Quote from the beginning of the Skinner Demon mission with some notes of things I need to remember. Warning for brief description of graphic violence and background character deaths.

"The file described the location, a small city several tens of kilometers away from Cang Qiong Mountain Sect. Recently a numbers f murders gad occurred within it. Already nine people were dead.

Every victim shared a common fate: the skin on their body had been completely, meticulously peeled off from head to toe and with perfect precision, as if the skin had never been attached to the deceased body at all. It was enough to horrify anyone. Therefore, the murderer had come to be known as the "Skinner Demon."

The Skinner Demon's chosen victims were all young, beautiful women. Therefore, in Shuang Hu City, every family with daughters, wives, or concubines shut and locked their doors the moment night fell. Despite this, they had been unable to stop the Skinner Demon from coming and going as it pleased.

A succession of nine horrible deaths, yet the officials had no idea what to do. The city's people were in a state of panic. There were even rumors that it was the work of a ghost - otherwise, how could the culprit come and go without a trace?!

Several influential families had met together and at last decided to send someone to Cang Qiong Mountain Sect to plead for assistance from the Immortal cultivators.

Shen Qingqiu had already read this information multiple times. But no matter how many times he read it, it wasn't the least bit helpful.

The hell is a Skinner Demon?! Never heard of it! Is this a newly added plotline or a hidden one?! Is it dangerous?! Is it strong?! Am I even going to be able to deal with it?! This isn't what we agreed to!"

Notes to remember:

Nine known victims. The locals think it's probably a ghost. The information about the murders is semi-public.

'Skinner Demon' is a title given by the locals and not a known demon type. At least not in the Human Realm. Shen Yuan has never heard of them. They never appeared in PIDW to his memory.

Several influential families send for Cang Qiong, rather than local government officials, although in this case, they're probably the same thing.

Tension could probably be upped on Shuang Hu City by including details like a curfew, checkpoints of guards with demon detecting equipment, people selling charms (including fake ones) to protect against ghosts, and visible protection talismans and other security measures. Really show in a story that the city is on high-alert.

If people are selling counterfeit charms to protect against the murder ghost, then Ning Yingying could buy one for Binghe to make up for the recent loss of his mother's jade pendant, which would not make Binghe feel better. Or someone could try to sell Binghe one of these obvious fakes and Binghe could take offense.

i think the gameplay systems are cool and there hasnt been an individual room so far that wasnt theoretically fun taken on its own merits but after you leave the village it disintegrates into this slop of challenge room after challenge room it starts to feel like doom 2 after a while

#its very clear to see how dark souls completely took its core concept and game design philosophy from thsi game #as well as um. some things that were maybe a little bit copywritten #but dark souls ties it all together in a way that feels like youre progressing it puts extreme emphasis on orientation #whereas once you get inside the castle in re4 you really just feel like a rat in a maze and even the village is pretty disjointed #juts because its pretty obvious their solution to years and years of catastrophic development issue #was to chop the game up into a bunch of completely isolated rooms that you can basically loud into and out of in any order for any reason #and its a very good mercenary style of Getting Game Done and maybe if i was a little more dry in my tastes #id really really really like it like moreso even than games specifically trying to go for cohesion #and its not that doing the challenges in the rooms isnt fun or that gameplay systems dont work so muhc as it is that #you can kinda feel the skinner box a little too easily #at least by 2022 standards

I've seen sometimes people arguing that Shen Yuan as Shen Qingqiu is constantly performing, faking his personality, and therefore Luo Binghe fell for someone who doesn't actually exist.

And fortunately that is wrong.

Shen Qingqiu has to act like an aloof immortal to keep his image, but he hasn't acted anything remotely like og!Shen Qingqiu since the skinner incident. And even with the OOC locks on, he kept losing points for acting OOC.

So, he's not acting as Shen Jiu, he behaves in a way he thinks an immortal cultivator should, which is basically himself but more calm, with Shen Jiu's muscle memory helping him to keep a blank face.

The thing is, that's how most people act. If you're as thin faced as he is, as easily embarrassed you tend to avoid embarrassing situations, refrain yourself from saying embarrassing things, constantly trying to pretend you aren't embarrassed at all.

His internal monologue is different to what he shows, but that's how it works for most people. Put yourself in a situation in which a friend asks you about something you absolutely don't care about, you think inside your head something along the lines of: " I don't caaaare" "I don't give a shit" "THIS AGAIN. WHY. I DON'T CARE I DON'T CARE." etc, and depending on your personality you might answer differently. If you're blunt you'd say something like "Couldn't care less", if you're cruel you'd say "Nobody gives a shit" if you're kind you'd consider what they asked and answer even though you don't care, if you're assertive you'd answer and also say something like "please don't ask about it again" and that's without taking into consideration how much you care about said friend, how you behave with this person in particular.

