MEDITATE DAILY…
“In silence we can learn to look into the secret places of our own souls and come to know ourselves for what we are, rather than what we pretend to be.” ― Meister Eckhart Meister Eckhart, a medieval Christian mystic and philosopher, recognized the power of silence as a tool for self-discovery. He encourages us to embrace moments of stillness, using them as opportunities to explore the depths of…

My Extemporaneous Homily for Christmas Eve
[This extemporaneous homily given today on the Eve of Holy Nativity at The Chapel of St. George is transcribed from an audio recording.]
I often quote St. Eckhart of Hochheim, but I don’t usually read to you directly from his works, so I want to share with you today some excerpts from a couple of his Christmas Eve sermons:
‘Here, in time, we are celebrating the eternal birth which God the Father bore and bears unceasingly in eternity, because this same birth is now born in time, in human nature….What does it avail me that this birth is always happening, if it does not happen in me? That it should happen in me is what matters. We shall therefore speak of this birth, of how it may take place in us and be consummated in the virtuous soul, whenever God the Father speaks his eternal Word in the perfect soul….Now observe, as regards this birth, where it takes place: “Where is he who is born?” Now I say, as I have often said before, that this eternal birth occurs in the soul precisely as it does in eternity, no more and no less, for it is one birth, and this birth occurs in the essence and ground of the soul….If anyone were to ask me, “Why do we pray, why do we fast, why do we do all our works, why are we baptized, why (most important of all) did God become man?”—I would answer: In order that God may be born in the soul and the soul be born in God. For that reason all the scriptures were written, for that reason God created the world and all angelic natures: so that God may be born in the soul and the soul be born in God….St. Paul says, “In the fullness of time God sent his Son” (Gal. 4:4). St. Augustine says what this fullness of time is: “Where there is no more time, that is the ‘fullness of time’.” The day is full when there is no more day. That is a necessary truth: all time must be gone when this birth begins, for there is nothing that hinders this birth so much as time and creatures. It is an assured truth that time cannot affect God or the soul by her nature. If the soul could be touched by time, she would not be the soul, and if God could be touched by time, he would not be God. But if it were possible for the soul to be touched by time, then God could never be born in her, and she could never be born in God. For God to be born in the soul, all time must have dropped away from her, or she must have dropped away from time, with will or desire….This, then, is the fullness of time: when the Son of God is born in us.’
So we might ask, along with St. Eckhart, why this birth has taken place—this birth that is invited to continually occur in us. And I think we can answer that very, very simply; St. Athanasius did it very well in the fourth century: he said, ‘God became a human being in order that the human being might become God’—or, translated slightly differently, ‘God become human in order that the human being might be raised up a god.’
As the psalmist says: ‘You are gods.’ Not your personalities; not the egoic self that’s coming and going, that’s fleeting like a transparent image on a screen, but the Divine Ground that Eckhart talks about.
That God has such an infinite love for God’s own creation, which was never separate from God, is the great Mystery behind the Incarnation, behind the Nativity that we celebrate today. Out of that profound, ineffable, immeasurable energy of love, the Light of all Lights comes into the world.
And then we are asked to participate in that coming—not only one time, but again and again and again.
That, I think, is really the Mystery and the meaning of Nativity, in the deepest sense. And at the end of the day, when all of these moving shadows and lights pass away—all of our gestures, all of the symbols that we honor and uphold, all of the songs that we sing, all of the rituals that we enact, all of the relationships that we engage in—when all of these things pass away, the fundamental, essential meaning has to be this birth in us. And I think there is no other meaning, ultimately.
For these words and all that has been offered here this morning, Amen.

Example of Christian mysticism; Transfiguration of Christ (from WIki).
They say that the faithful Eckhart sits in front of the Venusberg or Höselberg and warns those who want to go inside. Johann Kennerer the pastor of Mansfeld was already over eighty years old when he told a story about him.  Once the vicious German army had marched in Eisleben and moved throughout the country of Mansfeld all the years on carnival Thursday. People of the land ran helter-skelter. They waited to face the army and did nothing else. Confronting was the only way to overthrow a mighty emperor.
In front of the pack, an old Man was walking with a white stick. He was the faithful Eckhart. This man called people to move out of the way, and quite a few people went home obeying him. They could be harmed if they didn’t. Some rode after this man, some walked, and some who had died a moment ago, were seen lying in the field. Some of those lying were still alive.
One rode a horse with two feet. The other was tied to a wheel and the wheel turned by itself. The third one grabbed a leg on his shoulder and had already walked long like that. Another had lost his head and his body chopped in numerous pieces. People of not only Franconia but also of Heidelberg on the Neckar saw the same event many times a year. The irate army appeared in the deserts, in the air and in the dark, with barking dogs. They blew French horns and roaring wild animals accompanied them. One could also see rabbits running and hear pigs grunting.

