The sun rose over Nouveau Paris. Hope had started to burn to dark ashes with the death of Admiral Giscard at Lovat, and had burnt to dust by now, with the knowledge of the planned Mantie attack on Haven to come any day now, from Eighth Fleet, like the last war, and with the knowledge that the Republic wouldn't be getting any ceasefires this time around, as well as the news of the capture of one of Haven’s best Admirals, Admiral Tourville, and the near-complete loss of Admiral Chin’s Fifth Fleet, which had limped back to Haven with 17 ships, out of an original 85 podlayers. The sun, ironically named Hope, rose over not the reborn Republic, the Athens of the stars, but a Republic waiting for the death blow from the sword of Eighth Fleet, which they all knew was coming.

Author's Note: This is the last really dark sunrise, just saying. Sorry for getting a little behind on the tumblr posts, I've just been using the queue, and not posting the chapter here, even in the queue until after it comes out on Ao3.

‘I heard tell it was a woman,’ said Ivor. ‘Highborn and perilously fair to behold. Men and women see her and forget themselves. They turn their own blades upon themselves to join her ranks just for a chance to be at her side.’

‘I have heard the stories,’ the Prince said.

‘Dead men don’t claim vengeance,’ Ricard said.

‘The men, perhaps,’ said Halan. ‘But they say that the queen of the dead that rules the hills of Tourville will stop at nothing for it.’

‘The ancient Kingdom of Tourville fell to the necromancer and his hordes long ago, in the Elder Days,’ Ricard said in an aside to Gwyn. ‘Betrayed, some say, by its crown-prince. Its towns and cities put to the torch. Its people slaughtered or scattered. Only shadows live in the ruins now.’

‘Aye,’ said Ivor. ‘Shadows and creatures of darkness. They say the dead walk those lands. There are some shadows where even the foulest of beasts dare not tread.’

Le Soleil Royal, 104 guns, launched 1669, by Pierre Puget (1620 -1694)

She was the flagship of the French fleet du Ponant and of Admiral de Tourville. On 12 May 1692, the Soleil Royal led a fleet of 45 ships heading for Barfleur. On 29 May, those ships met the combined fleets of the English and Dutch with a total of 97 ships. After a twelve-hour battle, the combined fleets fled with heavy losses. Damaged by the battle, three French ships, including the Soleil Royal, were towed onto the beach at Cherbourg for repairs. On 2 and 3 June 1692, the defenceless ships were set on fire and destroyed by the English and Dutch.

So in writing my essay about Moriarty I was reminded of just how beautifully dark Holmes’s description of Baron Gruner is. 

(I’m still absolutely convinced Gruner was partly based on the real multiple murderer (and possibly a serial killer) Henri de Tourville who killed his second wife in the Stelvio Pass in the Austrian Tyrol)
