ok because i have severe brain worms i decided to look up hijikata's sword to see how accurately it was depicted between the two pieces of media i am currently consuming that happen to include the oni no fukucho himself 👍

so it was believed that for the majority of his career in the shinsengumi hijikata wielded a sword called izuminokami kanesada

these images are from the hijikata toshizo museum in his hometown of hino. unfortunately the lighting isn't great for getting a look at the details on the tsuba but this replica sword gives us a better view

(we're just going to trust that it's accurate 🚶‍♂️)

now if you look you look up izuminokami kanesada you will get nothing but touken ranbu so i figure i might was well include that guy

this is actually a pretty accurate representation of the sword. it has the white ray skin handle with black wrappings and sageo cord and the shape and design of the tsuba is identical. even the design of the kojiri is the same

overall 10/10

moving on i'm going to start with hijikata from gintama. at the start of the anime he uses this sword that. somewhat? resembles the kanesada

it has a rounded tsuba and white ray skin handle with dark tsuka wrappings but that's about where the similarities end. however hijikata actually breaks this sword early on and for the majority of the anime uses the muramasha (a parody of the muramasa)

now the anime and official art and manga all seem to have different designs for the muramasha but in general it seems to have an oval shaped brass colored tsuba with red tsuka which. does not resemble the real muramasa at all. you can see here that the real muramasa has a black squarish tsuba with goldish tsuka wrappings

gintama toshi gets a 6/10 with his first sword doing the heavy lifting may it rest in peace

interestingly tho what this does resemble is hijikata's sword in ishin

it's not an exact match but the tsuba has a similar shape and color. unfortunately that's basically where the similarities end

you can see here that both the ray skin and tsuka wrappings are different colors from both the muramasa and the kanesada. and you can't see it here cuz im at the image limit for this post but the sheathes are different as well

4/10 it looks cool as shit tbh

memory is sacred 🤝 oni no fukucho 🤝 severing of hair as severing a link to the past 🤝 human (family, friends, romance) connection as proof of humanity 🤝 a human is born from parents -> fathers death before his birth, never seeing his mother 🤝 gintoki coming from the same narrative place as shouyou (a child borne from the ether) -> sorachi wasnt lying when he said hijikata was originally planned to be the protagonist and had gintokis face -> a bastard child learns that a name is just that (a rose バラ by any other name would be as sharp) -> IVE LOST THE THREAD HERE.

(this links to the other thing too but unfortunately this isnt a corkboard with string.) throwing away your humanity to exist as a sword -> you are the soul of the shinsengumi we are the sword that protects you -> a sword is merely a tool and is not inherently good or evil 🤝 a swords job is to not break under pressure -> hijikata-gintoki rooftop meetcute. dont you dare waver (thank you syaku.) 🤝 kyuubei-hijikata meeting. i love it when swords crack. -> shinsengumi crisis cursed sword muramasha (sc dangoya scene about bearing it because theyll laugh at him down in hell otherwise) -> when the cursed sword sticks with you forever (good) and reveals that you too, are a human with your own worldly desires and free will other than mayonnaise and cigarettes (bad) 🤝 (you are the sword of the shinsengumi etc.) hijikata is simple because his sole motivation is to protect kondou at all costs except this is a lie because as much as he would like to deny himself he is actually a human (like everyone else.) -> self flagellation is the answer always. -> i believe in the kondou-mitsuba-gintoki trinity -> farewell shinsengumi izakaya goodbye scene 🤝 ssa “im gonna search for the yorozuya” + “our battlefield is by their side” maybe a beaten collared muzzled stray mutt and a human who keeps that oni mask up for fear of being found out can learn how to be a human again -> thread lost

I’m glad you’ve noticed my blog! Thank you! Here are you headcanons for pining Gintoki and Hijikata. ^^

Sakata Gintoki

Gintoki is definitely not the type to wear his heart on his sleeve, but when it comes to them, he gets a little more obvious, a spark behind his dead fish orbs if you will. Could you blame him though? They’re constantly plaguing his thoughts.

He isn’t very good at expressing his emotions with words either, hence he’s never really considered doing one of those “shoujo manga” confessions. He doesn’t want to look bad in front of them, stumbling around with his words and all.

Although he isn’t a fan of overly dramatic confessions, the thought of how he would communicate these feelings is always on the back of his mind. He doesn’t want to admire from afar forever.

