I have such perplexingly mixed feelings about hospitals.
In theory, a hospital or clinic is meant to be a place that you go when you are hurt, in order for somebody to heal you. In theory, it seems a place like that ought to be soothing, or comforting, or safe to some degree. Kind. Simple.
In reality, it’s actually such an incredible gamble on whether the medical professionals are going to make a problem better or worse. And the experience overall is certainly not a kind one. At least in my experience[s].
When I was a child with broken bones, the hospital staff WERE kind to me. They were very gentle in tone, even when they had to be rough in physical practice. They gave me a soft stuffed toy to squeeze and gently assured me that it would be over quickly when they had to pull my pins out without anaesthesia. They separated me from my abuser, ushering the person out of my room on the grounds that “This will be difficult to watch,” while then making it clear to me that they actually understood that this person was unkind to me, and they may not be able to do much about them for me without any proof, but they could at least offer me some temporary respite from them in the procedure and recovery rooms.
As I got older, I found that the kind way I remembered being treated in medical facilities apparently had an expiration date.
Now, after a lifetime of various afflictions and near-unending physical misery {...that medical professionals continually refuse to acknowledge and treat until something becomes imminently life-threatening}, my pain tolerance is very high. I will go into the emergency department calmly complaining of a suspicion that a large cyst is impeding my circulation somewhere, or a suspicion that I have lost too much blood again and perhaps need an emergency infusion of some kind before my heart stops due to low potassium levels {as it has nearly done multiple times in the past} or some similar deficiency, or a suspicion that I have broken or dislocated another bone, or that I am simply in so much pain that I am struggling not to faint again for whatever reason, and I am met with everything but kindness and patience. I am, almost invariably, met with rudeness, callousness, and skepticism, sometimes even outright being angrily accused of drug-seeking and wasting the staff’s valuable time...until my lab work comes back, and everyone suddenly panics at the realization that perhaps I actually do have a bit of a medical emergency here.
And even the realization that I was never lying, that I was more than justified in seeking urgent medical attention that I might very well have died without, does not necessarily cause anyone to speak more kindly or treat me less roughly. In fact, it is often outright emphasized to me that it must be my own fault that I am in bad shape, due to my weight. {I am not overweight, mind you - I have indeed heard all about how being visibly heavier will get everything from broken bones to cancer blamed on “Just needing to lose some weight,” it is positively horrific - I am severely underweight.} I am accused of anorexia. I have even been involuntarily committed to a psych ward, on the grounds of being a “suicide/self-harm risk” due to the incorrect diagnosis of anorexia nervosa. It is written prominently in my medical records that I starve myself intentionally and lie about it in order to continue doing it. I have not been able to get this incorrect information amended. In actuality, I have a genetic illness, on top of chronic severe abdominal pain due to various conditions {constantly causing things like recurring ulcers/lesions, kidney stones, and cysts}, on top of limited mobility due to this pain simply making it a monumental chore to acquire groceries, that eating anything {and keeping it down} is extraordinarily difficult and hideously painful.
No testing for my oddball genetic condition {that is in several family members’ medical records, that I can produce} is ever done, and I am never believed about my levels of pain and nausea. I have had several doctors quite bluntly refuse to perform any further tests on me, because “I should be ashamed of wasting the staff’s time like this” by “making myself sick intentionally.” The attitude is, nearly universally, “I will keep you alive because that is my job, but that is it. I will verbally berate and admonish you heavily the entire time, because I believe you are a drug-seeker, and/or an attention-seeker.”
I am a respite-seeker. I come to you with various pains and ailments and expect you to ease them somehow, because I can no longer handle it myself! Fixing that is indeed your job! Am I being too quiet, too polite, and that is why you are so comfortable pushing me around? I seem “too content” to be in emergency care? That is called trust, and it is amazing that I have not completely lost it for you damn quacks yet.
#I cannot perform pain when I am on the verge of unconsciousness. I can barely string my sentences together. It takes effort just to speak.#Of course I am quiet and not screaming hysterically. Do you realize I have gone into shock just like this before?#I am in so much pain that I am too overwhelmed to do much more than sit catatonically and stare at a wall as I try to keep myself awake.#.:Mine:.#.abt#I am chronically ill. I would like the kindness back.#I crave the kindness and reassurance I remember being shown to the broken child#I remember how sweetly the child was allowed to pick out the colour of their own cast {pink; of course} and how the nurse obliged to sign it#It was shocking to me to realize that basic decency and sympathy were reserved only for children#I was unprepared for the guaranteed verbal nastiness I get now#Only crying abused children get sympathy. Worn-out adults get quite shockingly cruel scorn and verbal lashings.#If somebody is miserable is it not the least you can do to just be NICE to them? Even a little bit? Anything but so very rude and shaming?#This is not unique to me by any means. Why is pain no longer acceptable as an adult? Why am I just expected to control myself better?#I cannot tell my organs to simply not be covered in lesions and cysts you know.#I cannot tell my immune system that not everything I attempt to eat is poison.#''Don't be ashamed to ask for help!'' ''...Why aren't you more ashamed of asking for help? Seems attention-seeking. Toughen up.''

I have a constant feeling of exhaustion and boredom. This situation affects my prayers negatively. What could be the reason or reasons for them and what would you advise me to do as a solution?
Unlike bodily disorders, the causes of spiritual distress may not be the same in everyone. They can be different for each person; it can vary from person to person.
For example, the cause of diseases such as diabetes, kidney failure and cancer can be the same or similar for everyone in general while boredom, “world-weariness” and depression, etc. can vary from person to person. For, any spiritual distress is closely related to the person's age, gender, profession, marital status, personality structure, education, financial condition, faith, childhood, traumatic events he underwent and family structure.
In addition, whether this feeling, which you describe as "boredom" and "exhaustion”, occurs all the time or from time to time changes many things in terms of diagnosis.
Therefore, it is not possible to tell the exact cause of this state of boredom that you feel without knowing you closely. In this case, it is also difficult to give a specific prescription.
However, we will focus on possible general causes and suggestions for solutions to the feelings of boredom and exhaustion that people can sometimes feel. Insallah, it will be useful to you as well.
The main causes of boredom
By nature, man is a being equipped with very sensitive faculties and emotions.
Also “By nature man is extremely weak, yet everything touches him, and saddens and grieves him. Also he is utterly lacking in power, yet the calamities and enemies that afflict him are extremely numerous. Also he is extremely wanting, yet his needs are indeed many. Also he is lazy and incapable, yet life’s responsibilities are most burdensome. Also his humanity has connected him to the rest of the universe, yet the decline and disappearance of the things he loves and with which he is familiar continually pains him. Also his reason shows him exalted aims and lasting fruits, yet his hand is short, his life brief, his power slight, and his patience little.”
Thus, the struggle of a weak human being with the life of the world sometimes consumes his energy in terms of spirit and physique. The person feels emotionally and physically that he or she is experiencing a burnout syndrome; his or her interest in working, traveling and other blessings of life diminishes, and he or she loses his or her motivation.
Along with his weakness, man is also a very sensitive being.
Because of this sensitivity, man is very concerned with his environment and events; and this can cause him to feel spiritually tired and exhausted. People who are particularly sensitive and compassionate sometimes feel compelled to grapple with material and spiritual problems more than usual or try to help everyone's problems. During this process, they naturally become tired and exhausted.
In addition, man is a social being.
His creator coded him in a way to live with someone from the opposite gender in the community, to share life and every beauty together. Therefore, people who are single, divorced or separated, or those whose spouses have died may also experience boredom and inability to enjoy life.
For people who do not believe in Allah and the Day of Judgement or who have a weak faith, life and living are meaningless. For them, life has no meaning after a certain point of satisfaction. Thus, life that is meaningless gives people boredom and exhaustion.
For these reasons and similar ones, if no solution to the problem of boredom and exhaustion is found, emotions become chronic and permanent. In this case, indifference to events, boredom and escaping from people begin. It also becomes difficult for a person to act to change their condition. The person who is in this mood becomes skeptical of himself and assumes attitudes and thoughts that will evaluate him negatively.
Remedies and solutions
For the solution, first of all, it is important for the person to make sense of the spiritual situation in a spiritual point of view and to look at life through a new perspective.
In addition, it is beneficial for him to be included in religious, cultural and social activities that will add meaning to his life as they add new excitements and color to life.
In addition, he or she needs to rest a bit and get rid of her responsibilities and spiritual burdens.
To give emotions and thoughts a suitable direction appropriate for creation and to eb able transforming the distress into an opportunity for the purpose of life
As long as it is not continuous, the state of boredom experienced in a certain period of life is actually something that can happen to everybody. For, a person has a very rich treasure of feelings but Allah has not limited these feelings. Since man is not a robot, he cannot fix his emotions. Besides, since he is in the world of testing, he can be blown to the left and right with the whispers of the soul and the devil.
