Yosano, although utterly destroyed by loss, would not feel incomplete without you. Although she loves you deeply, she also has this certain self assuredness within her. She needs other people, as everyone does, but she isn’t incomplete without the people in her life. She’s whole because she’s a living breathing person. The people she loves are what makes her stand tall and struggle but they are not what make her complete.

Yosano’s favorite non-Japanese novel is Jane Eyre. It’s become tradition for her to reread it every winter. She loves works by the Brontë sisters in general, I think. 

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

Yosano gets very cold easily at night so she hates sleeping alone. She often sleeps with a weighted blanket on top of a fleece blanket. If she’s sleeping alone, she usually takes a benadryl. When you’re there, she knocks out like a light after 30 minutes. Right before she goes to sleep, she also likes to read novellas and short stories. Her favorites to read before bed are usually comedies.

As with Yosano, Chuuya would be greatly destroyed by your loss. But you wouldn’t be the first loss he’s ever experienced and you certainly won’t be the last. Chuuya is very used to loss. And while it hurts like hell every time, he understands how it works and he understands how he experiences grief very well. Chuuya’s all too aware of how easy it is to lose people so he’s learned how to keep himself together. Chuuya lives with the burden of loss and it’s loss that propels him forward.

Chuuya’s very particular about his skincare and haircare. His routine times are when he unpacks everything from the day and unwinds. He’s got kind of dry skin but it isn’t very acne prone. His hair is wavy and soft. The hair products often make him smell like coconuts and pineapple.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habits of theirs?)

Chuuya’s sleep is very important to him. His pre-sleep routine lasts an hour because he has to take the time to relax enough to fall asleep. He even likes to have a glass of wine before bed. But once he’s knocked out, he’s clingy as hell. Which kind of sucks in the summer because Chuuya’s body is basically a furnace. His limbs also kind of go everywhere. Very quiet though and he will not wake up until he gets all 8 hours of sleep he needs.

Having been given the “Sho Ho” at birth, Yosano Akiko’s counterpart—the real-life author—was known for her zealous take on both feminism and pacifism.

Side note: Once again, to avoid confusion, I will use the name Sho Ho in reference to the real-life author, and Yosano in reference to the BSD character.

Sho Ho's writings were pretty much out-of-the-ordinary in her time, and despite being suppressed by the social norms of gender hierarchy, she sought to reform society’s view on the cultural perspectives of women and their sexuality (She expressed her love for a woman in one of her poems, but many still argued on whether she identified herself as queer or not.)

"Thou Shalt Not Die," Yosano's ability, is actually named after one of Sho Ho's most famous, controversial poems. She wrote it for her brother, who was a soldier in the war between Russia and Japan (1904-1905). In her poem, she expressed her general distaste for war and how her brother was a part of it.

O my young brother, I cry for you Don't you understand you must not die! You who were born the last of all Command a special store of parents' love

Would parents place a blade in children's hands

Teaching them to murder other men Teaching them to kill and then to die? Have you so learned and grown to twenty-four?

Her words were blunt enough to inflict guilt on her brother's conscience, as she wasn't afraid to express her disapproval over how her brother took part in the typical violent bloodshed and manslaughter of war. Such opinions perturbed the authorities, and her work was eventually banned from the public for a period of time. Later on, it was used as an anti-war statement.

2. Yosano's history.

Now, as for the character in BSD, Yosano is seen to be generally strong-willed, and later on, we see that she is terrifyingly compassionately ambitious in the way she treats her patients. She treasured life itself, and hated the thought of losing a patient.

Yosano had developed her relations with Mori Ougai back in the Great War, when she was just 11 years old. Her ability was a great benefactor in saving lives. Realistically speaking, she was used for her ability to heal injured soldiers and diminish the effect of any casualty acquired.

Initially, she wasn't aware of this, until one of her close friends pointed it out by subtly accusing Mori of manipulating her to participate in the War under the close-to false pretence of 'saving lives.'

As much as her ability did save lives, it also forced soldiers to return to the frontlines and suffer injuries over and over again. The soldiers were never given the opportunity to return to their families because of her ability. This obliged them to carry on in the war without any excuse, inserting them into a vicious cycle they had no escape out of.

Metaphorically speaking, Yosano's hatred for Mori sort of mirrors Sho Ho's disdain for war and fighting, don't you think? The way Kafka materialised Yosano's past was quite interesting because he used chapters 65 and 66 to explain Yosano's dislike for Mori, reflecting how Sho Ho used her poem to explain why she condemned the idea of war and how her brother was part of it.

Before the effect of her ability was fully understood, however, every soldier praised and thanked her for what an angel she was. One of the soldiers she had befriended and gotten close to even kept a tally of the number of times she had saved him. He was the one who gifted her the butterfly hairpin she wore all the time.

The weight of the truth that her ability was a curse rather than a blessing fully dawned on her when her soldier friend ultimately committed suicide, because the fact of being indefinitely trapped in the throes of war agonised him until his spirit gave out. This drove Yosano to loathe her ability, or rather, how it was used.

In the time she participated in the War, Yosano was given the alias 'angel of death' due to the control she retained over the battlefield, but I thought that perhaps Kafka had a reason behind giving her this title, so I did my research.

3. 'Angel of Death' defined.

Side note: I wouldn't want to disrespect any culture or religion, so if my citations are inaccurate and/or disrespectful, do feel free to correct me/let me know! I did research out of pure curiosity, and I don't intend to twist the significance of any of the interpretations.

I had to grow up learning about the basics of religious stuff, so it's kind of nice to study something out of the box, and very much against my father's rigid belief system :D

ARCHANGEL ARIEL

(archangel: an angel of higher rank)

I came across the few characteristics of angels/goddesses and their roles, and the one which really caught my attention was the female archangel, Ariel, the angel of nature.

In Hebrew, the name Ariel means 'altar' or 'lioness of God,' and her role is to heal. In addition to that, she is also recognised as a helper to another one of the seven main archangels, Raphael, whose role is to provide physical and emotional healing, too.

She is the protecter of the environment and the animals therein, and is bestowed with the duty to oversee the order of heavenly bodies as well as earth's natural resources. She assures the sustenance of food, water, shelter, and supplies of human beings, much like how a nurse is to a patient I suppose.

