Getting to know you tag game

Kiitos and tack to @sflow-er for tagging me! This was fun. Going to answer all my questions below. Maybe people will learn something new about me.

Do you make your bed?

No. It’s a loft bed so it’s sort of difficult to make, and no one sees it so there’s minimal incentive to do much with it. I mostly prefer to sleep in a nest of blankets.

What's your favourite number?

Nine. Odd numbers are fun and it’s three threes.

What is your job?

I don’t like to talk about it on tumblr, but it’s something in the education sector.

If you could go back to school, would you?

I am technically back at school at present, since I’m in a graduate program in writing part time. Honestly, I could just study forever and get paid to do so, without much extra strings attached, I would just go to university forever and major in a thousand different things while studying a thousand more.

Can you parallel park?

I cannot even drive, as it happens.

A job you had that would surprise people?

I used to work catering at my college, where I learned a lot about how to chop and prepare different vegetables and similar. The best thing about working catering was getting to take home leftovers. Also, chopping vegetables is a generally soothing thing for me to do when my anxiety is getting the better of me.

Do you think aliens are real?

Sure! Visiting earth seems unlikely (I mean why would you) but scientifically they have to be out there. I used to tell my mother I was an alien when I was a teenager.

Can you drive a manual car?

See above re: parallel parking. I think I’d be a lot more successful with a question about navigating city bus routes.

What's your guilty pleasure?

Hmm as I get older I am increasingly of the opinion that describing pleasures as “guilty” is something I’m too old and tired to do. Like, it would truly be not good for me to put food in this category. There’s also definitely favorite movies and books I have that I view with a cautious, critical eye (Lawrence of Arabia and Jane Eyre, for instance) but I don’t know if “critical consumption” and “indulging in guilty pleasures” are the same things. And I refuse to feel guilty for being an August and sargust enjoyer.

Like… I don’t know. Doll collecting? Is that a guilty pleasure? I currently wish my doll collection was making less a mess in my apartment.

Tattoos?

Not for me, but I’m glad for the people who like theirs.

Favourite colour?

Green, generally. For wearing, green again, as well as yellow and blue. (Or as I like to call them together, deconstructed green.)

Favourite type of music?

Gosh, hmm. I was going to say folk and progressive bluegrass, because a lot of stuff I like fits into that category already. (Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donavan, I’m With Her, Rhiannon Giddens, Jake Blount, etc.) If the songs are murder ballads or songs about shipwrecks or whatever (shout out to “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on the Punch Brothers album Hell on Church Street) all the better. I also realize I like a lot of music with classical/orchestral influences, but not necessarily like… traditionally classical. Today I’ve been listening to Kishi Bashi’s Omoiyari album on repeat and thinking about how Marigolds would make a great song for an ensemble YR fanvid.

I think my favorites will always be the artists who are absolute nerds for music and who will play with genre about it.

Do you like puzzles?

I don’t think I like puzzles, like they’re not always something I seek out, but I promise you that if you put a jigsaw puzzle or a logic puzzle in front of me I will hyperfixate until I figure it out. So I guess I like them.

Any phobias?

Mice. They like to come into my apartment when it’s cold. I would prefer they don’t.

Favourite childhood sport?

Gym class was the bane of my existence, but I also come from a sporty family, so I could kind of tolerate basketball for my athletic mother’s sake.

Do you talk to yourself?

Absolutely. When I was getting my neuropsych evaluation, the evaluator noticed that I was always talking myself through tasks in order to get them done. This is apparently what you need to do when you score 99th percentile on verbal intelligence but 2nd percentile on things like task initiation and executive function.

What movies do you adore?

I tend to be more of a TV and documentaries person than a movies person right now. That said, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and the 2005 Pride and Prejudice are good comfort watches, as is Pixar’s Luca. I really like the Georgian movie And Then We Danced.

Coffee or tea?

Tea. Specifically, green tea. Coffee is yummy (I like bitter things sometimes) but doesn’t play well with my health.

What was the first thing you wanted to be growing up?

I wanted to be a writer pretty early. That said, the earliest written record I have of “what do you want to be when you grow up” was a first grade assignment where we had to answer that question. The two jobs I named were teacher and artist, specifically an artist who paints murals. (I misspelled the word “mural” because in the Baltimore accent I grew up with, mural is essentially one slurred syllable. Make me say Aaron earned an iron urn, I dare you.)

Three ships: Kinn/Porsche, Wu Xie/Pangzi/Xiaoge, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan

First ever ship: Probably Howl/Sophie, also Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane. Alternatively, a slash pairing originally based on two playmobil people, who were two of the leads in a long fantasy narrative I was writing in my head (I had no internet and no queer media, and did not know that anything like fandom existed anywhere, so I consider this a good effort). First pairing I read fic about, many years later, was Spike/Xander.

Last song: hmm whatever was last up on my exercise playlist, which I think was Self Esteem, ‘The Best’. I recommend this song for playing an imaginary fanvid in your head about Thai mafia family members, as a distraction from the horrors of exercise. I recommend Self Esteem for being fantastic

Last movie: The Heihua movie (Mystery of the Abyss) in a watch party: a delightful rewatch.

Currently reading: not much other than fic and work-related stuff. However, I did read Nghi Vo’s The Chosen and the Beautiful just before the holidays and I LOVED it.

Currently watching: Catching up with Who Rules the World and enjoying it so far, started New Life Begins but not sold 3 eps in, also watching Through the Darkness (the profilers k-drama). Just gave up on Hu Ge and Qin Hao’s new development dramas. Much as I enjoy the regional development genre and a good dash of intrigue around factories and industrial stuff, not even two of my favourite actors could sell these very very dull shows. Now if only the two of them were in the same regional development drama.

Currently consuming: dark chocolate

Currently craving: red wine, which I could have but am trying to wait until Friday.

Hi, Fabi, I’m feeling lonely again.

There’s this feeling, and it’s not fun. It’s me realizing I’m putting back on all my labels and explanations about myself, which I had once thought was necessary, until I met you and realized no, no it wasn’t. It’s me being lonely again after thinking I would never be.

Before I met you I tried so so hard to market history to whoever would listen. And so I had fanvids, that I put eng subs and context on, that I would shove into people’s faces.

I made another one today, and at first it was just me doing something I’ve done before.

Until I saw my other ones, and realized the last one I did was from early 2021.

An year ago I was desperate and after a year has passed, I went full circle. I’m right back where I started.

If I’m right back where I started, what proof do I have that I once had you, and you lit up my soul and made me so happy and fulfilled?

It almost feels like that time period didn’t exist.

It’s day 12 of you saying goodbye, now. and 21 days since we last talked. 3 weeks.

Is it really just over, like this? You’re not just distant or out of reach, you’re gone. You’re not just a memory, because with most memories, there’s the chance of making it a future as well.

I need to learn that you are solely in the past. Though I wish to god you weren’t.

It feels like I’m speedrunning through the 5 stages of grief. Denial, first, when I made these letters as if I was still talking to you. Anger, when I started questioning why you did what you felt you had to do. Bargaining, when I started pleading for you to come back, begging for another chance. Am I in the depression stage, now? I feel like it’s most likely for me to cycle through the first 4 stages for the end of time, never reaching acceptance.

I keep thinking the reason why you’re completely gone is so that I can’t find you, but maybe I’m overestimating my influence and you’re really just having a shitty time in life.

You know they’re making an adaptation of this one Jane Austen book? I actually don’t know which one, I just remember people talking about how bad it was, and they brought up a quote from the original novel.

“Now they were as strangers; nay, worse than strangers, for they could never become acquainted. “

Dear Fabi, what I would sacrifice for us to be strangers. If you would at least treat me like a stranger, and I could work myself to death to see how I could earn your favour.

But, no, because I’ll never have that chance.

Maybe I’m still in denial, actually, because I still fantasize about coming across you 2 years later, and you’d be willing to talk to me.

I just want a word, a glance from you, so bad. I remember reading scum gong novels where the idiot gong goes running after the shou, doing anything possible to keep them around, even if they know that would just make the shou angrier.

That’s what I feel like, really. All my rational thoughts and guilt and idea of what is best for you get thrown out of my overwhelming desperation to see you again.

This is just going to be a ramble about everything Sherlock. You’re most welcome to discuss or just ignore it. I needed the space to vent.

I watched Sherlock. Again. I think it’s beginning to become my annual tradition. And I have a crisis. Don’t get me wrong, I am always Sherlollian at heart. It’s just… I have doubts sometimes. And what triggered those doubts this time was the fact that Sherlock calls Molly “John”. Twice. And then Irene Adler. And then one post on Tumblr. And many, many more.

OK, these are just my random thoughts. Enjoy if you’re willing to read them.

1. “John”. “Molly”.

