outside of S2 taking place only a few weeks after the S1 finale, but that doesn’t really apply to the ENTIRE season. It’s not Impossible that the events we see all take place over the course of a few years, since most of the episodes aren’t connected to each other beyond the overarching plot. And nothing ever said that Wu didn’t train Lloyd. What we see isn’t the only training that took place. Maybe I forgot something important that says otherwise, but the idea that S1-2 took place in only a few weeks/months is completely fan made, meaning it wasn’t a retcon. Sure, maybe it seems weird, but it’s never been stated otherwise. Now, if it IS a retcon, I’m not complaining for one. Why, you might ask? Because them using child Lloyd and saying he trained under Master Wu for years might mean we can FINALLY be rid of the Tomorrows tea confusion!! We could have him grow up naturally, or age him up and clarify and elaborate on how it works, we could FIX the entire stupid argument that has been going on for YEARS. I for one am ecstatic at that possibility. Also, it means we might get additional context and stuff for S1-S2, which sounds fun ,so honestly I have no problem with it. There have been worse plot holes/retcons *glares at Nyad from across the room*

I can’t say much about the overarching plot yet, since obviously it isn’t out, but it’s shaping up to be pretty exciting!

4: Worldbuilding

I feel like I can’t judge this TOO much considering the nature of part 1. I absolutely loved the crossroads and the mix of different cultures, real splatsville vibes, but I do feel like we should get to see more of how the other realms are doing. Imperium felt a bit.. strange? Like it’s just a massive city of humans right?? I don’t really get why it had to be an entire separate realm, I think it should’ve been more unique on like a larger scale. I dunno though. Honestly there wasn’t much worldbuilding in this part, so I hope we get more soon.

5: Visual design & animation

Okay so this new series is BEAUTIFUL. The colors and the backgrounds are so much more vibrant, the lighting is so pretty, the environments are amazing, they kept the wild brain clothing textures and just uuuugh I love it so muchychxhazjchcjdiwhthfs the animation felt very expressive and ueuahahehfhdsj I have no words props to wildbrain and the animators/artists. It’s so pretty.

Overall this part was great and I’m really excited to see what comes next!!

Im reading the comics, I've gotten though s1 and s2, and will eventually get to talking about them (I've already cropped all the parts from s1 I wanna talk about) and Riven has a very specific characterization, and I really love it

Let me talk about what makes up his v character

Fuck you, there is a mission

This is the first thing you'll notice. Comics Riven is probably the first to remind everyone that, yes, this is a mission, not a chance to hang out with the girls, stay on target

He also is notably always trying to get anything related to RF done as quickly and well as possible

Like literally anytime he shows up in the comics during a mission he avoids any sidetracks as hard as he can to focus solely on the mission

He will bitch at the others to get their heads in the game and get their asses in gear and it's really funny

Riven gets into this whole huge fight bc he thought someone was shit talking RF

The Shab Stone comic is p good but it goes against Riven's very strong "prioritize the mission at all costs vibes". Riven would not go rouge, he knows he can't pull off his idea with only one~two people. Bitching the entire time and being soo salty and passive aggressive at Helia it makes everyone uncomfortable? Yes. I can definitely see him fucking needling Helia hard. I can't see him running off tho

Like, Riven is the only guy who hasn't let a mission gone sideways bc he wants to hang out with one of the Winx up until this point. My favorite dialogue from him is when Musa is aggressively shooting her shot and Riven is like "hmm I think this might be a lizard type monster"

He simply would not break rank, he'd be a fucking major asshole and attempt to bully Helia into listening to him. But not intentionally endanger the mission

That's something only s1 show Riven would do in his fucking dumbassary, s1 comics Riven is too busy drinking his respect RF juice

Like yes Riven is a dumbass and an asshole, and I would understand and respect this conflict if it was s1 show Riven, but s2 comics Riven would die before doing something that harmed a mission. Please let him be awful in character consist ways

He is always extremely serious looking around Musa in s1 except for the first time he had a proper conversation with her

Riven talks to Musa, calls her beautiful, like literally that's what he says, Musa somehow interprets this as him mocking her (which fuels my hc that Riven just had a voice that sounds mocking and sarcastic which causes him so many problems) and from this on in the s1 comics he maintains a serious ass face when looking at her

Throughout the comics it's reassured that yes, Riven does have feelings for Musa. No clue how that works with him dating Darcy but no one ever accused these comics of being canon

My favorite interpretation of this is that Riven, after completely wiping out with Musa the first time, put all his focus into trying to impress her and it still didn't work but it didn't work in a funny way

In my translation he calls the Winx girlies

Nothing to add that just made me very happy

He is a MASSIVE introvert

Comics Riven will avoid large groups of people like it's his fucking job. He will go to a party and sit on the sidelines because he fucking hates people

He's always on the fringes. He's outside during the dance, sitting on the beach when everyone is chatting in a cafe, he literally runs off to where ever he's least likely to be bothered and doesn't come back

There's a magic spell that makes people argue in one comics and Riven is never shown to argue with others because he straight up doesn't speak. Yes, that could be because the writers didn't want to write about him, but literally every other boy except Helia got in on it. Riven literally took a vow of silence so he wouldn't get mixed up in that shit, amazing

He doesn't even give his opinion on the mission most of the time, or anything. He stands far away from his squad and is kinda vibes in the background. The strongest "people....no thank you" energy. The only person he visibility likes being around is Musa and he gives her small smiles and holds her but is still pretty fucking quiet when it just them and if there's a mission usually talks about the state of that

He is so bad at talking to people I love him

He's everything I wish s3 Riven was

This is literally ideal s2 on Riven. Someone tried to piss him off by saying Musa was with some guy and Riven was like "Literally where does it say that this is any of our business"

This is full s2 Riven setting up a date for Musa with someone else energy and I am absolutely living for it

He's in his lane, focused, flourishing. Completely disgusted with the idea of parties and hiding out back on a rock somewhere enjoying solitude

Can I request you do an analysis of the last scene in season 2 episode 6? Where Anne is panicking because she thinks Ann is going to leave her for a man - as has happened in the past - And Ann reassures her that she’s not going anywhere with a gentle caress.

such a sincere moment and the scene makes me want to celebrate how far we have come as a society now that lesbians can have kids together (not that it’s very accessible for everyone), and legally get married (in most countries, we def have a long way to go still). On top of being such a beautiful moment between Anne and Ann!, they deserve endless amounts of kudos for the part they played in blazing a trail for lesbians today. I really loved this episode.

Anyway, I’d love to hear your breakdown/thoughts on the scene if you have a moment! Def the best GJ blog out there!

Okay, let's do it, let’s break it down!!!

First off I wanna start saying that that scene is long 6 minutes and 15 seconds and I want us all to appreciate this because, really, scenes this long are a real treat. They are so well thought out and they always end up being my favourite. For reference, the hilltop scene is 5 minutes and 45 seconds and the scene where the Ann(e)s argue at the end of 1x04 – one of my absolute loves – is 7 minutes and 38 seconds long. But, enough with data!

A couple of random things before going into it in more details:

I love LOVE the domesticity we see in this scene with Anne pouring tea to Ann, offering her some biscuits and the way in which Ann declines the offer just with a wave of the hand.

