The case against cleansing
-by Semiramis Magpie
Tumblr media
Cleansing a new tarot deck with incense smoke.
Us witches have an almost compulsive thing for cleansing. Feeling bad? Cleanse. New tool? Clense. Long trip? Cleanse. Buying herbs? Cleanse. Finished ritual? Cleanse. New moon? Cleanse.
And, I mean. I’m not one to speak. I’ve done two major posts talking about alternative cleansing (that you can see here and here), but after seeing some people talking about when to cleanse, I thought I’d say something about it.
Here’s the thing: You don’t need to cleanse *all* the time.
Cleansing gets rid of accumulated energy in a certain object, place, or person. It restores it to its original state, to a point of neutrality.
This also means that cleansing anything you’ve charged will get rid of that extra energetic boost. Sun charged crystals become simple crystals, moon water becomes simple water, etc.
Tumblr media
I sun charged my Art Nouveau tarot deck before I started using it.
So it’s important to note that while cleansing is fundamental and useful, sometimes it’s not necessary and even not recommendable.
Instances in which you should definitely not cleanse are:
When acquiring an antique: cleansing it will make it as if it where brand new (energy wise). So there’s no point on in being an antique. TRUST YOUR INTUITION. If you bought/found/got the thing because it called to you, believe you can handle its energy. Don’t cleanse “just to be sure”.
Tumblr media
I found this old dagger/letter opener and didn’t cleanse it. Instead, I bound it to me and now I use it as my athame.
When something gets passed down to you: Inherited objects carry a history. Like in the previous case, you should try to hold onto that energy. However, in this scenario you already have an idea of what the item’s past was like, so you can choose to let go of it or not.
Tumblr media
This ink bottle and calligraphy pen belonged to my grandmother when she was in elementary school back in the 1940s. Cleansing them would get rid of her influence and they’d just be old writing instruments.
Divination tools: sometimes divination tools have their own energy, and unless someone else has touched them, cleaning the slate is unnecessary. Arguably, our tools grow with experience, like us. By cleansing them, they go back to the beginning. This is why some witches never allow anyone to touch their tools.
Tumblr media
I found this old, rusty key, and I use it during my bone readings. I don’t cleanse it since I don’t let anyone else touch it. I feel it has a history, and a personality that cleansing will simply erase.
Working with body parts and even plants: when the past of the dead object is relevant, cleansing it defeats the purpose. A cleansed cat skull doesn’t carry the essence of that cat, it’s just generic, a random cat skull. No history, no story. This is especially important to remember when doing bone readings. Cleansing (not the same as cleaning) the bones strips away the portion of the soul they belonged to. We DON’T cleanse bones for this reason. In fact, some witches believe that bones are the only divination tools that are safe to be handled by others because they’re not ours to begin with. Every bone reading is a favor asked to a long gone life. If the soul has an issue with whomever is handling it, then the bones simply won’t answer their questions.
Tumblr media
Pieces of my bones collection.
Ask yourself if cleansing is necessary before doing it. What do you expect will come out of a cleanse? Will it improve the status of the item?
This also applies to places, including haunted places. Is the entity doing any harm? Why are you kicking it out?
Sometimes, preexisting energies will bring a lot to the table. Let yourself trust the influence of the ones that came before you. Instead of cleansing the item, try re-purposing or transforming the energy.
Summarizing: Cleansing, good. Cleansing too much, missing opportunities.
If you’ve found my tips helpful, consider donating to my ko-fi! All donations will be used to help my aunt hire a lawyer that will put her abusive ex husband jail!

does anyone know any particular deities and or forces associated with magpies? the last year or so im seeing magpies at least once a month, often more tbh and it's always when i need a little extra strength or if im focusing particularly hard on something and whilst i always greet them id like to know if it's just an odd cosmic happening or someone/something trying to send a message

While looking out of the window a magpie flew over with a big twig in its beak. It felt like it was looking me in the eye. Then it jumped a little bit around, put the twig on that white box and flew back into its tree. Does this mean anything? I don’t want to go so far as calling it an offering, but... it really feels like a present. Sadly I‘m at work so I can’t run outside and get the twig, but if it’s still there in the evening? I‘m gonna take it with me, I think.

