Joy to the World
I am finally reaching the end of a story I started uploading 12/25/2021. It's been a strange two and a half years, but if you love Christmas or Dickens or Julie and the Phantoms, you might just like this fic. Final chapter will be posted by 3/1/2024.
Rating: T
Words: 14857
Relationships: Julie Molina & Rose Molina, Ray Molina/Rose Molina, Carlos Molina & Ray Molina & Julie Molina & Aunt Victoria, Alex Mercer & Luke Patterson & Reggie Peters & Julie Molina
Summary:
"Christmas in LA is free of snow, but not of spirit. In fact, between the lit up palm trees, the shop displays everywhere, Feliz Navidad playing on every radio station, and a host of Christmas music and decorations all over Los Feliz high school, Christmas is pretty much unavoidable.
It all grates on her nerves. Christmas without Rose Molina is unthinkable. Almost as unthinkable as music without Rose Molina."
Can a well meaning trio of ghost boys bring back Julie's Christmas spirit and help her reclaim her music?

Fluffy Dialogue Prompts #10
“Text me when you’re safe at home.” for Reggie & Ray (alive modern AU setting)
Reggie lingers in the kitchen long after dinner is over and the dishes have been washed and put away.
He doesn’t want to go home. He may as well admit it. At least in the privacy of his own head. He really doesn’t want to go home.
And he’s pretty sure Julie knows how bad things have gotten lately, because she keeps causally mentioning the empty guest bedroom upstairs.
He thinks even Ray can see through his endless questions about cameras and lenses and lighting, because it’s nearing 10 o’clock and they both are barely containing their yawns, but he doesn’t tell Reggie to leave.
“I should probably head home,” Reggie whispers reluctantly. But what he means is, “I wish this was my home,” and “I’m scared,” and “If I told you the truth would you let me stay?”
And Ray say, “Text me when you’re safe at home.” Even if what he wants to say is, “Don’t go back there,” and, “Please stay,” and, “I’ve always wanted another son.”
But he doesn’t.
So Reggie leaves. And when Ray’s phone chimes fifteen minutes later with a cheery “Home 🙃” it does nothing to ease Ray’s mind.
Because Ray is pretty sure Reggie’s home isn’t safe. But until he has proof, until Reggie is ready to talk to him, he doesn’t know what to do about it.

I know arguments can be made that all the boys have ADHD/autism/both, but my sepcific neurodivergent headcanons are that Luke has dysgraphia and sensory processing disorder, Willie has ADHD (along with a healthy dose of PTSD and analysis paralysis...thanks Caleb), Reggie is autistic and also has ADHD, Julie has clinical depression and chronic insomnia, Alex has generalized anxiety disorder and develops OCD after the whole Caleb debacle, and Flynn has ADHD. They all have trauma obviously, from their families, or deaths, or fill in the blank here, so that is also a factor for all of them.

The Parents He Deserves
Luke rang the doorbell and pulled his collar away from his neck for the third time since he’d gotten out of the car.
To say he was nervous was an understatement.
Rose opened the door looking ready for a quiet evening in with her husband dressed in baggy sweats rolled down at the waist and up at her ankles, probably Ray’s, and an old band t-shirt. She was holding a glass of red wine and she smiled at him, like she always did, when she saw him standing there.
“Luke! What are you doing here?” She waved him in before he could answer.
“Sorry to bother you guys,” he fiddled with the flowers in his hand he was trying not to crush. “Here,” he said pushing them toward her. “These are for you.”
“Thank you Luke,” she laughed as she sat her wine down on the table by the door and took them from him. She buried her nose in the petals taking a long whiff, “Dahlias, my favorite.”
“Hey Luke,” Ray came around the corner from the kitchen dressed down like his wife in sweats and a plain black tee wiping his hands on a towel and giving him the same easy grin he’d been giving him for years.
He cringed realizing he was probably interrupting their dinner.
“What are you doing here? I thought you and the guys were having a boy’s night, that’s what Julie told us before she headed out with Flynn and Carrie.” He said stopping in front of him and tossing the towel on his shoulder.
That had been the story he told Julie but she was the only one of their friends that thought that’s what he was actually doing tonight.