We can also subtly pick up how different Anne and Ann are in the way they administer the household, with Ann calling Hemingway by her first name – Thank you, Rachel – opposed to Anne who calls all the servants by their last name – Thank you, Hemingway – I love how this kind of details are woven through the dialogue and how, with just a couple of words or gestures, we’re able to pick up different dynamics between the characters. And of course small things like this, when they’re done right (like in this case), bring the characterization to a whole new level.

This is gonna be long so get yourself a cup of tea or coffee and let’s go!

As soon as AL sits down it’s clear that there is some tension between the Ann(e)s. Ann’s all fake smiles and from the way she looks at Anne, from the way she swallows before talking we can see that she’s thinking about a way to bring up what is going round and round in her head. Anne picks it up too – something is not right.

After a while AW says that she’s been thinking about the division of the estate, the problems with her sister and that she’s not sure what it is all for if in the end everything will go to the Sutherlands anyway...

– And without children, I’m not sure what it is all for. – This is where Anne starts being terrified. As soon as AW says this, AL is thinking what she will only say during the second half of the scene: We do things for us! – But here she keeps her thoughts and fears for herself. She wants to understand what Ann Walker really means. We’ve already seen in season one that it takes time for Ann Walker to really explain herself, Anne knows this and so, little by little she tries to understand more and more. Is Ann saying she wants children? AW not being sure what it is all for could mean that she doesn’t think that doing things just for the two of them is enough?

Anne is nervous, she puts down her cup of tea, she adjusts herself on the chair, she smooths her waistcoat... she pretends she’s calm.

– And is it not God’s purpose that we...people have children? – Is it tho?

We’ve heard Anne say before how being how she is is all natural, is God given, so can it really be God’s purpose for them, for her, to have children? When having children means being with a man? – It would be absurd, it would be perverse – No. Anne doesn’t think that that’s everyone's purpose. But what does Ann think?

– I suppose I’d always imagined that, one day, I would have children of my own, that’s all. – It breaks my heart how AW says this line. You can hear her voice almost breaking. She’s scared, just as much as AL is. She’s scared about saying this out loud, she knows Anne could take it wrong. And AL tries to understand and tries to bring everything to a rational, logical level. She doesn’t lose her temper here, even tho we can already see how scared she is to have this conversation. How could Ann want children when she feels a sort of repugnance to forming any sort of connection with a man? It doesn’t make sense, does it?

And here comes the conflict.

The way they think about things is very very different. Ann Walker imagines things without really thinking about the real, practical aspect of it all while Anne Lister’s goal is to make things happen. I love how this scene shows us how different the Ann(e)s are in the way they think about their future. On one hand we have Anne who is very pragmatic. She’s realistic and logical, she is able rationalise what things mean – You mean, you’d imagined children, but not marriage to a man? – For her this doesn’t make any sense. She doesn’t entertain impossible thoughts. Even in the way she says to Ann later on in the scene that being with her is a great sacrifice, she says – practically – what being with her means, it means they will never have children, it means they will never have a marriage certificate, it means they have to face public scrutiny, it means they have to make sacrifices. So they have to be certain of what they are doing, they have to evaluate everything.

On the other hand we have Ann Walker who’s the opposite. When she says that she wants to be with Anne more than anything in the whole world that is a very romantic thought but not a pragmatic one. She wants to be with her, but what does it really mean to be with Anne Lister? She’s driven by her love for Anne and that is really the only thing that matters to her. She says that but at the same time she talks about children without fully realising that the two things are not reconcilable. She can’t want both of those things, it’s impossible – and what if, one day, her desire of having children ends up being greater than her desire of being with Anne? This is what Anne Lister is thinking, and this is one of the things that terrifies her.

And here, here you can really see the terror in Anne’s eyes become greater and greater. She struggles to keep it together. The way she closes her eyes when she says – It does signify – is heartbreaking and it reminds me of the – What? – she shouts at the end of episode 4 in season 1. She immediately thinks about her conversation with Marian and, like with Marian, she can’t come up with a counter argument to what Ann Walker just told her. If she wants to be a mother, well then, what can Anne do? What can Anne say?

But Ann Walker wants her to fight for them, for her. She doesn’t like that Anne says that she won’t be an obstacle for something she has very much at heart. – Don’t say that – This season Ann has been feeling invisible, ignored, she’s seen her wife do 100 different things and she feels put aside at times. She also knows something happened with Mariana and she’s finding out all these new things about Anne – so, I believe, she wants to see Anne care for her, she doesn’t want to see her give up so easily.

But Anne doesn’t even hear that – she can’t keep it in anymore, she’s upset and she’s about to explode. I love the quote of the meteor and I love how she stands up from that table.

I love how she can’t keep still – she was so composed before but now her anger, sadness, fear are too great and they take over completely. She is so terrified that she’s actually shaking.

– Things like this, all my life. I pretend it gets easier, but it doesn’t. – What a confession this is. Anne who always rises above it all, who’s strong, who can’t be touched by the things people say about her, is admitting here that it all gets to her. With time she’s just become good enough at pretending it doesn’t affect her but in reality it does. And it’s beautiful how she lets Ann Walker see this very vulnerable aspect of herself. Now she is not alone anymore, now she has someone to share her fears and insecurities with. Now she has Ann.

The way AW says “Anne” right after breaks me – she is so calm, her voice is so steady – in her mind she hasn’t thought one second about breaking it off with Anne and you can hear it in the way she says her name.

And finally, Anne says what she’s been thinking from the start – We do things for us! That’s who it’s for. So that we can have a life together. We matter.

And, again, look how different her body language is here opposed to the beginning of the scene where she was trying to keep calm and they were sitting at the table. Her body shakes, she moves her hands around, she has a heavy weight on her chest and you can feel it by the way she breathes. She’s so fucking terrified.

Oh and here comes the line that personally speaks to me the most – Having children isn’t the only reason to strive and do well and better oneself and be happy – This right here. It’s amazing that today we have so many opportunities and something like this (having a child if you’re in a same sex relationship) isn’t impossible anymore but personally I feel that more than that the message I’m taking away from this scene is this: my relationship doesn’t need a child to have meaning or be considered “complete”.

Anne doesn’t want children, doesn’t care about children, doesn’t think about how having children would be, her life is full even without having children. She loves her life the way it is. She understands the desire someone else might have of being a mother, yes, but that’s not something she personally dreams for herself. And I just love this on a very personal level.

Even the way in which she speaks about it to Ann Walker – [A child] It’s something that I can never give you – the focus is not on her, it’s on Ann. She’s upset and sad not because she can’t be a mother, she’s upset because in that moment she’s realising that Ann might want something she won’t be able to give her. And here’s another thing that terrifies her: not being enough for Ann.

Another thing that I love about this whole scene and about Suranne’s performance is the pauses she makes to breathe and the way in which you can really see Anne struggling to not break down even more and cry. It really makes you feel how scared and terrified Anne is during the whole exchange. I particularly love the pause she does before saying – I need to know about that now – I love how that line is delivered because you can really feel how scared Anne is to know the answer to that request. What if Ann Walker says to her that, yes, she might want children in the future? What happens then? Where do they go from there?

What the Ann(e)s have, what they really have, is the promise they made each other, in private, in secret, something only the two of them know about. That’s all they’ve got. They don’t have a marriage certificate – We can never have a piece of paper that says we have any kind of legal union – they don’t have a child to bind them. They literally only have each other and the promise they made. There is nothing “from the outside” that binds them together, no security, nothing. Imagine the trust they have to have in each other to be sure that, one day, the other one won’t just walk away.

