09: My final blog!

As I’m getting ready to graduate soon, ready to hopefully go into the world of science and nature interpretation, I can't help but feel both excitement and a bit of nervousness. Reflecting on my journey through university, I realize that my personal ethic has been quietly evolving, shaped by my deep love for nature and my desire to share its beauty with others!

Since I was a kid, I've been really drawn to the outdoors and nature, especially animals. Whether it was chasing butterflies through meadows, building forts in the woods, or simply lying in the grass and watching clouds drift by, nature has always been one of my happy places. As I grew older, my passion for nature grew more into a passion for conservation and environmental advocacy. I think I started to see nature not just as a playground, but as a precious and fragile ecosystem that needed protection. From the smallest hummingbird to the mightiest lion, every creature and every corner of the natural world has become special to me. 

As I prepare to step into the role of a nature interpreter in the future, I find myself thinking about a whole new set of questions and responsibilities. What beliefs do I bring to this work? What kind of interpreter do I want to be? At the heart of my personal ethic, I have a passion for the beauty and complexity of nature. I think that every leaf, every rock, every drop of rain is a masterpiece in its own right, deserving of awe and admiration. But my passion also goes beyond just appreciation, it extends to a determination to protect and preserve the natural world for future generations. In my eyes, being a nature interpreter isn't just about pointing out cool animals and pretty flowers (although those are definitely fun parts of the job). It's about creating a sense of wonder and curiosity, giving people a deep connection to the natural world and inspiring others to become passionate stewards of the earth as well (Beck et al., 2018, p. 42). 

To achieve these goals, I'm personally a firm believer in the power of hands-on learning. There's just something magical about getting your hands dirty and your feet wet, about feeling the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. Whether it's leading nature walks, conducting field research, or getting to hold and touch cool animals, I'm all about getting out there and getting involved. I think that hands-on experiences are great at creating a sense of connection (GGI Insights, n.d.). They engage multiple senses, promote direct interaction with the environment, and create memorable, immersive experiences that resonate deeply with people (Bloemendaal, 2023). But hands-on learning isn't just about having fun (although, again, it's definitely a perk). It's also about deepening our understanding of the natural world, bettering our observation skills, and creating a sense of empathy for the creatures we share this planet with (GGI Insights, n.d.). After all, it's hard to care about something you've never seen or experienced firsthand. 

In addition to hands-on learning, I'm a big fan of interdisciplinary approaches to nature interpretation. The natural world is truly a complicated place, so understanding it requires more than just a basic knowledge of biology or ecology. It requires us to consider the cultural, historical, and social factors that shape our relationship with nature, as well as the ethical implications of our actions (Spokes, 2020). That's why I think it would be important to always be on the lookout for new ways to weave together different disciplines and perspectives in nature interpretation work. Whether it's incorporating indigenous knowledge into nature walks, exploring the intersection of art and science in outreach programs, or delving into the psychology of conservation behaviour in research, it’s important that we build connections between disciplines (Spokes, 2020). Especially as someone who has a passion for science, discussing science in nature interpretation is crucial because it provides a foundation of understanding, creates informed appreciation, and empowers people to make informed decisions about conservation and environmental stewardship.

Of course, no discussion of nature interpretation would be finished without addressing the elephant in the room: ethical wildlife viewing. As someone who's spent more hours than I can count marvelling at the beauty of wild animals and trying to do wildlife photography, I know how tempting it can be to get up close and personal for that perfect shot. But I also know that our desire for a good photo shouldn't come at the expense of the animals we love. That's why I'm committed to practicing responsible wildlife viewing techniques, like keeping a safe distance, minimizing habitat disturbance, and never feeding or approaching wild animals (Burns, 2017). 

Finally, I believe that as a nature interpreter, I have a responsibility to address pressing environmental issues like climate change and habitat loss. These are not just abstract concepts or distant threats, but real problems that are already having a huge impact on the world around us. That's why I'm committed to using my platform as a nature interpreter to raise awareness about these issues, to share stories of resilience and adaptation in the face of environmental change, and to inspire other people to take action in their own lives and communities. Because at the end of the day, it's not enough to simply appreciate the beauty of nature, we have to fight for its protection. 

