BTS Dating Series #1: How You Meet Each Other
Members x Reader
Genre/Rate: 18+, fluff
Summary: The two of you meet for the first time.
Warnings: None to note.
Author’s Note: This is the first part of the Dating Series! If you’ve read any of my other series in the past, you should be familiar with some of these storylines but I thought it’d be nice to go back to the beginning! Today is also the four year anniversary of when I started to write BTS fanfic on this blog so thank you to everyone who has supported me thus far! I love you all and hope you enjoy it!
Kim Seokjin
Tumblr media
“I really don’t understand why you’re dragging me here,” Jin huffed as his older brother dragged him to the door of a local flower shop.
“I’m telling you, you have to meet this girl!” Seok-joong insisted as he opened the door for the two of them to step inside. “She’s so sweet and nice and a looker too, if I do say so myself.”
“Ok, even if she is, don’t you think it’s kind of weird for you to bring a random guy in here to meet her?” Jin wondered.
“Once you see her, you’ll understand,” Seok-joong replied. The customer that had been standing at the counter turned around and walked away after receiving a small bouquet and Jin let out an involuntary gasp once he saw you. You had on a shirt that had the name of the flower shop embroidered onto it and you also were wearing an apron, but Jin thought you were the most gorgeous woman that he had ever set eyes on.
“Told ya,” Seok-joong smirked when he saw how awe-struck his younger brother was. Jin didn’t pay him any attention though, instead moving over to you until he was standing at the counter.
“Hello, do you have an order?” You asked and Jin shook his head as he leaned against the counter.
“No but your gorgeous face is making me want to purchase every single flower in here,” he replied, and you felt your cheeks warming up in embarrassment.
“Well, can I help you with anything?”
“Yeah, allow me the honor of taking you out on a date,” Jin said.
“I’m sorry but I don’t even know you,” you responded.
“That’s what a date is for!” Jin exclaimed. “We can get to know each other and if you decide you hate my guts, then no harm done.”
“I doubt that I’d hate your guts,” you laughed.
“Ok, how about this? If I tell you a joke and you laugh, you have to let me take you out,” he suggested. “Ok?”
“Alright.
“What does the universe do when it wants to have a party?” He asked and you shrugged your shoulders. “They planet.” Despite your efforts to hold back, you couldn’t help the smile that broke out onto your face that was quickly followed by a loud giggle. “So, what do you say?”
“Ok, you can take me out,” you relented.
“Great, we can exchange numbers?” Jin offered, smiling widely when you nodded in agreement.
Min Yoongi
Tumblr media
“Hey, don’t look now,” your best friend, making you look up at her. “But Suga from BTS is checking you out.”
“Shut up,” you chuckled. “Where?”
“Over your shoulder, to your right,” she told you and trying to play it cool, you glanced over your right shoulder and sure enough, you saw him sitting at the bar with a glass of dark liquid in his hand.
“Hm, he’s cuter in person than he is on TV,” you joked as you turned back to look at your best friend.
“You’re terrible Y/N,” she laughed. “Oh shit, he’s headed this way.”
“Seriously?”
“Yep,” she nodded, sliding off of her stool and standing up straight. “I’m gonna let you have your moment but if he turns out to be a weirdo, don’t be afraid to yell, ok?”
“Alright,” you agreed before watching her walk away. As you went back to sipping your drink, you felt a sudden tap on your shoulder and when you turned your head to look, you saw him standing right in front of you.
“Hello,” he said. “I’m Min Yoongi.”
“Y/N L/N,” you replied, extending your hand and shaking his that was already outstretched. “So, am I special to you or something?”
“Huh?”
“You introduced yourself as Min Yoongi and not Suga,” you told him.
“Oh, well I always use my real name with important people,” he said.
“And you think I’m gonna be important?”
“Let’s just say...I have a hunch,” he smirked.
“Well, why don’t you buy me a drink so that we can test out that hunch?” You suggested and Yoongi nodded his head as he sat down on the stool next to you.
Kim Namjoon
Tumblr media
“Hey, you almost ready?” Yoongi asked Namjoon as they stood backstage at a local underground hip hop club. “It’s almost time for us to go up.”
“Yeah, I’m ready,” Namjoon nodded. As a way to have some fun and as a little treat for whatever ARMYs might be in attendance, Namjoon and Yoongi had decided to go back to the underground hip hop club that they frequented pre-debut and do a set there.
“Alright, how we feeling tonight?” The announcer asked the crowd, being met by large cheers. “As a special event, we have two of the rappers from the idol group BTS performing tonight so please, give them a round of applause!” Namjoon and Yoongi ran up onto the stage then, waving to the crowd that was up on their feet at the sight of the two men who were considered legends in the underground scene.
“I’m Bangtan Sonyeondan’s Rap Monster,” Namjoon introduced himself.
“I’m Bangtan Sonyeondan’s Suga,” Yoongi said before waving to the crowd. “We’re gonna do a few songs for you guys, if that’s alright?” The crowd cheered wildly and with that, the music started and the show began. As they performed, Namjoon couldn’t help but to notice a woman standing on the right side of the stage who was dancing along to the music, vibing and singing along to every lyric. Now, he always noticed the fans that had that type of energy but something else was drawing him towards you.
What felt like all too soon to Namjoon, their set ended and the crowd went wild. As soon as they stepped off stage, Namjoon walked over to where you were standing, making your eyes widen when you noticed him approaching you.
“Uh, hi,” Namjoon said awkwardly.
“Hello,” you smiled.
“I couldn’t help but to notice you from the stage,” he murmured. “You’re familiar with our songs?”
“You could call me a fan,” you nodded. “And I saw how you kept looking over in my direction.”
“Well, would you maybe want to go out sometime?” Namjoon asked. “That is, if you want to, and if you’re single, and if-”
“I’d love to,” you cut him off, laughing at how shocked he looked to be cut off. “What day is good for you?”
Jung Hoseok
Tumblr media
"Y/N!" Your friend Seo-hyun exclaimed as she opened the door to her apartment.
"Hi Seo," you giggled as she surged forward and threw her arms around you in a hug. "Happy birthday."
"Thank you!" She smiled, letting you go and waving you into the apartment. You stepped inside, looking around to see that the party was well underway although it had only started an hour prior.
"Go mingle," Seo-hyun encouraged you. "I think Mina and Chaeyoung and the others are in the kitchen."
"Ok cool," you nodded with a smile and with a last one armed hug, you walked into the kitchen where sure enough, Mina and Chaeyoung and some of your other friends were hanging out.
"Hi Y/N!" Mina exclaimed.
"Hi guys," you greeted everyone, even though there were two new faces that you didn't recognize.
"Y/N-ah, this is Park Jimin and Jung Hoseok," Chaeyoung introduced them and you smiled.
"Hi," you said.
"Nice to meet you Y/N-ssi," Jimin replied.
"Yes, very nice to meet you," Hobi smirked, making you roll your eyes.
"Any drinks in here?" You asked Mina. "Work sucked today and I need some alcohol."
"I'll make you something," Mina giggled. As she set about making your drink, everyone else fell into conversation and you somehow ended up next to Hoseok.
"So, are you single?" Hobi wondered.
"You know, you could ask how I'm doing first," you shot back.
"Ok. How are you?" He asked and you raised an eyebrow at him.
"I'm...fine," you replied. "How are you?"
"Great, now that I've met you," he smirked and you couldn't help but to chuckle.
"Do other girls really fall for those lines?"
"Usually, most girls do," he admitted with a nod. "I'm a little surprised that they're not working on you though, not gonna lie."
"Here's your drink Y/N," Mina said as she handed you a cup. You took it from her, turning around to face Hoseok afterward.
"Well, I'm not most girls," you smirked before turning and walking out of the kitchen.
"Don't I know it?" Hobi smiled to himself.
Park Jimin
Tumblr media
“Jimin, let’s go over what we’re going to do in the next competition,” Hobi said but he stopped when he saw that Jimin was standing in place, seemingly frozen. “Jimin-ssi? Hello? Jiminie?”
“Huh?” Jimin said as he snapped out of his thoughts and looked over at Hobi. “Oh, sorry hyung. What were you saying?”
