2024 January Media Post Thingy

i dont post on tumblr.com a whole lot i mostly just love to reblog but i wanna see if this novelty thing sticks because for like 2020-2022 i had like a text file i did that i stopped doing in 2023 or so for like video games in particular and i unno it was fun but i got distracted cus half that month i was doing retail anything special happen this year yet? not especially, but since soon ill be very busy with something that IS indeed special, and my bday, i may as well make a post now bc i feel like i will be preoccupied for the first good bit of febuary personally ( exciting life stuff ! ) last disclaimer is that at some point i would want to add movies and shows to this list when i get around to it , but for me december and january've kinda blended in that regard.. me and my friends watched Wonka recently and i was kinda so-so on that just cus' i think the original movies a certain way i guess. oops. i think there were other movies/ shows too and comics as well but once again, december-january blurr for me. Furthermore, any piece of media i pick out for this will also have a completely arbitrary doc-ism secondary title just because i feel like it. Enjoy! VIDEO GAMES! ! MARIO GALAXY 2 < SECOND ROUNDEST MARIO GAME >

I wanna say i spent from the first of january to the third on this game, but my Wii Menu calendar is a little fucked up....

Whoops! Regardless, i do have a bit of a background of not completely " gel-ing " with the original Mario Galaxy gameplay wise in my own friendgroup, to mostly dismayed reactions n junk. In short, i think artistically the game's merits are absolutely fantastic, but since i played it on the switch 3d mario collection some time after sunshine, i do think the control scheme is overall pretty limited, and that does apply to mario galaxy 2, i guess, but methodically, i think playing this game on a wiimote does make the limitation feel i guess more fair in terms of like camera control and deliberacy n stuff... the galaxy games and presentation are completely amazing works of art obviously and theres some good music here but i think between galaxy 1 and 2 i definitely prefer 2 mechanically. i enjoy the level scenarios more thats primarily it, i think. I'm so-and-so on how comets work and how many stars you need to get to get to the end ( I think how comets spawn is a little filler-ey and waiting for them to appear in a level i don't know it'll appear in was a little obtuse to figure out, even if i did eventually manage it and actually enjoy the challenges they offer. its mostly just really annoying comet spawning mechanics that were a drag. a very deliberately- controlling mario i guess and being more familiar with galaxy's control probably was why i was able to enjoy this one more ? Yay! I think i still enjoy 3d world more then this and most other 3D marios, though. It's a good video game and i liked the boss fights in it, theyre surprisingly cool and dynamic for what i'm used to from the mario series. I didn't do the special world, though. i wasn't compelled to go that far past the credits. ( You'd think this game's doc-ism title would come from it being the sequel to mario galaxy, and thus, second roundest, but honestly, i think in terms of the mario series scale, Mario Pinball Land has round mario in it, and galaxy 2's starship mario is definitely, i think, rounder then the comet observatory from galaxy one. That makes Mario Galaxy the third-roundest mario game! )

From around the 6th to the 13th, I ended up playing --- ACTRAISER RENAISSANCE < THE CEREAL-BOX GOD GAME >

actraiser is definitely a mixed video game for me, because i definitely see the merit in it. It's a very unconventional splicing of both sidescrolling and city-development game, a " remake " of a novel SNES/Famicom game with the same premise. You're like a big god of light guy who sends your soul into this little warrior guy who cleanses the land of monsters for around 6 different settlements to florish in with the assistance of a cute little angel friend and whatever area's flavor of local legend the game gives you after a story event or two to hold down the place from encroaching monster dens and such; and, apparently exclusive to this version, there's also little tower-defense segments that come in waves around four or five times per area, which in my opinion are kind of this game's weakest link, but not without like Some kind of merit. At the end of each town segment, there is also a big boss fight, usually tying into the story in some way.

i think it has a very very cool " world select " map. one very postive thing is that it updates in real time with your progress in the area, so you can watch it all expand from your little sky palace once you've done your buisness there. it's really satisfying and pretty... this game's got really good 2d art, i think. I've heard people be mixed on the sidescroller art in comparison, but i think it's got a charm to it. I think it's cute and while its probably more a budgetary limitation, i do like how everything kind of looks like one of those fantasy stills you can sometimes buy from arts and crafts stores. The framerate on them is like a bit lower then what you'd expect from a modern game but mechanically its still very responsive, which makes me feel like it's a stylistic choice to look more stop-motioney, i guess. Maybe im just a fan of ham, i unno.