* Story about Meister Eckhart or Eckhart von Hochheim, a 13th-14th century German mystic and philosopher and theologian who was born in Thuringia. He was tried for heresy in his own time, the Roman Catholic Church was uncertain about his faith in the supremacy of God for seven hundred years even after his death. Whether he was faithful of not might be a burning issue for religious preachers, but people of the region where he came from, believed in his truthfulness. It was people’s belief that had created him a mystic saint who would protect believers from danger. Many years after Meister Eckhart’s death, Eisleben Mansfeld area was devastated during Peasant’s war in fifteenth century. This was long before Thirty Year’s war. Protestant-Catholic conflict led to violent civil war, overthrowing local Roman-Catholic rulers was the purpose of peasant’s groups under protestant belief. “Faithful Eckhart” was probably viewed as savior of people whose spirit tried to protect those who believed in him. He not only saves believers from being victim of the civil war but also from entering the fairyland of Venusberg, the abode of the “Pagan” Goddess Venus.

CREATURE AND CREATOR
Meister Eckhart is by far one of the most prolific writers of the Christian mystic tradition. His insights into how we are to become vessels filled with the light and love of God have comforted me in a way few others have. I’d like to share a piece from his Book of Divine Consolation with you as it is absolutely beautiful in its simplicity-
“Therefore our Lord speaks very clearly: ‘Blessed are the poor in Spirit’ (Matthew 5:3) He who has nothing is poor. ‘Poor in spirit’ means that, as the eye is poor and bare of color and yet receptive of all colors, in the same way the man who is poor in spirit is receptive of all spirit, in the spirit of all spirits is God. The fruits of the spirit are love, joy and peace. To be bare, poor, having nothing, being empty, transform nature. Emptiness makes water flow uphill and many other miracles, of which we do not intend to speak at present.
“Therefore, if you would have and find complete joy and consolation in God, then see to it that you are stripped of all creatures and and all comfort from the creatures. For indeed, as long as the creatures can and do comfort you, you will never find true consolation. When, however, nothing but God can comfort you, then indeed God, and with Him and in Him everything that is joy, will comfort you. If you are comforted by that which is not God, you will have no comfort neither here nor hereafter. But if the creatures do not corrupt you and do not give you pleasure, you will find comfort here and hereafter.”
This is a difficult passage to unpack as the wording is a bit archaic but my mans was writing and preaching back in the 1300’s so it’s par for the course.
What’s being referenced here is the relationship between creature and creator. In order to receive- Kabbalah means “to receive “ btw- one must empty ones self of earthly desire. That’s a really wordy way of saying we should spend less time looking outwards and more time going inward. Once we seek God within us and start moving in the Spirit the path is revealed as God illuminates from within.
My eastern friends would better grasp this concept by relating it to the loosening of attachments. Once the “I” sense becomes less pronounced we start to awaken to our interconnectedness. We start to see that all is one. Or as Meister Eckhart put it “the spirit of all spirits is God.” This is the path to love, joy and peace.
Thank you for reading and please feel free to pass it on to whoever you think could benefit from these words. Peace be with you all!

"A human being has so many skins inside, covering the depths of the heart. We know so many things, but we don't know ourselves! Why, thirty or forty skins or hides, as thick and hard as an ox's or bear's, cover the soul. Go into your own ground and learn to know yourself there." Watch the video in my Story!!! I think it’s true. We feel, like we’ve gone out for a walk. There are times, when we feel safe and „at home“ in our houses, our relationships, our job or our life itself. But how long do these feelings last?! More often, we have to fight, struggle or defend our achievements, not understanding, that nothing in this world lasts forever. We are heavily attached to what we claim ours. Because we define ourselves through these things. But who are you, behind this mask of posessions? Who are you, claiming to be „in a body“? Who are you really? We have gone out for a walk, alone, and suffer the consequences now. Fear, pain, grievances, and a lot more is what we got. But God is still at home, waiting for our return. He won’t judge us, on what happened during our walk, or that we have left in the first place. He loves us unconditionally, no matter what. And we have forgotten, how it feels, to experience this love. My advice for you is: you better turn around: God is at home, why walk astray!? #awakening #spiritualgrowth #newage #spirituality #selflove #god #meistereckhart #mystic #mystical #enlightenment https://www.instagram.com/p/Bpzw69cBLum/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14kait2t90kyn

A Prayer by Meister Eckhart
I pray to God to rid me of God,
If I myself were not, God would not be either.
If I were not, God would not be God.
God is within, we are without.
The eye through which I see God & the eye through which God sees me is the same eye.
He is He because He is not He. This cannot be understood by the outer man,
Only the inner man.
Find the one desire behind all desires.
God is at home, it is we who have gone out for a walk.
Through nothing I become what I am.
Only the hand that erases can write the true thing.