Overall, my personal ethic as a nature interpreter is grounded in a deep passion for the natural world, a commitment to hands-on learning and interdisciplinary approaches, a dedication to ethical wildlife viewing, and a passion for environmental advocacy. As I Start this journey, I know that the road ahead will be long and challenging, but I'm ready to face whatever comes my way with determination, curiosity, and a whole lot of love for nature!

Super agree on your study hc for Beta. The Sobecks would all be women in stem, 100%. I even had a photo of one of Beta's science fair photos displayed on Erend and Aloy's fridge (She won first place, obviously 😌)

I like the idea that she would be into coding and computer engineering like Lis herself!

Then for Aloy, I believe she'd love any STEM branches, but leaning into a more nature/field oriented branch, like biology/marine bio or environmental engineering- something where she can get involved in caring for the planet and keeping its balance, a paralell to her role in the original games.

I like to think their species evolutionary process was very back and forth (like a whale), but eventually became modern day mermaids. Like apes and whales they sing, but Link's adjustment to speaking might have affected his vocal cords. He still likes to sing, just shy about it like in the karaoke music party.

My Relationship With Nature and Its Evolution:

Good afternoon everyone, welcome to my blog! I am a fourth-year student majoring in Biological Science. Throughout my university career, I have gained a greater appreciation for nature through my life experiences and engagement in various environmental science and nature-based courses!

I have always grown up in the city and quite urbanized areas, so appreciating nature was not necessarily a big part of my life and I never took the time to appreciate it when I was younger. My view of what nature was and its importance began to change when my grandparents purchased a house in a rural part of Fergus with a big plot of land containing a pond and a forest backing onto their property.

As I spent much time there, especially in the summers, I began to explore the forest and fish in their pond, catching frogs and clams with my siblings. My uncle was also very in tune with nature and worked in environmental science, so as I got older he would take me and my cousins outside and show us various plant and animal species. It was always fun when he would find a random plant and tell us we could eat it, that always shocked me. When I was around 10 or 11, he gave me two books that I still vividly remember, one outlining every plant species known and the other outlining all bird species. I loved reading these books and found them very interesting, maybe this book is what inspired me to have birds of my own! This relationship with my uncle and nature has always been important to me and I have appreciated it more as I have gotten older. As a result of this, I believe that my grandparent's house and my uncle have especially offered me a sense of place within nature.

I would say that the time during COVID-19 was also pretty impactful as there was not much to do, so I started to go on more hikes and I began to enjoy spending my time outside. I live in an area that is close to many different trails so I started walking them quite often. I have also always had an interest in photography and art, so I became very motivated to take pictures of my experiences while on my hikes.

In the summer I would also often find a bench or table in the arboretum and draw. I would use the nature around me as inspiration, or just for a calm and relaxing environment. I believe my artistic creativity in a way has also provided me with a sense of place in nature. These hikes definitely inspired me to pursue more nature-based courses when choosing my electives such as climate change biology, pesticides and the environment, and honey bee biology, all of which I loved!

Oh this is a great question, I have to think about what counts as niche LOL, most of these probably aren't that niche but I'm not sure what else to call them

I definitely have a LOT of interests I don't post too much about, and some of which I haven't fulfilled IRL yet (like I don't have the means to pursue it as a hobby)

Some random SpongeBob headcanons for y'all, since I don't know where else to put them, LOL.

Patrick has a collection of various valuable rocks hidden away somewhere in his house. Geodes, crystals, tumbled stones, etc. He loves them all. He has only ever showed his valuable collection to one other person, and that is his best friend SpongeBob.

Patrick and his parents technically all fall under the transgender umbrella (specifically genderfluid), according to science. It is well documented that adult starfish can change their gender in a multitude of ways for a multitude of reasons. One of the main reasons they do this is when environmental factors change, like water temperature and food availability. So, for all we know, Patrick may not have always been a man, and he may not always be a man. Same applies to Herb/Cecil and Margie/Bunny.