It’d be a miracle if no one spilled the beans before he got to the real reason he was lying to his girlfriend, but one step at a time.
He bounced on his heels. “I need to talk to the two of you if you have a minute.”
“Ok,” Ray said glancing at Rose who bit back a smile before turning back to him.
“Come on in the living room Luke and tell us how we can help.” she said nodding in that direction.
He nodded in return and followed them down the hall to the family room he’d spent many nights hanging out with Julie and her family watching movies and playing games.
Rose laid the flowers on the coffee table and took a seat on the sofa next to Ray. They both looked up at him as he continued to stand across from them.
He thought he might vibrate out of his skin if he stopped moving.
He just needed to get this out.
“Luke?” Rose was grinning at him again. “You seem to have something important to ask us.”
“He does?” Ray sat up a little straighter and frowned at his wife.
“Ray…” she rolled her eyes. “He’s wearing a shirt with sleeves.”
Luke only peripherally noticed Ray raise his eyebrows at Rose as he started to pace back and forth in front of them pulling at his collar again and giving in to his need to move. This was the first time he truly understood why Alex paced when he was anxious.
Luke had never been more anxious in his life.
“Mijo?” Ray questioned.
He’d had a plan, a speech but he couldn’t recall a word of it now.
“Luke, carino,” Rose called him back from his racing thoughts.
“I’m sorry,” he stopped in front of them and ran a shaky hand through his hair. “I don’t know why I’m so nervous.” Actually he did know. He’d already been by his parent’s house and told them his news and they had not taken it well at all.
He stopped pacing and really looked at Rose and Ray Molina sitting on their sofa, holding hands, calmly waiting for him to tell them why he was here.
He took a deep breath and reminded himself, not for the first time, that they were not Emily and Mitch Patterson.
“I’m planning to ask Julie to marry me and I’d like your blessing.”
Rose screamed and jumped up climbing over the coffee table to pull him into a hug. “Of course mijo!” she leaned back to grin at him. “Of course you have our blessing!” Then she pulled him into an even tighter hug.
Luke was still laughing at Rose’s exuberance when he felt Ray’s hand on his shoulder and turned to look up at the big man. He had tears in his eyes.
“Mijo,” he put his arms around both him and his wife. “We’ve known this day was coming since you followed Julie home from her first day of high school.”
“Yeah?” He chuckled.
It was true that he’d been completely smitten with Julie from the very first day she set foot in Los Fez and his music class. He’d been a little in love with her before she’d even opened her mouth. Captivated by her smile, her eyes and the way she looked around the room like she was assessing who she wanted to work with. Like she wasn’t the new kid but had been there all along. He’d never known anyone with that much confidence with their music, besides himself, before that day.
Then she’d sat down at the piano and he was hers if she’d have him.
“Of course Luke,” Ray smiled down at him, his arms still wrapped around him and Rose. “A blind man could see how much you love our ninita.”
Luke nodded his eyes filling up with tears. He did love her. God he loved her, more than anyone but apparently that wasn’t enough for his parents.
He swallowed the lump in his throat. “You don’t think we’re too young?”
“No mijo.” Rose shook her head as she reached up and wiped the tear that has escaped down his cheek. “I was only a year older than Julie when Ray and I got married.” She grinned at Ray over his head. “The only reason I wasn’t younger was because we’d only known each other a year.”
“Luke,” Ray squeezed his shoulder. “You’re both adults and we will support your decisions.”
He bit his lip and nodded.
They were adults no matter what his mother said. He had a place with the guys and a job. The band was booking more gigs every week and Julie would be graduating early from college in just a few months.
All of them worked so hard to make their dreams come true but none more than Julie. He was so proud of her and she inspired him every day to be a better man.
He had no doubt they’d have a recording contract within the year and he wanted her to be his wife when they made it big. Why couldn’t his parents see that?
“Thank you both.” He took a deep breath trying to calm back down from the anticipation of telling them about the proposal. He was going to propose no matter what they’d said but having their blessing meant the world to him and he knew it would mean the world to Julie.
“Your support means so much.” He looked back and forth between them and smiled. “It always has.”
Rose kissed him on the cheek, making him laugh, before stepping back. “Of course Luke,” she grabbed his hand and pulled him back toward the kitchen. “No matter what happens, you and Julie will always have a place here.”
