Eight Mummies and Pre-Inca Artifacts Discovered in Peru
Peruvian gas workers made an astonishing discovery beneath the ancient streets of Lima this week — uncovering eight mummies and a number of Pre-Inca artifacts.
“We are recovering those leaves of the lost history of Lima that is just hidden under the tracks and streets,” said Jesus Bahamonde, an archaeologist with Calidda, the company that distributes natural gas to the 10 million residents of Peru’s capital city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since the company began expanding its gas line system nearly two decades ago, they’ve racked up more than 1,900 archeological finds — including mummies, pottery, and textiles, Bahamonde said.
In the most recent discovery, the eight mummified males were found bundled up in the trench, wrapped in cotton cloth and tied with ropes braided from vines. Workers found the bodies about a foot below the ground.
Archeologists with the gas company believe the men belonged to a pre-Inca culture called Ichma, which formed around A.D. 1100 and flourished in the valleys around Lima until it was absorbed into the Inca Empire in the late 15th century.
Roberto Quispe, an archeologist who worked in the trench, sad the mummified bodies are likely two adults and six minors.
Lima, now an urban economic hub, has been occupied by humans for more than 10,000 years, from the Pre-Incan cultures to the Spanish conquistadors who claimed the land in the 16th century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many archeological finds have proven to be from more recent times.
In 2018, Quispe and other archaeologists working in the La Flor neighborhood found wooden coffins holding three Chinese immigrants buried in the 19th century.
The bodies were found alongside opium pipes, hand-rolled cigarettes, shoes, Chinese playing cards, a Peruvian silver coin minted in 1898 and a certificate of completion of employment contract, written and Spanish and dated 1875.
The eight mummies were found amidst braised chicken restaurants and a road that leads to Peru’s only nuclear power station.

“When the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century they found an entire population living in the three valleys that today occupy Lima … what we have is a kind of historical continuation,” Bahamonde said.
Most of the archaeological sites uncovered by Calidda have been burial sites discovered on flat ground, Bahamonde said.
Aso scattered throughout the urbanized city are more than 400 larger archeological sites, known in the indigenous Quechua language as “huacas,” which are sacred adobe constructions typically found on hilltops.

Round 2, Match 55: Mendoza vs. Soundwave
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Submitted kids:
Mendoza: Esteban, Zia and Tao
Soundwave: Rumble, Frenzy, Laserbeak, Ravage, Ratbat, Garboil, Enemy, Wingthing, Beastbox, Squalktalk, Glit, Howlback, Slugfest, Overkill, Sundor, and Autoscout but there's bound to be more I'm forgetting.
Propaganda under the cut!
Mendoza:
1. “Mendoza did not exactly *begin* as father material, what with him being a character with a very grey morality at first and both a help to the children and someone they couldn't trust fully, but his entire arc in the first season is him becoming a better person. None of the kids are biologically his but he just went and unofficially adopted all three of them. Their story is inextricably bound up with the show's story.
He first met Esteban when Esteban was a baby and was handed to him in the middle of a storm at sea (then Esteban's father seemingly died in said storm), but because Mendoza was young and interested in gold he let a local (?) church raise the child. He then met Esteban again twelve years later, on the same day he would be kidnapping Zia (for money, because Zia knows how to read quipus that the Spanish hope will tell the way to the Inca's gold) (the show takes place in the early 16th century). So he begins by kidnapping a child and manipulating another to hide in a ship and cross an ocean. They all meet Tao later, and this one is wary of him too at first, but he ends up winning their trust while bettering himself.
He's the only parental figure these kids have: Esteban's father was lost at sea after his mother was killed, Zia spends most of the first season looking for her father only for him to get killed an episode or two after their reunion, and Tao lost both his parents years ago. In the beginning of the show he's completely using them to find a legendary city of gold, and even admits it, but as the story goes he's caring more and more for them and puts himself in mortal danger just to help them, when just running away would have been much more beneficial to him. In later seasons this pattern keeps up and he's not even a grey character anymore, he's just their dad who's scheming and plotting sometimes. With the cities of gold having been revealed to be monetarily worthless he wouldn't have any reason to still accompany them, but he loves them so he stays with them. He's much more of a dad than Esteban's birth father (who miraculously reappears but keeps getting pushed out of the way by the plot), he's teaching them stuff and protecting them and cheering them on and worrying about them and helping them every step of the way. He makes dad jokes. When random people ask if Zia is his daughter he says yes, and he would say the same for Tao (and for Esteban too but he's hung up about Esteban's "real" father being alive and a nice guy).”