The first movie Squidward ever remembered watching was the SpongeBob equivalent of a Busby Berkely film - he was just so enamored with the graceful dancers and their radiant smiles and their gorgeous moves. I'd like to think that it was there he first felt the seed of wanting to be an amazing dancer be planted in all three of his hearts.

Mr. Krabs likes to go stargazing as a hobby. Considering he's a former pirate and navy man, Mr. Krabs more than likely had to use the stars to help his fellow sailors navigate at night. He gained an immense knowledge of the night sky and how it changed throughout the seasons as a result, as well as a lifelong interest and appreciation for it. Nowadays, anytime there's a special astronomical event (like a supermoon or a planetary alignment) or he's simply feeling nostalgic, he'll look out his bedroom window at the top of his anchor home with his telescope and take a look at whatever stars/planets are present. It's an activity that's always made him feel at ease.

Larry is bi-curious. He knows for a fact that he simply loves women in general (no matter the phylum), but men are a far more complicated matter. He does rather like the sight of a well-toned, muscular body on another man, but he can't tell if it's because he's impressed/proud of that man's accomplishment, or if it's something more. He is currently conflicted on whether he's fully straight or is in fact bisexual with an overwhelming preference for women. Whichever one is the case, he'll figure it out when he figures it out.

After the incident with Drizzle, Gale Doppler absolutely cannot eat any food with a cloud-like consistency, namely cotton candy. If he does, his stomach will cramp horribly, and he will violently puke it back out.

Rube Goldfish may not be the best source of information regarding the surface world, but he is astoundingly knowledgeable about life underwater and its history. It would only make sense given that he’s a sea creature himself and he’s amazed by everything, big AND small. He is especially keen on underwater paleontology.

Rube 100% decided to become a tour guide because of all the fun he had with Patrick when he was still a tourist. He felt that if he became one himself, he could bring the same kind of joy and wonder he felt when he was on tour himself.

Sticky Fins Whiting and Dorsal Dan are both LGBT. The former is gay, while the latter is bisexual. They dated for a while, but all that led to was an amicable break-up after realizing that they just weren’t compatible as romantic partners. They still work together amicably as partners in crime though (and as besties).

Sticky Fins’s new partner is Sockeye Sammy. Dan is very much aware of this, and wishes his best friend and his new partner all the happiness in the world.

This is sort of canon anyway if you believe the events that take place in “Krusty Cook-Off”, but I’d like to think that Sticky Fins and Dorsal Dan are of Italian heritage. Both of them are voiced by beloved Italian-American actors (Joe Pantoliano and Steve Buscemi respectively), and they are the main antagonists of the storyline that takes place in the “Pasta La Vista” restaurant in “Krusty Cook-Off”. They even take over the restaurant and start making the pasta themselves after SpongeBob and co. leave for the next place.

1. What has been your favorite time period to play in or which one are you most excited for?

Oh gosh... This is really going to take some thought. I have really enjoyed the 1890s because of the labor reform and industrial revolution aspects of the time, but there's also the 1920s and 1930s when there was a massive amount of science discovered and environmental damage that will affect future generations.

2. Do you have a favorite piece of historical cc? (CAS or BB)

I really love @linzlu's retro sinks, but I also can't function w/o a lot of @gilded-ghosts's outfits.

3. Who is your favorite sim currently?

 So it's actually little Gordon. His future is heavily inspired by my own interests and emotional events that shaped and altered me. I'm very excited to develop his story.

4. What is your favorite world?

I love all of them for different reasons, but Brindleton, Windenburg, and Granite Falls are probs my favorites.

5. Are you more gameplay or story focused?

I play the game to get to the good parts of the story I want to tell. Sometimes the game throws me for a loop though and I need to alter my story to fit the gameplay, but the story definitely drives a lot of how I play.

6. Do you like to play with pets in your historical saves?

I do, but not cats. I like having dogs, but I a dog person IRL so its just a natural fit. I miss the dog from Gen 0 but it hasn't felt right in the story to have a dog again.

7. What’s your biggest immersion breaking pet peeve with the game?

The weird outfits on the pets in Brindleton. I can't seem to find a mod or anything that will make pets not wear clothing.

