Fast Charlie (15): Pierce Brosnan and Morena Baccarin? #Punching!
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of Fast Charlie on #PrimeVideo. #FastCharlie. Run of the mill story but chemistry with Brosnan and Morena Baccain. 3/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Fast Charlie” (2024). “Fast Charlie”, streaming on Prime Video, attracted me for two reasons*. Firstly, however dire some of his film choices have been, I do like watching Pierce Brosnan on the screen. Secondly, this one was directed by the veteren film director Phillip Noyce who led two of my favourite thrillers of all time: “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present…

imagine this: love as self-destruction.
is emotional self-harm a thing? because sometimes that’s what i think i was doing when it all went down.
at the time, i was so depressed, so full of self-loathing. i didn’t want to die, not quite, but i wanted to self-destruct.
i knew doing that shit with him was gonna traumatize me, but i didn’t care. i not only didn’t care, i actively craved it. i WANTED it to hurt me. i WANTED to be ruined.
i knew exactly how much it was gonna leave me bleeding, tear me apart, turn the knife inside me, etc…i knew and yet i did it anyways.
the truth is, i wasn’t stupid. i wasn’t even naïve. i just hated myself.
sometimes i really do wonder if that’s any better. i don’t think it is.

"Only 12 Voice Actors"
The "only 12 voice actors" thing in anti-dub circles is frustrating because I've seen animation that only had a limited amount of actors to spread across multiple character. And a lot of them are damn impressive with all that they've had to work with.
Monsuno only had Cam Clarke, Chris Corey Smith, Karen Straussman, Kirk Thorton and Keith Silverstein. Each played one of the five man band protagonist group but also had to play many of the characters either reoccurring or one-offs.
Code Lyoko, a childhood favorite, only had nine voice actors to spread across the show. Aelita and Jeremie, the main couple were both played by Sharon Mann. David Gasman played William and Jim among many other supporting or one-off cast members.
But going back to Anime, it's actually exceedingly rare these days for any dub to have two characters share the exact same voice actors. You only get double casting when it's with maaaaaaybe a random extra but even then, there's additional voice credits for other VAs.
Hell, it's surprising given how dubs aren't known for going for high paying rates. If they wanted to cheap out, they could legit go with a limited amount just for main roles. Yet each character has one voice actor these days.
Buuuuuuut the anti-dub crowd doesn't know about this because it would run against their viewpoint of what they hate passionately. Like... the fact that they think that it's only FUNimation and that they have a "clique" of select voice actors is amazing.
Like... maybe a lot of voice actors get a lot of roles across these dubs because they are good at their jobs. Additionally... it is their job to get a role that can pay period. If they don't voice act, they're not doing their job. Which is to voice act. Ah, doy!

Can I talk about something kinda off the wall for me?
Like I know I mostly talk about Seven Deadly Sins these days, I'm all about analyzing those Fairies. And every so often there's some Kingdom Hearts sprinkled in.
But another thing that I've always really liked is Code Lyoko.
And there's one thing about that show that just really pisses me off. And this is another reason it's a deviation from my usual sort of posts, I almost always talk in universe. I talk about characters and canon and rarely ever meta things like the creators and voice actors as people. This is not an in universe problem.
See, I'm really sensitive to voices. I can always catch when one character sounds like another from something else and I kinda pride myself on picking that up. That reason that's troublesome with Code Lyoko is because of two of the main cast share a VA.
The character Jeremy Belpois is voiced by Sharon Mann. And in the first season she does a sort of stereotypical voice for him, it's nerdy, he sounds a little congested, that sort of thing. And it's good. I think it's good, I like that voice for him, it suits him. But she changed it later. She wanted to shift away from the stereotype so she dropped the congested sound and his voice comes out a little higher pitched.
Why is this a big problem? It's not just cuz I liked the first one better. There's a real reason and that reason is
Aelita.
See Sharon Mann also voices Aelita, and when she changed Jeremy's voice it made the two sound way too similar. Which is very annoying because the two are romantic interests and frequently speak to each other. Sometimes half the freaking episode is them talking to each other! They need to sound different!

THE CARTER FAMILY :
margaret elizabeth "peggy" carter-jones ( helen mirren ) - a french resistance fighter turned spy during world war ii, peggy's name is largely the reason that the carter name is so well known throughout the espionage and political world. in short, sharon's idol. peggy marries gabe jones in the 60s, and together, they have one daughter. after gabe's death in the nineties, peggy moves to the united states to be closer to her remaining family. she dies in one of the nicest nursing homes in america when sharon is in her mid thirties.
harrison john carter ( terrence mann ) - sharon's father, and peggy's brother. he moves from france to the united states upon meeting his wife, amanda nolan, at a state function. a corporate attorney, terrence was shrewd, cold and calculating. he was in his mid fifties when sharon was born, and dies shortly after her twentieth birthday.
amanda teresa carter, nee nolan ( patricia clarkson ) - sharon's mother, harrison's wife, and peggy's sister-in-law. amanda was the daughter of the american ambassador to france. she was twenty five when she met harrison at a state event, and thirty when they got married. they had two daughters, julia and sharon. following the death of her husband, amanda would later go on to teach french part time at a local college until her death when sharon was in her late twenties.
sharon elizabeth carter ( vanessa kirby ) - sharon was born to harrison and amanda in their mid fifties and mid forties, respectively. she was a surprise, a sort of "i didn't know we could still have kids" child, and it showed. it's not that she wasn't loved, but her parents were already tired from raising another child, and it showed. often left to her own devices, sharon was particularly close with peggy, but would later struggle to separate her accomplishments as a shield agent from peggy's accomplishments as a decorated veteran and spy. upon graduating with a degree in psychology from yale, sharon attended shield university and went on to become one of their most well-respected agent.
gabriel william jones ( joe morton ) - a veteran of world war ii and former howling commando, gabe jones was one of the first soldiers in history to serve alongside captain america. after completing his service, gabe would go on to stay behind in france with peggy. he would die of complications related to a heart attack when sharon was eight years old.
julia rachel carter ( katherine heigl ) - sister to sharon, daughter of harrison and amanda. julia is the eldest of the carter daughters, and was both planned and generally liked better by their parents. she's relatively mild-mannered, except where it comes to her five year old child, kayla hanson-carter. she did her law degree at yale, and currently serves as an assistant attorney general for the department of justice in the criminal justice division.
camille manon jones ( thandiwe newton ) - the daughter of peggy and gabe, camille has a phd in political science from cambridge, and currently serves as a lecturer in paris.

Granted I watched Xana Awakens and then stumbled and fell down a fanfic rabbit hole from which I am only now escaping (by the way, Carthago Delenda Est: great Lyoko fic, I predict it will fully merge with my recollection of Chronicles to the point they become indistinguishable in my memory) and so I’m still keeping an ear out for it, but it has been 15 years and I still listen to Jeremie and Aelita interact and cannot wrap my brain around how Sharon Mann made her voice do that.