2. “He took Esteban on his journey because he needed his medallion, Zia because his commander requested it, and Tao because he was useful. But then he fought so much at their side that he pretty much betrayed the Spanish army and everything else to protect those kids. They didn't like him much at first, but eventually grew to love him in return, especially in later seasons.”
3. “Sly Spaniard looking for some gold in the New World accidentally adopts the three children he more or less uses to find the Mysterious Cities of Gold, but he also cares about them and accidentally starts caring about them so much that by the end of the first season he realises how much he would miss them if they weren't there.”
Soundwave:
1. “This is a dude who stores smaller dudes in his boob and he usually launches them out at high speeds to commit crimes. Fandom loves to headcanon them as a dad and his horde of kids and pets.”
2. “Forgot buzzsaw (yellow bird) lol
Bro really do be adopting”
3. “#he literally is a single mother of like 18 and they all live inside of his chest #and the only time he gets close to showing emotion is when something happens to one of them”

Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
Historical place in Peru
Machu Picchu is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Built in the 15th century and later abandoned, it’s renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar, intriguing buildings that play on astronomical alignments and panoramic views. Its exact former use remains a mystery
Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Incacitadel located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a 2,430-meter (7,970 ft) mountain ridge. Often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas", it is the most familiar icon of the Inca Empire.

Spain if the Reconquista continued into North Africa.
by u/Aofen
The Reconquista, the centuries long conquest of the Moorish kingdoms of Iberia ended in 1492 with the fall of the Emirate of Granada to Spain. The Spanish and Portuguese did try to extend there rule into North Africa, seizing several cities in North Africa. The Spanish briefly controlled cities like Algiers and Tunis, and held control of Oran for almost 200 years, but ultimately lost all but the cities of Ceuta and Melilla and a few small islands. The discovery of the Americas ultimately diverted Spanish interest to building an overseas empire instead of expanding into Africa.
In this imaginary timeline, Spanish imperialism in the Americas is hampered when the conquistadors of the Aztec and Inca Empires set themselves up as independent kings with the help of Spain's colonial rivals (This was apparently, very briefly, an actual fear of the Spanish). Spanish interest in conquest is instead diverted to North Africa, which by the 21st century is an integral part of Spain, containing about 40% of its population and the majority of its land area.

Absolutely cracking. A sort of take on Sinbad but with more historical accuracy (apart from the demons, marids, etc), with a middle-aged retired lady pirate getting the crew back together to take on a Frankish coloniser/sorceror/baddie. It's just fabulous exuberant fun." I cannot wait for more!

emeralds
Since we already talked about May’s flower, lets cover its gemstone too.  For May and its association with springs for half of the globe, not better color stone suits new green plants coming up and the hope in the air of new beginnings than the beautifully green emerald.
These days the market gets most of their emeralds from Columbia but they’ve been known around the world since ancient times.  Emeralds have been written about in Babylonian markets as far back as 4000BC and in India manuscripts in the 2nd century BC.  Hindu’s dragon Vala is said to have formed emeralds from his bile when he was killed.  The Inca believed emeralds were the tears of the moon goddess and in the Peruvian city of Manta there was a large ostrich egg sized emerald called Umina, that the people brought smaller emeralds to since they were the emerald’s ‘daughters’.  When the Spaniards conquered the city, they stole or destroyed most of the daughters but Umina was hidden away, never to be found.  Cleopatra was famously fond of emeralds, for self-decoration, interior decoration and also as gifts for her guests.  One of the stones on the Hebrew high priest Aaron’s breastplate may have been an emerald.  And let’s not forget Ireland, the most famous Emerald of all.
Easy to guess than that there are a lot of superstitions and stories about emeralds.
Medicinally, emeralds are supposed to thwart poison and help cure epilepsy and dysentery.  Wearing one is supposed make childbirth easier.  Gem cutters would keep an emerald nearby to look at to help their eyes rest after long hours of eyestrain from their jobs.