We often mix up names of people we consider to have the same place in our lives. Which is good, right? Right. Only, in Sherlock’s case, we’d have lean into the theory that Sherlock does love John romantically and feels the same way about Molly. Or concede the fact that he loves them both platonically. Neither of these options is really satisfying, isn’t it? Well, that’s why I’m struggling… One could say he’s in denial of feelings for Molly and identifies them as friendship, as this is the strongest, purest relationship in his life, the only one he describes as emotional and the closest he’s ever had to love. Besides, Molly and John are similar in one way – they both share the same – medical – knowledge. Of course, Sherlock doesn’t realise her other qualities until The Reichenbach Fall when she says she can help him whenever he needs it. It’s not until she’s honest with him again and tells him, without a shred of grudge, that she knows she means nothing to him, that he realises he has at least two friends. He calls her “John” when his mind is busy with something else, so there’s no room for any purposeful confusion. The same thing happens in The Empty Hearse. What else can it mean if not friendship?

2. Nothing Hits Like Irene

Irene Adler is created as the love interest for Sherlock. Is she, though? Well, we see Sherlock utterly confused upon their first meeting. We also see him flirting and creating an atmosphere of sexual tension for the first time. OK, he saves her but then she vanishes, he got over her, I thought. And all was fine until The Lying Detective came and Irene Adler sent a text to Sherlock, first in such a long time. John, of course, suggests that if Sherlock should be romantically involved with anyone, it should be her. And then it hit me.

Irene Adler is the symbol of chemistry in Sherlock’s life.

She’s a dominatrix. She’s all about sex, that’s obvious. At the critical point of The Scandal in Belgravia Sherlock says: I believe John Watson thinks love’s a mystery for me but the chemistry is incredibly simple and very distractive. Sherlock discovers that he, indeed, can have chemistry with people. He doesn’t mention love, he merely says sentiment, referring to the crush Irene Adler had on him. She is, indeed, a simple distraction – you can see it clearly in his memory palace when he yells at her to get away. But Molly… Molly stays. She leads him through the entire process of surviving a shot.

And then Irene Adler returns in The Lying Detective. John confesses to Sherlock about texting with a stranger met on the bus. And that he wanted more. Sherlock says everyone gets to be human sometimes. Even he can’t resist the urge of replying to Irene Adler sometimes. It was all about attraction again.

And that’s why she’s not considered a romantic relationship in his life. John rambles about love changing him, to be more specific, the love of his woman changing him. But he says Irene’s a dangerous criminal. How would that change Sherlock in any way?

In The Final Problem, upon deducing the coffin, John suggests Irene Adler but she’s not his first thought in general once they all hear that this is about someone who loves Sherlock. Sherlock’s response is very telling: Don’t be ridiculous. Look at the coffin. It seems like Sherlock pieces the puzzle at once – the coffin, plus the “name” on the lid – it couldn’t have been Irene Adler.

And that’s why Sherlock calls her The Woman. As a symbol of his sexuality. The Woman who’s woken up certain impulses in his life.

3. Makeshift Gauge

Who is she?, Sherlock asks John in His Last Vow.

Based on what Mofftiss duo said about Molly, she was supposed to be featured in two episodes top. Yet, she stayed. The uncanonical character not only stayed but became fans’ favourite. I think she became a useful tool for Moffat and Gatiss. I think that not only she represents Sherlock heart (of which existence he has no idea at first) but later becomes our makeshift gauge. For what? For measuring Sherlock’s progress. See, it’s like when you live with someone, you don’t notice when they put on weight or grew a little but those who see less of them will notice all changes right away. So, when Sherlock runs around with John, we don’t notice the change in his behaviour at once (also because he’s always been nice to him, from the very beginning), we need to focus to see that. But Molly pops by once per episode and we see how Sherlock’s perception changes. In season one, he has good intentions, but they turn out bad. In season two, he’s more neutral but doesn’t restrain himself from rude comments. And Molly is being Molly – tells him he’s rude in her natural, soft way and he says sorry. For the first time. Without anyone making him do that. Almost the same happens in The Reichenbach Fall – but this time, Molly doesn’t let herself be fooled by Sherlock’s arrogance and just ignores it, going straight to the point. She says: “I’m here for you” and lowers his defences. In season three, he spends an entire day with her, smiles at her and is the sweetest, softest Sherlock we’ve ever seen. Moreover, when Lestrade asks him about her helping him solve cases, he says: [John] is not in the picture anymore, implying that she not necessarily had to be a temporary replacement. In season four, he says I love you to her.

What can we deduce about his heart?

4. The Eurus Conundrum

We could write an entire book about Eurus and not even be able to grasp her spirit. I’m not going to do that right now.

I have issues with what happened in season four finale. I mean – Molly, of course. Mycroft says Eurus and Jim Moriarty met five years ago, so before Moriarty revealed himself to Sherlock. They both planned the entire game for Sherlock. Does that mean Sherlock never really won with him? Does that mean Moriarty let him use Molly to “win”? Since she was included in Eurus’ plan, we can safely assume Jim knew about Molly back then. At first, when I saw Moriarty saying We both know that’s not quite true [that you don’t have a heart] in many Sherlolly fanvids, I was like naaaaah. He didn’t see her as one of the important people in Sherlock’s life, it couldn’t have been a reference to their meeting. But now… how deeply back in time was Eurus’ plan allocated? Which events did she predict?

Or maybe I’m missing something? Any thoughts on this?

5. Sherlock Evergreen

I once came across a post here, about how BBC Sherlock is literature, about sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s struggle with his own genius character. He was over with him, didn’t feel like writing any more of his stories so he killed him, but fans demanded more. He kept writing, although he hated it from the bottom of his heart. Season four, so often considered as the worst of all of them, is a way of saying that Sherlock character is, unfortunately, invincible. Immortal. He will live forever. We can’t kill him, no one can. Even his creator couldn’t have done it.

In season four, Sherlock goes back to the start. He is a clean slate again. He went through the entire process of change – became a good Sherlock, considerate of other people’s feelings and emotions, appreciative, supportive, loving, ready to mend what he broke. That interpretation, although very good, kind of killed my Sherlolly spirit. But I guess every interpretation like this would do it. If we stop treating characters like real human being, we’re left with what they really are – a construct, tools, puppets in the author’s hands.

Based on this, I think we’re safe to say there will never be a fifth season of BBC Sherlock (gosh, how I wish I was wrong!). Why? Because, despite what Moffat said in an interview once (after season three finale he said they’ve plotted out the entire fourth and fifth season – liar, liar, pants on fire!), season four had the perfect ending. As mentioned above, Sherlock became a good man and Mary Watson summed up what Sherlock is all about: two man, a genius junkie and a former soldier, who solve the weirdest, the toughest of cases together in flat on 221B Baker Street. Now, Sherlock is ready to be taken over by other artists who may find a new way to tell his story (though, I don’t think so) all over again.

And that’s a big, big shame… I think I speak for at least most of Sherlollians when I say we’d like to see Sherlock and Molly’s first encounter after the call. The finale really closed all the story arcs and subplots, except for this one. I mean, c’mon. You don’t have to be a Sherlollian to be annoyed by this – just remember that it was such a “biggie” that Moffat was asked about this in an interview. And this may be another reason as to why we won’t ever get a fifth season of Sherlock – because that would mean taking a side. And none of the creators will do it because Sherlock cannot be an open-and-shut case. It has to be like literature: big, open, twisted, unclear and full of room for interpretation. As long as there’s no certain explanation – yes, Sherlock loves Molly, no, Sherlock is gay – we create more and more content out of the need of closure. Thanks to the room for interpretation, the story lives. I mean, it’s been four years since The Final Problem airing and here I am, discussing BBC Sherlock still.

Coming back to Sherlolly… don’t worry. Though I’m still not sure that we can harvest any hard evidence for Sherlock’s feelings for Molly (other than friendship and respect), I’m still a Sherlollian. There two new fics waiting for me to pull myself together and write them. I think it’s good to have doubts – it means my brain hasn’t rotten yet and I can still be critical, I’m able of having my own opinions.

(Whatever fandom you want!) what's one thing you wish you could change that's deeply embedded in the fandom? And what's something positive that also seems to be at the core of the fandom?

oh oh oh, i hate the tendency of certain corners of fandom (especially on like...fan twitter which i try to avoid at all costs) to totally cross boundaries with actors and writers and crew members etc. like, yes, love the show, engage with the content creators when they actively encourage it, but like...there's no need to go harass some actor in the comments of like, an IG post, or to like, tag them in shit when you're being explicitly sexual about their looks or like send lengthy twitter threads about how much you hate their acting choices or whatever. like, i'm not saying most people in fandom do this but i feel like that scene from men in black when tommy lee jones is like "a person is smart, people are dumb"??? like, yeah, there are great, intelligent, talented fans...but fandom is fucking dumb most of the time and sometimes fandom is fucking mean and unnecessarily personal with some random actor who you don't actually know bc you don't HAVE a personal relationship with them, you have a parasocial relationship and like...dude leave them alone but also protect yourself??? like What Is The Point you're not going to get what you want out of this relationship bc it's not a REAL relationship.

that was a bit of a rant, apologies.

and then something that i absolutely love is just?? talented people creating amazing, wonderful, beautiful things just for the joy of sharing something they love. like. fanart is FREE! fanfic is FREE! meta and gifsets and fanvids are all FREE! people are out there spending their time and energy just pouring their talent and their adoration and their love into something special and then just sharing it with you without asking for anything in return except for, like, some positive feedback and a little engagement. like, fandom doesn't EXIST without writers posting 100k+ slow burn canon divergent fics that i get to stay up late pouring over and ignoring my sleep schedule for. fandom doesn't EXIST without the talented artist spending hours painting a detailed portrait of a favorite character.

it's just this beautiful thing, this jOY, and everyone fucking wants to share it with each other and love it so much and man THIS is what i love about fandom, i don't need to engage with the actual actors or show creators, i just want to hang out with you guys and read all your meta and all your fics and reblog all the artwork and gifsets and cry over fanvids. like, fandom is like english lit class right? you sit there and you all consume the source material and then everyone talks about what they think about it and somebody points out this insane thing i never even noticed and it makes the source material SO MUCH BETTER. and then twitter is like? a public Q&A with the author where one half of the audience is full of assholes who stand up and go off on like, a 30 minute ramble about their own life that's totally irrelevant to anything and then asking the author some really cringe-y and patronizing question. like oh no, that part of fandom is not for me, i just want to be in my little english lit class LOVING this thing in private.