In relation to Yosano, I think this part is pretty self-explanatory, or perhaps this is blown out of proportion HA, so take this as a suggestion rather than a fact, because I'd like to believe that Kafka had a reason for giving Yosano a title as such.

In the past, I've come across the angel of death only to perceive it as a female grim reaper of some sort, so it was pretty cool to find that the word 'angel' and 'death' made up a title of a someone like Ariel, one of the purest forms of humility and compassion.

GREEK GODDESS PANAKEIA

For my beloved (wannabe/or not) students of Greek mythology (much like myself, let's make a cult!), you've probably heard of Panakeia, the goddess of healing. Medicine finds most of its vital significance in Greek history, and in its mythology, Panakeia is actually known for her ability to heal any kind of sickness.

Her name means 'panacea,' which is actually defined as a remedy for all diseases. Terminal diseases and injuries lead to death, right? This would bring us back to Yosano's ability to nullify any injury's effects on a person, keeping them from death itself.

Now, we know that in order for Yosano's ability to work, her patient, or victim, has to be in a near-death condition in order for her treatment to take effect. This can't exactly fit into the description of resurrection, but it can be described as some sort of rebirth.

GREEK GODDESS PERSEPHONE

So another goddess which reminds me of Sho Ho/Yosano, is Persephone, the goddess of spring and rebirth. Before Hades, the god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone to take her to live with him, Persephone lived a happy life.

Hades, with his nature of darkness and the like, was captivated by how pure Persephone was, and stole her away from her former life to live in an environment which differed sharply from her natural aura of purity.

Remember when Yosano's friend left a note behind before he killed himself? The note said nothing except for, "You are too righteous." Take that as you will, but figuratively speaking, you could say Mori takes the role of Hades in the story, while Yosano can be portrayed as Persephone.

Sho Ho can also be a parallel of Persephone, in that she had to adapt to the realities of war and disharmony, while Persephone had to adapt to the raw darkness of the underworld with Hades.

Sho Ho stood against society's norms and decided to reform it, making her one of the most well-known feministic pacifist in history, while Persephone managed to escape from the underworld to return to her former position, earning the title the 'Bringer of Life,' or the 'Destroyer of Death.'

Furthermore, the way Sho Ho's anti-war poem took its effect later on, reflects the way Persephone restored balance in the world after returning from the underworld.

4. Yosano and Atsushi.

chapter 66; Yosano: "It's my fault that those close to me died... Is there some place where it's okay for me to live?"

chapter 8; Atsushi: "If I have any chance of saving them all, of returning them home safely, would that mean it's okay for me to keep on living?"

I couldn't help but think of Dazai and Atsushi back when I was reading through these panels. Ranpo (my beloved), along with Fukuzawa, accepted Yosano as she was, despite how her ability was a cause of despair and misfortune.

Ranpo looked past her mistakes and the entirety of how dark her past was to welcome her into the Armed Detective Agency. Dazai, on the other hand, knew who Atsushi was and what his ability had made him do before anyone else, and still decided to provide a safe place for Atsushi to find his sense of belonging, journeying with him as he learned to use his ability properly.

Atsushi desired to save people to prove his right to live, while Yosano made her wish to achieve the recovery of all her patients the reason for her existence.

Others would prefer to accuse both Yosano and Atsushi of having a saviour complex, but the reason why they pursued to save people with utmost dedication, stems from the nature of what their past was like. You know the saying 'from broken to beautiful?' Yeah, it's something like that.

The way their pasts were written out gave them a desire to change, which was, I daresay, initiated by the people who took them in: Ranpo and Dazai. Their abilities were demonised because of how they were used, but once they broke from their abilities' effect over their lives, they honed their skills to control them for the right cause instead.

In a less cynical point of view, I believe both Yosano and Atsushi stood for what was right, and wanted nothing but to achieve peace and harmony in whatever way they could, even if it meant risking their own lives to save others.

Chapter 10: Truth and illusions (Part 2)

Author notes: and our case begins... I hope you’ll enjoy it...!

It was true that the job of a bodyguard was not unknown to me. In the past, I had had plenty of opportunities to protect corrupted politicians, troubled businessmen and other rich families in contact with the Port Mafia. For the sake of these shady people, I would put my life on the line, often under a fake name, rarely using my real identity. In the close circle of influential families, "Ogawa" was too infamous a name for me to risk exposing myself to them. The family of traders who had lost their lives because of their greed and their incompetence… I recalled I had always been ashamed to wear that name, yet I could not come up with another one. Being an Ogawa… It was still part of my identity, as much as I wanted to deny that fact. I hated being related to the fat and lazy pig who had given birth to me, but his blood did flow in my vessels, and I could never remove it from my body.

Remembering these facts took me less than a second, as I was reminded of my task by Yosano-sensei's questioning glance. I had to introduce myself to the clients, a graceful and elegant lady, mother of a small and shy ten years old boy. A large smile replaced the look of surprise on my face and I bowed before them.

"My name is…" I paused, hesitating "Fuyuno Kasumi, from the Armed Detective Agency. It's an honour to meet you, madam."

"That's… A rather original name… You don't sound as cold as it is, at the very least…" She giggled nervously.

Why, I had to admit that, as poetic as "winter's mist" was, it could be surprising… I would think twice before entrusting my life to someone named as such. Besides, it seemed clear that it was only a pseudonym, which did not make me seem… Trustworthy. Even so, I could not use my real name.

"I am Yosano Akiko, the detective in charge of looking after our newbie." The doctor stepped in to reassure the mother "Everything will be fine."

"Of course, I don't doubt it… My husband did hire you, after all…" She struggled tucking a lock of her hair behind her ear.

"My dove, are you ready?" A masculine voice erupted from their mansion.

A man, carrying various suitcases, suddenly appeared in front of us. I bowed again. It was her husband, Taikin-san, our client. As I straightened my back, however, he rushed toward me and took my hands into his, rather desperately.

"Eirin…? Is that you…?" He whispered.

"W-What…?" I frowned "Let go of me…!"

"Don't you recognise me…? It's me… Eirin…"

I harshly got away from him. What did he want from me…?! And his wife… The poor woman was almost in tears… Seeing as he did not come back to him, I decided to wake him up. I slapped him.

"Stop your nonsense…!" I yelled at him "My name is Fuyuno Kasumi, and I know no 'Eirin'...! Leave me alone…!"