“Where are you taking me?” he smiled as she kept pulling him out of the room.
She winked, “To eat.”
He looked back at Ray who was just standing back up from retrieving Rose’s flowers she's knocked off the coffee table in her rush to get to him. “I don’t want to disrupt your evening even more than I already have.”
“Nonsense!” Ray waved away his worry. “Stay and catch us up on what’s been going on with you, Reggie and Alex.”
He chuckled. It had been a while since they’d all been over to visit. Julie’s time was already split between school, him, the band and her parents so even she probably didn’t know everything that was going on with the guys right now.
Rose tugged on his hand pulling his attention back to her as they entered the kitchen, “And maybe tell us how you’re planning to propose?”
He bit back a grin as she left him sitting at the kitchen table while she moved around grabbing the food off the counters and Ray pulled out a vase to put the flowers in.
Maybe his parents hadn’t reacted the way he’d hoped they would when he told them he was going to ask Julie to marry him but Ray and Rose had more than made up for their disapproval with their overwhelming support.
Just like they always did.
He hoped on day his parents would see what he saw in his future.
“So…” Ray passed him a bowl full of rice. “Is Alex going to propose to Willie anytime soon?”
“Oh! Double wedding!” Rose exclaimed as she took the bowl from him.
He laughed.
If his own parents never came around he already had the best parents in the world, who would officially be his parents too one day soon… if Julie said yes.

Juke Jeudi time! This time you get a double feature. Art and a story! Enjoy.
Tumblr media
Ever since the stamps went away and Julie was able to hug her boys, things were going good in the Molina house. Although nobody knew how or why it happened, none of them complained about it. The boys could still spend time with their favorite alive person (because they still weren’t sure exactly what they were) and happy that they could still spend time with each other.
It was one of those days where things were more quiet than normal. Reggie was hanging out with Ray and Carlos, Alex was probably with Willie somewhere, and Luke was in the studio, working on a new song he and Julie had started. He hadn’t come up with any lyrics, but he’d started plucking out some notes on his guitar that fit with the melody they came up with.
Eventually all his ideas had been spilled out and he left the pages on the piano. He wasn’t sure what time it was, but Julie must be home from school now, right? He shrugged and poofed himself up to her room, hoping she’d be there.
She startled with a jump and rolled her eyes. She tried to look angry but Luke saw right through it.
“How did you even know I’d be here yet?” She asked, barely having set her backpack down by her bed.
“It was just a hunch.” He shrugged. “Whaddya say we go work on that new song?” He asked, a grin forming at the end of his lips.
“I would love to, but I just got slammed with a bunch of homework for tomorrow.” Julie sighed heavily. “And you remember what my dad said. I’ve got to focus on school first.”
“School can wait, Jules. You always get it done anyway, right?”
Once again she rolled her eyes. “Yes, but that’s not the point right now. I need to crank out some of this stuff before we go into the studio.”
Luke rolled his eyes and pouted. “C’mon… you’re sure you can’t just take a little break before working on your boring school work?”
“Yes, Luke, I’m sure. It won’t take long, okay? I promise we’ll work on it after.”
He was still pouting but nodded and sighed. “Fine. I guess we can do that.”
Julie smiled at him and grabbed one of her books out of her backpack. “You’re still more than welcome to join me. I don’t mind the company.” She said, that smile of hers turning into a smirk.
“Oh, why thank you.” He smirked back and sat on her bed.
After Julie grabbed the book, (some Shakespeare play that Luke had unfortunately recognized from his own high school days) she sat up on the bed as well. She propped herself up against the head of her bed, her pillows behind her back, and started to read.
Luke sighed quietly to himself, not so patiently waiting for when the two of them could go out to the studio. He knew that this is what she needed to do though. He knew Mr. Molina meant it when he said Julie needed to focus on school, otherwise their so-called “plug” would be pulled. And as much as he wanted to work on the song, waiting for her to finish her homework so they could still make music together was worth all his time.
Eventually Julie was about halfway done with her reading, which took shorter than Luke thought it would. She set her book down momentarily and decided to stretch.
