Cinematic Death — Sascha Durbin
While it isn’t known for certain, film historians estimate that about 150 horse were killed on the set of the 1925 silent film Ben Hur in a single scene depicting a chariot race.
While the American Humane Association was established in 1877, it didn’t reach Hollywood until 1939 after a horse was jumped off a 70 cliff into a roaring river and drowned for the Western film Jesse James.
After the Hayes Code, a code that dictated the morality and decency of films and worked with the AHA to monitor animal treatment, was abolished in the 1960s, cruelty to animals remained unchecked in films. It wasn’t until the late 1970s that the Screen Actors Guild entered a contract with the AHA to ensure animal safety. Even after its expiration in 1980, the standard had been set and while animal cruelty is still in filmmaking, especially movies made overseas, the AHA is sanctioned by SAG to monitor the treatment of animals in films and the include the famous “No Animals Were Harmed” line in the credits.
