Jade's worst nightmare 🌊

That's definitely the most detailed illustration I've ever drawn and it also took me a while to finish it. I procrastinated because I was going out of my comfort zone and I was so scared to mess it up... but I overcame it because the lore behind this drawing meant a lot to me.

About this illustration, I wanted to focus on Jade's sensitivity through the world surrounding him, especially on land. I wanted to break the twisted picture we all have of him and show his vulnerability. I also wanted to express a duality between his sea life and life on land. His eel form is a reminder of where he originally comes from.

To me, Jade looks like an unbreakable wall: he basically smiles all the time and he always seems to hide his true emotions. Although Jade tends to do some questionable things (let’s be real), I do believe that behind that wall, there’s an unusual but very touching sensitivity.

What I adore about Jade is the fact that he doesn't fear people's opinion about his hobbies and nothing can stop him from doing them, no matter what. He has a deep connection to everything related to nature so to me, he enjoys quiet places and being alone. Therefore I strongly believe he's an introvert and needs those moments disconnected from any social interactions.

Even though Jade appreciates solitude, he also needs to connect with people from time to time. There was a sentence he said during Vargas Camp that literally broke my heart:

"I'm envious that everyone else has someone to converse with. And here I am, all alone."

To me, that proves he's actually looking for deep connections with people so that he can be himself without being judged at all. Even Floyd and Azul find his interests weird and they're pretty harsh about his club. I know the octatrio has their own dynamics but still, Jade deserves to have a buddy who shares the same hobbies as him.

Anyway, I could write so much more about Jade but that's basically how I see him. My interpretation is probably a bit biased because of the love I already have for him but whatever. Thanks to it, I was able to imagine what could be his worst fear as he always seems so untouchable at first sight. I love shady Jade but sensitive Jade is what I need right now.

Why you should consider shipping spones

So, genuinely, spirk is the more convincing ship if you like canon. I'm completely with the spirkies on that. They're endlessly supporting, interested in each other's opinion, and just so lovely

But that's kinda dull for me. Where's the grit? Where's the tension?

I do not believe spones should be canon, no show is ever gonna give them the time and complexity they need. That's why it's so much fun in fandom! The second these guys open their mouths they insult each other, both of them.

But like, they don't really insult each other personally much. McCoy insults Vulcan philosophy and Spock insults human ethics. McCoy insults Spock's alien features and Spock insults McCoy's vocation. Tit for tat, but within that is this constant simmering respect and admiration that they never talk about. And as soon as one is attacked by an outsider they leap to the others defence. Like, that's a wild dynamic! There's so much opportunity to make that fun to read by just adding a little bit of sexual desire

Like, why are you so obsessed with Spock's ears huh? You want to lick them? Grow up about it. And Spock's always needling McCoy, always talking about logic being the be all end all even when it's almost irrelevant, just to get a rise out of him! Schoolyard bully with a crush, both of them

It's a great dynamic. So much depth to plumb. And it's pretty hard to get them to get together!

Other fandoms I've been in tend to lean towards couples who are perfectly suited for each other and the world is conspiring to keep them apart. For spones, they're what's keeping them apart. It's like mixing oil and water, without some real attention from the author they'll fall apart. It's hard! It's a challenge! It's fun!

It's so fun, there's so many opportunities for tension with them and you can take tension to make sex or humour and both are so fun!

And the way they challenge each other. You think Spock is going to settle for anyone who doesn't offer him some personal or professional growth? He learns constantly with McCoy, often showing great exasperation, but he's learning and adding to his knowledge. And McCoy, he's had his little picket fence life and needs something completely different. And he needs a good fuck, I think these two would have absolutely spectacular sex

Anyway. Give it a go because it's fun!

Many thoughts on monkey man and since I have a final to submit in 48 hours now is the perfect time to get them out. Not surprisingly another movie in which women are not real people but serve to stand in as men's motivations/succour (the only woman who approaches reality is Queenie, the oppressive boss/pimp). Dev Patel should rightly have fallen in love with one of the many women at the temple in which he recuperated, and I'm pissed that he didn't. If you're doing all the action movie tropes anyway, healing > falling in love > renewed motivation is literally THEE trope and the only reason it doesn't happen is because the creators were like, I am happy to include trans aesthetics and this weird orientalized mysticism, but trans ppl as real people who have sexual potential with the protagonist is a bridge too far!!!!

