Can we talk about Tiktok and Jeff Jackson?

Look, I know Tumblr generally hates tiktok but that's not going to stop people from using it and it has a ton of marketshare at this point so things happening on it kinda do matter a bit so we need to talk about this.

If you haven't been on tiktok, or aren't from the US, you might not know who Jeff Jackson is. Jeff Jackson is a congressman from the state of North Carolina. He made a bigger name for himself by joining tiktok a few years ago and making videos calmly explaining things that were happening in Congress. He generally was there to assuage fears and counter fearmongering happening in the news and on social media. Generally well respected and regarded on both sides of the aisle and on tiktok itself. He recently got redistricted out of Congress and is now running a campaign to become NC's attorney general while he serves out the rest of his term in Congress.

Then "the tiktok ban" bill came up for a vote. He made a video in his usual style telling people not to worry so much as he didn't believe tiktok would get "banned". His video went on to talk a out divestment and some other things but the important part is him saying he didn't think that tiktok would get banned. Then he voted in favor of the bill.

People absolutely clowned on him until he took down the video and issued an apology, to which people continued to clown on him. For days all over tiktok people have been talking about him and making fun of him and talking about how they unfollowed him and hope he loses his attorney general election, and talking about how he "betrayed" them all.

At first, I laughed at some of the jokes people made but the more people are saying it, the more I realize tiktok seems to have adopted Tumblr's old idea of a morally pure politician being a possibility. The dude literally explained twice that he doesn't think tiktok would actually be banned and he said it was based on some kind of classified info that he was worried. Idk how much I believe that but it's a good enough excuse when you can't exactly say "I had to play the politics game and since Im on my way out, it was better for me to vote for the unpopular bill to show my 'loyalty' to the party so other people in Congress will help with my continued political career since the bill was going to pass regardless of my vote. Then I can keep helping people from whatever position I end up in next" and not immediately lose all of the goodwill of those congressmen you just got with that vote. Also who knows, maybe they were briefed on something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ also maybe he's just.... wrong? He's human. As far as I can tell he's doing his best and doing a pretty good job at it, he can make a mistake or two, that's just how it works.

But tiktok is acting like he murdered puppies or something. And it's just so concerning and so few people are talking about it because talking about it (and defending him) on tiktok is basically social suicide, and since he was only really well known on tiktok (and his home state of course), no one else seems to even know, let alone care about him and his political career issues. He's a pretty good politician and it would really suck if his political career had to end over a single dumbass vote for a single dumbass bill, all because he actively uses tiktok and "voted to ban it" as people are putting it.

First starting on the plus side for the primary election result for NC, Jeff Jackson won his nomination. So, to all of those who came out and voted for him, I say, "Thank you from the bottom of my heart." Now keep it up this November. We can get him that seat if we stick to it.

Now on the minus side, LESS THAN 24% of registered NC voters came out to vote in the primaries. Look at that number. That's embarrassing!

I keep on hearing people whine, "Why do we get such horrible people to choose from every four years?"

IT'S BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T COME OUT TO VOTE IN THE PRIMARIES, BRENDA!

You had a nice wide range of people to pick from and several weeks of early voting. What kept you?

Non-voters out number actual voters by a huge margin and I swear, they are going to end up killing this country. ...but they'll show up at protests for the Tiktok vid!

It was convened by the Treasury Department. We were given 15 minutes notice.

It was literally on regular Zoom. I was emailed a link. I clicked it and suddenly I was in a very normal-looking Zoom room, only this one had most of Congress in there.
