Illustrations by Justine Mara Andersen. “Star Wars Insider” Issue #60. June, 2002.
Issue #60 of the “Star Wars Insider” featured an article by Daniel Wallace titled “Who’s Who in Jabba’s Palace,” with accompanying illustrations by Justine Mara Andersen. The article listed the “The Good, The Bad, and The Goofy” and Mara’s caption, read:
Mara Jade is one of the most prominent Expanded Universe creations; in the New Jedi Order era, she’s married to Luke Skywalker. During Return of the Jedi, however, Mara Jade posed as a dancing girl named Arica on a secret mission for The Emperor. Her failure to assassinate Luke inside Jabba’s palace earned her a stern reprimand from her master, who died a few days later aboard the second Death Star. It was years before Luke discovered just how close Mara had some to unraveling his rescue plan.

You Gotta Make That Story
(above art (c) Ann Vickers)
Our student Ann came in the other day with pages of story- probably hundreds and hundreds of pages of story, in various stages of completion. Mostly incomplete. But still, hundreds of pages! I said Ann, you gotta finish this story! Because they're coming for us!
What bastion do we have?
Everything right now is designed to keep us from ourselves, and to keep us from each other. The distractions, the politics, the voter disenfranchisement, the Alexas and the phones all keep us in their system and out of the ones we create for each other...
How will we protect our sovereignty?
Art and our own stories, no matter how silly, or madcap or all over the place --->  THESE ARE OUR HEARTS.  Right now, the country's leaders and the world's leaders are colonizing our minds. They won't stop yelling, they won't stop fighting and they won't stop protecting their power. Their products and their messages and their pettiness and their rage are a constant barrage.
We need a refuge.
Lately, I've been trying to pin down what SAW does and is, and increasingly I believe the main thing is it's a place.  A place to be your best self, a place to become your art and story self, a place to guard yourself with your art and story. With others. An art fortress. Even if you never even get here, you are here.
But you gotta do that work.
You gotta find the power to light that sign that says ***YOU CAN'T HAVE ME***

Review: The Odyssey of Sergeant Jack Brennan
The Odyssey of Sergeant Jack Brennan is smart, affecting, and emotional #comics
Anyone who has been in the military and been on deployment, all have different experiences. Most people who are not or never have been in the military would even know, that there is a good number of military members who have never been and will never be on deployment. For those of who have been, we always get these pre-deployment briefings, letting us know what can we expect. This is where we…

Teratomorph
Tumblr media
Image by Justine Mara Andersen , © Wizards of the Coast. Accessed at the Monster Manual II Art Gallery here
[There’s no way that this art order wasn’t inspired by Yog-Sothoth. Although I’ve increased the teratomorph’s CR, I’ve actually toned down a lot of its abilities.]
Teratomorph This enormous creature appears to be a collection of multicolored, iridescent globes the size of a small building. Globes burst like boils to reveal long, whip-like tendrils.
Teratomorphs are creatures of pure chaos, believed to be made from the fabric of Limbo given mobility and sentience. They exist to unmake and unravel things, and destruction follows in their wake. Proteans delight in the anarchy they bring, and often shepherd them to sites where their destructive impulses will have the most effect. Fortunately, teratomorphs are extremely rare and often reclusive. Following a rampage, a teratomorph goes into a form of suspended animation that may last for decades or centuries—or until it is disturbed by the intrusion of other creatures.
Teratomorphs do not seem to need to eat or sleep in the normal sense, but gain nutrition by inflicting their warpwaves on other creatures. Teratomorphs will ignore any creature smaller than Small in size, but lash out at all others, caring more about changing its anatomy or form than actually killing it. Teratomorphs move around frequently in combat, the better to bestow their warping gift on as many creatures as possible. Against opponents capable of fighting back, they use their spell-like abilities to shape the battlefield, slowing and weakening foes and preventing them from making tactical movements of their own.

Dimensional Instability (Su) A teratomorph’s body constantly blinks and shifts in and out of phase with the plane it is on. Any attack made against a teratomorph has a 20% miss chance that is not affected by see invisibility, true seeing or similar spells and effects. A dimensional anchor or any other spell or effect that prevents dimensional travel will suppress this ability for the duration. Warp Reality (Su) All creatures within 60 feet of a teratomorph must make a DC 31 Reflex save each round or become entangled by strange matter that forms in the teratomorph’s wake. This entangling mass can be removed by dealing slashing or bludgeoning damage equal to the teratomorph’s Hit Dice (24 hp for the average specimen), or by making a successful DC 24 Strength check. A creature in the warp reality aura must make this save every round, but multiple failed saves do not stack. This entangling mass is destroyed automatically one round after the creature leaves the warp reality aura. Creatures with the chaotic subtype are immune to this ability. The save DC is Charisma based. Warpwave (Su) Any creature struck by a teratomorph’s slam attack must succeed a DC 34 Fortitude save or be affected by a warpwave. The save DC is Constitution based.

Have you ever sat dazzled in wonder by the richly detailed worlds created by your favorite artists? Have you ever wondered how those God-like artists got all those details in there?
Have you ever wondered how to get more depth in your drawings? Have you ever wondered how those detailed drawings never seem to look messy or cluttered?
Have you ever felt defeated enough to say, "I could never do that."?
All of that dazzling magic is within your reach, it is teachable. Join us, and begin unraveling the mysteries of those fabulous works of art.
DRAWING DEPTH AND DETAILS ONLINE COURSE with Justine Mara Andersen
Tumblr media
Through easy to follow visual-rich lectures and work-at-home projects that have been successfully proven for years in classrooms, you will not only learn to see that what these artists are doing is not magic, it is perfectly explainable, understandable, teachable, and therefore entirely doable!
Over the course of this class you will learn to see more clearly in ways that will carry over into your daily life. The discipline and knowledge you gain will carry you though to whatever classes you take or images you make. And in the end the classes you take are equal to the art you'll make. By the end of this class you, too, will be able to organize the details in your images into a hierarchy that is visually pleasing and will enhance rather than distract the viewer from the central point or story you are telling.