I cannot express my rage about the way genetically engineered people are treated in the Federation. Yes it's a horrible practice and is essentially the same thing as eugenics, but what Julian and the Jack Pack's parents did to them is not their fault! They shouldn't be locked away in a mysterious "Institute" or be barred from professions or immediately considered suspicious just bc they had shitty, ableist parents! They had no control over the situation!

There is a fanvid on youtube of the ds9 crew set to Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night" and the shot of Julian being lead down the promenade in handcuffs is used during one of the "I think we broke the law" lines and I'm so glad that video exists to give me something to laugh at in this incredibly depressing episode

Sisko really is just everybody's dad, huh?

It's so sad. He's just so done. He knows there's no way Sloan will be logical and he's going to end up imprisoned for something that wasn't his fault (but that he still feels immense guilt about!) and that people will believe it's bc he was "working with" the people who kept him in a prison camp and killed so many of his friends

I wish I was a better writer so I could write something about Julian actually addressing his trauma from being held in a prison camp, immediately having his biggest secret that he's terrified of and causes so much self loathing suddenly forced into the open, and then having both of those major traumas used against him to potentially imprison him

Personally, considering the way the Federation fucking treats genetically engineered people, I don't at all blame Julian for not telling Sisko! I mean, yes, I trust that Benjamin would have made the right decision and helped protect Julian bc he's a good person. But A, there's no way Julian could know that for sure and it's absurd to expect that he would risk confinement just to not be lying to Benjamin, and B, it would be asking Benjamin to commit crimes for him! He already hates himself enough, there's no way he'd force someone he cares about to be in a precarious situation just to help him out!

I know it's not real, but Jadzia and Miles (both of his besties) turning him away is so sad

Sidenote: Terry's voice when she says "How could you do it, Julian?" is hilarious. She sounds so dramatic

It's such fucking bullshit that Julian (and apparently Sarina?????) join Section 31 in the novels. He's clearly disgusted by their existence

As am I. I hate Section 31 so much

I know the whole theme of ds9 is to dismantle the idea of the Federation as a utopia, but to me at least, the way most of the show reads is that it's trying to say "We are better, but that doesn't mean we're perfect, and we can't just tell ourselves we're perfect and call it a day. We have to constantly examine ourselves and take count of the ways we can still be better, otherwise we'll never improve." But the existence of Section 31 says "We actually never got better in the first place, we just got more secretive; utopia actually isn't possible, there will always be a seedy underbelly," which is only reinforced by the fact that the only reason the Federation wins the Dominon War is bc of biological warfare spearheaded by Section 31 and it's so fucking sad. The thing that is good about Star Trek is that it's hopeful that a better future is possible, and Section 31 just shits all over that

I love ds9. It's my favorite Trek, but I will never forgive it for making Section 31 part of canon and I'm so fucking upset we're getting a whole ass show about this horrific concept. There's no way in hell I'll be watching it

Hello, fandom grandma, I am but a toddler and I really need your wise advice. How do I stop thinking about fanfic in terms of transactions? In my main fandom (not HP, I love your fanfics so much sometimes I wish you could be lured into it, but you're not into MCU are you?) I read almost every fic, leave kudos and comments. But there are writers who don't read or don't leave kudos or comment on my fanfics (I know my writing isn't bad either). They do read each other's stuff. (1/2)

“Now I enjoy writing fanfic, but it doesn't exactly exist in a vacuum. So my question is, how do I stop being butthurt because they won't read my stuff or comment on it if they do read it (I know for sure some of them did). They know me because I always comment on their stuff. And I don't think I could stop either, because feedback is important. I know you might say that what I write isn't what they like, but we write all the same tropes (2/3)

so it's more likely they just don't give a s. But I do. How do I let it go? It feels like I'm giving them everything, but they can't even give me kudos. You know what stood out the most here for me?

“Now I enjoy writing fanfic, but it doesn't exactly exist in a vacuum.”

That ‘but’ speaks louder than you know. Do you really enjoy writing fanfic? What about the writing brings you joy? Just hold that thought.

Now, I know it can be hard to not get hung up on things like kudos counts and comment counts and it’s not like I haven’t gone into AO3 and stalked though bookmarks hoping someone might have added even the tiniest commentary on it. I know that there is nothing quite like the endorphin rush of someone commenting on a fic. So, I get it. I really do.

I also know that everyone does fandom differently. Everyone contributes in a different way and every one interacts in a different way. Some people write fics. That doesn’t mean they necessarily read fic. And they don’t have to if they don’t want to. Maybe whatever precious time they have to give to fandom between jobs and kids and illness and life being an asshole is dedicated solely to giving the world things to read. How freaking awesome is that? Some people do fandom by writing meta. Some people do fandom by reading. Some people do fandom by betaing. Some have mastered the art of leaving comments. Some make fanvids or playlists. Some make gifsets. Some people draw and paint and create amazing art. Some people merely come here to let their brain turn off for a while and not have to DO THINGS for someone else for once and just want to BE. Some people lurk and never interact at all.

These are all completely valid, and no one has the right to tell people how to Do Fandom.

I don’t know how to tell you to enjoy fandom more, except maybe to say that you need to start humanizing the people on the other side of the computer. Don’t assume you know what is going on with them--you probably don’t. Going around assuming the worst of people is only going to make you miserable. Try giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. Try remembering that you are not the fandom police who gets to judge and ‘correct’ bad behaviors. Is that really where you want to spend your energy?

I know plenty of writers I really love who don’t read my stories. Do I wish they would? Sure, of course. Am I mad that they don’t? Hell no. Because I respect people’s ability/right to curate their own fannish experience. I respect people knowing what they like, and avoiding things that won’t bring them joy. I don’t personalize it, because it is not about me. I’m not saying that is easy, but it is my conscious choice. Don’t like, don’t read, is one of my core fandom commandments. (Along with do no harm, take no shit and your kink is not my kink that that’s okay.) This not only supports my choice not to read things I don’t want to, but people’s right not to read what I write if they don’t want to. No harm, no foul.

What makes someone a Nice Guy is entitlement. And only doing things to get something out of it from someone else, because they owe you, is classic entitlement. So find a way to do fandom with joy, or consider not doing it.

So let me ask again: do you really enjoy writing fanfic? What about it brings you joy? Your answer to that is a pretty good place to start.

• How I feel about this character:

I love Michael, particularly his coming out arc. I love that he was like “ooh huh wow this guy is hot, that’s new” freaked out for like 2 seconds, then was like “wait this is dumb, I like him why aren’t I going for it” then kissed Alex and immediately was like full steam ahead “lets bone.” It is..umm.. very similar to my coming out experience.

I love his sass and how fiercely he loves other people. I wish he’d stop getting trauma heaped on him over and over and over again.

• All the people I ship with this character

I really am usually a good multi-shipper but RNM broke me! I cannot ship him with anyone other than Alex. It’s a problem. I don’t hate Miluca and would probably be into them if Malex didn’t exist, but I can’t ship them. I wish I could!

However, I’ve been watching the OG and I ship OG Michael Guerin with practically everyone! I ship Michael/Maria, Michael/Liz Parker (I’m told it’s called polar which I love), Michael/Alex Whitman. Though I very very fiercely do NOT ship OG Michael Guerin with Isabel and literally just screamed “no no no, ew ew ew” the entire time that storyline was on screen.

• My non-romantic OTP for this character

Anyone that follows me knows that Liz and Michael: Science Bros are my ultimate brotp. It’s my favorite thing ever and I’ve written fic and made a fanvid for them because of my intense love for this dynamic.

• My unpopular opinion for this character

That Michael’s decision to go to Maria in the finale makes a lot of sense. I may not like it (see above: no ability to multiship when it comes to him) but I understand. And that I do not think that Michael thought he was rejecting Alex because I don’t think he necessarily understood that Alex was saying “I’m ready and I want to be with you.” Just because he made a declaration in 1x12 and they almost kissed in 1x13, these were high intensity moments and also those things have happened before and it hasn’t panned out. We’ve seen Alex’s growth and his arc forward and why things are different for him now, but Michael hasn’t and they are just so good at misreading each other’s intentions. So I don’t think it was as black and white of a decision as saying he didn’t want a relationship with Alex and did want one with Maria. I’m still not sure he felt that way as completely on the table. That’s my opinion anyways, I don’t know how unpopular it is.

