An In Depth Look at the Gwyn/Lightsinger Theory

As always, we are bringing a text based analysis straight from the books!

Full disclosure, I have mixed feelings about the Gwyn Lightsinger theory. It definitely could be the case, but I also have an alternate theory about her powers that I'll share at the end. The reason I don't love it 100% is because it is founded in a bit of a messy way. My understanding is g/wynriels started this theory because: Lightsinger and Shadowsinger! Light and dark! Cute, meant to be. Then us Elriels replied by saying babes, lightsingers are evil AF and that's not a good thing. Thus Evil Gwyn was born which I do not subscribe to.

Lightsinger *is* totally an option, I but there is some context both for and against and I'll share my take on both sides! That being said, not a whole lot is actually said about lightsingers and the manner in which their power functions.

Here is the only passage describing lightsingers in the book (and this is their description on wiki):

Key words that stand out to me re: Gwyn- ethereal, friendly faces.

Now let's read the chapter where Gwyn's singing lures Nesta into a spell-like trance where she then begins to scry completely against her will or knowledge:

Key words: The bells ringing at 7 pm. A faint glow radiating from Gwyn.

Key takeaways: Gwyn's song beckoning and calling only to Nesta, lulling her into a place down into her own bones which are somehow then used to scry. Scrying with your own bones is *not* generally possible!

Key takeaways: Doors and pathways trying to be opened by Nesta's own body and the stones of the mountain becoming scrying tools while listening to the 7 pm service.

Key takeaways: Nesta literally collapses and everyone is looking at her concerned. She was the ONLY one who has been affected by the priestesses service in this way.

Now let's take a look at Azrie'ls bonus chapter:

Azriel and his shadows can hear a song, and his shadows replied to it. One of the most critically important elements to this occurring that I feel very few people discuss is the importance of Cauldron made items being the only ones having this reaction to Gwyn. Nesta herself is Cauldron made, and Gwyn's song literally controlled her entire person (I'm not saying intentionally! That is just what happened.) Azriel bears truth-teller, a Cauldron made weapon. There is a lot of indication that his shadows are also closely linked with truth-teller, they are all commonly described as a part of him. Only Made beings or beings with Made objects on their person can hear Gwyn's song, and it absolutely lures Cauldron made power. Is this lightsinger power? Maybe. We simply don't have enough context to the nature of lightsingers or Gwyn to say for sure, but it is compelling.

Now Azriel, bearing a Made object, finds himself present as the bell chimes 7 pm for the evening service. Exactly as Nesta had.

I do think an important mention is also this:

Does Azriel sing because he's a shadowsinger? No, it's just a being/species/whathaveyou. As lightsinger is just a being. The fact that they do sing is irrelevant to singer in their alleged respective titles.

So key items *for* Gwyn being a lightsinger: She is described as an ethereal beauty, containing a secret beneath her lovely face by Nesta. She has some sort of spell like power in her song. Is it luring specifically? Or is it something that calls to and controls Made objects?

My personal opinion is that the latter is more explicit in the text. There is no conversation around lightsingers having any specific impact on Made objects and Made objects alone. Why are only these two experiencing Gwyn's impact on their powers? If she could have had a luring effect on Cassian as well, in his POV book, I would have loved to see it.

I also think Gwyn being part river nymph might prove more relevant. Lightsingers are creatures of the Bog of Oorid, and they lure their prey into the bog. River nymphs are different water creatures entirely. So when would a fae or river nymph have gone to the Bog of Oorid to mate, when lightisngers eat both human and fae alike? I think it's possible we may see she is a Siren or some other yet to be discovered being.

I also think her proximity to the Cauldron in Sangravah, which we now know was corrupted and leaks dark power, is *extremely* interesting. I'm here looking for the connection for why only Nesta and Azriel experience this with Gwyn, and I think the Cauldron will prove relevant!

Whether Gwyn is a lightsinger, whether she is something else, I can't wait to find out! Please know I love Gwyn. My being an Elriel does not detract from how beautiful I thought her story was. Her being evil would honestly devastate me. However, I don't quite understand why g/wynriels are against the notion of Gwyn's secret powers and it being reflected again in the bonus chapter. It only serves to actually make her relevant to the plot, which is otherwise very lacking for our cute ginger Valkyrie!

What do you guys think? Are you still team Gwyn lightsinger after reading or are you seeing other options?

I wrote this in response to someone in a malevolent fan discord pointed out Canary in a Coal Mine by The Crane Wives being a Jarthur song, which I completely agree, but the song is a whole analysis on its own.

theres that extra jab of Kayne using the phrase in 28, and thou it was due to them literally being in a coal mine and the color yellow, it got me thinking about jarthur in terms of actual coal mine canaries.

So miners used canaries as a warning sign to toxic gases, having much smaller and sensitive lungs then humans. So when the birds succumbed to the gases, becoming ill or dying, the miners knew to escape before they faced the same.

Arthur is John’s ‘a piece of driftwood to hold onto, otherwise he’ll drown, nothing to him’ other then a vessel for him to no longer be trapped and get what he wants. Arthur is the canary John brings into the mine knowing arthur will suffer but not carrying because it benefits him.

Except miner’s started to see these birds as pets, they felt bad, but they still needed them. So they invented special cages that when they noticed the canaries reaction to a toxic gas, they could close a door that would prevent the outside air from getting in the cage and pump clean air in. This wasn’t done for economic reasons, just out of empathy. John grew to view Arthur as more then a tool, rather a friend. Someone he is still bound to, someone he still needs to use, but someone he cares for and someone he will save.