Placing one under your tongue is supposed to mean you will speak the truth - unless you’re summoning evil spirits because apparently you can do that with it under your tongue too.  Emeralds are good gifts to give to couples because they represent happiness and fidelity but beware - if the emerald is given between lovers it is supposed to indicate how faithful their love is, growing paler as that love wanes or waxing darker and richer in color if the love grows.  In fact, emeralds are a good gift to give to anyone, bringing happiness, success and luck with them.  But never give an emerald on a Monday.  It will steal all the luck out of the gift.
The Sacro Catino was once said to be the Holy Grail itself, a beautiful bowl cut from a single emerald, taken by Genoa soldiers during the First Crusade after they found it in an ancient temple.  Legends that hang around too long often find the truths hiding under them however and the cup is actually made of Byzantine crystal, an Islamic artifact from the 9-10th century.  It is still on display today, albeit in its restored form as it was broken sometime after Napoleon stole it and before it was returned to Genoa.

Day 23: ALERT! ALERT! ⚠️📣 ⚠️ A TSUNAMI OF NEW INFORMATION INCOMING!
This is not a drill! And btw, no... this is not a leak to one of the books of the third movie nor major spoilers from the film. This is information I found exclusively on the internet. The first one is from a portuguese page talking about the characters in a way nobody has done before, with more information we could have ever imagine. The second one is an spanish interview about many things.
This is the link to the first one:
This is about the voices in portugues and it explains about the characters:
João Paulo Rodrigues once again lends his voice to Tadeo Jones, better known as Tad the Explorer.
Tad's biggest dream is to be accepted by his archeology colleagues, but he always manages to complicate things. However, Tad had several surprising discoveries: the Lost City of Paititi and The Necklace of King Midas, which have remained secret because revealing the truth can cause unknown dangers. Therefore, Tad's abilities remain unknown. He dreams of being accepted by the archaeological community, which leads him to his next adventure to discover where the Emerald Tablet is hidden.
Mafalda Luís de Castro is the voice of Ramona, the Egyptian mummy hidden in the Louvre Museum who turns out to be Ra-Amon-Ah, a lost queen of the 18th dynasty, advisor to Queen Nefertiti and Tutankhamun's aunt. Her period in her power only lasted 3 days and as a result no one recognized her reign. Therefore, her greatest desire is to be rediscovered and exposed in a museum to receive all the historical attention she deserves.
Rui Oliveira is the voice of the Mummy, who after 500 years as a guardian of the Lost City of Paititi, was expelled when Tad made the archaeological discovery. Now the hilarious Inca mummy has become Tad's sidekick. The Mummy unleashes an ancient spell on himself, and Tad will have to find the Emerald Tablet to stop the Mummy's curse.
Ana Vieira lends her voice to Victoria, the Queen of paranormal television shows. Victoria Moon was Sara's close friend, but paths parted when her obsession with ghosts and spirits was exaggerated. Loucatoria, as she is known by the scientific community, now has a new goal: to find the Emerald Tablet of Hermes… and Sara and Tad are the only ones who can help her.
Márcia Correia gives the voice to determined and courageous Sara, a world-famous archaeologist. She specializes in pre-Columbian cultures and now leads an international archaeological team in Mexico to find the location of King Pakal's Tomb. Sara invited Tad on her expedition, unaware of his clumsy ways and the trouble he's about to unleash. She will have to team up with Tad to fight the evil forces of the underworld.
Carlos Macedo lends the voice to Ryu , José Nobre to Brian and Daniela Viçoso to Ann, the most brilliant archaeologists in the world. But Tad's antics do not help these young, intelligent and well-prepared archaeologists to accept him on their team.
Luís Mascarenhas and Helena Mota lend their voices to Pickles and Ramirez, respectively.
Special Agent Sam Pickle is an old-fashioned police officer obsessed with missions. Agent Ramirez is an investigator who never thought having Pickle as a partner would be her hardest task. They are willing to travel to the end of the world to find out what is behind Tad's actions. Ramirez will add common sense and effectiveness to Pickle's quest whenever necessary.
Emilia Ermelinda Duarte lends her voice to Mrs. Wolfstrom (the old lady who thinks Tad is a criminal for the shenanigans happening in his apartment)
Tad also has the company of Jeff, his faithful canine companion. He's a free-spirited, loving dog, but Jeff isn't the most obedient.
And with Belzoni, Sara's mute and moody parrot. Although he can't speak, he finds many ways to express himself.