Shen Qingqiu, would say to Shang Qinghua. "I don't give a shit," he feels comfortable enough to be crass and doesn't care much about his opinion of him, to Liu Qingge he'd say something like "Liu-shidi really focuses on the strangest things" doesn't want to hurt his feelings, but feels comfortable enough to hint that he doesn't care about it. To Ning YingYing he'd answer and then change subjects, cares enough to not hurt her but doesn't feel comfortable enough to show he doesn't care about whatever she said. To Luo Binghe, he'd take the time to answer and then add something like "This master really doesn't care about such things" because he doesn't want to hurt Binghe, but he is comfortable enough to confess how he really feels about it, he answers and then kindly informs him about his feelings on the subject.

That's not faking, that's something everybody does.

Shen Qingqiu doesn't lie more than the average person (who has a nightmare AI clinging to their soul) to others, but does constantly lie to himself (even though when you read you can tell he's aware of the truth, but actively convinces himself that it can't be, that that's what a less informed person would think, but not him who knows PIDW like the palm of his hand and therefore knows better etc, etc.) If he obfuscates his real thoughts or feelings, it's not in an attempt to deceive others, but a result of his constant inner gaslighting and paper thin face.

"But he didn't act like that as Peerless Cucumber!" If you behave the same way irl as you do online you need to spend less time online.

Logically, it's impossible to keep a facade 24/7, so it can be argued that Luo Binghe saw him in a more relaxed state, consolidated his love for him when he got to know him while sharing a home for two years. I don't believe that Shen Qingqiu kept his Qingqiusona on at all times, but I do believe he would've been more reserved in front of his disciple. And, as I said before, you behave differently depending on who you're with, and of course never say out loud all the things running inside your head.

I believe that if Shen Yuan transmigrated into some random NPC and not Shen Qingqiu, he would have behaved pretty much the same, but would've been far more easier to read and less formal, although formal enough as according to whatever station he belonged in such a case.

It can also be argued that, after acting for almost a decade as how he believed an immortal should act, it became an actual part of his personality, being aloof and reserved, keeping quiet when in doubt instead of spouting a cutting remark (as I picture he would pre-transmigration).

People do change, they can become louder or quieter, kinder or crueler, less or more confident. Such changes happen according to your choices, choices that become easier and easier to make as time passes, until the choice to be loud or quiet, kind or cruel, becomes your instinctive response.

So no, Shen Qingqiu hasn't put on an act beyond what's normal (trying to appear calm when you aren't, trying to seem unbothered when ashamed) since the skinner arc.

So, does he keep acting like a cold master after he and Luo Binghe got together? No. He doesn't. He's never been cold to Luo Binghe, unless forced by the System or when he was scared out of his mind with fear in Jinlan City. In fact, after they got together Bingqiu acts very much like any other couple would (... When the couple is bingqiu.)

For example, we can see them being playful in the extras, like in the Honeymoon Chronicle:

Shen Qingqiu feels comfortable enough to fool around with Luo Binghe, as long as It's the two of them alone.

Shen Qingqiu is not putting on an act, and hasn't done so since the first year after he transmigrated. This is his real personality. Would he have behaved differently had he not transmigrated? Yes, of course. And had he transmigrated as someone else? Yes, obviously. Our experiences shape us. He would've been different but not unrecognizable. To become drastically different, he'd have to also live through some drastic experiences. But, in the same way you can recognize yourself in the person you were 10, 20, 30 years ago, despite all the glaring differences, despite all the ways you've changed, Shen Qingqiu would've remained the same at his core.

My heart aches when I think about how guilty Skinner felt about losing Mulder and having to tell Scully. It aches even more when I think about how he empathized with Scully because of that and chose to spare her the pain of having to tell Mulder about William by doing it for her.

You could say it wasn’t his place, but Skinner knew how it felt to be tasked with giving someone earth-shattering news and feeling like you’re to blame.

Someone spared him, and he wanted to spare Scully.

With how close Scully and Skinner were at this point in their relationship, he knew she lived in fear Mulder would never forgive her, and he just wanted to help protect her from what could have been a brutal first-reaction to the news.

Skinner really was the king of delivering soul crushing news to them throughout the course of the series.

memento mori might be the most loving episode of the series, i think…like, just, transcendently so. ever since i rewatched it again a couple weeks ago, i keep thinking of skinner walking into work, and mulder just sitting in his office. and it makes me laugh to see because, he’s a gremlin, and he’d just been sitting there, for god knows how long. but also, he just found out his best friend is going to die, and where else can he go? where can he go for help? for somewhere to sit in the morning. the way that he says he wants to talk to CSM about scully, and skinner says, no. not under any circumstances. “you can’t ask the truth of a man who trades in lies. i won’t let you.” and then the final moment of the episode: not mulder, not scully, but skinner surrounded in smoke. having offered himself up instead, sold his soul to the devil, to save those two weirdos who work for him in the basement. he doesn’t owe them anything. but he gives up everything. and they would/have/will do the same, for him. the lone gunmen…these 3 boys…frohike, who brought scully flowers when she was in a coma, who sat at her kitchen table when mulder was missing. byers, who debates government ops with her, calls her for help from vegas, or the bermuda triangle. langly, who was hacking fake entry codes for her the first day they met. they listen, they provide information, they pack up to do some government facility heists, to find anything they can to help. penny northern, the woman that scully can look to for both her past and her future, the woman that recognizes her from the missing time of their lives. “i held you and comforted you in that place.” penny goes first, with dana by her side, inspires hope and will in her. the x-files is about love, yes, but not just because mulder and scully are full of it, because they’re surrounded by it. even when it feels like they’re alone against the world.