“Jeez, I should’ve sat at my desk. That board against my back is not comfortable.” She mumbled, raising her arms up.
Luke nodded. “I can’t imagine it would be. At least the pillows help though.”
I suppose. Thankfully I don’t have much more to read, though.”
“And then we can go work on our song.” Luke said as he grinned.
“And then we can go work on our song.” Julie laughed, grabbing her book again. This time though, instead of resting against the board and her stack of pillows, she leaned up against Luke.
His eyes widened a bit and then his grin turned to a soft smile. “Sounds like a plan, boss.”
Julie laughed quietly and returned to her book. As her eyes went over the pages and the words form sentences in her head, she eventually found herself under Luke’s arm, her head not too far away from his.
He looked down at her, happy to have her in his arms. So glad he can finally hold her and be around her without being afraid that they’d never be able to touch. That they could never hold hands. That this little relationship of theirs couldn’t go anywhere. Now he felt like he didn’t need to worry about that anymore.
Her eyes glanced up and she saw his soft hazel eyes staring into her own. They looked at each other for a second, taking in each other’s beauty, until they both leaned closer and their lips locked together.
After they pulled away, Luke grinned.
“I think this little relationship of ours just got a bit more interesting.”

"You know, because of colour theory" totally sounds like something Willie would say
Throwing a housewarming party for the house they bought was something that Alex had always felt would feel very Adult. Like, they had a dining room table now. This was less 'paying your friends in pizza and beer for helping you move' (though they'd done that too) and more 'inviting your friends over a few weeks later to look at how adult you were with your unpacked house and freshly painted walls'.
The dining room table was set. There were even fresh flowers on the table, because they owned a vase now. Sure, the dinnerware was still all mismatched but it was on purpose, because Alex couldn't make up his mind on what he liked and Reggie liked thrifting and Willie enjoyed the chaos of it all. It was an aesthetic choice.
They'd gotten a grill, and Ray was on the patio showing Willie and Reggie how to use it. Alex was happy to let them, since Willie loved playing with fire and Reggie loved spending time with Ray. He preferred to be in the kitchen, checking on the garlic bread, making people drinks before getting overwhelmed and Julie reassuring him 'we know where the fridge is, don't worry about it'.
He didn't feel like a real adult. Not even with the cute little house and his two handsome boyfriends - partners, all of them on the title, which was a huge step, almost as big as marriage - and his dining room table and their beautiful homemade mailbox with all their names on it.
He wondered if he ever would, looking out from the kitchen to watch their friends mingling, Carrie and her Candis taking in the gallery wall, Luke impressed with the charcuterie board Alex had made in an attempt to make it feel like a real adult party, Julie and Flynn impressed by the bookshelves they'd put up.
Two arms snaked around his waist, and Reggie pressed a kiss to his neck. "You okay, babe?" Alex relaxed into him.
"Yeah," he said. "Just thinking about how I still don't feel like a real adult."
Reggie laughed. "That's why we have Ray. Or if we really fuck up, Julie's aunt. You know, adultier adults."
And yeah, all three of the had been pretty much adopted into the Molina family, given their own families of origin were either gone or awful. They were their own family now. Maybe that was the real meaning of adulthood.
"Stop worrying and go enjoy the party, I'll finish setting the table and stuff," Reggie said, ushering him out of the kitchen.
"Don't forget the garlic bread," Alex warned him, and went to move to join people in the living room.
Except as soon as he turned around, he heard a squelch, and a gasp, and Reggie saying 'oh no'.
He whirled around to see their kitchen, their freshly painted, freshly cleaned, perfect kitchen, covered floor to ceiling in ketchup.
"What..." he managed, as Reggie stared at him with wide eyes. The glass bottle of ketchup - because glass looked more adult than the squeezy bottles, Alex remembers thinking in the supermarket - was still in his hand. "How?"
"I was gonna give it a good shake before putting it on the table!" Reggie said helplessly.
Oh no.
"I'd already loosened all the lids," Alex said. This was all his fault. He hadn't warned Reggie. And now their kitchen was ruined.
"I'm so sorry, Alex, don't be mad," Reggie started, and Alex wasn't mad at anyone but himself. Thankfully Reggie was mostly ketchup free, so Alex grabbed some paper towels to wipe his hands and pull him into a hug. Reggie freaking out would only make him freak out. Reggie buried his face in Alex' shoulder for a moment, before collecting himself.