“I was talking about the competition but something else clearly has your attention,” Hobi chuckled.
“Not something hyung, but someone,” Jimin murmured, motioning with his head over to his right. When Hobi looked over, he saw you talking to a member of Twice but he had never seen you before so he figured that you might be a part of their management or something. One thing he did know though: you were absolutely gorgeous.
“Holy shit,” Hobi muttered. “She’s beautiful.”
“So beautiful,” Jimin nodded and Hobi could recognize that lovesick look from anywhere.
“Go talk to her,” Hobi encouraged.
“I can’t! What if she’s working?” Jimin shot back. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, Hobi walked over to where you were now standing alone.
“Hello, I’m j-hope from BTS and my member and dongsaeng over there, Jimin,” Hobi said as he pointed over his shoulder. “He thinks you’re gorgeous and wants to talk to you, but he’s too worried that you’re working.”
“I’m not working,” you giggled. “Tell him to come over here.”
“Great,” Hobi grinned before turning around and walking back to Jimin. “She’s not working and she wants to talk to you too o go for it.”
“Thanks hyung,” Jimin sighed before walking over to you. “Hello, I’m Park Jimin.”
“Y/N L/N,” you replied.
“So, are you just a fan of Twice then?” He wondered, motioning to the Twice lightstick in your hand.
“Kind of,” you confirmed. “Jihyo and I have been friends since we were kids so I came to support them.”
“Well, I saw you over here and thought you were gorgeous,” he gushed, making you smile. “Do you think, maybe, you’d want to go out with me sometime?”
“Sure,” you nodded. “I’d like that, Jimin-ssi.”
Kim Taehyung
Tumblr media
“Come on Y/N!” Your friend, Yoona, whined.
“I said no,” you chuckled.
“But this guy is perfect for you!” She exclaimed. “He’s funny and unique and nice and kind of out there, if I’m being honest.”
“Oh wow, sounds exactly like the opposite of what my type is,” you laughed.
“Well, that can be a good thing,” Yoona shot back. “And besides, after your last boyfriend, it’s probably a good idea for you to go outside of your comfort zone.”
“Yoona.”
“Just give the guy a chance,” she begged. “Please?”
“Fine,” you relented to her excited squeals. “Do I at least get to know who this guy is?”
“Nope because if I tell you, you won’t go,” she replied. “Just trust me, please.”
“Alright,” you replied wearily. That’s how exactly how you found yourself walking into an upscale restaurant in Seoul four days later, dressed impeccably.
“Hello, reservation for Kim at 7:30?” You said to the maître d and he nodded before leading you through the restaurant and to a table in the back of the room. Sitting there, to your disbelief, was Kim Taehyung, who was better known as V from BTS.
“Holy shit,” you uttered and Taehyung chuckled as he stood up from the table. “Is this a joke?”
“Are you Y/N?” He asked, waiting until you nodded your head to continue. “Well, then it’s not a joke.”
“You’re Yoona’s friend?” You huffed.
“That I am,” Taehyung confirmed. “If this is too weird for you, you don’t have to stay.”
“No, no, I’m just surprised,” you chuckled. “But I’ll stay.”
“Good,” Taehyung smirked. “Because I’d love to get to know you.”
Jeon Jungkook
Tumblr media
So, who's all coming today?" You asked your friend Hyoyeon as you both stood outside of Lotte World, waiting for your other friends to arrive.
"The usual people," she shrugged. "Soo-jung, Jaehyun, Byung-soo, Sung-wan, and Yerim. Oh, and Jungkook."
"Jungkook?" You echoed. "Jeon Jungkook, from BTS? The super shy one?" You knew of Jungkook, seeing as though the two of you went to the same high school. However, due to his commitments to the group, he was never there often.
"Yep, that one," Hyoyeon confirmed.
"He doesn't seem like the hangout type," you murmured. "He was always super shy in school."
"Well, he was also never there," Hyoyeon pointed out. "I'd be nervous in a place that I barely went to as well. But don't worry, Jaehyun said that he's cool once you get to know him."
"Alright," you shrugged. Just then, a large group of people came bounding up to you and you instantly recognized them as your friends. You all exchanged greetings and once you got to Jungkook, you smiled before bowing slightly at him.
"Hello," you greeted happily. "I'm Y/N."
"I remember, from school," Jungkook smiled as he bowed to you. "Jeon Jungkook."
"I remember," you repeated, making him chuckle. As you looked him over, Jungkook definitely seemed different than what you remembered him as. In school, he was always shrugging in on himself, almost as if he were trying to make himself disappear and he hadn't fully grown into his facial features either. Now, he stood tall (and tall he was) and squared his shoulders as he greeted everyone with what was possibly the brightest smile you had ever seen in your life.
For Jungkook, you were just as beautiful as he remembered you to be. He'd see you around school and he always thought that you were gorgeous when you listened animatedly to the things that your friends had to say. He would try to work up the courage to talk to you but he never seemed to be able to and before he knew it, you both graduated and he never saw you again.
Until today.
"So, who's ready to go have fun?!" Soo-jung exclaimed and everyone cheered as you headed towards the entrance. As you all did, Jungkook grabbed onto Jaehyun's shirt sleeve and pulled him back in order to whisper to him.
"What's the deal on Y/N?" He wondered and Jaehyun looked at him quizzically.
"What do you mean?"
"Is she single, or seeing someone?" Jungkook elaborated.
"Oh," Jaehyun laughed in understanding. "No, she's single but I don't know if you wanna go barking that tree up."
"Why not?"
"Y/N can be very....outspoken and opinionated and I don't know if she'd be willing to talk to you in that way," Jaehyun explained.
"Why not?" Jungkook questioned. "I'm not as shy as I used to be!"
"No, I know but still," Jaehyun shrugged. "Look, if you wanna try to talk to her, go for it. All I'm saying is don't be surprised if it doesn't work out." As Jaehyun turned and ran to catch up with the group, Jungkook couldn't help but to smile to himself.
"Oh, I'm gonna go for it alright," Jungkook muttered to himself before jogging after his friends.

Drama rec masterlist | Drama rant thread (beware of spoilers)
Tumblr media
I had so much fun watching this drama. It's one of those dramas where Tumblr just forms this little community around a drama as it airs, and I was lucky enough to be able to be a part of it almost from the very beginning.
This drama had so many twists and turns and cliffhangers, and I had such a good time freaking out over everything with people on here.
The drama was actually genuinely funny, and though I may not have laughed out loud, I definitely found myself doing the huff laugh a lot. They knew what they were doing, and the jokes just landed every single time.
It does get dark at times too though, and I do have to make a trigger warning for blood, murder, mental illness, self-harm, suicides and just a very uncomfortable and creepy villain.
Jeong Gu-won is not the brooding, gloomy type of male lead you might think when reading what the drama is about. Instead, he's a drama queen with a flair for fashion. He's childish and whiny, but also openly caring and loving - very golden retriever coded, actually. It sounds weird, but it really works so well for this drama.
And oh my god, I love Do Do-hee so much. She's a boss ass bitch when she needs to be, but is actually just as much a whiny drama queen as Gu-won. She knows what she wants and will do whatever it takes to get it, but also knows when it's time to stop and take a step back.
And the two of them are such a good match! Petty and childish, all with their own huge baggage of trauma that they help each other unpack. And they usually communicate their feelings well with each other. The drama doesn't rely on miscommunication as a way to create drama - if something happens, they resolve it almost immediately, and I love that.
The overall murder-mystery and who-did-what managed to throw things at me that I sometimes didn't see coming, which was nice.
If I do have to say something more negative, the drama does at times feel a little superficial in a way I can't quite explain. I did see some people complain about the same - that it felt plastic sometimes. And they do make some decisions - especially towards the last half of the drama - that I might not really be 100% into. The first half of the drama is definitely the best part.
But overall, I still had such a good time watching, and it's definitely one I'll rewatch again someday.