• One thing I wish had happened with this character in canon

I wish we’d seen him tell Isobel he’s bisexual. I really hope he was able to tell her of his own volition and that it was a supportive convo, because he just hasn’t had the opportunity to have control over the narrative with anyone else. I’d love to know how that went especially because I really love their relationship.

When and How Can I Share My Card?

You may share your card as soon as you receive it on whichever social media platform you choose.

Please wait to share any creations you make from your card until the Posting Period has opened (either July 1 or January 1, depending on which round of Bingo you are participating in).

Can I cross off items on my bingo card as I complete them once posting begins?

Yes, absolutely! In fact, I encourage you to! That’s an excellent visual way to keep track of where you are in completing bingo, and it’s super satisfying every time you complete a project and get to cross a square off!

What counts towards completing a square?

A piece of fiction that is 300 words or more and is complete.

A completed sketch, painting, watercolor, etc.

A Mood Board, aesthetic collage, manip, or other image editing that fits the prompt and represents at least an hour’s work.

Music playlist with a header (can be as simple or elaborate as you wish) and at least 10 songs. Can be shared through Spotify or other music streaming service as long as it is shareable through tumblr or twitter.

Themed fic rec list with a header (can be as simple or elaborate as you wish) and annotations. Annotations should include commentary on how you approached creating the list and a note on each story recced, explaining why you’ve included it. Each rec list should have at least 8 stories linked and should include a summary and a listed author with a link to their AO3 profile or other social media (if the work has not been orphaned or posted anonymously).

Podfic of an original script/story written for the Bingo square by the person completing that square.

I’m in multiple Bingos. Can I make something for both events at once?

As long as the thing you are creating for your Spideypool Bingo follows the rules of this fest and only counts as ONE square on your Spideypool Card, it is acceptable to have that same thing count as a different square on a Kink Bingo or Fluff Bingo, or whatever other Bingo you’re in. Make sure to check the rules of the other event(s), though. Not all Bingos allow event crossovers.

If you are using your thing for multiple Bingo events, please make sure to make it clear which square of the Spideypool Bingo card you are filling separately from any other Bingo event. Please also do not include the other Bingo’s information on your submitted post for the Spideypool Bingo blog (meaning if you are posting card updates with your submission, do not include the other card(s) in the post you submit to be promoted on the Spideypool Bingo blog. Can I collab with someone else?

Yes and No.

Yes: An artist and a writer have corresponding prompts on their bingo card that they would like to work on together, ie. Crying into Ice Cream. Writer writes a fic involving Crying into Ice Cream, Artist draws a piece of art to coincide with that story. The artist may post their piece with a link to the story, and the writer may embed the piece of art into their story, as long as each person creates something individually that represents their own bingo square, this collab is within the rules.

No: Two artists or two writers create One Piece together that they each count towards their own bingo card square.

No: Two people share One bingo card.

This isn’t a competition—and never will be as long as I am running it—but sometimes people get competitive all on their own, and I don’t want any hurt feelings if someone starts thinking that a collab team has an unfair advantage over individual creators in completing bingo faster. It might sound silly to you, but I have seen people become genuinely upset because of this scenario in the past, and I do not want anyone participating in this bingo to feel the same way.

What happens if I never get a bingo?

Absolutely nothing! This is not a competition. You do not have to complete bingo in order to proceed to the next round. If you get a bingo card and never complete a square, you will still be able to participate in the next round, no questions asked, no judgements made.

Can I create podfics of other people’s works as long as I have permission from the writer(s)?

No. If you want to do that on your own time, go right ahead! But it will not count for the purposes of this bingo event. Bingos are meant to foster creativity and encourage people to make new creations, not different editions of already existing creations. All qualifying work should be new and of your own making from outline to completed work.

I don’t understand what ______ is...

I don’t mind helping you understand what a prompt means, but please give it a google search first. Most of them are fairly straight-forward.

Changes to your card should be about what makes you uncomfortable, not what you don’t think you can fill Right Now. You have six months to work through your card. A prompt might not spark anything for you now, but come August or October? BAM! Genius idea you would have never thought about if you switched that prompt now. Bingos are just as much about challenging yourself creatively to work outside your normal box as they are about getting you making. Punch your way out of that box, y’all. It’s what Wade would want you to do.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What’s a fanwork exchange? A fanwork exchange is where a group of authors and artists sign up to create fanworks for one another. Everyone that has signed up will create at least one fanwork and receive at least one fanwork.

2. So what’s this exchange about? This exchange is meant to celebrate all characters and relationships in the Person of Interest fandom, whether the pairing is canon, non-canon, or sheer crack.

3. So let’s say I’m interested. What would be required of me, if I decided to participate? You will sign up to create one fanwork (fanfic, fanart, fanvid, podfic, remix). This exchange will be run entirely through Ao3, so you must have an Ao3 account to participate. If you don’t have an account, contact a mod for assistance.

All fanfics written for the exchange have to be a minimum of 1,000 words. There is no maximum word count. Fics cannot be part of a series – they must be able to stand alone.

Art can be computer or hand drawn and must be complete. Manips are allowed as art, but must be complete and not simply a screenshot with a filter on it.

Fanvids must be either: one complete song, or a medley of songs lasting at least one minute.

Podfic: When requesting a podfic, please choose an existing work which is less than 5,000 words in length. If you’d like a podfic of a work you have written yourself, add the ‘Podfic Welcome’ tag to those fics so your podficcer knows which to choose from. Mention that you have done this in your signup, alongside any prompts. Please note: by adding the 'Podfic Welcome’ tag for the purpose of this exchange, that counts as permission without further notice. This is an alternative to a blanket permission statement. which makes all your works open for transformation. Because the exchange is anonymous, it’s difficult for podficcers to contact authors to ask specific permission to record. Bearing that in mind, if you’re requesting podfic of a work that someone else has written, please make sure the author is comfortable with their stories being recorded before you make that request.

Remixes: What is a remix? When requesting a remix of an existing fic, please choose a work which is less than 5,000 words in length. Please ensure that you are truly happy for your work to be rewritten by someone else. If the author is not you, make sure they are happy to have their works remixed before you make that request. In your signup, you can provide ideas for how you would like works to be remixed, as in “I’d like to see this scene from Carter’s PoV instead”, but your creator does not have to follow those prompts exactly if they have other ideas. However, they must respect and avoid your list of Do Not Wants. When creating a remix, please be respectful in your author notes (i.e. don’t say: “the original was out-of-character so I fixed it”).

4. Okay, so how do I create a fanwork for this? How do I know what to create?

The exchange runs through several different parts:

4-1. Nominations: March 23-27 By default, all canonical Ao3 tags associated with the Person of Interest fandom will be included. The nominations period is for non-canonical tags, e.g., rarer relationships and characters.

Unlike last year, we will be grouping relationships and characters together in a single box to make matching easier.

When nominating characters, please use the format Character: First Last. An example would be Character: Zoe Morgan.

When nominating platonic (e.g. gen fic) relationships, please use the format Character A & Character B.

When nominating romantic relationships, please use the format Character A/Character B.

To see what is already considered canonical, you can view the Person of Interest tags page.

4-2. Signups: March 27-April 7 You must fill out at least three requests and three offers. Each request and offer should be a unique character or relationship, but you may have as much overlap between your requests and offers as you like. You may also give multiple ideas per character or relationship in your prompt.

Please note that while the box will be labeled “Relationships”, you will also need to place your character requests/offers here.

For your sign ups, please go into some detail about what you would like; this helps give the creator of your work some different ideas about what they could make for you. You can put this information in the Ao3 signup form, or in a letter on a third party site, or some combination of both.

Good things to list: general likes, rating restrictions, prompt ideas, squicks/triggers/do-not-wants, or anything else you’d like the writer to know. Make sure you list things you definitely do not want. Authors and artists are absolutely forbidden to ignore squicks and triggers. Otherwise, the only guideline of your prompt they are unequivocally beholden to is the requested pairing, though they are encouraged to take your preferences into consideration. Here’s an example:

Root/Shaw: I really wish they could have hooked up for real once before the series was over. I’d love to see them spending a night together – whether tender or rough!

4-3. Matching: April 7th After sign ups are completed, the mods will begin to match people based on their interests. You are guaranteed to have a match by April 7th. If you do not have a match by then, please contact the mods.

Once matching is complete, you will receive an email with your assignment. You will be assigned to write or draw for someone who requested at least one of the characters/relationships that you offered to write or draw for. Since everyone must put in at least five requests, it is likely that your assignment will include characters/relationships that you did not offer.

4-4. Create a fanwork: April 7th-May 19th After you receive your assignment, you should select one of the characters/relationships in your assignment that interests you and start working on your fanwork. The character/relationship does not have to be the one you signed up with – if there’s something else that catches your eye, you’re most welcome to run with it! You will have six weeks to complete your assignment. Again, you must honor any squicks/triggers/do-not-wants listed by your recipient.