This site sucks so I can't even find my own post about making the choice to personally archive the posts that matter to you, but here's me personally archive the tumblr posts that have mattered the most to me over the last few years.
Ahem. Stored in a binder I previously used as a prop for a Halloween costume.
Tumblr media
So maybe I have to change the cover a lil' bit. That's future me's problem.
I've got a bunch of stuff in plastic dividers I saved from school, including @recoil-operated's $12 mead post, which I had to chase around tumblr for hours before I found a full version of.
Tumblr media
Other highlights include:
Tumblr media
@windvexer's FUBAR ritual post, which I also had to chase across the internet
Tumblr media
As well as @a-magpie-witchling's grandmother's advice, which has been appreciated and memorialized.
I also have recipes like @gallusrostromegalus's Jesus tea and @stuffinfluffcooking's butterscotch cinnamon pie, and the Norwegian Christmas butter squares recipe, which may be from @locusimperium? My printer absolutely destroyed the url so I am guessing.
But yeah, the internet is finite and people delete their blogs all the time. Take matters into your own hands and archive whatever you can archive now, before it disappears. Data is lost so easily, but a binder stays pretty resolutely where you leave it.
And if you find the post about preserving lemons in honey as a cold remedy, let me know. I haven't found that sucker in ages.

My spell for employment and interview success seems to be working well! Huge epic thanks to @a-magpie-witchling for guidance and support! I used the chariot, two of cups, and ace of coins tarot cards, incense and prayer paper from Hong Kong, two pennies (one from 2017 and one from 1918), cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and pepper, and a green colored pencil to write my intentions and sigil on the prayer paper. I also used yellow and white threads to tie it all together. I recharged it tonight. 💜💜💜

Childhood Magick
I realised that a lot of what I was told when I was little was almost witchy. There are so many stories that we tell children that’s basically different bits of magick, even if they’re only simple myths and legends. So, here’s a small list of all the magick things I was told when I was younger.
- “Don’t step on the cracks in the pavement, you’ll get sucked in.”
- “Those rocks are trolls. They were charmed by a witch and now they’re stuck, if you annoy them then they’ll curse you.”  ((there were rocks in my grandparents’ house that looked like people, it was weird and that’s what my granddad used to say to get us to stop climbing on them))
- The only way to see leprachauns is to drink a lot of Guiness and go to the woods. If you catch one then they’ll grant you three wishes. ((drunk people wandering around some woods looking for magic ginger men?? not a great plan.))
- “Faries live in mushrooms and make dresses out of bluebells.”
- “If you eat carrots you’ll see in the dark.” ((if you eat too many you grow rabbit ears though- logic.))
- “Singing to plants makes them happy.” ((this one’s true, talk to your plants people))
- “If you want to know the time, blow the seeds off a dandelion. If it takes 2 blows then it’s 2 Oclock, if it takes 5 blows then it’s 5 Oclock. etc. etc.”
- “Praying to St. Anthony ((the patron saint of lost things- weirdly also my dad’s name)) will help you find what you’ve lost.”
- “If you don’t leave all of your bed sheets tucked in at night, the fairies will take you away and replace you with one of their own.” ((this scared the eff out of me when I was little. BTW THIS DOESN’T WORK- there’s actual ways to protect children from changlings, but this isn’t one of them. It was my mum trying to avoid making our beds every morning))
- Salmon makes you smarter ((in the myth of Finn MacCool he eats a salmon and gains all of the world’s knowledge- no i’m not making that up, it’s an irish tale. also- wtf ireland, that makes no sense???))
- If a black cat walks towards you it’s bad luck, if it walks away then it’s good luck.
- 7 years bad luck if you break a mirror.
- If you tempt fate, ie “the plane won’t crash” you have to knock on wood. ((apparently, if you didn’t have any wood, you’d have to knock your head- because that makes sense. wood= my head??. yuup))
- The wishbone of a chicken! You put your pinky finger on one side of the bone, someone else does the same on the oposite side. You both make a wish and pull, if you get the biggest piece then your wish will come true.
- If you see one magpie you have to say “good morning mr Magpie” and salute him, or you’ll have bad luck. It comes from the old rhyme “one for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told.” ((genuinely still do this, can’t tell if it’s a weird habit or it the magpies actually get offended if I don’t))
- If you blow out all of the candles on your birthday cake then a wish will come true.
- If you pick a dandelion while it’s still a yellow flower, you’ll wet the bed that night.
- Spilled salt? Throw some over your left shoulder to banish Satan. ((don’t eff this up, if you throw it over your right shoulder you murder your guardian angel))
- If someone sneezes you have to say ‘bless you’ because when you sneeze your soul falls out, and Satan can possess you. Saying ‘bless you’ stops him.
- A horse shoe brings good luck, but it has to be hung upwards ( in the U shape) or all the luck will fall out
- If you shiver, it means that someone’s walking over the patch of dirt that will be your grave. (( i get spasms a lot, so when they happen i say ‘satan’s walking over my grave’ because they’re basically demonic shivers. it makes me laugh))
- If you haven’t taken down your christmas decorations by the 6th of January (the last day of the 12 days of christmas) you have to leave one decoration up all year long. ((if you forget again the next year you have to leave another one up, while keeping the last one up too- our house is constantly full of effing christmast decorations because we have no control over our lives))
In summary, parents are weird. Also some of this is really bizzare and scary, why did they think it was ok to tell us this????