– You’re frightening me. – I’m frightening you? – This literally broke me. Here, right here is when Anne admits to be frightened, terrified.

Ann Walker says “You’re frightening me.” and with that reversed question Anne is basically saying “Oh, you are frightened, well you have no idea how much you are frightening me. You have no idea how terrified I am that all this you’re saying could mean that you’ll leave me one day.”

– You have to be certain. That this, here, with me, is what you want. – Here is another bit that I absolutely adore for the same reason of the “I need to know about that now”. The way in which Anne says this, the pauses she makes, good lord, she is scared of finishing the sentence, she’s scared to hear what Ann Walker will say after.

And this all parallels to the hilltop scene, AL asking AW if she’s ready to take the sacrament with her, etc. etc. – and like then, Ann Walker is ready to reassure Anne Lister that this is absolutely what she wants, no doubts about it.

– I want to be with you more than anything in the whole world. You know that! – There is no hesitation in her answer. None. What I find interesting tho are the words AW chooses. She just wants to be with Anne Lister, whatever that entails. She doesn’t answer something like “Yes I understand and this is what I want”, she literally says that the only thing she wants is being with Anne, fuck the rest. AW doesn’t stop to think of what that could mean, of what sacrifices she'll have to make, she doesn’t stop to think about all the possibilities, she just knows that she loves AL and that she wants to be with her. That’s all.

And here we see the way in which Ann Walker shows affection and love. The caring touches I’ve already talked about, that were so clear in episode 1. Ann comes closer. She wants to both reassure Anne and smooth things over by getting close to her wife and comforting her physically and not only with words.

But Anne is too scared and she’s still pretending to be stoic. She’s also protecting herself from disappointment. We’ve already seen her have this attitude, on the hilltop scene when Ann walks closer to her and she instinctively takes a couple of steps back.

I love how here we see the same thing happening but it’s clear that their dynamic has changed. Ann’s bolder and goes straight for Anne’s hand – and Anne is not so gentle, she’s not scared to hurt Ann with her rejection. They are comfortable with each other and it’s clear they know each other in a more profound way.

Ann knows Anne too well, she knows what she needs and so she gives her space, at first...and when she comes closer again it is to show Anne that she is ready to make all the sacrifices in the world for her.

I love how Ann takes a moment to think about what to do, to think about what is the best way to reassure her wife. It’s almost as if Ann has learned from Anne what to do in these kind of moments. AW comforts AL in the same way in which AL comforts her – getting closer, kissing her hand, caressing her cheek, being physically close, words are not enough sometimes, and AW is not really good with words anyway.

There’s a little bit of a power struggle at the beginning – AW wants to mend AL’s wounds but AL doesn’t want to let her at first. But AW knows what Anne really needs and doesn’t let go, it’s as if she’s saying to Anne: “Don’t worry, you can be vulnerable with me, I won’t hurt you, trust me”. She takes Anne’s hand and I LOVE how we can see surprise on Anne’s face here.

And those hand kisses y’all!!!! Good God hELP – I’m perfectly articulated and focused discussing anything else but my GOD the hand kisses literally make me break down and cry and lose all ability to properly express my thoughts.

And this is all I’m gonna say about the hand kiss here...

...the last time Ann kissed Anne’s hand was when they were exchanging rings and here HERE, DOING THIS, ANN is bASICALLY renewing the promise she made – and the hand she kisses is the hand with the wedding ring!!!!! SHE’S KISSING THE RING!!!!!

Can we let this sink in??? Like, without saying anything Ann is saying so fucking much! She’s saying “I married you, I am your wife, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, whatever happens.” Can you hear me cry? Ann Walker owns my life!!

And then Ann puts Anne’s hand on her cheek, to feel her close, and she closes her eyes while kissing her palm and yall I CANT. And the way it all parallels to the chaumiere scene and to the hilltop scene like – I’m speechless!!

And when, finally, Ann Walker caresses Anne’s cheek, Anne can’t pretend anymore (and again beautiful parallel with the hilltop scene).

I mean, what we learned from all this is that when Anne’s not strong enough, Ann Walker will be strong enough for the both of them – You are stronger than you think. –

this show is a masterpiece

I visited your blog to find that great edit you made of Alex Wilder again, because I think it's just great and one of the best edits i've seen of Alex. I was wondering though, what did you think of Rowell's time on the comic series. I really do admire how much she cares about the characters, I really do, but I had a massive problem with the progression of the stories. I just feel like it would have been better if it was in a show rather than a one comic that comes out once a month

OMG you came to the right person because i have many thoughts on Rowell's run...also thank you for the kind words abt my Alex edit its one of my favs and i always forget it exists

In terms of Rowell's run. It started off as one of my favorite runs and as time went on I grew to really dislike it.

I think there's some stuff she does I REALLY love - I think she gets Alex on a level a lot of writers really don't and does some genuinely interesting things with him which is very important to me personally since he's one of my favs. I sometimes like to look at the stuff she wrote for him in a vacuum and pretend the rest of that run doesn't exist LMAO. The stuff with Molly and her reluctance to abandon her parents because she was so young when she lost them I find very compelling as well, as well as stuff that begins to be explored with Chase in terms of How To Cope With Your Dead Girlfriend Coming Back to Life And Still Being 16, but unfortunately it isn't really resolved. Gib also is a fun addition to the cast and I like the parallels between him and the rest of the Runaways. Anka's art is ofc beautiful as always (kinda a minor issue tho but I wish he had gone less nugoth for Nico and stuck to her more classic romantic/trad goth looks - it makes her look so artificial to me)

It's been a hot second so I really need a reread but iirc i didn't have as much of an issue with pacing as I did with some weird characterization and plot choices so I don't really know if another format would have improved it, but maybe if a show or something stretched out the runtime of each arcs. I saw someone say once that Rowell is a fix-it writer and i think that really describes the problems with this run, which is that she's far more interested in resolving ""plot holes"" and bringing back old characters than telling new interesting stories. I put plot holes in quotation marks because frankly a lot of these things are not plot holes. The fact that we don't know how the staff of one works is NOT a plot hole, its part of it being a weird fucked magic artifact. Making it a person kind of undermines everything Nico has gone thru in the rest of her arc and adds some weird ass implications to every other writer's work. Even with things that actually are issues, comic history is full of holes not everything exists to be repaired especially if it comes at the cost of cool stories.

THE ROMANCE ARCS feel engineered just to kinda create cute moments rather than good stories. I didn't find Nico and Karolina's relationship issues believable or interesting at all especially considering their respective histories. I find them and a lot of the cast to be vastly OOC but that's pretty typical for comics I guess. Victor and Gert's romance is one of my main issues as well because it just seems kind of out of nowhere to me and just kind of an effort to pair off the cast. I don't feel like they have any chemistry, Vic (and the rest of the cast but mostly him) feels really dumbed down and his complex struggles with bodily autonomy are simplified down to him wanting to hold his new girlfriend. Just overall his characterization in this comic completely revolves around Gert and it sucks. Gert in general is a huge issue for me because while I find her an interesting character in her original form, in this run she kind of monopolizes the entire comic with her arcs always taking precedence. AND THEY DONT EVEN DO ANYTHING INTERESTING WITH HER. SHE LITERALLY DIED AND CAME BACK AND LOST YEARS OF TIME WITH HER FREINDS WHO HAVE GROWN CLOSER IN HER ABSENCE and instead they write this very like cartoonishly evil fatphobia plot which doesn't seem interested in saying anything besides "fatphobia bad :(" I normally hate to like try to read author intention but its difficult to me not to think Rowell did a bit of a self insert/authors pet situation here.