You must remain anonymous (e.g., not let your recipient know who is creating for them) during this period. If you have any questions to pose to your recipient and are not sure how to go about it, you can ask a mod for help. If you don’t know where to find a beta, there will be a post on the Dreamwidth community where people will offer to beta read for this exchange.

4-5. Posting: April 7th-May 19th All stories and art must be posted by May 19th. You may continue to edit your fanwork until May 26th, but it is imperative that you have a complete work submitted on May 19th. The mods will then go through posted fanworks to make sure that they are not placeholders (e.g. garbage text, incomplete stories, un-altered screenshots, etc.). You may post your story or art earlier without impunity.

4-5. Reveals: May 26th-June 2nd All stories and art will be revealed anonymously on May 26th. You must have your final draft up by this time. Creators will be revealed on June 2nd; after this point, you may post your fic or art on your own blog or other third-party websites.

5. Uh…crap. So it looks like I bit off more than I can chew. Uh… can I just… not post anything? If you think you might have to default, please do so before May 19th. This is to give pinch hitters time to create works, ready for the collection to go live on May 26th. If you default after May 19th, reveals may be delayed for everyone.

6. I’m not sure I can commit to the full challenge, but I’d like to write/draw something. Is there anything I can do? Yes! You may join the Pinch Hitter list and write fics or draw art for people who default. You may also sign up as a Beta reader or write treats.

7. What exactly is a treat? Who can create treats? A treat is any fanwork created for this exchange that is not a participant’s assignment. You can create treats for anyone who is participating – you don’t need to be signed up to write a treat. You can also create a treat for your recipient if there’s two prompts that really grabbed your attention. Treats have no minimum word count but must follow the same rules about squicks/triggers/do-not-wants.

To clarify its for Brooklyn 99

A - Your current OTP: Ok so I have to cheat right out the box - cos I have two. Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago and Captain Raymond Holt and Kevin Cozner. They’re just perfect for each other, so complimentary and so in love - but real you know?

B - A pairing you initially didn’t consider but someone changed your mind Jake and Doug Judy. They are a friendship otp (mostly) but yeah lifelong togetherness. And it was tumblr that got me wondering on this.

C - A pairing you have never liked and probably never will Jake and Amy with anyone that isn’t each other during the show. Brooklyn 99 is better at this than most tv shows but the people introduced solely to keep the will-they-won’t-they couple apart will always annoy me - its just taking air time from the bits of a show I like and forces so much jealousy and stuff - and I’m not into that

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t Rosa Diaz/Adrian Pimento. They just never clicked for me as a couple and she is so out of his league its painful. Not that I’m against Rosa having a boyfriend I actually liked her with Marcus and was upset when they broke up. But yeah…

E - Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what I don’t think I’ve offered much to the 99 fandom - I mostly reblog others bits and agree or add silly comments.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? 22 years. I was with Buffy from the get go - and while its got its issues and bits of it hasn’t aged very well I wouldn’t have been the same without this show in my life.

G - Do you remember your first OTP, if so who was in it? Bangel. The combinded high romance and excruciating pain had me hooked. I still feel it when I watch it all these years later.

H - Do you prefer characters from real action series or anime series? My anime interest has grown over the last few years but action still wins overall - especially since I can’t help loving seeing my favourite characters in pain - and the live action means we get to see the actors and actresses hurt and cry for the sake of the drama - anime can’t compare.

I - Has tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why? I try not to let tumblr do that to me if I can help it (these days anyway) but (and I realise I could die for this) I have started to dislike corners of the Star Wars fandom due to their treatment of certain characters.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr. Oh god so many - but… sense8. It was advertised no where so I wouldn’t have known it existed or watched it without tumblr giffing the hell out of it - and wouldn’t that have been a shame.

K - How do you feel about the other people in your current fandom? I’m assuming this is Brooklyn 99 so… I love them. Honestly. Their love kept the show going when it was cancelled allowing us to continue enjoying this wonderful funny show.

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for? @lupismaris please please more chapters for But Alone is Alone (Not Alive)

M - Your favorite fanart or fanartist? I’m so bad with names - but I’m hoping the upcoming Silverflint Big Bang and rarepairing weeks will teach me the names better.

N - Your favorite fanfiction or fanauthor? See above - I have so many I love but I suck with names.

O - Choose a song at random, which OTP does it remind you of? Only Love Can Hurt Like This - Paloma Faith - and Silverflint. Seriously there’s a fanvid to this on Youtube that fits them so well.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas): Black Sails - Thomas comes to Nassau instead of Flint going to him. There are so many characters I need him to meet on that island. Feel free to have him arrive in earlier season to meet characters that totally didn’t die (vane cough cough) - and p.s. I’m total Silverflinthamilton trash so yeah…

Q - A ship you’ve abandoned and why? Destiel. I hung on to this for far longer than I should have mostly because I couldn’t handle the truth of this pairing - that it was world-class queerbaiting of the highest degree - mind you I stayed with Supernatural for longer than was sane too (9 seasons god help me)

R - A pairing you ship that you don’t think anyone else ships. Is there actually a ship in any fandom that no one has ever thought of before? I mean even as Crack!fic it’ll have been done. I guess my closest is Joshua Donovan and Steve Jinx from Warehouse 13 - I don’t know if anyone ever put those two together and its a small fandom

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon: I don’t really have a personal headcanon for Brooklyn 99 - I agree with a bit of fanon that’s gotten popular - Bi!Jake. Honestly I kinda love the idea of Jake having been oblivious and accidentally had a boyfriend without him realising - and it being played by John Mulaney.

T - If you mostly have homoships, do you have any heteroships? Bangel, Peraltiago, Willow/Oz, Fred/Gunn - though I should mention that I headcanon one or both of these couples as bi so… not totally hetero.

U - If you mostly have heteroships, do you have any homoships? I mostly ship queer ships - its just a fact. And if I ship it I’ll reblog about it - probably more than people would like honestly.

V - Are you one of those fans who can’t watch anything without shipping? Don’t be daft. But on the same token - why’s it bad if you do? Shipping is just another part of fandom. Another avenue of interest and discussions to have in your fandom. And why would you deny yourself an extra dimension of enjoyment.

W - 5 favorite characters from 5 different fandoms: Ok so not choosing Black Sails for this because how in the hell do you pick just one favourite character in that? I’m changes several times a day. Honestly I’d struggle to do a top 10. So Tara Maclay, Buffy The Vampire Slayer - I saw so much of myself in her when that show first came out and she was a very important character - and I’m still pissed about what the show did to her. Captain Raymond Holt, Brooklyn 99 - god what a character, so much too long about him and he is a complete character flaws and all. Wynonna Earp - I love this woman soo much - and not just because the actress that plays her is a goddess either (honest), Dave Lister, Red Dwarf - I’m literally watching it right now - and honestly it was the first time I’d heard my own accent on television and I fell in love immediately and The Doctor - honestly a favourite character that can be a totally different character from one season to another? Classic - this character hasn’t been used the best yet (seriously why always white and why so long to be present as female?) The Doctor is still unique and wonderful character I’ve loved many versions of.

X - 3 OTPs from 3 different fandoms: Silverflint - there’s just so much in that relationship so much to work with, unpack, rewrite and do with it - you’d never run out of things to do with it - especially if like me you’re cool with either Hamilton or Madi added in (or all of the above), Holmes/Watson - in all versions in all mediums they are soulmates in all of them and I’ll never get bored of these two together, Posner/Scripps - it never happened in canon but it should have - Scripps is oblivious but totally in love with Posner and Posner knows - Scripps will figure it out in University and they will live happily ever after.

Y - A fandom you’re in but have no ships from: The IT Crowd - I don’t ship anyone there. Not really anyway.

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go: Black Sails is awesome - if you haven’t watched it go do it now - you won’t regret it - but fair warning it’ll ruin all other shows for you.

god literally everything how do you expect me to choose. okay okay okay for today i’m gonna kind of maybe cheat and say that my favorite thing about her is being inside her brain. i love her point of view more than anything else in the whole series. how she thinks, how she grows and what she believes, the things she chooses to say and the things she keeps to herself. her tiny rebellions maintained behind a wall of courtesy, her quiet courage. and then an added layer of snarkiness and flirtatious manipulation when she’s alayne stone.

i could say her naivete and her strict adherence to social protocols, because of how that ruined her childhood relationships with arya and jon, but i can’t even consider those least favorite things because i LOVE those parts of her, I love that she’s had such a huge character arc. that she’s not a perfect person, that she had to grow and learn and UNlearn a lot of things

show-wise? i am both angry we lost her vale plot and that she was swapped out with jeyne for the bolton disaster show, but if i had to live with that then i’m glad we got her reunion with jon and her taking back the north. i’m mad at the journey s5 took but not the places it brought us to in s6, if that makes sense. BOOKWISE? ummm i don’t ship her with any ugly old men. also she’s one of the most amazing characters in the whole series (i mean the BEST to me personally) and her chapters are so unbelievably beautiful and lyrical and i could read them forever. also… the kingsroad was not that deep it was just a fustercluck and the only thing we don’t dissect enough was how cersei had so much time to manipulate her into keeping her mouth shut

Influential TV Shows

Okay this is kinda random and why I prob won’t tag the shows I list cuz this is more just something I wanted to get out of my head after watching J&J’s latest podcast where they were talking about this topic. They kept it to 7 shows each and while that would certainly be interesting to try, that’s kinda hard. lol I went about grouping some of them - shows that shaped me growing up, shows that impacted me/stuck with me, comfort shows/watch with the family, taught me about fandoms, etc. And saying something about each of them. Anyway, this is stupid but here we go lol:

The Shows Growing Up:

Sailor Moon: Okay, nobody make fun of me. lol This is the first show I remember really watching as a kid that wasn't Barney or whatever, something I decided to watch by myself and it actually had an ongoing story. And ofc it took time for me to realize that this was just an English dubbed version that they would play on Cartoon Network. Looking back on it, it’s a little cringey (the voice readings, Serena being a bit of a crybaby) but seeing girls, even if it was animated, kicking ass over evil as a group made an impression on me so it’s no wonder I would watch it religiously after school and was sad when they stopped airing it. And ofc I watched all the movies too. I was a shameless fan. lmao I also eventually read the manga and appreciated it.