That was a lie. Eirin was the name of my mother, but revealing it would also uncover my true identity. I glared at him, angrily, before apologising to the madam of the house, as sincerely as I could. These people had not married out of love, but even so… Out of respect for her, if he could refrain from that kind of behaviour… Besides, Ogawa Eirin was dead, he was surely aware of that.

"You resemble her so much… These eyes… I really thought she had been brought back. My apologies." He sighed.

"I am not the one you should apologise to." I hissed "I don't know who she was for you, but your wife here doesn't deserve the lamentable husband you are."

"Og —" Yosano-sensei wanted to stop me, but cut herself "Fuyuno…! That's enough…!"

"But sensei…"

"Taikin-san and his wife are our clients…! Don't cause troubles for them…" She groaned "Forgive her, she's quite… Impulsive…"

I huffed discreetly. He did not deserve that I showed him any respect. His family really had to be miserable if all he could think about was a dead married woman, instead of his wife and his son, the happiness he should give his life to protect. These people, who always longed for something they could not have, instead of enjoying what they owned, made me upset. They reminded me too much of my older self…

"Anyway…" The man cleared his throat "About the details of the mission… I'd like you to look after Yumiko-san and my son, Sakunosuke-kun, while I'm away. My trip should last three days."

I felt something wrapping tightly around my heart as I looked at the ten years old boy. They had nothing in common except their name, but even so, I wanted to cry. He was not him, for that person would never come back. However, what kind of fate was that, meeting someone who had, somehow, inherited the name of that lost friend? Slowly, I crouched down and smiled at the boy.

"Are you going to protect me…?" He asked, timidly.

"I promise you, I will. You'll be safe with me." I assured.

These words I had never been able to tell him… They would be destined to so many different people, but I was glad that young Sakunosuke was the first one I said that to, in the world of light. Despite how terrible that first encounter had been, I hoped I would be able to preserve that young life.

"You can rest assured, Taikin-san." I faced the man, unable to look at him without contempt "Your wife and son are in good hands."

what's your opinion on the latest bsd chapter ?

A warning. This is going to be a fairly long opinion post. I have a lot of feels and opinions on it. This is also HUGE in spoilers. 

Chapter Highlights: 1. HOLY SHIT CHUUYA IS BACK AND HE IS THROWING BULLETS. I LOVE HIM SO FUCKING MUCH MY BOYFRIEND. You’re so amazing and beautiful and I fucking LOVE YOU CHUUYA. Being able to fling bullets is so beautiful, even if the science doesn’t exactly back your Ability as much as one would like. You are also the king of entrances. Like baby, they not only gotta catch your hands, but they gotta catch your bullets too. OH WAIT THEY CAN’T, BECAUSE YOU ARE A GOD. 2. The fact that Chuuya and Yosano appeared in the same chapter again under circumstances like those (with the exchange) really backs a ChuuSano headcanon I have (I will speak about that later).3. KuniChuuZai is now an OTP of mine. Like Chuuya looked as though he held so much respect for Kunikida when he saw him? KuniChuu fuel?  And most people know I am also a Soukoku fan and a KunikiDazai fan. If you take my fics as anything. KuniChuuZai has always been a favourite of mine, because in one way, shape, or form, they all come across as compatible. It also is a huge angst party, seeing as Chuuya is Dazai’s past, Kunikida is Dazai’s present, and Chuuya is collectively their enemy. 4. Finally, I am bringing up the exchange once again. I find this super, super fascinating and I can’t wait to know the outcome. I have a few ideas, rest assured, and I will get to them.OVERALL OPINION.I absolutely loved this chapter and everything about it. From Chuuya returning to Kunikida getting his morals bashed by Jouno, essentially, when it comes to saying Tecchou should cut Yosano’s head off, to Kunikida jumping in to sacrifice himself for the entirety of the ADA, even stating that he was well aware it was essentially an act of suicide.I have to hand it to Asagiri, however, about planting Chuuya in as a supposed hero when in actuality Kunikida ended up being the true hero of the chapter, and arguably of the past few chapters. We all have to admit, Kunikida has recently had it very rough. His ideals have never been more evident in the series than the past maybe 10 chapters. It has been challenge after challenge for him, and quite honestly, while I much enjoy conflict in a manga, I do believe he needs a break. And rest assured, to those who read this and maybe got concerned about the turn of events with Kunikida, he is not dead. Asagiri isn’t necessarily the best writer, but he isn’t all about that life. Kunikida would not die in something as mundane as self-sacrifice. And Asagiri would pass up an entire opportunity to put Kunikida into despair if Yosano were lost. Or rather, even this entire situation has already tossed him up in the air. After this event, if Kunikida lives, which he will, he’s going to go through a midlife crisis. 

Remember, just remember, Kunikida has a tendency to blame himself if anything goes wrong on his watch, and Kunikida is the type of person to take the entirety of the blame and be immensely hard on himself. That’s part of his life as someone with strict morals such as his. There is no way Asagiri would kill Kunikida. Especially with Chuuya and Yosano being there, Yosano, if she goes down at the right time (which she could, with Chuuya’s help) she could save herself, Kunikida, and if any damage were done to Chuuya, him too.

The Trade

I believe the trade is of the utmost importance to the plot, in some way, shape or form. I believe that there are three primary choices for who would be chosen (I would assume by the Port Mafia and Mori himself because he would not pass up any chance of no success in this trade by letting the Armed Detective Agency decide) : Yosano Akiko, Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu.

I will provide explanations.Yosano Akiko(Most Likely): Yosano has a very prime Ability, one Mori would most certainly desire. Being able to heal people while on the field would give Mori the upper hand when facing many of his greater enemies, this counts for the Port Mafia by default. She also has acquired the title, “Angel of Death”, despite us having little to no knowledge of what that means. Yosano also has a past with the Military and therefore has some sort of offensive (I’m assuming) experience in combat. Not like Kouyou or Chuuya, but certainly enough to get by. If Yosano’s past with Mori has shown her love for life, it would give a disadvantage for Yosano, because he would know just how desperate Yosano would be to heal individuals. Yosano would have no hesitation, most likely, to go if it meant the Agency would be helped, if only temporarily, and would be loyal if the conditions were met to help the Agency.