Ko-fi - Voluntary Tip for Readings
Tumblr media
Most to Least Romantic Member of Xdinary Heroes
Jun Han - 43 Magic, 6 of Wands
Jun Han is the most romantic member of Xdinary Heroes. Romance is really his thing, he’s at the top of his game there. He can make his lover swoon from his romantic gestures and acts of service. He’s the master of courtesy and seduction and every new romantic relationship is a reason for him to celebrate and reach the sky. Jun Han is a true Prince Charming when it comes to love. He can win the heart of anyone he desires like if he put a love spell on them. On the other hand, a breakup can be truly devastating for Jun Han, especially for his ego. He might feel very miserable about it and it takes him a good while to heal his self-esteem.
Jungsu - 32 Marine Life, 3 of Cups
Jungsu is the second most romantic member of Xdinary Heroes. He’s really a ray of sunshine when it comes to romance and he’s a playful romantic. He might not be the demon of lust but he’s a real companion to his lover. He’s not only their sweetheart but also a best friend. He literally takes on any role his lover is currently in need of. He’s supportive, caring and has original ideas on how to spend time together. He genuinely likes to include his lover into the circle of his friends and family, he will incorporate them into his life. Jungsu truly shows his affection to everyone. And that’s likely a reason for his breakups. He might be accused of cheating while he’s actually just really friendly and sweet to all people. Breakups leave him rather desperate and in tears for a while but because he surrounds himself with friends, he can overcome the hurt with their help.
Gunil - 28 Music, 10 of Coins
Gunil is in the middle when it comes to romance. He’s pretty mature when it comes to love affairs and he can truly sense what his lover needs well. But he’s also pretty realistic and pragmatic. He will treat his lover like a royalty but at the same time he will acknowledge their imperfections and opinions. He’s really a team player in romance and expects his lover to give as much as he does to the relationship. He’s not really good at wording his feelings but his steady and undying support is like a warm blanket his lover can hide in to escape the world. Gunil feels any breakup deeply but he’s not the type to cry over it. He learns the lesson and next time he will improve his approach.
Gaon - 26 Pressure, 0 The Fool
Gaon is close behind Gunil when it comes to romance. He approaches love and romance with curiosity and nearly scientifical passion. He’s open to anything but can become reckless and lose focus easily. Gaon might easily forget about birthdays and anniversaries and then be surprised by his lover being mad at him. He likes to be in love but it’s more like he’s enjoying the sensations rather than he would actually feel a connection with the person. Gaon isn’t the one to suffer much with the breakup as he’s really curious about what comes next in his life.
O.de - 17 Cave, 8 of Coins
O.de is the second least romantic member of Xdinary Heroes. For him, romance is labour foremost. He’s not really into it and when he tries to be romantic it feels forced and awkward for him. He knows he needs more practice but it’s not his current priority. He might give a cold and detached impression. His heart beats for the other person but he doesn’t know how to let them know and simply focuses on what he’s good at, which is work. Breakup is something he usually expects and he’s not really surprised or devastated by it. He takes it as it is, maybe spends some time alone to lick his wounds and then go back to work.
Jooyeon - 1 North, 7 of Swords
Jooyeon is the least romantic member of Xdinary Heroes. Not that he wouldn’t ever fall in love but he’s not likely to see it as his life’s purpose. He focuses on other things and can’t be bothered by romance. It’s also possible he’s had a bad experience with romantic relationships when he felt being manipulated through his feelings and used. Jooyeon is not likely to fall in love easily and he’s not likely to express his feelings openly. When he senses like the relationship is closing to its end, he will be the one to break up with his lover in order to avoid being jilted.
Tumblr media
I don't know Xdinary Heroes at all so please, take this very lightly. I would truly appreciate your opinion on this piece.
Thank you for reading!

Kim Do-Hyun (’97) was a friend Sujin made while she was still attending university. They met through mutual friends while out drinking (before she was scouted), but back then, they both had zero feelings for each other (Sujin was happily single, and Do-Hyun already had a girlfriend) and they weren't very close friends either.
However, they remained in contact until Sujin dropped out in 2018 to focus on her upcoming debut, and Do-Hyun joined the military that same year. He had no idea where she disappeared to because he, along with most of her other uni friends, never knew she was a trainee. Eventually, a little while after her debut, he started to see her face on social media. He's not into Kpop at all, but once he noticed Sujin, he began watching NOVELLA's performances out of curiosity.
They finally reunited in 2020 (pre-lockdown) during a military dischargement party with some of their mutual friends. After their reunion, they became a lot closer, and Do-Hyun even started developing a little crush. This time around, Sujin was dating someone else (an idol), but they quickly broke up due to covid. It definitely took Sujin a lot longer to fall for Do-Hyun after breaking up with her boyfriend. Dating as an idol, especially with a non-celeb, is extremely hard, and she didn't want to ruin the friendship they had.
In September 2021, when covid restrictions 'started lifting' and idol life was beginning to go back to ‘normal’, Do-Hyun just decided to bite the bullet and ask her out. (The exact scenario was something like; Sujin said she would probably be going on tour in January, and Do-Hyun couldn't wait any longer to ask her out). Sujin initially protested, saying that it wouldn't work and yada yada yada, but it just went in one ear and out the other. They have now been dating for over two years and have even met eachothers families.
THEY'RE END GAME YOUR HONOUR!! (ノД`)ノ
♡ Kim Haeun + ? (2022 - 2022)
Haeun has had a couple of boyfriends, but none of them were really memorable. Her most recent boyfriend was also an idol, as are most of her exes, and they had a very quiet relationship that eventually ended due to conflicting schedules and dying feelings.
The relationship lasted, maybe 9 months or so? And I think after this, Haeun decided that dating is kind of a waste of time for her since she feels like it won't lead to anything, at least not for the next 5 years.
Since her breakup, she has yet to engage in anything 'serious ' or 'exclusive '.
♡ Choi Aecha + ? (2020 - 2023)
OK, so... Aecha's love life is kinda messy.
She has/has had some major co-dependency issues which attracted some questionable men.
The current man in question was OK at first. They originally broke up mid covid because they never got to see each other, but afterwards, they began a weird 'on and off' situation. Between 2021-2022, they had broken up at least 5 times, and it was mostly because our 'king' got caught cheating on her with multiple different girls.
But Aecha, being stupidly gullible and emotionally dependent, would take him back. every. time.
The man would go from 'I'm so sorry baby I didn't mean to, I was just drunk and lonely when you were out of town', to, 'well maybe I wouldn't be seeing other girls if you payed more attention to me', to, 'do you even still love me?! In fact, I should be breaking up with you!'
In early 2023, after a particularly rough fight, members Haeun, Sujin, and Dambi staged an intervention where they finally convinced Aecha to break it off for good. Since then, she has not been in contact with her ex at all, and is taking an overall break from dating.
♡ Yoon Eunjeong + Ahn Min-Seok (2023 - present)
Ahn Min-Seok (’96 ) is a famous Korean actor (oc) who mainly stars in romance Kdramas. Eun-Jeong is friends with a lot of actors, so they met for the first time during a mutual friends’ birthday party (April). They've only been dating for like a month or two (Oct), but started ‘talking’ back in April.
♡ Kim Dambi + Bae Ji-Woo (2019 - 2020)
NOOO, THEY SHOULD'VE BEEN END GAME ( TДT)
So basically, Dambi is a lesbian. Her and Ji-Woo dated for about 9 months (Sept - May) and they were literally in love, in fact, Dambi is definitely still in love with her and has made multiple songs for/about her (e.g. Oh My God).
Unfortunately, homophobia is real 💔, and they both knew that they'd likely never be able to freely be a couple, which wasn't fair on either of them. So, they mutually decided to break it off on good terms, but it hurt too much to remain as friends so they decided to cut contact.
♡ Kang Nari + ? (2023 - 2023)
Another typical relationship with another random idol.
Yada yada yada, conflicting schedules, blah blah blah, mutual break up.
Nari has had a few other relationships that have ended similarly, but unlike Haeun, she's still striving to find her dream SuHyun relationship.
♡ Hiramatsu Aina + Not Applicable (∞)
_| ̄|○ she's actually a loser.
She has 0 idol friends outside her group, and I mean literally 0.
