Hi (I almost never use tumblr so lmk if I’m doing smth wrong!!) I’ve read a few of your Hazbin Hotel fics on AO3 and I just have to ask, how do you manage to post things so quickly?! I’m trying to start my own Hazbin hotel fic and I’m so fixated on getting their characterization correct that it’s taking me like 3X longer than normal to write lol!! If you have any advice or tips that would be amazing but of course, no pressure. I was just so curious. You’re very talented!!

Definitely not doing anything wrong! :D I wish I had a better answer for you, but the honest truth is that it's a combination of me having a lot of writing experience AND that I just had a fuckton of free time the past four weeks. It's kinda funny that you sent this ask now, because I just started a rotation for school that is going to consume very literally like 90% of my waking life on the days I have shifts for about three weeks, so you're about to watch me write BARELY ANYTHING AT ALL, hahaha.

That said, I relate to you very aggressively on the matter of worrying about characterization. That was the number one thing stopping me from writing fanfic for years and a lot of how I got over it was practicing characterization in OC RPs where I had to work with various characters but didn't have to be so afraid of missing something and getting them wrong because they were my characters so I already knew everything about them.

I think for Hazbin Hotel in particular, a lot of how identifiable and zany the characters are comes from their dialogue and their physicality, so personally I've frequently been rewatching little bits of the show to take point on how the characters genuinely talk and act! For Alastor, for example, I actually frequently have to un-fancy his dialogue while I'm writing by referencing canon conversations he's had because it's so easy to code switch into making him as prim as his general vibe conveys when in reality he actually does not talk like that. For Charlie and Lucifer, a lot of their vibe comes from the lack of smoothness in their speech - they stutter, hem, haw, backpedal, etc. For Angel, I think the way he poses himself and when he chooses to make sex jokes and touch people (or respect their space!) says a lot as well.

Practice makes this a LOT easier, but for my very first fic, I ended up taking a lot of notes on what I felt like captured the vibes of a character! I don't really do this anymore, but it was very helpful initially for giving me an understanding of what goes into my perception of any particular characterization.

if i wanted to be prepared for the percy jackson show coming out which books should i read? and how many are there because ive seen like three series and i don’t know whether they’re related or not

alright!!!!! i’m so happy you want to read the books because they are amazing! this is going to be long just as a warning 😭

so this first season (hopefully of quite a few) is based on the first book of the ‘percy jackson and the olympians’ series ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief’. that’s really the only one you need to read for this season, but it ends in such a way that you’re going to want to keep reading babe

in the percy jackson and the olympians series (pjo) there are 5 books in total: the lightning thief, the sea of monsters, the titans curse, the battle of the labyrinth, and the last olympian (my personal favourite). all of them are incredible and i’m sure you’d love them!

the next series after that is the heroes of olympus (hoo) which brings in new characters in the first two books, but there are also 5 books in total: the lost hero, the son of neptune, the mark of athena, the house of hades, and the blood of olympus!

then there is a third series which doesn’t follow the story of percy (which obviously the first series revolves around and the second is partially founded on) and is called the trials of apollo (toa)! i’ve read toa 2 times, so i can’t really remember the book names as i wasn’t super into it but there are once again 5 books!

on top of that, there are novellas and short stories that slot in randomly through these series, as well as two other books: Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods, and Percy Jackson and the Greek Heroes, but both of these are basically just mythology lessons.

there are also more books in what we call the riordanverse, which is essentially more characters in the same universe. there are the Mangnus Chase books (magnus is annabeth chase’s cousin), which i can’t say i’ve properly read but i will be getting round to it! and there’s also the Kane Chronicles which i adore. there are also a few books which are like joint stories for the kane chronicles and percy jackson, but i’m not too sure if magnus chase has something similar.

to make this short, there are lots of books that relate to percy jackson, but in terms of the show just as it is with 1 season, the only one you would need to read is the lightning thief (which in reality, the show is probably going to be very very similar to the book so you don’t even really need to)

I think I have tips for writing under sab [writing tips] for writing in general, writing tips, writing in character, and writing fluff

but I can talk a little bit about maintaining storylines:

for a storyline, usually I have a general sense of where I want a story to go — or at least a concept.

it depends on your style — sometimes people write a scene out or they plan first — this is usually a mixed bag for me — depends on how much of an idea I have

planning for me looks like a bulleted list of scenes — just one or two sentences (not even full ones) of just what I need to happen

and then I start writing, and once I start writing, I edit the list based on what I have planned out — sometimes scenes are cut out or scenes are added or changed.

this helps me keep track of the story I’m telling and where I’m going so I’m not diverting off course too badly (this is my approach when it comes to writing novels too)

one tip I should follow too is making a list of references you want to come back to — like if you have a little detail you wrote where you’re like I should reference this again later — you should make a note (I tend to forget to do this lmao)

i'll do my best as an arospec ace person in the area of love advice because i don't know what i'm doing!!!