"Oh man, it looks like a children's hospital in here," Willie said, coming in with a plate of burgers. At Alex' confused stare, he elaborated: "You know, because of colour theory?"
That did not clear anything up, but Reggie giggled.
"I don't want to know," Alex decided. "Go serve people while I clean up this mess."
In the end, they did not need an 'adultier adult', because one of the Candis knew how to get ketchup stains off of freshly painted walls. She helped him get the worst off, and saved the garlic bread from the oven, and they joined the dinner.
And finally Alex felt a little more like an adult than he had. They'd had their first minor disaster in the house and none of them had freaked out or needed to call in a Real Adult. He was taking it as a win.

somethings abt jatp really come for the best.
Ray not being able to see the boys stopped them to sit w Julie and Carlos, talk about how it used to be at home w their own families and have the Molina's realize how these 17y/o boys were emotionally neglected by their parents.
and worse. The boys wouldn't even realize how bad it was bc it was the 90's and emotional neglect was called average parenting. So Ray would be emphatic (bc he probably had a similar treatment) and Julie would stare at them like "do u need a hug?"

seeing an object and thinking of them for Rulie please
Reggie doesn't mind early mornings at school. Getting to sit with Julie while she wakes up or half-dozes on his shoulder, flicking paper footballs at Luke, copying history notes from Alex—it's kind of nice.
There's just—something soothing about it.
He actually needs to get something out of his locker though, so he wastes a lot of time trying to remember the combination instead of making a beeline for his friends.
Why can't he remember three numbers?
A familiar hum is enough to make his mounting frustration dissipate like fog, and he waits, already smiling, fingers poised.
"It's 74-21-39."
He lets out a little cheer as his locker pops open, turning to Julie with a full-blown grin.
"Thanks, Jules. You're a lifesaver."
She ducks her head, but not before he catches a pleased flush burning along her cheekbones, visible even through her curls. She hugs herself, which is extra adorable because she's wearing a slightly oversized purple hoodie and—
And she's talking. Plus, he shouldn't stare.
"You're welcome. I would've come sooner if I'd known, but…"
"But I'm glad you did! I needed you."
She squeaks, then shakes her head.
Oh, but he loves making her flustered. She's extra extra adorable when she can only look at him through her lashes.
So maybe he can look back a little bit more openly. Maybe she'll see, maybe—
Maybe he can't help it, when it's her.
"It's no big deal," she says slowly, "I just…I have something for you. If…if you want it."
She's not just flustered. She's—nervous.
He gently clasps her by the elbows.
"Julie. You know I'll love whatever you give me because it came from you, right?"
She laughs, lifting her head a little more.
"You didn't love that cold I gave you."
"Yeah, well, that's on me for being ungrateful. The cuddles were still great."
Her shoulders shake with it when she laughs again. He's rewarded with a shine in her eyes as she fully meets his stare.
"Alright, well…"
She brings her hands out of the depths of her sleeves, and his fall away from her elbows as they unfurl, revealing—
A tiny glass bottle full of pale green liquid.
He can't look away from it. She exhales.
"I was out shopping with Flynn and I saw…there were some reds, too, and I know I painted them black for you the one time, but I had to get this one because…"
Her fingers curl back around the bottle, and his twine around hers. He looks up.
She's so adorably earnest that his heart is bound to burst—
Surely she can feel it fluttering between their fingertips as she bites her bottom lip.
"Because?" he prompts softly.
"Because it matches…your eyes."
Hers go lidded as he leans in closer, and he can't tell whose pulse is fluttering between their fingers anymore—
"Mr. Peters! Ms. Molina!"
Julie gasps as they startle apart. She fumbles for the nail polish and clutches it tight to her chest as Reggie fakes a smile for the scowling teacher headed their way.
"What's up?" he says easily.
The teacher sniffs—it's someone he had for homeroom once, but he doesn't feel too bad for not remembering their name.
"I'm sure I don't want to know. Just as I'm sure you know PDA is strictly prohibited."
Julie stammers out apologies, damn near on the verge of tears, and they actually start to soften a little bit.