In terms of the overhead segments, it's pretty basic and automated, which is fine by me, and perfectly workable for what it is, i think, conceptually ( they build out on your own but you do kind of " guide their hand " when it comes to where paths go, at least. It does lead to a weird meta thing being to zap your own people with holy lightning to destroy stuff you don't want though, which feels flavorfully odd for a benevolent god.... I guess it's fair enough

the main problem with the game is that the tower defense segments, the main major feature and addition of this remake, does kind of take the game's pacing and drop flat in the middle of it. They're usually decently long segments where you can only indirectly fight, and are kind of slow. They also usually need you to protect or have a certain number of buildings left by the end of it ( having all of your farms in tact by the end, defending the main temple, not having every house burned down ) which can be a bit more difficult then it sounds. i dont think the segments are bad or anything, there's just.... entirely too many of them??? like mechanically theyre fine they just happen every other second between story events and it feels kind of padded after like the second one in one area, and there's about 5 per area of increasing difficulty. i definitely think if anything could be reined back, it'd be that. I don't think the story is too special , either, the angel kind of just quips sassily about the story at you from time to time and your followers make requests of you at the temple, usually manifesting in the town segements as " have x number of y " or getting the population to a set threshold, or getting x number of resources. The structure of each area isn't shaken up too much, mostly just " new settlement, find a guy, guy isnt so sure about this lord of light guy but through fighting alongside u and some small character arch, they become a champion of yours or something and you meet the scary boss guy and kill them and weaken the big bad dark lords forces behind it all, but there were two segments i liked, both pretty late-game, with the ice wyvern and this guy named shemall whose only affront to you is having a more popular humanitarian ideology ( who actually becomes the dominant ideology in the segment leaving the church literally empty for a good portion of it , and is only tied into the status quo by the dark lord himself possessing the other temple and shit and starting a really really bad storm of eeevil , who i like a bit ) and a boss in the last area who was implied to once be a force of good but ultimately subservient to the bad guys will, which is basic but i tihnk neat. also they have cool designs. )

Shrug! I think it's neat but it has problems that bog it down! Waah! i dont regret playing it or anything but it's like a 7! ( It's kind of like a game you'd get in one of those cereal boxes, and it's a little cheap, but its endearing to me ? ) TOREE 3D < LEAST-CONSEQUENCIAL SPOILER AWARD >

finished this game the same day i finished actraiser, in one sitting. Ummm... i know this game's like a crowd favorite, and it's, like, solid, but i don't really have all that much to say about it ..... Like, it's an OK platformer, with like really great value for your dollar, but i don't really have all that much to say about it, endearment-wise. I think also that the VHS horror elements are largely unnecessary and are kind of whatever, but I know i'm not really the audience for it. That's the spoiler, i guess. Around the same time, in a date range I don't remember, I basically ended up completely reorganizing my room for Life Stuff, and ended up giving a really cool fan project a try, from a series i've always wanted to try more of, if not for the language barrier, in the form of -- STARFY ORIGINS ( Densetsu no Stafy ) < SPLASHABLE VIDEO GAME >

Waaaaaaaa ! i love starfy ( Stafy? ) You probably wouldn't have the background on it unless you knew me, but i'm a real DS head, and one of my earliest games on the system, one i have vivid memories with, was The Legendary Starfy, an " underwater platformer ", mostly known as being a kirby-like game in style, and being the last entry in a mostly untranslated series of platformers that're japanese-exclusive!

Essentially, what this means for me was that there was , for a very long portion of my kid-years, a bunch of video games out there that i knew i'd be instantly endeared by if ONLY i could play them ( since, even at the time, gba emulation for me was kind of mystical and out of my ability ) ; and , at least in my mind, that meant it'd have just as many lovable characters and such as the the starfy I got to play, anecdotaly meaning the only exposure i'd have to these games beforehand is ferverously looking up stuff on the starfy wiki and watching youtube videos of the final bosses and stuff; basically just lementing for years that " aww,, theres no translation. i guess it's just too obscure " with the rest of the starfy fans i've heard about online, until recently! I emulated this game on Vita and overall i'd just have to say its a cute, decently-novel-but-slightly-padded 2d sidescroller. I'd say it was like ok-levels of worth the wait, but im honestly just floored that a translation of the first game happened at all, and i think its awesome what's been done. It's selfish to want, but i'd really like to try the other DS starfy game sometime, whenever that's translated. It's honestly one of the few loose-end games i can even think of and mechanically that one's a whole lot more out there then this one, which, other then the novelty of playing this game i've only heard murmurs of for over a decade, is just kind of alright. kudos to the fan translators making this game work out!!! I wonder if the team that did this have plans for the others now that this game's been translated....