TLDR - OVERALL I think the comic could REALLY have benefited from less characters with longer arcs rather than trying to fit everything and the kitchen sink from the last 20 years of runaways history. But I also think it is unfortunately one of the best and only runaways comics we've gotten recently so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ def need a reread to fully collect my thoughts as well

My basic thoughts on the whole idea of sonadow in the sonic movie 3:

Though I appreciate the very gay henchmen, I am very tired of villan gays when there's not an equally gay hero.

Which Is why, when people start going "SONADOW! SHASONI! MAKE IT HAPPEN"

I realize that hey, even if it's subtle-oh God is there a definite possibility.

Of course, as much as I'd love that happening, with all these cute love shit- here's my little hot take/thoughts on it(?):

1. If shadow dies in the end like in-game, you understand that-that's a very tragic story of major pinning. (If the words "I love you" come out I'm gonna barf. I've always been a sucker for subtly, so to me that line is saved for when your supposed to be crying and bawling. Never liked that line anyways, cause when performed right you don't even need to say it to get the point across yknow?.)

2. If they're doing a "I can fix him" thing I'm going to laugh in anguish.

3. Does.. does sonic.. even need romance? Does shadow need it like...at the point where he is mentally at, I think it'd be best to keep any romance one-sided untill they can finally put the past behind them-or what not.

4. If knuckles joined the family of the W's then is shadow just gonna like.. join to ? (if he's alive that is) In that cause it would be pretty weird to ship either way cause they're basically adoptive family members.

5. How subtle are they going with this? As cool as it is, not everybody is a shipper. Not everybody wants to see ships in their kids movie especially with already established characters.

(Like, kissing? In my robot movie? Seriously??)

6. Other ships can happen too, shadow x sonic ain't the only plausibility. Neither is Rouge x knuckles. Who knows what the writers might accidentally and purposely come up with.

Okay with that being said, I'm gonna spew out all my thoughts that goes against my own doubts on this.

As a major shipper of this, platonically or not, I've collected more thoughts on this movie shasoni idea.

1. Hints of very queer, gay stuff (as far as I'm aware) is very blatant. (Eggman maid outfit and coffee foam hearts is VERY obvious.) Of course this is only appears on the more villainous side. (The usual villan queers. I'm so tired of it.)

Now, with that being said. There still is, and I mean a very blatant gay ship going on here. (Unsure if one-sided tho) which leaves for the possibility of other ships such as that one.

For examplee~ shasoni! It's a possibilty- probably not a likely one, but still possible!

If there's villan gays, there's gotta be a gay heros if you get what I'm saying.

2. Amy is gone? Well, they're actually doing something similar to what happened with Tails in sa2. The whole "mabye, mabye not" when it comes to tails being in the game/being playable. That's why, (according to what others have told me) Tails plays in an airplane-mech thing instead of flying like he did in Sa1.

This is an odd choice- since Amy was most notably responsible for causing shadows whole "Maria actually asked me to save the world" thing.

Now if she doesn't appear, who else can fill in that spot? There's about 4 canadaties: Tails, Sonic, Knuckles and Rouge. (I doubt Robotnik or Stone can reach shadow like the compassionate Amy can.)

Tbh, I'd scratch Tails and knuckles off immediately, since they don't really get that interaction with shadow to the degree Rouge and sonic do.

Leaving Sonic and Rouge at a tie. Rouge, would obviously make the better choice to rejuvenate shadow's manipulated memories, but her selfish nature/pride may get in the way of being that 100% in the moment, plea of help.

Seeing as Sonic, is characterized diffrenetly, as well as some other characters, you could assume that Rouge may be characterized diffrenetly too!

Of course, sonic still has that edge, as his interactions with shadow and the respect towards him he later gains (shadow even going as far as calling him "the ultimate lifeform" (yes he does say that. Im unsure if it was scrapped. If not, play the sa2 battle but longer than usual. There's a chance he says it after awhile.) (Also to add the whole "almost sacrificing himself in the process to save shadow" bit too.)

So yeah, Rouge and Sonic are at a tie on this one. Personally, I think Sonic has the edge- but who knows! Haha!

3. Both sa2 and the shadow spinoff game was said to be refrence for this movie during a interview/questonaire.

Depending on the timeliness they pick for what they're basing this off of, how else are they going to explain sonic being like.. totally on board with shadows antics?

I mean, like...^ the guy literally went "whoohoo!" (It's so adorable idk why but it is the cutest thing I've heard sonic say EVER) towards beating up a black..hound alien??

And is like "damn lol okay" while shadow goes and does the whole killing streak thing haha.

4. This is movie sonic, things can go diffrenet (not super deviate, but enough that it's still feels new.) If they want to, they could have the hedgehog be really fucking gay, generally queer, or just kinda not into any romance or kissing n stuff.

Honestly this is just to get my thoughts out. I don't dictate how the story's gonna go, I just wanted to rant. In the end, this is a movie for kids that I didn't watch (I watched through clips, analysis videos, and tumblr gifs okay? Don't judge. Either way idgaf.)

As long as it's not starting actually stuff that can get people in danger, then hey, it's entertainment. Ships are ships and this is just food for thought. Okay, hasta la vista.

Im honestly so sad because this could've been done so much better and i really am cursing out the writers room because irrespective of shipping, the writing is so off this season and the breakup could've been so much better.

ns crystalized thoughts so far, spoilers beyond this point

I felt it was a bit rushed but i mostly really liked the different ways the ninja coped with nya's loss, the way it was different from s4 when they lost zane. I particularly enjoyed that jay was being a bit of a dick about the fact that he copes differently than everyone else and that his assumption that noone cared/ remembered besides him actually ticked kai off. I've been waiting for a kai vs jay fight forever and this one payed off

super loved how nya remembered and kept fighting to get back, also the dragon form is badass even if we aren't going to get it anymore after this

ASPHEERA yall dont understand how abnormal i am about her and how she came back. I love that she and wu had their petty contest moments, i love that lloyd kept his word to her despite it all. Most of all I just appreciate how much time was dedicated to her and the issue of breaking her out, and her characterization is just 👌

the fact that kai and jay were just smiling when they succeeded even as they were being put in jail because who fucking cares? they got nya back. its so :)

that being said, honestly I feel like the season got weaker in this second... fourth? half? whatever. It was a little frustrating to see the ninja, especially lloyd, so insistent that they were better than everyone else at the prison like. with the argument that ppl doing crime chose to be there, as if the ninja didn't just experience being strongarmed into breaking the law in order to save their friends. I dont expect cutting commentary on the prison industrial complex by ninjago or anything but it just kind of felt emotionally disconnected from everything we just experienced. I dont think they had to be nice but I just think lloyd shouldn't be mouthing off about displaying good behavior and crime being a choice when the last 2-3 eps were literally ABOUT that not being the case for the ninja

kai jumping across that gap with his fire powers was sick as hell tho ngl

I'm SO glad dareth and skylor have both returned and both seem to have a somewhat significant role this season. Especially dareth, I'm happy to see him here not just being made a laughing stock of

it was again, kind of rushed, but i appreciate nya Going Thru It, and her return to samurai x. also appreciate that pix was supportive even though she's taken the role at this point, they can share and the true samuraishipping can begin :)

