My dear lgbt+ kids,

Are public libraries an excellent resource for the lgbt+ community? Absolutely!

There is a whole lot of reasons for that: They provide access to information on a wide range of topics to everyone, including those who can't afford to buy books or need a safe space away from family to read about certain things. Many libraries offer more than books, for example internet access, CDs, DVDs or digital materials like audiobooks - and even if they don't have what you need, librarians are often able to tell you where else to find helpful resources.

You may need to pay for a library card to take books home but it's usually free to read them right there - so a library is also simply a quiet and warm indoor space you can spend time in when you don't have enough money to go anywhere else!

Is the point here that you should check out your public library if you haven't done so yet? Yes!

Is the point that librarians are perfect saints who are incapable of ever being homophobic, transphobic or otherwise discriminating against certain patrons (and anyone who has a negative story about them is just trying to discourage others from using helpful resources)? No.

I mention this because I feel it's a nuance that is sometimes missing from posts praising libraries. There are people who have had negative experiences in libraries - and acknowledging that actually doesn't contradict the beginning of this letter. It's a great resource offered by human beings and human beings sadly are capable of being shitty.

“I hate you too.” Taako twists another chunk of Lup’s curls up on top of her head.

“I hate you harder.”

“Good. It gives cha’boy strength.”

Lup snaps her teeth at him in the mirror.

Taako doesn’t flinch, just grins back as big and as smug as he can.

“Just stop taking my makeup?” She makes her eyes go wide enough that Taako almost relents.

He doesn’t though, he’s stronger than that, he’s a lifetime veteran of The Lup Look. She shouldn’t use it so often if she wants it to keep its potency. “How else was cha’boy supposed to get this shiny?” Taako wiggles his shimmery shimmery arm.

“By buying your own glitter, Goofus.”

“Uh huh, yeah, sure, no problem, cha’boy’ll start doing that as soon as you start buying your own skirts. Also washing up liquid.”

“I got some!”

“You got the off brand shit.” Taako doesn’t even try to hide his distain.

“It works just as wel…”

“No it fucking doesn’t! We’ve had this conversation, I refuse to believe that you think for a second that it does, you’re smarter than that.” Taako pins another chunk of hair firmly (but gently) in place.

“Aw! You think I’m smart?” Lup bats her eyelashes and gives him the sickliest smile she can manage in the mirror.

“I didn’t say that!” 

“You absolutely did, but fine, we’ll test the Garfield dish stuff sometime.” Lup shrugs nonchalantly, too nonchalantly.

Taako looks her straight in her mirror eyes. “You swapped it!” 

“I didn’t.” Mirror Lup avoids looking back at him.

“Prove it.”

“Prove I did!”

“Taako doesn’t need to prove it, he knows it.”

“Oh, so you decided I did something and that’s it forever? What if I assume you’re going to let me have full control of the TV for the rest of the month?”

“Breaking news, Dingus, you’re not Taako and therefore it doesn’t matter.”

“Cha’girl’s just decided that it works when she decides something’s true too.”

“That’s not how it works!”

“Then how does it work?”

Taako pins the last of her hair into place and adds the pins that make it look like there’s flames springing up from her crown.

“It works.”

“That’s not an answer, Ko.” Lup turns her head a few times, then adds, “...thanks, that looks great.”

“Yeah you do!”

“Flattery won’t get you anywhere.”

“It’s important to boost your confidence, Taako knows it’s tough being the less hot twin.” 

Lup kicks him. Taako isn’t entirely sure how because she’s sat down and he’s behind her and there’s a fucking chair in the way, but she manages it because she’s nothing if not resourceful.

“We have the same face!”

“Sure we do.” 

“You’re the worst.”

“I know you are, you said you are, but what am I?” Taako sticks his tongue out.

“Have I ever told you that I hate you?”

Taako taps his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm… have you, Lup Taaco, my most beloved sister, ever told me, your darling brother, that you hate me? Surely not! Surely you would never hurt cha’boy that way.”

Lup’s eyes narrow and Taako surreptitiously double checks where the nearest exit is. He can hurdle the costuming tables no problem. Sure, it’d take a while for Lucretia to forgive him if he fucked up her system, but life or death…

“Twintentional Destruction! It’s go time in 60 seconds!” Ren shouts through the door.

“We’re gonna crush ‘em.” Lup jumps out of the chair, there’s no ounce of doubt in her voice, it’s just fact.

“Natch.” Taako shrugs. “We’re unstoppable.”

“Do you wanna do the piggyback, or should I?”

“You can get on my back this time. You had that cool pose we practised.”

“Hell yeah! They’re not gonna know what hit ‘em.”

“What hit ‘em’ll be you. Clotheslining them from my back.”

“Fine, they might know…”

“But if we’re really quick…” Taako adds

“Then they might at least be slightly confused.”