Hey Arnold: As a kid, I would watch Cartoon Network & Nickelodeon (& eventually Disney when I got a little bit older), and I think one of the Nickelodeon shows that really stuck with me as a kid, like Rugrats, was this one. It had a wide range of really distinct characters. It was genuinely funny. And I did love the dynamic between Arnold & Helga (who was interesting & sometimes they would let her be the protagonist of an ep instead of him, like the therapist one which is a def fave) even if her crush was kinda as stalkerish as you can get why maintaining innocence. lol And you know what? I did totally watch the recent movie they did where it tied up loose ends like getting these two together and allowing her to grow as a character. Gotta say it was rewarding after all this time. lol

All That: I feel like I gotta put this here because I watched this show all the time as a kid. And I think it’s something that really taught me about comedy. I had seen things from Saturday Night Live growing up cuz of my parents but this was my Nickelodeon version with people that weren’t much older than me at the time so I could really get what was going on/enjoy it. It’s also the first place where we saw people like Amanda Bynes & Kenan Thompson & Kel Mitchell (which is partly why I later watched things like The Amanda Show and Kenan & Kel) What can I say? As a young person, it was just really cool seeing kids being funny. Yeah, there was some cheese but I didn’t care. It stayed with me.

Boy Meets World/Sister, Sister/Lizzie McGuire/Even Stevens: I kinda cheated here and bundled these shows because these are four of the shows I watched on Disney growing up (Disney showed reruns of Boy Meets World & Sister, Sister for the record) There were others like That’s So Raven, Suite Life, Wizards of Waverly sort of, Proud Family to name a few but these shows I picked have such iconic episodes that I still remember well and love. Like Even Stevens - musical episode hands down Idc. Boy Meets World - Scream-inspired Halloween ep for sure. Yes, there was cheesiness with all these shows. Sometimes very after-school special, but they shaped me I think. Also gotta mention, I remember thinking of Hilary Duff as my idol. lol

The Ones I Watched With the Fam:

That 70′s Show: Now the thing with my family is that we were one where for a time we would watch tv while eating dinner and my dad would have control of what channel we watched. It was always this way, which meant it would either be Law & Order or Seinfeld (the second one I was cool with and I almost included it on here cuz it’s such a staple comedy but eh,,, I appreciated it more later on. It felt more forced on me at the time) This is probably one of the only shows I can say my whole family truly agreed on watching all together tho, including my sister who generally watches trashy reality shows. This show will always remain one of my faves, because it was hilarious. It got a little weaker towards the end (We do NOT speak about Season 8) but I loved how it was a true ensemble sitcom where everyone brought something to the table and enjoyed the different dynamics between the group. The funny running gags, Jackie & Hyde still remain one of my all-time otps, and Kelso is probably the funniest & lovable dumb character I can think of (If nothing else, Ashton Kutcher was meant to play this part ok) It was nice to have something my whole family could enjoy together. It was a rarity so this show has a special place in my heart for that alone.

Joan of Arcadia: Another show that has a place in my heart, despite it only lasting 2 seasons and it ending on a bad note (major cliffhanger, still never fully making things right w/ Adam after destroying his character, ultimately S2 was problematic but still) because this is a show that I watched religiously (pun not actually intended here lol) with my mom every Friday it was on. What I loved about it was that the concept is centered around Joan talking to God yet it generally wasn’t being preachy. Joan wasn’t always willing to do what God wanted her to do, and things didn’t always turn out how she wanted. It was a kinda perfect blend for me and my mom to watch together. After this we were more willing to watch stuff as a pair cuz we were close but this started all that. I remember always being curious how God would appear to Joan cuz it was always changing, but there were some fave recurring ones like Cute Guy God, Goth God & Old Lady God to name a few. heh Joan was played wonderfully by the awesome Amber Tamblyn who could always make me cry (naturally she played my fave Tibby in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies too lol) and she had awesome friends in Adam & Grace (who were my faves) and family. I rewatched this show and you know, I’d say S1 holds up and even the first half of S2. Heck, the episode where Joan & Adam break up towards the end of it, while totally heartbreaking and PISSES me off cuz bad writing for Adam, was solid simply for the acting so there’s that. lol

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Putting this show under this category because this was a show that I mostly got into because my sister loved it growing up. I was really young when it came out so I mostly remembered bits & pieces when I later watched it when I got a little older. It stuck with me tho cuz ofc the awesome Sarah Michelle Gellar playing badass Buffy (she was my sister’s idol) and it was a genuinely funny and smart show. It also got dark too. It wasn’t always solid towards the end, but I think it mostly nailed the actual ending (why Anya had to die tho... Spike I got but ugh) Anyway, this was kinda a big deal cuz it was the only thing my sister and I really watched together that wasn’t bad reality television or me barely paying attention to Dawson’s Creek at the time lol This showed that my sister could have taste when she wanted to (lmao sorry)

The Carol Burnett Show: I had to mention this show because this is one that got me, really my family, through dealing with my mom’s dementia. We chose to care for her at home instead of putting her in a nursing home. We did this for 2 years until her death. And the one thing we (excluding my sister cuz her & old stuff don’t mix) could always count on cheering us up was this show. My dad told me that my mom loved this show growing up and that’s why we turned on for her. So luckily memory or no memory, she still had a sense of humor and she knew when to laugh. And with good reason. This show is hilarious. So iconic. Carol Burnett was/is rightfully loved dearly for this show. I wish I had more I could say, but this was truly a comfort show when I desperately needed it so I am forever grateful that it existed.

Honorable Mention: Young & Hungry - another show that got us through that dark period, my dad actually really enjoyed this, despite seeming skeptical, and eventually started calling it the “Josh & Gaby Show” lmao Only thing is we never finished it together so oops. Not so much influential maybe but worth mentioning it felt like since it was underrated, got me thru a tough time, was hilarious and I loved that cast a lot. Emily Osment deserved to be the lead of her own show. Comedy queen.

The Ones That Brought Out the Fangirl In Me AKA The Teen Years:

The O.C/One Tree Hill/Gossip Girl/The Vampire Diaries: Another category where I’m just grouping them up together cuz ultimately it wasn’t about high art with these shows. They were the staple teen shows that everyone was watching and well, I was one of those people. lol It all started with The O.C. It was one of those ‘at the right time’ kinda things cuz I just went into the 6th grade when S1 started and it was such a big hit that everyone was always talking about it and there were even shirts involved (I never went that far lol) but this is where my need to explore YouTube came and then I was making fanvids. Gossip Girl is the one where I actually inserted myself into a fandom for the first time. My goodness the cringe that came with it but it gave me two of the longest online friendships I’ve ever had so I don’t regret it. (Shoutout to @backtothestart02 here as one of them) And well, three of these shows taught me the toxicity that can come from fandom. So I’ve been less vocal/more aware with other shows because of it. There’s problematic stuff in all of these but they were entertaining most of the time despite frustration (lol)

Honorable Mention: Teen Wolf - Had to mention this one cuz this was a show where I had a group of friends who all watched this together and we talked about it til the end (even when we weren’t happy with it lol) I was never really vocal in the fandom cuz by this point I was wary of them (fandoms I mean), but it was nice to share a show with people who felt similarly about it. As a show, I truly loved it up to 3B. Some of my favorite episodes were the ones that almost felt standalone-ish (3x06 AKA Motel California still remains my fave to this day) Lastly, it’s because of this show I was introduced to Dylan O’Brien who I always refer to as my ‘always & forever’ guy so yeah lol

Maybe Superhero Shows Are Worth Watching lol:

The Flash/Daredevil/Cloak & Dagger/Runaways: So I’m someone who growing up, beyond Spider-Man and Batman, never really jumped at superhero movies. I still don’t to an extent but I’m more willing to watch stuff now. I think because when it comes to TV, I’m willing to check out at least an ep. I got into The Flash because my friend Lauren was really into it (and still very much is now) and wanted me to check it out so I did. I sorta watched Arrow before it until a point so I’d seen Barry’s appearances on it and remembered thinking he was precious so I wasn’t surprised that I liked him as a main character. I do think these later seasons have lost some quality but I think the earlier ones were very solid and Grant is perfect in the role. Daredevil... R.I.P. That show was so high quality so the fact that Netflix cancelled it is just rude. Now... Cloak & Dagger has been one of those surprises for me cuz it was such a slow burn that when it really got going it left me wanting more. That S1 finale was so solid. Cannot wait for S2. Love the dynamic between Ty & Tandy. Now Runaways isn’t perfect but it’s my biggest fandom right now and I’m proud of that fact. It’s a show that highlights diversity with 4 PoC leads & 4 kickass ladies (Nico & Gert are my bb girls), healthy ships including an LGBTQ couple currently as the main one (tho it is Gertchase that owns my heart), and overall a pretty great cast that meshes well like the thrown together family they portray. It even got me back into writing fanfic again. A miracle tbh. lol

Overall Just Amazing:

This Is Us: I just think that this show pulled me in the second they revealed that first plot twist in the pilot. It surprised me and then they kept doing that a bit after. Now it’s more about how it has the ability to make me cry every ep and feel things. It doesn’t always touch me the same it did in that first season (it was an emotional year for me tbh) but it does have a class act cast who can always pull at my heart strings.