Kunikida Doppo(Third Most Likely): This chapter in itself has been a very prevalent example of how Kunikida would sacrifice himself for the good of the Agency. He wouldn’t kill anyone, though, but his selflessness is very much something to note. One thing that makes this a challenge, though, is if his morals are broken, if he isn’t able to save people, will he die? Will he turn out like Oda? Many people make references to how they are similar, and I can see it too. Mafiosi who wouldn’t kill. But, it is to be noted, that Oda broke, and killed. Who is to say that Kunikida won’t do the same if something happens to ruin his ideals? If something causes him to break more than he already has? Kunikida, despite having many emotions, can be ruthless if need be. Another reference to Oda that you could use to justify this would be the fact that Kunikida is very close to Dazai as far as the Agency is concerned. And we all remember what happened when Mori knew how close he was to Oda. If Mori wants to break Dazai back into being with him in the Mafia, Kunikida is arguably the way to go about it. If Mori knew this, he would probably also have plans to eventually get Kunikida to die during a mission after he broke. Kunikida would be Dazai’s second Oda. No one can deny the fact that Kunikida has done some wonders for Dazai, had taught him in the Agency, had taught him how to be a better person. And that is something Oda told him to do. Kunikida helped him be on the side that saves people.

Dazai Osamu(Second Most Likely): Mori has dictated that Dazai’s Mafia Executive position is still available for him should he ever decide to go back. Mori would choose Dazai because Dazai has a mind as similar to his, built to manipulate and control. Of course, Dazai has learned that there is more to life than that, that life is actually slightly worth living. Though, despite probably not belonging in the Mafia anymore, having done too much good, having learned how to be a decent person, when given the opportunity to choose whether or not one should experience a life like that, he would say no. He wouldn’t want someone as idealistic as Kunikida, someone as young and almost naïve as Atsushi, one who cherishes life like Yosano, to experience what life in the Port Mafia would be like. He would most certainly figure that he would be saving a lot more people if he sacrificed himself in this. Dazai wouldn’t admit that the Port Mafia destroyed him, probably destroyed most of his opinion on life. He was empty at that point in his life. He may not want to subject himself to it again, but he would rather do that than let anyone else experience it.HONOURABLE MENTION: ATSUSHI NAKAJIMA: It is entirely possible that Atsushi, with his ability being so strong, that he would be chosen by Mori to join the Mafia. It would be good in terms of plot development, but I also think that Dazai himself wouldn’t allow that. Akutagawa wouldn’t necessarily be fond of the idea either, given how much they ‘hate’ each other. As the main character, it also wouldn’t surprise me if he were chosen to join the mafia because that’s the life of a protagonist.Now, I am going to focus on RELATIONSHIPS:Dazai Osamu and Kunikida Doppo, Dazai Osamu and Nakahara Chuuya, Yosano Akiko and Nakahara Chuuya, and Yosano Akiko and Kunikida Doppo.               

Kunikida Doppo and Dazai Osamu: An important thing to note, is that should Kunikida die at the end of this chapter, what would that do to Dazai? As aforementioned. It would send Dazai into an unspeakable pit. He would be full of despair. Dazai isn’t one to really acknowledge guilt when it comes to him, but I do think it’s plausible for Dazai to feel guilty if something happened to his partner. I think it would send him into a rut because Dazai is aware Kunikida probably trusts him with his fucking life.When it comes to the trade, it takes little to no knowledge of Kunikida to understand that should Dazai ever rejoin the Port Mafia, even in the situation like this, that he would certainly disapprove of it, he would try to convince Dazai not to. Kunikida may not have considerate knowledge (personally I don’t believe anyone other than Oda, Mori, Ranpo, and possibly Ango would) of what royally fucked with Dazai’s life, and what the Mafia had done to him. So, it is a given that Kunikida wouldn’t want to let Dazai back to that. Despite it all, much like Chuuya, Kunikida does care about Dazai and his wellbeing, even if he believes that Dazai’s suicidal antics are a façade. Nakahara Chuuya and Dazai Osamu: Now, Chuuya, he isn’t a given.  We don’t exactly have knowledge about how much Chuuya knows about what the Port Mafia and being a ploy of Mori’s did to Dazai. Of course, Chuuya would have an opinion, but we don’t know what Chuuya knows. It was shown that they knew each other quite well as partners, but that doesn’t mean anything, either. We don’t know if Chuuya was aware. And I am not going to stereotype it and be one of those people who will say that he’d be definitely okay, or definitely not, though I lean more toward not. I think it depends. Regardless, Chuuya has shown genuine care for Dazai’s wellbeing, so basing it on the fact that Dazai fucked up their partnership is not reliable. If Chuuya was aware, even to a small extent, I don’t think Chuuya would be okay with it. I believe that Chuuya would rather Dazai not go back to that state of mind. We don’t know if Chuuya is also aware of how much Dazai has changed, that he has found more of a reason to live, but if he has, he wouldn’t wish the worst on Dazai.Conversely, if Chuuya wasn’t aware, I think it would settle more on Chuuya’s perception of self. I said that I wouldn’t bring their betrayal out in this, but it is undeniable that Chuuya is in some way still hurt. Being over something doesn’t mean you aren’t affected by it, still. Chuuya doesn’t perceive them as partners anymore, that much is for certain. No one could blame him for that. It depends on the person; if you are one of those individuals who thinks that Chuuya can’t live without Dazai, then sure, you can go and say that Chuuya would prefer to have Dazai by his side. I’m one of those people who doesn’t necessarily believe that. Because they’re Soukoku, they get under each other’s skin. That’s what they do. It would be easier to do that when they are together. And Chuuya probably did like that. This one is really iffy. I don’t think he would want Dazai to come back to the Mafia, though. EDIT: My friend brought up an interesting point about the plot of Dead Apple, where it was very evident that Chuuya has a lot of faith in Dazai, like that Dazai wasn’t truly on the side of Shibusawa and Fyodor.