I have mixed feelings on the sally ep and zane's arc. On one hand I like what they were going for, but I feel like some subtlety and interconnectedness with the rest of what was going on was lost. I didn't personally want to see zane having a breakdown or something after turning his emotions back on, but its frustrating that he turned it back on and didn't show any reaction of his grief returning, something like a bittersweet cry of relief would have been nice or something. Also sally was kind of treated a bit like a joke as well which sucked bc i liked her and her story :(.

sorry to fugidove fans, but I hate him. Maybe if he stopped being touchy-feely towards jay even after he set his boundaries multiple times I would have appreciated him more, but as is I was supposed to find that funny or something when it wasn't, and i hated it

oogh tho it picks up again with the mechanic stuff. Very cool to see him fight the ninja, I really liked the creativity of these sequences, and lloyd posing as him was funny as hell

my girl rumi is BACK hee hee hoo hoo, I saw it coming from a mile away but its fine because i like it when she exists and does her thing, and im just glad she didn't die that horrible death in s9 and that was the last we saw of her or anything

thats it, i might have more in-depth thoughts on these things later that i may or may not share, but these are it for now

hi, i hope you're doing well! i loved your fandom post as a noob and it served as an opportunity for me to understand any pre-conceived notions of fandom i may have as someone who's just dipping her toes in the playground.

this might be weird to ask (feel free to ignore) but i'm someone who tends to get into a fit of analyzing + focusing on various parts of a story, the characters, their characterization (non negotiable for me), relationships and so forth. however i also see fandom as a playground where you're exploring and experimenting with canonical happenings with whatever degree of accuracy or play. is it bad if that's my frame point regarding fandom and fics?

do you have any tips for navigating ao3 or making the best of it in terms of extensions? i don't have any fandom friends and as i mentioned before, i like reading fics and noting what works and doesn't work for me. however, i don't think there's any kind of option on ao3 for me to organize or leave comments for myself so i remember?

ooo and final thing (not sure if you addressed it), how the hell do you navigate fandom discourse when some takes are just so loud and wrong lol?

hi ty i'm glad you enjoy my posts! one thing i wanna reiterate tho--i am not an expert by any means on like fandom lmao my thoughts are just my thoughts like. i myself have only been involved in the marauders fandom for a single year and there are people who have a lot more time and experience interacting with these spaces.

as far as what you're talking about with like analyzing fics...i'm not entirely sure i understand the question? like, i don't think it's a bad thing to spend time thinking about characterizations and stuff as long as you're acknowledging that this is a space where people are allowed to experiment and play around with stuff however they want, and there's no like Single Truth about the way any story needs to be written.

as far as navigating ao3 and having a way to leave comments for yourself--you can bookmark fics and write notes in the bookmarks and leave tags and stuff! one thing to keep in mind though is that writers can see the stuff you put down in bookmarks, so if you have any negative commentary (even if it's just personal stuff you like or dislike that you want to keep track of for yourself) i'd say it's best to keep that bit private or just make like a separate spreadsheet or something. or if you really want to keep track of it all on ao3 then think up a rating or tagging system for yourself that won't clue a writer in if you didn't like their fic. like instead of putting down like...3/5 stars or whatever be like "pink is stuff i love, orange is stuff i like, purple is stuff i dislike" and then you can just tag pink orange and purple and a writer seeing it isn't gonna know what that means and get their feelings unnecessarily hurt, y'know?

and navigating fandom discourse....honestly i feel like i just avoid it lmao like i post my thoughts and shit on my blog but this is my own little corner of the internet, y'know? like honestly i'm not trying to insert myself into any fandom discourse or drama because it's just not worth it to me because this is literally just a hobby. like...it's fanfiction. if i see shit that really bothers me because it's so loud and so wrong i rant about it to my sister mostly or like to friends. or i write about it on here where i'm pretty isolated and just sharing thoughts with like The Circle Of Mutuals. but there are always going to be people being loud and wrong about things on the internet and sometimes you just have to accept it and move on for your own peace of mind lol

yk what's a character i really enjoy your take on? wanda.

i just love how you made her much more of the "hero" type, but also more grounded... how you didn't sacrifice her vulnerability in the face of being A Strong Powerful Woman, sth which i absolutely hate marvel doing with all of its female characters, just so patronizing, yk? so it's nice seeing a woman who is strong and everything with their powers, but still human. (disclaimer, i am a woman, so i'm not being sexist and saying all women are emotionally weak or whatever)

it's currently 3:35am so i don't have the energy to get into it, tho i wanted to share the thoughts i had before i forget haha, but i'd be grateful to know more about your thoughts are on the character

Wanda has been SUCH an interesting character to write, especially as the MCU Canon goes on and I stay firmly put in my 2017 era of post-Civil War-with-a-proper-ending-this-time-around. It's a bit frustrating at times because the MCU clearly has progressed with their plans for her (ehhmmmm plans is a strong word. More like "progressed with her character sans a road map") But when I started the Identity Saga, we were post Infinity War and she was far different than who she is now.

(Also, obligatory, fuck the MCU, don't like it don't want it they can keep it Imma just play with the characters over here thank you very much)

She didn't have much of a role in the first installment, though I always wanted her to be very close with Peter and even fill that hole left behind from Pietro. You see it off the bat, with Wanda reading Peter's mind and defending his innocence despite Steve freaking the Fuck out like an overdramatic cap would do 😅 From there she immediately latches onto him, and like Steve recently put it -- Wanda's full of emotion, and it shows.

I think what's made Wanda so great in this series is actually her age. I truly don't know what the fuck the MCU has been smoking because her age changed like, 3 times in canon -- at first she was a higherschooler, then they bumped up her to 24, then WandaVision apparently has her in her 30's (again not currently taking in any new MCU content so I'm just repeating what I've been told her) Apparently, they wanted her young but changed their minds when they proceeded with the Vision romance.

I always enjoyed the concept of her being much younger, which is why I worked her age to be 22 in the Identity Saga. Old enough to be "an adult", young enough to still miss the youth she didn't get.

And that helps a lot with her relationship with Peter. He's like a little brother to her, again filling that hole from Pietro but also giving her a love she can cling onto that's familiar.

MCU Wanda will always be a hero/Avenger in my books, and I truly don't care what canon or her TV show or MoM says. If you wanna talk COMIC Wanda, yeah that bitch psycho and needs some meds. But MCU Wanda started off strong -- we got to see a traumatized female hero get the chance to use her strength, abilities, and smarts to help better the world that broke her so badly. Only instead we got "woman depressed woman crazy woman crazy with superpowers oh no."

Eh, whatever. I like writing this Wanda the way I do. The per-Infinity War/Civil War era gave us some of the best characterizations, if you ask me.

I will say, it IS frustrating to see "strong" female characters be portrayed as unbreakable. The strongest woman cries. The strongest woman screams and yells and shouts that shit isn't fair and it hurts their heart and their soul. But then they keep pushing forward, working *through* that emotion -- unlike most men, who refuse to acknowledge that they even have emotions and because of it that makes them "manly" and "tough". To me, a strong female superhero would absolutely sob and break down and let their emotion show, because in doing so you're able to move past that struggle.

Like Steve said, Wanda is full of emotion. Both good and bad.