Boardwalk Empire: This technically could have went under something I sort of watched with my dad, but it is kinda a weird show to share I guess. We didn’t usually watch it together (saved some awkward convos sometimes lol) but always talked about each episode weekly and it was kinda fun cuz it was usually in-depth. My dad still quotes things from it to this day. He also once said that he considers S1 the best TV season he’s ever watched. I agree that it was great. For me, the first 3 seasons are solid while the last 2 felt different but still pretty good. There was such quality to it. Great acting headed by Steve Buscemi. What can I say? I have a thing for gangster stories. I could say more but I’ll stop. lol

Stranger Things: The show that really turned me into a binge-watcher. I had just gotten Netflix and what show did I decide to watch on my birthday? This show. I had seen things in the media about the kids from it and I was like, they’re adorable!! And ofc I got hooked when I actually watched the show. It just has everything in it that I like: mystery, thrills, humor, hint of romance, awesome acting, music moments, nostalgia. This was my obsession for a while until I got into some other things but if you don’t think I’m totally pumped for S3, then you best believe I’m watching it all in a day if I can. lol

Community: This is a show that reminded me how a show can think totally outside of the box and still have a lot of heart with its comedy. I love situations where a group of misfits come together and become a family. I love that this show celebrates being different. Troy Barnes remains one of my favorite TV characters ever (& omg his friendship with Abed is pure goals!!) and Donald Glover played him perfectly. And Alison Brie is just adorable as Annie. Love this group of weirdos. The quality was different after S3 but I still adore it.

Into the Badlands: Have to mention this show because what it has been doing action-wise is just incredible. The fighting sequences are out of this world. I’m always excited to see how they top it. Also, an Asian male lead? Go dude! The whole cast is wonderful and everything is just high quality, ok? Also, that cinematography!! Can’t believe it’s ending when it comes back. Sadness.

One Day at a Time: This is more of a recent discovery for me (had friends who watched it and knew it was good but only decided to check it out not too long ago) but it’s already made its impact on me. This show has so much heart to it. The writers put so much care into their work when they bring up these controversial issues in the episodes. All while being totally hilarious (but also trust me, I manage to cry at least 1 or twice an ep lol) A show centered on a Cuban family, plenty of good rep for LGBTQ/non-binary people while also handling things like depression/anxiety, addiction, immigration, etc. It’s definitely making its mark on TV. Also, Rita Moreno is a living legend who I adore. I love this cast so much.

12 Monkeys: I. loved. this. show! I still think it had the best series finale that I have seen in a while. It wrapped up things so well that I was smiling for a while after watching it. I couldn’t believe that of all shows this one gave me a happy ending. lol Casserole remains one of my all-time ships because they were truly epic and pulled at my heart strings so many times. Jennifer Goines was my queen. But seriously, a show about time travel that managed to make sense? So impressed. And the visuals? gahhh

Friday Night Lights: Last, but most definitely not least, this show is just up there as one of the all-time bests IDC. The fact that at first glance the show seems centered only about football and it got me to keep watching definitely says something. lol This show had so much heart, the cast was excellent, an ending that was pretty much perfect. Coach & Tami Taylor were relationship goals. Honestly one of the best portrayals of a married couple I’ve ever seen because they were very much a team (while yes there was the occasional bickering that you gotta love) and it just felt real, you know? Also, it’s a show that proved that you can come back from a sophomore slump (yeah S2 was the worst season) and continue to be great.I can’t decide if it’s my favorite show of all-time but it’s certainly one of the first ones to come to mind. So glad I decided to give it a chance.

There’s probably a couple other shows I could list here but some I haven’t finished yet and don’t feel ready to put them on here yet. This is just what I could come up with.

This song I actually listened to a lot at the tale end of 2017, because it was released as part of the Wrinkle In Time trailer and it was absolutely gorgeous. This year, I found it on a Stranger Things fanvid and it’s been on my Stranger Things mix ever since.

Speaking of songs that are on my Stranger Things playlist... I’m kind of at a loss as to why this got so freaking popular this year. I mean, it is a truly dope song and I’m super fond of it but like. Was it Stranger Things? Did it just become that anthem of the year? For me, it was that I wrote fanfiction to it and also we played it on loop while we were playing beer liquor pong on vacation. Okay, so like show of hands- who here has read We Were Liars? This is a mostly hypothetical question because I’m not sure anyone actually pays attention to these anymore but I like them, so fuck it. Point is, I was listening to the watercast playlist a lot while reading that book and this song was playing when we made certain discoveries that most of us had already guessed, and it made me cry. vii. knocking on heaven’s door || raign It's gettin' dark, too dark to see I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door

This fanvid happened around the time I was writing that Will and El as siblings fic and I basically played it and the video that inspired the next song on the list on repeat until I finished. This cover is lovely and haunting and just, such a freaking earworm.

I freaking loved that movie so damn much, but it’s soundtrack blew my goddamn mind. It is literally all I listened to for weeks, and this song in particular fucked me right the hell up. Just listen to the flutes and the bass. Just, damn. Killmonger, you’ve got the best theme in the entire movie. xiii. daddy issues || the neighbourhood I'd do whatever I could do I'd run away and hide with you I love that you got daddy issues And I do too And heeeere it is. This was the first song that I associated with Harringrove for uh, very obvious reasons. I got to see K.Flay in concert sometime late last year, and even though I didn’t know her very well (I told my friend that I’d see K.Flay with him if he saw Glass Animals with me) her music was sweet enough that I could appreciate the concert even knowing none of the songs. Let me tell you though, I fucking wish she’d played this song then because holy fuck. xvi. play with fire || sam tinnesz Insane, inside the danger gets me high Can't help myself got secrets I can't tell I love the smell of gasoline I light the match to taste the heat Kuroshitsuji is something I haven’t really thought about in like half a decade. And then I ended up seeing this vid while I was waiting for my connecting plane to arrive so I could go see my family. I only saw the damn thing because it was made by the same person who did this one, which I hunted down because I was reading Yuri On Ice fic on the plane and the point is: pingvi is amazing and all of their vids are a goddamn delight. xvii. the sailor song || autoheart I was your sailor, your demon Your lover, your overbearing best friend Hoping for some attention

So, while I was down visiting my family sometime during the spring, I had a brief dizzying spiral where I fell head over face into the Pacific Rim fandom, because Uprising quite emphatically fucked me up. Anyway, because of this I spent the night after I saw it scrolling through fanart and reading half a decade old fanfiction while my brother was trying to make me pay attention to him. Another thing that happened to me that week was the discovery of lipgallagher’s fantastic harringrove fic (shoot the lights out, hide) till its bright out. Which is all kinds of great and lead me to this song and the realization that Donald Glover does music? xx. hello || via audio How could it be Someone could find me Too scary to say hello to This was one of the songs on Damien’s fanmix from The Bright Sessions. And because The Bright Sessions suckerpunched me with feelings, I spent like a month straight listening to that mix and getting into that garbage man’s headspace. It was wonderful. xxi. daddy || emeli sande He's out your system yeah it took you a while You got your family back and you got your smile And you promised your sister that you'd never go back again I spent the better half of this year shipping Harringrove and Mark/Damien, which are both ships that are... well, not exactly the healthiest of relationships. Mark/Damien fucking ruined me. Listening to the last bit of The Bright Sessions was basically physically painful because like, okay. Logically I know that Damien is a garbage person. But also, he’s got a shitty power that would lead to some pretty interesting moral dilemmas even if you were a normal nice person (cough cough Mark), and like. They’re both so fucked up and Damien is so in love with Mark even if he’s not entirely sure how to be a fucking person and I have never had a pairing come after me as hard as this one did. Like it really came after me. Anyway, this was my true Damien/Mark anthem, because it’s fucking perfect and awful and fantastic and I just want them back in my life, guys.