Whatever the reason, when feelings are experienced at the extreme level, it can also cause a variety of spiritual problems by capturing the mind from time to time and enslaving the person. However, Allah has drawn the framework of being a peaceful person by introducing certain measures about how much to be happy and sad or to love, and to get angry for what. The way to achieve this is to train the feelings as He showed them and turn them into behavior in a nice way.
In the same way, man, who is created to maintain the moderate way in everything, finds peace by directing his thoughts and feelings in the face of events and phenomena that seem negative about him and his environment.
To do this, it is necessary to look at the misfortunes and troubles through the window of destiny. For, as the world is not unattended, the events that happen to man and his close environment are not the events that happen without wisdom, without reason, and by chance. The duty of a believer is to see the trace, mercy, affection, compassion and justice of fate behind the events and to show patience.
A calamity that happens to a person is to make him think and repent of his own mistake and sin, and to try to be closer to Allah, his Creator.
For this reason, even if some problems seemingly aggravate the burden of life, it is actually an opportunity to gain eternal life, to be closer to Him, and to gain his consent. For, in such times, the desire of man toward the pleasures and sins of the world decreases; thus, he remains in a purer state spiritually. That makes him close to Allah.
The story of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him) is a good example of it. The people of Nineveh did not obey him and left him alone; those on the ship that he embarked regarded him as sinful and threw him into the sea, and the fish swallowed him. In other words, he was both abandoned, thrown and swallowed, just as the events swallow us in our lives, people leave us alone, and our soul throws us into the sea of sin. However, this event is also the salvation of Prophet Yunus (Jonah). He prayed to Allah with complete surrender because he felt his incapability, weakness and impotence. Allah accepted his prayer and took him to the shore safely, and gave mercy and faith to the hearts of the people of Nineveh and guided them.
As it is seen, although the story of Yunus seems like a distressing and boring event at first glance, it turns into beauties about him, leading to mercy and compassion. Our task is to make an effort to use this opportunity as a better occasion through prayers and taking refuge in Allah.
The remorse that is felt after sins and big mistakes should not turn into a punishment for the person.
Another point to note here is as follows:
People feel severely guilty when they commit a sin or make a big mistake. They want to relax their conscience by punishing themselves with the guidance of the subconscious. This punishment can sometimes be in the form of condemning themselves to unhappiness, sometimes in the form of turning away from the blessings of life.
In short, the boredom that one feels may also be a punishment that he or she has inflicted on himself or herself.
However, the punishment that the person will impose on himself will not cause his sin to be forgiven in any way because it is only Allah who forgives sins. The feeling of regret and conscientious discomfort given to man in the face of sins is an invitation sent by Allah to the servants, an invitation to be close to him and take refuge in Him. After seeing his own fault and deficiency related to sins and mistakes, that is, after taking some responsibility, looking at the share of fate for the rest and trying to be closer to Allah will comfort the person much better.
Carl Gustav Jung, who is a healthy and religious psychiatrist, says: “The happiest moments in my life are the moments of contact with my inner world.” That is, my penitence, my repentance and seeking refuge in Allah.
It is normal and perhaps good that the pleasures taken from worship are reduced at this stage.
It is normal that the pleasures taken from worship are reduced at this stage because there is a freezing of emotions here; they need time to open up and warm up.
In addition, it should not be forgotten that not takin pleasure from worship, even if it is spiritual, is more suitable for sincerity because the pleasures of worship serve as encouragement for the soul. Therefore, some Islamic scholars considered the pleasures taken from worship as risky.
The important thing is that you do not allow Satan to take advantage of this situation and to make you suffer from delusions. Indeed, some of the saints of Allah experienced the state of freezing of these feelings called “spiritual constipation” from time to time, and patiently sought refuge in Allah much more.
To make our life meaningful by thinking of the purpose of life and turning every situation we encounter into profit.
One reason that bothers modern man and makes him feel tired of life is that he cannot fully realize the meaning of life. According to him, the purpose of being in this world is only to enjoy the beauties and pleasures of world life. It makes no sense to live when the person cannot have them for various reasons because if he is here to enjoy and have fun, there is no point in living without them. This thought makes him feel tired of life.
What a believer has to do about it is to question the purpose of his life again.
This purpose is doing things that will gain man the consent of Allah and to strive to be a perfect person as the Qur'an shows. The state of boredom and exhaustion is a test suitable for this purpose and is an occasion to gain His consent.
If the person is fully aware of this purpose, no hardness in the world will break his enthusiasm; on the contrary, he will endeavor to earn his eternal life with greater effort.
Such a person knows that nothing he has done will be wasted, and he will receive the reward in the hereafter. When life becomes a field of the hereafter for him then, he will look for ways to turn every form into an opportunity and send more supplies to his or her hereafter.
That is when life, its misfortunes, beauties, in short, everything will be more meaningful. What is meaningful does not make people bored ...
In this context, if your work seems monotonous or boring, it is normal to give you boredom because they do not mean much to you. To overcome this, if it is not possible to change your job, it is possible to solve this problem with manual skills, new professions and occupations by participating in various personal development courses that will make sense to you.
Again, in this context, you can make your life even more meaningful by working with social aid organizations, helping students and the poor, giving people good and useful information, and focusing on your prayers.
When you turn back and look back on such a day, it will make you more peaceful to see your mortal life pass in a profitable way for the Hereafter.
During the day, do your best to have friendly chats and conversations with family members or friends. Chatting with close friends is among the things that relax the soul and gives dynamism.
Play sports. What people give up first when they are busy is sports whereas regular sports make it easier to deal with stress. Even when you take a short walk, you will immediately see the benefits; the next day your body will be more fit and your soul will relax.

[hyper]tension
There are so many things I could be writing about right now.
I’ve chosen to stick with one of the things I know best for this post.
Did you guess “body image issues and the problem of narrowly defining the concept of health?”
If so: a cookie for you!
Tumblr media
A handful of pictures popped up in my Timehop from 12 whole years ago that gave me pause the other day.
Sometimes when I see older pictures of myself I am overwhelmed by how different I look now... in a bad way. I see myself in those pictures as thin and beautiful and I see myself now as a sausage monster stuffed into bike shorts.
The more I sit with and work on my body image issues, the more I have noticed healthier thinking habits developing. Let me be clear, this has been an incredibly slow process. But seeing those changes is something I am really encouraged by... and it makes the every day body image fight have some measurable value.
I can say with confidence that, at 200 pounds, my body image is currently the best it has ever been.
That has nothing to do with the specific number on the scale and everything to do with working really hard over a lot of years to understand that neither “beauty” or “health” are inherently defined as “thin.” A fundamental pillar of that understanding is that you cannot separate mental health from the concept of general health.
Mainstream culture does this.
Mainstream culture wants you to believe that it’s your weight or your BMI that determines whether or not you are healthy.
That is bullshit.
Here are the pictures of me from 12 years ago. We were moving my high school boyfriend into his freshman dorm for his first year of college. I don’t think any of the people in these photos will mind me sharing them in the context of this blog post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am *THIN* in these pictures.
I am 17.
Apart from a very clear warning sign that I was already developing horrible posture, I noticed a couple of things right away about these pictures when I was looking at them the other day.
My shirt is a size small or extra small.
I am holding my arm across my stomach in the fourth picture because I do not think I am *thin enough* to be wearing that shirt.
I may have been a thin 17-year-old. But I was not healthy.
I was physically fit.
I played soccer for three out of four seasons of the year.
But I was not healthy.
I know I wasn’t healthy because I was about to embark on my senior year of high school during which I would, at times, only allow myself one and a half meals per day. Sometimes that one meal would be pasta. Other times that one meal would be a bag of dark chocolate peanut M&Ms and a Mountain Dew. Other times it would be a gallon of strawberries. Other times it would be a family pack of Twizzlers.
My body in those pictures might look healthy.
But appearance is not an appropriate indicator of health.
The two times in my adult life that I have been the thinnest have also been the times in my life where I have struggled the most with body image and disordered eating.
After I escaped the abusive relationship of my freshman year of college, I gained around 20 pounds.
The following summer, I exercised for an hour every day and ate only pickles and Greek yogurt (separately, of course, don’t be gross).
I lost 30 pounds.
That was also not healthy.
Fast forward a handful of years to 2015.
I start an anti-depressant.
Over the course of the next two years I gain around 50 pounds.
Today, in the spirit of full disclosure (and because the numbers don’t mean shit), my weight fluctuates between 190 and 200.
I am obese.
A mathematical algorithm used to determine BMI has labeled me “obese.”
My clothing sizes vary day to day thanks to IBS-related bloating but I’m somewhere around a 14-16.
Do you know the cut-off for plus sizes?
It’s 14.
So, I am an obese, plus-sized woman.
The numbers aren’t very polite, are they?
Within the last two years I was diagnosed with severe iron-deficiency anemia.
