I have gotten the opportunity to be the Safe Queer Adult for several teens while substituting at a high school and it has been the most incredible experience. I am beyond thankful for each and every exhausting moment and I need to vent some positivity.

I am so grateful for the two closeted-ish trans kiddos who anxiously shared their information in whispers after hearing me say "You can call me Miss or Mister, I don't care." and now regularly swing by my room just to hear their actual names/pronouns used with joy. And I'm grateful for the 14 year old lesbian (who will absolutely build her future wife a she-shed from scratch someday) who heard me say "my girlfriend" and immediately stopped fucking around in class and started turning in assignments/chatting with me at my desk/asking her more studious friends for help focusing. I'm even grateful for the conservative boy who started thinking about how his words impact other people after I said one of his offhanded homophobic comments really hurt my feelings - cause he spends every morning before school in my room chatting even though I'm not his teacher. He hadn't known I was queer until that moment, but other students did, and the awkward silence must have made him think.

Cause I'm the Cool Substitute. The one who will work with you about extensions and let you have test corrections without jumping through extra hoops. I know from living through both sides of the relationship that respecting kids and showing them patience is the best and fastest way to ensure empathetic, confident adults.

They know how dearly I treasure each nervously extended phone screen covered with prom dress pinterest ideas and transitional haircut options. They can rely on how hype I will get over their 3-second "new haircut glamour pose" when they walk into class. It costs me nothing to give an exhausted athlete a 1 day extension on his project after 2 consecutive basketball games. Kindness goes so far, but especially with kids, and I hope this little rant can reach some people who need to see it.

something i think a lot about at my job vs. online culture is that terrible people deserve and need support. i'm not talking about supporting harmful ideology or politics, but at the level of parents and kids, community members - abusive parents need support, sexual offenders need it. but that doesn't mean it can or should come from the people they've harmed. you really need well-trained, experienced outside parties who can work, for example, with parents who cannot keep care of their children to become truly capable and safe at doing that.

one of the trainings i've been trained to give explicitly discussed how to work with parents who have perpetrated the exact type of trauma the training is designed to address. but many people can learn, and sometimes it's about finding ways the parents can engage with their kids even if the kids don't live with them, because if you do what we call TPR - termination of parental rights - you often end up with kids going back to their parents as soon as it's legal again when they come of age. removal of children from a home is just about one of the most traumatic things you can do to a child, and it's the state that does that, not the parents. that is additional trauma, always, no matter how bad the situation.

in a better world I think we'd have this culture embedded at the local and neighborhood and individual community levels, so that nobody ever has to bear it alone, so that there are additional supports for all kids (and parents, and community members) even beyond those close to the person. not everybody will have ideal outcomes, and people have to be willing to grow - but they won't ever become willing if they aren't engaged by people who can support them.

#work woes #a common reason for placement disruptions is perceived danger to other kids in the home by a youth! #and those kids even if they did 'unforgiveable' things need support. what that looks like depends on the unique situation #but they deserve it for their own sake and their family's and so on. #also TPR is the most evil acronym ever i hate hearing it. say the evil thing you're doing don't fucking disguise it with acronyms.

So apparently KOSA (2024 edition) is getting either thrown out until next year or put into effect in six days. That was a guesstimate based on a different person saying that's when Congress is back in session and may be false.

It failed the last two times because people were voting against it.

This time, KOSA has traction among the pro-LGBTQ parties. Because nobody is fucking calling their bullshit and screaming from the rooftops that calling it the "Kids Online Safety Act" is misleading.

What will it passing do?

Nothing much, only prevent any education on LGBTQIA+ (it's that stupid fucking argument about us grooming kids again), shut down nearly every fandom space on the internet, and make it required for most big tech companies to have your ID.

Want to have resources for kids to discover their identity readily available? Yes? Then fucking speak up against this stupid fucking bill.

Fandom spaces like Tumblr, Twitter (? I thought the MAGA assholes liked Musk?), Tiktok, Archive Of Our Own, and any other website that hosts fanfic or fanart? Either shut down permanently, forced to uproot to a different country and down for a while (best case scenario, and they likely won't be able to send any data, and therefore fanfics, to the US), or gutted so that you only get to put G rated cishet ships on there, if any shipping at all. How to avoid that? I've already said it: Call your fucking representatives.

Want to avoid the fucking dystopic task of being legally obligated to give big tech your government issue ID? Again, cause an uproar. Call your goddamned representatives.

If they can pass this, the ripple effects could be catastrophic.

So, for fuck's sake, any Americans that can impact this stupid fucking bill and see this? Do everything in your power to shut it down because you have until February twenty sixth (26th) to send this bill back to where it belongs.