This here is my most played track of 2018. I first heard it during the special two hour episode of Wolf 359 and the whole end of that episode just blew my mind. So I immediately went to spotify, found it, and have basically listened to it all year since then. It helps that Nick loves it too, so every once in a while he’ll be playing it, which reminds me why I love it and just. It’s so soulful and beautiful.

This was my year for podcasts - in one year I fell in love with Wolf 359, The Bright Sessions, and EOS 10 all over again when it came back for its third season. Near the end of the series though, The Bright Sessions did a musical episode! I listened to it in my car on my way to work and basically spent the entire freaking time smiling like an idiot. The Sense8 finale came out in June and it was absolutely wonderful. This song was playing during the last scene of the series and I fucking cried my eyes out. The song itself is fucking gorgeous, but what’s more is it made that last scene so much more than it would have been if they’d chosen any other song. It truly was, and forgive the corniness, a fucking experience. xxvi. singing in the rain || through juniper I'm singin' in the rain Just singin' in the rain What a glorious feeling I'm happy again I went through a phase in June-July where I checked out a bunch of old movies from the library. The first one was Philadelphia, because it was mentioned in the musical episode of The Bright Sessions and I just really wanted to watch it? But I also picked up Singing In The Rain, because I’d never seen it before and just, damn. I watched it before work and it was raining that day and the drive to work was the most fun because I just listened to different covers of the song and sang my heart out, and I was just so damn happy. It was dumb, and nice, and it probably going to be one of my happiest memories that I take with me into the new year. xxvii. hello stranger || barbara lewis Hello, stranger (ooh) It seems so good to see you back again How long has it been? (ooh, seems like a mighty long time)

I also watched Moonlight sometime in late June. It was one of those quiet nights where nothing really seems good enough, where you feel just a little bit empty inside and nothing is helping. So I watched the movie and read @notbecauseofvictories‘s A Cornstalk Fiddle on my back porch afterwards and the movie combined with the fic and the music turned that quiet empty night into something just as quiet, but a million times more full. Another good memory from 2018 that’ll stay with me for awhile.

I’m not 100% sure where I found this song either? My gut reaction is that it was a song I found while I was reading either The Cruel Prince or The Goblin Emperor, but I’m not sure. Good song, though.

Oh man, I found this cover one night while I was reading, and like, I was reading, so at first I didn’t really process what I was hearing, just that it was familiar and that I liked it. And then my brain connected the dots and I looked up and saw that it was a cover by Leslie Odom Jr and immediately restarted the song and just listened.

So last year Take Me To Church made it to my Top 38 or whatever I had it narrowed down to, mostly because I went through a Les Mis phase. But I kind of joked on that post last year about Hozier releasing an album next year and how unlikely it was, and lo, here we have it. Maybe not a full length album, but five new beautiful songs.

I spent the last few days of being a waitress driving to work blaring this and the last two songs and it did fucking wonders for my mood.

Breaking news, The Greatest Showman was amazing and I cried. I fucking missed hearing Hugh Jackman sing, and like the fucking lead up, of starting the movie with this song and then ENDING it with this song, with that performance, with those fucking lines (this is the moment you’ve waited for) - was so goddamn energizing. I just could not fucking deal.

Okay, okay. So there's this playlist called Wet Black Leaves that I listened to a lot when I started my new job, throughout rainy October and November, everything was just a little too wet and a little too cold, and this whole mix is so atmospheric and gorgeous. I absolutely adore it.

The finale of Wolf 359 fucked everyone up, right? Yeah, obviously. Okay, well the final episode of season 3 of EOS 10 also fucked me right the hell up. Like we’re talking messy crying in the car on the way to your like second or third day at the new job. Anyway, I kind of spiraled and then I went back and listened to Ryan’s mix and found this song and just wanted to kick my heart around for awhile.

But like, I also really like this song. So MESSY CRYING and also screaming all these words as loudly as I can within the relatively safe confines of my car. I guarantee you that people next to me at stop lights thought that I’d gone through a messy breakup.

xlvi. new rules | dua lipa Three: Don't be his friend You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning And if you're under him, you ain't gettin' over him Okay, but also some of the Ryan songs were catchy in a not heart breaking way, unless you think about the untold story of what exactly went on between Ryan and Akmazian and fill in the blanks and break your own heart.

Cher did an entire cover album of Abba songs in like, late October, I think? And like, my little gay heart fucking exploded and I listened to Cher singing ABBA songs for like three whole weeks and it was fucking fantastic. This... was actually not my favorite of the bunch until I went into a Barnes and Noble to pick up a copy of The Wise Man’s Fear and had a completely transformative experience when I heard it playing softly over the stacks.

And after a brief detour into delightful cher/abba combinations we’re back to tragic EOS 10 songs. Additionally, I’m sick of Hamilton songs fucking me up. I get to see it in person in 2019 and I’m going to make a fool of myself when I cry my eyes out in front of Nick and our friends.

Regarding fan creations

There's been a lot of conversation happening recently about fanfiction prompts, warning lists, and whether or not certain things "should be" requested or written. I've been a netizen since 1989, so naturally, I'm going to dump my two cents in. Please feel free to move right on to the next post if you don't want to read this.

Also, if you do read this and you want to discuss why I’m wrong, then I’m absolutely happy to discuss that - off anon.

Fanfic, fanart, fanvids, and the other wonderful creations of fandom have been around a lot longer than the internet as we know it. Yes, they really have. Before most people had the capacity to share their creations online, there were fan-published fanzines. Before we could create and edit videos on our computers, we created fanvids with two VCRs and a lot of tape swapping. And in all the time that fandom - the way we interpret fandom - has been around, there have been subjects that some people didn't want to see.

Me, I don't like to read about major character death, and I like my stories to have a happy ending.

Nobody - nobody - likes everything that's out there, even in their own fandom(s). And that's completely, absolutely, 100% okay. We have tags and warnings for a reason.

There are subjects that some people want to write about, draw about, vid about, talk about, that other people find abhorrent or triggering or just Not Their Thing. That's also completely, absolutely, 100% okay.

If there's something that you don't want to see, then you have the option to skip right over it. Don't look at it. There are warnings and tags for a reason. Utilize them, and protect yourself - and yes, for many, it is self-protection, I completely believe that - from subject matter that will bother you, for whatever reason.

Tags and warnings are an absolute necessity when a work is made available for consumption. Every major fanworks publishing platform out there has the ability to tag and warn, to put potentially upsetting content behind a link that the reader will have to click in order to move forward. These are the tools we have, with which content creators can allow others to avoid content they do not wish to see. It is the content creator and/or curator's responsibility to use those tools to the best of their ability.

It is also, undeniably, the content consumer's responsibility to heed the warnings and tags, to avoid clicking through to content they do not want to see.

It is unacceptable, in my not so humble opinion, to say that creators cannot or should not create content to which some - or even many - object.

An example - I don't care for Clint/Loki fic, because I personally feel that any relationship between them would be irrevocably tainted by Loki's actions leading up to the Battle of New York (see Marvel's Avengers for more details). I object to that content. Okay - so I don't read it. It's out there, and there are people who enjoy creating it and consuming it, and I avoid it because it's not my thing. Loki mentally enslaved Clint, and I find the idea of the two of them in a relationship to be squicky. So I avoid that content, because I find it objectionable. But I don't tell others they shouldn't create it or enjoy consuming it.

Another example - I find it extremely upsetting to read through a story and find that a major character dies during the course of that story. If I'm reading a Sid/Geno fic, and Sid or Geno dies before it's over, that messes with my head. I have my own reasons for feeling that way, I don't owe anybody a justification for that, and I acknowledge my own responsibility to avoid content tagged for Major Character Death. But I don't tell others that they shouldn't create it or enjoy consuming it.

Some have objected to fanfic about slavery and/or rape. Okay, you don't like fanfic about slavery and/or rape, and that is completely, absolutely valid. Don't read fanfic about slavery and/or rape. One would assume that you object because these two things - slavery and rape - are utterly abhorrent in real life. I agree, they are - in my opinion - abhorrent in real life. Do you also, therefore, think that nobody should ever write about murder? Nobody should ever write about torture? Nobody should ever write about bullying, or say, as Stephen King has done quite brilliantly, write about horrific things that do horrific things to people?

We're talking about fiction; not reality, fiction. We're not talking about actually wanting to see a world where sexual slavery exists, or where rape is okay. We're not talking about wanting to live anywhere near Stephen King's AU Bangor, Maine. In fiction, we can explore things outside reality, both as creators and consumers, without wanting those things to be, or become, reality.

In closing: I absolutely respect a content creator's right to create content around subjects about which they want to create, even subjects that others might find objectionable, and I believe it is the creator's/curator's right to appropriately tag, warn, and apply content hiding click-through links where necessary. I absolutely respect the content consumer's right to avoid content which they find objectionable, and I believe that the consumer has the responsibility to heed tags, warnings, and "keep reading" links to avoid such content.

TL; DR: Creators/curators, tag/warn appropriately, especially for content that is known to be potentially objectionable. Consumers, heed the tags and warnings. If you don't like it, don't look at it. You have the right and the ability to just move right along.