idk i think this green girl is neat and the arcade style bullethell gameplay's really fun on steam deck; i just think the girls should be like 7 years older each then what the game says because the loli aspects of this game are kind of uncomfortable and unavoidable and i don't like them at all... the gothic horror halloween aestetic the game has otherwise absolutely rocks and is just up my alley, though. i guess its just part of the style theyre going for, but it's a really unfortunate Japanese quirk you kind of have to just tolerate for the other Very Good aspects the game has gameplay and artisticly wise ( music and art direction is awesome )

really cool open-world emerald rom hack, similar to crystal clear and the like. I've technically played it already, but this is the first time i've completed it, though i completely broke the game really early into it that undermined it in a way i didnt realize for about 7 gyms, before i accidentally nuked the overworld with a massive bug that scrambled my player's gender and made the overworld color pallete fuck-ey, which, im not ggoing tto blame the developer on, i'm summing that up to a cosmic ray or something. i think with time and with more polish i could see myself liking this more then crystal clear, but time'll see. MIGHTY GUNVOLT < tie in video game i've ever played >

typing this like an hour ins making me realize this docism thing might not stick but mighty gunvolt is neat i guess i never finished it when i first played gunvolt and obsessed over that when it was new ( Mighty gunvolt came as a free download if you bought the first game digitally, you see ) because of the first boss, but now as a more experienced gamer, that's really just because the fire boss is kind of just a weird difficulty spike at the start that the rest of the game difficulty wise doesnt really match up to. It's a cute, very short ( i beat all 3 character campaigns in two hours , liesurely ) platformer styled like megaman, and that's all it really needed to be at the time. i wouldnt go out of my way to play it these days if it wasnt for my own baggage with the gunvolt series in general, and if it wasnt for my much greater affection for its sequel, mighty gunvolt burst.... I'm just gonna say if this game interests you , you really should just play burst instead. Even if you've played the latter before, you're really not missing out on much more then a moderately ok side scroller. it sure is a tie in demake on the early 3ds ! 6180 THE MOON

Surprisingly, this game's on alot of platforms? I just kind of chose it on a whim 'cus it was on the top of the list of H-SHOP stuff and i was looking for something short to play, but it's pretty artsy.

It's a puzzle-platformer where the gimick is that the ball wraps around the screen when you fall down or up, which works really well with the 3ds in my opinion. with the compression and stuff on the 3ds and how the game was laid out, it affectionately reminds me of a flash game you'd find on coolmath or the such, and its very relaxed ( if a little wonky ) . i dont have anything bad to say on it or anything its just a small little game i played on a whim. it's very minimalistic, if you're into that aestetic, you might like this. That's the last of the wholy " new " stuff i finished this month, and id say overall its a solid start for me, and kind of out of season ( very octobery-feeling game lineup in retrospect..! But that month's always usually crowded with obligations and stuff, so i doubt i'd be in a mood for them even at that time of year.. )

Also, i gave a try to cavestory on wiiware, first time i've played the game in a few years now since the switch rerelease! I think its just as fun as i found it when i first discovered it on 3ds, and, while i have a friend who adamantly disagrees, i actually really do like the OST of this version. It's a cute mutation on the games ost that in my opinion enhances the kind of forelorn vibe the game originally had, and i really like the blown up art of this version of cave story, even if it does have nichalis's hands all up in the matter. since it's unlocked from the start, i played the game on Curly Story till the true ending. I still love this game alot. Sometime i'll trick a certain individual into finishing it, i hope.

Steamboat Willie's version of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain in 2024

Mickey entered the public domain on Monday (1st); Walt Disney's first short film featuring Mickey Mouse is available for public use in the United States.

Steamboat Willie is a 1928 animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Produced in black and white by Walt Disney Studios, the cartoon is considered the debut of both Mickey and Minnie Mouse, although both characters appeared in a test screening of Plane Crazy several months earlier.

For a long time, the image of Mickey Mouse has been associated with the Walt Disney Company brand, but now on the first day of 2024, Disney's copyright on "Steamer Willie" and the silent version of Plane Crazy -made in 1928- expired.

Plane Crazy is a 1928 American animated short film directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. The cartoon, released by the Walt Disney Studios, was the first apparition of Mickey Mouse and his girlfriend Minnie Mouse and was originally a silent film.

Steamboat Willie is especially notable for being one of the first cartoons with synchronised sound, as well as one of the first cartoons to feature a fully post-produced soundtrack, which distinguished it from earlier sound cartoons. Music for Steamboat Willie was arranged by Wilfred Jackson and Bert Lewis, and it included the songs “Steamboat Bill”, a composition popularised by baritone Arthur Collins during the 1910s, and “Turkey in the Straw”, a composition popularised within minstrelsy during the 19th century.

The film has received wide critical acclaim, not only for introducing one of the world’s most popular cartoon characters but also for its technical innovation. In 1994, members of the animation field voted *Steamboat Willie* 13th in the book The 50 Greatest Cartoons, which listed the greatest cartoons of all time.

Nevertheless, the film has been the centre of a variety of controversies, notably regarding the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act passed in the United States. It was close to entering the public domain in the U.S. several times: each time, copyright protection was extended. It could have entered the public domain in four different years: first in 1955, renewed in 1986, then to 2003 by the Copyright Act of 1976, and then to 2023 by the Copyright Term Extension Act (also known pejoratively as the “Mickey Mouse Protection Act”) of 1998.

There are differences between the 1928 Mickey and the company mascot today. Mickey from "Steamboat Willie" does not have the gloves and big shoes of current Mickey, and his eyes are small black ovals with no pupils.