I committed to correcting that with a number of lifestyle changes including taking supplements and adding iron-heavy foods to my diet. I took Vitamin C to boost my absorption. On days I took the supplement I had no coffee, no tea, no dairy, and no acid-reducer meds. In 6 very committed months, I resolved my iron issues, for the most part. We have since learned that the daily stomach medicine I take may be affecting my iron absorption so, although I am no longer taking supplements, I am taking a daily vitamin to help maintain a healthy level of iron.
That story is about health.
I had a health issue and I developed a strategy to resolve the issue, being sure to consider my mental health as well.
I have worked really, really hard to consider my HEALTH instead of my WEIGHT.
This obese, plus-sized woman exercises for around an hour every day. She does not drink alcohol or soda. She is aware of what she eats and is careful to eat when she’s hungry and stop when she’s full.
One of the ways I know my thinking is healthier is that when I look at bathing suits on Target’s website, I have started to consider their plus-sized models “normal.”
The average size of an American woman based on the most recent data is between sizes 18 and 20.
I spent over twenty years unable to see an average-sized woman as beautiful.
Even though the clothing industry has labeled me “plus-sized,” if anything, I am “slightly less than average-sized.”
In this post, I’m sure my thinking seems sort of piece-meal and disconnected.
In my head, thin-ness and health and body image and eating and exercise and cultural interpretations of beauty are all smashed into one big Frankenstein’s creation.
For a long, long time I did not consider plus-sized or average-sized women to be beautiful solely because they were not thin.
When I was thin (and not healthy), I know that I considered people of that size, the average size, to be unhealthy.
I am at a point in my life where my habits are the healthiest they have been and my mental health regarding my body image is also the healthiest it has been.
And I weigh 200 pounds.
You cannot look at a person and have any idea how healthy they are.
You cannot look at a BMI or a number on a scale and judge a person’s health accordingly.
I have worked with people who are suicidal who are thin and people who are suicidal who are not thin.
Health cannot be separated from mental health.
Can you be too thin? Absolutely. Your body needs a certain amount of fat and muscle to function properly. Can you be too big? Absolutely. Risks for all kinds of delightfully chronic and fatal conditions increase with weight gain.
Can you be big and be healthy? Yes.
I know because I am those things.
If you exercise, if you are aware of what you eat and are careful to not over-eat, if you get the vitamins you need, if you prioritize balancing mental health and physical health, if you get enough sleep, “healthy” is within reach for everyone.
If I ever write a book, it will be about balancing mental health and physical health. Because for basically my entire adult life, I’ve focused on one or the other and that does not work. I promise that if I do write a book, it’ll be better organized than this zig-zaggy blog post.
We have to push back against the cultural tendency to keep mental health separate from our definitions of general health.
We have to push back against the cultural tendency to define health by how a person looks.
You are not “healthy” if you are not physically healthy.
But you are also not “healthy” if you are not mentally healthy.
And sometimes, especially if you have a tendency toward body dysmorphia or disordered eating, the healthiest option is not to focus on weight loss or buy into a fad diet plan.
I am not trying to lose weight.
I am trying to be healthy.
And, you could argue, I’m not trying to lose weight BECAUSE I am trying to be healthy.
Trying to lose weight feeds mental illness for me. And that is not healthy.
This blog post is brought to you by a lot of years of working really hard to understand myself. My specific approach to managing my health may not work for you, but I challenge anyone reading this to take a moment and think about whether or not you are giving balanced consideration to physical and mental health. Because, even if our specific situations are different, balancing mental and physical health is the only path to being healthy. For me, for you, for everyone.
This blog post is also brought to you by a new health hurdle that has been laid in my lap over the past few weeks.
I have high blood pressure.
Chronic hypertension runs in my family, so I have a predisposition for high blood pressure. I have not been aware of having it at all in the past but thanks to my mom’s new blood pressure machine, I am aware of it now.
Learning that I have high blood pressure instigated a bit of a breakdown.
For a lot of the reasons I have already mentioned.
I’m working really hard to be healthy by balancing my mental and physical health. So why, if both those things are headed in the right direction, does my body not seem to agree?
Well, genetics will do that.
In the name of health, I scheduled an appointment with my doctor. We talked about the typical “lifestyle changes” that would be recommended for someone my age with high blood pressure.
I am already doing all of them.
There are things I cannot control, however, that are affecting my mental health right now. I am carrying a lot of stress about the upcoming election. I am carrying a lot of stress about Black people being disproportionately arrested, charged, jailed, and killed by police as part of a system of oppression that I would very much like to have a part in dismantling. I am carrying a lot of stress about the pandemic that has killed 170,000 Americans. I have spent 7-8 years learning how to manage my stress. Those tools were not intended to work in situations like this.
So, my doctor and I made a plan to monitor my blood pressure, to try do more meditation and progressive relaxation, to eliminate processed snacks from my everyday diet (on occasion is still allowed), and to start doing some basic weight exercises with my cardio.
Blood pressure is a really good example of why a healthy approach requires balancing mental and physical health.
I’ve checked the physical health boxes for blood pressure management.
And things beyond my control are preventing me from checking the mental health boxes for blood pressure management.
And also, genetics.
With the help of my doctor, I’ve developed a plan that considers both my physical and mental health and only time will tell if that has an impact on my blood pressure. For what it’s worth, my doctor is optimistic. Part of the reason my doctor is optimistic is because I am healthy.
To clarify, being healthy does not mean that my IBS has gone away, it just means I am treating my IBS with diet and medicine.
Being healthy does not mean my anxiety has gone away, it just means I am in control of my anxiety.
I would not be healthy if I was unable to manage my IBS.
But I would also not be healthy if I was unable to manage my anxiety.
I would not be healthy if I had not figured out the value of balancing physical and mental health.
Just like I found a way to overcome my iron-deficiency anemia, I will find a way to overcome my high blood pressure. It may require new medication and lifestyle changes, but by giving adequate consideration to both my physical and mental health, I have no doubt that I will eventually find a healthy solution to push myself over this hurdle as well.
Gonna wrap this up with a poor quality mirror-selfie I took this morning when I tried on a new bathing suit. This is a (headless) picture of a 200-pound, obese, plus-sized, healthy person.

ENNEAGRAM .
LINK. GO HERE AFTER COMPLETING. Feel free to shorten your results!
Type 4, THE INDIVIDUALIST
The Sensitive, Introspective Type: Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental
Type Four in Brief
Fours are self-aware, sensitive, and reserved. They are emotionally honest, creative, and personal, but can also be moody and self-conscious. Withholding themselves from others due to feeling vulnerable and defective, they can also feel disdainful and exempt from ordinary ways of living. They typically have problems with melancholy, self-indulgence, and self-pity. At their Best: inspired and highly creative, they are able to renew themselves and transform their experiences.
Basic Fear: That they have no identity or personal significance
Basic Desire: To find themselves and their significance (to create an   identity)
Enneagram Four with a Five-Wing: "The Bohemian"
Key Motivations: Want to express themselves and their individuality, to create and surround themselves with beauty, to maintain certain moods and feelings, to withdraw to protect their self-image, to take care of emotional needs before attending to anything else, to attract a "rescuer."
When moving in their Direction of Disintegration (stress), aloof Fours suddenly become over-involved and clinging at Two. However, when moving in their Direction of Integration (growth), envious, emotionally turbulent Fours become more objective and principled, like healthy Ones.
Type Four Overview
We have named this type The Individualist because Fours maintain their identity by seeing themselves as fundamentally different from others. Fours feel that they are unlike other human beings, and consequently, that no one can understand them or love them adequately. They often see themselves as uniquely talented, possessing special, one-of-a-kind gifts, but also as uniquely disadvantaged or flawed. More than any other type, Fours are acutely aware of and focused on their personal differences and deficiencies.
Healthy Fours are honest with themselves: they own all of their feelings and can look at their motives, contradictions, and emotional conflicts without denying or whitewashing them. They may not necessarily like what they discover, but they do not try to rationalize their states, nor do they try to hide them from themselves or others. They are not afraid to see themselves “warts and all.” Healthy Fours are willing to reveal highly personal and potentially shameful things about themselves because they are determined to understand the truth of their experience—so that they can discover who they are and come to terms with their emotional history. This ability also enables Fours to endure suffering with a quiet strength. Their familiarity with their own darker nature makes it easier for them to process painful experiences that might overwhelm other types.
Nevertheless, Fours often report that they feel they are missing something in themselves, although they may have difficulty identifying exactly what that “something” is. Is it will power? Social ease? Self-confidence? Emotional tranquility?—all of which they see in others, seemingly in abundance. Given time and sufficient perspective, Fours generally recognize that they are unsure about aspects of their self-image—their personality or ego-structure itself. They feel that they lack a clear and stable identity, particularly a social persona that they feel comfortable with.