-----------------------------------------------
This is the link to the second article:
It is very informative and long, thus I only put here the bits that were the most interesting to me, but I recommend to read the whole article, it's worth it:
CURIOSITIES OF THE THIRD ADVENTURE OF TADEO JONES...
To develop a third part of Tadeo Jones, they (the crew) searched for almost two years for an interesting concept to add to the franchise. Several stories that weren't interesting enough were discarded until they came up with a great concept: what would happen if our Inca Mummy was affected by an Egyptian curse? That concept triggered the minds of all of us who were involved in the project and marked the definitive start of Tadeo Jones 3.
If the Egyptian curse drives the entire adventure, the concept that internally articulates the entire film is Tadeo's desperation to be recognized (finally) as an archaeologist. And the fact that the more he tries to get that recognition, the further he ends up from being accepted.
The approach from the beginning was to achieve a feature film that would penetrate deeper into the adult audience without neglecting the children's audience for a moment. This has resulted in the richest and most ambitious film of the entire saga.
The initial moment in which an Egyptian sarcophagus is located in a Mayan pyramid is inspired by all the existing theories that the Egyptian and pre-Columbian cultures were somehow connected in ancient times. Despite being separated by 9,000 km, both worshiped the sun, built pyramids, had hieroglyphic writing, mummified their dead...
Tadeo Jones 3 is the first film in the saga in which there is no traditional villain and The Great Antagonist ends up being the Emerald Tablet, an object desired by all, but whose power no one manages to dominate.
The Ammit, the monster that Mummy becomes, is a being from Egyptian mythology that appears in ancient hieroglyphics. He was a mix of crocodile (head), lion (torso), and hippopotamus (legs).
In the car that Tadeo drives in the final credits you can see the license plate number 281009. It corresponds to 10/28/2009, the date of birth of Enrique Gato's son.
NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR...
In each film I want to be sure that there are new ingredients with which to surprise, unexpected, that keep the audience glued to the seat waiting for the next scene.
When you are facing a third party, this task becomes very complicated and it was clear to me that it was not going to be a path of roses to find a new adventure for our hero.
It took about two years of script writing to put together that new story that would guarantee that Tadeo would have a well-deserved sequel. A sequel that does not simply take advantage of the inertia of the previous ones, but rather elevated this saga several rungs higher.
Today I can say that the decision I made years ago to marry a third party has been worth it and I cannot be more proud of all the fellow travelers who have made it possible. Between all of us we have managed to take Tadeo to new heights of emotion, comedy and, of course, adventure. An adventure made for the public, to be enjoyed in its purest form: in front of a movie screen.
NOTES FROM THE SCREENWRITERS...
(I'm putting all of this part because everything is very interesting)
The saying that second parts were never good is NOT true with Tadeo. If the first installment was a critical and public success, the second part not only kept the bar, but also expanded Tadeo's universe both emotionally with the characters of Sara and Mummy, and technically in terms of animation quality and visual effects.
Therefore, the commission of a third part has been a huge challenge for the whole team and, especially, for us as writers when it comes to creating a new story that continues to improve the franchise, that maintains its spirit and that does not fall into formulas that may sound topical or predictable.
When they called us to write the script, Enrique Gato told us: “we have to go up a notch and make the best film in the saga”.
It was our first animated film and we had been dreaming of this moment all our lives: we had to measure up. We set three goals. First we needed to lay the foundations well by finding a theme that would give more depth to the story and at the same time touch the emotions of the public, both children and adults.
But we couldn't forget that we were making an adventure film: we had to make it even more exciting than in previous installments. And finally, the comedy. You can't make a Tadeo Jones movie without ensuring a good number of hilarious moments. So we decided to raise the decibels of risk and madness.
The theme we have chosen is recognition and the dangers involved in seeking fame at all costs and forgetting what is truly important: friends, family, the team that accompanies us along the way. In this installment, we start from a Tadeo who has discovered Paititi and the Midas necklace, but who has never been able to tell about it. Tadeo should be the most famous archaeologist of all time, but his discoveries are too dangerous and he must hide them. So in the eyes of the world, Tadeo is still a worker who loves to find treasures. But he is dying to be an archaeologist, to be accepted as one more by the community of adventurers.