The decision is quite symbolic of the firm, and often contradictory, relationship that Disney has established with the issue of copyright. On the one hand, the studios played an important role in lobbying and pushing for the approval of the law that extended the term of copyright to 95 years.

However, Disney itself built an extensive and successful legacy by building on works that were in the public domain. This is the case of "Frozen", inspired by "The Snow Queen", by Hans Christian Andersen; "The Lion King", which is based on Shakespeare's "Hamlet".

Plus, Mickey isn't the only classic character to enter the public domain in recent years. On January 1, 2022, the copyright on AA Milne's original Winnie the Pooh character also expired.

One of E. H. Shepard's illustrations for the "A Pooh Party" chapter in A. A. Milne's 1926 "Winnie-the-Pooh", now in the Public Domain in the United States (copyright protection in Shepard's native United Kingdom will last until 2047).

Only the original versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse from 1928 will be free of copyright, so it is not possible to use the characters with copyrighted elements or their later versions; Anyone wishing to use the image needs to be careful not to confuse consumers into thinking the creation is produced or sponsored by Disney as a matter of trademark law.

Disney is not giving up on its famous mouse, they still maintain the copyright on more recent versions of Mickey, such as his version in “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” from Fantasia (1940), as well as trademarks that have the mouse as a brand identifier because of the company's trademark on later versions of Mickey Mouse, you also won't see Mickey serving as another company's mascot, Disney owns Mickey, "He cannot be used in this recognisable way for advertising."

I Am On A Journey to Watch AS MANY Films with Crispin Hellion Glover in Them As Possible

I will do my best to watch the films/shows and give a high-level view of my thoughts on each.

I am playing catch-up compared to my other social media accounts but, to be honest, Tumblr is perfect for this kind of thing. 

So... Buckle up because this is going to be a LONG ride. (: 

First, I’d like to personally thank Crispin Glover for all the fantastic performances and artworks he’s created over the years. His approach to acting is beautifully unique, and every single one of his performances are memorable. Though I haven’t had the pleasure of viewing his own films, I’ve at least seen some of his artwork through the books he publishes. Now that I’ve found myself down a rabbit hole of sorts, not just watching these movies but also listening to all kinds of interviews and such, I am a huge admirer of the way he approaches what he does and creates. 

TL;DR: I’ve found boundless inspiration and joy from observing both his craft and his art. So, for that and for a lot more I’m struggling to put into words because they are genuinely such big emotions, thank you!

Why am I doing this? Because I want to!

To kick things off, and in the order in which I cover this journey on other social media platforms, a rewatch of one of my favorite slasher flicks was in order. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)! 

If you remember this movie at all, which you should because it is the 2nd best film in the franchise, you may recall the awkward kid who kept talking about being horny, obsessed over his friend calling him a "dead fuck," and danced real wacky in that one scene. Ya know, Jimmy “Jimbo” Mortimer. Yes! That one! That was Crispin Glover alright. 

Though the role is small, his performance in this is just exactly what I’ve come to expect from most, if not all, of Crispin’s performances: oh so memorable. 

I love this performance a lot. Even before I was aware of Crispin Glover, I was enamored with just how strange the character was and how that differed from a lot of the other performances in the Friday the 13th franchise. 

A bit of a fun fact: Crispin has talked about that dance he does and mentions that the song that was played on set during filming was not what ended up being used in the final product of that scene. Apparently, the song used for filming was AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” Cool folks on the internet have attempt to show that off so check this shit out:

As part of a double feature with Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, I watched Back to the Future (1985) for the first time. Yes, the first time. I know how shameful for a 28-year-old such as myself. 

I genuinely felt that the best descriptor for the film was "cute". It was cute! It’s one of those movies that I felt like I had really already seen due to how references to it have permeated our culture. 

I can understand why the film is a classic. The way Crispin plays George McFly makes him an incredibly endearing character. I loved the “George-isms” that Crispin created, that carry over from old George to young George. It’s excellent work.

I think Back to the Future is talked about too much, in all honesty, and especially with the whole lawsuit and incredibly harmful shit that happened to Crispin with Back to the Future II, a movie which I straight up refuse to see. 

But yeah, all that aside, Back to the Future was cute and a fun time.

Shout out to the free streaming service Tubi, which has been incredible kind to me and provided SO many of the films on my list. 

One of those films is Bartleby (2001). Bartleby is a surrealist, sit-com-style office comedy film adaptation of Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby, the Scrivener". Crispin plays Bartleby, and genuinely ends up having few lines except for, of course, “I would prefer not to” or some iteration of that. 

This film ended up being Supremely My Shit in terms of what I look for in a comedy. 

I LOVED this movie, so much so that I now own it on DVD and plan to show it to everyone. I cannot recommend it enough.

Next up, Wizard of Gore (2007). A splatter/noir horror film. This is a remake of the 1970 film of the same name. 