I do think it was impressive of this film (made in 2021? earlier?) to anticipate ram mandir, to anticipate it would result in more dispossession, and to show indigenous people at the forefront of that dispossession; most action movies are not interested in systemic questions and don't have the hero putting aside the guy who killed his mom to focus instead on a symbolic stand-in for hindutva; I was also impressed by the effort to show some of the relations between hindutva and industry and worker conditions; the ooh-look-how-gritty stylized slum and rickshaw chase sequences were whatever, but I really did like that we got to spend some time with the (oft vilified) Indian stray dog. For the constraints it was operating within (the action movie genre + literally no precedent of a mainstream movie set in India that deals with the dynamics of hindutva/fascism) it was a good first step. I just binged Dead Boy Detectives yesterday and I need to get my thoughts out of my head or else I'm gonna explode so here they are (yes I watched all of the show yesterday and even though it was the dead of night when I finished and I still scrolled on tumblr for over an hour afterwards)

the amount of queer media with supernatural / ghost stuff nowadays is really great I love it, and it's now what I will call the "Unbury your gays" trope (my favourites from this genre include "Cemetery Boys", "Under The Whispering Door", this frick show and Lockwood & Co. as a honourable mention because it feels queer)

on that note, Crystal and Charles do not work together romantically, even if we leave aside other ships. Their dynamic as friends? great. everything beyond that? no. It just has these "he was a boy she was a girl can I make it any more obvious" vibes that I detest and am really fed up with

I'll say it now and I'll say it again: a female lead character shouldn't have to have any super special unique fantasy powers or be a male character's love interest to justify her being a main character. It's just something that I am observing again and again in books and shows alike

Crystal has a lot of unexplored potential. And it's always difficult to have a character with memory loss because you automatically lose a big chunk of backstory and potential character motivations until later in the story. But I have hopes for season 2 (if we get one pleeeease)

Let's start with who will you be? You can be either a simple follower or a defeated miniboss on one of the levels. We will consider both options.

Simple follower!Reader:

• With 100 percent probability, the Lamb would have found you in the forest when followers of the old faith wanted to sacrifice you to one of the bishops. Or he ransomed you from Halob when you were caught in his snare. Doesn't matter.

• Your dislike for them would be more likely not to their personality, but to the fact that they also build their cult like the bishops of the old faith.

• Throughout your entire life of trying to survive, you have formed a bad impression not only of the bishops, but also of the faith in general, since you have seen all their cruelty.

• The Lamb, in turn, disliked you because of your wariness of everything they say. They were accustomed to the fact that followers were almost always ahead of him with childlike trust, or it was easy to re-educate them. You were different.

• On pain of death, you still had to join their cult, and then the game began: Where they tried to get your complete loyalty in the faith, and you tried to be as far away from them as possible, without overstepping the boundaries.

• Your overall journey has been long.

• Not to say that you were a bad follower, on the contrary, you faithfully carried out their every assignment, but again, you had almost no faith.

• Therefore, it was a great surprise to you when the lamb began to pay more attention to you.

• The Lamb understood that you were different and this began to attract them, giving them excitement. What started as a game for them grew into real interest.

• Usually, all minibosses quickly get used to the new faith.But you were different, too stubborn and, as it turned out, savvy with language.

• However, a night in the penitentiary quickly shut you up.

• Now, instead of simply insulting their and trying to kill their again, you have switched to passive aggression.

• This certainly irritated the Lamb. But as long as you dutifully carried out your instructions, they were ready to turn a blind eye to it.

• You, like other followers, are not asked to do too much, which certainly gets you out of the rut at first.

• Overall, it was like a small settlement, except for the constant sermons that you were required to attend.

• All of this together reduces your hatred.

• But what keeps getting on your nerves is the lamb with the endlessly long tongue.

• You really miss the time when they would just mockingly brush off your direct threats with a roll of their eyes. Now it has turned into endless jokes and childish behavior at some points.

• LIKE, SERIOUSLY? Are they the leader of a cult, the very chosen ones to free the one who is waiting from eternal imprisonment? WHAT THE HELL!?