It's not like she doesn't want friends, she just genuinely can't make any (anxiety is a disease). Also she's very busy, like she probably spends 90% of her free time producing music or something, she is ADDICTED.
She wants to be in a relationship and doesn't at the same time. On one hand, she's envious of Sujin and all of the couples minus Aecha's situation surrounding her, but at the same time, she doesn't want a partner taking up her already nonexistent free time.

Short Kdramas/Drama Special/Web Drama
Part 1
From time to time I go through the well-known "drama hangover". Even if I try to balance my backlog, don't start too many dramas with diversified stories at the same time, even if I choose only one favorite to follow... it doesn't matter, the routine will run over all my plans and I end up not having the courage or the will to watch anything. Usually when this kind of thing happens, I look for short dramas, with plots that I don't need to think too much, just watch, smile, fall in love and that's it, move on. So I remembered to list these short dramas I've seen and give my recommendations.
Part 2 here
Part 3 here
Splash Splash Love
Tumblr media
Splash Splash Love, the 2015 minidrama with only 2 episodes made me so immensely happy. The story is about a high school student Jang Dan-bi (Kim Seul Gi). Running away from a maths test she finds herself in a playground. Unconsciously, she goes into a puddle and is suddenly transported to the Joseon period. There she meets King Lee-do (Yoon Doo-joon). My review here.
After the Rain
Tumblr media
Kim Kang Woo is my soft spot and this 2 episode drama special seemed to call to me. And good thing too because this show is excellent. This is a comedic human drama about Bong Gil who is forty years old, single and tired of taking care of his 90 year old father. My review here.
The Reason I'm Getting Married
Tumblr media
Two very good reasons to check out this drama - Song Jun Ho and Hong Jong Hyun. 😍 The story is about a woman (Park Hee Bon) who is about to marry her long-time boyfriend and meets a friend from the past who has a crush on her. My review here.
Came to me and Became a Star
Tumblr media
This story is about Gang Seok (Kim Ji Suk) and Ha Jin (Jung So Min). Both are struggling to stay afloat in life when they meet and fall in love. Review here.
Review Notebook of My Embarrassing Days
Tumblr media
Another KBS Drama Special starring Jeon So-min and Park Sung-hoon. Do Do-Hye (Jeon So-Min) is a mathematics teacher and has an overly honest personality, which makes her face embarrassing moments. She keeps a diary where she writes down all these embarrassing moments and reflects on herself. My review here.
Handmade Love
Tumblr media
Because this web drama has Lee Soo Hyuk as the lead actor, I had to go see what it was all about. This is about Woven (Lee Soo Hyuk) who is a god who sinned by touching the coat of a goddess and his punishment is to live on Earth and make clothes that cure humans of their sadness.
I think Lee Soo Hyuk is perfect for the role of a god with that perfect elegance and ethereal looks. And I want to thank whoever thought he should wear high collars and fluffy pullovers. ❤️
The first thing that struck me was the luxurious appearance of the small shop. The clothes were beautiful and the furniture looked wonderful and magical.
I liked the stories of the humans he had to heal as they seemed solid and with good messages but I also felt they were rushed, maybe because it was only 8 episodes. So the concept was very cute but the execution was not very efficient.
The Universe's Star
Tumblr media
"The Universe's Star" is written and directed by Kim Ji Hyun, known for "Splash Splash Love". That, and having my beloved Suho/Kim Jun Myeon in the cast made me want to watch this drama. This is the love story between a talented singer-songwriter Woo Joo (Kim Jun Myeon) and Byul (Ji Woo), a 19-year-old student who turned into a grim reaper after dying in an accident.
This show has stayed in my heart forever because although it only has 6 half hour episodes, it has more depth than some regular length dramas. Each episode had the ability to make me think and feel, and themes such as the meaning of life, self-worth or appreciating the present came up regularly in my thoughts.
While I can't say that the acting of the main actors was excellent I really enjoyed the OTP arc. The ending is quite emotional and moving and although it left me crying it also left my heart full.
I also have to mention the friendship between Byul and Gakshi (ghost). Though they should be "enemies" a friendship is formed and it is a pleasure to see them together.
Queen of the Ring
Tumblr media
It's a cute and romantic mini-series of only 6 half-hour episodes. It's perfect for those who don't have time to devote to an entire series of 16 episodes or more and the content is light and heartfully.
Story is about an ugly girl, Nan Hee (Kim Seul Gi) who one day receives a ring that holds a family secret. Due to the magic ring, she dates Se Gun (Ahn Hyo Seop) who is a handsome guy but has a cold-blooded personality and struggles to see her as his ideal type.
I have a crush on Kim Seul Gi and I thought she gave Nan Hee a spunky personality even though she's so insecure about her physical appearance. And, as always, the emotional moments of this drama were delivered by her in a touching way.
I didn't feel very good about the premise of this drama and the idea of the "ugly girl" liking a boy who was only interested in physical appearances was not winning me over. However, the drama showed me that it had a message behind the original idea that left me quite satisfied with the end result.
Romance Full of Life
Tumblr media
It's about In-Sung (Yoon Si Yoon) who is preparing for the exam to become a police officer for 4 years. He fails the exam 8 times, but he still has a positive personality. He then applies for the high paying part-time job which is titled "Full Life Experience". And then his life changes.
Of the Three Colors of Fantasies trilogy, this was the weakest for me. What I liked: I loved Yoon Si Yoon in this drama. I thought he looked adorable as a geek with those chrome glasses and that ruffled hair.
I liked that he turned into some sort of superhero and stopped being a weakling but I hated some of his actions and the way it changed him for the worse.
The OTP was okay.
Two Lights: Relumino
Tumblr media
For three years Seo In-Soo (Park Hyung-sik) has been facing partial blindness. Looking for a new leisure activity, he joins a photography club for people with visual limitations. That's when he meets Ahn Soo-Young (Han Ji-min) - a young woman who is part of the group of students.
The story shows the daily struggles each has to go through due to their physical limitations, as well as the bond that is developed between them as they get to know each other better.
This short film is to make people aware of Samsung's Relumino device so the running time of the film is only 30 minutes, so the story is developed quickly but manages to be sweet, sensitive and beautiful.
And I liked the message of hope, inner strength and independence in the midst of darkness.

Sound of BTS: K-Pop super band decode their success
Tumblr media
New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Few names in the world of music today evoke global hysteria as the K-Pop super band BTS. With a following of 30.1 million on Twitter and 42.6 million on Instagram, the group, who made their debut in 2013, have smashed their own record with their latest track "Butter", which garnered 10 million views on YouTube in just 13 minutes upon release.
BTS, or Bangtan Sonyeondan, are a septet comprising Jin, SUGA, j-hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. The band is also known as the Bangtan Boys and, like any celebrities worth the delirium they unleash, have a name for their fans, too. They call their ever-burgeoning fan base ARMY (the all-caps stylisation is perhaps meant to underline the frenzy).
Opening up with IANS in a candid tete-a-tete, the South Korean band decode their skyrocketing worldwide success.
"I'm guessing our sincerity reached our audience. We've tried our best to deliver sincere music and performances," says V, whose real name is Kim Tae-hyung. Known for his deep voice, Tae, 25, who kind of carry the symbol of 'tiger', is the fashion icon for the group -- as the ARMY says if you need something to become trend just put it on V. He literally pulls off anything.
J-Hope (Jung Hoseok) pitches in: "And we have always shown our fans all our behind-the-scenes through various contents. I think opening ourselves up without hesitation helped us convey our sincerity." In fact their opening up to the fans even before their debut and literally living every moment of their growth as singers, performers and growing up from boys to men in front of the camera has endeared them more.
Their trials and tribulations, as they went from a one-room dorm in Seoul to the mega HYBE building in 2020 is the stuff of legend. Along the way their hardships -- of sometimes making it through the week with just Bulgogi (fire meat) to distributing posters on the streets of L.A. for their first concert in the US -- that saw few takers in 2014, to today's phenomenal chartbusters -- ON (February 2020), Dynamite, Life Goes On, Film out, and Butter (within the span of just over one year) -- is a journey they have shared with the fans on Bangtan Gayo, RUN-BTS (an absolute stress buster), BTS in the SOOP, among others.