Now, thanks to a clue about a very ancient and magical Egyptian artifact, The Emerald Tablet, he will have the opportunity to achieve his goal... although he must be careful not to let that ambition slip out of his hands and end up like the previous owners. of the table: dominated by his magical powers and what is worse, alone. In this film, Tadeo risks everything. Fortunately, he is not alone in this adventure. Beyond his desire to find the tablet and become the famous archaeologist he always dreamed of, Tadeo will learn that the most important thing is not the treasure you find, the most important treasure is the people who accompany you on the adventure.
As for comedy, with Mummy we were already on the safe side. There is no better character to get carried away towards the absurd and enjoy. But we wanted him to be accompanied by more crazy characters.
That's why we created the Egyptian mummy Ra Amon Ah, aka "Ramona", and caused the mixture of Jeff and Belzoni into a single animal with the head of a parrot and the body of a dog or vice versa depending on whether he sneezes (Jeffzoni or Beljeff). Tadeo will suffer with everyone's craziness and the public will enjoy it.
We couldn't be more proud of the result. We are like children screaming with illusion because the dream has come true.
NOTES FROM THE SOUNDTRACK COMPOSER...
The leitmotifs are fundamental in each film and are linked to certain moments and especially to the characters. The first leitmotiv were created with the Tadeo short. In each film we have been adding new ones as in this third installment; to the leitmotiv of Tadeo, Mummy and Sara, created for the first two films, we add the leitmotif of Ra Amon Ah (Ramona?), the new Egyptian mummy, and the leitmotif that accompanies the narration of the legend of Hermenegildo Trismegisto and the table emerald.
In the case of Egypt, harmonies or instruments consistent with this locality have not been sought, but the inspiration has been more Hollywood-like, narratively, the sound did not need to be too ethnic.
The first sequence of Tadeo shows us a hero in the middle of an adventure, we enter the film and find ourselves in the same situation as our hero Tadeo. In that sequence I wanted to pay a new tribute to John Williams, just like the previous installments.
NOTES FROM TELECINCO CINEMA...
This third installment of Tadeo Jones is, without a doubt, the most ambitious of the saga, and surely one of the most anticipated films on the billboard.
Produced entirely in Spain with the direction of Enrique Gato and the screenplay by Manuel Burque and Josep Gatell, the film opens in Spanish theaters on August 26 and at the same time will begin its international tour through several countries in Europe, America and Oceania. We are confident that the public will return to theaters to enjoy one of the most beloved characters in Spanish animation.
NOTES FROM IKIRU FILMS...
Of all the films I have produced, Tadeo is undoubtedly the most beloved and popular. People of all ages have grown up with Tadeo and made him a part of their environment. That is why we now had the responsibility to take another step forward and, hand in hand with its creator Enrique Gato, accept the challenge of overcoming everything we had done. With a script by Gatell and Burque, with new characters and the extraordinary talent of the team at Lightbox Animation, we are proud to see that Tadeo has not only come of age, but that he does so with the best, most ingenious and funniest of his adventures, to prove once again that there is nothing better for a whole family than a good movie session.
We are tremendously proud to be part of this wonderful feat. After thousands of hours of work by hundreds of people during the last four years, Tadeo travels from the pyramids of Mexico to arrive in Egypt for the first time. In addition, he brings back our favorite moment: that of putting on our hats, meeting with Sara, Mummy, Jeff and Belzoni, and preparing to live unrepeatable adventures. We are ready. The fun is back. Tadeo in action!
LIGHTBOX NOTES...
With Tadeo's first feature film we just wanted to make an honest film, one that we would go see. In it, the only thing that was clear to us was that we wanted there to be mummies because we had already seen in the first short that they had pull and worked, so in order not to repeat ourselves, we decided that, instead of Egyptian, they would be Inca. Given the success of Tadeo's first feature film, we had the difficult challenge of overcoming ourselves for the second part of it. How could we do it? We decided to play the game at home, more specifically in Granada and "Mortadelizar" Mummy with his costumes and there are still spectators who are still in love with our "Mummy Flores" and his anthological zapateado in Tadeo Jones 2, the Secret of the King Midas.
So the challenge before Tadeo Jones 3 was enormous, and we decided to resort to common sense: What is better than a mummy? 2 mummies, and even better if one is cursed and they are of different nationalities and social classes. Thus was born Ra Amon Ah, our Egyptian mummy, Queen of the 18th dynasty, advisor to Nefertiti and aunt of Tutankhamun, in front of… ahem, Mummy.
