scandalous beauty: diahann carroll - an analysis

Diahann Carroll was a trailblazer for African-American women in Hollywood. A true Cancer, she was a captivating force of nature who had a combative spirit--a bruised but feisty character who was brave, authentic, took risks, and created her own lane for others to follow. Also, she had the Cancerian trait of warming to confrontation far more than compliments, and, true Cancer that she was, her life was full of it. Wildly beautiful, and assisted by her amazing talent, grace, class, and glamour, as well as her breathy, deep voice, the established recording artist debuted on the big screen in 1954’s Oscar-nominated all-black adaptation of Carmen Jones. She made history by being the first black woman to win a Tony Award. The first black queen of the small screen, she would also make television history with her role as a nurse on Julia, the enormously successful NBC sitcom that featured her as a war-widowed nurse raising a son. The pioneering role was a radical departure from her predecessors who typically played domestic workers and was credited with shattering stereotypes. In Dynasty, she was, in her words, “first black bitch on prime-time television.” A dynamic entertainer, she sang in nightclubs and on the Broadway stage, headlined in Las Vegas with her fourth husband, Vic Damone, and notched Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations. Carroll was nominated for a lead actress Oscar for her turn as a welfare mom in the 1974 comedy Claudine. She personified the new black woman. But her success was an entertainment industry rarity.

Diahann Carroll, according to astrotheme, was a Cancer sun and Aquarius moon. She was born Carol Diann Johnson in the Bronx on July 17, 1935, and raised in Harlem by her subway conductor father and homemaker mom. Doted on by her hard-working parents, she attended New York City's famed High School for the Performing Arts. At just 15 years old, began to model for magazines like Ebony, Tan and Jet. Carroll continued to participate in modeling and singing competitions throughout high school. She enrolled at New York University for college at 18, where she eventually won an opportunity on ABC’s Chance of a Lifetime show to appear as a regular performer at the popular Latin Quarter Nightclub in Manhattan. Carroll eventually dropped out of college to pursue her entertainment career and landed her film debut as a friend to the sultry lead character played by Dorothy Dandridge in Otto Preminger's Carmen Jones (1954). She went on to find success on Broadway, eventually transitioning to movies. In 1962 she won a best actress Tony award for the role created for her by revered composer Richard Rodgers in the musical No Strings. While in No Strings, Carroll had received anonymous death threats. In 1968, Julia aired the first episode of its three-year run on NBC. She said that many people were upset because they didn’t feel like it accurately portrayed what life was like for most African Americans during that time. In 1969, Carroll became the first black actress to win a Golden Globe award for Julia. She was also the first black actress to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy series for the show.

In 1974, Carroll landed her biggest success in the hit film Claudine, which told the story of a single welfare mother of six in Harlem who falls in love with the garbage man, played by James Earl Jones. Her next big break came as the stylish and catty Dominique Devereaux on the 1980s soap opera Dynasty. The role made Carroll the first African American to play a lead role on a primetime soap opera. She and her lawyers negotiated salary and percentage rights to her show at a time when that was practically unheard of for performers, especially African Americans and women. She had a storied love life, which included liaisons with Harry Belafonte, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., as well as a well-documented affair with the married Sidney Poitier (his side of the story) (her side of the story). She was married four times. Her father boycotted the ceremony for her first wedding, in 1956, to nightclub owner Monte Kay, which resulted in Carroll’s only child, Suzanne. She was engaged to British television host and producer David Frost, but the engagement was canceled. Her second marriage was to Las Vegas boutique owner Freddie Glusman, who was abusive; she then married academic Robert DeLeon, who spent too much of her money, before dying in a car crash; last came a union with singer Vic Damone, who loved golf more than life with her, and who she divorced in the 1990s.

One of television's premier African-American series stars, elegant actress, singer and recording artist Diahann Carroll was born Carol Diann (or Diahann) Johnson on July 17, 1935, in the Bronx, New York. The first child of John Johnson, a subway conductor, and Mabel Faulk Johnson, a nurse; music was an important part of her life as a child, singing at age six with her Harlem church choir. While taking voice and piano lessons, she contemplated an operatic career after becoming the 10-year-old recipient of a Metropolitan Opera scholarship for studies at New York's High School of Music and Art. As a teenager she sought modeling work but it was her voice, in addition to her beauty, that provided the magic and the allure. When she was 16, she teamed up with a girlfriend from school and auditioned for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts show using the more exotic sounding name of Diahann Carroll. She alone was invited to appear and won the contest. She subsequently performed on the daily radio show for three weeks. In her late teens, she began focusing on a nightclub career and it was here that she began formulating a chic, glamorous image. Another TV talent show appearance earned her a week's engagement at the Latin Quarter. Broadway roles for black singers were rare but at age nineteen, Diahann was cast in the Harold Arlen/Truman Capote musical "House of Flowers". Starring the indomitable Pearl Bailey, Diahann held her own quite nicely in the ingénue role. While the show itself was poorly received, the score was heralded and Diahann managed to introduce two song standards, "A Sleepin' Bee" and "I Never Has Seen Snow", both later recorded by Barbra Streisand. In 1954 she and Ms. Bailey supported a riveting Dorothy Dandridge as femme fatale Carmen Jones (1954) in an all-black, updated movie version of the Georges Bizet opera "Carmen." Diahann later supported Ms. Dandridge again in Otto Preminger's cinematic retelling of Porgy and Bess (1959). During this time she also grew into a singing personality on TV while visiting such late-nite hosts as Jack Paar and Steve Allen and performing. Unable to break through into the top ranks in film (she appeared in a secondary role once again in Paris Blues (1961), a Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward vehicle), Diahann returned to Broadway. She was rewarded with a Tony Award for her exceptional performance as a fashion model in the 1962 musical "No Strings," a bold, interracial love story that co-starred Richard Kiley. Richard Rodgers, whose first musical this was after the death of partner Oscar Hammerstein, wrote the part specifically for Diahann, which included her lovely rendition of the song standard "The Sweetest Sounds." By this time she had already begun to record albums ("Diahann Carroll Sings Harold Arlen" (1957), "Diahann Carroll and Andre Previn" (1960), "The Fabulous Diahann Carroll" (1962). Nightclub entertaining filled up a bulk of her time during the early-to-mid 1960s, along with TV guest appearances on Carol Burnett, Judy Garland, Andy Williams, Dean Martin and Danny Kaye's musical variety shows. Little did Diahann know that in the late 1960s she would break a major ethnic barrier on the small screen. Though it was nearly impossible to suppress the natural glamour and sophistication of Diahann, she touchingly portrayed an ordinary nurse and widow struggling to raise a small son in the series Julia (1968). Despite other Black American actresses starring in a TV series (i.e., Hattie McDaniel in "Beulah"), Diahann became the first full-fledged African-American female "star" -- top billed, in which the show centered around her lead character. The show gradually rose in ratings and Diahann won a Golden Globe award for "Best Newcomer" and an Emmy nomination. The show lasted only two seasons, at her request. A renewed interest in film led Diahann to the dressed-down title role of Claudine (1974), as a Harlem woman raising six children on her own. She was nominated for an Oscar in 1975, but her acting career would become more and more erratic after this period. She did return, however, to the stage with productions of "Same Time, Next Year" and "Agnes of God". While much ado was made about her return to series work as a fashionplate nemesis to Joan Collins' ultra-vixen character on the glitzy primetime soap Dynasty (1981), it became much about nothing as the juicy pairing failed to ignite. Diahann's character was also a part of the short-lived "Dynasty" spin-off The Colbys (1985). Throughout the late 1980s and early 90s she toured with her fourth husband, singer Vic Damone, with occasional acting appearances to fill in the gaps. Some of her finest work came with TV-movies, notably her century-old Sadie Delany in Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years (1999) and as troubled singer Natalie Cole's mother in Livin' for Love: The Natalie Cole Story (2000). She also portrayed silent screen diva Norma Desmond in the musical version of "Sunset Blvd." and toured America performing classic Broadway standards in the concert show "Almost Like Being in Love: The Lerner and Loewe Songbook." She then had recurring roles on Grey's Anatomy (2005) and White Collar (2009).

A Mother’s Love (Part One)

Summary: After a close call with death by a witch’s hand, Sam and Dean find themselves in a situation that they never thought could happen: Baby turning human. Left in shock, Dean and Sam could not even begin to think of what to do. Little do they know, they have nothing to worry about because Baby is determined to take care of everything.

“Sammy!” Dean yelled out as he lunged forward, pulling his little brother down to the muddy ground and out of the way of the witch’s magic. A purple light zipped right over the boys’ heads seconds after they ducked their heads. Scorching the trees as it passed, the purple light met its unintended victim: Baby. “No!” Dean let out a blood-curdling scream as he scrambled to his feet, running towards his most prized possession. “Dean!” Sam hurriedly sprinted after his distraught brother who was tearfully examining Baby. There was a big sizzling hole where the right taillight once was. The bumper was distorted as it slightly melted during the impact. Baby cried out, her alarms sounding off. “I just buffed her this morning. Oh Baby, I’m so sorry!” Dean weepily apologized, running his fingers along the car. “Dean, we should go. It won’t take long until the witch returns,” Sam lightly shoved Dean to the driver’s door as he made his way to the passenger side. Dean devastatingly flopped into the driver’s seat as he lazily put the key into the ignition with a very noticeable pout. With a twist, Baby sputtered and spat to life. “I’ll get you fixed, I promise!” Dean sighed out, revving Baby’s engine as he peeled off into the distance.

Speeding down the long open road, Dean and Sam sat in silence just listening to the sound of Baby’s spatters. “After Baby gets fixed, we are going back and killing that son of a bitch!” Dean growled, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. “No! That witch could have killed one of us back there,” Sam refused, shaking his head “If it wasn’t Baby then it would have been one of us or maybe even both of us!” Dean clenched his jaw as he turned his focus to the road, knowing that Sam was right. Looking from out of the corner of his eye, Dean saw Sam looking at him with watery eyes before swiping at his eyes and looking out of the window. The pain he felt now would have been greater if that light had hit Sam. At the end of the day, Sam was all he really had.