The rise of the band has been a phenomenon that has not only reorganised the contemporary mainstream music scene all over the world, but has also defined the shifting socio-politics of showbusiness. The success of BTS, after all, has widely been seen as a triumph of inclusivity. In turn, the band, which started out as a hip hop group, evolved quickly to adapt to a larger market.
And all this success, despite almost all-Korean lyrics in all their songs, until the all English single Dynamite in August 2020. Today, they sing in English to connect with their worldwide ARMY.
ARMY, the band has said time and again, is intrinsic to their growth. Wider reach and a growing fan base ensures better feedback, they point out, and BTS is one band that is known to listen to their fans.
"When we go on tour, we get to perform a lot and that helps me improve," says Kim Seok-jin (Jin). j-hope, who is Mr. Sunshine of the group and has the trademark intro "I am your Hope, You are my Hope..." adds that the feedback they get for their songs has worked because it tells the band which areas to focus on in order to grow.
"I was able to check what I lacked and what I had to pay more attention to," he explains. j-hope is the main dancer, who is a hard task master for the group when it comes to grooving. Known for his agile moves, he is that guy, who almost left the BTS at one time just before debut, but was destined to return -- as the love between the members could not keep him away.
He is one of the three rappers along with Leader RM (Rap Moster or Kim Nam-joon) and Min Yoongi or Suga. In fact, Hobi, as he is lovingly called wanted to be in the vocal line -- that has V, Jin, Park Jimin and Jeon Jung Kook. But gave it away to V, the surprise member of the group on debut, as is known from a number of their documentaries along the way -- Burn the Stage, Bring the Soul, and Break the Silence.
V credits new experiences to their growing popularity. "We encounter new things and our stage always gets bigger, so it does give me pressure. However, I tried to expand my mindset so that I don't make mistakes," he says.
For RM, like everyone else, the pandemic has had an impact. "I think the current pandemic situation played a big part because we needed to change, whether we wanted to or not. Thus, during Covid, we were able to release 'Dynamite', 'BE', and 'Butter'," he points out.
Jimin, who was the last member to be finalised in the group and trained only for six months before debut on June 13, 2013, says the challenge is about seeking out the right direction when it comes to improving one's performance. "I couldn't really find an answer to what I should do to improve, but if I can find a better direction, I will be able to take a step forward," Jimin says.
The need to grow guides them all. Jung Kook, the main vocalist, and the Golden Maknae, for instance, says he is driven by the constant need to "grow and evolve".
"I think the biggest factor is that I always feel like I'm lacking and I have the continual ambition to get cooler," says Jung Kook. The youngest member, who will turn 24 this year, has given us five makeovers in six months -- blonde, blue, mint-choco, silver, and purple -- and each time fans have loved it. Currently with his purple hair, Jung Kook did the impossible -- losing weight in five days as he said while shooting for Butter.
The conversation shifts to their interestingly-named title tracks. The band says their process of selecting the title track of a BTS album is simple. "We usually select the song that best shows the overall message and theme of the album," RM says.
Which brings one to their latest track "Butter", which premiered on May 20. The song currently has 277,508,962 views on YouTube and 16 million likes. It is also No 1 ofn the Billboard Hot 100, as well as many other charts.
Jin, the self proclaimed 'World Wide Handsome', feels the song is a rage because it works perfectly as "BTS' summer song!" Jung Kook recalls the fun that the band had while shooting it, and attributes that energy to its success.
"The song itself is exciting and fun, so we were full of energy when we recorded it," Jung Kook notes.
"I think 'Butter' is special because it encapsulates our charms," Jin sums it up for the song, the band and the band's ever-growing aura.
With just days left for their 8th anniversary, BTS has their hands full.

"Divorced by agreement 2 years ago" Choi Doo-ho, confession of private life
Tumblr media
'Korean Superboy' Choi Doo-ho confessed about his divorce for the first time.
The SBS entertainment program 'Running Man', which aired on the afternoon of the 15th, was decorated with a special feature of 'Sparking Salary Fighter', and Kim Dong-hyun, Choo Sung-hoon, Jung Chan-sung, and Choi Doo-ho appeared as guests.
On this day, Jeon So-min looked at her face as her lipstick got on her teeth while having a conversation with the guests. Then, Yoo Jae-seok pointed out, "All four of you are married," drawing laughter.
Choi Doo-ho jumped up from his seat and surprised everyone by confessing, "I'm sorry, but I divorced under the agreement."
Then Yoo Jae-seok corrected, "I will update with the latest news. (Choi Doo-ho) is currently single."
Choi Doo-ho showed off his anti-war charm by repeatedly mentioning the fact of the divorce coolly, saying, "It's been two and a half years since I got divorced. I got married, but I got divorced."
Viewers reacted enthusiastically to Choi Doo-ho's appearance as an entertainer who was 180 degrees different from his beast-like appearance in the ring. Immediately after the broadcast, some viewers said, "Choi Doo-ho's shy and cool appearance is cute", "It would have been difficult for him to confess his personal life, but he is honest and nice to see", "I rather like him because he is completely different from Octagon."
Meanwhile, Choi Doo-ho has a mixed martial arts record of 14 wins and 4 losses and a UFC record of 3 wins and 3 losses. He is set to return to the UFC in February and is currently appearing on the SBS entertainment program 'Pure Fighter'.

Drama rec masterlist | Drama rant thread (beware of spoilers)
Tumblr media
This drama is unsurprisingly a lot like its "prequel" which is, of course, Strong Woman Do Bong-soon. Which is both a good and a bad thing, because I like the original drama a lot, but it also means that I kept comparing the two. And honestly, the original is better if you ask me.
Both dramas have this thing where it's a comedy drama overall, but it has these really dark themes and scenes that just feel so out of place because they keep undermining it with something funny. The balance just isn't there for me - I had the same problem with Strong Woman Do Bong-soon, but I still feel that they handled it a bit better. A drama that handles that balance really well, though it may be hard to compare with these two, is Vincenzo. -> this does not mean it's a bad drama or anything, it is just not my thing.
Overall, it was a very decent drama. The actors all gave it their all, but sometimes the writing just didn't really hit what they were trying to. Some of the drama came off feeling almost two-dimensional, if that makes sense? It just never really got deep enough for me to actually truly care what happened to any of the characters, which doesn't really make for an amazing viewing experience.
And I can't talk about this drama, without talking about the shipping wars, because oh boy did it get heated at some points. The viewers who found Hee-sik boring (which... I can kind of see, but he's just as "stereotypical" of his character as any of the other characters in this drama, so by that logic all the characters are boring) started shipping Nam-soon with Shi-oh. And yes, these two did have pretty good chemistry on screen, but guys with giant red banners waving behind them just really aren't my thing. And while I did think that Nam-soon and Hee-sik were cute, their chemistry wasn't off the charts like you would want in a romance (neither was her chemistry with Shi-oh, just saying).
The single best scene in this drama was the cameo from Bong-soon and Min-hyuk. And that says a lot about this drama, I think.
In the end... this was a drama that did what it wanted - it copied and somewhat successfully made a second drama to the "classic" that was Bong-soon. It was generally cute and kinda fun, and I didn't have the worst time watching it. Did this drama need to be made? Not if you ask me. Does it need a second season / spin-off like they're teasing? Definitely not. Will I still give it a watch? Probably.

"The witch is alive"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Couples who do not have any affection for each other start a quirky marriage discourse.
TV CHOSUN's new mini-series 'The Witch Is Alive' (directed by Kim Yun-cheol, written by Park Par-ran) is a mystery black comedy that deals with the story of three women who each have someone they want to kill at an age of indecisiveness where they live half and half.
According to the production team, Gong-mari (Lee Yu-ri) and Lee Nak-goo (Jang Sang-hoon), who once loved each other passionately, Chae Hee-soo (Lee Min-young), Nam Moo-yeong (Kim Young-jae), and Yang Jin-ah (Yoon So-i) and Kim Woo-bin (Ryu Yeon-seok) are three couples. Currently, they lead a bleak married life with only a sense of duty towards their partner. In the midst of this, three husbands, who want to end their marriage for their own reasons, demand a divorce from their wives, and a huge storm begins to strike in the precarious relationship.