I will say that this film, overall, wasn’t that great. It has some highlights though! For instance, Crispin hams it up as a wacko magician who has an outrageously huge codpiece. And, oh hey! Brad Dourif and Jeffrey Combs are in it! 

As I’ve sat with this one, it’s one where I can say the performance that Crispin gives is the real draw here. He’s absolutely perfect for something so strange and unusual as this.

Now, I should back up and take some time to talk about Willard (2003). I have a lot of thoughts, as well as some fun facts. 

This remake of a 1971 film of the same name, which in turn was based off of the Stephen Gilbert novel Ratman’s Notebooks, is a standout so far for the films I've seen Crispin Glover in. I knew going into viewing it that it was well regarded in his filmography. I can understand why! It's incredible. 

It is a horror movie but not in the way that is typical. To me, the horror lies in the treatment of Willard, particularly in the workplace. And then, of course, later the horror continues but more in the form of self-inflicted acclimation of choices made by Willard (if only he were nicer to Ben! Oh, things would’ve been different). I do believe reading the rats as a force of nature as an element of horror is pretty accurate.

Though the part that make this film an instant comfort movie for me/a film that immediately went on my "get to know me movies list" is Crispin's performance and the framing of Willard's abuse in the workplace. I have some pretty bad workplace-related trauma from sustained abuse by past and previous employers. I have to admit to feeling some level of catharsis in relating to the Willard character, as well as viewing him as a kind of hero despite serious pitfalls and gruesome mistakes throughout, including a variety of self-inflicted repression of emotion and being (also I'd say the character is neurodivergent-coded, and thats highly relatable to me). I also think that [spoilers] when he kills his boss with a horde of rats--not for himself, entirely, but for Socrates--I felt that in my core like, yes, it's so much harder to stand up for yourself, even if you can't take more abuse, but it's easier when you have something rally behind or protect or avenge, in this situation. Am I thinking too hard about the contents of a 2003 horror movie? Probably. 

Anyway. The rats are awesome in this film too, as is the performance of R. Lee Ermey. I wish New Line Cinemas let the film be rated R. I feel like more gore and Ermey riffing off strings of cursing would've been nice. Apparently, there was an R-rated version but it is lost now. I've been able to view some of the deleted scenes and I can see where an R-rated version could have been. 

A great aspect of promotional materials for Willard was that Crispin Glover recorded a cover of Michael Jackson's "Ben" (yes, it's about the rat). It's my understanding the original song was recorded for the 1973 sequel to Willard, also titled Ben. Anyway, the music video for Glover's take on "Ben" was also directed by him. It's an absolute treat. Check it out: 

While I have you here, I'd like to let you know that the opening credits of Willard feature imagery from Glover's own published book -- Rat Catching. Rat Catching, published in 1988, is a heavily illustrated piece of visual and textural art built from the 1896 book Studies in the Art of Rat Catching.

Crispin has published other works similar to Rat Catching: Oak Mot (1989), Concrete Inspection (1990), What it is, and How it is Done (1992), and Round My House (2016). In each he rearranges text, blacks out certain standing passages (a la blackout poetry), and adds his own prose and occasionally images into the margins and elsewhere, thus creating an entirely new story. Plus, as is my understanding, a visual feast for the eyes. 

GUESS WHAT THE COOLEST PART ABOUT THESE BOOKS ARE?! You can get em directly from the guy himself! Literally. You can chuck $30-ish + shipping at him directly (metaphorically, of course) and you'll get a book. 

I fully intend to get my hands on at least a few of them... or all of them, ya know, casually. If you also think these books sound rad as fuck, here's the website: crispinglover.com. Do it. Go get an awesome book created by an awesome artist. It's cool to do.

On my TV back a few weeks ago was Twister (1989). 

From what I had previously read about the film, it billed as a comedy but in actuality it is more drama. It is an adaptation of the the novel Oh by Mary Robison. 

The film features music by Hans Zimmer, a cameo by William S. Burroughs, and, of course, a late 80s Crispin Glover doing his weird lil thing that I love oh so much. It was... bizarre!! 

I can’t really say if it is good or bad--it just is. I can’t even say if the ending is good or bad, it simply is what it is. Having sat with it for a while, I can appreciate Twister for eliciting emotion. I was pretty fed up with some of the character and confused at their motivations but at least it got me thinking about what was happening and asking the question “what are they doing and why?” That’s important in its own right.

Let me just say, I was VERY excited to watch We Have Always Lived in the Castle (2018). I am a huge fan of the original novel, which I read when I was much younger. I remember starting to watch this film when it came to Netflix in 2019 but failing to finish it due to life events (I think we were moving), but I can say now that I have finished watching it! 

I am happy to report that We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a fairly faithful adaptation of the novel, give or take, and was really enjoyable to see. I feel like it is a hard novel to adapt since Merricat is an unreliable narrator and it is all told from her perspective, but I think this film does a solid job illustrating that. 