“Your brother is your number one priority. Protect him before you protect yourself, got it?” John Winchester put a hand on Dean’s shoulder as Dean nodded in agreement, looking over at his baby brother who was shoving cheese puffs into his mouth. John gave his eight year old son’s shoulder a gentle squeeze and a pat before he proceeded towards the motel door with a bag in his hand. “Dad, when will you be back?” Dean turned around to face his father. John stared intently at his son as he thought up a random estimate “Maybe a week. Maybe a month. I’ll be back as soon as I can, don’t you worry!” Dean gave a half-hearted smile as he watched his father open up the motel door and with one final nod, John disappeared behind the door with a click. John has done this plenty of times before, so this was not Dean’s first rodeo. With a sigh, Dean took the adult world onto his little shoulders as he turned to face his four year old brother with a smile. “Book?” Sam grinned at his brother, holding up the tattered ABC book that Dean had stolen from a public library months prior. The same tattered ABC book that Dean read to Sam every single night and could recite it word for word by now. “Yes, Sammy. We can read the book,” Dean smiled back at his brother before turning back to the window to watch their father peel off into the night. Dean watched as Baby sped off. He watched until Baby was no longer visible. He watched until Sam pulled onto his shirt, pulling him out of his trance “Read book now!” Sam demanded with a tiny stamp of the foot. “Okay okay!” Dean took the book from Sam’s cheesy hands and wiped his own tears away with the sleeve of his flannel before walking with Sam to the motel bed. “A is for apple. Apples are red. B is for-” “Nana!” Sam cheered with both arms raised. “Yes! B is for banana. Bananas are yellow. C is for ca-” “Carrot! Orange carrot!” Sam cheered again, bouncing up and down on the motel bed giggling. “You’re right, Sammy! C is for carrot and carrots are orange,” Dean continued to read on as Sam would cheerfully interrupt him to finish the sentences. Dean couldn’t care less and gladly cheered Sam on as he repeated the book back to him. Sam was his number one priority and if Sam was smiling then Dean knew he was doing something right. Although Dean wished that his mother was alive and he was able to be a normal kid, Dean knew he was enough for Sam and that was all that mattered.

As Dean zoned back in, he took a quick look at his watch and noticed that hours had passed since the two last spoke. “We’ve been on the road for hours. It’s late and the bunker is still a few hours away, we should stop for the night,” Dean suggested before looking over to a sleeping Sam. “Yeah, we’re stopping,” Dean whispered to himself as he steered Baby towards the highway exit.

The motel door creaked open allowing the cold air of the night to creep into the room. Careful footsteps thudded through the room startling Sam awake from his deep slumber. Chest heaving, Sam propped himself up. His wide eyes scanning the dark room until he spotted a figure standing right there staring right back at him. Squinting his eyes, he noticed a beautiful naked woman, wide eyed with a big smile. With a quick swipe underneath the flat motel pillow, Sam pulled out his gun. Cocked back and ready to fire, Sam held the gun in the direction of the woman. As her smile twitched into a devastating frown, the woman stared down the barrel of the gun with bright watery eyes.Who are you?” Sam questioned the woman who did not move nor say a thing. “D-Dean!” Sam stuttered as his breathing became erratic. Looking from the woman to his sleeping brother, Sam scrambled to the other motel bed and shook his brother awake “Dean, wake up!” “I’m up. I’M UP!” Dean growled, running a tiresome hand over his face. “Tell me you know her,” Sam gulped, looking at the woman again. “Who?” Dean finally looked at Sam who was pale-faced with his arm extended out with his gun in hand. Dean allowed his eyes to gaze over in the direction that the gun was pointing until he saw the naked woman. Dean jumped out of bed with a gun in his hand, he stared at the woman “Who are you?” The woman turned to Dean and her face twitched into a smile “Baby,”

Dean looked over at Sam who was already looking at him. Both boys had guns pointed at the woman and yet she looked more disappointed than scared. “I think you have the wrong room. We don’t know anyone named Baby,” Sam lowered his gun as the woman turned to him, tears beginning to fall down her face as she took a step closer. “But, you do Sammy. It’s me!” Baby smiled at Sam who started to raise his gun again. Upset, Baby snapped her head towards Dean “Dean, it’s me. I’m Baby!” Dean glanced over at Sam, clenching his jaw. Baby turned so her backside was facing the boys “That witch shot my taillight out, remember?” There was a thick silence in the air that Baby could sense. Quickly turning around, she saw that the boys had already dropped their guns and were staring at her with wide eyes and open mouths. “Believe me now?” Baby smiled. Without hesitation, Baby pulled both boys into a hug “I’ve wanted to do this for forever!”

“What do we do now?” Dean ran a hand over his face, sitting back in his chair with a sigh. Sam shrugged, shaking his head at his brother. Baby came out of the bathroom wearing one of Dean’s shirts and a pair of Sam’s sweatpants “You boys need to go back to sleep. It’s still very late,” “We will. Right after we figure out what to do since our only form of transportation is now a two legged woman!” Dean huffed, taking a drink of his beer. “Oh, was I supposed to be a four legged woman? I’ll get right on that, Dean!” Baby retorted. Sam cracked a smile as he let out a small laugh “Okay, okay. Let’s get some sleep and figure this out in the morning!” Dean mumbled to himself, taking a gulp of his beer as Baby sat down beside Dean. “This is just a weird situation right now. I understand your frustration, Dean. I would be frustrated as well, but we will figure this out together. It’s not all on you anymore. I’m here for you both,” Baby put her hand on Dean’s knee and gently squeezed, giving him a soft sincere smile. Dean’s face relaxed into a smile as he nodded. “Let’s get you both to bed, huh?” Baby giggled, taking the beer from Dean. “Hey!” Dean began to protest but stopped once Baby shot him a look which he held his hands up in defense to.

“Goodnight, boys!” Baby hummed as she walked over to both of the boys, kissing them gently on the forehead as they quietly snored. Baby sighed in admiration as she sat in the space between the beds, watching both of the boys. Her chest felt heavy with love. She was there throughout Mary’s pregnancy. Back and forth to doctor’s appointments. Back and forth to the hospital and home during all false alarms or scares. She was the car that brought both of the boys home from the hospital. She was there their whole lives. Spilled milk and juice turned into spilled beer. Lost pacifiers turned into lost condoms. “Shut up, cry baby!” “You shut up, meanie!” turned into “Bitch!” “Jerk!” She was there through their ups and downs. When Mary was killed, Dean had to take on a heavy role that a child should never have to do. Dean never had the chance to be cared for as he was always caring for Sam as well as everyone else.  She was there every time Dean crept out just to sit in the driver’s seat and sob. Every “I can’t do this anymore” broke her heart. Oh, she wished she could have held Dean in her arms until his tears stopped. She was there every time Sam would sit in the passenger seat drowning himself in alcohol and in tears, wondering if Dean was really gone this time or not. She wished she could take on the cruel world for the boys. She saw through their tough exterior. She knew all they wanted was to have someone there for them. She knew John meant well, but he didn’t do well. They needed someone to be there for them. They needed someone to take on the world for them. They needed someone to care for them other than each other. Someone to love them other than each other. They needed the one thing they were missing their entire lives. A mother and Baby was determined to be that for them.

The motel room was filled with the scent of sweet pancakes and freshly brewed coffee. Sniffing at the air, Sam slowly peeled his eyes open. A smile stretched across his face as he heard Baby humming because that meant he wasn’t dreaming. Sitting up, Sam saw three plates laid out on the small wooden table along with napkins, glass cups, actual silverware, and a beautiful rose in a small vase. He noticed that Baby wasn’t in their clothes anymore and was wearing a beautiful 

50’s kind of dress. She quickly turned as she heard the bed creak itself to life with every movement Sam made “Good morning, Sam! Breakfast is almost ready. How’d you sleep?” “Fine, thank you!” Sam couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face as he looked around the motel room. “Did you sleep? Do you sleep?” Sam shoved his hands in his sweatpants’ pocket. “I don’t think so. My gas tank is on full!” Baby joked, opening the oven to peek inside before letting the oven door click itself shut. Sighing, Baby turned around and wiped her hands off with a cloth before reaching for a chair to sit down on. Sam hurriedly pulled out the chair for Baby. “Thank you, honey!” Baby kissed Sam gently on the cheek before sitting down. Sam joined her by sitting in the chair right across from her “That’s a beautiful dress! You look beautiful,” Sam complimented. “Thank you! I went out earlier this morning and went shopping. Also, we have a new car!” Baby chimed in a sing-song tune while dangling a pair of car keys that she pulled from Dean’s jacket pocket. “Wow! Thank you,” Sam beamed. His eyes searched hers as he felt a sense of safety and security that he had never felt before. Her big eyes were kind and loving. Her lipstick smile was bright, big, and genuine. Her cheeks were subtly rosy. Her presence lit the darkest of rooms and the darkest of moods. Sam cleared his throat as he began to feel warm. “Coffee is done! Would you like a cup?” Baby stood up from the table and walked over to the coffee maker. Sam’s eyes followed Baby from the time she stood up to the time she dished out three coffee mugs from a reusable grocery bag. His attention snapped away from Baby when he heard the creaking of the bed Dean was asleep in. Dean sat up, groggily rubbing at his eyes. “Good morning, Dean! How do you like your coffee?” Baby grinned. “Uh..just black?” Dean’s statement dragged into a question as he eyed Baby’s outfit, knowing that they did not have makeup and dresses just hanging around. “Baby went out earlier today and bought some stuff. Even a car!” Sam grinned, holding up the car keys for Dean to see. “You walked?” Dean cocked an eyebrow at Baby who rolled her eyes with a smile glued on her face “Yes, I walked. Of course, I did not get there as fast as I would have with four wheels! Now come sit down by Sam while I get breakfast plated up,” Dean slowly got out of bed and made his way to the table. Looking around, he never had a proper breakfast in a motel before. He clenched his jaw as Baby set a mug of black coffee in front of him. Dean slowly picked the mug up, letting the heat warm his hands before taking a careful sip of the hot coffee. Groaning, Dean let the hot liquid flow into his mouth and down his throat. Putting the mug down, Dean nodded in satisfaction “That is some damn good coffee, Baby!” “Thank you! The coffee maker did the hard work,” Baby neatly dished out a lot of food onto the boys’ empty plates. Dean licked at his lips as the sweet steam from the food intoxicated him. Sam took a deep breath in, sniffing up the scent and closing his eyes in pleasure. Baby joined the boys at the table, sipping at her mug “Are you boys going to eat or just smell the food?” She laughed as a big smile grew on their faces before they dug into the food.

