Last Greek Mythology post before I go back to my normal content
I need a show where the Greek Gods are living in todays world, but not like in pjo. I want them to live like normal people. Imagine:
-Aphrodite: *coming home at 3 am tiptoeing*
Hephaestus, who is used to it at this point, without even looking up from his extremely complicated Lego: soooo, how’s Ares?
-Hera, sobbing: he cheated on me again…
Hestia: what?? Again??? How can you be sure?
Hera: I went through his phone…
-Hermes (who is ceo of all emailing companies), picking up his phone: tf do you want?
Apollo: calm down! what’s the Netflix password?
Hermes: idk ask Dionysus, he’s the one who hacked Hades’ account
-Artemis, leading a strike for climate: fuck with nature and my dad will fuck your mom
Poseidon, every time he meets someone: Hi I am Ariel’s grandfather😃 What about you??

I tried making a fun character within @deinocheirus awesome and zany Graeco-Roman world!
This is Flora!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was the goddess of flowers and a nymph of the Islands of the Blessed (Elysium). She was the wife of Zephyros the West-Wind and she is known as Chloris to the Greeks and she was a pretty important deity to the romans and I think she is interesting!
According to Ovid she was the one behind multiple figured in mythology turning into flowers and plants - "I first made a flower from Therapnean blood [Hyacinthus the larkspur flower], and its petal still inscribes the lament. You, too, narcissus, have a name in tended gardens, unhappy in your undivided self. Why mention Crocus, Attis or Cinyras' son, from whose wounds I made a tribute soar?’"And that she helped Juno conceive Mars (without the help of Jupiter), and in return he gave her a grand position in Romulus!
So taking from that, in this world she seems to view the lives of the gods as her personal soap opera or telenovela even intervening to save some of her favourite characters and avoid a sad storyline...by turning them into plants (basically infecting them with some of her clones, more on that below) Her eyes can shoot out and branch into different segments to give her a view of everything around her stationary position, she likes to watch lovers.
Tumblr media
She tends to stick and attach herself to objects like a barnacle to a ship, usually bigger gods and monsters too and feed off of their blood.
According to Ovid "as she talks, her lips breathe spring roses" which I like to interpret as her making smaller clone children of herself that Grow up and do the same, spreading like an infestation (usually to the annoyance and irritation of the host). She's completely sessile and relies on her host for travel, she's happily content with this and besides sticking onto folks going on with their personal lives makes for juicy hot gossip
Tumblr media
Her general starfish/flower form can fold into a shape similar to the head of a rabbit head...a very, very toothy rabbit head (as seen in the little paper mock-up i made below) they are her favorite snac- I mean sacred animal. It's not uncommon to see humans and mortals walking around with these overgrown "rabbit heads" it's usually an attempt for a fat overgrown Flora to stick and stay onto her small host
Tumblr media
Her design is based on Lice/Ticks, barnacles, Starfish, flowers, a stereotypical southern meemaw and my aunt Flora. She likes cigarettes, soap operas and romance novels with a pretty blonde fella on it!
My drawings are a little crude, but I really had a lot of fun! Check out @dimetrodone's work their art is awesome, like something from a whacky 90s cartoon!!

The Bullies Clique in Bully/Canis Canem Edit is goofy like the entire group besides Russell can be summed up as:
- The fruity, not closeted theater kid that reads Manga and watches Soap operas and wants to be an actor. (Probably the most normal one, let's be honest.)
- The possible paranoid schizophrenic who hates shoes and thinks he's smarter than he actually is. (Also the only mature one.)
- The probably on-the-spectrum kid whose special interest might be martial arts and ninjas (Probably likes Naruto too).
- The loud closeted LGBT kid.
- The OTHER loud closeted LGBT kid. (Daddy issues edition.)
- The OTHER probably on-the-spectrum kid whose special interest might be BULLYING PEOPLE and was traumatized as a young child by being force fed junebugs by his cousin.
That entire group is held up by Russell in the same way Atlas holds up the Heavens in Greek mythology.