Not to mention, further connections with the symbolism of canaries and Arthur. First of all, they are song birds and were prized for their voices. They were seen to teach how to experience the sweetness of life and how to use ones own voice. They were the light at the end of the tunnel, John learning humanity from Arthur. New beginnings, getting out of your comfort zone. Loyalty, courage, protection of yourself and those you love, optimism. But they weren’t a purely positive sign. A caged canary spoke of limitations or even entrapment, particularly of an emotional nature, a sign of vulnerability and of of an unfaithful friend that has damaged trust and jeopardised your safety. “If a strong negative force kills the Canary in your dream, this is a sure sign that somebody has done something wrong – whether that’s you or another, it symbolises guilt, shame, regret or anger at your own actions, or inaction especially if you have not been able to protect something important to you” further more, surrounding the phrase ‘canary in a coal mine’ is them being an warning of impending doom to those around them. Some say them as a omen of a family death. And this is more john/the kiy but “if the Canary is singing into your ear, this is said to represent the flattery of others who may be wanting something out of you”

Though they, specifically yellow canaries are also a sign of good luck, which the boys definitely dont have

The Time has come, I shall speak now about my one true pairing, the couple I love the most in Sonic's universe: Knuckles×Rouge

Knouge is a relationship trope that simply works sooooo fucking well!!😖😖 It's fresh juice of the finest quality👌👌, I have seen this kind of relationship a lot: Scrooge x Goldie, Carmelita x Sly, Puss x kitty and of course Batman x Catwoman... 😏😏 (by the way all this couples already kissed, what the fuck are you waiting for SEGA? 😒😒) Is basically the kind of relationship that has losts of banter and tension and honestly they give a lot of material for good juicy stories.

This was the first relationship that could be considered canon in the games regarding having mutual feelings for each other (because at that time Sonic didn't have the relationship with Amy that he has now). When Rouge was introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, she was created to be Knuckles' rival in skills but not only that, she was intended to be also his love interest in a more specific way but in the end they decided to keep things more subtle and not as completely obvious as Amy's display of feelings for Sonic, also she was going to be named Nails the bat, so Nails 💅 and Knuckles 👊 rhymes with Tails but they named her ROUGE which means RED in French a ROMANCE language, red like Knuckles I'm just saying.

SA2 in fact has the very first "romantic" scene between two sonic characters, because absolutely no one will convince me ever that the moment when he saves her and they look into each other's eyes holding hands wasn't a romantic scene, like seriously 😤😏👇

and look what I found, this is an official sonic book from SEGA:

So the best words to describe them are: "Polar opposites attraction" "Pure vs flirtatious" "Honor vs dirty play" "Guardian vs Thief" "Endless banter" "Arguing married couple" And of course: "SEXUAL TENSION" 😂😂 even in the damn soundtrack!! Have you listened to Knuckles theme? "Kick the rock (Wild Canyon)" SEGA approved that song! 😂 Here let me show the best part of the lyrics:

"I gotta chase a bat, uh" "Yeah Rouge she is sexy and smooth, a double cross spy thief that's out for my jewels, uh! I'm feeling her in mysterious ways" Boy... Knuckles suddenly got hit by puberty or something 😂😂 he was unknowingly horny for her already...

"Who could'a did this? That snitch named Rouge! When I catch her I'm gonna get her with these tools" There you are, come here little thief! Think you going to fly and get away quick? Uh, uh! Give up the Emerald or die! I don't love you!! " And now he becomes a tsundere denying feelings nobody asked him if he has 😂 and we all know he wouldn't let her die.

Also the most important thing that makes them absolutely canon is that Sonic ships them, Sonic's shipping mind is indisputable, he did it a few times already: in Sonic Rivals he asks them if they are on a date, in one of Sonic's phone games they start arguing because Knuckles was salty that Rouge was so nice wishing Sonic happy birthday and that she wasn't that nice to him in HIS birthday (jealous much?) and Sonic says to tails that that is true love and then Rouge goes full tsundere denying it 😂😂😂, precious 👌👌.

Let's also mention what happened in sonic X specifically with the original Japanese dub, Rouge just wouldn't stop flirting (+backstabbing let's be honest😛) and knuckles wouldn't stop reacting to it 😂

In this scene ☝ in Japanese she purposely asked him if he was "active" At night too 🤣🤣🤣 she just meant she is active at night because she is a bat... But the way she said that 😆, she was known for making lots of dirty jokes in the Japanese version... Ok but leaving that aside I want to mention only one specific moment because in general the dynamic was the same: she flirts and jokes, he falls for it ect... But this scene was my favorite because this was literally a date.

So many things to say about this scene, first the romantic full moon night background, in Japan when someone says the "moon is beautiful tonight" Means "I like/love you", unfortunately none of them said anything like that but with all this is just plain obvious this was a romantic setting, Rouge was trying to get Knuckles to be emotional because she knows he misses Sonic and wanted him to think she is so caring and compassionate and give her jewels 😂 but he ends up being stubborn breaking the mood and accuses her to be the one who misses him making her angry and start a fight but after a while they see Sonic in the sky and Rouge says they look dumb and wonders why were they fighting for in the first place, Knuckles laughs at her messy face and THEN she playfully jumps on him and he says she is tickling him??????? Of course this part is conveniently out of camera and we can only hear whatever the hell they are doing 😂😏 but now think about it... What were they doing? She was on top of him on the floor under the moonlight tickling him.... AND NOTHING ELSE HAPPENED?? Yeah come on! I don't believe that 😏, we know Rouge doesn't waste time:

Boy that's an ugly ugly comic and speaking of comics, remembering the old Archie comics too... After that dark era where Rouge was a unfairly represented as a villainous cruel bitch 😤🤬 there was a reboot before the IDW reboot and finally my waifu got at least some justice! I just love this particular comic where she shows how she actually respects Knuckles and cares about him, she is someone who never gets attached too much to big responsibilities if that cuts her freedom, she values her freedom (something in common with Sonic) and she wanted Knuckles to have that kind of freedom too:

Look at her being a peacemaker between her boyfriend and brother 😆. Well anyway I hope Ian Flynn gets more freedom eventually because it's clear he is holding back in the current Sonic comics😭😭😭 (even made a joke with the love triangle 😂😂)

Let's give it time... They managed to put some furry lesbians in the comic so anything is possible... I'll just wait forever 🥲🥲🥲🥲

And well we also got some good stuff in Sonic Prime!! 😍😍😍 we finally saw him carrying her bridal style in a angst situation 🤩🤩🤩 for a brief moment and from long distance camera shot but is still something 🥲🥲 just zoom it.

Paleo Pines Gameplay FAQs

WARNING: Spoilers under the cut

How do I get more Poppin flavours? If you've only unlocked Crunchy, you can unlock the next one by either feeding a Styracosaurus a Crunchy or you can talk to Mari after completing the taming tutorial and entering/exiting the Plaza. After that, the next one comes after you enter Dapplewood for the first time and then Pippin will have a quest every day/few days or so.

