I think it’s a bit humorous that the High Table is stuck in the past with it’s traditions and all but it’s members/emissaries are all focused on the future. Both Adjudicator and Marquis are obsessed with the idea of the future, Adjudicator with the future of the High Table and Marquis with a legacy he can leave on the world; Vincent’s is more severe with it being used against him by Winston. Both Gianna and Santino D’Antonio’s ambitions and their ascension into a High Table seat, with their brutality and ruthlessness eventually leads to their demise.

And then there’s John, he starts off by being locked into the past but never the future. Grief held him back throughout the movies, along with the memories of people in his past when he went by the name of “Baba Yaga” . It’s used many times against him such as when Viggo mockingly calls him by that name after destroying the church. At first, memories of the past bother John but as the movies progress, he starts to break free from that sort of cage he’s been mentally locked into by the entire world.

When Vincent mocks him at the agreements scene, John doesn’t even budge. He’s grown and it’s clear. It’s clear to the audience that things like that aren’t bothering him anymore.

The High Table is locked in the past, strictly upholding traditions that were made hundreds of years before any of the current seat holders were even ever born. The emissaries only see the future, what the future can bring them and what legacy they or their ambitions can leave behind. But John and those under the Table, are in the present.