The three wives Gong-Mari, Chae Hee-Soo, and Yang Jin-Ah, who believe that a divorce is inevitable even though they can't help but think that divorce is not allowed, stand up to their husbands proudly. Currently, the Republic of Korea is proceeding with a judicial divorce based on the principle of 'guilty', in which only the other party of the guilty spouse can file a lawsuit. Accordingly, the three wives contemplate other ways to put an end to their marriage against the ‘other’s side’, which has no limits if it’s only about what they did wrong.
Fearless husbands who boldly offered divorce papers to such wives claim 'bankruptcy' that the rest of their marriage has already come to an end. Judging that it would be pointless to stay married. From Nak-goo Lee, who committed an affair, to Moo-yeong Nam, the last king of her indifferent husband, and Woo-bin Kim, who seems to be more helpful than living, to die.
While the relationship between the three couples who are inferior to others continues here and there, her husband Kim Woo-bin suddenly dies, and Yang Jin-ah breaks out of the bondage of her marriage and makes a splendid comeback as a single, wealthy, single daughter who is called 'God's Servant'. While watching Jin-ah Yang enjoying her exciting single life, her two friends, Marie Gong and Hee-soo Chae, suddenly come up with a dangerous idea that could end the marriage in her mind.
I wonder if Gong Mari and Chae Hee-soo will be able to properly avenge their husbands for forcing them to put an end to their marriage through the use of ‘disruptionism’. In addition, attention is focused on whether Yang Jin-ah, who has found a ray of light in her dark marriage life, can continue this happiness.

Title: Bulletproof | Chapter 3
Summary: The secretary and right-hand woman for the CEO of JinHit Entertainment suddenly breaks down and everything is falling apart. Can you, a mere intern, be able to piece things back together for Seokjin as his new right-hand woman, at work, and at home?
Pairings: Kim Seokjin x female reader
A/N: Part 3! just some family fluff and getting to know the boys
Part: 1 | 2 | 3 |
“Kookie slow down! You’re going to burn your tongue!” You gently scold the eager and hungry boy as he tries to take his first spoonful of soup. “Noona, I’m a big boy, I know how to feed myself!” He retorts back, right before promptly burning his tongue on the metal spoon. You quickly get him a glass of water to try to cool down the burn. Before you could say anything, Yoongi quickly rushes over to the maknae’s side. “Kook, you okay?” His worried expression doesn’t fully subside when Jungkook nods his head.
“Okay, dig in guys! It’s hot so be careful” You make sure all the boys are seated with a heaping bowl of noodles with soup on the side. You wring your hands nervously, anticipating their first reactions to your cooking. Please let them like it, please let them like it.
Woah Noona! this is so deleschious!” You see Taehyung stuffing his face full of noodles, getting sauce all over his mouth and cheeks. The table goes quiet and the only sound is satisfying hums and utensils occasionally clinking with the bowls. You chuckle in relief and grab a tissue to help wipe Taehyung’s messy face. “Well, I’m so glad you guys like it. I’ll be happy to make it for you whenever you want.” Taehyung barely swallows his mouthful before exclaiming, “Really?! Like tomorrow and the next day and the day after that?”
“Tae, she’s Dad’s secretary, not our cook” Namjoon manages to say in between bites of his dinner. “But her cooking is so good! Thank you for the food! I’m so full I could just take a nap right here” Taehyung gently places his chopsticks down and rubs his stomach lazily. He’s smiling goofy boxy grin at the others as they one by one finish their dinner.
“Last one to put their stuff in the sink washes!” Hoseok yells from the end of the table and quickly gets up before the others. “Hey, no fair!” Jimin is quick to follow as he frowns. You’ve never seen Jungkook move so fast and confidently in the short time that you’ve met him, as he beats Hobi to the sink. “Yes! Not it!” he sticks his tongue out playfully as the others make their way to the sink. Yoongi is the last to get to the sink, but it didn’t seem like he was in a hurry, to begin with. “Hyung, do you want me to help you dry?” Namjoon offers but he’s met with a stern glare instead from the mint-haired boy. “Not after the first time you tried to help with the dishes.” Namjoon scratches the back of his head before shrugging and heads to the living room. What happened during the first time? Your question is quickly answered when Namjoon reaches for his glasses to do some reading and manages to break the arm off the glasses. You hear Yoongi sigh over the sound of running water. “God of destruction strikes again” he mumbles under his breath.
Jimin rushes to one of their bedrooms and emerges with a glasses case in one of his hands. He hands it over to Namjoon. “Here’s your spare, Hyung.” Namjoon gingerly takes the case from Jimin, carefully trying not to break his spare glasses. “Thank Jiminie. I guess I’ll have to tell dad to get these ones fixed” He gestures to the broken ones that he’s placed on the table. I can probably imagine what happened the first time he did dishes now.
You walk over to the sink and quietly stand beside Yoongi. “You can help me dry, if you have nothing better to do than stand there and stare at me.” He says quietly, eyes still fixed on the dishes that was in his hands. Not sure what to say, you grab a dish towel and begin drying the dishes that Yoongi hands you. With two hands doing the piles of dishes, the task is finished faster than you thought, though in complete silence between you two. Yoongi finishes the last glass and turns off the running water. He wipes his hands silently on the dishtowel next to him, and he begins to walk away. Should I have said something? You begin to worry that perhaps Yoongi doesn’t really enjoy your company, but your worries are put to rest when he turns he pauses, turns his head around, and says, “Thanks. I’ll be in my room.” You would have missed his small smirk if you hadn’t been staring at the back of his head the entire time. You smile happily and reply with a cheerful “Okay!”
You walk over to the living room to join the others that have gathered there. Namjoon is reading a book, Hoseok and Jimin are watching a dance practice of a group on television, and Taehyung and Jungkook are sitting on the side with a deck of cards. You take in the scene in front of you, where these young children seem a little too comfortable at being independent. You gently sit down next to Namjoon, who looks a little startled from the shifted weight on the couch. He sees that it’s just you, and goes back to reading. You peek at the book he’s reading, and it turns out to be an English book about an artist. Wow, this guy must be so smart! You’re thinking if you should comment on the book to Namjoon when you hear Jimin excitedly exclaiming “Hobi! Did you see that! Wow that was so cool! Rewind it! I wanna see that move again!”
“Yeah yeah give me a sec Chim!” Both Hobi and Jimin subconsciously move closer to the TV to watch the said move again. “Guys, you’re eyes are-” You’re cut off with Hoseok suddenly jumping up and trying to copy the move. Seeing his older brother start practicing, Jimin is quick to get on his feet as well and try to mimic the move. Hoseok masters it in no time, literally, and starts commenting on ways to incorporate the move into future dances or how to improve it. “Jiminie do this. Like.. likes. Bam-bam Bam bam..BAM! yeah! You got it!” Jimin is beaming at his Hyung’s compliments and they begin freestyling to the music. Wow, they dance better than an adult does! You’re starstruck with your mouth slightly agape when Jungkook taps your shoulder. You jump a little bit at the sudden appearance of the maknae. “Omo! You startled me!” You exclaim, handing your hand to your chest. Jungkook immediately starts blushing and stutters. “S-sorry Y/N-noona...I-I just wanted to know if you want to join me and Taetae in playing goldfish..” His voice begins to trail off as his confidence begins to waver. “Of course I would!” You take his hand and his worried expression lights up with his bunny smile. He leads you over to where Taehyung is waiting with little hops in between his steps.