— dr. owens is such a solid dude and so much better than dr. brenner and the narrative barely gives him any credit. and the narrative doesn’t criticize Brenner nearly enough

— natalia dyer is a super good actor

— lumax is very cute, we also need more Lucas regardless

— I also love Antov

— I don’t like a lot of the narrative choices so far but the editing is very well done

— my least favorite straight pairing trope is when the couple breaks up and then multiple seasons later, instead of moving on, one or both “still likes the other” for no conceivable reason —characterization wise or narratively wise — purely bc of the writers’ heteronormativity and amatonormativity /g

— the Russia team’s narrative is the only one that doesn’t make zero sense so that’s a relief

— “my life started the day I met you” did it really Mike ??? really ???? THAT’S how you wanna say you care about her ???

— that whole speech,,, like— the whole premise of this season is basically “it takes a team!” but they didn’t have Will or Jonathan talk to her at all —her own brothers (yet they felt the need to keep Will in frame ??) I liked having a speech in premise but the way they wrote it was bad

— Ah yes, Mike idolizing El definitely isn’t shitty at all and is totally healthy 🙂 ! /s

— I don’t really think the writers knew the gravity of a white jock teenage boy nearly killing a young Black boy,,,,, (I’m white btw, it still just left me like 😬)

— idk if this was a writing problem or an editing one but having the bats attack Eddie seemingly right before they fall makes Eddie getting killed (while the rest of the fruity four don’t even get hurt) feel petty and pointless

— hopper with the dnd-ass sword was cool

— this sound engineer/editor is very good at their job

— I didn’t see Robin/Nancy much before but now I do 💅

— the whole “running away” thing is so shitty and genuinely harmful

ok, final thoughts:

I thought vol. 1 was incredibly well done and probably my favorite season off the bat (despite a few things like Nancy/Steve being shoved in, etc) but vol. 2…. I think many things were well done but I mostly had problems with characterization issues and how they balanced the narrative on the characters. overall pretty disappointing and completely non deserving of all the build up :(

Heyo! So I’ve been in the sterek fandom for quite some time now and I’ve been wondering about how you would describe stiles’ personality?

I’ve never actually sat down and watched a full episode of teen wolf (and honestly I’m not sure if I ever will considering everything I’ve heard about how they treat derek and his history but idk who knows I’m very curious in a lot of the plot lines and character development), and a lot of the stuff I know about the show I’ve scraped from fics, gifs, and meta posts

For me personally, Stiles’ personality and characterization is so fluid and nuanced that sometimes I have trouble pinning him down (tho derek doesn’t have trouble with that *wink wink*) So I would love to hear your thoughts! Sorry for the long ask, this grew legs and an ugly mug shdhdhhdjdcj anyhow have a great day :D

Well, everybody's got different perspectives and opinions on Stiles' personality, honestly. Even when you try to stick to 'canon' things, there's a lot of room for interpretation on the why when he does things, or what it says about him as a person, etc etc etc.

Personally, I see canon Stiles as kind of an asshole. I mean, I love him, and he does some incredible things, and he's clearly got an intense love for those close to him. But I do make him kinder in fics, or I at least make him regret being a dick.

In canon, we're given a Stiles who cracks 'dead baby' jokes (he's talking about human sacrifice, so the conversation was already plenty morbid. This wasn't out of the blue.) Who begs for Scott to let Jackson die (though it's made clear that this wasn't serious, and he later works to save Jackson's hide like ten times over), and who will mercilessly poke and prod at people's insecurities or painful pasts, especially when worked up. Isaac's previous abuse isn't a no-go topic. Derek having 'dated' (read: been assaulted at worst and at best, been lied to) serial killers isn't something he's going to tread lightly around. He doesn't try to soften things to save someone's feelings most of the time.

He's presented as someone who is incredibly impulsive, with his emotions, words, and actions. It's kind of implied this is because of his ADHD, but that doesn't explain how often the impulsively cruel or harsh things he says aren't retracted or apologized for, or just generally regretted. Yes, ADHD people are impulsive, and yes sometimes our mouths get away from us and we can end up saying some Fucked Up shit to people because we literally couldn't control the words coming out. But that doesn't mean we're cruel or evil or mean. We still feel bad for doing those things, and those of us who are decent people, try to fix or repair what we've messed up. I am...not a fan of how often ADHD is used as an excuse to make a character a dickhead because "he has no filter." No filter means we struggle to control our thoughts and what we say, it doesn't make us heartless.

So, when I'm writing him, I fix it. Even if he still Does something fucked up, I have him care that he did it. I have him realize what he did or said wasn't okay and respond to that knowledge in some way. Which to some people, means I'm just ignoring what a fucker he is, but imo it feels like a horrible fuckup on the creator's parts, so I'm just correcting the mistake. He's no less Stiles just bc I taught him to say sorry.

Anyway. I'm trying NOT to ramble here.

To answer your question, as best I can; Stiles is sarcastic. Stiles is passionate to a fault. His emotions are BIG, whatever they are. Good, Bad, or even apathy. Whatever feelings he has are just intense. He is very much a no gods, no kings, no masters, kind of man. There isn't really an 'authority' to him, except maybe his dad sometimes. He puts family, and those he considers family, First. But that doesn't mean he isn't selfless. Because he is. Incredibly so. Uncomfortably so.

He walks into gasoline for his friends. He puts himself in the position of losing the only parent he has left, for his classmates. He cares enough about strangers to insist a drunk girl he's spoken to for five minutes max stay hydrated and give her a bottle of water. He literally handed over his mind on a platter to a fox demon for someone he barely fucking knew, to keep her safe.

Loyal. Humorous. A fighter. Family-oriented. Clever. Passionate. Strong, physically, mentally, and emotionally. And a very good liar, in my opinion.

He doesn't lie very well in the show, not to people's faces. He'll stumble around a "I haven't seen him since the last time I saw him" or "are you asking me to tell you what I would have told you if I were going to tell you it?" but at the same time, he can repress and hide away his feelings and his pain in a way not even Derek manages.

He asked Caitlin questions about her girlfriend, and worked to solve the human sacrifices, literal minutes after finding out he'd just lost his oldest friend. He drove Lydia to the warehouse to save Jackson after having the shit beat out of him by a man who'd been learning to cause pain since he was a CHILD. And he never gives away how incredibly broken he is for more than a couple seconds. and it's a little frightening, because he convinces people in this show who are lie detectors that he's okay, when he's a fucking mess. Even Derek shows his pain.

You're right that he's nuanced, and part of that is because when you see him in meta or in fic, what you're seeing is a dozen versions of him sort of compressed into a flat image. Because he changes throughout the show, and while some of his core personality stays the same, a lot of stuff changes. So one fic might harp on his insensitivity, and callousness toward Isaac or how easily he says "just let them die" when talking about Derek or someone else. And then another will dive into how fucking far he's willing to go, travelling all the way to mexico and facing down a hunter clan a dozen times more powerful than the argents with no one but a banshee at his side, just to get Derek back. Or how he saw Malia hurting and sat with her on a couch and held her hand. One is a much earlier version of Stiles, from the start of the show, the other from his midpoint. Near the end, you're able to say that he was so torn about leaving Derek while he was dying, he had to be Begged to go save Scott. That he manipulated an ENTIRE FBI investigation in order to save and protect Derek. (im focusing on derek bc sterek, but also bc his relationship with Derek is the Biggest Arc he has in the show, and the most solid)

You're going to read about different versions of him, and I totally get how that's confusing.