Im not even in the lore Olympus fandom I keep up with jack shit and only read it when the adds or drama drown my feed to soothe the algorithm but I do find the criticism posts I see about it kinda weak and overblown. Author doesn't research! I've seen a lot more accurate references to actually mythology here than I've seen in -rolls out extremely long list- Percy Jackson, Hercules (Disney), the Gods school 90% of media that references Greek mythology- also mythological gods make poorly relatable characters when all prior stories of them are from thousands of years past. Author likes age gap- Gonna be real so does 90% of fanfic writers and most shoujo but hey unlike say Card Captor Sakura that had an elementary student dating at least theyre both adults and act like it so kinda moot. SA glorification....No it's not this one is a stretch considering Apollo's crime is the driving force for him being on EVERYONES shit list whether they know the details or not he is hated because he openly strives for someone who clearly is not interested. It's a frequent source of distress for Perse and those close to her AND Apollo (i.e. Artemis) it's not trivialized at all nor is it glorified. The art- not really my taste and fair if you don't like it but also consider you thinking someone's art is ugly is not a valid reason to drag someone chill.
Like I do not get the hate Lore Olympus at worse is a mid romance drama, like soap opera camp it's not the fucking testament to sin and bigotry people keep frothing at the mouth acting like it is.
oh my god THANK YOU

i'm a casual reader of lore olympus. i enjoy it passively for what it is and check tumblr after updates just to ruminate on it a bit or catch the thoughts of other fans. i have no intention of talking about lore olympus at length or even really using this blog because, honestly? lore olympus is not that serious. it's a soap opera inspired by greek myths with a pseudo modern aesthetic. it's campy, cookie cutter, and sure as fuck not the place i would go to to get a fresh or faithful take on the persephone/hades myth. i mean it's a webtoon for fuck's sake. a cursory look at the art style and marketing will tell you all you need to know about how deep this story's going to be.
And yet. the tags on this godforsaken website are absolutely overrun with anti lo / lo critical hot takes expressing the oh-so-novel idea that lo isn't very good, to which i say... no shit? the art's inconsistent/disproportionate. writing is often mid. characterization is... ok, i'll show my hand here. I think a lot of people's problems with the characters themselves is just a fundamental disagreement on interpretation, because the greek gods are by and large colossal assholes and can be twisted to be as saintly or sinister as you want them to be. that particular point is just a subjective "noooo my greek god/goddess blorbo was done so dirty" without taking anything else (such as creative decisions) into consideration. but i digress.
my ultimate point here is the pseudo intellectuals getting worked up over a webtoon soap opera are fucking annoying. greek mythology has been adapted TO DEATH because it is the most well known mythology in human history. if you don't enjoy lo there is nothing wrong with that. after all, as i already said, it's not that good - it's the equivalent of trash tv. so why the everloving fuck are so many people so pressed and dedicated to criticizing lo? literally just go find a different adaptation. lo is hardly a cultural juggernaut forever tainting the high-brow sophistication of greek mythology (lmao) and your constant need to fill the tags with criticism is more indicative of how emotionally invested you are in this comic than the actual quality of the comic itself. i swear to god almost all these posts i see average under a 100 notes. lo barely has a fandom presence on tumblr. the fuck are you all doing.
anyway *steps off my soapbox*

I don't like how TCW took away the classic, fairytale elements of Anakin and Padmé so they could be more "relatable" as a couple. That was neither necessary nor did it make any sense for their romance because that was never the point of them to begin with. They were the type to quite literally jump off a bridge for each other, call each other sweet names, always wanting to be close, the passion, the dreamlikeness, etc. They were more of the mythological, fairytale, classic literature type of couple. The ideal couple that, due to numerous unfortunate circumstances, it was doomed. Some people also argue that they would not have lasted, but they don't get that the rules that apply in the real world don't always have to apply in a fantasy setting. I've been seeing this kind of "remake" of fantastical, classic, fairytale(-esque) couples so they seem more realistic and modern, and it just saddens me (which is also why most Disney LA remakes also piss me off). It's because of what that series's portrayal of Anakin and Padmé that people either have this "bff" conception of their romance or that Padmé was always annoyed by him when she would have thrown away everything for him (and viceversa, ofc, I mean lol). Smh
I agree. TCW for me just goes against the original authorial intent. Although GL did make a lot of the decisions, he was not alone and ofc eventually Filoni and co took over. But when he started out he always said he didn't care about fans liking it. It was always about the story he intended to tell, whether they liked it or not. And that's so admirable to have a story be told just for itself and not for fanservice and it shows GL was passionate about it and he just had to retcon or brainstorm more because of the backlash. He always said SW is a homage to all the movies he loved. It's reminiscent of the cheesy soaps he grew up with and in the PT appreciation video I shared recently, it shows so many scenes are similar to older films. GL was even aware of the dialogue and how it wouldn't resonate with modern audiences but he needed it to fit in a specific style.
It's funny how fans appreciate how "classic" the OT is but expect the PT to be hyper modern when it should be even more rooted in mythology. The OT is fairytale-like too. I mean when you think about it the big bad is defeated by the power of love and Luke just forgives a man who killed so many people because he's his father who he doesn't even know? Vader even goes easy on him and he never actually is threatened by him. It's not very realistic either nor is it for Obi Wan to be hiding out in Tattooine and waiting to hand over a magic quest to Luke but it does work in fairytales because it is the hero's journey - like the prequels is similar to a Greek tragedy unfolding in three parts. It's supposed to be cheesy with morals and messages and recurring themes. And without any war when the galaxy is at its golden age so to speak, of course Anidala would be more of a Shakespearean romance with a dash of tragedy mixed in it. If GL can call them space Romeo and Juliet, he is acknowledging they are young and naive and impulsive and the audience isn't suppose to view them as ideals or think of RL relationships to be similar. None of the OT characters are particularly complex either and the ideologies are even more black and white. Ultimately, it's the message about family and love and yes it is very simplistic and fairytaleish because it's suppose to feel good. I don't get the point in trying to make it modern and realistic when it was never supposed to be one. It's space opera and fantasy - not science fiction. And tbh TCW makes the characters even more generic and westernized than they ever were in the prequels. Don't get me started on Chadakin and Girlboss!Padme (or discount Han and Leia) when they were much more imperfect, multifaceted characters in the movies while seamlessly fitting in with the fairytale-ish narrative.