When the person he’s pining for is nearby, Gintoki cant help but take in their actions and words like a sponge. It may appear as if he’s picking his nose again, but he’s properly paying attention to whatever it is they’re saying or doing in the moment. He’s wants to see that captivating smile stretching across their face, and hear their soothing voice flow into his ears.

It may not look like it from a surface level, but Gintoki is also quite insecure. Not so much about his looks, but whether or not the person he loved would want to be together. He himself understands best that he’s got a fair share of bad habits, which causes him to sometimes wonder if they’ll be happy with him.

Hijikata Toshirou

Hijikata’s a busy man, but when it comes to them, Hijikata tries his best to see them as much as possible, be it a change in his patrol route, or a “coincidence” when he takes a walk on his days off.

Hijikata, although he makes an effort to see them, tries his best to hide how he feels toward them, also limiting the amount of time he spends with them. Sure, he likes them, but he also doesn’t want people to target them as revenge against the Shinsengumi or, even worse, revenge against him.

For the same reason, Hijikata is hesitant in taking the next step and confessing as he wants them to be safe and happy. Hijikata isn’t sure if he can provide them with that. Sometimes Hijikata has the urge to simply say how he feels as he can protect them, but other times, Hijikata thinks they deserve better than to be with such a dangerous person.

He would never admit it, but Hijikata’s quite skilled in writing letters, able to put his feelings onto paper, but for some reason he’s considerable worse at saying them aloud. He’s caught himself absentmindedly writing about them, yet he doesn’t have the heart to throw those papers away.

Hijikata’s not as skilled in controlling his facial expressions as a certain silver wavy haired man, as his face would occasionally betray him. If they do something, like smile or laugh, or anything Hijikata finds cute or captivating, a small hint of a blush can be found on his face. Unfortunately, It goes away rather quickly, he is the Oni no Fukucho after all.

Just for fun, I typed up some similarities I noticed between some Haikuu!! boys and some Hakuouki boys. So, here goes...

Hinata Shoyo | Todou Heisuke

•One of the youngest members of the group

•Constantly being underestimated because of his size, so always eager to prove his capability

•Happy little ball of sunshine and energy

•Can literally make friends with anything that breathes

Kageyama Tobio | Hijikata Toshizo

•King of the Court; Oni no Fukucho = same vibe

•That very intense glare thing

•Super intense about what he's passionate about

•Not the greatest at socializing with people outside of his group of comrades

•Looks unapproachable, but is actually pretty chill as long as you're not interrupting his work/practice.

Sawamura Daichi | Kondou Isami

•Fearless leader of his group

•Precious human that can be fierce when he needs to be

•Certainly the dad-type figure of the group

•Has ambitious goals he's working very hard to reach

•Puts his team first; always has their best interest in mind

•Can inspire his team just by being there

Tanaka Ryunosuke | Nagakura Shinpachi

•Excitable muscle boy

•Very loud

•Considers himself a ladies man, but let's be real, he would completely melt into a puddle of awkwardness if a girl actually gave him attention

•Secretly (not that secretly) a softy beneath all that loud, tough talk

Tsukishima Kei | Okita Souji

•Most sarcastic person in his group

•Enjoys getting a rise out of people

•Really only lets his guard down around his best friend

•Hates being underestimated

•Seems pretty passive about things, but cares more than he lets on

•Constantly analyzing everything around him

•Has no tolerance for idiots

Sugawara Koushi | Saito Hajime

•Always looking out for the well being of his bros

•Doesn't really want to draw a lot of attention to himself

•Very perceptive

•Likes tofu

Oikawa Tooru | Kazama Chickage

•He is very aware of his superior abilities and doesn't mind flaunting it

•He has a lot of fangirls

•Enjoys toying with people

•Likes being the center of attention

•Very full of himself

also more fun facts about hijikata bc i have a severe case of brain worms

he liked reading poetry and even wrote many himself although it's debatable whether they were very good. you can read a collection of them here

he never actually mastered the tennen rishin style but he did use what he learned to develop the shinsengumi kenjutsu fighting style

he was known as 鬼の副長 (oni no fukucho aka demon vice commander) because of his ruthlessness in enforcing the kyokuchuu hatto which was the so called iron code of the shinsengumi

he was known as somewhat of a pretty boy and was popular among women but he was very narcissistic and would collect love letters from geisha to send to his home town

Thus Oni Musashi and Oni Fukucho became best friends. What could possibly go wrong.