personally, i'm very straightforward with how i feel about people. if i like someone they're going to know it because i can't hide my feelings and i choose to let them show because i don't feel that romantic feelings should be hidden. then again, i'm not that embarrassed when i get crushes and will tell the person pretty quickly how i feel.

in your case, since you're worried about ruining the relationship, i would have a more serious talk with them. if they're worth it (which may sound harsh but it's true), they will hear you out and try to understand you. i always felt better after i told people how i felt, even when i got rejected. and me and the girl that rejected me all that time ago are still good friends!!!

so to answer your question, yes. i would confess. although i've never been one to hide how i feel in the first place.

please keep in mind that this is easier said than done. confessing is hard, and while writing it out makes it sound easy, it can be very scary because you're vulnerable in front of someone. take it at your own pace and make sure you talk through any concerns or feelings you have. being vulnerable is hard. but in my opinion, it's worth it.

Anyyyway I'm back, I'm the one who said you inspired them to create some ocs. I've kinda worked some aspects of them, missing the names (how can we in universe have something like Rhaenys and then Jon, no shade to my boy tbh) and some backstory details.

So I kinda wanted to ask if you have any advice for well built characters/have some resources to suggest, whatever you want, if you can of course!!

oh my gosh, hi!! i'm so happy to hear from you & hope you've been well! i'm proud of you for continuing to work on your oc. not letting yourself give up is such a huge beginning step. as for names, i have a few resources for you! this site has a list of all male & female names used in the series, since there's typically some crossover. there's always fantasynamegenerators, too, which also has an extensive asoiaf section!

aside from naming resources, i do have a fair bit of advice about creating characters, mostly things i've learned through experience!

try not to get too in your head about having the most unique oc or doing something specifically because it's popular. this pertains to character traits, their appearance, their background, their ship. don't sweat small similarities between your ocs and other ocs. it's important that you do what drives you and what inspires you. take it easy on yourself.

balance is the most important thing. shadows are darker beneath brighter light, after all. having a character's story be entirely devoid of happiness or of strain leads to them coming off as very one note. beat them up a bit. give them a win. humble them. inflate their pride. make sure your character is a mixed bag. i've found that it makes them a lot more relatable.

speaking of giving them a win — give your character something (or someone) that they're passionate about. history? art? warfare? a sibling? a childhood friend? a parent? give them something they're good at. even something they're unmatched at. it makes them human.

i try to pin down as much as i can about a character physically and make a note of it. i know where all of alyse's scars are. i know she has a beauty mark on her ankle. i know she's 6'4 with hair so dark it's nearly black and stretch marks on her stomach and hips and breasts. referencing little things like this about them just makes the character feel corporeal. give them flaws. give them something that is strikingly beautiful about them. make them the same thing, even.

let people hate them. let people love them. i've seen a lot of people who talk big about not having your oc be well-loved by characters, to not have multiple people be attracted to your character. but there's genuinely no harm in it, as long as it doesn't feel super forced.

ultimately, this is for you! think long and hard about what you want out of your oc and fucking GO for that. write what your heart wants to write. ship with the character you want to ship with. nothing else matters at the end of the day.

this is about you finding a creative outlet. that's it! chase your bliss, my friend, no matter what it entails!

hi! i go to a lot of concerts alone bc i don't have friends that listen to the same music as i do! it's important to learn to enjoy your own company. it's hard and yeah i do feel lonely at shows from time to time but it's also nice to just feel the music on your own and not have to worry about other people. i usually stand at the side and just dance or enjoy myself, buy myself a beer or another drink and really get into the music. if i queue alone i sometimes talk to people but usually i keep to myself too bc im really shy irl shjssh i usually listen to music before and read my book (i take my kindle to a lot of shows lol) and honestly even if you come off as weird and off-putting, who cares? you should only care about yourself!! you paid your own hard earned money and you should have fun! but always with respect for the people around you! on march 8th for example i went to a concert of a german rap group alone and literally had the best time ever because i could keep to myself and be unbothered!! but sometimes i ask on twitter if anyone else is going alone to a show and if we should go together! that's nice too :) but yeah i also feel like I'm the wrong person to ask this because i am extremely introverted and shy and don't approach people at concerts and just keep to myself wkdjdhsgsg anyways! i think learning to enjoy your own company is important! respecting others is important! and just enjoying yourself is important!!! don't make memories and experiences dependent on other people, i know having someone to go with is nice but enjoying yourself is too :)

so there's actually two different methods on creating polls on desktop vs mobile, and I think it should also be made clear that I use Chrome on a PC, so if it's a different method on Macs/Safari/Firefox/etc, other people are welcome to correct me or add on to this post.

