Bordin Marsinkul hyper drawing at SacAnime 2023

I attended SacAnime'23 this weekend and got a drawing of my Chinese dragon character Yan drawn by artist Bordin Marsinkul. We first met at Lodi Comic Con in 2022 where he did this very nice drawing of my guinea pig Domino. I really liked the techniques he used with his Olo markers and white out doing flicking and smearing effects with his coloring, so with his permission I filmed him doing another drawing commission for me. The idea I gave Bordin was to have Yan holding a flaming pearl, and Bordin did an amazing job once again! I'd like to try some of these marker techniques myself sometime.

Somewhere between being chained to my easel for three weeks and causing grease fires in the kitchen (long story), I took some time to review the OLO markers from this month's Art Snacks box! They have a cartridge system rather than the Copic-style refill and can actually unscrew in the middle if you wanted to mix and match the ends.

Taiteilijaks opitaan

Mä piirrän ja maalaan käsin ja oon siin tosi hyvä, mut digitaalista taidetta teen vaan satunnaisesti ja läpällä.

Aina ku näen digitaiteilijoitten puhuvan, mitä ohjelmia ja siveltimiä ja muita tekniikoita ne käyttää siihen taiteen tekoon, mulle tulee semmonen olo, et digitaalinen taide on jotain, mitä en voi koskaan oppia, koska siin on tuhat eri työkalua, jotka pitäis käydä läpi et löytää ne omat, ja ajatus siitä kaiken monimutkaisuudesta on tyrmäävä.

Mä kaivan laatikosta mun B2-lyijykynän ja suosikkipyyhekumin, mun 0,2- ja 0,5-rajaustussit ja 100 kpl erivärisiä marker-tusseja, joiden sävyt ja erimuotosten päiden käyttäytymisen mä osaan ulkoo, ja viel kahta erilaista paperia, ja sit ryhdyn piirtämään.

En useinkaan mieti, miten monta - jopa monta kymmentä - vuotta mä oon tehny tätä ennen ku oon tullu tähän pisteeseen, missä mun ei tarvi ollenkaan aktiivisesti pohtia, minkä kynän ja paperin valitsen ja mitä teen niillä.

Ei se osaaminen oo ilmestyny mulle tyhjästä parissa päivässä. En mä oo syntyny tän taidon kanssa. Mä oon oppinu tän. Mä oon käyny läpi tuhat menetelmää ja välinettä ja tullu lopulta tähän pisteeseen.

Digitaalisen taiteen äärellä mä joudun palaamaan ikäänku alkuun. Joudun alottamaan tyhjästä eri menetelmiin ja välineisiin totuttelun ja sen oman tekniikan ja suosikkikynien ja -siveltimien etsimisen. Haluaisin olla saman tien yhtä hyvä ku oon fyysisillä materiaaleilla työskennellessä, mut miten voisin olla?

Mun pitäis ajatella, et siinä missä oon saanu otettuu haltuun perinteiset menetelmät, ni tottakai saan otettuu myös digitaaliset. Mut myös, et en voi odottaa oppivani niitä päivässä, vaan siihen menee aikaa niinku muuhunki. Jos haluun oppia, mun pitää olla valmis laittamaan siihen aikaa, paljon.

Digitaiteilijat, mä katon teitä mun maalisotkun ja pyyhekuminpurun ja luonnospaperivuoren keskellä ja nostan teille hattua. Te osaatte jotain, minkä oppimiseen mulla menis kaikesta mun osaamisesta huolimatta ihan tosi tosi paljon aikaa ja vaivaa. Teillä on paperiton toimisto, ettekä te joudu siivoamaan maalitahroja.

Mä kirjotin tän, koska haluan sanoa, että taiteen tekeminen on ihan helvetin hienoa ja et kukaan ei hallitse sitä kaikkea ilman opettelua ja et vaikka osais jo yhden tavan ni jonku toisen tavan opettelussa täytyy silti alottaa alusta ja se on fine.

Ku katot jonku tekemää kuvaa, joka on ihan törkeen upee, näet mahdollisesti vuosien ja ehkä vuosikymmentenki harjottelun lopputuloksen. Ku ostat taidetta, et maksa vaan siitä kuvasta, vaan siitä osaamisesta. Siitä et joku, jolla on pätevyyttä, jota sulla ei ole, tekee sulle jotain hienoa.