I'm generally very pleased with the framing of the characters in the adaptation and the performances are great. I don't think anyone else could do Charles except for Sebastian Stan. He's so good at playing a total dick.

On that note, I don't think anyone else could've played Julian Blackwood like Crispin Glover. Comparing to the novel, I had no idea how to really imagine Julian in a lot of instances but seeing this character performed in this way makes SO much more sense to me. Incredible work.

I could probably go on, but I highly recommend checking it out for yourself, especially if you're a fan of the novel!

Ohhh Lucky Day (2019)! It was AWESOME. Though, I didn’t keep enough detailed thoughts about it so I apologize for a short and sweet overview of some highlights. 

I swear to god this film must've flown under the radar when it came out because I hadn't heard of it until recently (but I distinctly remember seeing showtimes for it back when it came out). 

It was a damn good time. Crispin plays a contract killer of sorts who has the most over-the-top French accent (despite not being French at all) and every scene he's in is golden. His serious demeanor for some of the more ridiculous scenes just works and brought a big stupid grin to my face.  

I’ve seen this film twice now it’s just a masterfully done action/comedy/drama--and yes, it really does blend the genres so well.

Before I take a break from letting this live in my drafts, I want to talk about a big one for me: Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, Episode 5: “Pickman's Model”. The one that started this journey. And I know, I'm so utterly late to the party! I live in my own lil horror-themed film bubble most of the time until I find some performances I enjoy and really gnaw on, for lack of a better word. So this kicked it off entirely.

The whole show is a standout for me. I enjoyed every single episode and every story. I think the most technically scary was “Lot 36″ and the most relatable to me in the way it is framed is “The Outside”. Upon my first watch of the show, I just knew I'd be head over heels for the “Pickman’s Model” retelling. It's my favorite Lovecraft story, and I just love that integration of tangible art and eldritch horror. It's just the best. 

I feel that the adaptation is very strong, and a great depiction of a more modern Lovecraft despite the setting and time period. I loved all the lil reference drops to other works in the Cthulhu Mythos throughout as well -- such a nice touch. 

I felt the relationship that Thurber and Pickman have is so utterly bizarre and my own explanation for why there is a draw there is that "the darkness" itself as described and felt by both character acts as an allegory for queerness. I might be um biased, being a queer person and all, but that's just me. I think it's also valid to interpret the whole relationship as like human curiosity--like hell yeah I'd also be fascinated by this guy's art, if not also a bit frightened! So the draw is simply explained that way... if you so choose. Lots of ways to go on that end of things, and that's rad. 

There is such a a genuine level of depth and understanding of character in the way Crispin plays Pickman. I swear there's not even that much depth in the original Lovecraft story! It's just all on this adaptation, the director, and his performance. It's outstanding, and he really steals the show (and my heart) in this one particularly.  

A lot of folks, and I mean A LOT, didn't seem to appreciate the the truly old-timey Bostonian accent. I see ya’ll out there. C'mon, he worked with THE Erik Singer for that accent to sounds as true-to-time-period as possible -- at least respect it but I find it fascinating how that, being as normal for that setting as it is, given an extra level of strangeness to Pickman as a character (namely because nobody else is doing that, give or take. There are some Massachusetts accents here and there from other characters but there's not really the same level of commitment). 

Also, I thought the way they did Pickman's sketchbook up as a multi-media and textural kinda piece in and of itself was a nice touch -- felt like that was purposely laid out specifically with Crispin in mind to play off the works he creates. Not quite, of course, but I think that's neat and how I’m choosing to read into it.

(Archive) Animated movie of the day: The Road to El Dorado (2000)

Originally posted: January 13th, 2022 I mean, why not. Yesterday we went to the probably inaccurate future, now let's go to the definitely inaccurate past. And believe me, I could spend these 2000 characters and not cover half of the inaccuracies and anachronisms regarding mesoamerican cultures(and the European side of it too, even if costumes are still miles better than the crap you see in shows like Vikings), but here's the thing: this movie is fun enough that I don't really mind.

Honestly, while the animation is beautiful and there's some really impressive set pieces(including some inventive use of effects), the star of the show is the scoundrels that are the protagonist duo (eventually trio) through and through. You almost wish the movie was longer because they bounce from each other very naturally, every new situation being funnier than the last one.

I mean, this movie isn't taking itself seriously. It treats some fairly threatening scenarios with lighthearted silliness, manages to cram some out there adult humor(how did this fly as a family film is beyond me) and even the little drama there is solved by reaffirming the characters' love friendship.

Seriously, this is simply a fun ride that knows it's place and has a good time poking fun at adventure novels of the early XXth century. I wouldn't be surprised if many of it's inaccuracy is completely intentional too. Don't let it cloud your understanding of history but definitely have a laugh.

Long post ahead.

Okay folks, tomorrow begins my last business week of having chromosomally mandated breasts. I wanted to talk about my top surgery journey, as it has been so far.