Dean and Sam sat back comfortably full and satisfied as Baby finished the last drop of her coffee. Collecting the dishes into a manageable stack, Baby stood up and started making her way over to the sink to clean up. “No no no! We got it from here,” Sam quickly stood up, taking the pile of dishes from Baby. “Thank you for breakfast, Baby. It’s time for you to relax!” Dean grabbed Baby’s hand and led her back to her seat. Baby smiled at the boys as she sat back down. She joyfully watched as Sam cleaned up the breakfast mess while Dean packed up their bags. Baby sighed in contentment as she watched the boys work together without a fuss. She couldn’t help but think back on the years when Dean and Sam were just kids who couldn’t do the simplest things without an argument erupting between them.

“Sammy, clean her gently!..Not like that..Don’t scratch her..You’re gonna scratch her...WATCH IT! Just go, okay? Sam rolled his eyes, stomping away from his brother. “Kids, man! No one will ever lay an unloving hand on you I promise,” Dean cooed to Baby while gently cleaning. “Yeah, you want me to go inside so you can make out with Baby! The only girlfriend you’ll be able to keep!” Sam yelled to Dean as he made his way inside. Dean threw the sponge on the ground and sprinted towards Sam, tackling him to the ground and tickling him until he was red in the face.

Baby opened her eyes, jolting out of the chair with a gasp “What happened?” She looked at the boys who were standing there with a smirk on their faces. “I guess your gas tank was on empty,” Sam joked, grinning at Baby. “Here,” Dean handed Baby a tissue. Baby slowly took the tissue, confusion written all over her face. “For the drool!” Dean motioned on his face to where Baby should wipe. “We have the car packed up. Whenever you’re ready, we can head home!” Sam grinned as his heart fluttered at the thought of what the bunker would be like with Baby there. Dean watched as Baby gently wiped at her face, standing up and following Sam out of the door. “It’s a beautiful day today, isn’t it?” Baby gently grabbed Sam’s arm, holding onto it and resting her head against his arm as they walked towards the car together. Dean sniffed as hot tears spilled out of his red-rimmed eyes. Putting his hand over his chest, he could feel an empty void being filled. A void that had been there for as long as he could remember. A void that he relied on beer to fill. A void that seemed impossible to fill until now because Dean was always missing one key component in his life. A mother.

“You coming, Dean?” Baby unknowingly interrupted Dean as her head poked into the motel room. Dean jumped as he wiped away his tears, sniffling “Uh, yeah! I-I was just making sure everything was out,” Baby pursed her lips together as she made her way towards Dean, taking his face in her hands. Her eyes searched Dean’s red, watery eyes “You don’t have to hide anymore. Sweetheart, I have you. I’m here now,” Dean felt himself choke on a sob as he took a deep breath in. Hyperventilating, Dean began to panic as he fought against the sob. “Let it go, Dean. It’s okay,” Baby coaxed Dean, gently caressing his reddened cheeks with her thumbs. Dean let out a whine as his shoulders began to relax, tears spilling out of his eyes as he broke down in Baby’s arms. 1 What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

I don’t get the Skinner/Scully thing. Just nope. She sees him as her boss. He sees her as a strong, attractive woman but also has a kind of fatherly view of her. I also have reservations about Mulder and Scully being bi. I have seen some great arguments for but personally, I just don’t see it playing it out. I mean Mulder is just all about the girls (and when I say girls I mean Scully), so sorry all you Mulder/Krycek fans, it’s not something I could truly get behind.

10 Most disliked arc? Why?

Where does one start? There were so many poorly executed ones. Diana had such potential to be a strong antagonist, not just a love triangle arch bitch. The Emily arc – why? That was just cruel. The whole Mulder on the run thing. William/Jackson alien or human, Mulder’s or not? That was just lazy, sensationalist writing. But for me, the worst offender is the Samantha starlight thing. I mean, when we first meet Mulder he’s obsessed with finding his sister. There were clones, he ditched Scully goodness knows how many times to chase phantom leads, he looked for her in every case involving young girls, his life turned at age 12 and he harboured that young, frightened, guilty boy inside for so long. Yet…the arc ended with such a fizzle. I don’t know, it was just a weak ending to a premise that held such possibility.

17 Instead of XYZ happening, I would have made ABC happen…

Again, so many plot lines could have been done better. Ending the show at either Je Souhaite or Existence; no unexplored and threatened (dumb) break-up in IWTB, no unexplored break-up in Season 10 (which could have happened but should have been presented to us in a way where we could understand it), no it was all a dream in Season 10/11. But the biggest and cruellest XYZ was the Season 11 Jackson arc.  I say no to the medical rape and the retconning and the miracle baby. I would have had Scully meet her son, yet let him go because she understands his need to be free, because she knows him and would get his impulsivity (hello, who’s the daddy?). I would have let Mulder and Scully come together as mature, battle-weary adults who have endured trauma after trauma yet still come back to each other (hello, that’s the truth, people) and I would have had them talk, KISS and walk away from the war, knowing they won.

19 What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?

I’m not sure I would even consider them in the fandom really, but those nuts who spew hate, lies and bigoted opinions, who creepily know everything about the lives of DD and GA, who stalk their partners yet refuse to believe they are in relationships, who abuse those partners whom they know nothing about, who call GA an ungrateful whore and yet still purport to be fans of the show. I don’t get it. I don’t understand why they spend so much time actively hating. Their hearts must be cold and shrivelled and their brains not much better. It’s pitiful really, that they waste so much time yelling about people they’ve never met, making up shit and even more pitiful that people still engage with them, fuelling their sad fantasies.

She has been training in the art of charm and seduction since she was five. And she’s damn good at it. Girl’s got a +8 to persuasion and deception and an 18 in charisma.

Talia did pretty much everything performative as a child: singing, dancing, acting, standing around looking pretty. It wasn’t until after she became a pirate that her activities upgraded to looting, killing, and having sex for funsies.

Swordsmanship. When she lived with her mother she wasn’t allowed to even look at weapons, but after she was orphaned she had to learn how to fight and she got good at it.

Sitting on the edge of a beach and letting water run over her toes which a mug of mead in one hand, and Reyelle in the other.

Anything chocolate. Particularly chocolate cake because it was one of the meals she shared with her mother that her mother seemed to focus entirely on her.

While captain, it was her first mate Ariadne and her navigator, Calliope. They both seemed to know what Talia had been through even if Talia didn’t know herself, and acted as her older siblings.

D: Decoration

1. how would they decorate a house if they had one under their name?

She never really wants a house just because she’s been on the move her entire life, but if she were to get one, she’d want wide spaces so she could run and move about, and would decorate her home with her spoils of her robberies and a couple hanging lights because there’s nothing like a good light feature.

2. how would they decorate their child’s room?

A whole walk in closet so they can choose whatever they want to wear, a ton of “My First Weapons” toys including a toy sword and toy gun, any stuffed animals or dolls that they’d like, and a full library.

Her old room on the ship was decked out in many of the ornate blankets and pillows that she stole throughout the years as well as her desk which usually stashes more plundered treasure and a few liquor bottles. She makes sure her bed is next to the window (which is locked from the inside) in case she needs to escape during the night.

Lots of long red dresses with frilly sleeves, long thigh high or knee length boots, a little tiara she stole from a noble, various ear piercings, and of course her snake choker.

Not at all, and it’s a mystery to even Talia. She thinks what you see is what you get, but that’s just because her real emotions are hidden deep under six layers of sarcasm and frozen exteriors.

She despises having to conform to the norm and would much rather go her own path.

Nope, she loves doing her own things and causing a scene.

She lets people figure out on their own, but it takes a while because Talia is very particular about how she portrays herself. She wants you to think she’s a stone cold bitch who would kiss you and then kill you, which is true, but even Talia doesn’t know she’s more complex than that.

Stealing from the rich and giving to herself, sleeping with beautiful women, sometimes both at once. Also she loves doing Reyelle for fun ;)

Her everything. Though if there had to be a specific feature, probably her facial structure. She has a very symmetrical, well structured face. And it knocks everyone away.

When she actually likes someone, she will drop everything to attend to them, even if she tries to mask it under sarcasm. When she and Reyelle get close, Reyelle could basically ask Talia to do anything, and she’d do it.

You basically can have everything for free because she will steal it for you.

Physically she loves every bit of herself because let’s be honest, she’s heartstopping. But she doesn’t like that she goes into quiet spells because she thinks it makes her weak.

She does envy that other people get to have actual friends they know would be there for her. She’s a little jealous of the Wonder Twins that they have each other.

It’s not necessarily a personality trait, but Talia is extremely resourceful and will make the best out of a bad situation, even if it means killing people to do it.

She is one of the most selfish people you’ll ever meet (at least at the moment). When Roman went missing and everyone except Reyelle went looking for him, she was this close to asking Reyelle if she wanted to hightail it out of there with her and forget any of this ever happened.

Reyelle loves her wit, charm, and soft hear that Talia tries in vain to keep hidden.

Rey envies her ability to talk so easily to people and apparent laid-back personality.

She hates pretty much anyone who’s overly optimistic and bubbly because she finds that a little annoying, but she also hates cockiness and an overt attempt to be macho. She also hates people who snitch, Roman.

Usually just to get a rise out of people or to distract them while she robs them. A lot of things Talia does is usually a distraction to rob them.

Yes, but never acts on it because she was taught that a lady’s mind should be kept secret.

R: Rules

1. do they follow rules?

Up until she became a pirate, Talia followed every rule she was ever given, but now unless you were a specific person, you can never get her to follow any rule. The only reason she didn’t lie right out to the police is because she was hoping they’d let her go if she complied.

2. would they be a strict or laid-back parent?

She would be an extremely laid back parent. As long as her kid doesn’t talk back or is out for more time than is safe, she would let them get away with literal murder.

3. have they ever been consequenced for breaking a rule?

All the time. Her mother knew exactly how to punish Talia and it worked every time.

4. have they broken any rules they now regret breaking?

She regretted every time she broke any of her mother’s rules.

5. do they find any rules they/others follow absolutely ridiculous?

Any law. What if she just really, really wants something more than another person. By right, she should be able to call it hers.

S: Streets

1. are they street-smart?

Absolutely. Talia would not have survived this long if she wasn’t.

2. would they give money to someone on the streets?

Not willingly unless Rey was with her and then she’d feel so guilty that she’d give a couple coins just to appease her.

3. have they ever gotten in a fight on the streets?

Plenty of times. She once got kicked out of a tavern because she caused a bar fight because a man called her “doll”.