We all sort of bleed ourselves into him and either bring certain canon characteristics to the forefront, or straight up add our own so he's more relatable to us.

So while I can't really help you pin down any specific Stiles, just know that there's not really a 'true' Stiles that anyone can confirm or deny. It's all just perception, so however you see him, go with it. Strengthen it. Explore it. I'm sure you'll find people who see what you do.

ALL GOOD QUESTIONS , all good questions . i’m gonna take it one at a time tho bc im a rambler hehe also before i begin --

tw : self harm , neglect , child abuse , ptsd , schizophrenia , parental loss , suicidal ideation

note : i’m only on ep 250 of shippuden so if anything revealed later is missing that’s why!

write about his childhood : so things were pretty bad . so bad , in fact , that it all started going downhill for him before he was even born . born of the fourth kazekage , rasa , & his wife , karura . gaara was selected to be the jinchuriki of shukaku ( the vessel of the one - tail demon ) & this alone did not bode well for his future . shukaku has a bloodlust that wishes to kill anyone & everyone , an ill - temper , & a narcissistic complex . gaara had to learn to adapt to having such a beast exist within him , trying his best to close his mind to him and failing. i hc that shukaku’s negative thoughts often invaded gaara’s mind , and him being so young , it affected him greatly despite never knowing anything different. karura died giving birth to him , so even as a newborn he was looked on with disdain , as if he were the cause of her passing . growing up , he harbored much guilt in that regard . like he had stolen his sibling’s mother away and his father’s wife . like it was all his fault . yashamaru , gaara’s uncle , was the only one who provided him with love . until the day he didn’t . gaara has had a hard time sleeping for as long as he can remember , & yashamaru caught him one night on his own & attempted to assassinate him . it was his mission given from rasa , gaara’s father . that was the night that every hope of ever being loved fled his being . yashamaru told him he never loved him , that he resented him for karura’s death , and that he was given the mission to kill him from his own father . gaara was ultimately , and utterly alone . even after trying to make friends , he scared everyone away simply by existing . he was bullied relentlessly despite his sand always keeping him from physical pain . the emotion damage was enough to live on with him for the rest of his life . even trying to help others , they all just assumed he was after them , that they were his next victim . eventually , he gave into their ideologies & became the monster everyone always viewed him as . he hated everyone . he had no love to give . no love to perceive . he was so lonely but he’d given up on being saved that night that he was betrayed . he gave into shukaku’s desires , no longer strong enough mentally to deny to him . he was tired . he was hurt . he killed anyone who wronged him in any way . he became the danger everyone feared . he was so full of rage and guilt and sorrow . he didn’t know any other way to live . he simply survived , coping in the only way he knew how ( or rather , that shukaku knew how ) . he was always a bit different from other kids . his expression never displayed his emotions well . he’d always dealt with the symptom called flat affect ( a lack of showing emotion characterized by an apathetic and unchanging facial expression and little or no change in the strength, tone, or pitch of the voice ) . this allowed children to easily believe the rumors that he was different enough from them to be afraid . he’s heard voices that aren’t his for as long as he can remember ( which is touched more upon in this hc ) and that only added to the idea that he doesn’t belong with these people . he can’t even feel their pain , the simplest form of being human . going as far as to try to harm himself to feel the way that they do and still failling . anyways

tl;dr it was really lonely and kinda fuckin awful

would he ever forgive his father ? hm . hmmmmm . not in any time when rasa is alive . i think he actually has so much pent up resentment toward him and how rasa used him , neglected him , tried to kill him , and fucked him over time and time again . i think his death would stir up many unpleasant emotions , not one having anything to do with forgiveness. i think upon learning what love feels like , he’d resent his father even more for never showing that to him . he believes he was nothing but a weapon to his father , and when they didn’t need his power , they’d dispose of him without a thought . truly , gaara doesn’t have the self confidence to pursue his life for himself , instead , he wishes to survive based solely on instinct . i’m sure he dealt with many moments of suicidal ideation , but that’s where it stopped , considering he couldn’t even give himself a papercut . ( thank you karura for keeping this boy alive ) . it was a continuous haunting thought however , intrusive and strong . rasa’s neglect was only the beginning of a long string of self neglect ( which i will write another headcanon on in the future as it’s in my drafts rn ) to the point that he has a hard time maintaining appropriate hygiene , eating habits , routine , etc . rasa is kinda where all of this traces back to . he’s had to unlearn all of these habits and learn to (and force himself to) do all of these simple mundane maintenance that everyone seems to think is so simple and normal . rasa did not raise him . gaara spent a long time trying to see him as his father , but something never clicked & something always hurt . now that he’s developed more into his own person , he can hardly view him as the father figure he always wanted to . rasa did not raise him . he did nothing but forsake him and his needs . still , gaara has a hard time hating him . there’s some sick twisted care for him somewhere in his heart , that yearns to forgive him , and maybe with 20+ more years of coping and learning how to love , he might be able to accept his past and offer not forgiveness for his father , but understanding that change and hope are possible .

what are his thoughts on shukaku ? WELL , he doesn’t have much care for shukaku at all . shukaku is another source of his past traumas , and i’ve yet to write this headcanon , but once shukaku was forcible removed from his vessel , gaara felt a peace he’s never known was even possible . i went over it a bit in the answer to the first part , but shukaku was the source of so much negativity . it’s said in the hc that goes over his hallucinations that shukaku’s voice was strong amidst everything else that would occur in gaara’s mind (but this wasn’t part of any disorder , it was simply shukaku speaking to him). i wish i knew more about shukaku with where i’m at in the story right now , but i imagine that gaara would forgive shukaku easier than he would his father . shukaku did not choose gaara as his vessel , he simply existed within him & despite making nights something horrific , he didn’t take a look at gaara and decide that he was not deserving of peace . gaara wasn’t special , and he knows that . anyone who would serve as shukaku’s vessel would go through the torture of his animosity. this doesn’t mean he likes shukaku by any means . but he doesn’t harbor quite the same strength of resentment as he does rasa. he’s glad he doesn’t have to deal with shukaku within him anymore.

was he ever jealous of his siblings ? simply put, yes. i haven’t seen much about kankuro or temari growing up so i can only go off of personal headcanons in which they were kept separate from gaara for their safety and offered more care from their peers and guardians. i dont suspect rasa was too much kinder in regards to his abuse and neglect toward them, but gaara would look at them and be jealous that at least the whole world didn’t hate them. they had a chance at happiness, while he was born into being hated. they also got to see their mom, at least for a few years. they spent time with her. i’m sure at some point growing up, gaara convinced himself that he hated them, despite them never really wronging him in any way. they weren’t around enough to love him, therefore it wasn’t fair. as he got older and they began to spend more time with each other, i think he’d grow jealous of the way that the two of them can interact with people. the three of them together do seem as unapproachable as ever, but gaara sees himself more unapproachable than both of them combined. he’s stoic and can be awkward, apathetic, and bad with words. he doesn’t make friends easily and most people don’t like him. he views them both as people who are reliable and communicative and even friendly when given the chance. i think he’s still jealous of some things about them, but the jealousy doesn’t come with any animosity. instead, he simply wishes he were more like them in a way that he admires them rather than admonishes them.

THE LAST (what a waste of time)

These are, from my point of view, some inconsistences I found from this movie. Not a proper analysis, just my thoughts.

I dont know where to start but first with Naruto.