I've been wanting this for longer than I've been aware of my trans identity. It has likely come from a place of gender dysphoria that, at the time, I could not articulate. By exploring my wants, needs, and feelings about my body, I've been able to build a better relationship with it. I remember asking my mom if I was supposed to be a born a boy in high school. With the thought that my body seemed wrong somehow, that I was wrong somehow. For years, I felt like a floating head, just existing adrift like errant litter.

I've avoided feeling how important this is to me simply because of how big it is. It's an event that the rest of my life will feel the ripples of. I am ready for and terrified of it.

It took a long time to overcome a mental block in pursuing top surgery. I wanted it but was not ready for it, had not felt like I was in a safe landing place to accomplish it. I attended my first appointment with the University of Kansas Health Systems Gender Clinic to discuss surgery. The process began in December 2022 with telehealth visits. From Dr. G and her staff, I was referred to Dr. A for one of two letters.

If you have it, insurance must approve the procedure to cover it. That includes letters from both a psychiatrist (Dr. A) and from a licensed clinical therapist (my therapist, N), attesting to your readiness to undergo surgery. These letters are deeply personal, built from in depth conversations about your identity. They validate your experiences, and outline your plan(s) for care after surgery. Once obtained, I had to send them in to the Gender Clinic, where they helped collect the paperwork I needed.

I attended two telehealth appointments with Dr. G and her nurse in December 2022, the appointment with Dr. A in April 2023, and an appointment with N in May 2023 to get my letters and referrals sorted. After providing the Gender Clinic with both letters, my consultation was scheduled.

I received the call to schedule in July or August of 2023 and my consultation was set for February 20th, 2024. Admittedly, I was devastated at first. Then, I worked through my feelings and accepted that it would still happen even if it was a hot minute. I decided to focus on myself and my social circle, building new relationships and rehashing old ones. I genuinely truly felt alive for the first time in a long time after getting my letters, and I did my best to live alongside my anxiety.

On October 13th, 2023 my surgeon's office called with a sudden opening for a consult on Halloween. It was a glorious rug pull. A panicked delight. I drove out and talked with Dr. P about the process and some expectations. We took photos of my chest from a few different angles (titty mugshots) and sent them to insurance alongside my letters. I was euphoric at the same time as on edge. How soon would my procedure be? How quickly would Dr. P's office get back to me? How far out would the surgery be scheduled from my consultation?

Time passed. I felt many complex things all at the same time. A mouthful of all of the Skittles but in my head. I am eternally grateful for all of my friends for their patience, as well as the space they've allowed me to feel through this. I have been fraught and all over the place, it feels.

When I found out my surgery was approved by my insurance, I was not contacted by Dr. P's office. My anxiety was faster. I checked my insurance account and found that insurance approved sometime after November 1st. I called Dr. P's office and left a message for his nurse, asking after the scheduling process. A few days after that, she called and we scheduled the surgery for January 12th, 2024. More than a month before my consultation had originally been set. What I had thought would take a year if not longer to accomplish had been drastically accelerated.

At some point after my consultation on Halloween, I began to internally feel like Sandy Cheeks trying to beat hibernation. So many small moving parts to this whole thing have had to be organized. From designating responsibilities to my friends, collecting supplies for post-op recovery, and learning as much as I could, plans have fallen into place. Any gaps that arise will be adapted to. (I'm working on unclenching about it still.)

I started going back to therapy regularly to help with the mental load. N says she's noticed I'm more settled in myself and I can feel it. In the way that you know exactly what you need to in dreams- that strange euthymic understanding- I also know that I am ready for this change. I am ready for the discomfort, the vulnerability of it. Just the thought of being more me than before is cathartic. I'm excited for all of the nitty gritty that I know is part of this.

I can't wait to feel how my shoulders unburden. I can't wait to feel sun and air on my skin in lovely weather. I can't wait to be unrestrained, whole, and one with my body.

I can't wait to be at home in myself.

How long have you had the idea or plan for Zorok. With how much effort you put into the prologue it seems like a long time.

Short answer: Came up with the idea in February 2019. Started working on turning it into a video game throughout late 2020/early 2021. Discovered and began learning Twine with the intent to use it to make Zorlok in late September of 2021. Started writing the actual game in Twine in February of 2022.

February 21st, 2019, while discussing which character I'd like to play in an upcoming Monster of the Week campaign: "I think I'm gonna go with a demon so if [any of the other players] want a deal with the devil that could be interesting. If not I think it would be fun if my master was a kid" ... my game master later asks "How old is this kid" I say "I think a jerky middle schooler would be funniest" ... "it could be like his ultimate goal to be the most popular kid"

Later, around fall of 2020 I started working on turning the characters from that campaign into a video game, figuring out lore and how to adapt the story (some stuff on how the characters have changed here). The original plan was to make a full (non-text-based) video game by myself (something like Undertale is what I was picturing).