8. What’s your favorite in-game historical item? (CAS or BB)

... Probably the boots from Vampires or the lace-up boots that came with GTW.

9. What would you like to see as a new pack or asset to the game?

I would like to see more free swim areas. The areas in Britechester and Sulani are cool, but Brindleton could use some free swim areas along the coast.

10. What pack do you think is invaluable as a historical simmer?

Obvs, Cottage Living, but I have to agree with Get Together or Vampires for their build mode items.

11. Do you have a favorite mod to enhance historical gameplay?

So many, but MCCC, Better UI, Better Exceptions, TOOL, BBB, Timeless, Home Regions, Language Barrier, and I know I'm forgetting some.

12. What’s your ideal family size for playing?

4-5 people. I hate when the dice dole out 5-6 children. I really dislike the new newborn phase and the toddler phase is something to just tolerate.

13. Do you use poses?

All. The. Time.

14. Do you use any overrides in your game?

I had a crib override at one point, but infants broke it.

15. Do you, or did you, play off-the-grid during your game?

I played OTG all through the 1850s to the 1880s. 1880s including plumbing being added. Electricity was added in 1890.

16. What lifespan do you play on?

I play on normal lifespan, but with the days in each stage altered slightly. In my game, 2.8 days equals 1 year; so some years are 3 days long and some are only 2. 28 days = 10 years

17. What inspired you to start playing a historically?

I have always loved history and learning about it. For about half a second during my junior year, I thought about becoming a history teacher until I remembered that I don't actually like interacting with most people. I have, thankfully, learned the skills to deal with people on a daily basis but some (most) days it's exhausting.

So... I’m looking for an obscure ‘90s cartoon.

Does anyone besides me remember Wolffang Warriors?  It was an ‘80s / ‘90s cartoon, and I say both because it premiered in 1989 and I think it lasted until 1992 or 1993.  A lot of people think it was a knockoff of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but I am honestly not sure if Turtles aired that early?  It aired in syndication, although I think it was picked up by Fox Kids in its final season.  It aired on Saturday mornings, or, if you were lucky, you could catch it during weekday rerun airings before school at 6 or 7 in the morning when you were eating cereal in your jammies.   Anyway, it was about a bunch of teenagers and their science teacher who could turn into werewolves and had themed superpowers.  Well, “werewolves” was stretching it a bit because they actually were a variety of canids.  This was the late ‘80s / early ‘90s, so EVERYTHING had to have a “save the environment!” theme and this show was no different, so each character turned into some endangered canid - and an extinct one in one case.   The first episode (and the scenes in the opening theme song in case you didn’t see the pilot) features the teacher and his students exploring a cave where they find a magical purple crystal housing an Earth Spirit, which grants them the power to turn into werewolves when they concentrate really hard and use a catchphrase.  I think it was “Go! Howl! Go!” - but I barely remember this thing, I just know it was really cheesy.  The Power of Friendship was involved and when they were not fighting for justice, the Warriors had to conceal their secret identities from family and friends.   If I am remembering the names correctly, the teacher’s name was Mr. Wolfram. A little on the nose there. He turned into an arctic wolf with ice powers, a huge chest and a big, bushy beard and served as the wise mentor of the group.  The Pack Leader was a “cool dude” jock named Jake who turned into a gray North American timber wolf with super-strength.   Jake’s best friend, Wayne, turned into some kind of European black wolf and had food-based power-ups because he was a big eater and had aspirations to become a chef. Beyond that, I seem to remember it having all of the cringey “cultural sensitivity” and heavy-handed, not always done well “Diversity!” stuff of the period - those of you who remember Captain Planet and the Burger King Kidz Club will know what I’m talking about.   OF COURSE, Antonio, the Hispanic kid turned into a Mexican wolf (a critically endangered species) and Hiro, the Asian kid, turned into an extinct Japanese wolf. Antonio had earth-based powers and Hiro had lightning-powers.   There was not one, but TWO, count ‘em, TWO token girls!  Veronica turned into a fox and had fire-powers and Rosa was a maned wolf with water powers.  Bringing up the rear was sneaky, semi-criminal hacker-kid named Sly.  He turned into a coyote and had stealth powers and Nerd Smarts! He was good at breaking into the offices of evil corporations and fucking up their shit.   A lot of the foes they faced were environmental-villains, kind of like Captain Planet, but their penultimate antagonist was an Evil Empress who wanted to cover the Earth in darkness and oil who had a vampire-theme and lived in an evil, metal technological castle.  Her name was Draculina.  She was kind of like Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers or a knockoff of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.  The timber wolf guy was in love with the fox girl and she kept rejecting him and they had one of those “will they, won’t they” things going on, like in every other ‘90s kids show with a lead and a hot girl.    It was a fun little show, if a bit cheesy and full of that early ‘90s cringe.  It found a small home in furry fandom.  I learned through trying to find traces of it that there are two things you must NEVER, EVER say to a Wolfang Warriors fan:  You must NEVER compare it to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and, For the Love of Puppies (one of the show’s catch-phrases), you must never, EVER confuse it with College Humor’s parody show, Furry Force.  Wolfang Warriors was made for children and is not a parody - and therefore doesn’t have stuff like cow-boobs, fetish pregnancy or yiffing.  (That’s the domain of a certain subset of adult fans, not the canon show).    Lots of older fans think the artic wolf teacher is really hot.  Oy, some of the fanart I’ve seen...  Tagging @virovac and @lemaistrechat to see if they might help me out!  (For the Love of Puppies, please read the tags I’ve put on this post before you seek anything out!  Thank you)!