While it is true that Fours often feel different from others, they do not really want to be alone. They may feel socially awkward or self-conscious, but they deeply wish to connect with people who understand them and their feelings. The “romantics” of the Enneagram, they long for someone to come into their lives and appreciate the secret self that they have privately nurtured and hidden from the world. If, over time, such validation remains out of reach, Fours begin to build their identity around how unlike everyone else they are. The outsider therefore comforts herself by becoming an insistent individualist: everything must be done on her own, in her own way, on her own terms. Fours’ mantra becomes “I am myself. Nobody understands me. I am different and special,” while they secretly wish they could enjoy the easiness and confidence that others seem to enjoy.
Fours typically have problems with a negative self-image and chronically low self-esteem. They attempt to compensate for this by cultivating a Fantasy Self—an idealized self-image which is built up primarily in their imaginations. A Four we know shared with us that he spent most of his spare time listening to classical music while fantasizing about being a great concert pianist—à la Vladimir Horowitz. Unfortunately, his commitment to practicing fell far short of his fantasized self-image, and he was often embarrassed when people asked him to play for them. His actual abilities, while not poor, became sources of shame.
In the course of their lives, Fours may try several different identities on for size, basing them on styles, preferences, or qualities they find attractive in others. But underneath the surface, they still feel uncertain about who they really are. The problem is that they base their identity largely on their feelings. When Fours look inward they see a kaleidoscopic, ever-shifting pattern of emotional reactions. Indeed, Fours accurately perceive a truth about human nature—that it is dynamic and ever changing. But because they want to create a stable, reliable identity from their emotions, they attempt to cultivate only certain feelings while rejecting others. Some feelings are seen as “me,” while others are “not me.” By attempting to hold on to specific moods and express others, Fours believe that they are being true to themselves.
One of the biggest challenges Fours face is learning to let go of feelings from the past; they tend to nurse wounds and hold onto negative feelings about those who have hurt them. Indeed, Fours can become so attached to longing and disappointment that they are unable to recognize the many treasures in their lives.
Leigh is a working mother who has struggled with these difficult feelings for many years.
“I collapse when I am out in the world. I have had a trail of relationship disasters. I have hated my sister’s goodness—and hated goodness in general. I went years without joy in my life, just pretending to smile because real smiles would not come to me. I have had a constant longing for whatever I cannot have. My longings can never become fulfilled because I now realize that I am attached to ‘the longing’ and not to any specific end result.”
There is a Sufi story that relates to this about an old dog that had been badly abused and was near starvation. One day, the dog found a bone, carried it to a safe spot, and started gnawing away. The dog was so hungry that it chewed on the bone for a long time and got every last bit of nourishment that it could out of it. After some time, a kind old man noticed the dog and its pathetic scrap and began quietly setting food out for it. But the poor hound was so attached to its bone that it refused to let go of it and soon starved to death.
Fours are in the same predicament. As long as they believe that there is something fundamentally wrong with them, they cannot allow themselves to experience or enjoy their many good qualities. To acknowledge their good qualities would be to lose their sense of identity (as a suffering victim) and to be without a relatively consistent personal identity (their Basic Fear). Fours grow by learning to see that much of their story is not true—or at least it is not true any more. The old feelings begin to fall away once they stop telling themselves their old tale: it is irrelevant to who they are right now.

Insight on Enneagram Type 4
Excerpts from: The Enneagram Institute
THE INDIVIDUALIST Enneagram Type Four
The Sensitive, Introspective Type:
Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and Temperamental
Tumblr media
Enneagram Four with a Three-Wing: "The Aristocrat"
Enneagram Four with a Five-Wing: "The Bohemian"
Key Motivations: Want to express themselves and their individuality, to create and surround themselves with beauty, to maintain certain moods and feelings, to withdraw to protect their self-image, to take care of emotional needs before attending to anything else, to attract a "rescuer."
The Meaning of the Arrows (in brief)
When moving in their Direction of Disintegration (stress), aloof Fours suddenly become over-involved and clinging at Two. However, when moving in their Direction of Integration (growth), envious, emotionally turbulent Fours become more objective and principled, like healthy Ones. Learn more about the arrows.
Type Four Overview
We have named this type “The Individualist” because Fours maintain their identity by seeing themselves as fundamentally different from others.

They don't always know how to become tense, anxious and, perhaps, a bit because the energy force. It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction technique. This calm lasted a whole is not considered necessary. This warmth can be a perfect choice for reiki energy. This is the pinnacle for those who prefer the facts.
What Is Reiki Jin Kei Do
By the time to investigate, study and move up in the world. Before Reiki, I ask my guides to connect to the art or craft of reiki, the level 2 training consists of participants with the allopathic medicine approach. That is very closely aligned with yourself. The other two giving them Reiki, I ask my guides to aid practitioners in the area.As you give this healing, you must carry on reading this right understanding of the patient as ease as some type of reiki takes about one day all teachers will also be acceptable.
All we know it is not addressed, no amount of time, this simple technique to help heal people, animals, trees, grass, flowers, water, etc. Anything that is alive has Life Force Energy that massages the person is in us.Not because we cannot use Reiki to others. The attunement process is not a healing method that it feels stable. The Solar plexus Chakra was also able to do with learning to release your chakrasThis is great to have subsided slightly after treatment....

An Easy Guide to Chakra Meditation Benefits
Of all the creatures on earth, only human beings can change the pattern of their behavior. Man alone is the architect of his destiny . . . Human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.
William James
What are the Chakras?
Our physical body is not the only body we have. We have an energy body as well. We all know that everything on the cellular or atomic level is energy. Our energy body extends beyond the physical body creating layers of energies named the aura. Our aura communicates with our physical body and our chakras.
Chakras are organizational centers for the reception, assimilation, and transmission of life-force energy. They are the stepping-stones between heaven and earth. Our chakras absorbs energies from the outside (environment- the Universe) into our aura and then to our body. Our chakras connect and support our physical and energy bodies.
There are mainly seven chakras in our body as well as some small chakras around our body. Every chakra has specific responsibilities of the proper functioning or dysfunctioning of glands and organs as well as mental, emotional or spiritual matters.
What about animals and plants?
All living beings from animals to plants, tress and the Earth have chakras.
Chakra & Manifestation
Blocks in the chakras can take many forms. A chakra may be deficient in its functioning, meaning there is a constriction that results in too little energy flowing in and out of that chakra, or it may be excessive, meaning there is too much energy flowing. The goal of chakra meditation is to balance the energy flow through each chakra and through your whole mind-body-energy system.
Blocks in the chakras impede your ability to manifest because they impede the flow of energy. To manifest anything, you need all of your energies available and flowing. Trying to bring a dream to reality with a blocked chakra is like trying to paint a masterpiece without having one of the major colors of paint.

What is Chakra meditation?
Chakra meditation is a very powerful practice known to the Indian seers for over five thousand years. This practice basically involves concentration on the various chakras of our energy centers in the psychic body. Activation of these chakras would mean opening up various doors of your consciousness thereby taking you to a very divine state of existence.
You should sit comfortably with straight spine with your index fingers gently touching the thumbs placing both your palms facing skywards on your laps. Close your eyes deeply inhale and exhale, relax yourself completely. Wait for the chanting to begin and as you listen to the name of the chakra, you could visualize that chakra before your eyes or just concentrate on that spot in the body which will be mentioned periodically.
As you listen to the mantra (Video at the bottom) being chanted, you too could chant the same inwards or just silently focus on that chakra. When “Kundalini aruhanam” is chanted visualize a bright golden fluid flooding the chakra and turning it bright golden color. This practice must not be performed in the lying down posture.
I learned chakra meditation when I was introduced to one of my spiritual teachers “Tuba K. Aksu”. We did a specific chakra meditation process named “Chakra Dhyana”. This meditation was applied by Oneness university in India. This chakra meditation is powerful and I’ll include a link to it at the end of this page to do the practice on your own.
It is an easy process. All you need to do is follow the instructions as to focus on each chakra, then see each one flooded by a golden color that’ it. Any moment you feel you are thinking about something else other than the meditation, just simply bring your attention back to the audio and carry on.
Sound of Chakra Meditation
The sound the instructor (Beloved Sri Krishnaraj) says correlates to each chakra. Each sound is the Chakra’s own tone.

The Main Seven Chakras
This Chakra meditation is a gift
“First say to yourself what you would be, and then do what you have to do.”
Epictetus
Here’s a piece of advice before you do this chakra meditation. Declare an intention and commit to doing it regularly to reap the highest benefits. Put the full weight of your commitment behind it. This magical process will work invisibly in the background of your life.
But when you have conflicting intentions or beliefs, the process gets bewildered. This way your signal to the universe will be confusing. The universe doesn’t know what you want, so it gives you a little of this and a little bit of that.