Are there any future content plans for the game? There are no current plans for more content. At the moment, we're bug fixing but we will add some commonly requested features too! If the game does well, we'd LOVE to make more!

Making money is hard, what are some good ways to do so? Doing quests from the town board is a good way to make money if you don't need the rewards!

Later on, growing higher star crops can sell for a lot and can become consistent - especially berry bushes/trees as they don't require watering/constant care!

How do I get turnips? Sometimes they can be rewards from quests, but Granny will sell the seeds if your friendship is high enough.

How do I get strawberries? Corlan can sell them and Granny will sell the seeds if your friendship is high enough.

How do I get forest wood? In Dapplewood; - Regular wood logs: - Path near stegos - Woods near treeceratops - Area around Agami's

Forest wood logs: - Theri area - Anky area - Troodon pond when drained - Log at the megalo area

Single forest wood: - Centro area - Stego area - Back of Deinocheirus area - Near treeceratops - Megalo area - Troodon pond (drained)

Can I cancel quests/requests? For now, no.

Can I cut down trees on my ranch? Marlo is the only person who can cut down mature trees (since they're important to the people of Paleo Pines) but we never quite managed to get that into the game. It's on our big list of would-be-nice-to-add features.

How do I blur distant objects/make text larger/add high contrasting text/adjust field of view? These are all available in the settings menu!

How do I split stacks? Look in the help menu- there are a lot of tips on sprinting/stack splitting and other control-specific instructions! (For example, on Xbox hold RT and press Aand the stack will split, hold RT and the 'up' on the dpad will bring across one thing at a time)

What do small dinos do? Our small dinos are tenders and discoverers!

For their discovery abilities, simply use your flute to ask them to follow you and go out in the wild- they will find wild collectables and signal to you that they've found something! (Plus all dinos love going for walks)

Tender abilities are unlockable by talking to a special NPC (Avery) in Pebble Plaza in Jurassos! Once you do quests for him, he'll give you some tools to help your smaller friends farm!

How do you get a sleeping patch to make a dreamstone? It's the other way around - sleeping patches are made by upgrading dreamstones, which you find hidden around the wilds. Marlo has an option to downgrade a sleeping patch back into a dreamstone in case you change your mind about which type you wanted, but most players won't need to use that.

How do I get a dino to trust me enough to be a helper? There are multiple ways to raise the happiness of a dino enough so they'll be a helper. It will take a few days before it is enough.

Make sure to feed the dino a treat they like Feed the dino their favourite poppin Take the dino on a walk to the zone they came from Pet their nose, Play their friend song, Keep their pen clean, Make sure their pen is the biome it likes, Try to match their social type- Make sure the dino has enough penmates (different kinds of dinos can share a pen as long as they like the same food!) Make sure they have enough food!

Remember: Some Dinos can take a while to become your helper- as long as you're consistent and checking on them, you'll be on the right track! But not all dinos will become helpers in 2-3 days! How do I change the biome of a pen? Either by changing 2 dreamstones to a biome or by placing at least 3 of a decor type inside the pen!

How do I know what kind of Biome my dino wants? If you use your journal on them, usually it will say what kind they want!

How do I take my dino for a walk? Yoohoo the dino with your flute, then ask it to follow you and then walk to wherever you want to go! You can have three dinosaurs follow you at any one time (or 4 if you count one as your steed).

What does social type mean? It's the amount of Dinos in one pen. Loner type dinos only want to be by themselves. Pack dinos like to be in a pen with 2 to 3 other dinos. Herd dinos want lots of friends, preferably 3+!

I have lots of herd dinos in a pen but it says the pen is too small! You can check the journal for a dinos minimum preferred space, each dino wants that amount of space so if you have 3 dinos who want 20 minimum space, then your pen should be 60 minimum. You can open your journal by the gate to see how big your pen is!

What kind of Poppin/Treat does X dino like? Check out paleo.gg! It looks great and has a lot of information on each dino, including their favourite flavours of treat/Poppin!

How many dreamstones are there? There are enough dreamstones for one of each of every dino plus a handful more- in exact, there will be 45 Dreamstones. You can swap large dreamstones for small dreamstones (and vice versa) from Archeo Pelago in Ariacotta Canyon

Where are the tablet fragments?

What's the last Veridian Dino?

“why did greg betray tom in the finale after batting for him all of season 4″ he didn’t. next question

longer answer: he didn’t bc betrayal implies he specifically did what he did to implicate tom in some way. if we look at characters’ motives in succ most of them are driven by self preservation. what can this do for me, how can this raise me higher, how can this save me, what can i use for leverage etc etc and fuck everybody else in the process. tg subvert this frequently, but a very important example of greg both surviving and avoiding pure selfishness/protecting tom is in the finale, and to ignore that is actually ignoring how different it was to his previous moves re: telling gerri. when he told gerri, and gerri approached tom, this was a situation that only involved tom so it was a direct “betrayal” so to speak. in the finale, greg did not give tom’s name to ken, despite knowing how juicy that morsel would be to him. he knows ken, he knows shiv, he knows the situation between them, he knows tom and shiv’s situation, he knows it all, and he knows that ken would love something he could use to undermine shiv just that little bit more. tom is the father of shiv’s child - ken knowing that tom is the pick for ceo would absolutely put greg in more favour with him because he could use that so much more. tom would be an excellent tool for ken to wield against his sister, not only bc it would shake her, but bc he could use him to forge a stronger alliance with her. previously he has said he’s got her back against tom, offered to kill him etc, so it would be a perfect opportunity to not just rattle her, but gain her loyalty by having a common enemy. greg knows this for sure, we’ve seen him directly go against shiv with ken in america decides yet he still did not mention tom in the finale. this tracks with his behaviour throughout season 4, where he has sang tom’s song, thrown others under the bus to protect tom’s name and redirect fire on him to others, taken care of tom’s basic needs etc. he made a mistake, and it’s been said many times that he’s a very fear based kind of guy. he was afraid. tom was being cagey, extremely shakey with phrases like “i think” and “castrated/decimated on pay”. he wasn’t showing any appreciation or knowledge for greg’s efforts because he was so blinded by his own attempts to secure greg, status, and the stress and absolute lack of sleep as well as ofc his unprocessed trauma of being with logan when he died, so greg’s natural response was to gravitate to someone who might be able to protect him, a blood relation, and the one who has been the nicest to him [which isn’t even saying that much lol] of all of them, and the one he hasn’t burned bridges with. it wasn’t a betrayal, it was a fear response, and his frustration and not being recognised for his efforts in taking care of tom probably was a part of his reaction to tom cuffing him over the head in the bathroom. FUCK you for getting mad at me, i know i fucked up but i’m trying to help you goddamnit! i’ve been helping you all this time! i love you you idiot!!!