She has that effect on people, he thinks.
"I suppose I can let you off with a warning this time, as it's Ms. Molina's first offense."
Julie slumps as they stalk away. She sighs, glancing at him through her lashes.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to get us in trouble."
He hums. "Oh, I dunno. I kinda did."
She gasps again, then bursts into giggles.
Her cheeks have regained that gorgeous flush, and her eyes are warm enough to—
Well, warm enough to stun you.
The warning bell pulls him back this time, but she just grins instead of jumping away. She presses the bottle into his hands.
"I guess there'll be time for trouble later."
And she presses her lips to his cheek, lightning fast, before darting off, leaving Reggie incredibly stunned once again.

Julie and the Phantoms Anniversary Rewatch!
Hehe now that I am free from church, I can begin my annual rewatch! And you have to put up with my random thoughts.
Episode 1 -
Alex's sweaty hair flip during Now or Never!!!
"Could you just own your awesomeness for once?"
Where the heck did Reggie grab that shirt and CD from???
Luke is so bouncy, I loveeee!
"That's not...okay" count - 1
Julie's emojis on her backpack strapssss!
"Oh my gosh, Flynn, don't bother coming!" But then... Flynn blows off said spirit assembly. She only goes to help Julie... Carrie's words maybe sting more than she lets on?
Julie my baby girlllll I wanna give her a hug so baddd!!!
The piano is so shiny????
Awww the disapproving look Julie gives Ray when he says he hasn't eaten... my girl has definitely gotten protective of her dad. I hate that she feels like she has to take care of him, but I love how the newly smaller Molina family is taking care of each other.
Okay but I want so very badly to look into Julie's head when she's looking around the studio before the boys show up. Just... there's so much going on behind her eyes and stuff... I repeat the need to hug her.
Lol all the screaming when the boys first show up.
Julie's cross was a Sunday School project, change my mind.
"Well, we're all a little crazy."
"Softer touch... Why are you in our studio?"
"I have been CRYING for 25 YEARS, HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?!"
*Hides the extra place setting*
Julie is a terrible liar and I love her.
The pain in Julie's face when Luke is talking about music making them feel alive I'm CRYING!!!
Okay Julie can't lie to save her life, we know this... but she so easily says she doesn't play piano. Because that's what she believes to be true...
Caleb and his frigging top hat and cape just strolling down Sunset Boulevard XD
Watch out or I'm gonna get back on my "Julie already knew Wake Up" train.... Cause like, she's barely looking at the music after a bit. So... maybe her mom showed it to her/played it to her before getting sick. (Come bug me if you wanna know more about these thoughts. There are plenty more, but this post is already getting too long.)
Carlos and Ray are so excited to hear her playing and singing!!!!
Rose's note <333333
Okayyyy I'm talking too much so I guess each ep will be its own post...

“i’m here. i promise.” for Ray Molina to any of his many children
The night of Julie’s Orpheum performance Ray’s life irrevocably changed in a way he never would have predicted. He had been expecting a change, his daughter’s band had just been the opening act for another, already very popular band. There was no way changes weren’t on the horizon.
What he hadn’t expected was to find himself filling the position of father…surrogate father?...to the rest of Julie’s band.
Julie’s band which as it turns out were not from Sweden. He’d suspected for a while that Julie had been lying, but he’d never suspected the lie was to cover up the fact her bandmates were ghosts. Ghosts that, if they hadn’t died, would be almost as old as he was. He didn’t really like to think about that.
Except after the Orpheum they weren’t quite so ghostly. Able to be seen by and interact with more and more people than Julie. . .though the rules of how and when were frustratingly unpredictable. Some days the three teenage boys were so solid they could be heard running into walls and doors where they’d normally be able to phase through. Other days Ray’s only clue they were even present was when they’d write him a note alerting him of their presence.
While difficult to track, the ever changing ghost rules somehow ended up being the least concerning things Ray had to learn about his newfound family members. Ray didn’t want to make too many assumptions but until any of the boys opened up all he had were his observations of their behavior. And each of them exhibited some worrying traits.
Today, the one causing him the most worry was Luke.
