It's Lila's birthday, and she decides to give the day off to her crew, thinking that she might be spending hers alone with Kell. Little does she know that Kell has other plans in mind. Kell and Lila have a sweet and eventful date, so expect fluff. <3 Rating: T Words: 3,814

SEPTEMBER 2023 WRAP UP
[ loved liked ok no thanks (reread) book club* DNF ]
The Anomaly | Not the Witch You Wed | A Pale Light In the Black | (My Volcano)* | Klara and the Sun | Our Hideous Progeny | (A Gathering of Shadows) | A Dangerous Collaboration | Empire of Sand | (A Darker Shade of Magic) | Scattered Showers | A Treacherous Curse | Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz | The Hanged Man | Magic Below Stairs | The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy | The City & The City | The Splinter in the Sky
* * * * *
Magic Below Stairs was a charming middle-grade spin off to the Cecelia & Kate series, I had a good time and would be more than happy to read more books in this world!
The Hanged Man was the second in the Tarot Sequence, and still great! Not perfect, but the characters are so fun and the plots are extremely intense, I loved reading this. The haunted ship was scarier than the actual haunted ship horror book I just read.
Sir Hereward and Mister Fitz…bad. You took this amazing set up and look what you did with it! You made it generic and boring and feeling outdated. Justice for the centuries-old, animated, sentient, sorcerous, gender-fluid puppet who deserved better (to be the main character, to start)
(Veronica Speedwell is of course, fun as always. I have unfortunately now hit the books with longer hold times and am very D: about it)
Scattered Showers was a very heartwarming collection! Perfectly (and maybe, best) suited for fans of the author’s novels. Perhaps a little one-note, but a good read. I love the cover design a lot :D
This is the first time I’ve reread the Shades of Magic books since I finished the series in 2018. I loved them dearly. But my tastes shifted dramatically between then and now… ADSOM is ok. A decently solid fantasy novel, but not one that’s delivering what I want these days. A Gathering of Shadows, however, is a hot mess. I already did some yelling about it but there’s really not a plot, the storyline seems forced, and as asexualbookbird put it, it’s really just Book 3: The Prequel. I don’t know if reading it for the first time would be better? Mostly I was bored and irritated and would have loved to quit.
Somebody help me out, was there hype for Empire of Sand? Because I feel like there was, and I was so let down. The world building was beautiful, but it felt like absolutely nothing happened for the entire middle of the book? And the romantic elements weren’t enough to tempt me, I’d have loved this if it had gone full political intrigue instead.
I’m not a Frankenstein person, but I had a great time with Our Hideous Progeny! I’m a sucker for historical fiction with smart female characters, even if I wanted to strangle a lot of the men, lol. I might have zoned out a bit during the denser paleontological bits, but I look forward to future work by the author.
Klara and the Sun is another one I don’t quite understand the love for, it just wasn’t for me.
My Volcano. YES. IT IS BACK AGAIN. FOR BOOKCLUB AGAIN EVEN. This is such a complicated book that only two of us managed to finish it for book club when we first read it last year. Now that we have some new recruits we decided to try it again (no luck alas). BUT I am still not over it, check out my tag for more yelling. Right now I’m trying to convince the group to *not* do a third read next year and maybe try one of the author’s other books (and the author followed me back on Twitter! I got irrationally excited lol)
I was a bit nervous going into A Pale Light in the Black, having had some flops from the person who rec’d this previously, but it was so fun! ‘Space Coast Guard’ is not a thing that would immediately leap to mind as something I’d be interested in, but this goes *hard* on the found family vibes and spends just as much time on the characters’ emotions as it does on the plot, in addition to being super queer! The plot is a little clunky being split in two different directions with the investigation and the military games, but I still had such a good time (and speaking from the future, book 2 does improve on that!)
When will I learn my lesson about contemporary romance? Regardless of the fact that the plot for Not the Witch You Wed could have been ripped from one of the many many Teen Wolf fics I’ve read and enjoyed, we did *not* get along. Sigh.
I’m not sure what I was expecting from The Anomaly, but I think it was something more? Probably because it was a translation? Idk, I don’t find the “are we just a simulation” discussion particularly compelling (and My Volcano deals with related topics in more interesting ways), and the rest couldn’t hold me. Really wish I’d DNF’d this one, but I pushed though in hope.
The actual DNF’s -
The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy I wanted to like. I enjoy quirky world building, but it felt like a contemporary romance masquerading as a fantasy - accompanied by all those pesky cr tropes that annoy me. Most of the characters were irritating me as well, and I didn’t want to forgive Hart, even if I understand why he was being so awful, so I decided to quit before I worked myself up too far.
The City & The City had a cool concept, but after 25% I still wasn’t interested. I’d maybe try something else from Mieville, but this wasn’t for me.
The Splinter in the Sky is a book that probably looked fantastic as an outline. But when it came to filling it out and connecting the dots, well…it was lacking a lot. Readable, maybe not worth the effort, but I’d give the author another try on a future work.