‘The Gaze,’ Love and Happiness.

Based on some comments I’ve seen, be it twitter or tumblr or even reddit, I get the impression that some people struggle to understand the different forms love can take and the variables that shape how that love is expressed; this is especially visible when it comes to Kazuki and Rei. ‘The Gaze’ as I’ll call it, has led to a lot of discussion around Kazuki and his new-found happiness — more specifically, what it means and who it pertains to. People seem to believe that this happiness excludes Rei because Kazuki isn’t ‘in love’ with him like he loved Yuzuko. Therefore, the only thing making Kazuki happy now, is Miri, for whom he can express parental love.

And make no mistake, Miri (ball of sunshine in her cute little platypus raincoat and singing her cute little song that I might have played-back multiple times) is making Kazuki happy — you won’t see me argue that — but Rei was, and continues to, make Kazuki happy too…Kazuki doesn’t need to be ‘in love’ with Rei to be happy with him…

When people remove Rei from having influence on Kazuki’s happiness, and make him just a tool for Kazuki’s coping at the loss of Yuzuko, it reduces the significance and importance platonic relationships can have on a person, mentally and emotionally; as if these relationships have less meaning and subsequently, less influence on a persons decisions and beliefs. Beyond that, this line of thinking takes away Kazuki’s ability to make rational, well thought decisions, and he becomes very one-dimensional. It essentially reduces his happiness down to ‘being a parent’ and it’s not just about being a parent for him. Kazuki’s original desire and original hope was rooted in raising a child with someone he cared about. And so when people question Rei’s significance or importance to Kazuki’s happiness simply because Kazuki isn’t ‘in love’ with Rei in the romantic sense of the word, it ignores Kazuki’s ability to understand himself and his general upset about his ability to move on and the reality that relationships do grow and mature from where they started.

Miri forces Kazuki to acknowledge he is happy, and has been happy despite not wanting to be. Miri forces him to accept and acknowledge the permanence of what he’s established and that he likes it. Liked it enough to bring a child into it and has settled into it so much so, that he wants it to mature and grow. Rei might not have forced Kazuki to acknowledge these things, but they were very obviously already there, lurking under the surface.

It wasn’t that Kazuki found Miri and wanted to raise her and Rei just so happened to be there — Rei was always there, already there, and Kazuki decides to keep her anyway. He doesn’t make the decision in a vacuum with solely himself in mind. Every decision he makes regarding Miri is stemmed with the word ‘we’. Kazuki never assumes this is going to be a one person job. And it’s not like Rei is some foreign entity to him. Kazuki knows who Rei is, his strengths, his weaknesses, his faults, and still chooses to co-parent with him. Hopeful like any new parent, that their partner will mature into the role and they will learn and grow together.

Let’s keep it clear and simple: Kazuki is a grown ass man. If he just wanted to be a parent, with no happiness attached to his co-parent, and solely for the sake of ‘raising a child’ he has options. He’s an attractive man who makes a lot of money (albeit illegally) — he could find a woman to have a child for him. It’s not so far-fetched that maybe, potentially, subconsciously, Kazuki was more willing to keep Miri because he’d be raising her with someone he was familiar with and yes, happy with.

Sure, ep. 7 highlighted that they weren’t on the same page about everything, but that’s just life for new parents. You’re not always aligned on everything. RONAN and ADAM and... ETHEL CAIN

(trust me its gonna be so good)

My thoughts on “crush” by Ethel Cain and The Raven Cycle (because my niche right now is rereading the raven cycle for the first time in 4 years and I just happened to see Ethel live and I cannot stop connecting them)

As a prelude to my lyric/quote breakdown… Ethel Cain is a trans woman who writes hauntingly beautiful music.. She is religious and from the south, which is a HUGE part of why it is so undeniably apparent to me that she can be connected to specifically RONAN (gay catholic from the south with his barn house). Her music is so amazing and she is an awesome story teller so I hope you give her a listen.

Her most popular song CRUSH is so goddam Ronan and Adam I had to write this because I needed to put it somewhere.

Yes Kavinsky and Ronan’s relationship is very hard to define but whatever it is he takes up a lot of his time in dream thieves.. And he loves coke (or whatever the hell he dreamt up)… and Ronan is VERY BAD at saying no when it comes to any sort of challenge from Kavinsky.

OK NOW LETS GET INTO THE GOOD STUFF

ADAM is like oblivious to the legitimacy of his feelings until ronan gives him a little kissssss and then it's like he is all like “what is love”

A: Belos wanted him to stick around and so he made it happen. As for specifics: *shrugs* your guess is as good as mine! This is something I've preferred to leave up to the readers. I will simply confirm that he isn't hiding any goop powers or OP palisman-given magical abilities. He is, for all intents and purposes, a regular human who is somehow really, really old.

Q: If Caleb is still alive, where did Hunter come from?

A: The full story here hasn't been told yet, but you may notice Caleb is missing quite a few bones...

Q: Caleb's ears are pointed! Did Belos cut them??

A: Correct

Q: Does Caleb know about the Collector/the basilisks/Belos' plans?

A: Probably! He's been Belos' sounding board for 400 years. Access to things that could "further corrupt him" or provide him a tool for escape, however, are off limits, so there are many things, like the Collector, that he's heard about but never seen for himself.

Q: Where's Flapjack/Amity/Darius/etc?

A: This is basically a canon divergence. If you haven't seen a particular character, it's safe to assume for now that they're up to whatever they were doing in canon.

Q: I don't get it. Why is Caleb insane?

A: I suggest you reread the first few story posts, my friend! You have fallen for Belos' lies.

Q: Do you have a posting schedule? When will the next part come out?

A: There is no posting schedule. I draw (mostly but not always) traditionally in my free time, for the fun of telling a cool story, and some posts are longer than others. That means the timing of the next post depends on how long it is, how much time I have, and whether or not I'm at home with access to my scanner. Sometimes this means I post quickly. Sometimes it means you'll see me next month. Sorry about that.