• But it turns out that all of this, including the cult, including your new environment and including the Lambs themselves, is gradually helping your soul.

• Gradually, your thousand-year-old foundations of serving the old faith begin to crack, and it becomes much more difficult to hate Lamb.

• You notice that you begin to communicate more often. You definitely have common topics of conversation.

• Maybe it wasn't all that bad because eventually you actually start to open up to them.

• You still have many pitfalls in your soul, and the teachings of the old faith sometimes put pressure on old wounds, but you try not to cling to the past. You already have a beautiful present with them.

i joke. ok first of all i need to cite ten @bladesmitten as a resident durgewyll expert and direct you to his blog... she's written some incredible fic & analysis of the durgewyll romance and made a lot of gorgeous wyll edits and art in general, can't rec his blog enough.

i have sadly never played through the durgewyll romance & only watched it so there are undoubtedly story details i am unaware of. alas i have only played the tav version of his romance so far

some spoilers for durge beneath the cut. i tried to be vague but a warning there. also i didnt stick my oar into unreal unearth or any of the adjacent eps for that album .. sorry

all that being said here are my 2 cents

i think the main draw for picking hozier songs for durgewyll is that incredibly sexy dynamic they have of being each other's foil as well as each other's love interest. both wyll and durge are bound to an inescapable doom within the story: to pay with their body and soul for the fate of baldur's gate. durge must destroy it to please their father, wyll must save it. (wyll's saved it already, at the cost of his soul, and durge has to sacrifice their soul to destroy it as (redacted), but i wont go further on that tangent lol. its fascinating though.)

i think a core concept of wyll to focus on here as well is his faith. in his act 2 dance scene, in response to one of the dialogue options, wyll replies that he 'still keeps faith in the old tales of true love'- this is crucial. wyll is the man to whom the gods gave a cold shoulder. he has no love or faith for them. but he keeps faith in the old tales- he keeps faith, specifically, in durge.. 'his greatest adventure'.. and if durge chooses to resist their father's authority, they spurn a god for wyll's sake. there's an incredible amount of mutual devotion there.

there is also the monster hunter/monster dynamic. i haven't delved into it much here bc i am more interested in how eerily wyll and durge parallel each other as twin mirrors and exiles from the gate, the light and dark sides, sharing almost a common doom, trapped in the long shadows of their fathers.... man. but the monster dynamic should absolutely be examined and explored, it's fascinating. i think it's another compelling aspect of wyll's character. he's a man with a lot of resonant contradictions. a monster hunter who refuses to hunt the monster of baldur's gate and instead severs them from the one who made them .... a monster hunter who holds out his hand to the monster he is supposed to kill... wyll's love of the mysterious and strange and his kindness, i think, predispose him to see durge as an ally and a friend. not from naivete, but from an open heart

my hozier picks for durgewyll overall:

it will come back - i love the way the view shifts in this. one of my top durgewyll picks for the way it evokes a lot of the horror & tragedy that wyll looks into and doesnt flinch away from & the hunger durge has toward wyll extending his own lonely & friendly hand

shrike - i see this as primarily from durge's view. picked for the devotion & regret

NFWMB - applies beautifully to both of them. theeeee durgewyll song to me from andy's works... consider the lyrics from both person's perspective to feel the world open beneath your feet lol

as it was - ditto, i think it encompasses both perspectives. also one of my favorite songs he wrote so im biased lmao. i think this is another very resonant choice for the durgewyll dynamic

like real people do - feels an overly obvious pick but it could work especially well for a resist durge

no plan - could be an intriguing choice. i can't quite swing it but some of the lines in this for durgewyll... i like them...

you could definitely make a case for from eden for another from durge's view. gives me a feeling of a durge who's not resisting but idk

If Leon had lived longer or survived, I believe he would've been one of the main characters in the story.

Usually, promotional materials such as merchandise tend to feature Sayaka alongside the main trio of THH. This is understandable given her early portrayal as the heroine, but let me explain why it makes sense for Leon to be also included in the main group.

Danganronpa often pairs characters with others who complement their themes, forming what I call "narrative partners," whether in duos or trios. This isn't just for main characters—most have these connections, though there are exceptions.