-----------------------------------------------
So many things, but this is what I have to say for the moment:
- Victoria is Sara's ex friend AND a victim of the Emerald Tablet. VINDICATION!
- Although that still doesn't explain Tad grabbing the emerald tablet and being fine in that screenshot.
- Btw does that mean Sara stopped being Victoria's friend because the latter started to follow the paranormal?
- Then I wonder what passed through Sara's head when meeting the living mummies from Paititi the first time?
- It's like I'm besties with someone but stop seeing her when she starts to worship the giant flying spaghetti.
- Years later I have an encounter with Lord Spaghetti and the first two things that would cross my head are "WTF!???" and "Damn, I really should said to X that I'm so sorry I called her a loony"
- Really, what happened betweent Sara and Victoria that ended on bad terms?
- But you know what this means? We got Sara lore! Yay!
- The agents and the mean trio are antagonists, but the true Big Bad is THE EMERALD TABLE. It was in the title of the movie all along! Clever Spaniards...
- I have to aplaud that, really. The two last objects were awful but at least they didn't make you its eternal slave.
- By the way, it looks like the little guy and sorcerer's name is Hermes or Hermegildo Trismegisto which I found it weird because Hermes is the name of a greek god and the latter is more like the spaniard long name. Really interesting.
- Ramirez has all the braincells of the two agents (make that statement before but I had to write it again)
- Agent Pickles' full name is Sam Pickles. I wonder if we will get to know Agent Ramirez's full name too.
- Love that they made the connection with Pre-columbian and Ancient Egyptian cultures canon. But all the things they listed that the Mayans had in common with Egypt... you know the Incas also did those things too, right?
- What is this implying? Ra-Amon-Ah & Mummy are not so different after all?
- Spain really loves mummies. They are awesome monsters and very underrated.
- Ramona was advisor of Queen Nefertiti and the aunt of Tutankhamun. She is linked to famous egyptian royalty and it shows. Girl just wants their fame too.
- Also she only was queen for 3 days. Did something happen that she no longer could rule? Does it had to do with Hermes and his cursed tablet?
- The thing about the mummies being from different nationalities is something very well-know by this point. What surprised me is that they are, indeed, from different social classes too.
- We know she was a Pharaoh/Queen, the Dynasty she belonged and some of titles and connection to famous ancient egyptian people (we could assume two of Tutankhamun's grandparents were Ra-Amon-Ah's parents)
- And what we know about Inca Mummy is that... he is a mummy... ex-guardian of Paititi... died 500 years ago. That's it.
- We so far don't have the canon confirmation that he is royalty or connected to the royal Incan Family. It was stated that he acted like was royalty and was special among his clan.
- Which again makes me question: How was this guy put in charge in the first place? Was it only because of charisma and the fact he is a fast learner?
- Will Mummy try to present himself as someone important to Incan Society in front of Ramona or is he just going to say he was from Paititi and now he is Tad's best friend and an influencer?
- Which would mean we wouldn't get nothing of Mummy's lore... again (for all I know, they could be keeping that for later, maybe a series or his spin-off)
- Which would mean that of course Queeny is going to see him as a lesser, to the point of calling him a slave, since all that she will know is that he was a guardian that lost his job and is a fool.
- Add the fact he isn't even egyptian. To Ramona, her most competent soldiers were far more superior than Mummy.
- I wonder how Mummy is going to take all this "lesser" rant from Ramona. Something tells me that this is were their rivalty is born. And Tad will suffer the consequences of their hilarous fight to see whose culture is the superior one.
- It's Peru by the way 🇵🇪
There's also this tik tok of Mummy and Tad dancing. Ra-Amon-Ah is confused.

When I went to high school (2003-2006), I studied an elective course in archaeology and for my main project I decided to write about Çatalhöyük, a stone and copper age proto-city settlement in southern Anatolia. For as long as I can remember, I've always had a specific fascination with anything up to around Iron Age (to around 1000 BCE) and Çatalhöyük had really caught my attention because it's magnificent.