Just know that if I know there's going to be an extended wait, especially one where I'm not actively working on the next drawing, I will make an announcement about it. If you haven't seen an update in a while but I also haven't said anything, it's almost definitely because I'm actively chipping away at a part of the story that's taking me longer.

Q: Why do some of the story posts have a letter after the number? Are these less important than the regular story posts? Can I skip them?

A: No, I Do Not Recommend skipping them! They are just as important as the others. They have a letter on the end because they were added later and I use letters as a way to avoid renumbering everything. If you see story posts labeled something like "3, 3A, 4", they are meant to be read the same as you would if they were "3, 4, 5".

Q: Can I make art/fic/cosplay of this au?

A: Knock yourself out! If you post it somewhere, please include credit, but otherwise I don't mind, and actually love seeing what you do with it! If it's NSFW though, please keep it in appropriate spaces with proper warnings.

i struggle a lot with motivation, when i force myself to do things, it just doesn't feel right, and i feel so guilty about it, things like going to school or even brushing my teeth, it's all pointless and physically exhausting

anyway, any tips for folks with low motivation?

Hello, love! Thank you for your patience. Motivation is such a common struggle. I use some unconventional study and motivation tactics personally, as someone with ADHD and Dyslexia I have to get through a lot of nonsense to do basic things. First, you are not lazy! The idea today of laziness is very frustrating to me, and I feel is built on capitalist (and white supremacist) ideals. See the NAP Ministry.

According to The (USA) National Library of Medicine, "Executive dysfunction is commonly seen in major depression. The types of executive deficits seen in depression include problems with planning, initiating, and completing goal-directed activities." Anyone struggling with depression, whether an episode or long-term can struggle with these basic tasks. So how can we deal with this?

Some different techniques that may help:

Talk through the tasks you need to do out loud. You can discuss them in linear order or not. Don't focus on making them perfect and detailed, just explain it like you would to a friend.

Explain what you are doing as if someone is watching you/you're teaching someone. This is how I motivate myself when studying/working out/etc. and shows you that you do know what you are doing.

Break tasks down into smaller pieces to help them be more manageable, or simplify the ones that seem too complicated. (For this I need to do x, then y, then z. I don't need to overthink brushing my teeth, it's okay to just go do it.

Ask someone to be your accountability buddy. Body doubling/parallel play can be very useful. I ask my partner to brush his teeth with me so I have someone else there.

Accept that you don't need to do 100% of everything. You can't brush, floss, and use mouthwash? Okay brush for even just thirty seconds, it's better than nothing!

Utilize tools, but don't try to make it fancy. Aesthetics can be helpful and motivating, they can also apply pressure to make everything look good. Google Calendar or a messy notebook is good enough.

Surrounds tasks with cushioning time to relax. Even for little tasks, you can promise yourself rest before and after. Likewise, do enjoyable things during arduous tasks. Watch a silly video, playa. song!

Consider what the biggest obstacle is. Does it feel pointless? Do you want to do it? If not, why not? How can you change what is making you avoidant? If you do want to, what feels like it's stopping you? A specific fear? Or an impenetrable wall? These questions help define the next steps.

Accept you cannot do everything, especially not when you are suffering. You deserve help and it's okay to ask for it. Professional help is important when conquering issues with motivation whether from depression, ADHD, etc. Medications, therapy, and more can improve your mood.

Some tools I use:

Brushout - An app to help you brush your teeth for the right amount of time. Simple, and makes a nice dinging sound. Can be added as a widget to your home screen on iPhones.

Google Calendar - Also simple. Easy to click and add events and get reminders for things creeping up on you.

Mnemosyne Notebook - Ok the brand doesn't matter but the paper in this is so smooth and it makes me want to use it. But yes a notebook to organize thoughts.

Little Treats - I like to keep little snacks and treats around for working on things I have been struggling with. You don't have to wait until after, let yourself fuse joy with your efforts.

You do not need to be ashamed for struggling. No matter the reason or the manner, we all go through difficult things. Reach out, and don't give up. Feel free to ask for more information or advice again.

Okay, I'm always interested in learning more about 'but you're talking in your sleep'. Obviously lvjy song and the mc's/your interest in literature are two important story details. How did you decide to intertwine those? Like, did you read you are jeff and decide to make a fic off of it, or did was it the songs that inspired it? Why did you decide to do both? Idek if this makes sense, tbh. But I'd love to know your though process, in general, regarding that fic.

oh YO this is perfect I love you im gonna ramble for a bit !!

also context; read but you're talking in your sleep (Wilbur/Sister-Innit!Reader)

So initially I was hyperfixated on Pebblebrain when it came out (weren't we all) and my song flavour was Oh Yeah, You Gonna Cry? and the very first idea I had was about the reader and Wilbur being best friends and former FWB after the reader starts dating a fuckboi, which I realised I've already kind of talked about here, but I'm happy to reiterate that the line 'say my name in her sleep/i thought you knew her better than me' and Wilbur just being the cockiest motherfucker without a shred of self awareness that he is very in love with the reader and that's the main reason he hates her boyfriend (who is also just a tool).

the idea to intertwine the lvjy and specifically siken is so unbelievably self indulgent; he's my favourite poet and has been for years, and Litany In Which Certain Things Are Crossed Out has been my favourite poem for a very long time. as for You Are Jeff, i can't remember exactly, but I think I saw the first few lines of the last stanza in like a webweave while I was looking for inspiration and I realised 'you're in a car with a beautiful boy, and he won't tell you he loves you, but he loves you' is the most precious, perfect summary of reader & wilbur's dynamic in the fic. this was also the basis of the part of the reader's characterisation where they always used allusions/implications/other people's words when they were afraid of speaking the truth. a few of these moments that i want to point out;

the first one is of course Do I Wanna Know?