But essentially: if you're on mobile, you're gonna wanna click on the "Create New Post" button on the bottom toolbar, which should look like a blue box with a pencil in it. Once there, you're gonna wanna look to the bottom right corner for a symbol that looks like this:

the one I've circled in red. After you tap that, it's gonna provide you with a blank poll for you to fill in to your pleasure. add a goofy title, fill in at least two answers, and you're all set to go!

Desktop, on the other hand, has an extra step. Because polls are an add-on to text posts, rather than their own category, you're gonna wanna click here first:

and then, once you get a popup, you're gonna notice a popup in the top right corner. It's either going to encourage you to "try a shiny new post editor", if you haven't enabled it yet, or it's going to show a switch that you can enable or disable

to enable the option to create polls, you're going to want to turn this option off. Legacy Editor means you're using the old format, and polls are only supported by the new format.

Once you hit "Let's go!", you'll be presented with another blank text post with a colored toolbar of options to edit your post.

and the poll option should be the three little orange lines, right next to the pink camera, and all you'll have to do is follow the same simple steps! make up a title, give your poll some options, and voila! you have created your very own #TumblrPoll

Hi, sorry to bother you but I had an idea for an AU where Varian is studying an artifact called the 'Silver Wing' yes I took that from Pokemon, no I am not ashamed. The premise is basically after spending weeks trying to understand the artifact and decipher the scrolls left about it. Turns out it chooses a holder and works in the ways the sundrop and moonstone do by kind of staying inside the heart of the user.

After a very selfless act on Varian's part (rescuing Rapunzel from falling from the balcony, I dunno if you've seen a Silent Voice but its kind of like that scene. He manages to pull her up only to fall himself and in the moment the artifact reacts and brings him back up to the tower safely in what appears to be a gust of wind blowing around him) However after the initial excitement he finds the Silver Wing has disappeared and, you guessed it. It's part of him now. However he starts to notice he has some upper back problems (I'm honestly just deflecting at this point) and after some hours he ends up sprouting some wings. He's super freaked and that's all I got.

I used to roleplay a lot, and have so many ideas, but the rp crowd has kind of died and you are kind of my favorite author. So I was hoping for maybe a little advise? Or if you know an author who co-writes things?

That sounds like a really fun idea for an au! I love a good wing fic, the concept is SO interesting! The big reveal of the flight powers especially sounds really awesome, I live for “oh my god WHAT” moments in fics!! With wings too it’s so easy to hop onto things like preening as a social bonding thing, or other bird things. There’s a lot of possibilities! Imagine rapunzel's FACE lol

As for advice, the best I really have for finding RP partners and co-authors is to join some of the online fan communities! I found my co-writer Iza (for Cor Meum)  on a varigo server, and same with basically all my online friends in different communities! Discord is a great place to start, so is tumblr, but I personally like to drop into places with lots of people since it’s easy to slip in and out of conversations as they go along without getting overwhelmed. Kinda suss out the vibe before jumping in, you know? Your results may vary of course, depending on your personal comfort zones. 

Though I’m not active on any public servers anymore I’m sure they’re out there! Once you narrow down the general masses and find the really devoted fans I’m sure you could find a RP partner or even a group! Same with a co-writer, I find that ramble channels are great to see whose ideas you might vibe with–that’s how I found a couple of my friends! I'm pretty solitary by nature lol, my hobby is sitting alone on a computer, after all hehe

That or sometimes the most fun thing is to write your ideas yourself! To each their own lol. I find that writing out my ideas in a point form outline really helps me get the idea out of my head and into something more tangible–and then once it’s there I can start shuffling around for pacing and ebb and flow and etc etc, taking it from concept to proper outline, and then once all that’s done the writing is easy lmao. You just follow the road map! I find that looking into things like Campbell's hero's journey, the Save the Cat beat sheet, and the like really help while prepping an outline for a good, cohesive story.

aw gosh thank you for the kind words! I used Storyboard Pro to make and edit it; its a great program but annoyingly pricey -- though they do have a free trial at least

I did use clip studio paint to make my older Magnus Archives animatic (its my main drawing program!) and edited it in adobe premiere. it's definitely doable but just less convenient for animating imo

If you're looking for free storyboarding software tho, Storyboarder by Wonder Unit is pretty good! I used that for a while and it did its job pretty well, and can link up to let you draw in photoshop if you have it

this is a poster i made for my call to action assignment in humanities! it's a bunch of basic and easy stretches for people who sit and work at a desk all day (me)

the idea is that you'd put the poster up above ur desk and do the stretches every 30 minutes or so,, the whole routine won't take more than about 6 minutes to complete and when done regularly it can prevent wrist, shoulder, neck and back pain! :)

all these stretches can be done while sitting (although i HIGHLY recommend you stand up and move around while taking a break from working)