You make yourself comfortable and Taehyung asks, “Noona, do you know how to play? I learned this game in school today! Jungkook says he’s never played it before.” Taehyung keeps changing his positions, at first sitting on his knees, then splaying flat on his tummy, unable to keep still from excitement. “So this is the rules...” He begins to explain in a slightly roundabout way, as a child would, about the game, and you nod with a serious expression to show that you were indeed, listening. You glance over at Kook and can’t help but internally smile at his wide-eyed look. “So that’s the rules, are you ready to play?” Taehyung distributes the cards between you three and you pick up your deck. “Hey, no peaking Kookie!” You say as the boy tries to sneakily look over at your hands. Giggles ensue as you try your best to comically hide your cards from their curious eyes. Taehyung wins the first round with Jungkook pouting so hard that you wonder if his mouth hurts. You win the second round and Jungkook looks like he’s about to implode while Taehyung is pretend-wailing at the loss. These boys sure are competitive. However, the third and fourth round is won by Jungkook, who seemed to have picked up on the flow of the game, and can’t help but gloat. “HA! I beat you and Y/N-noona again! One more round!” Taehyung throws his cards on the ground and folds his hands across his chest. “This is no fun when I keep losing.” Kookie piles up the cards and begins to clumsily shuffle them in his little plump hands. He’s about to distribute the cards again when the doorbell chimes ring and you hear the door open. “Dad’s back!” Jungkook is the first to leap to his feet and run to where there their father is now standing. You turn around from your spot on the floor, and see the swarm of 7 children surrounding your still-handsome boss.
Seokjin drops his bag on the floor and opens his arms wide to embrace as many of the children as he can fit in them. Although he seems tired from the long day, you can still see the love that he as for each of them. You get up and stand a small distance away from the chaos. “Welcome back, Seokjin-nim. I have some dinner left, if you’re hungry.” You smile as his tired face lights up at the mention of food. “Let me get settled in first, but that sounds amazing.” The boys start pulling at him again, all fighting to tell him about their time with you. “Dad! She’s a super awesome cook!” “Dad! Namjoonie-hyung broke his glasses again!” “I learned a new move Dad! Wanna see? Jimin was practicing with me!” “I beat Tae in a card game called Goldfish!” “Okay okay guys! Calm down! 1,2,3,4,5.... where’s Yoongi?” You see Seokjin counting his children, trying to keep them in check. “Yoongi-hyung said he was gonna be in his room, he’s probably sleeping.” Namjoon takes the lead as the group quiets down. Jin nods and ruffles Namjoon’s head. “Alright guys, it’s time to get ready for bed too! You guys should really learn from Yoongi!” Starting to feel like you’ve just intruded on an intimate family moment, you excuse yourself. “I think I should go now...” Seokjin looks over at you, mouth open to say something, but thinks otherwise. He nods instead and gives you a charming smile. “Thank you, Y/N. I’ll see you tomorrow at work. Get home safe!” You bow back politely before closing the door to a broad-shouldered king and his six princes waving goodbye.

How BTS and Its ARMY Could Change the Music Industry
Tumblr media
It was just a year ago that BTS’ Love Yourself: Speak Yourself tour was selling out stadiums all over the world. Each night of the 20-date trek, which grossed $116 million, a total of nearly a million ticket buyers around the planet witnessed a thumping opening liturgy at the top of the K-pop band’s set in the form of the song “Dionysus.”
As flames shot up from the stage, seven figures emerged in supplicant white amid Greek columns and a long altar. Rapper RM (full name: Kim Nam-joon) led the way, twirling the staff of the titular mythical deity, as group mates Jin (Kim Seok-jin), SUGA (Min Yoon-gi), j-hope (Jung Ho-seok), Jimin (Park Ji-min), V (Kim Tae-hyung) and Jung Kook (Jeon Jung-kook) flanked him in a display of choreographed precision. The crowd, reaching peak pandemonium in a night full of deafening screams, made willing maenads and satyrs, transported by the band’s presence. An anthem about rebirth and self-discovery through the ecstatic collective experience of music was received as intended — as if from the gods.
Tumblr media
Idol worship is by no means a new concept in pop music — remember John Lennon’s provocative statement in 1966 that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus”? — but there’s something about BTS that turns fandom up to 11. The global brigade of BTS acolytes is collectively known by the acronym ARMY, short for Adorable Representative MC for Youth, a moniker chosen by Big Hit Entertainment, the company that launched the band. ARMY comprises the lion’s share of a Twitter audience that’s 29.2 million followers strong, more than triple that of any other K-pop group, and growing daily. BTS’ Instagram presence of 30.6 million followers (also rising rapidly), is trailed closely only by YG Entertainment’s Blackpink, at 29.3 million.
“It is because ARMY exists that we exist,” Jin says.
To understand the scope of BTS Inc.: An influential 2018 study by the Hyundai Research Institute estimated that the ripple effects from the boy band’s ecosystem contribute roughly $4.9 billion annually to South Korea’s GDP, on track to generate more value over 10 years than the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The study gauged that in 2017, one in 13 visitors to the country came for BTS-related pilgrimages. That ratio may soon be growing. Spotify has reported a 300% spike in new listeners to the group since the Aug. 21 release of “Dynamite,” BTS’ first all-English single.
The BTS boom has also driven Big Hit to launch an IPO in October projected to raise some $811 million. (Each BTS member will be awarded shares worth approximately $8 million.) Of Big Hit’s revenue in 2019, 97.4% was generated by BTS, including $130 million worth of T-shirts, cosmetics, dolls and other merchandise.
The numbers are no accident. The South Korean government began investing strategically in the arts and the digital economy to help steer the country out of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. On the heels of “Parasite” sweeping the Oscars, the worldwide success of BTS may be another sign to the West that Seoul might be the center of a new force in creative production.
Big Hit, and the K-pop music business in general, have proved just how much a band, and a company, can prosper through a direct-to-consumer relationship, driven by digital platforms and dedicated apps with lots of behind-the-scenes content that keeps fans emotionally involved. It’s engagement on a scale that no Western artist has ever achieved, despite decades of radio promotion and the best retail strategy.
For the global music industry, the band’s success has meant a serious rethink of how a record company — in BTS’ case, Sony Music’s Columbia Records, which distributes the group’s music in the U.S. (though the band is not signed to the label) — builds and maintains a fan base. You could almost look at it as a collaborative arrangement: As music is being made in real time, decision-makers and strategists at Big Hit and Columbia are taking in and processing the comments and views of ARMY and pivoting accordingly.
“It creates a self-sustaining engine that, eventually, becomes hits perpetuating more hits,” says Neil Jacobson, a former president of Geffen Records who runs Hallwood, a talent agency for producers and songwriters. “A label wants that fan connection happening all the time so that they can consistently release and promote music. But in the past, there had always been intermediaries that labels had to talk to in order to manifest exposure. Now, there is a mechanism for an artist to speak directly to their fans. That didn’t exist before, and it has turbocharged the process.”
It’s all led to this “Dynamite” moment: The single has sold nearly 700,000 adjusted song units since its release — good for a gold record certification by the RIAA. The song is quickly becoming the band’s biggest radio hit to date (without a featured artist, it’s worth noting), and represents a significant breakout beyond its core audience. After that, will Grammys follow?
“They check all the boxes,” says Jenna Andrews, the vocal producer on “Dynamite” who also serves as an executive at Sony’s Records label. “I’ve never seen anything like BTS in terms of singing and dancing. This is just an indication of what’s yet to come. They’re going to take over the world.”
Kathryn Lofton, Yale University professor of religious and American studies and author of the book “Consuming Religion,” says that the bond BTS has with its ARMY is different from the typical singer-fan connection because “BTS’ driving commitment is to their relationship to the fan group, to the manufacturing of their communal joy for you to participate in.” It’s why she views BTS as “a religious project; they are seeking to make a togetherness that you can’t stop wanting to be a part of.”
Lofton also makes a point of distinguishing ARMY from the groupies associated with Beatlemania. Sure, BTS fans know the hagiography and backstory of each member, but everything about the band’s output prioritizes the collective over the individual.
The band itself has certainly leaned into the comparison with the Fab Four. For instance, it re-created the iconic moment of the Beatles’ 1964 debut at the Ed Sullivan Theater last May on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” — in a black-and-white segment that showed the K-pop band performing as mop tops in tailored suits.
Tumblr media
But while John, Paul, George and Ringo had spotlight moments of their own, both within and outside the band — songs they wrote individually, causes they took up personally — with BTS, it’s all for one all the time. Unlike many other groups, the members share single, collective Twitter and Instagram accounts, and release even solo material through their shared channel. Accomplishments are never spoken of as belonging to any one group member but rather as the work of the team (and, of course, ARMY). In their videos, they often begin in solo shots but end up together.