“Do you know anything about these guys?” 

Taako had meant to, you know, do some kind of google or ask literally anyone for any information, but time happened and then the fight was today. He’d figure it out once he got out there.

Lup skrunkles up her nose in thought as they walk towards the staging area. “Nah. I think one of them was called Bluejean or something?”

“I saw some incredible feather cloak on the costume table, but ‘Creesh threatened to put a curse on me if I tried to steal it.”

“Did you try anyway?”

“Look, magic doesn’t exist right? But if it did…”

“If it did then Lucretia would definitely use it to damn your soul forever if you messed up the system.”

“Exactamundo. So you see how it’s not worth finding out if she can or not?”

“Yeah, fair. I’d miss you if she banished you to the depths of super hell.” Lup pats him fondly on the shoulder as they reach their marked entrance spot. Ren nods, holds up both hands to let them know there’s 10 seconds to go.

Intact, a defense to unmodified body

Yesterday I was checking my emails, my newsletter subscriptions more specifically, and I found this cool article about this book "Intact, a defense to unmodified body", which was also an interview with the author, Clare Chambers. I personally didn't know her before that, but I think I'll buy the book sooner or later cause it intrigued me.

Here's an excerpt of her interview

“Our culture is constantly telling us that our bodies are never good enough,” she says. “Shame about our bodies is something we absorb from the media, from commercial interests, and from each other. Our choices are strongly shaped by our social context — [...] So what is the cost of [opting out]? The fact that we want to have a body that is a certain way, and the fact that we associate a body that doesn't fit into that model as being something shameful, and the fact that there exists a procedure available to change the body — those are all socially created facts. They don't come from our own internal autonomy. This isn't to say that people who choose these practices are somehow duped, or that they're irrational. It can be absolutely rational to choose to undergo a procedure that brings your body in line with dominant ideals of attractiveness.

She went on speaking about how women are particularly targeted by these social standards; they waste their time to adhere to a beauty standard that emphasizes youth, a period of a woman's life in which she's more vulnerable. Metaphorically speaking society wants us to be eternally young, naive and insecure. This way we are chained to a standard we're afraid to challenge, while wasting our time and resources in order to reach it.

"Under sexist social norms, women are valued for their looks, not for their achievements. It is idealizing the point in a woman's life when she is less experienced, less wise, less competent, less powerful. It also provides women with something constantly to be worried about, in the sense that the aging process is something that takes up a lot of our time, a lot of mental energy, and a lot of our actual material resources. [...] It's not a surprise that many of us would participate in these structures. It is also not a surprise that women, when so much of our value is connected to our appearance, find value in engaging in that activity. The question is, what is that ‘beauty’ embodying and what are the consequences of not conforming?

After reading this interview I read another one I found by googling the book, I'll leave the link down below, here's another interesting excerpt

I find the phrase “getting your body back” so fascinating, and so telling. [...] What’s so interesting is that the phrase isn’t something like “getting slimmer after pregnancy” but rather “getting your body back”, which implies that the body you find yourself with after birth is not really yours. [...] But why should the pre-pregnancy body be more truly yours than the post-pregnancy body? After all, the average woman lives with a post-pregnancy body for longer than she lived with a pre-pregnancy body. If the ‘real’ body is the post-pubescent, pre-pregnancy body, that’s a body that a woman might have for only ten or twenty years out of an average lifespan of over eighty. ‘Your’ body that you are supposed to get ‘back’ is a body that was only ever going to be a temporary one. So the language of “getting your body back” is another way of saying that our actual, existing, real-life bodies are wrong. They are not good enough. They need to be returned to some idea of how they ought to be. And how they ought to be, in this narrative, is slim, youthful, focused on looks rather than accomplishments. These are ideals of femininity that do not serve women well.

We need to talk about healthcare and financial crises. There are a lot of us who wholeheartedly believe that there are cures to everything but that our illness is a form of profit for our country, especially within the United States. Just like the fact that instead of having fruit and vegetables and herbs be readily available and accessible for us, we’ve got to go buy them and as inflation increases, the price tags on healthier food choices increases. In the United States, you can get fined for not having insurance, but when you do have insurance you have to pay a fee to have it, large chunks of our pay checks are eaten up and taken from us as well as tax dollars. We not only have issues in the health care system regarding racial bias and discrimination but we also have a problem with the maternal mortality rate, especially in women of color, and especially in regards to black women.

We know who is most likely to get sickle cell anemia and who is most affected by it, and we know who is going to have a hard time affording a 2.2 million cure for sickle cell anemia. We know a large quantity of individuals with chronic illnesses or life threatening illnesses that require intensive medical care and medication are people or color or minorities. We know that people of color and minorities have historically been and systematically been financially unstable, have been paid more, or have been offered the lowest standard of care and resources. Why are we creating cures and services that we know a large percentage of our population cannot afford or does not have access to? And now, we have a case where even a larger percentage of our population cannot afford healthcare and services due to the economic state of our country.

