A Prince's Legacy Revisted

Hindsight's funny thing. I wrote the first chapter of A Prince's Legacy 6 years ago simply wanted to tell the story of Hunter Prince, and how Wonder Woman choosing to raise a son with the guidance and love of the Amazons wouldn't make her less of an Amazon herself after the comic book story arc where Hunter's character appears in wasted the potential of the of the idea pissed me off to no end. (It still does.) Honestly, I felt like I could give the idea the justice it deserves when I wrote the first chapter and I never anticipated this story to grow in popularity like it has.

But it's been a few years, and I've written so much fanfiction since, always feeling like I'm improving my writing style with each new chapter I post, so I wanted the story I still care very much about to reflect that. I have spent the last two weeks not rewriting the first 2 chapters of A Prince's Legacy, but revising them to add more dialog, more descriptive actions in scenes to help the story flow better, a greater understanding of what is going on in a character's thoughts in certain moments of the story, changing some aspects entirely that didn't make sense or stick the landing as well as I would've liked first time around,and I plan to continue the revision process with every chapter up to the most current one. The process is slow going through as I got an actual job in the big scary real world during the last two years that takes up most of my free time and energy more days than not, so I ask that fans of the series bear with me.

Some highlights of the first two chapters are:

A deeper conversation between Hippolyta and baby Hunter in the introductory scene of the first chapter.

A different scene between Diana and Hunter after the 15 year time skip.

A more fleshed out motivation for Lorena that dives deeper into her love for Arthur and Mera as well as Atlantis.

A deeper familial bond for Lorena with Arthur and Mera explicitly stating they consider Lorena to be their daughter, and Lorena stating she considers them to be her parents.

Showcasing Lorena's Aqua-Kinetic abilities way earlier in the story.

Longer and more detailed action sequences in chapter 2, and Lorena being more of a badass during those sequences.

Giving Mera more than two lines of dialog and an action sequence during chapter 2 instead of having her constantly worrying the children. (Like that meme from The Simpsons)

Mera challenging Diana directly about what they are willing to give up for the sake of their children.

Hopefully, the beginning of a more well-rounded story.

I had forgotten how much this story meant to me when I wrote it. I re-read it again today and wish to share it.

Summary-

Prompt: Wonder Woman prompt - was there any sort of culture shock to Diana when she left Themyscira that went on beneath the surface? It must have been something to hear stories of the outside world, but another altogether to actually see it.

Diana learns to deal with her thoughts through diary writing. She may be one of the strongest women on Earth. But her heart is gentle like any other, even gentler perhaps. What does she do when heartbreak knocks at her door?

Excerpt-

Man’s world was a distant dream on Themyscira. Stories of babies and ice cream, snow and tea were sometimes recalled in hushed, slurred whispers… usually under the influence of spiced hot wine. But in the harsh glare of daylight, the softness of those wonders melted away… leaving behind the chilled reality of what she had lost.

Her heart refused to repair itself.

Each day, it bled anew for a budding love that had been crushed just at the threshold of bloom.

She could not forgive man’s world for taking Steve from her.

She was the most beautiful girl in any universe. She was one in a million, a billion, a googoplex. Steve Junior gazed at her picture and lay it beside him on the bed. He had lost her forever. A tear ran down his nose. He sniffled. He wondered if love was nothing but pain? His mother had waited and morned over his father for 100 years. Would he do the same for her?

He longed for his mother to return from the conference in Madrid. He needed a hug and a shoulder to cry on so desperately.

He fast forwarded the news footage to moments after he dived into the vat of acid. There she was in the crowd. She had returned to him only to see his untimely demise. There was no going back from that. His dad had been right. There were consequences.

He felt the mattress dip. Perhaps his aunt Traci or his paternal grandmother had come to give him some solace?

“What was her name?”

His eyes went wide when he heard his father’s voice behind him on the bed. His voice was soft, gentle. He hadn’t heard his dad talk to him like that since he was a little boy. He rolled around on the bed and faced him. He father was holding her picture.

“She’s beautiful, isn’t she?” he could barely get the words out. He was choking up.

“She is.” His father said.

He regarded his 16 year old son with love and compasion. He knew exactly what he was going through.

“I was always watching over you.” Steve Senior said.

“Especialy when you felt the most alone. You have always been my ray of sunshine. My hope for the future. Whenever I saw you roll over by yourself, learn to crawl, the first time you called me Daddy. You made it all worth it. You were my reason for fighting. For sacrificing my life twice. You and your sisters are the greatest gifts your mother ever gave me. I thank the Presence for all of you every day.”

Steve Junior hugged his father tightly and wept. It was exactly what he needed to hear. His father rubbed his back and patted it softly.

“It’s alright Son. It’ll be alright.”

“Will the pain ever go away?” he asked.

“No, Son, not entirely. But it will ease with time. It did for me when I lost your mother twice.”

Flying back in his cessna 340 from Spain to the States, it was a long 9 hour flight. They both had long since fallen into a routine. They would talk and hold hands; then they would sleep a bit while Steve put the plane on auto pilot. After Steve had told Diana about their son’s eventful stay in a parallel universe there was a long pause.

“How is he?” Diana asked concern in her voice.

Steve sighed.

“He’ll live, just like we did. Losing the Love of your life is never easy.”

Diana’s eyes went wide.

“That bad?”

“Yes, I’m afraid so.” Steve said.

Rebirth and the 2017 movie convinced a lot of people that you cannot do Wonder Woman stories without Steve Trevor there as her love interest, even though there's a good 45 years worth of WW comics with barely any Steve Trevor in them.