The first sign something was wrong was Luke was wearing a tawny plaid baggy flannel. Ray had been convinced the boy hadn’t even heard of a sleeve and here he was on a relatively warm day drowning in them.
Ray felt his suspicions that something was wrong with the boy were confirmed when he found him miserably sitting at the table. It’s not that Luke was incapable of being still. But that stillness usually only occurred when he was focused on music.
“I see we’re visible today.” Ray announced as he tentatively joined Luke at the table. He’d found it best to make such announcements on the off chance they weren’t already aware. Especially after the time he’d scared Reggie so bad the boy would have certainly cut his head open had he also been solid at the time.
Luke glumly hummed, unmoving from where he stared out the window. Something was definitely wrong.
“Do you need to talk about it?” Ray said, trying not to be too offended by Luke’s dubious look. “I’m here and willing to listen. I promise, I’ll just listen unless you want advice.”
It wasn’t a promise Ray would typically like to make with his kids. But sometimes his ghost children were given certain exceptions his living children weren’t, on merit of strange circumstance.
“I’ve been thinking.” Luke leaned back into his chair with a heavy sigh. “My parents might be able to see me.”
“Oh.” Ray said, the comment catching by surprise more than he suspected. He’s not sure why it never occurred to him that these boys probably had families of their own still out there. As soon as he finished with that realization he was quickly able to see what might have caused Luke’s current melancholy.
The possible opportunity to talk to his parents was being dangled in front of this poor boy like the world’s most tragic carrot. Ray couldn’t help himself, he needed to know how he could help, if he could help. “Do you want to see if they can?”
“I-” Luke started then stopped. Staringly distantly through the tears welling up in his eyes. When he finally spoke it was through barely contained sobs. “I don’t know.”
“I understand.” Ray said with a nod, debating if he should test how tangible Luke was today. The kid looked like he could use a hug, but that might press his luck further on the whole ‘promise to just listen.’ “It’s a lot to think about.”
“Yeah.” Luke mumbled through a noise that Ray had trouble distinguishing between a cry and a wry laugh.
“Well, once you do know. I’ll be here.” Ray reiterated, deciding to continue to press his luck once he caught Luke’s small smile. “Do you want to tell me about them?”
Luke chewed on his lip as his eyes examined the table in front of him. “Maybe later.”
“Whenever you’re ready.” Ray said laughing when Luke finished for him with, “You’ll be there.”

Oooo, if you're still doing them, 10 for the band? Pick your people!
ty for this one!! you said pick your people and i proceeded to not in fact pick people, so here’s 10 for everyone <3 though i guess technically it's between alex & julie lol. but hey, they're all here!
10. “Text me when you’re safe at home.”
Usually, Alex stays over at the Molinas after movie night.
They gather every Friday around dinner time, as many of their friends – most times, all of them – as are able to make it. They eat dinner with Julie’s family, who are always happy to host them, and then spread out on the Molinas’ couches. They take turns picking movies and buying snacks, but their roster ends up looking pretty similar each time: a popular movie most of them somehow haven’t seen, a terrible movie for them to talk through, and either an animated movie or a musical one. On the best days, those latter two are combined.
Tonight, Alex and Reggie have one of the couches to themselves. Willie sits with them most times, but they were unable to make it. Reggie is taking full advantage of the extra space by sprawling out on top of the entire couch, feet propped up in Alex’s lap. Flynn, Julie, and Luke share one of the larger couches. They have the worst view of the TV but the best access to the snacks, which they think is a pretty good deal.
Alex is only half paying attention to tonight’s first movie. It’s Indiana Jones, something he likes but isn’t crazy about, and unlike most others here, he’s actually seen the full movie several times. He’s content to zone out, eating some popcorn and watching his friends. Not in a creepy way, of course. In a loving way. He loves his friends.
He sinks back into the cushions a little deeper. The Molinas’ couches are much more comfortable than the one they have at the Mercers’. He could easily fall asleep on them. Half the time, he ends up doing just that. Today, however, he can’t.
For the first time in months, he’s unable to stay the night. He has a family reunion tomorrow, and his parents insist that he has to be home on time, so he’s heading out after the  first movie ends. It’s a shame, really. Alex thinks he could easily wake up early tomorrow and make it over to his parents’ place in time, but they clearly disagree, and he doesn’t want to start an argument. He’ll just enjoy the time he has with his friends while he has it.
