The Intervention of the Sabine Women by Jacques-Louis David
The painting depicts Romulus's wife Hersilia – the daughter of Titus Tatius, leader of the Sabines – rushing between her husband and her father and placing her babies between them. A vigorous Romulus prepares to strike a half-retreating Tatius with his spear, but hesitates.
The rocky outcrop in the background is the Tarpeian Rock, a reference to civil conflict, since the Roman punishment for treason was to be thrown from the rock. According to legend, when Tatius attacked Rome, he almost succeeded in capturing the city because of the treason of the Vestal Virgin Tarpeia, daughter of Spurius Tarpeius, governor of the citadel on the Capitoline Hill. She opened the city gates for the Sabines in return for "what they bore on their arms". She believed that she would receive their golden bracelets. Instead, the Sabines crushed her to death and threw her from the rock, later named for her.

Ok what’s ‘*weird Al intensifies*’ about that sounds bonkers
I feel like i have to forewarn you that weird al makes no appearances whatsoever in this WIP. This is a short and surprisingly emotional AU where various members of the Ghost crew get thrown back in time and basically adopt their past selves while pretending to be long lost family members.
"wait jess, why is it called weird al intensifies-" cause there's a lyric that goes "there's always two of me just a-hangin' around" in weird al's 'i think i'm a clone now', which i had stuck in my head at the time i was writing this fic, and there IS two of everyone in this AU, and it was 2AM, and I didn't have a better title. that's why.
heheh um annnnyway, snippet?

Sabine woke up feeling warm, dry, and not in pain, so the only logical conclusion to draw was that she was dead.
“You’re not dead, kid.”
She opened her eyes with a short gasp and tried to sit up, but a gentle hand caught her shoulder and pushed her back down.
Sabine looked up.
There was a Mandalorian woman standing over her, in brightly painted armor that reminded Sabine of her own.
They were in some kind of ship; Sabine was lying on a bunk. Her mud-spattered armor had been stripped off and set aside, and she could feel bandages wrapped around her stomach.
“Who are you?”
The woman stared at her for a second, and then turned away. “You can call me Tatia.”
“Are you a bounty hunter?”
Tatia shook her head, stepping across the room to some shelves and collecting a few items. “I tried that, once. Didn’t work out.”
“I’m a bounty hunter,” Sabine said, slowly raising herself to sit, propped against the back of the bunk.
“I suspected that.” Tatia came back. “Did the bounty shoot you, or did your buddies decide there would be more profits to go around without you there?”
Sabine tried not to flinch, but Tatia must have seen. She sat down carefully on the edge of the bunk, setting aside the supplies with a sigh.
“I get it, kid. Betrayal sucks. There was a time when everyone I knew and trusted turned their backs on me. I had no one left. Felt like I hit rock bottom.”
“I don’t have anyone left, either,” Sabine said, and was about to add that she didn’t need anyone when Tatia spoke up.
“That’s not quite true,” she said, and then she reached up and took off her helmet, and Sabine gaped in astonishment as a face just like hers smiled back at her.
Tatia’s eyes sparkled. “You’ve got me, little cousin.”

History of the Roman Empire: The reign of King Romulus, Titus Tatius and Lucius Tarquin
The Roman Empire, a dominant ancient force, spanned law, politics, architecture, and literature, leaving a lasting global impact.
From law and politics to architecture and civil engineering, literature and the arts, and every language we speak today, the Roman Empire’s influence is still felt. The Roman Empire, which is still one of the most influential ancient empires in history, was a post-Republican state of ancient Rome. The city of Rome served as its principal hub, establishing itself in 27 BCE following the…

So a few weeks ago we had an in-class writing assignment (evil, pain, hatred) where we were supposed to explore Clitophon (of Leucippe and Clitophon) as an unreliable narrator by writing a letter, monologue, etc. from the perspective of another character, so I spent 15 minutes writing borderline-fanfiction from the perspective of Clitophon’s gay cousin and I got 100% on the assignment. Do you want to see my instructor-approved Clinias fic? Because you’re going to:

Summanus (Latin: Summānus) was the god of nocturnal thunder in ancient Roman religion, as counterposed to Jupiter, the god of diurnal (daylight) thunder. His precise nature was unclear even to Ovid.
Pliny thought that he was of Etruscan origin, and one of the nine gods of thunder. Varro lists Summanus among gods to whom Sabine king Titus Tatius dedicated altars (arae) in consequence of a votum. Paulus Diaconus considers him a god of lightning.
In ancient Roman religion, the dii (also di) Novensiles or Novensides are collective deities of obscure significance found in inscriptions, prayer formulary, and both ancient and early-Christian literary texts.
Pliny mentions nine gods of the Etruscans who had the power of wielding thunderbolts, pointing toward Martianus's Novensiles as gods pertaining to the use of thunder and lightning (fulgura) as signs. Books on how to read lightning were one of the three main branches of the disciplina Etrusca, the body of Etruscan religious and divinatory teachings. Within the Etruscan discipline, Jupiter has the power to wield three types of admonitory lightning (manubiae) sent from three different celestial regions. The first of these, mild or "perforating" lightning, is a beneficial form meant to persuade or dissuade. The other two types are harmful or "crushing" lightning, for which Jupiter requires the approval of the Di Consentes, and completely destructive or "burning" lighting, which requires the approval of the di superiores et involuti (hidden gods of the "higher" sphere).
Several scholars have identified the Novensiles with the council of gods who decide on the use of the third, most destructive type of lightning. Carl Thulin proposed that two theonyms from the Piacenza Liver — a bronze model of a sheep's liver covered with Etruscan inscriptions pertaining to haruspicy — ought to be identified with the two councils, Cilens(l) with the Novensiles and Thufltha(s) with the Consentes Penates. The Novensiles would thus correspond to the di superiores et involuti and possibly the Favores Opertanei ("Secret Gods of Favor") referred to by Martianus Capella. Martianus, however, locates the Favores in the first region of the sky, with the Di Consentes and Penates, and the Novensiles in the second; the Favores are perhaps the Fata, "Fates".

I did an English translation of Poem 104 from Book 11 of Martial's Epigrams. I think it's quite good
it is however rather NSFW (like, smuttily so) and therefore may be found under the cut
"Dear Wife" Martial 11.104
Honey, it's my way or the highway: I'm not Curius, Numa, or Tatius. I like nights that stretch into drinking and fun: You’ve had your water, you get mopey and can't wait to leave. You want the dark: I like to play in full view of the lamp And let its rays illuminate my form. Cloths and clothes and modest robes cover you: But a girl can’t get nude enough for me. I adore hot steamy kisses: You give me the kind you’d give your grandma in the morning. You don't deem the deed worthy of moving, or help out by moaning Or fingering yourself; you fuck like you're preparing wine and incense: Trojan servants used to start wanking outside the door Every time Andromache sat on Hector’s cock and rode him, And even while Ulysses snored, faithful Penelope used to Always have her hand on her sweet spot. You won't let me fuck you in the arse: Cornelia let Gracchus, Julia let Pompey, and didn't Portia let you, too, Brutus? Before that particular attendant started mixing sweet wine for him It was Juno who let Jupiter Ganymede her! If you want respectability, you can be Lucretia all day: at night I want Lais.
Uxor, vade foras aut moribus utere nostris: non sum ego nec Curius nec Numa nec Tatius. Me jucunda juvant tractae per pocula noctes: tu properas pota surgere tristis aqua. Tu tenebris gaudes: me ludere teste lucerna et juvat admissa rumpere luce latus. Fascia te tunicaeque obscuraque pallia celant: at mihi nulla satis nuda puella jacet. basia me capiunt blandas imitata columbas: tu mihi das aviae qualia mane soles. Nec motu dignaris opus nec voce juvare nec digitis, tamquam tura merumque pares: masturbabantur Phrygii post ostia servi, Hectoreo quotiens sederat uxor equo, et quamvis Ithaco stertente pudica solebat illic Penelope semper habere manum. Pedicare negas: dabat hoc Cornelia Graccho, Julia Pompeio, Porcia, Brute, tibi; dulcia Dardanio nondum miscente ministro pocula Juno fuit pro Ganymede Jovi. Si te delectat gravitas, Lucretia toto sis licet usque die: Laida nocte volo.