4. has anything happened to them on the streets?

It’s mentioned above that a couple times she was attacked before she joined a crew and it was one of the first times she killed someone. There was also that time they walked on that pile of corpses and they were all arrested.

5. are they cautious when out?

Extremely so. Especially now that she doesn’t have a crew and she’s effectively on her own along with some very strange people.

T: Truth

1. are they honest?

She’s probably lied more in her life than she’s been honest.

2. can they tell if someone is lying?

She’s got a +3 to insight and is usually at least skeptical of everyone she meets, including Reyelle when she first met her. She always takes what people say with a grain of salt just in case they’re using her the same way she’s probably using them.

3. is it obvious when they’re lying?

Nope, pretty much not at all. Like I said, girl’s got a +8 to deception.

4. have they lied about anything they regret lying about?

She does regret lying to Reyelle about taking her aboard the Rusted Serpent to take her around sailing, just to steal from her and leave her stranded. Partially because she feels super guilty that she stole from her only to run into her again, and two because Reyelle really does deserve the world.

5. have they told truths that have been spread against their will?

She absolutely despises whoever knew her last name among the Rusted Serpents and spread it to everyone, because now her party knows who she is, though hasn’t really seemed to feel the sense that they know exactly who she is.

U: Underdog

1. have they been bullied?

It’s less bullying and more mutiny, but when working as a captain, it took a lot to get some people (particularly some of the men working) to trust her in a leadership position and tried to bully her out. It only took being on the business end of a rapier and a threat that she promised to make good on for them to not their bullying in her face.

2. have they bullied anyone?

Oh definitely. She’s bullied some of the first crew, her crew now, and flat out stole from some of her party. She likes bullying Roman though. Just because he’s a dick.

3. have they been physically attacked by a bully?

When she was on her own, some men on the street tried to attack her and pushed her against the wall and it was the first time she killed someone without using a weapon. She basically gouged their eyes out with her bare fingers.

4. have they ever been doubted?

Abso-fucking-lutely. It’s why her ship’s been stolen and two thirds of her crew are dead.

5. have they surprised people with being good at something?

Some of the people on her first crew knew who she was and were extremely surprised (and a little intimidated) by how fast Talia learned how to swordfight.

V: Vomit

1. do they vomit often?

Nope, she’s got a stomach of steel after a couple years at sea. She will only vomit if she sees excessive gore.

2. do they get lots of stomach aches?

Not anymore since she’s used to being at sea, but starting around six or so, she got sick a ton as child and had doctors and nurses see her whenever she wasn’t working.

3. are they good at comforting someone ill?

Not at all. If someone is sick on the ship, you won’t see Talia for days around that person until she’s 110% you’re better. The only person she ever got near when they were sick is Celestia, and that’s because the teen gnome is one of her favorite people.

4. what do they like as far as comfort goes?

She usually doesn’t like to be touched when she’s sick (unless you’re Reyelle) but with Rey she would like having her back rubbed and being kissed on the top of her head.

5. do they burp, cough, or hiccup most when nauseous? when vomiting?

Both cough and hiccup, both of which she hates. She usually sits over a bucket and just feels sad.

W: Water

1. do they drink enough water?

She drinks a lot but none of it’s water. She drinks enough to stay alive and keep her skin clear.

2. have they learned to swim?

She learned to swim as a child, but was retaught as a way to survive by the first crew she joined.

3. do they like to swim?

It’s one of the more relaxing pastimes she has.

4. can they dive?

Yep, sometimes its the only way to get off a ship.

5. can they swim without holding their nose?

Yes, she’s pretty good at overall swimming.

X: Xylophone

1. what is their favorite genre of music?

She actually really loves the tango. Dancing to it, not so much, but she loves the sound.

2. do they have a favorite song?

“El Tango de Roxanne” from Moulin Rouge or “Bad Girls” by M.I.A

3. do they have a favorite band/artist/singer?

If she listened to modern music, it would probably be Lorde, Halsey, or Lorde.

4. can they sing well?

Among other things, she’s a trained singer (mostly for classical opera and genres along that line), so she can sing beautifully.

5. can they rap?

She was never given the chance to learn how to rap because it was deemed ‘unrefined’, but after a lot of practice, she’d be able to pull it off.

1. how old were you when you created them?

19? I think I made it in the summer and I didn’t have a name just “half-elf pirate who’s a professional lesbian”

2. what inspired you to create them?

I was just going on a dnd kid making spree (which included my halfling bard Granny), and decided to make a pirate character and I was shook with her beauty.

3. were they different when they were first created?

Her original backstory was a lot less sad and less room to be a reformed asshole, and now I think out of my pcs, her’s is the one that’s most fucked up.

4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters?

She is very fun to write, especially deciphering between how good should I make her when she is neutral evil right now, and how do I make her not as shitty so she can be better in the future.

5. what’s your favorite thing about them?

She’s sad and gay. Also she’s going to be my first reformed asshole.

Siamese cats

For the most part no. She’s had bad experiences with animals, especially regarding symbols.

Cats. Dogs are the devil’s anus. Too loud and boisterous.

Something nice and quiet like a turtle. Though she wouldn’t really mind a cat. It’s fancy and ruthless, just like her.

Let me tell you something

This girl was an EMT and she WORKED with them cops. They did it on purpose, they're racists.

So my first thought was to rape her but tree says I'm incorrect. They were racist and she obviously knew secrets about them from working on the job.

Their sole action was to shoot and kill.

They're on next month's schedule for a separate hit list that doesnt have their personal permission to be killed.

They're not on the suicide assassination list.

But they're on a different "Aveng-A-Alante" list. Its to avenge her death or get revenge in other words and also the word vigilante combined since we don't have permission to kill them unlike the other list.

So I think that we should have this public. And i certainly dont mind hanging THESE cops in a tree. But.. Let's see what they do. But sure I would definitely like to see it in the news.

She's waited long enough

The charges on her boyfriend have just been dropped and I am extremely glad about that. I want his location proven to not be near these cops when they die as well as her other family and friends.

So prepare to have that completely and fully documented.

And to her boyfriend I want to tell him I love him and I am proud of him and I am sorry he's had to suffer and I am sorry those cops pressed charges!! I was very upset most about that.

Its such a tragic loss to lose such a beautiful woman and then to face jail time on top of that when just,trying to defend and protect... Its one of the worst horrible things.

The difference to now is they have had time to gather their senses and realize they should run. And they will.

To stand up agaisnt them caused them to lie and hide in the dark and kill a sleeping woman.

Minneapolis was in broad daylight in the street

Now Breonnas killer's arrogance has built and they will attempt to save themselves by giving up because if they fight back, they fear the streets will kill them.

Its a very different psychological difference.

Breonnas family has been in extreme danger if they tried to flip the table.

So what the CIA did instead was after the cops did arrest her boyfriend, log in him in a jail. We bailed him out and

Then took him and their families to a secret location.

Since this week the charges have been dropped it means it's an all clear psychologically for the cops.

So they had a man that looked similar to the boyfriend go and pack up and move all the stuff out of the house then go and live at the new house boxes were taken to. And go to court and so on for the boyfriend.

Its not illegal. He could just sent his lawyer alone but he also sent his "representative" the guy who looked like him. With special permission from the judge.

The boyfriend is still hidden.