Chris Pine is shocked Patty Jenkins‘ “Wonder Woman” franchise is dead. The actor recently spoke to Business Insider while promoting his feature directorial debut “Poolman” and said he’s struggling to understand how Warner Bros. could pull the plug on a franchise that grossed the studio nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

“I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” Pine said. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.”

Pine starred as Steve Trevor opposite Gal Gadot‘s “Wonder Woman” in two Warner Bros. comic book tentpoles directed by Jenkins: 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and 2022’s “Wonder Woman 1984.” The director was developing a third movie for Gadot’s superhero when DC Studios brought in James Gunn and Peter Safran as its new leaders. The duo are creating a new DC Universe and Gadot’s Wonder Woman is not a part of it.

In his interview with Business Insider, Pine said that he doubted he would’ve returning for “Wonder Woman 3” had it been made as his character is “dead” and “gonzo,” adding, “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.” He also remembered originally being skeptical of the role of Steve Trevor.

“I had no interest in playing the boyfriend, and it sounded like second fiddle,” Pine said. “Then, in talking to Patty, the way she described it was, ‘Forget the superhero of it all, this is a romance, this is ‘Casablanca,’ that’s the movie I want to make.’ I was like, oh, now that is very cool because when have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up.”

Jenkins confirmed on the “Talking Pictures” podcast in March that her experience with “Wonder Woman” is over “for the time being, easily forever.”

“They aren’t interested in doing any ‘Wonder Woman’ for the time being,” Jenkins said. “It’s not an easy task, with what’s going on with DC. James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they are planning on doing or why, so I have sympathy for what a big job it is and they have to follow their heart and do what they’ve got planned.”

Jenkins had been developing a third “Wonder Woman” to star Gadot when news broke in December 2022 that their “Wonder Woman 3” had fallen apart after Warner Bros. leadership passed on Jenkins’ treatment for the sequel. Jenkins publicly exited the project. The news hit shortly after James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins of DC Studios, which led to speculation that Jenkins had rebuffed efforts to reshape “Wonder Woman 3” to fit into their DC Universe.

“I never walked away,” Jenkins shared in a post on Twitter at the time. “I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”

Gunn and Safran’s new DC universe will launch with superheroes such as Superman, Batman and Supergirl, but Wonder Woman is not yet announced for the new franchise.

Lynda Carter had $25 left in her bank account when she got the call that she had landed the part of Wonder Woman in the television series of the same name. She beat 2000 other actresses to the part.

In the pilot and the first two episodes, Carter's transformation into Wonder Woman was accomplished by spinning her clothes off in slow motion. This proved to be too expensive and time consuming to do on a weekly basis. Finally, from the third episode on, they used a cheaper concept, for the transformation is the ball of light and, it was used through out the remainder of the three year run.

Carter controlled the flashes flying from her bullet-deflecting bracelets herself. She was holding a remote control device in her clasped hands.

The first season of the series was set during World War II. When the series moved from ABC to CBS the next year, the entire format of the show was changed with the immortal Wonder Woman returning to civilization in the late 1970s and teaming up with the son of Steve Trevor from the first season (of course played by the same actor, Lyle Waggoner). Trevor Sr. never mentions to his lookalike son that he had a secretary named Diana Prince for years and years. He also never mentions that he's close friends with (and even dated) Wonder Woman for years. And even though they both worked for the government, none of his coworkers mention the coincidence, and no government administrators confront him about this coincidence.

In 2017, Carter explained her perspective of portraying the Diana Prince/Wonder Woman character. Carter says she got the role back in 1975 largely because she looked the part, which was both a blessing and – as one of the show's producers warned her – a curse: "Oh, women are going be so jealous of you." Lynda: "Well, I said, 'Not a chance. They won't be, because I am not playing her that way. I want women to want to be me, or be my best friend!'" As Carter describes Wonder Woman, "There is something about the character where in your creative mind for that time in your life where you pretended to be her, or whatever the situation was, that it felt like you could fly."

I’m a ship fic writer by nature, and while I’ve been a fan of many films/shows/books over the years, it’s rare that I get the urge to delve into and explore a relationship through fanfic. I watched the 2009 Star Trek film when it came out and enjoyed it well enough, but nothing really grabbed me as a writer, the juggernaut pairing inherited from TOS having always left me pretty cold. I then got distracted by writing for a different juggernaut pairing for the next few years, plus I was living overseas at the time and spending limited time on fandom, so I completely missed that AOS McKirk had become its own fandom force to be reckoned with.

Years later, in the summer of 2017, I watched Wonder Woman and was delighted by Steve Trevor and, by association, the man I’d later come to appreciate as the Lesbian Chris. A couple months later, desperate for distraction on a flight to a work meeting, I spotted the 2009 film as an on-demand option and still had enough residual CPine affection to decide oh, what the hell, I might as well rewatch it, and hey, weren’t there a couple other movies in the series? I had a pretty ehhhh response to STID, so I went into Beyond expecting very little, only to reach The Bar Scene and find myself abruptly sitting straight up with eyes wide and hair on end like a cat woken from a deep sleep by the distant sound of a can opener.

Holy shit, thought I, is this…is this a THING?? And lo, it was.

I read a small handful of McKirk fics – I don’t even remember which ones, probably just the latest fics in the tag – and had that familiar feeling of, Hmm, okay, I guess, but the way *I* see them is… At which point I stopped reading and turned instead to getting down the broad strokes of both palimpsest and smoke in every lane (simultaneously at first, as evidenced by my very first note drafts with their original working titles):

I started a new Tumblr, eventually started posting palimpsest, was astounded that people actually liked it and wanted more of it, and, well, here we are.

Anyone else want to share their story? I feel like the majority of people currently active in McKirk fandom got later starts too, and I'd love to hear how folks tripped into the fandom.