Vejovis, also known as Vediovis or Vedivs, is an obscure Deity of Roman mythology associated with an uncertain number of attributes: some researchers believe Him to be a God of healing while some believe Him to be an Underworld God, equivalent to the Ouranic Jupiter.
According to the list of Roman festivals, Vejovis is celebrated on the 1st of January, 21st of May, and 7th of March.
Very little is known of this Deity, but from the scarce sources available to us we know that He was celebrated in Rome at a spot between the two summits of the Capitoline Hill, the Arx and the Capitol, as well as on the Island of Tiber. There are historical records speaking on two temples to Vejovis being erected in these areas alongside one at Bovillae, around 12 miles South from Rome. Ovid claims that the Capitoline temple was erected in the times of Romulus and fully consecrated on the Nones of March, or the 7th of March. Pliny the Elder marks that the first sanctuary to the God was likely made out of cypress wood.
From what we know, Vejovis was praised through a sacrifice of a she-goat referred to as humano ritu: a substitute for human sacrifice.
The worship itself potentially goes back to two historical sources: either the God was brought into Rome from Sabines by the Sabine King Titus Tatius, or Vejovis is closely related to the Etruscan God Veive; the latter is supported by a mention of Vejovis in an Etruscan inscription where He is placed among the thundering Gods.
The name of the Divinity is a matter of discussions and questions as well, though the most likely etymology points to Him being associated with Dii Inferi and being known as “the opposite of Jupiter”. However, the versions “little Jupiter” or “sinister Jupiter” aren’t completely out of the realm of possibilities.
Ovid, for example, describes Vejovis as a young Jupiter accompanied by a female goat while Gellius speaks of Him as a sinister force of chthonic nature. Some authors relate Vejovis to Apollo due to Their similar appearance. Vejovis seemed to possess a sort of protective power over Rome as Macrobius notes Him being invoked in time of war while Gellius portrays the God as carrying a quiver of arrows - or thunderbolts.
While the God is of very unclear origin, thus meaning we know very little of His rites, I’d still like to offer some ideas for His offerings:
𓃵 Cooked meat of goats and lambs, if you can afford some.
𓃵 Ethically acquired skulls, horns, or hooves of goats.
𓃵 Imagery of goats, whether it’s handmade or bought.
𓃵 Imagery of Ouranic nature: lightining strikes, heavy clouds, and so on.
𓃵 Everything pertaining to healing and medical arts: stethoscopes, medicine, and other objects used in the process of healing.

Selene and Endymion, by Ubaldo Gandolfi The Roman lunar deity, Luna In ancient Roman religion and myth, Luna is the divine embodiment of the Moon. She is often presented as the female complement of the Sun (Sol) conceived of as a god. Luna is also sometimes represented as an aspect of the Roman triple goddess, along with Proserpina and Hecate. Luna is not always a distinct goddess, but sometimes rather an epithet that specializes a goddess, since both Diana and Juno are identified as moon goddesses. In Roman art, Luna attributes are the crescent moon is often depicted driving a two-yoke chariot called biga. In Roman art, the charioteer Luna is regularly paired with the Sun driving a four-horse chariot. Varro, an ancient Roman scholar and writer, lists Luna among twelve deities who are vital to agriculture, as does Vergil in a different list of twelve, in which he refers to Luna and Sol as clarissima mundi lumina, the world's clearest sources of light. Varro also lists Luna among twenty principal gods of Rome. In this list, Luna is distinguished from both Diana and Juno, who also appear on it. The Romans dated the cultivation of Luna as a goddess at Rome to the semi-legendary days of the kings. Titus Tatius was supposed to have imported the cult of Luna to Rome from the Sabines, but Servius Tullius was credited with the creation of her temple on the Aventine Hill, just below a temple of Diana. The anniversary of the temple founding was celebrated annually on March 31. The Aventine temple may have been destroyed by the Great Fire of Rome during the reign of Nero. Luna's Greek counterpart was Selene. In Roman art and literature, myths of Selene are adapted under the name of Luna.

Gods I should’ve read Leucippe and Clitophon way sooner. I’m not even that far into the first book and I can’t breathe I’m wheezing so much.
So the main character’s cousin, Clinias (a 20-something man), has a boyfriend, Charicles, and they’ve just found out that Charicles is being betrothed (to a woman! gross!) by his father, and Clinias’ immediate response is to start listing off every problematic straight couple in all of mythology as evidence for why neither of them should ever have to get married because women are icky and every problem ever can be traced back to a straight couple and also most of the husbands got murdered by their wives and they don’t want to get murdered by a woman they just want to be gay. Together.
Like full disclosure they get pretty misogynistic at some points but it’s also just really really funny.

Denarius of L. Titurius L. f. Sabinus, minted in 89 BCE. On the obverse, the head of Titus Tatius, legendary king of the Sabines who waged war against Romulus following the Roman abduction of the Sabine women. On the reverse, the death of Tarpeia. Overcome by greed (and, according to some later accounts, having fallen in love with Tatius), Tarpeia agreed to betray the Capitoline citadel to the Sabines in exchange for "what they wore on their left arms" (meaning their gold bracelets). The Sabines rewarded her by crushing her to death beneath their shields, also worn on their left arms. Photo credit: GFDL/Wikimedia Commons.