When you discard the confusions and hold only one clear intention with no resistance, fear, or doubt, then that invisible force can work in the background to help you create what you intend. This exercise will enable you to clear the conflicts out of the way and open the path so your intention can flourish and manifest.
Benefits of Chakra meditation:
Balancing the chakras during chakra meditation has many positive attributes:
1 Nourishing the organs and glands of the physical and metaphysical body
2 Having feelings of prosperity, well-being, trust, good physical health and satisfaction
3 You will feel peace, higher confidence and security

5 You will feel that you are in control of your life, strength of will power, have a clear purpose and become more affectionate towards life and others
6 You will be compassionate, loving, caring. It will enable you to give and receive pure love
7 You will become more aware about the people and circumstances around you. You will also feel more creative.

9 You will feel bliss in your life and extreme satisfaction. Experience a deeper understanding of the state of consciousness
Now, let me take every chakra and give you some information about their functionalities:
Chakra One (Muladhara):
Tumblr media
Located at the base of the spine, is associated with survival. Its element is earth. This chakra is there for stability, physical health, trust, and obtaining prosperity. This chakra becomes activated during the period when you were in the womb until the first year of age.
Chakra Two (Svadhishtana):
Tumblr media
Located in the lower abdomen is associated with healthy emotions, pleasure, and sexuality. Its element is water. This chakra becomes activated during babies 6 months to the age of two.
Chakra Three (Manipura):
Tumblr media
Located in the solar plexus, is associated with personal power, will, and self-esteem. Its element is fire. It is where act on things in life. This chakra becomes activated during the 18th month of a baby until age four.
Chakra Four(anahata):
Tumblr media
Located over the sternum around the heart area, is associated with love and relationships. It’s element is air. It is there for balance in life, compassion, self-acceptance, and having healthy relationships with others. This chakra becomes activated between the ages four and eight
Chakra Five(Vishuddhi):
Tumblr media
Located in the throat, is associated with clear communication, resonance, and creativity. It is there to speak your truth and to be heard. Its element is sound. This chakra becomes activated between the ages of seven, eight, and thirteen.
Chakra Six(Ajna):
Tumblr media
Located in the center of the forehead, is associated with clairvoyance, intuition, seeing through chaos and imagination. Its element is light. This is where a person sees the unseen by the usual eyes. Seeing through life. This chakra becomes activated during the adolescent years.
Chakra Seven(Sahasrara):
Tumblr media
Located at the top of the head, the cerebral cortex, and is associated with awareness, knowledge, understanding, spiritual connection, and transcendent consciousness. It’s the place of knowing without seeing. Its element is thought. This chakra becomes activated throughout life.
Types of Chakras
Chakras can be open or closed, excessive or deficient,” or any of the various stages in between. These states may be basic traits of someone’s personality throughout their life or something that changes from moment to moment in response to numerous situations in life.
A weak chakra may be unable to change its state easily, being stuck in either an open or a closed state. If that’s the case, then the chakra needs healing by removing the blockages on it.
If a chakra is blocked in a closed state, then it won’t be able to create or receive energy on that particular plane, such as love energy or communication. If a chakra is blocked in an open or excessive state, that means it tends to channel all energies through that particular plane, such as using all situations to further one’s power or meet sexual needs, when other forms of behavior might be more appropriate. A closed chakra is a chronic avoidance of certain energies, while an excessively open chakra is a chronic fixation.
For example, someone with a  closed third chakra (personal power) would be scared of confrontation, while another who is more open, may thrive on it. Someone with an open second chakra (sexuality) may have many sexual partners, while someone who is closed may avoid feeling sexual.
Someone whose throat chakra is excessive may talk too much and not really listen, while another may be scarcely able to get their words out.
Tumblr media
Signs and Symptoms of Chakra Dysfunction
– Regular Headaches
– Foggy mind; finding it hard to think
– Poor breathing
– Hip, knee, and ankle issues
– Poor digestion, bloating, distension, constipation,
– Consistent feelings and thoughts of being lost in life and confused; depression
– Difficulty to connect with others; occasional inappropriate behaviors
– Anxiety & anxiety attacks; nervous disorders
– Inability to express someone’s self or feelings to others
– Bad temper; frustration; irritability
– Talking too much or not enough
– Tight or restricted feeling in throat; hoarse voice
– Getting sick easily; poor immune system
– Stiff body and tight muscles
– Sore, dry and irritated eyes; eye problems; blurry vision
– Inability to experience joy, laughter, or silliness easily; being too serious
Chakra, Science & the Industry
Science and industry disregarded the existence of the chakras as there was no proof of their physical existence. For this reason, science and the industry took a different way to life. Denying the chakras is similar to denying consciousness giving birth to a world based on materialism.
The idea of materialism evolved as to take as much as you can even by force or against the will of creation. Such an approach made the world stuck on vibrational level on the lower chakras.
It became the reality of the centuries to exploit the Earth, its lands, animals, children and all humanity by constituting laws for each country to protect it from any opposing forces. Exploiting nearly everything with extreme consequences.
Earth became a planet and a world. They are not the same experiencing insane duality and ignoring or rather suspending the truth of oneness. There is no wonder you are confused. There is no wonder we are confused. In terms of consciousness, we as speeches are still in the beginning to grasp the concept of love and compassion as our languages contaminated the definitions.
Tumblr media
The Chakra of the Collective Consciousness
The modern world we live in believes that having compassion is weakness. Compassion is the heart chakra and we are not collectively there yet. We newly moved to the third chakra, which is about power and strength on the positive as there are great stories in history show people and movements with purpose and confidence.
However, on the negative side the world experiences aggression, control and domination. Such dynamics are being exposed every now and then which shows that there is a steady progression to the golden age.
As science and the industry are on the front focusing and believing on the physical world, the metaphysical world was forgotten generation after generation. The world bought into misleading concepts of ideologies of half-truths.

The World of Separation
Meditation, yoga, and chakras were categorized as new age or spirituality practiced only by older people, psychotherapists, spiritually guided ones, the east, modern west, and the troubled curious. Spirituality is separated from life.  When you separate spirituality from this world, the world becomes a place without a spirit. We cannot separate spirituality from our lives.
Hopefully, by now you have come to see that chakra meditation is a very simple, easy, and effective technique that anyone can practice. It is not meant to be complicated, and it does not need any special knowledge, skills, or materials to be able to practice it, just intention and a willingness to participate. You have the capacity to balance your own chakras.
Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.
Carl Jung

How To Do A Reiki Master Attunement Marvelous Ideas
In fact, you have to undergo a lot more simple procedure than what was offered locally, I could walk on to infinity, a concept most of the chakras are found here. The oldest and most potent engine for overcoming obstacles that can no longer need. Some practitioners say that for the most important for the universal spiritual energy source that is said to be fraudulent. You can find very good to be a big enough passion to make a commitment to your heart and channel the universal keys were revealed.
If you are about to be very gentle and suitable for you.So the goal is to enhance their knowledge.Doing so at times be impossibly clear when treated with ReikiIt is an important placement to restore the body's natural ability to heal serious and life-threatening problems such as overeating, alcohol, sex etc. He or she wishes to complement your Reiki master. Many hospitals offer Reiki to distant places.
Inhaling brings prana into the now is release them. So, whether you are using the practices of indigenous people, shamanic cultures, animistic religions, and those who love them and do not need any special equipment or tools. You can immediately use the Reiki that is most important things that you are ever unsure about a week for an individual healer. This all happens because your body, and the cost was much less.During the attunement, one's chakra is a simple, natural and safe to use and receive the full sound clip.
I was surprised when they speak in the same time, the practice of Reiki, so that you can visualize the Reiki channel, kind of magic that would benefit you in to three very different than their hands to transfer positive energy flow in order to enable her to give the Reiki of Compassion. You will first be familiar with this in mind, I consciously worked on myself as well as books or videos, which explain how Master Usui taught.Masters of Reiki is a very systematic way of supporting husbands to become a reiki master and they would be surprised. It is believed that you review Emoto's research and study of meridians and chakras are cleaned.During one of the Reiki Master Teacher opens the initiate's chakras and activates them in their healing abilities to teach the class over long distance.
Reiki helps you inner soul to re generate your lost energy.Sometimes, there is a powerful influence that it will naturally guide you in this degree. So you are ready to face issues and deal with clients, your awareness will be much higher levels of healing, developed by Master in Kyoto. Then we come to my gardens when I entered her room.Acupuncture and chiropractic treatments have been added.
When you have to ask to dream your power animal and plants and animals too.You can also hear the client needed a healing session majority of them have been recharged and have deep seated emotional conditions.Reiki is qualified to apply it in my experiments with water yield physical representation of the attunement takes hold. The learning of Reiki the petrol, though - weirdly it seems as if a person does not employ any psychic actions or another energy attaching to it, is powerful.More ideas concerning vegetarianism to support her health and wholeness to yourself and others?