We’re continuing to have children, especially as women, when we need to advocate for better healthcare and support. Women worldwide need to start setting better requirements for when they’re going to have children and how. As someone whose been interested in midwifery for years and has been reading up on midwifery and birthing practices and what is absolutely necessary and essential in order to give a woman a chance at having a smooth, healthy, and safe pregnancy. Vast majority of women who are having children don’t realize that today’s practices for birthing children or preparing you for labor and delivery are less than the bare minimum. Women need access to good food and need to be able to eat well and have a nutritionally balanced diet, women need to be able to participate in physical activity and exercise throughout their pregnancy (yoga, Pilates, walking, etc.) and especially with trained professionals and staff who are educated on what type of physical exercise would best benefit a woman throughout her pregnancy and what will ultimately help her out when it’s time to deliver, they need access to good environments and practices that are created to benefit them and make their experiences easier, safer, and more comfortable. And they absolutely do not need to be required to pay an arm and a leg in hospital fees to have a child in the United States.

We need better health care that better accommodates women in the process of conceiving, women going through their pregnancy, women who are laboring and delivering, and women who are still alive during post partum healing. All these things should be requirements. All of these things should be covered by insurance. The issue is so large that women are having to travel outside of the United States to give birth to their babies and come back so that they could have better care and a better recovery and overall survival rate. It’s expensive to hire a midwife, let alone a dula for spiritual guidance and support. All women should have access to midwives and dulas and there needs to be more women in the birthing industry. We know that traditional midwifery practices and practices that were created to better aid women and were more effective and atomically accurate have been let go of or replaced.

Children are expensive, motherhood is expensive, and at this current moment we have mothers who are going through their pregnancies and post partum without proper resources and care and we have children coming into this world constantly and repeatedly to environments, parents, circumstances, etc. that aren’t financially, emotionally, or physically fit or stable to give them good lives. We need to stop having children at such a rate whilst we shift our focus to advocating for better health care and support for our women. Having a child is a privilege, some people may not agree, but just because we love them does not mean that we should all be having them because at this time we do not have the proper resources to bring them into this world correctly or provide for them.

There’s a lot going on here and a lot we need to advocate for. And those who are chronically ill or have been intense physical ailments and pregnant women who are giving birth to babies are just the tip of the iceberg. This isn’t even including the chronically mentally ill or those with developmental disabilities whose families have to pay thousands of dollars just to get them what they need. Since we’re changing the world and there is a shift happening, it’s time we start having the right conversations at the right time. There’s no time to change the world like today.

(For those who don't know what this is about, see the previous question, re a small press whose guidelines state that you have to buy one of their books in order for them to consider your submission, which I didn't know about, so this poster has kindly given more info. Links below.)

I looked up the discussion and also took a peek at the publisher's submission guidelines.

I dunno, I mean, personally, I think it's a red flag. Kinda sketch, and yes, akin to a "reading fee" -- if the only way they will even look at your work is if you buy something, and one of the somethings is the owner's own book, it's like... welp. Money is, in all traditional publishing scenarios, meant to flow TOWARD the writer, so I do understand why someone's hackles might go up at being asked to pay for a product in order to even be considered. And how do you know you will be considered, actually? What if they just take the money, then put your submission in the bin? At least with a regular publisher, if they decline, or even just put your submission in the bin, you haven't LOST MONEY for the privilege.

From the publisher's perspective, I can understand it, though -- -[note I didn't say LIKE it, just understand it!] -- presumably they are very much a "shoestring" operation, primarily funded from the owner's pocket; it takes a lot of time and resources to consider submissions, people need to be paid for their labor, etc. And this would, as somebody says in the discussion, cut down on submissions, "weed out" people who aren't serious, and presumably insure that people who are submitting have at least an inkling of the kinds of books they publish.

They DO have a work-around where you can plead poverty and not have to buy the book, which is something at least. It would be better if they also allowed buying an e-book, given that they seem to be located in the UK and shipping costs may be prohibitive to other countries. Obviously it would be better still if they didn't have this policy at all, but, it's a free country, it's not illegal or even immoral, it's just... odd. If THEY don't mind being seen as odd, then I guess I don't mind either.

Caveat emptor: If it bothers you, there's an elegant solution, which is not to submit to them. If, on the other hand, you have done your research, read some of their books (from the library or whatever) and loved them, think they are doing a swell job and the company ethos matches your own and you think your book would be potentially just right for them, and you don't mind spending money on a book (when the book might be all you get out of it) -- well, go for it, just have your eyes wide open in case there are OTHER red flags, too.