05: Science and nature interpretation.

Hi everyone! Since this week's unit was about science, I’ll be talking about how I think science fits into nature interpretation! As someone who loves both nature and science, I find that the connection between these two subjects is interesting. Nature interpretation isn't just about taking a walk through the woods; it's about looking into all of the layers of the natural world to understand its inner workings. That's also exactly what science aims to do - explore the mysteries of nature through observation and analysis. So, when we engage in nature interpretation, we're essentially applying scientific principles in real-time. 

Both science and nature interpretation thrive on curiosity and inquiry. We're constantly asking questions about the world around us and seeking answers through exploration and investigation. Whether it's wondering why certain plants thrive in specific environments or how animal behaviour adapts to changing seasons, most of the time we're engaging in scientific inquiry during nature interpretation. 

Furthermore, both fields are deeply rooted in a quest for understanding the bigger picture. Science provides us with knowledge about ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental dynamics. Nature interpretation takes this knowledge and translates it into accessible, engaging experiences for people of all backgrounds to engage with. By connecting scientific concepts with fun experiences in nature, we can bridge the gap between theory and practice, creating a deeper appreciation for the complexities of our planet. 

Nature interpretation also serves as a tool for environmental literacy, empowering people to become informed advocates for conservation and sustainability - something that is much needed today. By integrating scientific concepts such as climate change, habitat loss, and species conservation into interpretive programs, we can give people the knowledge and skills they need to address pressing environmental challenges. 

Lastly, nature interpretation is inherently interdisciplinary, using insights from various fields such as biology, ecology, anthropology, and geology. This interdisciplinary approach creates a very diverse understanding of the natural world. It also highlights the connectedness of different fields and creates a comprehensive perspective for us to view our world. 

Overall, nature interpretation and science are a dynamic duo, working together to deepen our understanding of the natural world and inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for its beauty and complexity. So, next time you're out exploring nature, take a moment to appreciate the science happening all around you! hey so it turns out WASTELAND 3 is a really good fucking game????? please play it??????

so wasteland is a spiritual precursor to fallout, made by more or less the same team. for that reason alone I'd been sort of side-eyeing the serious but never picked up 3 MOSTLY because the initial vibe I got from it was kind of icky - you're part of the desert rangers, a team of gunhavers that developed from a group of us army engineers who took over a prison after the bombs dropped, so I sort of assumed you were going to be forced to roleplay army cops in the wasteland, which, barf. Thankfully every worrisome vibe I've picked up seems to be there just so you and yours can all unanimously denounce it as trash that has no reason to exist, nor hope to under the the light of your gunfire. For example, one of the first things you do in game involves teaming up with actual cops in this city, but they almost immediately go mask off corrupt and you've got options for days when it comes to heavily antagonizing and/or outright mercing the sheriff.