See, in Miami, it's never cute to be the first person at the party, and really the party never ends until someone actually says it does... And clearly the Riverdale Party is still very much in full swing. So consider this 10th Entry 'Riverdale Revisit'; the after party to end all after parties. Of course, we're going to be set up for S2 when it goes live. This is definitely not one of the tv shows that Spotlight Saga will be dropping in the coming, world famous, 'fall tv' season frenzy. But don't get it twisted, there are many on the chopping block... OUR chopping block. We're looking at what gets our blood pumping and our thoughts racing, giving us something more to talk about than "Last Night on ___insert uninspired show number #45 here___." 'Riverdale' has made a massive stir across social media and of course on The CW & their worldwide dominating partner, Netflix, as well. I love that due to streaming, the new large amounts of cash pouring in from its subsequent deals, and actually several generations full of 'cord cutters', there are no longer rules to watching and writing about television series and films... Get to them when you can, some will watch them live, some will stream them later, some will wait until they can binge them all at once like a Weekend Warrior with a pocket full of Ecstasy and a head full of hallucinogens. It's our world now, and CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and more (or less) importantly 'Nielsen Holdings', no longer control what, when, where, why, and how much. Smell that? That's the sweet smell of change... And the remnants of murder and sticky maple syrup, obvi. Ive been extremely careful not to overpraise 'Riverdale' in the past. Similar series have only led to frustration or feelings of complete frustration. Its hard to know what to expect from a show like this in the near future... We all saw the demise of similar series like 'Pretty Little Liars' and other shows that run through the same type of vein... Kind of like many of the other ones attempted over at the now defunct ABC Family where PLL first started. Like The WB, UPN, and now The CW, ABC Family has also gone through a newly rebranding process that didn't do much to help the sinking ship they now call Freeform TV... A network that only 'The Fosters' and its cheesy sister show 'Shadowhunters' seem to be keeping afloat. We aren't being negative, we're being real... And when you're at a party, or in this case, 'After Party', you've got to be real. You just gotta... Even if no one ever wanted the party in the first place. If you don't know what I mean, let me spell it out for you. Ready? Set? Spell! Ah fuck it, we'll just spill the tea... 'Let's have a Kiki! Lock the doors tight!' I sometimes wonder if my obscure pop culture references I often sneak into these articles ever actually connect. They probably don't, but to that one person that got it, FUCK YEAH! It's the birthday of Jughead (Cole Sprouse)... And much like the very similar, fellow female counterpart, Sheila the She-Wolf, another introverted style character from 'Riverdale's sister show on Netflix, 'GLOW'... Jughead is not really into parties and/or making a big fuss about a birthday or bringing any unnecessary & unwanted attention to his person. Unfortunately for Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead isn't really big on camaraderie, most definitely not in the spirit equivalent to the 'Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling'! The reasons behind throwing these two characters' each their own impromptu birthday bashes on their respective tv shows are done for totally different reasons. With 'GLOW', it was slightly annoying at first (for Sheila, anyway), but eventually it turned from an apprehensive & anxiety filled event to a touching, sweet moment, where a closed off character had a major breakthrough that was captured in the perfect beam of light, allowing a significant development and enabling an insight into another character's backstory, bringing the whole cast together for the most part. In a great juxtaposition, on 'Riverdale', the psychology behind this one is actually much, much different... It's still got the 'trepidatious yet possible potential for a surprise moment of gratification' aspect down to a certain degree, but it doesn't go down the path of the balmy & charming. The reasoning behind Betty's sudden obsession to give Jughead the party that he never wanted, and the background as to why he's so against the idea in the first place certainly doesn't inspire camaraderie or any kind of 'feel good' moments, especially at the party itself. If anything, the intent is slightly bordering on the side of creepy. Riverdale?! Creepy?!? Yup! Keep up! It's only getting creepier. You see... We've been up on 'Riverdale' and then back down, and then back up and down again... And I think everyone here will openly admit that it's mostly due to a shaky CW track record, as well as similar networks just like it, though there has been a few inconsistencies outside of this oddball tone & beautiful color scheme we're always raving about. However, when the show fully embraces its complete and total anomalous, almost freakish eccentricities, we all just fall right back in love with the show again. It's episodes like 'Chapter 10: The Lost Weekend' that completely make us forget about past network follies and shows like PLL completely losing their way after gaining our trust and enthusiasm in its beginning stages. Reinhart is effortlessly serving up 'Bizarre, Bilateral, Betty Bananas' like a full-on, award ready, seasoned vet. Seriously, I don't want to blow too much smoke up the kid's ass, but I'm pretty sure her breakthrough performance here would even make the likes of decorated actress such as Nicole Kidman proud. Betty Cooper has a duality that Reinhart not only highlights with strong, hearty performances... But it's also the efforts of Director Dawn Williamson, a phenomenal Art Department (you guys KICK MAJOR ASS), Cinematographer Stephen Jackson (this guy was award-worthy in this episode), and Costume & Wardrobe (hell, everyone involved in the smallest, minute details) framed from shot to shot... The absurdity of how tight & perfectly situated her ponytail is, how hard she clenches her hands (leaving scratch marks on her palms), even the way she holds the cake & dawns the signature 'Jughead Crown', to whoever made the call of having those weirdo party goers in horse masks in the background - Good call, guys! That was freaking CRAZY! It's all those little things that make the picture such a pleasure to watch... Turning what seems like a normal teen drama at first glance, to a finely tuned, surprisingly compelling theatrical spectacle. The crazy is in full on abundance, though... It's not just Betty. Suddenly after a string of a few disappointing episodes, I come back after a break and either see things in a totally different light, or it could be that this was just slowly building right under our noses the whole time, or *the most plausible of all three options* is that the ironically lowest rated episode of the series, according to the great analysts over at Nielsen, is actually the most technically sound, character driven, insanely atmospheric entry of the entire 1st Season. Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) finally lets go of some deep resentments she's been bottling up and goes after Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch). This is a task that I wouldn't suggest to any person of sound or capable mind to attempt in any way, shape, fashion, or form. The act is crazy in and of itself, and pissing off the 'Ravishing Redhead' that literally wears the letters 'HBIC' on the back of her cheerleading uniform, that's 'Head Bitch in Charge' for anyone too young or too old to remember Tiffany Pollard of VH1's 'I Love New York', is obviously going to lead to a backlash that Veronica won't likely forget. Sure she might get her big 'W' now, but we must remind you... There's no 'W' in 'HBIC'. Meanwhile, Cole Sprouse & Skeet Ulrich, who plays Serpent Gangster FP Jones & Jughead's father on the show, are literally close to actually convincing me that they are really father and son in real life. The little ticks and nuances that they share are out of this fn' world insane. Either these two have spent a week in a trailer together mirroring their every move or we seriously need to ring in Maury Povich for a DNA Test! Oh, and apparently there's some guy on the show named Archie Andrews (KJ Apa)... The only drawback is that they've failed to make the main protagonist (is he tho?) even remotely interesting. He's good looking, but he's not a convincing redhead, and I'm still not hooked into his arc. Hey, that's ok... Enter Mary Andrews (Molly Ringwald - ChaChing!), Archie's long lost mother. So nice of you to finally drop in, Molly! Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) is ready to finalize the divorce, but we're just biting on all the possibly juicy dramatic scenarios! Who is Archie again? Back at the party, that burgeoning rivalry between Veronica and Cheryl hits its boiling point when Veronica gets a bit too carried away and accuses Cheryl and her deceased brother Jason (Trevor Stines) of having an incestious affair. Ah, gotta love seedy underbelly of the United States! The more money, the crazier the family!!! Oh but there's more! Good ol' All-American Chuck (Jordan Calloway), who actually WAS almost boiled alive, attempts to out Betty on her 'Dr. Jeckyl/Ms. Hyde' issue that surfaced when a hot tub prank got a bit too out of hand earlier in the season. To our surprise, and viewer delight, Jughead and his Dad actually had a moment, which was completely unexpected, yet felt completely real. Like I said before, Ulrich & Sprouse have stellar chemistry, and the writers seem to know this and obviously derive great pleasure in giving us this moment where the two aren't at total odds and Jughead not only carefully considers, but actually takes his biological father's advice... Providing solid proof that the series isn't trying to meander or stretch out any unnecessary storylines at all. No disrespect to fans of other series broadcast on The CW, but clearly this isn't 'The Flash'. These storylines seem to be heading into important territory at a reasonable pace, and not just hanging around to fulfill an episode number requested by an executive to make sure ad-space quotas are filled... Although I have considered that this could be an issue that the show could run into in its expanded 22-Episode Run that it's been greenlit for S2. There's plenty of juicy drama to go around, but when we see that drama making moves instead of being drawn out, then you know you've got a potentially good show on your hands. For now, 'Riverdale' is back on a solid trajectory, delivering what appears to be a set-up episode for the impending S1 finale... A set-up episode that was easily the most consistent entry to date from start to finish. The impression that an episode as good as this exists to move its characters like chess pieces, seemingly just to put everyone in place for the final three episodes is an exciting notion for the last 3 hours of S1 of 'Riverdale' to come!

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 2/10/17

Last night, my friend Mike and I went to check out The Lego Batman Movie. Seeing as how we were the only two people in the theater, I’m not quite sure what its weekend box office is gonna look like. I bet John Wick: Chapter 2 takes #1, since that’s where everyone seemed to be heading. Anyway, I LOVED the film. First up, it considers EVERYTHING canon. If you saw it onscreen, then it happened in that universe. The whole thing is kind of surreal, as the movie focuses on Batman’s loner status, while also confronting his complicated relationship with The Joker. On the Batman Beyond cartoon, there’s an episode where old Bruce Wayne and his protege, Terry McGinnis, go to a Batman-themed musical. Bruce can’t get over how goofy the whole thing seems, but I feel like this film is the movie version of that musical. It doesn’t have the camp of the ’66 show, but it’s a movie that never really takes itself seriously. I loved the liberties they took, like making Jim and Barbara Gordon people of color (voiced by Hector Elizondo and Rosario Dawson). It doesn’t hurt the story any, while bringing some diversity to the Lego world. I also liked how it tied in concepts from The Lego Movie, such as the fact that Batman is a Master Builder. I’m not going to spoil the movie for you, but I feel like it’s strong until the middle of the second act, at which point it switches from a Lego Batman movie to a Lego Dimensions movie. Trust me, you’ll understand when you see it, and I think you’ll agree that the story gets a bit weaker at that point. In any case, I can’t wait for it to hit Blu Ray, so I can rewatch it a thousand times to catch all the Easter eggs.

This week, we got a trailer for a new season of Arrow. Wait, what? That was actually for Iron Fist? Huh. Yeah, I was really underwhelmed by that trailer. Finn Jones doesn’t seem like a great actor, there’s not a lot of Kung Fu on display, and it seems like it’s more focused on corporate takeover, as Danny Rand tries to reclaim his family’s business. Since it’s a Netflix Marvel show, there’s also Rosario Dawson and another damn hallway fight. I welcome the former, but I’m SO over the latter. I’ll get around to watching it, but the days of me binge-watching a Marvel season the weekend of its release are long gone. Considering I still need to watch Daredevil season 2 and Luke Cage, I’ll be lucky to get around to it in 2017. That said, I know a lot of y’all will binge it that day, and will tell me if it sucks or not.

In other TV news, it’s rumored that NBC wants to spin Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update segment into a weekly 30-minute show. I guess they looked at John Oliver and Samantha Bee, and realized they might be leaving money on the table. Still, Jost and Che as “polarizing”, at best, and I’m not sure if that segment has the legs to air 30 minutes every week, in the same format. Plus, would it also remain a part of SNL, or would it be excised completely? I think this would’ve been a good idea in an election year, as there’s just so much news to cover, but now that all that is behind us, I’m just not sure this is going to work. And then what happens? If it does leave SNL, would it come crawling back next season, with its tail between its legs? The difference between Last Week Tonight/Full Frontal and Weekend Update is that those cable shows are actually smart, with smart hosts. Plus, they can get away with a bit more because cable. Weekend Update has gotten a lot more biting since Trump was elected, but is it too little, too late? Are the SNL writers up to the task of this project? I just feel like it’s a bad idea that will dilute the Weekend Update and SNL brands.

It was also announced that Viacom will be rebranding Spike TV as the Paramount Network. In my lifetime, I don’t think I’ve witnessed a network go through as many format changes as that one. As far back as I can remember, it was The Nashville Network. Then, to appeal to a wider audience, it became The National Network. Then, to appeal to dudebros, it became Spike TV. Now, I don’t even know who they’re targeting. I also don’t know why they chose this particular name. It’s like they have short memories or something. After all, there’s already been a Paramount Network. Sure, most of us referred to it as UPN and not the United Paramount Network, but that’s what those letters stood for. And it was the definition of “failed experiment”. Sure, it hobbled along for about 10 years, but its legacy is basically Star Trek: Voyager, America’s Next Top Model and Girlfriends. Outside of that, it gave us such critical darlings as Shasta McNasty, Homeboys In Outer Space, and The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer. Hey, let’s see how many shitty (that means all of them) UPN shows I can list without looking them up: DiResta, Legend, Platypus Man, Hitz, Good News, Sparks, Dilbert, Marker, The Watcher, The Sentinel…yeah,that’s enough to make my point, which is you probably don’t remember any of these. UPN did NOTHING for the Paramount brand, and its effects are still being felt 11 years after its demise. So why, WHY would Viacom want to go down this road again? Anyway, the early plans for the rebranding call for the network to be a warehouse for hit Viacom programming from their other networks. It’s basically just gonna be the Now That’s What I Call Viacom Channel, posting the highlights from MTV, Nick, Nick Jr, etc. In fact, there are no concrete plans for the future of other Viacom networks, such as VH1, CMT, and TVLand, but reports say that there’s no immediate push to shut them down.