All I have for this AU is a premise... but... *shoves it into the public*!

In SVSSS after ever after, Shen Yuan and Luo Binghe become parents. Shen Yuan and Luo Binghe's firstborn son is the most polite, filial, and loving son ever! Cliche, but okay.

And then Shen Jiu is reborn as their second son. Shen Jiu has a gege again - one that hasn't betrayed him yet. One that wears a fake smile and is disgustingly polite to everyone and acts morally superior to Shen Jiu.

Shen Jiu hates it.

Shen Jiu hates how much he loves his second life's gege's cooking and hugs. His gege is always pristine in appearance, never a speck of dirty or grime to be found on his intricately embordered robes - only the very best for Luo Binghe's children. His ge is a genius, a master at understanding and composing music, a prodigal artist capturing human profiles with a simple swipe of leftover charcoal from the kitchen fires...

Shen Jiu is absolutely disgusted how he can't even keep up with a babe. Even in this life, he's struggling to catch up with others. He hates his ge, especially with the way that his brother always accidentally managed to trip over another one of Shen Jiu's past hurts, carelessly and unaware of how his comments about slave children begging on the streets or runaway slaves carved another wound into Shen Jiu's soul-

And then one day he finds his brother smiling over a dead human body, cheerfully humming as he expertly carved out a kidney with far too much expertise to be a beginner or even an hobbyist. Shen Jiu would know - he was once the Qing Jing peak lord and deal with many skinner demons.

"Ah, didi!" His ge immediately sensed the presence in the clearing. "Care to join?" His smile was calm but his red eyes glinted menacingly.

Because Hannibal Lector was reborn as Shen Yuan and Luo Binghe's first son.

And he knew that his younger brother had great potential to be an artist that had to be awakened.

My Thoughts

It's been a few years since I've committed to a daily creative project, but this month flew by. It was a joy to prove myself, in a way; and an even greater privilege to take other people's prompts and turn them into stories. I'm proud of the work I put in, proud of how they turned out, and proud that they entertained anyone who read them.

I did discover a personal writing flaw: grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. Which, given that I write and "edit" everything in under an hour and that my brain autocorrects and rewrites while I'm actively writing, is understandable. There are multiple reblogged versions of my finalized fics because I would spot an error and edit after publication but not before the readers hit. And that's okay! (When my Ao3 submission goes through, I'll upload each fic "in its final form", so no sweat there.)

Trivia

Each fic was named with a quote from The X-Files, mostly from Mulder and Scully but also by various side characters (Phoebe Green, Krycek, and Maggie, namely.)

I tackled Scully's religion a lot this month as a way to work out my frustrations with her episodes: her belief in the series has always been chocked up as "yes man" syndrome; and I believe it did a disservice to Scully, multi-layered character that she is. I hope it did her a little more justice.

In a way, I dedicate "The Dead Are Everywhere, Scully" to @enigmaticdrblockhead-- whose writing not only influenced that piece but also sticks with me to this day-- and @perpetually-weirdening-- whose interest in an immortal Scully breathed life into this idea.

In a way, I dedicate "The Truth is out There, But So Are Lies" to @suitablyaggrieved: the discussion we had (concerning Mulder's ability to lie quite well) rattled around in my head until I put it down "on paper."

In a way, I dedicate "Something Approaching a Normal Life" to Baroness Blixen, who is the master of weaving angst and fluff into her holiday fics.

In a way, I dedicate "I Wonder If You Think It's Safe Enough to Indulge Yourself" to @settle-down-frohike because it reads more meta than fic (while also reading as fic.)

In a way, I dedicate "He Had Parents Who Loved Him" to @television-overload, whose baseball fic inspired by Field of Dreams still takes up space in my noggin.

And I think that's all my thoughts for now~.

On the nature of SPN multiverses, alternate realities, and created realities:

"It really depends on the Supernatural physicists, or metaphysicists, sort of getting into the nature of what those universes are and the degree which, for example French Mistake has a universe in it that legitimately characterizes that’s another universe, that’s real, or a multiverse, that’s real, we don’t really know necessarily but there are intimations that It’s A [Terrible] Life might have been more a created experience, more of a B.F. Skinner* behavioral kind of rat maze. I think it balances pretty well in the middle and that partly is because of Zachariah’s desperation. They’re really up against it and the way that Lucifer operates, Lucifer and Cas operate, in the presence of past Dean, in a way that kind of encompasses the idea of where the hell are you from, this changes things, or Lucifer saying, hey, I don’t care where you’re from, this doesn’t change things. There’s some kind of, as always sort of implied, especially in the first 5 years, that there’s an under-pinning of angelic rules, there’s a by-laws system where maybe you can raise the Titanic and get a certain number of 50,000 extra souls because of the quirk in the by-laws but you’d better dot your i’s or you’ll get caught. And something similar going on here where that could very well be one of the universes where the game runs itself and we don’t really know and I don’t mind not knowing that one." ---