Yosano Akiko and Nakahara Chuuya: Now, I have a lot more to say about that, but I want to focus on the opinion I have on how Chuuya and Yosano met, and it wasn’t in the underground in the Guild Arc. We all know that Yosano has connections with Mori and that she used to work in the military as well. It wouldn’t have shown it, but my personal headcanon is that one time, ONE TIME, Chuuya was healed by Yosano from Corruption’s damage before the Armed Detective Agency was formed, and was sworn to secrecy by Mori, who had probably paid her. At that time, Chuuya had probably been out of it in one way or another and was to leave right before he woke up. Though, I imagine, when she is offered the chance to heal someone, given the fact that she really does treasure life. One thing I do wonder, is did Yosano have control of her Ability before the Agency? She probably did, or else, the “Angel of Death” would have not been employed by the military. If she did not have control, maybe she just healed anyone within her vicinity on the brink of death. But, that is why I doubt it. This chapter could have been a lot of shock to Yosano, seeing Chuuya once again. Yosano doesn’t seem like the type to lie, rather seems very blunt when she opens her mouth, so to withhold information, like the fact that she was hired to save and heal Chuuya, and act as if she doesn’t know him, probably did more numbers on Yosano than she would like to admit. I believe if Chuuya suggested for them to save Kunikida, she would agree and go along with it.

Off topic: The two probably find each other really pretty. They would most definitely be drink buddies and Chuuya would take Yosano out shopping.EDIT: Yosano worked in the military, and Chuuya was ‘made’ and ‘experimented on’ in the Military, presumably during the Ability War. So perhaps there is connection to that in them as well. It is a possibility, and this is only to be noted, that Yosano could also have an artifical Ability like Chuuya? Or something of the sort? That is something we can’t say for certain, though.

Yosano Akiko and Kunikida Doppo: This is my very last topic, but I want to shed some light. Kunikida, Ranpo, and Yosano were the first ones (other than Fukuzawa) to join the agency. Yosano kind of views Kunikida as her little brother. She most certainly wants to protect Kunikida no matter the cost, and I think that is going to put her in a situation that could get her killed. I also think that between the two of them (Dad and Mom of the Agency), they would try to prevent any other member of the Agency younger than them, say, Atsushi, Tanizaki, Kyouka, or Kenji from being subjected to the life of the Port Mafia. Yosano and Kunikida are shown to be quite close as well, and they look after each other. They also have familiar morals, so that means they could work well together, and probably would for the sake of the Agency. They also have close bonds with Ranpo. All three of them, but namely Yosano and Kunikida, care most about the success of the Agency.

[May, current year]

Evening is fast approaching, its ominous pointed shadows reaching for the riverside right next to a lively street. Its mechanical and beeping sounds get relentlessly drowned out by the curtain of rain that is keeping the girl waiting under a broad bridge, but rather than a jarring mix of discordant noises, it sounds like an elegant harmony that catches her attention and renews itself, not boring at all. Besides, it distracts her from the wait.

A prickly, bubbly, anachronistic energy wells up inside her body at every innocuous detail that reminds her of whom she’s waiting for, and it feels to close to fear to be joy, too close to joy to be fear. Like a teenager waiting for a fantasy that she only dared entertain as a secret of her heart to come true.

And what can she do besides stomaching it, because that’s the only thing to do to keep living, the only way the show can truly go on. So she stomachs it, and bits her lips with an anxious and mature passion, a raindrop rolling down her warm, grinning face. She’s beautiful, and knows this, because… Well, it’s raining. Everything is so damn beautiful under the rain.

“Yosano”, his voice gets to her, loud and somewhat uncertain. She turns to Motojirou, a wry smile on her face, feeling at the same time like the silent director and main instrument of an orchestra. His lab coat hangs from his shoulders, completely damp with rain and in no way useful anymore. His hair is also soaked, and it makes him look like he just jumped out of a swimming pool. Yosano would lie if she declared not to find it even the slightest bit amusing. Lies do not suit a woman like her.

“Don’t tell me you walked all the way here”, she scoffs. “Please.”

“Isn’t it obvious? The trains are out of service.” Motojirou scratches a spot behind his ear where his hair - in a dry condition, see - never quite lies like he wants it to. It’s not exactly a secret, but not even something a very observant passerby would catch, which is why Yosano prides herself in her ability to archive this unnecessary information in the tidy folder of her mind which reads Motojirou. The transition from unflattering labels, associated with his peculiar occupation, happened slowly, probably in spring.

The exact occasion, she doesn’t remember. And she isn’t interested in doing so, as long as Motojirou looks at her with raw admiration setting his gaze ablaze, only when she’s near,and the pride of a moth that fights and struggles not to get alienated by the devouring flame of embarrassment. Slightly speckled with fear, of getting overshadowed, or abandoned.

She wants to reach out and plant a kiss on the cold planes of his cheeks, smooth like a water-streaked glass and lightened by a healthy complexion. But she’s not sure of what would happen.

Tomorrow, I will tell him tomorrow.

It’s a wednesday. Yosano strolls into the Agency with her habitual pace, the bottom of her heels hitting the floor with a quick, light-hearted cadency. She looks like she just won the lottery, is the thought crossing her coworkes’ mind. Well, maybe not quite as excited; if anything, she looks like she found a penny on the sidewalk on her way here, or like a kid looked over her shoulder as she passed each other and whispered the word “pretty”.

If only Yosano could always be so… radiant.

“I’m tired”, Ranpo complains, chewing listlessly on a potato chip. “The President sent me on a job so early. It’s the third time this month.”

Yosano places her briefcase on her working desk. “The third one already.” She wonders, quite distractedly. She’s in a good mood, and effortlessly slips into her routine, compiling the first stack of papers with ease. She notices Kyouka reading a book out of the corner of her eye. “New shoes, Kyouka?”

The little girl looks up with a strange dullness in her gaze. She seems to be pondering the answer; but finally, her mouth takes the shape of a thin, pale line. “Yes.”

The doctor observes her face for a moment, then smiles. “They suit you.”

Kyouka’s face relaxes only a little.

[May, current year]

Yosano has to wait a few seconds for a reply. The line buzzes, hesitant, and the office is quiet since everyone went home already, almost making her self-aware of the sound of her breathing and the cat-shaped clock’s ticking. Soon they’re in synchrony, and she doesn’t even do it on purpose.

“I… I can’t come to the bridge tonight.”

She knits her brows, staring with puzzlement at the road below, from a window on the top floor of the Agency’s building. “Well, it was nice of you to tell me beforehand.”

“Something cape up at work”, Motojirou sounds exasperated, and a little desperate if Yosano can read between the lines. She doesn’t want to think badly of him. “It’s okay.”

“No. Really. I would come if I could make arrangements.”.

“I said, it’s fine. My work makes me busy too. It could have happened to both of us.”