It was also rumored that there are already talks of an American Idol revival, but this time on NBC. Now, keep in mind the show just ended its run on Fox last year. The idea is that The Voice would be reduced to one cycle a year, and then they would slot Idol in one of its old slots. I feel like NBC sees the value in that show in that it actually creates household names – something The Voice has failed to do after 11 seasons. The focus is too much on the judges, and the winners have gone nowhere. Quick, name a winner of The Voice without looking it up. Hell, I watched the first season, and I can’t even remember that guy (I looked it up: Javier Colon. Who? Right). So, there’s definitely something to be gained from acquiring the franchise. That said, though, I also feel like a network only gets one of those shows. Fox had Idol, NBC had The Voice, ABC had Rising Star, and CBS had some show that got canceled that I forgot. Fox hurt Idol by double-dipping and picking up The X-Factor. That show never caught on in the US, and it hurt the Fox singing competition brand. If NBC picks up Idol, it’s going to do the same to The Voice. I mean, how much longer does America want to see Blake Shelton and Adam Levine bicker at each other? Sure, there’s a new dynamic now that Blake and Gwen Stefani are dating and both judges, but unless the show breaks them up, I don’t know how engaging that’s gonna be. And Miley Cyrus as a coach? Now, let me say that Bangerz was a great album. I’ve written about how awesome it was. But I don’t think Miley is established enough as a singer to be coaching anyone. She’s more known for her antics than her music. Then again, Paula Abdul was a has been, judging the talent of tomorrow, but that was intrinsic to the formula. Ultimately, America chose the Idol, and the show brought in established stars as coaches. The Voice has an unnecessary layer. They have talented judges, but then they also have the coaches, and then America. As Idol showed us, ANYBODY cane a judge, which is going to be an important thing for NBC to remember once it comes to for contracts to be renegotiated. Anyway, I think Idol needs to rest a few more years before they dust it off. It was once a powerhouse, but television AND music changed over time. Let the industry figure out its next steps before trying to reenter it.

I don’t know about you, but I grew up with women, which meant I did a tour of duty with soap operas. I started with Days of Our Lives back in the late 80s, then shifted to The Young and the Restless, and then shifted back to Days in the 00s. And besides Victor Newman, there is no soap villain quite as diabolical as Stefano DiMera. Well, the actor who portrayed him, Joseph Mascolo, died back in December, but his final filmed episode aired yesterday.  Although Mascolo had been battling Alzheimers for the past few years, he had portrayed the character for around 30 years. For some reason (I haven’t watched in a while), he was in prison (he’s killed/led to the death of a lot of folks. But they typically come back after contract negotiations), and at the end of the episode, he escapes! What a beautiful ending, knowing that he will be forever “in the wind”, as they can’t really catch him again unless they recast him. Seeing as how the rumor is Days is coming to an end this year, they won’t even have time to do that, with scripts written about 6 months in advance. So, here’s a toast to one of the greatest villains to ever grace the television set. You will be missed, you evil son of a bitch.

Let’s get a little controversial, shall we? This week, comedian George Lopez got in hot water for kicking a woman out of one of his shows when she objected to a racially-charged joke he told. Basically he said, “There are only two rules in the Latino family: Don’t marry somebody black and don’t park in front of our house.” Apparently, a woman gave him the finger after that joke, to which he began to tell her to “sit [her] fucking ass down or get the fuck out.” Now, comedians are on his side because they say he was just shutting down a heckler. Meanwhile, the general public is on her side because they’re offended by the joke, and don’t see why he had to kick her out for objecting. Here’s my take: First of all, he’s told variations of this joke for years. He used to joke about how his grandmother wouldn’t even want President Obama in her house. If you’re familiar with his material, then his joke the other night shouldn’t surprise you. Now, for the folks offended by the joke: was he wrong? All I know is my own life experience. I dated a Cuban, and as polite and Ivy League-educated as I could be, I was still the Black guy who could only illicit grunts from her father. And I don’t know anyone named Esmeralda Jenkins or Manuela Johnson. Growing up where I did, Black guys didn’t get Latinas or Asian girls. Those girls’ families weren’t gonna stand for that! So, this is one of those jokes that’s grounded in truth. It might rub some folks the wrong way, but it’s not necessarily untrue. Where I stand, I don’t think he really did anything wrong. After all, that’s how comedians handle folks who they feel are interrupting their show, and the joke itself was par for the Lopez course. I wouldn’t say it was “haha funny”, but it wasn’t wrong.

Somehow, the Atlanta Falcons blew a 25-point lead, allowing the New England Patriots to mount an amazing comeback and win their 5th Super Bowl title. It was the first Super Bowl to go into overtime. There was Edelman’s amazing catch. Some are calling it the most exciting game of football ever. But in the end there can only be one winner, and that was the Patriots. So, with that in mind, the New England Patriots had the West Week Ever.

After a struggle to raise money after the old barn was destroyed and a fight with the insurance company, the day has finally come. The new structure which is part of a whole new complex will open in 2019. I can’t wait!!!

***** A personal note: I heard a comedian the other day talking about jerks in all parts of our lives. Whether it be church, work, school, concerts, an AA meeting or whatever there is always an asshole in the mix to ruin stuff. This really resonated with me because I have seen a situation lately that perfectly illustrates this. A local store has a department with 3 managers. Manager #1 keeps hiring in his friends that mostly create their own schedules and do not often break a sweat. Manager #2 has been there a while and things run pretty smooth and fair when they run the day. Manager #3 is new to the position and often seems like they do not know what the fuck is going on and it was recently learned that this one has been backstabbing #2 so much that # 2 was fired. Now, we can’t know, of course, the reason for the firing but it just shows that a perfectly nice place to work and shop with a company one can believe in can go all wrong because of one or two bad apples. Manager #2 who is also battling illness (so does not often have the strength to fight back) has lost a career and many employees who respect them are now stuck working with people they know will run the place into the ground or having to find another job. I have seen a few similar situations thru the years and of course, asshole in chief in D.C. is like the all time perfect example of this but why can’t we weed out the jerks?  

***** Days alert: Is Paul leaving? What? They need to bring in a good mate for him. He is arguably the most honest person in town and he deserves the best. Let Will and Sonny have each other and find a better match for Paul but don’t let him go. I mean Sonny treats Paul like he isn’t even in the room half the time and they were going to marry?!  But, yes.. Chris Sean (Paul) is going and Bryan R. Dattilo (Lucas) may go soon too. Marci Miller (Abby) is out and will be replaced by the old Abby, Kate Mansin. Arianne Zucker (Nicole) will be back. Will she have a baby for Eric? Olivia Rose Keegar (Claire) has released a single titled ‘Just my type.’** Are they really gonna do a Ben and Ciara thing?** Sephen Nichols (Patch) is out as well as Greg Rikkaart (Leo). Farah Fath (Mimi Lockhart) is back. Sheila, Shawn and Belle will show up soon.  Kyle Lowder who used to play Brady will return as another character. There is a rumor that Allison Sweeney (Sami) will swing in for a bit and will she be pregnant with Rafe’s baby? I am betting so since Hope just mentioned something about Raif not having any kids.

***** The Philadelphia Eagles were cancelled at the White House because most of them would not come. Philly’s mayor countered with:” Trump is not a true patriot but a fragile egomaniac obsessed with crowd size and afraid of the embarrassment of throwing a party to which no one wants to attend.”  The night before, Fox news showed pics of Eagles kneeling when in fact they were praying as they always do. Nobody said there was anything wrong with that before so the players would like to know what is wrong with praying? This particular team never took a knee all season as protest. And what about the 10 players who wanted to go to the White house and worked hard to get there?** Scary Clown says he won’t even invite the NBA champs.

***** Illinois ratified the ERA. Just 1 more state and 36 years after the deadline to adopt legislation we may get there.

***** So, I see Domino’s latest stunt is fixing the roads? Somebody has to work on the infrastructure so it might as well be them.

***** The MtV awards best dressed to me were Alison Brie and Kristen Bell. While the chaos engulfed our country, the young people at the awards (the so called Hollywood elite), spoke out for real super heroes, acceptance for all and an end to bullying.

***** Should we be giving Dennis Rodman airtime to show how stupid he is? I hear the argument  over and over lately that someone was nice to them so they must be ok. This could be said of Trump, Kim Jung Un or a serial killer. How fucking selfish can people be?  The ignorant seem to be incapable of seeing the horror right in front of them as they pick and choose facts.

***** Artifacts were found in Springfield, Il. which came from the 1908 race riots. First found in 2014 when work was being done on an underpass, officials hope to soon have them on display. After working to preserve the items, they are looking to the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress.

Most awards went to The Band’s Visit, Harry Potter and the cursed child and Angels in America. Once on an Island won best revival and other winners were Glenda Jackson and Nathan Lane (who I love but was really pulling for Michael Cera and Brian Tyree Henry). Tony Shalhoub, Laurie Metcalf and Andrew Garfield also took home awards.  The most beautiful moment was from the students of Stoneman Douglas and their teacher who was honored.** A Trump supporter went to A Bronx tale: The musical after the DeNiro incident which is codirected by Mr. D. The supporter held up a Trump 2020 sign. My son chuckled, “At least he bought a ticket.”

***** IHOP has become IHOB. They think they are Red Robin. More $ in burgers than pancakes, I guess.

***** Stephen Colbert sang the National anthem at a Mets game.** Trump is taking swipes at the late night hosts now. Conan, Colbert and Fallon teamed up to do a funny about that.

***** So some people think that Roseanne’s racist remarks and Samantha Bee’s ‘cunt’ comment are the same? Both should lose their show? NO.. big difference.  Other countries do not get our outrage.. The word ‘cunt’ is not as big a deal in Canada and Great Britain. If there is fall out shouldn’t standards and practices at TBS be in trouble for letting the ‘feckless cunt’ comment go to broadcast? I mean Roseanne did this on her twitter on her own. Trump cult members think they can all go to twitter and spout their racist, hateful rhetoric and get away with it. If one is going to be successful in the mainstream world, they may not get away with that like Scary Clown. Anyway, Go Samantha Bee!!**BTW,  Love the letter that Michael Moore put out about Trump and Roseanne, it is worth a read.** ABC will let the others serve out their contracts after a settlement with Roseanne when they bring us The Conners.