Hello! Just wanted to say that i love the posts youve been doing on Lore Olympus so far. I personally havent fully read through the whole thing yet but ive noticed that there are a lot of webtoons that have uhh how should i say.. poor writing? (a certain other popular webtoon comes to mind) That gets really popular for some reason or other. I tend to stay away from them for the most part but these analyses have me kind of interested, maybe ill try reading lore olympus (more for a reference to improve my writing than anything)
Webtoons has a lot of stuff with very bad writing. But hey, the world is filled with stuff with terrible writing because, despite what it seems, writing a story isn't easy. It looks easy because eh, what's so complicated? You just have to come up with an idea, then put it down and voilà, masterpiece. But as a writer yourself, you know it's not as easy as it seems.
The worst that could happen is when a story with shitty writing pretends to be taken seriously or to be the new icon of whatever. I appreciate much more a story with awful writing that makes fun of itself or makes stupid decision after stupid decision, to the point it exits the realm of writing and enters in the realm of absurd.
For example, Marry My Husband, another webcomic I read: that story was such a soap opera it went beyond the mere definition. It went from "bitchy friend steals my man" to "my friend is a fucking psychopath who commits murder like nothing". It went from "stereotypical serious sexy guy likes me" to "my angelic father with his heavenly taxi saves this guy because he's the right one". How am I supposed to take this stuff seriously? Of course I take it as a joke and I was even invested in this shit because it's so absurd, I want to see how far it will go!
And, honestly, I love stories that are so bad, that they become good. Lore Olympus has almost reached that point: I stopped considering the character Greek gods (because they're not), but just characters. And if you detach them from mythology, the whole story is much less infuriating and more entertaining.
Sure, it's entertaining for the wrong reason, but still: at least, it helps you understand what you should NOT do, if you want to be taken seriously XD

for the rainbow universe, what are the new tropes caused by this situation for stories in this world? soap opera cliches, classic narratives, harmful but widely accepted messages, etc
in some mythologies, there is some significance ascribed to the concept of a "complete soulmate," or a person who fulfills all of the colors
a notable example would be Zeus and Hera of greek mythology
In modern western civilization this gets some pearl-clutching in the same way we irl get pearl clutching over Zeus and Hera being siblings and also married.
on the more modern end, shipping culture is absolutely insane. please imagine with me an ao3 with seven different relationship symbols with varying amounts of overlap, PLUS non-soulmate versions (so the marker for orange and non-soulmate friends would be different), PLUS qprs. chaos
ship wars become complex maps of arrows and symbols with a minimum of six connections per person, vicious debates on whether a ship is Orange or Blue, whole essays about what Violet means, arguing in the comments of fics who portray violets "incorrectly"
chaos, pure chaos. what i would give to peek for the barest moment into a tag wranglers day in this universe