He huffs into the phone, and Yosano leans away from it slightly. She doubts it’s his own phone; he probably forgot his in some public place and asked to call her from a colleague’s. He doesn’t seem to understand the concept of amplified sound , and this says a lot about how he sees the world and takes other people into consideration. In a way, he only ever sees himself reflected in the mirror. In another, his vision is what Yosano would describe as disarmingly realistic. If, months ago, she could imagine that they could get entwined in such a close friendship after meeting in bellicose circumstances, she wouldn’t have known how to trust a person like him. Now, she thinks she understands a little better, and yet still eyes the last step with a apprehensive sense of wonder. “I’m sorry, Akiko.”

She makes to answer, but the words remain stuck in her throat.

I’ll tell him tomorrow.

When Yosano opens her eyes, she instantly feels that something’s off. Her home is warm. The heater must be on. Or maybe, she thinks after some debate, maybe it’s just her body temperature. She has slept wrapped in a heap of blankets, after all. She isn’t sure what it means; spring in about to end, and she doesn’t feel sick at all. Her face is fresh like a rose.

A glass of water stands on the bedside table. Next to it, a leather bound notebook.

She gets out of bed instinctively, taking in a careful breath as she surveys her surroundings. She didn’t turn on the heater the night before, and the nightgown she’s wearing is the one she only takes out of the wardrobe in winter.

The thing is, summer hasn’t even started yet.

The whole circumstance is very confusing, before she looks out of the window, and she feels utterly lost.

It’s snow.

The notebook on the table is a journal. She thumbs through the pages, which don’t make any sense to her. The last page reads just a few sentences, but they’re overall less incomprehensible than the whole book; and Yosano knows that she wrote them herself.

Don’t panic. It’s okay.

Call Kajii. If he doesn’t answer, call The President.

She only notices that her hands are shaking like before her first surgery when she grabs the phone, conveniently placed next to the glass of water.

He picks up after the first ring. “Yes?”

“What does this mean?” She asks, her voice too calm and tight to be natural. “I found a journal. It’s… It’s snowing, Motojirou. What’s going on?”

“I… Huh… I’ll be there in a moment.”

“Tell me–” The line goes still before Yosano can finish, and she closes her eyes.

Motojirou looks like he told this story too many times.

“All right. It was on a subway train. The accident, that is. Believe me when I say I know what it’s like, but what I regret the most is… not being there with you. You were on that subway train. Now, it’s only a matter of seconds if you didn’t die, and hell, you were close…”

“Motojirou.”

“… But no, you only hit your head in the wrong place. And at the hospital, some guys were saying that you could experience various degrees of memory loss… When you woke up, you remembered everything that happened until May 28. But of the day of the accident, nothing. And the day after, still nothing. It’s like your mind is unable to create new memories since May 29.” He draws in a breath, as if to steady himself. “There is more. We got together, that day. You… You never remember that.”

A silence falls between them. Yosano’s fingers slowly massage her temples, the milky morning rays fall on her face like moondust.

That night, Motojirou helps her rebuild the events that occurred in the past months. The times he has had to tell her the whole story all over again are periodic; he stopped keeping count. To avoid making her relive the trauma, they just wait for the days she finds out on her own. She’s still keeping her job as a doctor, helping people under the considerate and understanding wing of the Agency. She wonders if she’s still herself after all, but frankly, giving herself simple, concise answers has always been a remarkable personality trait, which are hard to get rid of. Yosano writes a few more things on the journal. Some pages read, I’ll tell him tomorrow, I’ll tell him that I want us to be more, and they’re the saddest ones. So she writesbabout what she’s thinking, but not necessarily what she’s feeling. She won’t need the journal for that.

They go out in the streets, huddled close together under the blanket Motojirou’s brought. The only detail Yosano can focus on in the strange, cold air loaded with expectation, is his nonchalant touch. It keeps her warm. After a while, the fireworks start, and as the explosions ignite the sky over their heads, over the buildings, over the skyscrapers, Yosano feels Motojirou’s restrained gaze on her. It all clicks in that exact moment.

And perhaps there’s no tomorrow, not for her. The present means Motojirou’s fingers grazing her shoulder, and all the sadness not quite hidden there, the space between them burning out, and the smile he flashes at her when Yosano meets his eyes. If that’s so, and this is the only day she’s going to live for the rest of forever, there’s no beat of hesitance when she leans into him and presses her lips on his.

It feels a little like keeping a promise, a little like making a new one.

She walks into the Agency with her briefcase in one hand and her car keys in the other, the usual greetings welcome her. Ranpo complaining about some absurdly early job, Atsushi mitigating a quarrel between his seniors, Kyouka calmly studying a map of the city.

“New shoes, Kyouka?”

The girl blinks a few times, looks up. Her dark orbs observe Yosano’s smiling face, almost unresponsive. “Yes”, says Kyouka. “Thanks for noticing, Yosano-san.”

If only Yosano could always be so radiant.

The red, bleeding sun rays seeps into the river, turning the water a bright color that complements the sky, and the woman who’s waiting under a broad bridge is amused by the color scheme, which perhaps also suits her a little. The trees are in bloom. It is not unusual for this time of the year, but she’s taken aback by the sheer quantity of flowers. They’re tinged a faint sunset-red.

“Yosano?” Motojirou sounds different from usual, more confident, except that’s not the word she’s looking for. He sounds like she knows her better, and he only said her name.

“Don’t tell me you walked all the way here”, she lets out a winded chuckle, staring at him, as a shard of sunlight is still gleaming in her playful irises. “Please.”

“No, I took the subway”, Motojirou corrects her. “Do you even know how far from here my Headquarters are?”

“Vaguely.”

It’s a wednesday evening, the streetlights form ponds of light at their feet and Motojirou looks at her smiling. A pleasant electricity makes Yosano’s spine shiver.

Tomorrow. I will tell him, tomorrow.

Becoming self-aware

🩺 Akiko Yosano was a calm and intelligent woman. Yes, she can be sadistic, she knew that, but she was a good person.

🩺 When Yosano became self-aware, she was furious. Yosano didn't care that she couldn't remember her parents. She was furious, that she remembered something from her past.

🩺 She wasn't real?! If she wasn't real, why she remembered The Great War?! Why she remembered treating people during The Great War?! Was The Great War real?! Was her work alongside Mori real?

🩺 Why she was forced to treat solders when she was eleven?