What is a Dæmon?
Disclaimer: As it always is in witchcraft, this depends on the witch you ask. This is my personal interpretation of what a dæmon is and what it means to have one. Also I’m in one fucking big hurry, gotta go meet stranded family. So I’ll probably edit this later but I didn’t want to keep accumulating asks about it!
I tend to go down the Pullman path, and if asked, I would say the dæmon is the soul of the person simply shaped as another creature, all of what someone is plus what they need to be.
Mostly everyone would choose to see their dæmon as an animal, and I think it’s the most direct and honest approach to them.
Simply put, a dæmon is like a combination between what you would normally consider a familiar, a shadow self, an anima/animus, a totem, a patronus, a spirit animal, a fylgja, your soul, and your conscience all together (without the cultural background or connotations). It’s a non-appropriative term that is used to describe your soul in the shape of an animal.
As I’ve said before, I choose to use pop culture references sometimes to avoid cultural appropriation. The concept of the dæmon as I choose to understand is made by Phillip Pullman and then modified to my own needs.
A dæmon is the externalized visualization of your own spirit in the form of an animal. This animal changes as you grow up, and settles permanently the day you mature and become an adult (at around 14 to 20 years old). It can change again, someday, after experiencing extreme trauma or an event that would transform who we are in the deepest part of ourselves altogether.
Personally I have a bear dæmon (Aeneas), a magpie familiar (Semiramis), and a cat fylgja (Samhain). They don’t hold the same importance nor help with the same thing. I don’t really communicate in many ways with my familiar or my fylgja, I just know they exist.
However Aeneas is an integral part of my everyday life. I talk to him constantly, when things get overwhelming he helps me clear my mind.
I visualize Aeneas walking by my side, warding off bad spirits, giving me strength…
In my loneliest times, Aeneas never leaves me alone.
How to reveal your Dæmon?
1.       The Gender
The gender is probably the easiest part of the dæmon’s identity. Usually it’ll be the opposite of the person. I’m female, so Aeneas is male.
Some consider, however, that this rule doesn’t always apply to people. It’s been said that LGBT+ people can have a dæmon that’s their same assigned gender.
This is, I’ve found, especially true for non-cisgender people, not so much for gay, lesbian, bi, etc. people. And sometimes when someone is gender fluid or NB or something along those lines, the dæmon will most likely reflect it. Animals that change their coats across the seasons, animals that change their genders, animals that are more than one gender at once.
One of the most emotive dæmon reveals I’ve been a part of was uncovering a gyandromorphic butterfly for a bigender person. We cried for like half an hour.
2.       The Name
The name is arguably just a tiny bit easier than revealing the animal itself. When I found Aeneas’ name it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was minding my own business when someone said it and I opened my eyes wide and whispered “that’s… that’s it! That’s his name!”
If you don’t know the name, neither does the dæmon. After all, they know just as much as you do, they just tend to interact different with that knowledge.
My best recommendation is: don’t hurry it.
3.       The Animal
This is it. The big question. What’s my animal?
Well, there’s not one way of uncovering a dæmon. The reveal can take years. Aeneas, for example. I’ve known he was a bear since 2012 but I still don’t know what kind of bear. A polar? A grizzly? Shit, maybe I’ll never know!
When I do dæmon reveals we agree from the get go that I can’t point out an exact animal. One of the most recent reveals I did uncovered just that the dæmon was in the mustelidae family!
It can take years, and attempt after attempt.
But I do maintain firmly that discovering your dæmon must be a mind blowing experience.
You can doubt at first, but when you do sense it you’ll go “oh… oh! OOOOH! YES! THAT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!”.
You’ll feel it. Once you process it there will be no hesitation whatsoever. If a few weeks later you feel like it’s not your animal, then it never was your dæmon.
My method for revealing a dæmon involves a LOT of question and several days of narrowing them down.
You can do it yourself without help, but, again, it can take years.
If you’re reading this, the chances that you’re a bird dæmon is really fucking high. People that care about these things are usually bird people. Someone with an ant or a primate soul you wouldn’t catch dead trying to find out who their dæmon is.
Mostly always you’ll find that there will be three animals you’ll end up saying “yes, that’s EXACTLY my dæmon,” although it won’t be so in two of those cases (and deep down, you’ll know it).
The first one will be the animal you want to be. This first level is encompassed almost solely of beautiful, cute, or badass animals. Yes, we all want to be a stag, an eagle, a raven, a wolf, a lion, or a cat. But… most of the times we aren’t. We just are animals we don’t find ‘cool’, because it’s… it’s us. It’s banal.
Only once I’ve unveiled a tiger, never a lion, never an eagle. I’ve unveiled I think… two or three wolves. Wolves, btw, tend to belong to order enforcers or soldiers.
There are ant dæmon. And frogs, and mosquitoes, and all kinds of ‘ugly’ things. Sometimes people aren’t happy. Once I unveiled a tortoise and the person almost yelled at me. Another time I unveiled a hyena and the person basically told me to go fuck myself and then a few weeks later came and said I was right and that they had to learn to live with it. This animal usually represents who we want to be, instead of who we are.
And of course, there comes the ricochet effect.
The second animal is usually the exact opposite. It’s where the “bad” dæmon start to show up. People focus solely on their defects and the animals that they hate are the ones that they think will define them.
Eventually you reach a balance. And that balance is your dæmon.
A few pointers, though: trauma survivors tend to have dæmons with means to carry them away and escape or with the means to defend themselves. Usually a survivor has wings or claws or venom.
The MBTI personality test is one hell of a useful tool, although it doesn’t have the last word.
If anyone is interested, I do dæmon reveals (for as long as it takes, until we pin it down) for $25 in my shop and I also trade them for goods or services! It tends to take at least two or three days of constant personal questions, but it can extend up to months! So please don’t hire the service if you don’t have the time or the patience!
If you cannot afford to have a reveal, check out the daemon forum! Their method and mine aren’t the same, but they’ll surely be able to help you! There are other daemonists who also perform reveals for free!
Happy unveiling!