literally all of the lyrics for this song. i tried to pick a few but holy shit all of this song -- the first time the song's mentioned when it's Y/N's karoke choice and then immediately calling Wilbur right after they'd chosen it I think the key lyrics are; 'Have you no idea that you're in deep? / I've dreamt about you nearly every night this week / How many secrets can you keep? / 'Cause there's this tune I found / That makes me think of you somehow an' I play it on repeat / Until I fall asleep, spillin' drinks on my settee

the second time the song is mentioned is when Y/N and Wilbur go out to a pub with his flatmates in brighton and she starts humming it when they head to his bedroom, and it's just the whole second verse; So have you got the guts? / Been wonderin' if your heart's still open / And if so, I wanna know what time it shuts / Simmer down an' pucker up, I'm sorry to interrupt / It's just I'm constantly on the cusp of tryin' to kiss you / I don't know if you feel the same as I do / But we could be together if you wanted to

the one that personally might break my fucking heart that Y/N is very familiar with Jubilee Line, which is already a fucking bleak song especially since she lives in London, and later has some implications about how if she didn't leave London she was going to jump in front of a train, but there's a little moment in the first chapter when she's on the phone with Wilbur right before she decides to come visit him -- “I’m everywhere. My mind’s everywhere. The walls shout back, I didn’t realise they could do that, or start the argum- I’m not making sense. I’m sorry.” -- it's such a blink and you'll miss it allusion but she's making a point to hide the truth she knows about Mark and her relationship by reference Jubilee Line and the lyrics 'shout at the walls because the walls don't fucking love you'.

In the final part, when Wilbur comes to pick up Y/N from the french cafe, and she's quietly moved by how much he cares about her in a way other people in her life seem not to -- before turning and beaming at him, thanking him again for coming all this way, adding that he didn’t need to worry; ‘no cause for concern’ is how you worded it, deliberate. -- Because 1) 'We ain't gonna hurt you' but also, as much as there is a more romantic final chorus to that song, she is also like 'you could knock the wind out of my breath / you could knock the teeth out of my head / and still it's no cause for concern' like she loves this boy who drove to another country for her, he can do whatever he wants forever in her books.

and one other one off the top of my head is the fact that the name she'd hidden Wilbur as in her phone is Pandora as a reference to the text conversation when they'd reconnected, yes, but also because He Gives Her Hope.

and now, on this already long post, im going to talk about the lovejoy lyrics that were "inspired" by Y/N in the fic (when its really the other way around)

Sex Sells gets an in-canon one; But the song he’d written about how Mark doesn’t love you he just loves that you’re his, that you hate him but you keep going back to him for reasons Wilbur still doesn’t fully understand, and now on top of it all you know that Wilbur can’t stop fucking thinking about it, about you, even when he’s trying to sleep? It’s accurate, and everything tastes like ash in his mouth for several bitter moments. How’d it go again? How’s it feel to be so loved, yet so alone? He’s got his answer, can hear it in your sobs as you sit on the steps of your boyfriend’s apartment two hours away.

So lets go through Pebblebrain

Oh Yeah, You Gonna Cry? is obviously a huge one lol, with a lot of what i drew Fucking Mark from;

You got the same eyes as your father / And you carry the same kind of temper too / But what a shame for the people of the community -- which ties directly in with another of the songs i'll get to, and this line from a flashback; “It’s a good school, though, I’m glad I got in, and Mark, he’s- he’s really sweet. It’s brave of him to move, even though I’m on campus and he’s not; none of his family’s lived outside of Nottingham for generations,” the face you’re making is close to a smile, to anyone else they might mistake it as such, but there’s a wrinkle in the bridge of your nose, a tightness at the edge of your smile, “he’s training to go into the same line of work as his dad, he’s just glad he can do it here,” you laugh, but there’s no humour in it.

But I quite like your girlfriend! / How the fuck 'd she end up with you? -- i think this speaks for itself

And she told me that she fuckin' hates you -- regarding the moment; Later, he’ll ask the question that’s been plaguing him, ask if you even like your boyfriend. Later, you’ll be wrapped up in his sheets, stretched out on his bed as your whole face scrunches like you’ve bitten a lemon, and he’ll have no idea what you mean when you tell him that that hasn’t mattered in a very long time.

the whole song is about Mark in this fic. the whole song. i love it so much.

Model Buses could also be arguably about Mark in some respects but I've held myself back from putting that thought into the fic.

I don't think Concrete has any real connections to the fic either, however.......

PERFUME, BAYBEEEEEEE

in the context of the fic, it's written mostly after the reader goes home from brighton after their affair with wilbur where they're clearly in love with each other and he's struggling to deal with that in a healthy way by writing the song. i could add analysis for LITERALLY EVERY LINE but i wont. just know it's all Y/N

It's 3:45 (AM) / And I just bite my tongue / Update me on your life / And now you've found the one / But I don't like his eyes -- hence his building almost resentment whenever they call him when drunk and insisting that mark's not as bad as he seems

And I can still smell her perfume -- because it's on his damn pillows.

You say your ex-boyfriend's a policeman / Well, I say you need better standards -- you remember how i said a line in OYYGC links to another song, well it's this, now, because with Y/N talking about Mark training to go into the same field as his dad, we also get this reveal, despite not drawing attention/connecting it to the earlier mention of Mark's chosen career being the same as his dad's; “Mark’s dad’s been chief of police in our town for as long as I can remember,” Tommy says with a sigh.

Why can't you be a dick? / Why must you be so nice? / It's hard for me to move on / When I don't really hate you / (I don't really hate you) -- this one's a lot of things, it's Wilbur fully acknowledging that he should not be cool with Y/N cheating emotionally and physically on her partner but still making peace with it despite the turmoil the situation has caused him. it's also him kind of frustrated at how despite Y/N rightfully calling him out for writing such a spiteful song as Sex Sells, they didn't take it as badly as they could have, and so he acknowledges that he doesn't actually believe what the song is saying about them. it's ALSO a deliberate echo of this moment; “I wish I could hate you more for this, but I don’t,” you mumble, soft and a little forlorn, heart not in your words as his aches. He should have kept that song to himself, like his gut had told him to.

You'll Understand When You're Older is an interesting one because I appreciate the actual meaning of the song a lot, but i also like adding my own to it, so the context here is it's half inspired by the Y/N situation and half by current events;

It must be nice to be the reason / His work, it ain't so bleak / That must be what motivates you -- there's spite here as he considers how little Mark appreciates Y/N and her love and kindness, with the veiled implication of 'if Wilbur were in Mark's situation these lyrics would be sincere'.

and finally, in the fic, a lot of the lyrics and vibes were completed not too long after Y/N and Wilbur reconnected, before Are You Alright was even released, but Wilbur will never in his life (in this fic lol) admit that It's All Futile! It's All Pointless! was a heartbreaking hybrid of his own feelings/experiences, and kind of who Y/N had become in the two years since they'd seen each other, also what he had seen a little bit of after she reconnected with Mark when she and Wilbur had first met, while wilbur still tries to act like he's not in love with her. but it is, and he is.