Destroy NATO, Destroy EU, Destroy the UN, Eliminate U.S. leadership. ** As June ends, there are new reports that North Korea has ramped up its Nuclear production.

***** This whole mess with 2,000 kids being taken from their parents at the border is an outrage. I can’t help but think of our ‘well meaning’ Christian folk trying to convert the Native Americans back in the day. They tried hard to make the natives dress like the white man, pray like the white man and go to our schools. As well as leverage for scary clown’s wall, are they trying to fill these children’s heads with their own propaganda while they are in foster care or residing in the white man’s warehouse? **When will the loyalists realize that a wall cannot be built? Private citizens own some of that land. There are bodies of water on the border. No matter how much the racists wish for it, it just can’t be done.** There is something about the way he grins crazily when he is called out on something. It seems like he is so proud of his lies and the way he conducts himself so unethically. I am reminded of Manson and the way he would light up when asked about his crimes or when he was shown footage from other family members talking about him. This is such a fast moving story that some are equating to the way the Jewish and the Japanese were treated in the past. ** It is obvious that no planning went into any of this new policy. It is wonderful that so many reporters are watching the facilities they know about and staying at the border. It takes time to get the facts and it isn’t easy when the administration is being so secretive. The lawsuits have started. Can we get Sessions, Nielsen, Pence and Trump on child neglect??** People of all nations will not want to be here soon and we will be left with the racists and bullies. Do we leave or do we fight?  If everybody left the Trumpers alone in this country what would they have to complain about? They have no empathy, it is like they thrive on others suffering. ** Multiple on air personalities cried at the stories of the children as their emotions came to the surface. I think many of us feel helpless as that sinking feeling we all had on election night has come to the point we all feared.** The Red Cross has not even been allowed in to these FOR PROFIT facilities. Protesters are staying on the case of Krisjen Nielsen. The administration and their defenders have been so flippant about the whole thing especially Corey (womp, womp) Lewandowski.** It costs the government over twice as much to house the kids without their parents.** Melania visited the kids and wore a jacket which read ‘I really don’t care, Do you?’ This started a whole new mess. I thought of those Turpin monster parents. Why on earth does anyone want to put kids in cages?  Does it make someone powerful to torture children?

***** June ended with about 700 protests for the kids in cages. Family’s Belong Together marches were overflowing in the heat with inspiring messages and a lot of heart. I was so proud to be there.

***** New York has sued the federal government over zero tolerance.**The U.S. has withdrawn from the UN human rights body. Many do agree with this one for they feel there is not equal punishment for nations when it comes to human rights.** A lawsuit was filed on April 23 alleging kids were held down and injected to render them helpless and keep them calm.**It seems that we should leave the immigrants alone and enforce swift, harsh penalties for those who hire undocumented workers. These employees aren’t paying their fair share on these employees.**The Pentagon has been asked to prepare housing for 20,000 immigrants.** I mean, this is not a simple subject but basically if you come in illegally, you go back. If you seek asylum, you should not be separated from your child or be in detention. More judges would help get this backlog caught up and ankle bracelets had seemed to be helping the situation. Take some of this ‘traveling to Mar a Lago $’ and hire more judges. And let’s help stabilize these regimes so folks will feel safer in their own countries. Some are even saying they should abolish I.C.E.. Some of those speaking out with that thought are I.C.E. agents themselves. I.C.E. spokesperson James Schwab has been speaking out. He claims he resigned because although he was asked to spin for both administrations, the current administration asked him to outright lie. This reverses the lower court’s rulings but at least it is the third incarnation as the first two were struck down. Even though the Supreme court said the President has the authority it did put it somewhat in check. Still wrong.  0 people have been killed in our country by a person from one of these countries.** The Supreme Court also tells us you don’t have to pay your union dues. ** Justice Kennedy is set to retire. The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother 

James McBride

There may not be a more complex person in all of literature than Ruth McBride, James McBride's mother and the central figure in his autobiography, The Color of Water. The book gives the personal history of Ruth, a woman born an Orthodox Jew in Poland in 1921 who began passing as a light-skinned Black woman after moving to the United States. McBride tells two tales: the incredible story of Ruth's life interspersed with details of his own — and the way Ruth's wisdom helped guide him from an impoverished childhood to his success as an adult.

Trevor Noah

Born a Crime is comedian and Daily Show host Trevor Noah's essay collection about growing up as the son of a black Xhosa woman and a white Swiss man in South Africa during Apartheid. The book is framed as a memoir about Noah's experience growing up, and at the core of that is Noah's relationship with his own mother, who was forced to keep Noah a secret for much of his early childhood. The book is part coming-of-age story and part ode to a woman who went to extraordinary lengths to secure a better life for her son.

The Paper Menagerie

Ken Liu

Ken Liu's The Paper Menagerie is a wildly inventive sci-fi story collection filled with gods, robots, a girl with an ice cube for a heart, and more. The title story, "The Paper Menagerie," contains an unforgettable and tragic tale of motherhood, told in just a few short pages. A: Aptitude

1. what are your oc’s natural abilities, things they’ve been doing since young?

He’s been a violin and cooking prodigy all his life, and was the first two skills he was taught. Cooking was sort of something he did on his own with the other slaves, specifically Cael who also loved baking and worked more in the kitchen, but playing music was specifically what he was raised and made to do.

2. what activities have they participated in?

Composing, playing music, baking, cooking, a little bit of flying, and the greatest activity of parenting.

3. what abilities do they have that they’ve worked for?

Physical prowess. Since he was a slave, he never was taught to fight and so physically grew up weak and small, so when he met Luna, the two of them sparred and worked out with each other to keep their strength, but he was really taught to fight when they met Oberon. He’s still not the best, but he can definitely hold his own in a match of hand to hand combat. Plus he’s got them baker arms so he’s got some muscles.

4. what things are they bad at?

He’s still learning how to say no to people, especially his friends. He doesn’t like any of them sad but he also knows that he has to be the responsible adult and take care of them all.

5. what is their most impressive talent?

It’s a tie between baking and music. He has been a cooking and violin prodigy since he was 5.

Up straight with knees and toes pointed forward. He is still conditioned to sit like a slave, pretty and silent.

He usually sleeps curled inward since when he was little, he and Cael would face each other curled while Evie lay in the middle of the sibling sleep pile. Now with Ciri, he just holds her all night.

3. what is their ideal comfort day?

Never having to get out of his pjs while he snuggles with his wife and children all day watching movies.

4. what is their major comfort food? why?

Not a lot of people know because he doesn’t eat it a lot, but burgers always make him happy. He really is the barbecue dad but like, objectively better.

5. who is the best at comforting them when down?

Luna or Ciri. His two best girls.

D: Decoration

1. how would they decorate a house if they had one under their name?

Tam would have a comfortable but functional home with a lot of pictures of his family and friends, couches for lounging, and of course, the biggest kitchen space with every frivolous kitchen thing possible.

2. how would they decorate their child’s room?

Tam is pretty good about letting his kids dress themselves and decorate their room to how they like, but he is very concerned about safety. He does give a lot of toys to the kids that match their likes and aesthetics, but he is the type of dad who will put a barrier between the child and the edge of the bed so they don’t accidentally roll off in the middle of the night.

3. how do they decorate their own room?

His room is immaculately clean and doesn’t have much things in it except his violin stand, a night light, pictures of him and Luna, him and Ciri, and family pictures. He probably has the cleanest room of anyone in the ship. Now that it’s pretty much become both his and Ciri’s room, it looks more lived in.

4. what type of clothes and accessories do they wear?

He’s a dapper boi who usually wears button ups, sweater vests, slacks, and dress shoes.

5. do they like makeup/nail/beauty trends?

He likes makeup as a concept but since he was forced to wear it as a slave, he loathes anything that makes him more cosmetic than just having really nice skin and a rockin dad bod.

E: External Personality

1. does the way they do things portray their internal personality?

Yeah, he basically is a walking anxiety attack with dad instincts. The only thing that may be hard for people to believe is that when he’s with people he’s completely comfortable with, he is the snark king and will roast you with love.

2. do they do things that conform to the norm?

He conforms to the norm on the ship, which is just everyone doing their part to help win the war, but he broke away from the norm as a child when he left his siblings to run away with Luna.

3. do they follow trends or do their own thing?

He doesn’t like being a leader very much, but either right behind or on par with a leader, which is why he gets along with Luna so well.

4. are they up-to-date on the internet fads?

Only through Val because she shares almost every meme she finds with him.

5. do they portray their personality intentionally or let people figure it outon their own?

He doesn’t have enough confidence to lead anyone on, so he really is the objectively best anxious boy. What you see is what you get.

F: Fun

1. what do they do for fun?

Compose music, watch movies with the kids and Ciri, or spar with Luna.

2. what is their ideal party?

Chilling on the sofa altogether watching a movie or having a family game night.

3. who would they have the most fun with?

Luna or Ciri.

4. can they have fun while conforming to rules?

Yeah, there isn’t a lot of rules on the ship and Tam is not very rambunctious, so he is not like some of the other problem children and will turn a couch over and hotbox in the rec room.

5. do they go out a lot?

Since he is very well known as a revolutionary, he tends to stay on the ship pretty often, but even on planets, he doesn’t really like going to the nightlife scenes.

G: Gorgeous

1. what is their most attractive external feature?

This man is really out here sporting baker arms that could lift you to give you a smooch.

2. what is the most attractive part of their personality?

He is the type of guy where you look at him and you jump straight to husband material no matter your sexuality.

3. what benefits come with being their friend?

You will always have a personal theme song guy and someone to make all your favorite comfort foods. He is also just an objectively good hugger.

4. what parts of them do they like and dislike?

He likes his protectiveness and his paternal instincts, but he really wishes he wasn’t as anxious to get what he wants.

5. what parts of others do they envy?

He really wishes he could act with reckless abandon.

H: Heat

1. do they rather a hot or cold room?

He doesn’t like too hot of a room, but he likes sleeping with just one blanket, so if it’s cool but not cold, he enjoys that.

2. do they prefer summer or winter?

Although he likes wearing long sleeves, winter reminds him of the Caritain parties which is when he was requested most, so he has a very uncomfortable relationship with winter.

3. do they like the snow?