So, I wrote my project and handed it in... and almost got failed. Why? The teacher had never heard of Çatalhöyük and thought I made it up! I got furious and if I hadn't called it all racist bs (I did say some things I probably shouldn't have and for that I will always feel bad). Well, I didn't use the word racist, but something like "why? because it's not 'Western'?" And that was when it actually hit me how much history isn't taught in schools. Yes, we were taught about Aboriginals, Gupta Empire, Inca etc, but what about places like Çatalhöyük, Luxmanda, Jiahu, and Kotosh? And how many places will be lost forever because those who know about them die and no one listened to them?
I don't really know what I want with this post, but I just remembered once again about that project and my teacher's reaction and it still upsets me and there's so many amazing places and human creations that goes unnoticed and untaught just because it's not in the West and it pisses me off. (It's also why I hate programs like Ancient Aliens so much, like just because white people and western civilization can't do the thing doesn't mean that some people could at one time, white western culture is not the epitome of human civilization.)
Ok, rant over.

Some of you live a lie.
Some of you believe being a human means big cities and big cars and big houses.
Some of you think education means school and grades and papers.
Some of you have never seen the stars in all their glory.
Some of you have never ran through the woods as a child, wearing a cloak your friend helped you make, leaping in and out of the trees and feeling the exhilarating rush of freedom.
Some of you have never seen a hummingbird caught in a greenhouse and then spent an hour trying to catch it. You've never held such a precious tiny creature in your hands, feeling its racing heart beat and hardly daring to move for fear of how fragile it is.
Some of you have never camped in the woods, so far from civilization that you can see the stars so clearly. It takes hours on bumpy dirt roads to get there but it's so worth it for this.
Some of you were never given the chance to learn what you wanted to learn about. Never developed a fixation on the most random things, never allowed to spend your weeks reading books and watching videos about the Inca Empire because you wanted to and not because it was required for a test.
Some of you have never heard the silence of the woods. The thousands of small chattering things. The way the trees sing. The way silence settles with an eerie chill along your spine when a predator draws near.
Some of you have never known the small town life. Where everyone knows your face if not your name. And every local knows to swerve right after the train tracks to avoid that one pothole that never gets fixed. Where the old ladies are sweet and the old men hold the door for you. Where the young people are polite and kind and cheerful and are equally happy to spend their days helping their grandparents or swimming in the lake with friends. Where your mom knows your friends mom and they share embarrassing pictures and stories of you and your friends until you and your friends get so embarrassed you run out the door and go for a walk and try to catch a squirrel. (You fail of course, squirrels are hard to catch, but a butterfly lands on you and the neighbors cat comes out to say hello)
Some of you have never bought fresh food at a farmers market where you knew half the vendors. And your best friends with the daughter of the couple selling eggs and you worked one winter for the lady with the apple pies.
Some of you have never grown your own food. Digging your hands into the dirt and breaking a sweat under the hot sun. But it's worth it for the sweetest tomatoes you've ever tasted and they grow back next year without any help from you. And the potatoes you threw into the woods have grown and spread and they taste like childhood memories and the woods you love.
Some of you have never made your own fort out of sticks and branches and checked it every year and watched with pride as the fort you built survives harsh winter after harsh winter and never shows a hint of collapsing.
Some of you have never lost someone you loved, only for half the town to show up at the memorial, because they loved her too. And you never feel so loved as when your struggling and suffering and the people around you notice and care and help. And they bring you meals and fix your car and make sure you have a shoulder to cry on. And you do the same. You comfort a stranger with a kind word and you shovel the snow off the driveway of the old lady who lives down the street and you bring a couple of young parents meals and hold their precious child while they eat.
And you are born and raised in a small town so big its spread across the wilderness. And you grow older and marry and have kids of your own. And you raise them in a place you call home and even when times are tough you always have a roof over your head and warm food in your stomach. And you watch as your kids grow and marry and have children themselves. And you hold your grandchildren and tell them stories. And your old now and you let the young people help you.
And you can live your whole life in the same small town.
And you could never go to school or college or seen a concert.
But you will have lived more of a life than thousands of people who live in big cities.
Becaue you will have lived your life in a place that is full of people who care. In a place where you can watch your gardens grow and hear the roosters crow. Where you are not part of a crowd but part of a community. Where people aren't afraid to help each other.
A place full of family and love.
Some of you live a truth.
Some of you understand that being a human means big hearts and hard work and houses full of love.
Some of you know that education is reading good books and learning from experience and helping old people rake up leaves while they teach to spell t-e-n-a-c-i-o-u-s.
Some of you have seen the stars.