✨ chronic pain relief spell bottle/jar ✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as some of you may know, I suffer from chronic pain in my chest. this can only really be permanently solved by surgery, and my parents have taken a loooong time in scheduling consultations and appointments and things like that. My pain had been acting up recently, so I decided to make a spell bottle inspired by @a-magpie-witchling to help! Amazingly enough, my parents scheduled the first consultation with the surgeon that same day!!
Ingredients (obviously you can swap/add/remove any!)
rosemary
thyme
white salt
cloves
basil
sage
amethyst
tiger’s eye
peridot
orange peels
eggshells
Tumblr media
Extra details!! (just some fun little additions I used to charge the bottle, you can pick and choose or just disregard!!)
added two sigils into the bottle, the first by @soulsigils and the second by @dreamy-kat
charged with two candles, one white, one green (you can choose either!! I just had both)
charged with amythest and black onyx crystals
sealed with the wax from the green candle
charged with the Sun tarot card and the Six of Wands card (my deck incorporated that and the Tower together but I’d not recommend using the Tower hhh)
charged it in the gorgeous springtime sunlight!
dedicated it to Asclepius and Apollo (you can use any god of health/healing/medicine of your choice!!!)
I hope this helps y’all!! It really helped me!! If you use it, please lmk how it goes!!

I just kept remembering @witches-ofcolor's post about printing out your witch books as I went searching for @recoil-operated's $12 mead post, because for a post that had been so ubiquitous, I was struggling to find a single copy of it, and yeah, what wouldn't I pay to have a copy of it in a binder somewhere? Printing can get pretty expensive, but my library sells printing services for ten cents a page, and that's more than what having certain resources on hand is worth.
So now I have my pagan-accessory posts in a file folder ready to print, mainly the ones I keep for recipes, including the mead post, @gallusrostromegalus's Jesus tea post, @a-magpie-witchling's Yeye posts (may she rest peacefully), @dua-yinepu's Egyptian Beer post and the pie recipe I was FINALLY ABLE TO SOURCE after years of looking unsuccessfully.
If anyone has a reblog copy of either the preserved lemons in honey post or the spiritvexer FUBAR list post and is willing to send a url my way, I would deeply appreciate it. It's hard to find a post with either a deactivated blog or no remembered text, but I've found that, with google, "any literal quote" site:www.tumblr.com -tagging can find most posts, but not all of them. Shoddy memory disease makes a fool of me yet ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Blessings!✨