ANYWAY beyond that I loved and love fallout new vegas to death and I do kinda wish it dumped gamebryo and went back to being an isometric turn based rpg. WL3 is an isometric turn based rpg and oh its so good. There's lots of AP to play with, a good cover system, environmental hazards. Different gun types you can spec into which beget different special abilities plus a weapon-specific ult that charges over time, and loads of status effects and the like, so it feels a lot more strategic and interesting than combat in fallout 1/2. Most of the battles end up being these really elaborate set pieces too which make you feel very, very cool.

it's way way way more openly goofy than fallout but also very very raw and cool when it gets serious. some of your skills are literally called Nerd Shit, Weird Science, Kiss Ass, literally Toaster Repair and the like. there are a lot of clowns. there's a gun that shoots frozen whole ferrets. you can charm just about any animal to fight alongside you and they are weirdly powerful. one time we robbed a brothel and got a leather daddy hat with two big dildos hanging off of it that gives you +2 penetration when you wear it. But we're also battling rising fash sentiments, often in these big cinematic shootouts with some of the coolest apocalyptic drip I've seen in a while.

It's got co-op too, so I've been playing through with Jax where we each control half of our six-person time, and while people have complained about bugs in co-op and we've bumped into a couple its really not been harmful to the experience, no moreso than any f:NV bugs.

our current roster is a Mom (from a distance), another Mom (with a tank wrapped around her), a Sweet Baby Boy with a heavy machinegun, a hobo, a cowgirl, a clown, a kitty, a somewhat stable clone, a potty-mouthed bird, recently two cyborg chickens and a pig, and also an enigmatic Italian who seems to have imprinted on us and won't leave our side

graduating hs this year (scary) + class started on tuesday ermm im still unemployed... um i went 2 the city just with my friend + nobody else for the first time 2 weeks ago (this sounds ridiculous but you have to understand its an hour and a half commute i live on an island + i cant drive lmao. im just a countryboyy) + she got mad at me because i was so bad at reading the bus schedules ❤️<- guy who has not taken a Big City bus in 11 years. what else i went to another party we had it in the middle of a provincial park and it sucked really bad so i left at 12 but everyone who stayed said it was more fun after that so whoopsie but idgaf it was lame. uhhh i wanted to be in earth science but i ended up in environmental science instead and it was realllly annoying (my teacher was weird + a specific type of hippie i dont really like And it was right after genocide studies so kind of two downers in a row. also she made us watch prince ea videos) so i got my counselor to change me into philosophy 12 but now i regret it because its too hard -__- so that was not smart but whatever. also ive been kind of slightly inactive but for like no reason i just dont feel like it. anyway my best friend came back from the camp she worked at all summer + its bumming me out because i didnt see her + everything + she is always talkin about how she likes her camp friends more than her friends here and its like damaging my fragile little ego............ and i dont have any classes with anyone i know and im LONELY. im so lonely you guys how am i going to survive the rest of my life without my three friends ive had since the dawn of time but also i believe in myself 🕊️ and my best friends are also kind of mean but its like whatever theyre all moving out in 5 to 12 months and theyll all be either in the city or literally on the other side of the planet. supposedly. this was so miserable sorry i am actually doing really good i got into the culinary arts program again + its so fun i love the chefs like our head chef is like top ten people ive ever met in my life hes soooo nice. + i have my favourite english teacher next semester so awesome because i thought id never have him again because i was so incredibly annoying to him in 9th grade. + im smarter now + like marginally more committed to school so maybe i can write an essay that doesnt suck ass this time ! what elseee i graduated french immersion + next year at some point im going to quebec + the us east coast because ive only been to california washington oregon + idaho and im like a fake fan. of the united states of america. also ive never been to another canadian province so really im more a fake fan of canada but thats ok by me. also i have been writing more and im having fun.