He thinks its pretty, but it reminds him of Caritain, so he still gets a little uncomfortable around it.

4. do they have a favorite summer activity?

Beach volleyball, actually. The ship converts the pool area to a volleyball court.

5. do they have a favorite winter activity?

Making hot chocolate and lighting candlenights tree with the kids.

I: In-the-closet

1. what is their sexuality?

2. have they ever questioned their sexuality?

Sexuality was always fluid on Caritain, but he figured that he would never fall in love because he only grew up with either his siblings or older slaves.

No, especially because of his trauma with the beauty industry, he doesn’t like many things feminine for himself.

4. would/was their family be okay with them being LGBT?

He doesn’t know what his parents would ever say, but he’s pretty sure that Cael and Evangeline would be okay with him because nearly everyone on Caritain has had affairs with multiple genders.

5. how long would/did it take for them to come out?

He officially came out to Luna when he was sixteen, after they met Gabriel for the first time and he was smitten as fuck.

1. what makes them happy?

Playing the violin and baking

2. who makes them happy?

His best friends Luna and Nivviah, his wonderful wife Ciri, and his twenty children.

Beauty and the Beast

4. are they happy often?

Happiness is actually his second most felt emotion, behind crippling anxiety. It’s not extremely often, but he is one of the happiest adults on the ship.

5. what brings them the most joy in the world?

Playing music, baking, and Ciri.

1. have they ever thought about suicide?

No, mostly because he feels too guilty about leaving the people who depend on him behind.

2. have they ever thought about homicide?

He’s a former slave, his wife was going to be a sex slave, and several of his children were either used as experiments, slaves, or forced to fight in a televised death match, so yes, he’s thought about homicide a lot.

3. if they could kill anyone without punishment, would they? who?

If he could kill his former owners and Ciri’s would-be owner, he would without second thought.

Everyone on the Freedom Vessel because Tam is an absolute angel.

1. would they want a daughter or a son?

Bold of you to assume that Tam would stop at just one child. Also incredibly bold of you to assume that Ciri would stop at seven children.

2. how many children do they want?

He was good with four, but really the question is how many children does Ciri want?

3. would they be a good parent?

He is the best dad in the galaxy, ex-fucking-cuse you sir. He loves all of his fourteen children with all his heart and nothing will ever change that.

4. what would they name a son? what would they name a daughter?

For a daughter, he’d first probably name them after his favorite non-wife (so Luna, Valerie, or Nivviah), but since he’s marrying Ciri and he knew how much both she and Psyche loved Alma, would also take Alma as a name. And of course, Evangeline and Cael would be his first choices as his fallen siblings he left behind.

It’s how he got every single one of his children, so yes.

1. what would they never do?

Hurt his wife or children in any capacity (except in Mario Kart, because he can and will destroy you)

It’s not really possible at the moment, and he won’t bring it up to anyone because he knows its impossible, but he actually really wants a biological child with Ciri.

Enjoy processed and fake foods.

That one time he got drunk and started telling everyone how much he loved them.

When he was a child, he’d never thought he’d be one of the leading figures of the revolution alongside someone he’d never thought he’d be best friends with.

He lies more on the pessimistic side of the spectrum. He firsthand has experienced the worst of Genesis and doesn’t think anything can change them.

He’s fairly more pessimistic but he doesn’t say it that often. With his friends, he’ll be more optimistic to give them hope, but Tam in particular doesn’t think that things will get better anytime soon.

He’s very contemplative, so he tends to give good advice, and he’s done it for about fifteen years.

His kids throw optimism on him a lot, but for the most part, the optimism from the og revolutionaries came from Nivviah and Gabriel.

He’s been pessimistic since he was a child as a slave.

He cares with all his being, and will do anything he can to make sure you know you’re loved and adored.

As stated plenty of times, this boy is so anxious he is barely functioning 40% of the time.

Luna adores Tam’s devotion to family and his fatherly nature, and his ability to forgive, Val loves his carefulness and dedication to learning about a person on an intimate level, and Ciri loves everything about him.

Luna envies his ability to get to close to people so quickly and Val envies his ability to be a good parent despite his fears.

5. do they hate anything about their personality/about other’s personalities?

He hates his own anxiety and self doubt, but also doesn’t like when anyone is too arrogant.

Yes, but he also thinks its important to do things for yourself. This in more so of the case of waiting for someone to rescue you. If you have the opportunity to be free, you need to take it.

He only had schooling under Oberon when they first met him, but he tends to ask a lot of questions at once by writing all of his thoughts down and formulating them into questions.

Not typically, but it depends on the type of questions because Tam’s always uncomfortable. If its about the present, he’s fine, but he hates answering things about his past.

Only to Luna because she’s still the only person who’s used to when he gets weird. (He did once in fact ask if pigeons have feelings when he was really sick)

5. are they curious?

When it comes to experimenting with recipes or compositions, he’s very curious, but when it comes to adventuring, he doesn’t like going off the beaten path very much.

R: Rules

1. do they follow rules?

As a revolutionary, he kind of has to break rules, but when he was little, he followed all of the rules to keep himself or his siblings from getting hurt.

2. would they be a strict or laid-back parent?

He’s a less extreme version of Marlin from Finding Nemo who is so afraid of every small thing that can kill his children. He is laid back in the sense that he’ll let the kids do things that make them happy, but if there is a chance they could get hurt, he will be ultra dad and baby proof the ship.

3. have they ever been consequenced for breaking a rule?

Oh absolutely. It’s why he has so many scars on his body.

4. have they broken any rules they now regret breaking?

All the explicit rules he’s broken have been for the better because it caused him to be free, but he does regret breaking his personal rule of family before all else.

5. do they find any rules they/others follow absolutely ridiculous?

He understands that slaves live in fear of their masters, but he also finds it ridiculous that they don’t take their chance at freedom 

S: Streets

1. are they street-smart?

A little? He mostly lived on the street the first year and a half after Luna rescued him from Caritain while they lived in the Factory District of Spanathos. So he knew how to steal and barter.

2. would they give money to someone on the streets?

Absolutely. He knows what it’s like to have no money.

3. have they ever gotten in a fight on the streets?

He had to defend himself, Nivviah, and Gabriel against a gang on Helios.

4. has anything happened to them on the streets?

When he was on Helios, he and Nivviah got jumped by a gang sent by the Helian Parliament. It was the same instance when Gabriel got captured.

5. are they cautious when out?

He is always overly cautious at every moment of his waking day, even while he sleeps.

T: Truth

1. are they honest?

For the most part. He never actively lies, but he doesn’t like sharing much about his past.

2. can they tell if someone is lying?

He is pretty good about people trying to deceive him, but he likes giving people the benefit of the doubt, especially when they’re his loved ones. He has a +5 to insight.

3. is it obvious when they’re lying?

A little, since he gets red when he lies.

4. have they lied about anything they regret lying about?

Not particularly, he’s really only lied for other people.

5. have they told truths that have been spread against their will?

No, people are usually very good around his secrets because they like him and respect his wishes.

U: Underdog

1. have they been bullied?

He grew up as a slave, so yes.

2. have they bullied anyone?

Tam has never bullied anyone in his life, even after Castor dropped and shattered his souffle bowl.

3. have they been physically attacked by a bully?

Judging by the multitude of scars on his body, he’s been attacked a lot.

4. have they ever been doubted?

He was doubted by almost everyone he ever met before going on the Freedom Vessel, possibly except for Luna.

5. have they surprised people with being good at something?

He surprised almost everyone he’s met, and everyone in 

V: Vomit

1. do they vomit often?

He only vomits when he’s extremely nervous, which to be fair is pretty often, but he’s good at keeping it down until he’s alone, at which point he goes straight for the toilet. 

2. do they get lots of stomach aches?

Yes. Just yes. He lives the true anxiety life.

3. are they good at comforting someone ill?

He has always been the dad friend who rubs his friends’ back when they’re drunk and throwing up (mostly Luna and Val).

4. what do they like as far as comfort goes?

He likes people rubbing his back or massaging his scalp.

5. do they burp, cough, or hiccup most when nauseous? when vomiting?

He usually coughs, but when actively vomiting, he tries to keep anything from happening so he can curb it.

W: Water

1. do they drink enough water?

As the cook and a father, he has to be an advocate for good health, so he drinks water to keep himself healthy.

2. have they learned to swim?

Luna taught him to swim when they got on the Freedom Vessel.

3. do they like to swim?

He doesn’t do it a lot, but he finds it enjoyable with other people who like it. He finds it calming to swim with Luna.

4. can they dive?

Yes, but it’s not very pretty. He prefers slowly walking into the water rather than diving in. 

5. can they swim without holding their nose?

Yes.

X: Xylophone

1. what is their favorite genre of music?

Violins and classical music for days.

2. do they have a favorite song?

Hallelujah will always be a special one for him, but since meeting Ciri, his favorite song has slowly become All of Me by EGOT winner John Legend.

3. do they have a favorite band/artist/singer?

Contrary to popular relief, Alicia Keys. He really is out here drinking his respect women juice.

4. can they sing well?

Oh absolutely. He has the voice of an angel and is objectively the best singer on the ship. He and Flor could make a band.

5. can they rap?

He has rapped exactly once, and it was when he was very drunk on his 21st birthday while Luna, who was also very drunk, filmed. It was an experience and the video is still on Luna’s communicator.

Y: You

1. how old were you when you created them?

2. what inspired you to create them?

Ciri needed a boo that was as soft as her.

3. were they different when they were first created?

A little bit? He has a lot more backstory than when he was first created, but for the most part he’s been the same good biscuit boy as always.

4. do you enjoy writing them more than other characters?

He’s super sweet and is less sarcastic and sassy than the others are, so I like getting to play a sof boy.

5. what’s your favorite thing about them?

He’s been through so much and still wants to help people and be a good person.

Z: Zebra

1. what’s their favorite animal?

Prairie dogs. Don’t ask him why, he just finds them adorable.

2. do they like animals?

Not particularly. He grew up surrounded around abused animals and had to take care of them, so now connects animals to how he grew up as a slave.

3. cats or dogs?

Cats. He can’t handle loud sudden noises, so would not be able to handle any kind of dog bark.

4. what’s their dream pet?

Anything small that doesn’t make loud noises. He’d be fine with a fish honestly. He’d rather have a lot of children than a lot of pets.

5. do they have any pets at the moment?

Nope but he has six wonderful children, maybe nine in the future.