Started learning the Unity engine and teaching myself pixel art/audio engineering in 2021. Began writing the scripts in Word in summer of 2021. Decided there had to be a better way to do this. Looked into script writing for video games. Learned about a software called Twine. Looked into Twine. Discovered interactive fiction on September 29th, 2021. Created my first tumblr account two days later (post here).

From there I spent a long time learning Twine and experimenting with it while learning more about interactive fiction and the community. Announced my intention to release Zorlok on Halloween of last year (post here). After making Mousetrap in January of this year, I decided I was ready to make Zorlok (and cause I wanted to release it on May 13th, I needed to get working on it). So, I officially began writing the prologue in Twine in February 2022. Made the intro post about the game a month later (March 4th, 2022).

Verbatim Store ‘n’ Go USB 3.0 Drive (64 GB) (Installation and Transferring) - Part 2/Final (Nov. 19th, 2022)

🇵🇷Me: Welcome back to this continuing topic review of my USB Drive. After carefully unboxing during part one, I’m now be doing installation and transfer some of my artworks to check out. However so far, I had going for once or twice of transferring artworks and put it into folders. I can do more if I could still, but here it is that I got them stored from last week. Though don’t know if this will be the last during this topic review. Sure hope I can get my own computer/desktop in the future after going around with my iOS device. What that being said, let’s get right on it.

🇵🇷Me: First I had to do is showing some photos I’ve took with my old iPad Mini. Thankfully that it still had some data despite having its full storage. Anyways, here’s what I set up to install my 5th generation iPad with my Verbatim USB Drive. It’s simple as I plugging to the lighting connector. However, I got a notification as expected; pacifically told me to install the app. Though I could just go to the App Store by search when finding “Store ‘n’ Go” app regardless.

🐰🖌Maxwell: Yeah, but at least you got that app installed. Looks like you’ll be using that when trying to transfer/store with your USB Drive.

🇵🇷Me: Exactly. Now when I visited this app that shows I can store or transfer any photos, videos, music, and more. Which is a good thing if I can do on music and videos via recordings for example.

🐰🖌Maxwell: How about taking a closer look of the external storage after plugging your USB Drive right in? However, it seems the numbers of gigabytes doesn’t match of what it supposed to be 64.

🇵🇷Me: This is because the same way I did with my Sandisk 128GB memory card for my Nintendo Switch; back in January 2020 if you remember, right? It counts for something.

🇵🇷Me: Doing fine. I went to create one file/folder renamed “Inktober 2022” where I transfer my previous Inktober art that I posted back in October this year. This is what I’m going for of testing it out storing my art. It took about few seconds before completion in progress. As long I needed to be careful not to accidentally unplugged or damage my USB Drive. Hoping I’ll make sure to take care with it while using.

🐰🖌Maxwell: Mhm. Though hoping you could’ve do all of your stuff that you’ll be saving later. I mean you still had plenty room to store of your USB Drive. You even came back to do with your V2 artworks of us.

🇵🇷Me: So far you had 58.11 GB from your USB Drive. Still you can do all of your stuff from your iPad devices anytime.

🇵🇷Me: I know. Though after going through this, it safe to say that my Verbatim USB Drive works out fine. Hoping It can hold plenty of my artworks, videos, and music to store with it. Then next time I can get a new USB Drive with bigger storage in the future so I’ll make a note to it.

My thoughts:

🇵🇷Me: From plugging to my 5th generation iPad and installed “Store ‘n’ Go” app, It was a good start when testing out to store my artworks so far. It won’t be long before I can go back again and make sure to store all. As for the design of the USB Drive itself, it was good too with protection caps to secure both Lighting and Type-A connectors. I’m promise it’ll won’t lose it when putting back.

my notes: i was looking into the schedule bc i was telling my assoc friend that we are overdue on reruns and wanted to double check i had my facts straight. i have conclusions bc i take this mobile game more seriously than my actual studies.

its been over a year since MoVo debut and we havent had a rerun. the only other hells that took over a year to get first rerun were 4M (2019Nov-2021Feb) and SoS (2020Jul-2021Aug). its been longer than both for MoVo (2021Jan and counting). MoVo reran in 2022Nov, putting it at almost two years to rerun.

its been almost a year and a half over two years since first rerun of SoS. this is similar to TP (2019Sep-2021Mar) and BM (2020Jul-2022Mar). it hasn't crossed either yet. its crossed both. update: ToL, which debuted two months after SoS, had its second rerun before SoS. SoS finally reran in 2023Sept.

TR and Ark had no hell reruns between them. this hasnt happened since SoS and ToL in 2020, where the schedule was (i think) fucked up by all the collabs they were doing, on top of bringing ToL exactly on anniversary date. update: this repeated with RS and CD.

endnote from the original making of this post: make of all that what u will. or dont. personally the next few months schedule will decide for me if theyre really being stingy with hell reruns, since we have had BM recently and will hopefully be back on track. hopefully. update: as of mid 2023, the schedule seems to be recovering, with one rerun between every two debut hells.