🩺 Yosano stormed away from the office. Tanizaki siblings find her only on the next day. Yosano almost destroyed a warehouse where she met Atsushi for the first time.

🩺 Tanizaki siblings managed to bring Yosano back to the office.

🩺 And then she felt the entity's presence.

Yosano was ready to destroy the entity. She doesn't care, who it was. She felt that this thing is responsible for the current madness. 

For the last few days, all ADA members were staying in the office. The situation was so bizarre. They don't want to be left alone.

Yosano can't see her friends' conditions. 

Kunikida looked like a husk of his former self. Carefree Dazai looked dangerous. Atsushi looked lost. Fukuzawa-sensei tried to stay strong, but Yosano can see, that present seems almost broken.

The entity was the reason they were suffering. And the entity was a coward. It never showed itself. If Yosano met it, she would tear it apart.

And then time resets.

And Yosano was once again in the warehouse, where Dazai proclaim he wants to make Atsushi a part of ADA. Both Dazai and Atsushi looked peaceful.

When they start feeling your presence

🩺 Because if she could, she would eliminate you.

🩺 Yosano was sure, that you are a demiurge. An evil human-child. Were their lives entertaining for you that you reset time?

🩺 At the day when Black Lizards attack ADA office, Yosano was ruthless. Thankfully, she didn't kill anyone. Then she heard a voice.

"Yes, Queen, slay! [||||||||||||] cool! And she [||||||||||] style!"

🩺 Yosano felt, like she was cuddling with a bunch of kittens who adored her. Was it entity's feelings? That pure? Yosano was confused. If the entity was evil, why its feelings were that genuine?

🩺 Everyone could see Yosano's anger. Some were silent. But two people weren't.

🩺 Atsushi was first, who talked to Yosano. He told her about the entity been kind and sympathetic towards him.

🩺 Then there was Dazai. He, once again, was carefree. Dazai assures Yosano, that she will see the truth. That there is some hope.

🩺 Then, few days after her talk with Atsushi and Dazai, she saw, that Kunikida, again, looked as strong as he was before.

🩺 Kunikida looked delightful. He told everyone about entity, thanking him for showing them an importance of making plans.

🩺 Yosano's anger lessen. Atsushi, Dazai and Kunikida looked normal, not brainwashed. Maybe, there is something more to that strange entity?

🩺 It was a day when she took Atsushi for a shopping trip. The day, when they met Kyoka.

Yosano heard cheering.

"Doctor Yosano, I think you are the good doctor. But, most importantly, you are a good person. ADA is so lucky to have you as their friend. And as their doctor."

Yosano feel, like someone touched her hair.

🩺 The same day, Yosano's anger disappeared. Because of Ranpo.

"I finished the investigation. It seems, that our entity is a simple human. Like we are. They don't have ability. There are no abilities in their world. And they have no idea, that we can hear them."

🩺 Yosano couldn't be angry at you anymore. The whole situation wasn't your fault. Yosano wishes, she can say that she is sorry for hating you. Yosano thought that if you met face to face, she will take you for a shopping trip.

🩺 And then Mori Ougai and Yukichi Fukuzawa met. The union was formed. All of them were trying to find a way out of this world. Find a way to you.

🩺 Yosano and Mori had a heated argument. They wanted to decide, who will be your doctor. No one wanted to back off.

🩺 Ivan Goncharov was the one who ended the argument. He offered Fyodor Dostoevsky to become your surgeon. Yosano and Mori formed a truce and agreed to look after your health together.

And then, one day, the purple moon shined above Yokohama.

🩺 Yosano take her job as your doctor seriously. Even in game.

🩺 All Yosano's cards now can heal. Even if all their skills are set on dealing damage.

🩺 When BSD gang gain access to the rest of your phone, Yosano take it upon herself to remind you about your health.

🩺 Now your phone remind you to take a rest from computer, to take a nap, drink water, go for a walk.

🩺 And if you need to take medication, your phone (Yosano) will remind you about it.

🩺 If you buy something online, Yosano will "accompany" you.

🩺 Yosano can't wait for the day when you meet. She and others will protect you. Because, for them, you were Their Guiding Light.

Two notifications pop up. One is the reminder to take your pills. Second is from BSD Maoi game. You got a present from Yosano. Third of your notes from characters.

"[Y/N], I hope you are doing well. Remember, you are a good person. Please, take care of yourself. Akiko Yosano"

There was a cute stamp with Yosano attached to the note.

Your smile was weak. But, as with Kunikida and Atsushi before, you select Yosano's card and pet Yosano's chibi sprite.

"Thanks for your concern, Yosano. And for the kind words."

You were too tired to notice that sprite's eyes became warmer.

Self-Aware BSD. World Building. Getting into their world. Part I

Was thinking about writing this installment ever since I published this post.

Important part of my AU - (most of the) characters don't like Reader at first. Some of them hate Reader, some of them were scared of them, some of the characters doesn't care about Reader etc.

So, what would happen, if Guiding Light got into BSD world before characters start liking them?

Part I

When Reader were transported:

Before Characters gain self-awareness

After characters gain self-awareness but before they start feeling their gaze

After characters start feeling their gaze but before time reset

Warning: OOC. Slight spoilers for LN, Anime and Manga, some characters are dangerous to Reader. English is my second language

If Reader got into BSD World before Characters gain self-awareness

🐾 Terrible moment to be transported. World, full of faceless figures. World, where characters resemble a moving 3D models, that won't react to you, no matter, what you do. If you are strong enough, you will hold yourself together, until Atsushi gains his self-awareness.

Level of danger: 1/10. Hard for mental health, but no one will attack you.

What's good in your situation:

You have a chance to explore Yokohama.

No problems with supplies.

Characters, when they gain self-awareness, will be friendlier to you. They won't associate you with heavy gaze in the sky.

What's bad in your situation:

You might wait for a long time, before characters gain self-awarenes. Depends, on how close to Cannibalism arc you were isekaied.

If Reader got into BSD World after characters gain self-awareness but before they start feeling their gaze

🐾 Tricky one. You can pretend to be a Character, who got self-awareness, but, the chances, that characters will believe you for long are slim. No one saw you before, so, what kind of characters are you, if you have no interaction with any of them? Better tell them the truth about been from the real world.

🐾 Characters are on their guard around you. They aren't sure, if they can trust you.

🐾 While you aren't a Gaze from the sky (for now), you still a person, who knew their secrets.