Anordil: So, like, it's not just good manners to give people a gift if they give YOU a gift?

Elrond, patiently, surreptitiously pouring himself a glass of wine: Little things, like food yes. Midwinter and Midsummer gifting. NOT highly specific thoughtful gifts out of season that require personal crafting or large amounts of money.

Anordil, squinting at the very fancy quill she's bought Erestor: Ah. Um. What about all the jewelry your Feanorians keep sneaking into the dressing table in my rooms?

Elrond, shaking his head: OUR Feanorians, I'm afraid. They're very firm about that. Those are about Noldorin propriety, and affection, but not courting. They're not giving them to you in person or with a signed letter or note. They've given you some with your father's sigal, but never with any of their own.

Anordil, perking up a little: So wait, you have to STATE intention? I didn't do that!

Elrond: You absolutely did.

Anordil: I DID NOT-

Elrond: You went with them on over a dozen outings. You accepted flowers from them both and gave them some in return. You let Glorfindel put them in your hair. (note: In Mandos Feanor threw a fit right then and there about the audacity and impropriety, bet you! XDDD)

Anordil: Wait, no where do the FLOWERS fit in! I thought this was about GIFTS.

Elrond, pained: Anordil. Flowers are a gift. A light sweet, i like you opening courting gift. They're common enough, and don't HAVE to mean romance, true, but then you gave Erestor INKSTONES. And Glorfindel that tooled leather pouch. And then you accepted books and boots.

Anordil: Auuuughhh *poor human turned elf who's love language is gift giving* *whimpers and slides into a puddle of elf under the table*

Elrond, bending to regard her, gently: If you truly do not wish their attention in this way, I can talk to them.

Anordil, muffled face first in the rug: I didn't say that. I just- are you sure? They're THEM and I'm ME? Why would they- (Anordil in no way sees herself clearly. At all.)

Elrond: *suddenly realizes his sister has a few more issues than he thought she did*

Anordil: okay but like, here is the thing! I do like them! I like them a lot! But I am me and they are them!

Elrond: I have it on record they like you too

Anordil: that makes literally no sense! I’m *vague gestures at herself*

Elrond: *slowly coming to the conclusion that being away from other elves and anyone who could appreciate her skills for the past three to four thousand years might have fucked his sister up* Anordil, sister dear, why wouldn’t they like you?

Anordil: did you not just see me gesture to all of me? Do you not see how pretty they are? How skilled they are at like, everything? All I do is make songs and weave. If anything they deserve someone who can keep up with them!

Elrond: you can keep up with them. You do keep up with them. You think I don’t see those little glances exchanged between the three of you during defence meetings? You’re just as important as they are.

Anordil: I don’t believe you

Elrond: will you talk to them at least?

Anordil: I don’t think I have a choice in that. I’m going to have to talk to them sooner or later.

*later*

Anordil: *attempting to be cheerful* so turns out I may have missed some important parts of cultural education while the continent was sinking!

Erestor: if you don’t return our favor-

Anordil: oh no, I do. I like you two a lot. Don’t know why on earth you two would like me but I like you two well enough.

Glorfindel: what? Why wouldn’t we like you?

Anordil: *gestures at all of her* there is nothing special to be found here. In fact I am - in case you haven’t noticed - a bit of an asshole.

Erestor and Glorfindel share a Look.

Anordil: *cheerfully continuing on* anyway. Here are some apology gifts - the hair clip is for Glorfindel and the fancy quill is for Erestor.

Erestor: to be clear, you like us? And are willing to continuing the courting process?

Anordil; *very glad she’s dark enough that the heat in her cheeks doesn’t show* yes. I do like you. Both of you. A lot. And now that I know it’s happening I would like to. Continue it. If that’s okay.

Glorfindel: good. I did buy you another pair of shoes - don’t give me that look you need at least two pairs!

Anordil: I have two pairs!

Glorfindel: you have one working pair - the one I gifted you- and the other pair from your travels that you refuse to take apart and reuse or toss them. You need another pair.

Anordil: *looks at erestor for help*

Erestor; *smiles* that reminds me that one of your fëanorians is looking for you. They said something about a winter solstice dress.

Anordil: ….but I’ve gone to that event before? What’s wrong with my other dresses?

Glorfindel: we’re going together arent we? We should at least all match.

OH I really need your opinion about Louis being so emotionally intelligent, I think it's barely even talked about it here

ARE people not talking about it? What a funny thought! As a post-hiatus fan, I'm accustomed to thinking of myself as something of a newcomer, even though it's been years now, so it's weird to realize I've been here long enough to see patterns and trends come and go and come again. It's even weirder the way trends in fandom can be completely forgotten and erased when the boys, in contrast, eternally exist in all times at once, everything they've ever said considered to be equally valid to their current lives whether they said it 12 years ago as teens or just yesterday as whole ass adult men! Anyway my point is, there was certainly a time when Louis' emotional intelligence was discussed a lot, AS IT SHOULD BE. For sure so much when Walls came out it was... those LYRICS!! Yes, without that gift he's still gorgeous and smart and embodies a unique and bewitching gender presentation and has a beautiful and captivating singing voice… I guess there are a lot of other reasons people might like him. But to me the thought of that not being the top of anyone's "why Louis" list is bananas, it feels so absolutely central and necessary to understanding what makes him special!

It's certainly a lot of what makes his songs resonate with people- he's a skillful lyricist, he could craft clever little twists of phrase and metaphors regardless, but it's his emotional intelligence that sets him apart imo. He describes it as honesty, and yes- the willingness to be vulnerable and reveal your feelings is special, but what I don't know if he even really realizes is that for so many people it's not just an unwillingness to open up honestly like he does, it's that they are genuinely unable to identify and understand and name what's happening inside them like that. I think it comes so naturally to him that maybe it can be hard for him to recognize that that experience isn't universal.