I have seen all the Shippuden Movies, from 1 -Death of Naruto , to this one number 7. Almost in all these movies there was a princess or a girl who will be his "companion" across the events of the movie. We had Shion, Amaru, also the Snow princess- movie 1 from Part 1- and etc. In all of them, Naruto had chemistry with them. Not an amazing relationship since we have short time, an 1 hour and half, but there wasn't this akwardness and discomfort around the female co-protagonist.

With Hinata this happened. The Naruto we saw here, it's completely different from the person and shining boy we see until 479. I know, 2 years passed but in Shippuden 3 years passed , and we saw the transition from a kid naruto -12 yo.- to a 15/6 y.o. boy entering in adolescence. Two different evolutive stages, and yet he was the same shingin boy we know; of course he matured AND HE MATURED WITH SO MUCH MORE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE.

There are many fact wrong in this movie. First, across the whole thing he looks almost desolated, very quiet and akward. Coy, someone who doesnt know how to interact with hinata despite the fact that across all the manga, he never had problems to deal and talk with her.

Anyway, then we have Sakura insulting, because that what she did, him and saying that maybe "he doesnt know what love is" and Naruto also nods, to don't know what Love is. We are talking about the same Naruto, at age of 12, who made Zabuza Momochi cry

Then we have Sai, saying that when Naruto was whispering Hinata's name in dreams, Sai heard his sentimental spot, he didn't know Naruto had. And It was helping. Again, we are talking about the same naruto who said this to Sai

And I could quote many other scenes but this will be too long.

Then it takes just 30 minutes from the start of the movie to Naruto to "realize" with a epiphany of Jesus, that he ...loves hinata. What I see here is a glimpse of guilt tripping.

Other Inconsistence. they had to make Naruto fall in a Genjutsu -which theorically jinchuriki can not!- in order to let him realize Hinata was in love with him. Also, with the experience of Game of thrones ( i know, i know 2 totally different things but) but with the last shitty season they used the same resource that it was used here. Spit all the facts in your face, again and again just in case you dont forget that naruto HAS to fall in love with Hinata. Because we have this forced scenes between them all the damn time, at the expense of a Naruto totally ooc who can not interact properly with a mate that he knows since genin times. Also we have this recurrent scene from the academy Days, which was never shown on the manga, about some Iruka's class always repeating the quote "Whom would you spend your last day on earth?" Also, they made us recall a love confession that happened ALMOST 3 YEARS AGO, pain's arc, in which Naruto was absolutely indifferent about it until 699.

And it's not even that in these 2 years between movie and anime finale, that we see some approachment and more development between them (same with SS) because IS IN THE MOVIE, in this like 2/3 days that movie events takes place, where Naruto """realizes""" about Hinata's feelings. He literally just took days xD And it's inconsistent because with Sasuke he toook YEARS to set his true feelings AND EVEN THO when Sasuke asked him what A FRIEND means to him? He didn't know how to put that in words.

Following this logic, if a """friend""" took him all this time, i can imagine how it would be with the love of your life.

Also, worth to mention. All the Moon-symbolism stolen from Sasuke's figure. Across the last arc of manga we had a strong portrayal of how Naruto and Sasuke were Sun and Moon respectively.

And now some really random stuff that when i was watching this, i thought for a moment this was like Dragon ball.

-Why the fuck they had to fight ON THE SURFACE OF THE MOON? This was IDENTICAL to that episode from Power Rangers Red Forever where all the red rangers fight on the moon surface in order to defeat the bad guy.

I know this is fiction, and we are in fictional world. But naruto never went that far to talk about astronomical phenomena such as "THE MOON IS FALLING IN PIECES AND METHEORS ARE FALLING FROM THE SKY" and we.. We plan on destroying the moon.

Yes, I remember Tsukuyomi Infinite and stuff, but this is very different and came out SP asses.

In conclusion, I think i'm forgetting some things but anyway. This is a bad movie, what a surprise, not JUST because of the ship -i mean yes jeje- but because of all the inconsistences, the out of characterization, the rush on making naruto fall in love with hinata at expenses of some guilt, akwardness, and in 30 fucking minutes.

For being the only Naruto canon movie, it's very poor. I could quote Bonds #2 movie, Naruto's Death #1, Last Tower #4, even Road to ninja, as better material with better plots than this one.

okay!! so alex ( @gwyynbleidd ) is always a wonderful presence on my dashboard!! i love how they aren't afraid to show they are actively interested in their mutuals, just by how they'll spam memes. also they've got an eclectic section of muses- i've never seen a selection more varying in personality, but also backstory and like genre too?? also it's cool that many of them are connected to one another- really makes them feel more real!! also alex?? wonderful personality- super chill, fun, and funny to talk with via dash comm- i also very much appreciate their philosophy on writing... and they definitely practice what they preach!!

speaking of ppl who i first wrote with, i must talk about cyan ( @bloodxhound )!! ah, yes- the other one of two reasons i initially came back to tumblr rp!! first of all, ray!! i love the gruff detective man who bullies to show love :'D he's so much fun to interact with regardless of WHICH muse i pick...most of if not all of my muses at least know him to some capacity and somehow it is inevitable that ray will be bullying them to some capacity :D ( unless ur mana, mana has rights ). but cyan!! SO SWEET. SO NICE. GREAT WRITER AND ARTIST I WANNA STEAL IT- i'm really the lucky one here to be able to write and plot with her for all these years!! i can't wait to give her and ray more chaos ( or sweetness ) to mess with!!

i don't interact as much with leo ( @thereckoniing ) but what i do know is that he's really chill and supportive of his mutuals!! i appreciate the layers that taewon has to his personality and to his backstory and I can't wait to learn more about him- that and i actually really like the himbo energy that taewon exudes around like ray and mana?? great times truly!!

oh yeah!! jiwon's mun ( @interxstitial ) is also super sweet and encouraging just like their muse! we haven't gotten far into our thread yet but i already ADORE the friendship between jiwon and lamon developing...jiwon's sweetness definitely matches well so far with lam's prickliness :'D

on the note of plots and great dynamics tho- you know who's really fun to plot with? yeah that's right, alex ( @jeoseungsaja / @theimpalpable ) is a BLAST to both write and plot with!! and even though i'm throwing different muses at the same muse ( so far ), alex shows such techinque with characterizing saja in each verse that it still feels fresh each time?? reaper and calum- wow that's gonna hurt/be fun when they finally meet via erza. hyuk and patrick - YEAH THAT ALREADY GOT ME IN THE FEELS. but alex!! super sweet and patient- i definitely adore talking with them and i love how excited they get about characterizations and relationships and character development AND how supportive they are of their mutuals on dash!! it's so sweet to see and really just...comforting?? rp can feel a lil' isolating so it's always lovely to see someone who genuinely loves writing and characters for the sake of it!!

another person who's devoted to character development tho has to be lena ( @mythvoiced )!! although i haven't gotten the chance to write with her yet, i do appreciate how much thought she puts into each and every one of her characters so they feel distinct!! i also love the curiosity she shows towards her mutuals' ocs just in how she'll send them hc questions :D also she's super supportive of her mutuals and i love seeing her excitement in the tags- it makes me excited about rp too!! all in all, someone i definitely admire on my dash :D

Yes, there are things that did not sit really nicely with me: the obvious whitewashing, Omega being a clone of Jango (yes I was kinda expecting it but as I think through about it... makes less sense. Literally how?), but overall I enjoyed it.