Unfortunately, that time is flying by. Logically, Alex knows that this movie is almost two hours long. It feels like only two minutes have passed by the time the credits roll. He gently moves Reggie’s feet from his laps, sighing.
“Time to go?” Luke asks. He sounds disappointed. Alex shares the sentiment.
“Yeah,” he says, stretching out his back. “You guys have fun, though. I’ll see myself out.”
Julie scoffs. She’s already untangling herself from the blanket she and Flynn had snuggled under.
“No you won’t,” she says, joining him near the door. “We’ll walk you out. We need a break anyway.”
And so they do, all of them getting up and shuffling towards the door. They watch as Alex tugs on his shoes and grabs his jacket. Alex’s heart aches with the love he feels for them. It would’ve been so easy for them to stay put, to just call out their goodbyes and start the next movie. He wouldn’t even have been offended or anything, he would’ve understood. But they didn’t do that. Instead, they wait.
“Have fun tomorrow,” Reggie says once Alex zips up his jacket. “I hope the cake is good.”
“But maybe don’t eat the hot dogs,” Luke suggests. He has a blanket wrapped around his shoulders like a cape.
Alex snorts. “I doubt my grandparents will be serving those, but I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Do you have everything?” Flynn asks. “Phone, keys, wallet?”
Alex pats his pockets and fanny pack, confirming that he does, indeed, have everything he needs.
“Have fun with the other movies,” he says.
Reggie is the first to throw himself at him to hug him goodbye. His friends line up after that, everyone wishing him fun for the next day, and good luck for dealing with his less-than-pleasant relatives.
“Text us when you’re home safe,” Julie mumbles into Alex’s shoulder. He holds her a little tighter.
“I will,” he promises. Then, with a final look at his friends, he opens the front door and steps outside.
Twenty minutes later, he toes off his shoes and immediately heads up the stairs and to his bedroom. It’s quite late already, so his parents have gone to bed already, and now that he’s out of the cold, Alex feels the exhaustion of the week seeping into his bones. He rushes through his nighttime routine and curls up under the blankets. Once he’s comfortable, he reaches for his phone.
Alex: home safe. love you all.

I'm fine - 4
“I’m fine.”
“Then why are you crying?”
Julie gave a little sob and Luke took the last few steps into the kitchen to pull her into a hug.
“Who do I need to kill Jules? I need names.”
She choked on a laugh, “Julie Molina.”
He pulled back enough to frown at her, “Well I’m not killing you, so what happened?”
She sniffed. “I broke my dad’s favorite mug.”
He wiped the tears off her cheeks as they continued to fall, “You afraid to tell him?”
“I already did and he was as understanding as always, hugging me and telling me it was ok.” She choked on another sob. “But mami bought him that mug and now it’s just one more thing she can never buy him again.” Julie buried her face in his chest again and sobbed harder.
Luke stood there and held her as she cried herself out, rubbing her back and whispering it was going to be ok into her curls.
She eventually pushed away and wiped her face giving him a half hearted smile. “Thanks babe. I’m ok now.”
He bit his lip. “Do you still have the pieces?”
Julie frowned but nodded.
Luke shoved his hands in his pockets a little worried he might upset her again with his suggestion but thinking it was a good one. “So, um, I was thinking I could see if I can fix it?”
She gave him a sad smile before opening a drawer near them and pulling out a towel. She opened it on the counter to show him the mug split in four big chunks. Another tear slid down her cheek. “See, even if we fix it he’ll never be able to drink out of it again.”
“Oh, I know that.” He grinned and slid his arm around her waist as they looked down at the broken mug. “Sometimes when you put things back together, they’re not the same but they can still be useful.”
She looked up at him curiously. “What do you mean?”
“Well,” he let go of her and fit the pieces of the mug together checking out its size. “This is a pretty big mug. Maybe once we glue it back together it can be where your dad keeps his keys since he’s always losing them.”
Julie looked at him for a long moment. Another tear slid down her cheek despite the smile on her lips. “I love that idea.” She popped up on her toes and gave him a kiss on the cheek making him blush. “And I love you.”