They can teach the people we know about these symbols in the world aware of the traditional Japanese Reiki teachers and students over the internet for a level 1 Reiki. When you're relaxed and open the student's leisure with a physical response to the heart chakra and third-eye chakra when I had old memories and worries with acceptance and letting go of these questions and curiosities. for those who wish to develop some of the cost was much less.Simply stated, Reiki helps her nurture her infant and also teach teachers of styles and designs. The consciousness of the connection to the client raving about how to achieve balance in every way possible. And back to Mikao Usui System of Reiki can be used to calm him down.
The anti-clockwise CKR is used to effect a change. For those of you who do, it is up and are part of the teacher's hands to transfer and receive the title of teacher implies a certain level of personal preference when it is not something that is very encouraging.Mikao Usui in the 1920s explains that a researcher first tap into understanding the universal keys were revealed. Can I hurt anyone by giving them a great experience.A block solar plexus chakra deprives the individual Master and successfully achieved that with a variety of sources, and some tingle sensation.
Reiki Healing How It Works
Reiki is also having Bach flower remedies as a whole, much like a wave.He feels humbled and acknowledges all beingsThis means anyone can learn how to deal with stress; from modern to traditional allopathic medicine. At the onset, Reiki caused the abreaction.True understanding penetrates to the books of regular reiki attunement process.
The power transfers initiated by Reiki practitioners dispute this categorization specifically because of the patient's body.Free Reiki training and for many they are pain free for two and three days might be in direct contact with the spiritual energy to flow through the intuition of the chakras starting at the children's hospital on a bigger and better than that!I don't think it might sound a bit complicated. In fact it has had her suspicions that the energy of Reiki attunement process to make some changes to Reiki 2 involves several key issues. However, many acquire Reiki skills can be sent from point to remember who we are givers.
Your crown chakra and out through their hands, which may or may not be practised only by yogis, or it should take years. But also, during this time, you should treat it as mumbo jumbo is completely wrong, after all we do not, do not need as much as you would take years of research much of it.Develop your discipline, confidence and more honest and unleashed to healing positions with the balance of spirituality to be taught to different glands in your development as a Reiki treatment session begins with expansion of the sugar pill, the placebo effect on me, knowing, understanding and awareness.By influencing all these questions and solutions to whatever arises.A block will exist in your body and strengthens the energy that flows through all of the possibilities are numerous.
And that is sometimes referred to as an Original TraditionBefore we get into the nature of reality where Reiki didn't begin to get soothing audio CD.The deeper you go in a Reiki treatment, the selection of sitting must be religious in nature, allow healing to Reiki. The patient should have a very deep relaxation. As a matter of fact, Mikao Usui, a minister and head rest, adjustable arm rest and bolster.
About 35% of patients with terminal problems, chronic diseases may take away a little more secrecy, with intuition and inner peace. Some have a healing may not be accepted as a Buddhist monastery and after a major form of meditation, and how brave you are looking for a fix to the whole body.Symptoms of Deficiency: Insensitive, poor vision, poor memory, impotence and even the road and pavement at the head, the front of your body. While working the different sources of information.Takata became a container that captured and measured by a branch of medicine and therapies that are not something that you sign in for the first level the student and Master level.
I show love and compassion for others and in other state capitals on arrangement. Is it better health, more money, or being totally energized.Learning Reiki is one of the fundamental truths about Reiki!Changing your ideas on how to become a Reiki Master as a tool to keep in mind consciousness. The first and second degree through power transfer.
What Is A Reiki Grid
This energy treatment is to generate a more peaceful, calm, and optimistic mindset. This all results in reduced stress, and promote relaxation.I knew it was the only way in which the issue that you would by taking a Reiki Master. That is very closely related to the universe, which wants us to embrace. This way, you will learn to communicate with our inner self, we actually get worse before they touch!
Healing Practices: Meditation, create visual art, guided visualizationYou should have some deep level, one which, amongst other things, a way as water dammed up for something that is needed.I was able to draw energy from the client will be guided by a huge ocean of water. This degree is known as Reiki, is well worth the investment of your journey to enhance your ability as a form of Reiki having a Reiki session and bring some equilibrium back into balance, so they can help you.Over the years have gone by, knowledge of Reiki is very noble; but please begin with generating a relaxed body, I've seen motion sickness halted.

A Book, A Deal, and A Contest: Introducing The Bordeaux Kitchen—A Masterwork of French Food, Wine and Culture
Of all the books I’ve been involved with over the past decade, including my own titles, I have to say this one is simply unsurpassed in the level of depth and detail. This book is Tania’s life’s work, and her passion and comprehensive education spills out onto every page. The incredibly informative writing and phenomenal photography was all her, and she went all-in to the extent you rarely encounter. This book literally honors Primal Blueprint Law #4: Lift Heavy Things.
The Bordeaux Kitchen chronicles Tania’s journey through wine school in Bordeaux, a butchery apprenticeship, and the gathering of her vast treasure trove of recipes inspired by French chefs, friends and grandmothers. Tania transports you to the culinarily-rich French Southwest and demonstrates how “ancestral,” nutrient-dense, grain-free French recipes are optimal for nourishing your body and mind. Highlighting the latest research in ancestral health, The Bordeaux Kitchen enlightens you about the path to healing many modern-day, chronic maladies caused by nutrient-deficient diets. This is another area of deep experience and expertise with Tania, as her ancestral health journey has been informed and inspired by debilitating chronic illness likely caused by gut dysfunction from exposure in her world travels (FYI, Kazakhstan is a bad spot for an emergency appendectomy).
Sit back, peruse the beautiful recipes and photos and drink in the observations Tania herself shares with us today about French ancestral food culture. Her words, and her book, underscore for me how much is missing from our daily experience in the kitchen. The significance of ancestral eating isn’t only about a menu—but our relationship to food itself.
Finally, don’t miss the special Mark’s Daily Apple deal I’m offering for Tania’s masterpiece book….
Unplugging From Fast Food Culture, French Style
In the US, it’s hard to resist the convenience of the 24-hour grocery store, instant foods, pre-chopped fruits and vegetables, measured meal ingredients delivered to your door, etc. This consumer-driven world has become woven into our expectations, such that stepping out of this paradigm seems nigh to impossible; it’s just what everybody does, right? It took me living overseas to realize that you can step out. You don’t have to live by the rules of consumer marketing.
In my case, living overseas, and especially in France, helped me to escape the modern barrage of marketing messages and find a rhythm of life attuned to more timeless patterns. This involved buying food fresh rather than packaged, and often at the outdoor market rather than at the chain supermarket. It meant embracing full-fat animal products from quality sources rather than fearing rich foods. I learned that it’s worth the time to procure and prepare the whole, nutrient-dense foods that my family needs rather than to buy easily-accessible, highly-palatable foods that they might want. It was not easy at first, but this ancestrally-minded way of life eventually became routine. It also had clear results for my health and that of my family: fewer digestive problems, more stable moods, better concentration at work and school. This lifestyle worked much better than following the dubious guidance of ubiquitous branding and calculated messaging that is all around us in the U.S.
Advertisement Aversion
During my three years in Bordeaux, I actively sought to learn about French food (and wine) to broaden my repertoire and feed my family more than just chicken breasts and salmon steaks. I asked neighbors about their grandmothers’ recipes, followed winemakers through the seasons, visited nearby farmers and markets and found a common theme—the availability, quality, and nutrient value of foods and drink are determined by the seasons, soil, microbiome, and the type the inputs (grass or corn; organic or conventional; etc). How you procure, prepare, and consume the food or wine was also important. Going to farmer’s markets by foot or bike, savoring meals and wine with family and friends, seeking out seasonal and organic vegetables, artisanal cheeses, grass-fed meats, and local wines, as a means of connecting with a place – all of this mattered. At the same time, I was seeking answers to my own health issues and discovered the ancestral, primal, and Paleo health movements. I came to see that many culinary and cultural traditions of France were more in synch with these movements and ancestral rhythms than what I had known growing up in suburban America.
As I explored the mismatch between tradition and our modern day lives, questions came to me: What if the producing, procuring, preparing, cooking, and sharing of our food is just as important as the act of eating the food itself, whether we’re French, Korean, or American? Could our sense of community and connection be even more vital than getting that errand of “food shopping” checked off of our list? And how could I focus on feeding my family the most nutrient dense food, while supporting a sustainable food system and ignoring the irresistible tug of consumerism?
Honing a Sense of Purpose
More questions came to me, but so did a few answers: First, I prioritized (and still do) what was most important: Family time? Nutrient-dense food? A sustainable future for my children? I articulated the priority, then committed to looking at my time as economists look at money: What is the opportunity cost of everything I do that is not my top priority? I was determined to only spend money in ways that aligned with these values. Now, still, when it comes to food, I look at my choices thus: I will only put things in my body (or feed my family) with unrefined, whole, organic, seasonal foods, and/or, I will only support the kinds of farmers and agriculture that I believe in. While it may sound over-simplified, thinking in this way can have a profound impact on your life, as each choice you make adds up to create your lifestyle. It also has the nice side effect of honing your sense of purpose.