Leon's narrative partner is Sayaka. They are designed as complementary opposites, each embodying the game's central theme of "talent" more than any other characters, a theme that wasn't touched upon after their early deaths in the story. Beyond this, Leon's crush on Sayaka, which is evident throughout the Danganronpa series, further ties their stories together. They were also the first characters created, serving as a foundation for the series.

Moreover, Leon shares characteristics with the "best friend" archetype seen in other Danganronpa games, like Kazuichi and Kaito. I'd argue these characters were inspired by Leon, suggesting that, had he survived, he would likely have been close friends with Makoto, forming a trio with Makoto and Sayaka. This is supported by class photos showing them together, hinting at a potential narrative thread that was never explored. This relationship could have deepened Makoto's character by showing and building his optimism through real friendships, rather than leaving it seemingly baseless.

Having Leon and Sayaka to the story not only would've supported Makoto's "optimistic" character trait through their friendship but also balanced out the stoicism of Kyoko and Byakuya. With Kyoko and Byakuya offering logical perspectives and Sayaka and Leon adding emotional depth and sentimentality, the group dynamics would have become more engaging and interesting, in my opinion.

I would have enjoyed seeing Sayaka and Leon embody the themes of talent, alongside Makoto and Junko symbolising hope versus despair, with Kyoko representing mystery, thus tying together Danganronpa's main themes, and Byakuya, of course, taking the role as the essential anti-hero of the story.

These are just my thoughts, but I'd love to hear yours, too.

Oh, and maybe I should note that the official character list for THH goes exactly as follows: Makoto, Sayaka, Leon, Kyoko, and Byakuya. So, here’s an official picture of them together! It calms my soul.

Tom's line about Shiv being selfish and "find[ing] it very hard to think about me" is actually so telling because while it's absolutely true that she rarely takes his position into consideration, Tom never once thinks about what he can do to help Shiv unless it also benefits him.

Every single time he makes a move or sacrifice that might help her, it's always something that he thinks will give him a leg up. He volunteers to take the fall for cruises, not for Shiv, who is in no way implicated, or even for Waystar, but because he thinks it'll ingratiate him to Logan, and the second it seems like he might have to actually follow through on that, he immediately tries to get out of it and even throws Shiv under the bus. Meanwhile, for all that Shiv disregards his interests, there are a number of things she does that only help him, and she's the one who actually sacrifices something and undermines her position with Logan to beg him not to let Tom go to jail.

It just makes it so clear that no matter how much he might love her (and I think he does, in his own compromised way), for him their relationship was always built on the underlying assumption that it's her job to prop him up, but it's not his job to help her.

I really like Tonny and Sahed together because their entire dynamic reminds me so much of gumlee/bubbline (the in show one not the fionna and cake one). Like they’re *the* ex lovers who despises the other’s guts but also still can’t help but be in love with them even if it’s disguised as hate and contempt.

so i know ive talked about kit x elora before bc of the tension and that last scene that can be read romantic (to me its honestly just a good ole crack ship or maybe the posibility for a throuple but yeh, nothing can get between tanthamore. but thats for another post), but to be honest i just really want to take a moment to recognize it as a friendship because it is just so rare to find a female friendship, more so at the center of a show, and even more so a fantasy show - fantasy being a genre were most of the characters are always male and, if you get a woman, its usually just someone's love interest.

but in this show we got two women whose friendship is so powerful they manage to complete the quest and find airk because of it. and they still have their rivarly!! but its not a petty catfight!! and its not over some boy!!! and even beyond that theyre both so complex, they have other struggles aside from their rivalry and their trauma, they even have love interests of their own!! like, honestly, this show is so amazing in so many ways (interracial wlw relationship being respected and developed and given a place in all of it without either of the women being reduced to just a love interest???) but i just think we should take a moment to apreciate the realness of these women, and the platonic relationship thats built between them, between kit and elora, and how they overcame everything, together, to become pivotal to the plot. without the trust they develop between them, without elora coming into herself and persisting in her helping kit, and kit letting go of her resentment and jealousy to believe in her, the whole crew would have never found the immemorial city and would have probably ended up dead in the shattered sea trying to find a way back