For real though Circe is overrated in a USian culture crisis who want to make every female woman a "badass" but choose to glorify the toxic ones instead. Unfortunately Circe will have a movie so...we will see how it will turn out..
When i said i wanted a Greek mythology movie I didn't mean based on a retelling or a video game...
Greek film companies stop making cheap soap operas and start funding new movies like Iphigenia or Elektra did.
You're right, Circe was getting a movie ;;-;;
I'm so, SO scared of what's gonna happen after that. Odysseus getting MORE hate, i guess. If people are gonna shit on him, at least do it with the sources lmao :')
Can't wait for another story of a woman (Circe) getting SA and then hurting everyone due to that !!! This is just Dark Medieval Fantasy tropes all over again. As you say, it's so easy to pick Elektra or Iphigenia and adapt the original works to a movie, and that's it, no retellings, NO retellings. Just pick up the original work and move on.
Like, what, just because Miller's Circe says that Odysseus is horrible do we need to despise him? Just because an USAnian says we need to stop loving a figure older than the entire USA? What do we do? Destroy Odysseus' sculpture that is in the current Ithaka, because according to Miller's Circe he's actually a horrible human being?

I’ve always liked the idea of classical literature but haven’t read many classic novels. What are your favorites?
Also, since you like Shirley Jackson, have you ever read Lamb to the Slaughter by Ronald Dahl? I was OBSESSED when I first read it!
Oh bestie, you don’t even know the can of worms you’ve opened 🤩 this is my area, let’s hit it!
A Room with a View, E.M. Forster - I ALWAYS recommend this book to people who are looking to get into classics. It’s quick and accessible, and the overall themes are evergreen—plus, the romance is gorgeous!
David Copperfield, Charles Dickens - I usually recommend people start with A Christmas Carol, but since it’s seasonal I’d recommend David Copperfield. It’s long, but really entertaining and easily broken into sections!
Invisible Man, Ralph Ellison - This one’s tonally pretty dark and complex, but absolutely essential in my opinion. I’m not sure if it’s technically considered a “classic” but who cares, it’s a beautiful read!
The Picture of Dorian Gray - Totally necessary if only for the Victorian drama of it all. I’m always shocked when someone tells me they’ve never read this, it’s like a soap opera!
The Damned Thing, Ambrose Bierce - A staple of the American Gothic genre for my spooky babes :)
Ceremony, Leslie Marmon Silko - Another AP Lit fave that never gets the time of day in classics conversations. The storytelling is nonlinear, which makes it a really interesting and compelling read!
Persuasion, Jane Austen - Underrated classic from the queen of pining. In my opinion this is her most emotional and thought-provoking work, I recommend this to everyone (especially the ones who think they don’t like Austen).
Lud-in-the-Mist, Hope Mirlees - Maybe not a classic but it should be! It’s a direct response to the masculine, colonial ideas of classic fantasy that references Freud, Greek mythology, and Shakespeare!
I haven’t read Lamb to the Slaughter but I’m always down for a creepy good time, I’ll have to put it on my list!
Enjoy bestie :)

What’s some modern day? cartoons/tv shows that you think Percy would like?
I feel like he’d like shows similar to Grabity Fall or The Owl House. He’d like the sort of mystery puzzle theme they have, and he’d be pretty into shows that have some intense world building like Arcane.
We know he likes to learn (obviously) so any show that makes him use his brain or gives him new things to explore he would potentially like.
I'm going to go ahead and apologize in advance, anon, because I'm definitely not the best person to ask this! I only really know one modern cartoon, and to me, modern TV is anything within the last 20 years. 🤣
That being said, I'll do my best with what I do know. I can't say much about cartoons, but as for other TV shows...
I think Percy would like trivia shows (like Cash Cab or Brain Games) and cooking shows (like Best Leftovers Ever!). He would probably like renovation shows as well (like Flip or Flop or Dream Home Makeover), because he could learn skills and tricks to remodel his own home.
I think he'd enjoy shows like the new Percy Jackson series that’s coming out too, because he clearly enjoys Greek Mythology (since he named his owl Hermes). I also think he'd be interested in shows like BBC Merlin (because he'd be able to see the muggles' interpretation of the wizard's origin story) and Designated Survivor (because he'd enjoy the political intrigue and government policies).
I can't help but picture Percy secretly enjoying soap operas/reality TV shows as well. 🤣 He'd never admit it, but they're his guilty pleasure! (Let's be honest, Percy can be dramatic from time to time, so he'd definitely enjoy the intensity of these shows.)
What do you guys think?
Thanks for the ask! 😊