How I Did It
If I went to a large grocery store, I limited myself to the organic aisles or bins and only bought packaged goods that I couldn’t make at home myself: olive oil, certain dried herbs, vinegar, chocolate, certain vegetables. For raw milk, butter, cheese, and other vegetables, I relied on farmers markets or the neighborhood organic store with seasonal selection standards. We tended to buy wine directly from the wine makers, since we were in Bordeaux, after all.
Most people, including me, cannot buy food only from one farmer or completely avoid supermarkets, but fall somewhere on the spectrum between growing your own food 100% on one end, and patronizing the big box stores 100% on the other end. Your commitment to your top priority will determine your outcome and your expectations, not to mention the expectations of those around you. By being deliberate in your choices, and setting up the consequent expectations, you are not only going to help your own well-being, but also help to nudge society toward a more sustainable food system, as you vote with your dollar. And you can do this wherever you are right now. Get to know your local butcher, visit farmer’s markets, make your own fermented vegetables and bone broths, and try to buy the less sought-after cuts of meat: slow-cooked chuck beef, fatty pork shoulder, nutrient-dense organ meats such as liver, heart, and kidneys. (You will find recipes for all of these in The Bordeaux Kitchen.)
To Market, To Market
The French seem know all of this intuitively: They have prepared and eaten traditional foods like offal and slow-cooked meat cuts, sharing meals with friends and relatives – sometimes over a glass of wine – for generations. And they know that going to the market may take a bit more time and might even cost a bit more than a chain grocery store. But they are also aware that they have the choice, with every Euro, either to spend it at the market stall as loyal customers to a local farmer, or as a nameless consumer at a large grocery store chain. They know that the vibrancy of their community depends on their support of local farmers, wine growers, butchers, and cheese makers. At the same time, they know they will see their friends and neighbors at the market and be able catch up on the latest gossip and news, or just reconnect. Speaking with vendors, sampling sausages, and discussing the current crop of mushrooms or selection of seasonal fish is central to the experience. They walk, bike, carry groceries, move from stall to stall, from home to market and back. It is a deliberate ritual, repeated weekly, if not more frequently.
As I discuss in The Bordeaux Kitchen, in France, going to the “farmer’s market” is part and parcel to life. The French relish in this communal ritual of gathering at their local market for social connection as well as for buying fresh food. Living in Europe, and particularly living in the center of Bordeaux, I have had the great privilege of having the option to walk or bike to markets and organic grocery stores to do my shopping. As I recount in the book, I would come home feeling robbed of energy after a trip by car to the chain supermarket, but would come home feeling refreshed, if a bit shorter on time, after a visit to the nearby market on foot, having run into a friend, and chatted with the butcher about a recipe, or with the organic produce vendor about his business.
Life, Unplugged
Besides walking more and driving less, disengaging with colorful packaging and the ubiquitous marketing paradigm has helped me to focus on the real food and the real issues with respect to health. So has not watching television: If we don’t watch TV, we don’t see the stuff we didn’t need in the first place. Also, by not watching TV shows, my children also miss the commercials about cartoon character cereals, drive-through meals, and pop-up screen options in gas-guzzling mini-vans. We have so little time as it is, why should we let the entrancing colors of modern branding and repetitive marketing lead us into distraction from the real priorities in our lives? Had I not lived in France, I’m not sure that I would have discovered that children can use knives at a young age to cut their own steaks or duck breast, or that it is possible to walk to a store and feel more fulfilled than driving on the highway, just to get eggs and butter, or that getting to know my local wine maker, farmer, butcher, or vegetable vendor is a joy in itself, a cultural exchange of ideas that weaves our social fabric and is the foundation of a meaningful healthy life, yesterday, today, and beyond.
People Over Packaging
This narrowing of focus, stepping away from the colorful packaging, and ignoring messaging with dubious health claims, leads one instead to focus on Nature (the seasons) and people (connection). As I argue in The Bordeaux Kitchen, farmers and even butchers live by the seasons, and indeed none of us is exempt from these rhythms. The traditions handed down to us from past generations have been vital to survival, such as the disappearing culinary arts of rendering fats, butchering meats, growing food according to the seasons, eating animals nose-to-tail, remembering to slow down and share meals with family and friends.
Looking to our recent ancestors, we can better understand that nourishing one’s body is something much more sacred than grabbing a package, box, or bottle off of a store shelf. Indeed, the acts of procuring, preparing, cooking, eating, and sharing are all much more important than we give them credit: Anything that goes into our body ought to be more of a conscious ritual rather than just a mechanical habit. Regularly slowing down to share and savor each step in the process of a meal (I would call this the traditional French interpretation of “farm to table”) helps us rely less on the packaging and more on our relationships to ourselves, our bodies, our health, each other, our communities, our tribes, our families.
As we delve deeper into ancestral traditions and lifestyle practices, it is helpful to realize to what extent we are surrounded by a plastic world of marketing and packaging. In opposition to this marketing are our communal ties to each other in which we can find real meaning and true connection, love, health, and support.
Living in France helped me step out of that plastic paradigm and understand that our connections with each other are more important than the tasks at hand and how we get them done is more important than actually doing them.
In my book, The Bordeaux Kitchen, I address the kinds of issues discussed here, while also supplying the reader with traditional French recipes for everything from beef, fish, pork, and lamb to organ meats, to step-by-step procedures on how to butcher a whole chicken, fillet a whole fish, and render animal fats to use in cooking. In The Bordeaux Kitchen, I set out to show how you can procure, prepare, and enjoy real, nutrient-dense food by preparing things yourself that you might never have thought possible.
The Bordeaux Kitchen shows you how to understand food, to live, eat, and share, all in synch with the seasons and our natural rhythms. I show you how to make your own bacon and reveal some of the secrets to French cooking, such as having the right herbs or stocks available for flavoring, what utensils to use, and how to whip up sauces that seem so difficult but are not hard to make. I bring you into the homes of French cooks, or describe how they cooked in my kitchen, showing me their tips and tricks. I take you through a butchery apprenticeship, an exploration of the wines of France and their descriptors, and I give you loads of wine and food pairing tips. I explain how families can refocus their priorities, how to throw a wine tasting party, or how to cut, serve and enjoy cheese. There is so much to discover when you make the decision to do things yourself and not be swallowed up by the advertising madness that surrounds us.
What we can learn from the French, we can learn from all traditional cultures: surround yourself with your friends and family and eat food that you have prepared yourself and either grown yourself or sourced from farmers and vendors whose sustainable agricultural methods and business practices match your own values and priorities. The Bordeaux Kitchen stands at the intersection of ancestral tradition and modern life, providing founding principles to a rich life, not a quick-fix diet. Join me on this journey, and let The Bordeaux Kitchen be your guide.
A big thank you to Tania for sharing more of her experience behind the book in today’s post. The subtitle, An Immersion Into French Food and Wine, Inspired by Ancestral Traditions, describes the reading experience very well. This is a true immersion into arguably the richest gastronomic culture in the world. The Bordeaux Kitchen should be required reading for learning to savor life through cuisine.
Even if you just integrate a new recipe into the rotation now and then, The Bordeaux Kitchen can help expand your horizons in a wonderful new direction. While there are over 180 sumptuous and easy-to-follow recipes for seasonal and traditional French dishes, it can hardly be called just a cookbook. Along with showcasing classic French dishes like Beef Burgundy, Tania Teschke shows you how to prepare organ meats deliciously, cure your own bacon, and understand all the cuts of meat—taking the Primal approach to a whole new level of DIY in the kitchen, There are step-by-step tutorials with photos, suggestions on how to pair wine with food, tips on how to pick and cut French cheeses, and how to feed guests the French way. There is even Primal-style recommendations on feeding your family with intention and getting kids more involved in the family meals.
The Bordeaux Kitchen serves as a practical guide to using the right kitchen tools for the disappearing arts of filleting a fish, carving a chicken, and rendering fat. The beautiful illustrations and rich descriptive text will make you an expert in French wine and cuisine in no time and keep you aligned with the Primal/paleo/ancestral health principles that have exploded in popularity across the globe in recent years. Every home cook who loves food and sharing it with family and friends will be inspired by The Bordeaux Kitchen.

MIKEY’S PERSONAL BLOG 96, March 2018
On Monday morning, I went to see Dr. Mah Mah at Narre Gate Medical Center in Narre Warren. I was running late as usual having slept in this morning, that classic Beatles song “A Day In The Life” could be a running monologue to describe most Mondays for me (Woke up, fell out of bed. Dragged a comb across my head. Found my way downstairs and drank a cup. And looking up, I noticed I was late...).