This all strays from the typical tropes of Western boy bands including New Edition and ’N Sync, which have all proffered “star” frontmen. The thinking for decades had been that a record company would be lucky to have one breakout solo career among the bunch.
But BTS’ selfless approach didn’t happen randomly: The group was envisioned as a collective to heal the alienation that ails us in the digital age. Its name — “BTS” stands for Beyond the Scene — is an invitation to fans to join them offstage via almost daily video content featuring moments in their intimate if immaculately curated private lives on YouTube, Twitter and Big Hit app Weverse.
In 2011, Big Hit’s revenues from its then-main acts, Lim Jeong-hee and boy band 2AM, were plummeting. As the shadow of bankruptcy loomed, Bang Si-hyuk, now chairman, and Lenzo Yoon, global CEO, felt the company needed a total revamp. They stopped all normal work for months and called on employees to perform market research instead, seeking a new vision and formula.
Bang describes the conclusion they reached in a recent Harvard Business School case study of the firm written by Anita Elberse and Lizzy Woodham: “You would think that with the development of digital technology, people can come together more easily, but we found that it is actually more likely that people will feel more isolated. And so we need to find a way to help them, inspire them and heal them.”
Reflecting on the choice to develop a group that satiated this need, Yoon says in the study: “I think back then in 2011, with the conclusions we drew, we found the wild ginseng, as we say in Korea.”
On “Dynamite,” Big Hit worked with Columbia to further cultivate that ginseng. Pitched by Jacobson to label chairman Ron Perry, who guided and essentially A&R’d the song, worked to radio by Columbia executive VP and head of promotion Peter Gray (who has broken hits for Dua Lipa, Kelly Clarkson and Kings of Leon), and all overseen and informed by the years of management savvy of Big Hit, it’s the kind of artist development that was a music business calling card and that has lost its place in the fast-paced world of digital releases.
Radio exposure is not considered as impactful in Korea as it is in the U.S., notes RM, and so BTS — “maybe naively” — didn’t hit the ground in the U.S. thinking, ‘What can boost our airplay?’” the last time around. Still, RM notes that the band has “100% trust” in Columbia, Big Hit and the greater BTS community. “ARMY and the label are all trying their best,” he says, recounting how in the band’s early days, fans would send bouquets to radio DJs to get their songs on the air.
“Our goal is to try to show ourselves, expose ourselves to ARMY as much as possible,” adds Jin. “There are a lot of platforms now.”
In some ways, BTS’ ARMY has grown into its own force and brought the group along for the ride. In the world of K-pop, the expectation is that entertainers stay far away from politics, but as the genre has grown more global, it has begun to reach a transnational cohort to whom matters of social justice are top of mind.
When Variety broke the news on June 6 that BTS and Big Hit had donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter, BTS fans quickly flocked to #MatchAMillion through a link sent out by the fan charity Twitter account @OneInAnARMY. They hit the financial target in just 25 hours.
Tumblr media
Erika Overton, a 40-year-old Georgia resident and one of the co-founders of the account, says of the experience: “It was one of the craziest nights I’ve ever seen. I was on Twitter all night. We were refreshing the page every couple of minutes, going, ‘Oh, my God …’” Witnessing ARMY’s U.S. battalion bring the message of Black Lives Matter to fans in other parts of the world who were unfamiliar with the movement was a “big educational moment that was really, really beautiful to see,” says Overton, who is African American.
What Overton saw was facilitated by networks of fan translators who also turn Big Hit’s Korean content into dozens of languages. Other ARMY groups provide counseling or tutoring services, invent themed recipes or write informational threads on everything from the history of the music industry and how charts work to Jungian philosophy, which deeply informs the BTS albums.
Some fan accounts have even become registered nonprofits, with dozens of administrators spread around the world putting in nearly full-time work on top of their day jobs.
In addition to Black Lives Matter, BTS this year donated $1 million to Crew Nation, a Live Nation campaign to support live entertainment personnel impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. And it has continued its campaign with UNICEF to end child violence. But the band members are reticent to take on the role of global activists. “I don’t consider ourselves as political,” says Suga. “We aren’t trying to send out some grandiose message. We would never see ARMY as a conduit for our voice or our opinion. ARMY speaks their own initiatives, and we always respect their opinions, as we respect any other person’s.”
RM, on the other hand, keeps the door open for a kind of apolitical politics based more on actions than words: “We are not political figures, but as they say, everything is political eventually. Even a pebble can be political.”
The scale of its influence is not something that the group takes lightly. “Our [‘Dynamite’] video has seen 80 million, almost 90 million views in just a day. In a way, that’s very weighty — and almost frightening,” RM told Variety the day after its debut, explaining that the balancing act is often one of how to juggle the burdens of being both role models and artists.
Some Korean scholars feel that BTS’ statement in support of BLM shows how ARMY is actually out ahead of Big Hit, spontaneously enacting its own initiatives to which the company must then respond. “Big Hit thinks they can create a company-dominated [approach to] fandom, but fans are agents doing only what they want, not what they dont want,” says ethnomusicologist Kim Jungwon of Yonsei University in Seoul. For Kim, the fluidity of ARMY’s unplanned, collective responses “is the possible answer to BTS’ success.”
Candace Epps-Robertson, an ARMY member and assistant professor of rhetoric at the University of North Carolina, says the affirmational content of the group’s lyrics and videos may sound simple, but lay the groundwork for millions of fans to learn to engage critically with each other and develop a transcultural sense of global citizenship. “The message of ‘you, yourself, are enough, and you should love who you are and start with that — I think people miss how radical that can actually be,” she says. “We can’t overlook the power of that as an invitation to people to be part of this community.”
The Grammys, where BTS is eligible for record of the year, among other categories (nomination ballots for the 2021 awards, slated to air Jan. 31, went out on Sept. 28), provide a chance for the group to gain industry recognition as a mainstream contender, not just a K-pop act.
Asked why the Grammys matter so much to them, SUGA seems to bristle a bit at the question. “I grew up watching American award shows, so obviously we all know and I know the importance of the Grammys,” he says. “It’s a dream anyone working in music has.”
RM says having the goal of a Grammy, an industry-voted award, “motivates us to work harder. As SUGA said, if you are in music, the Grammy Awards are something that you cannot help but to look toward and set as an eventual goal.”
BTS’ global influence will soon collide with national duty, and a Grammy Award or three could help maintain its momentum. The band members all have to participate in Korea’s mandatory military service by the age of 28 — and four of them are within two years of that threshold. “Big Hit really wants to target the Grammys before [the members] go into the army,” says an industry source privy to the company’s marketing plans, adding that, from Big Hit’s perspective, it would be best for business if the boys all perform their service at the same time.
The group renewed its contract with Big Hit in 2018, which commits the members to another seven years with the firm, but the army service issue could knock off two years within that time span. A company statement ahead of Big Hit’s IPO shows that Jin, the oldest group member (he’ll be 28 in December), must conscript by 2022 even if he gets an extension of the draft deadline. The statement discloses that plans to prerecord content to be released over the course of any army tenure are being discussed.
South Korea officially changed its rules in July to allow draftees access to once-banned cellphones on weeknights and weekends, meaning BTS could theoretically continue some interaction with fans. However, the taking of photos, video or audio recordings remains prohibited. (Historically, most Korean celebs have fallen silent during their service.)
Soldiering aside, with the push from Big Hit’s IPO, multiple TV appearances — including an ongoing weeklong takeover of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” — the chart success of “Dynamite” and growing Grammy buzz, BTS is poised to make some serious noise this fall, which is saying a lot for a group known to shake the decibel scale with a wave or a wink. But perhaps the most significant measure of its ascent is underscored by the frequent speculation of the band’s place in a new moment for the music industry.
“What would it mean not just to include the sound of Korea in the annals of world music, but to actually propose that the South Korean sound is the next chapter?” posits Yale’s Lofton. “What if BTS are actually the next Beatles?”