Tips for interaction:

1. Don't treat them like characters. Don't joke about Chuuya's height, Dazai's suicidal tendencies, Jounou's eyes etc.

2. Never mentioned their likes, dislikes or past. They won't like to be reminded about the fact, that thousands of strangers knew their secrets.

Level of dangers: Depends on Organization you try to stay with.

Armed Detective Agency: 1/10

Ranpo immediately prove your 'innocence'. Yes, you didn't have any idea that they are self-aware. Yes, you didn't know, how did you get there.

Still, ADA will keep an eye on you. Still, will let you go for walks (with at least one of them accompanying you).

Atsushi Nakajima - On his guard, but won't be too unfriendly. Will hurt you only if you attack someone.

Doppo Kunikida - Man is broken by the fact he is not real. You might try to talk to him, he won't be rude to you, but Katai, Yosano, Fukuzawa and Dazai won't let you got too close to him.

Akiko Yosano - Furious about the fact, that she.is a fictional character. Will look after everything you do. It will take her a long time to open up to you. Won't put you in any kind of danger, tho, and, if you got injured, will treat your wounds.

Junchirou Tanizaki - More concerned about his sister. Neutral towards you at that point. Will destroy you, if you make Naomi cry.

Naomi Tanizaki - Neutral and friendly at the same time. Can feel, that you aren't bad person. Don't be rude to Junchirou.

Kirako Haruno - Don't have any bad feelings towards you. Knew, that you are a simple person, who won't hurt anyone.

Katai Tayama - Buried in work. Protective over Kunikida, don't want you near him.

Kenji Miyazawa - sunshine boy. Will be very friendly and polite. Of course, if you didn't do anything bad to his friends.

Kyouka Izumi - Don't trust you. Ready to strike you, if you give her a reason.

Ranpo Edogawa - pretty chill about you. Knew, that you are a simple person and have no chance against them.

Yukichi Fukuzawa - Insist on you to be near him, so he can stop you, if you became a threat. Still, very respectful towards you.

Dazai Osamu - Hard to read. Will always observe you. Don't give him any reason to suspect you.

In conclusion: Not bad to stay with them. They might not trust you fully, but they won't mistreat you or hurt you.

Port Mafia: 5/10

You will be a semi-prisoner for them. Won't keep you in cell, but you can't leave HQ.

Will question you about your world, how you get in their world, etc.

Not very friendly towards you. Treat you with cold, distant respect.

Ougai Mori - Respectful towards you. Won't let any sort of disrespect from you. You can ask him if you need anything, he will make sure, that you aren't harmed.

Elise - Neutral and friendly towards you. Can ask you to play with her. Tried to ask you to prank Mori with her. Don't do it, Mori won't be that forgiving.

Chuuya Nakahara - Neutral and unfriendly towards you. Due to his past, don't like people who try to use him. For him, been a fictional character mean that you might see him as a source of entertainment. Still, won't be that hard on you. Just try not to bother him without reason.

Kouyou Ozaki - Doesn't care about you. She is more concerned about Kyouka. Don't badmouth Kyouka in her presence.

John Steinbeck - Openly rude towards you. He is missing his family, and think, that you are the reason they disappear. Keep your distance.

Lucy Maud Montgomery - while she doesn't like the fact, that, her past was written as tragic, probably for someone else entertainment, she is friendly towards you. Like to chat with you.

Louisa May Alcott - another one who is shy near you. With time, will open up to you.

Margaret Mitchell - Very cold towards you. Miss her family. Keep your distance.

Mark Twain - friendly one. Doesn't treat you seriously. Doesn't treat anything seriously.

Nathaniel Hawthorne - very dangerous, doesn't matter, if he is under Fyodor's influence or not. See you as a threat to Mitchell.

In conclusion: Come to them only if they are your only option. You have three people who are openly hostile towards you. It's unlikely, that they will hurt you, but, staying with three rude people can take a toil at your mood.

In conclusion: Don't bother to stay with them. But, they are a good way to find Fyodor.

Fukuchi Ouchi - Think that you are the reason that his plans were destroyed. May seriously hurt you, if he realises, that you are the Reader.

Bram Stoker - Doesn't care about you. You may talk with him about your world, but be careful. Fukuchi won't like it, if he finds out that you are talking with Bram.

Fyodor Dostoevsky - try to make him see you as a valuable source of information. Don't try to give him garbage information. As long as you are valuable, Fyodor will protect you from Fukuchi and Gogol.

Nikolai Gogol - unpredictable. One moment he is trying to be as close to you as he can, next moment planing your murder. Be respectful, don't try to disagree with his opinion. Try to run into his as rare as you can.

Sigma - neutral and worried about you. Won't be rude, but it will take time to convince him that you don't want to use him.

In conclusion: Sigma and Fyodor are the safest option among DOA. Still, DOA is the most dangerous organization to stay with. If you really have to stay with DOA, better search for Fyodor through Rats.

The Guild: 5/10. Steinbeck, Mitchell and Hawthorne are more hostile, but won't try to do anything drastic.

Rats in the House of the Dead: 0/10 or 8/10. As I mentioned, Fyodor Dostoevsky is the one who plays the music during this party. No difference.

Decay of the Angel: 8/10 or 10/10. Fyodor will be the only one who is willing to interact with you. Sigma is afraid of you, Gogol's feelings are complicated, Fukuchi hates you. Will try to imprison you. Still, won't try to search for you. Just stay away.

Hunting Dogs: 3/10. Fukuchi will try to convince others that you aren't human. He won't sucseed, but Hunting Dogs will more careful.

Government and Others: 2/10. Another group, who will be cautious because of possibility of you not been a human. Still, nothing dangerous to your health.

In conclusion: Hard time to be transported into BSD World. Still, not to the point of been terrified.

When they start working together to try to find the way to your world, they heard it.

The Monster.

It pretended to be human. To be your father's friend.

Its words were so sweet.

It tricked your parents. They believed the monster.

And let it stay with you all alone.

They heard what It has done to you.

When they have no way to help you.

They feel hatred. They wanted to slay the beast that dared to touch you. To make you cry. To do this to you.

They are disgusted by themselves. Because they couldn't save you.

The monster was captured.

And then they learned, that a baby was growing inside your womb.

But happiness was short-lived.

And then they learned, that The Monster has been set free.