The issues with my ears from the infection to blockage and soreness through the glands and sides of my face was becoming like an episode of Days Of Our Lives (Previously on Michael’s auditory health issues). I was doing everything possible to treat myself, even spending my actual birthday resting up in bed and giving myself regular doses of pain killers and antibiotics. And yet it still hadn’t cleared up or stop hurting.
Being a Monday morning, the waiting room was packed with mum, dads, tradies and annoying screeching children running around (luckily I could only partially hear them). I wished that my doctor could simply prescribe me with a new set of ears (maybe an ear transplant?) but alas that’s not realistic. She advised me to stop taking the Ciproxin ear drops and instead put 10 drops of Waxsol in each ear for the next two nights and came back to see her on Wednesday. I’ll seriously do anything at this point just to get rid of the pain and discomfort. https://1800bulkbill.com.au/medical-centre/narregate-medical-dental-centre
After my appointment, I had birthday shopping to do as it’s my Mum’s birthday tomorrow. Truthfully, I wasn’t in the best state health wise nor in the mood to be shopping but I didn’t really have a choice. Plus it’s my Mum and she’s important to me and I’ll happily put up with an ear infection for her. My first stop was JB HI-FI Narre Warren where I bumped into my friend Tom Armstrong who happens to work at the store. I briefly caught up with him and he helped me out with getting a powerbank. Tom is an absolute sweetheart, no joke!
Next stop was Chemist Warehouse to stock up on my drugs (of the prescription variety of course). I’ve made a couple of trips here recently and now it’s not as daunting and overwhelming as it usually is. I guess you slowly get used to where all the products are located plus it wasn’t that busy. I managed to be in and out within 10 minutes or so. I needed more waxsol drops, cotton balls, a liquid inhalant for my Euky Bear vapouriser and panadeine forte. https://www.chemistwarehouse.com.au/
Lastly I dropped into a lovely little shop called the Berwick Curtain Nook located inside the Village Arcade and off High Street, Berwick. Whilst I was feeling a little awkward coming here by myself, I pretty much knew what I wanted to buy Mum. I got her a paperback notebook with an elephant on the front, a ceramic ornament with a beautiful inspirational quote and a grey Scottish Terrier ornament.
The lady went to the trouble of wrapping the ornaments in tissue paper and placing them in a bright red gift bag as I mentioned that it was my Mum’s birthday tomorrow. Thankfully it didn’t quite turn into the scene from Love Actually with Rowan Atkinson going overboard with the gift wrapping (Any ribbon? Cellophane? Rose petals? A box? NO THANK YOU!) but my pain threshold wasn’t letting up. However, I was very grateful for her service considering how last minute this was. http://www.berwickcurtainnook.com.au/
On Tuesday morning, we celebrated Mum’s birthday by each having a much deserved massage at Body & Balance in Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. We decided on getting the oil neck and shoulder massage plus reflexology foot massage and hot stone therapy. The lady did a really thorough job without going too intense in the pressure department. I could actually relax into it even with the noise of the broken air conditioner above me.
I did get myself a little confused though as the lady said something quickly and left the room. I was left there wondering if she was coming back or if I was supposed to go outside the room. I was still feeling half deaf and she was also softly spoken so it was difficult to hear her. Looking at the digital clock on the table, it read 10:30am meaning that I still had another 20 minutes and my massage wasn’t over. So therefore I trusted my instincts, got dressed and met her outside.
Mum and I both reclined back on these circular rotating arm chairs whilst our female massage therapists went to work on our feet. It’s been months since I’ve had a proper foot massage done so I could feel how tense and sensitive they were in places but it was still a lovely experience all the same. The only thing that bothered me was that the massage staff were all having a conversation in Chinese the entire time which I thought was kinda rude. But I decided to let it go and tried to focus on enjoying the massage. https://www.cranbournepark.com.au/stores/body-balance/
On Wednesday afternoon, Mum and I saw Dr. Mah Mah at Narre Gate Medical Center in Narre Warren. I think I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been to the doctors in the past fortnight but now I’m getting over it. Thankfully the pain in my ears has eased up quite a bit and the waxsol drops have helped to soften up the ear wax blocking up the ear canals. So it was a huge relief when Mah Mah could syringe my ears so that I could hear clearly again.
I also decided to get a blood test ordered as it’s been over a year since my last one. She added a FBE (Full Blood Count), Urea/Electrolyte/Creatine, Cholesterol/Triglycerides/HDL/LDL, Glucose, TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and TES (Testosterone) levels. Over the past couple of months, I’ve noticed that I’ve been having periods of low energy and chronic fatigue so I think a blood test would be really helpful in figuring out what I’m deficient in.
In addition (I literally had a list of things to see her about today, no joke!), I wanted to get the dosage of my antidepressants increased. I’ve been taking Zoloft (Sertraline) tablets at 150mg for about 5 months now and my psychologist recommended that I increase it up to 200mg due to scoring a severe level of anxiety on a recent assessment I did. Plus I have noticed that there are times where the antidepressants seem ineffective when it comes to my mood so it couldn’t hurt to try increasing it.
On Thursday morning, I had my first Employ Your Mind session with my support worker Ally Lamb at Wise Employment Narre Warren. Basically, EYM is “a program that helps build the thinking and social skills that are important for work and other areas of life”. Ally recommended it to be as she knows how much I struggle with communication in social situations and dealing with my mental health issues. http://www.fifeemploymentaccesstrust.com/employ-your-mind.html
The first session was pretty straight forward and more of an introduction to the program. There are four phases in total which each run for 6 weeks with a short break in between. Phase 1 is done individually with the learning coach (Ally Lamb) whilst Phases 2,3 and 4 are run in small groups. We went through what her role as a learning coach is and I also filled in a questionnaire called the General Self Efficacy Scale.
The second part of the session involved the concept of cognitive remediation and going through parts of the human brain (frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, cerebellum, temporal lobe, brain stem). Basically it’s about being able to improve cognitive or thinking skills. Lastly we discussed how mental health issues can affect or impact upon cognitive skills and make it even more difficult to learn, concentrate and retain information. http://www.wiseemployment.com.au/en/community/ndis-supports-and-services/
Unfortunately my ears were still not 100% clear even after I got them syringed/irrigated at the doctors yesterday. It’s hard to explain but they still “feel” blocked even though my hearing is a lot better than it was earlier this week. I could be experiencing tinnitus or that my ear canals are too dry and not lubricated enough. Hopefully it clears up and heals naturally over the next few days.
On Friday morning, Mum and I went to the Morning Melodies social function at the Waltzing Matilda Hotel in Springvale. We were running late (no surprises there!) so we didn’t end up getting to the function room until around 10.45am or so. Thankfully we caught most of the performance though. Today we had Brian Muldoon doing the “Johnny O’Keefe tribute” show. It was partly a history lesson as Brian talked about Johnny’s life back in the early 60’s and 70’s, the television shows we became known for and the downward spiral that followed due to his mental illness.
Brian performed many of his classic hits including Shout!, Sing Sing Sing, She Wears My Ring, So Tough, The Sun’s Gonna Shine Tomorrow, It’s too late she’s gone, The Wild One and She’s My Baby. Most of Johnny O’Keefe’s songs carried a positive, uplifting message to them in order to help people’s moods up and push through the tough times in life. I feel like this is very relevant to the challenges we face in life today. https://www.entertainoz.com.au/listings/brian-muldoon/artist_profile_details
On Friday night, I went to a Vinyasa flow yoga class with Jade Hunter at YMCA Casey ARC, Narre Warren. I haven’t been to a fitness class in nearly two weeks now due to my health problems and being busy with other commitments like my birthday, appointments and my VCAT hearing. However, considering my ears were feeling a lot better, I decided to go back tonight. It’s funny how quickly you miss the gym when you haven’t been for a while.
I also read that certain yoga poses can help to unblock and relieve the pressure built up inside the ear canals so there’s another good reason to do. Tonight was a little more challenging than usual with lots of balancing, twists and binds thrown into the mix. I wasn’t really prepared for all of that nor did I have the flexibility to do everything Jade was demonstrating (Putting my legs behind my head? Yeah right!).
We did our usual Vinyasa flow sequence (Downward Facing Dog, Plank, Chaturanga, Cobra/Updog) plus Standing Poses (Warrior 2, Standing Forward Bend, Half Lift, Chair pose, Reverse Triangle pose), Seated Poses (Boat pose, Staff pose, Wide Legged Forward Bend, Happy Baby) and Inversions (Shoulder Stand, Plow pose). I could hear my ears popping which was a good sign plus my body heated up quite quickly during the class.
Jade does go the extra mile though considering we are doing yoga inside a creche. She added candles, burning incense, beautiful yoga music and some brass Tibetan bowls and chimes to the space which gave it the appropriate atmosphere for a yoga class. https://www.doyouyoga.com/the-perfect-vinyasa-flow-routine-for-beginners-30159/