I really appreciate that you used the words emotional intelligence specifically, I love that phrase; I think framing it as a form of intelligence is correct and important. It's a skill set that is dismissed as "feminine" and so less important or easier to access than intellectual intelligence, but it's none of those things. And it's a minority of people who, like Louis, are both intellectually and emotionally very very sharp. I'd say it's a reason he was been able to stay such a good person in the face of things that can easily ruin people (being rich and famous from a young age, trauma and loss), and it's certainly what enables him to be so good at his job. It elevates his songwriting above the ordinary, but also it gives him the tools to do the dance of giving the public something to connect with and making it feel like he's completely open and present without actually giving away too much, which would be absolutely impossible without emotional intelligence- if you don't know your own boundaries or can't intuit on the fly what people respond to, it simply falls flat and seems forced. We've been seeing him exercise those skills close up and in person over the last few days in the signings, making everyone feel special and held and like they got a personal special moment without actually telling anyone anything much or going overtime or getting sucked in to any weird interactions! Again, something that would be nearly impossible without those kind of people skills.

It's actually really funny the way the discourse recently (speaking of changing tides in fandom) has been focused on the idea of Louis presenting himself as masculine (is there a relationship between that and the lack of chat about his EI? hm), when I feel like in the past he was the most feminized by fandom, and not because of his mannerisms or look, but because of his willingness to embrace his emotional intelligence- to cry/ talk about crying openly, to share readily about his feelings and be vulnerable, all these things coded as feminine. He himself has said that he doesn't think he's anything special in this regard (or especially feminine, I think is part of the subtext to that) because Northern Brit men are just like that. I'm from the US so I'm not the one to really respond to that, but it seems to me that does contain some truth- I have seen a willingness to cry openly, to talk about vulnerabilities, etc, in other men with public personas from up there- but I think that again, what we're saying is that's he's showing more than just that, that we're talking about his emotional intelligence quotient being unusually high, which is not a regional characteristic, but a personal one.

I love the idea that you just randomly were like EXCUSE ME THIS IS WHAT I NEED TO KNOW RIGHT NOW #no reason it JUST IS #This is really gushy but I don't think Louis is perfect- he does some things that suggest emotional immaturity #which is unsurprising given his situation (royalty who hasn't HAD to grow up)#(honestly since long before he was famous so he was very ready to embrace that role for life when the time came)#but the point is not that he's the perfectly evolved emotional paragon: it's that he's highly emotionally intelligent #which means he has tools that not everyone does and I love what he does with that and how he expresses himself #I'm not actually criticizing when I say he's somewhat immature- I'm envious #We should all be sheltered and allowed to remain immature in some ways honestly #I don't want him to have that taken away I just wish that privilege for more of us #blah blah blah

About Youth Eps 5 & 6 Stray Thoughts

It's time for the prettiest boys of the year.

I do love these little letters at the beginning.

Oh good, we're starting with Ray and (goes to MDL because I swear they never say his name) Jian.

I will always go feral for gay people taking pictures together in photo booths. It's an important part of our cultural history, and the young people should continue it.

Jian assuring Ray he can fix the broken jewelry feels so important. We all do unintentional harm all the time, but it's more important that we make amends than that we never make mistakes. Love this show.

The intro for this song is a bop. I like it.

Damn, the enthusiasm Ye Guang had completely drained out of him as he prepared to go back home.

Sharing headphones, my beloved trope. The private intimacy in public gets me every time.

Mmm, what's Jian's hesitation going into this first kiss? Ah he's not entirely ready, and now Ray is embarrassed.

Aww, and now Ray is hurt that Ye Guang won't tell him about Xu Qizhang.

Ye Guang can't even have a cute little date with Qizhang because of his overbooked parental schedule.

Gosh, this is terrible. We don't need to put them much pressure on students.

Is the reason Ye Guang didn't want to tell Ray about Qu Qizhang that he didn't want Ray's encouragement? He knows his parents will oppose him, so he won't make it more real?

I absolutely love this outro song. I can't find it on Spotify yet, but it will become a regular listen.

On to episode 6!

This dynamic with the band members almost reminds me of Given.

I suppose Qizhang is older than Guang? I did really enjoy his conversation with Ray.

Oh no here come the overbearing parents again. Tracking Guang and making him feel worse when he's already so dutiful feels cruel.

It's interesting seeing Taiwan deal with parents. Every time the prospective partner tries apologize for the parents. It's a very specific expression of filial piety that Taiwan seems to want to grapple with the most.

Oh, this is sad. I don't think Guang should have said that, but I like Qizhang not pushing back.

I love Qizhang's mom. She knows something's up, but is gonna let her son determine when to share.

BL boys are always so tall that they don't fit on beds.

The dad is a hypocrite in the worst way. I am growing to truly despise him.

I love Mama Xu so much. She's really great at dealing with these boys. Love a character effectively laying out communication tools.

God, I want these noodles. I'm so hungry.

Oh, I really enjoyed seeing these two make up. That was lovely.

favorite thing about them: waaahhhh so much. god i love zane. his character arc is so so good. His dub voice is I think my single favorite dub voice so far ( a high honor; I love a lot of the dub voices!!), I love how he can go from mumbling to a snarling roar in an instant. I love his Hell Kaiser design, I love the way the show storytells through his deck and how he plays it. He's also in my Single Favorite GX Duel so I think that counts as a Favorite Thing.

least favorite thing about them: genuinely trying to think about. what my least favorite thing about him is. hm. I do adore dub zane but it's a shame a lot of his relationship with respect re: dueling and himself and others got cut in order to play up a little bit of a "edgy mid-2000's tough guy bully older brother" characterization with him in the dub; the respect thing is such an important part of his character and it sucks to lose that!!

favorite line: sorry theyre all dub lines but "CYBER END DRAGON.... IT'S BEEN REAL" *EXPLOSION* still makes me go absolutely insane and "he's got one" re: jaden desperately telling him that he cant go, that syrus needs a big brother, literally makes me start crying. Also special shoutout to the fact that the dub specifically had zane tell syrus he loves him on two separate occasions!!!! That's so dear to me. Sub wise I do also love "I don't need an assistant" re: yubel being like 'i'll help you down on your way to hell.' he just goes hard.

brOTP: his bond with syrus is my single favorite yugioh siblings dynamic and every time i think about them im just like ;__; aauuaaghhhwwaahhhh......could talk about them. for ages. I also love his friendship with Jaden and Alexis!!! Zane Truesdale has Three Whole Little Siblings!!!!!!!!! I know and see the truth!!!!!