After missing out on the hype for so long, @jessi-raptor’s constant praise for ADSOM got me to sit down and give it a read. I’m about half way in after a day and iN LOVE with these beautiful babies. Bless you, @veschwab. Bless you.

Mid Year Freakout Tag!
Tagged by the always wonderful @over-a-rainbow.
1. Best book you have read in 2021 so far?
The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin. Absolutely beautiful and compelling and weird in the best way.
2. Best Sequel You’ve Read In 2021 So Far?
Gonna have to cheat and dip back into late 2020 because most of what I've read this year have been stand-alone or first in a series and of the two sequels I've read, calling either 'best' seems questionable. So, I'm going with Saints Astray by Jacqueline Carey, both because it managed to be super fun and also to make me cry at the same time, and because it was something so completely different than the first book (Santa Olivia) but still felt like an organic continuation of the story.
3.A New Release You Want To Check Out?
The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker. Kind of cheating with this as well, in that I still haven't read The Golem and the Jinni, but my wife read it a few years back and it's been on my to-read list since due to her rave reviews. I'm looking forward to reading both soon (though 'soon' could mean tomorrow or two years from now at the rate I go.)
4. Most Anticipated Book Release Of The Second Half Of The Year?
I don't know if there's anything I'm particularly looking forward to, though I welcome suggestions of things I should be anticipating! My only pre-order so far for the rest of 2021 is the Lore Olympus book, which I'm eagerly awaiting but, y'know, I've already read it online a couple of dozen times so...
5.Biggest Disapointment?
I hate to say it but the October Daye books, by Seanan McGuire. Not that they're bad just, I think I went into it with my expectations too high. It's got everything I love, but somehow I got three or four books in and just felt astoundingly meh about it.
6. Biggest Surprise?
The Darker Shade of Magic books by V.E. Schwab. It wasn't the series I expected it to be going in, and honestly I expected to be at least two tiers higher on the obsession chart with it than I am, but it did a lot of things that I didn't expect. The plot was mostly predictable and there are a lot of things you see coming from a mile away, but the joy of these books is definitely in the journey and the little things in between. Nothing shakes out exactly how you imagine which is enjoyable. She also does really fun things with her word choice and writing style. "Her words were hollow, and his own fear ricocheted inside them, filling the space." is possibly my favorite sentence.
7. Favorite New Author (Ether New To You Or Debut).
New implies that I don't just read the same five authors over and over. Honestly, my Kindle history is just like "Really? You're reading this again? You know there are hundreds of books in your account right? Fine, I guess here's (*insert any Dresden book, any of the Kushiel books, or the Phantom Tollbooth*)" This ignores David Eddings because when I reread his works I read from my print copies.
8. Favorite New Fictional Crush?
Toss up between Rhy the himbo prince, and Alucard the ludicrously named pirate, both from ADSOM. I mean, honestly that episode of Parks & Rec where they're talking about Game of Thrones and Donna's like "Everybody on that show can get it!"? That, but with the cast of that book series.
Honorable mention to Navani from Stormlight. Turns out once Sanderson lets her have POVs for something other than Dalinar's character development she's amazing and I both want her and want to be her? But this was also a late 2020 discovery so, honorable mention.
9. Newest Favorite Character?
Rereading The Elenium/Tamuli by David Eddings for the first time since I was a wee person and I fully did not appreciate Sparhawk and the sheer big d*ck energy he brings to the table as a child. I mean, my gods, the man is ridiculous.
10. A Book That Made You Cry?
None yet this year. Does @laurabeatrix 's fic beautiful short story inspired by contemporary works count? Legit the only story to make me cry so far this year.
11. A Book That Made You Happy?
Dawnshard by Sanderson. I ended up reading it out of order, because I agreed to read it with the wife and she reads slow, so I read Rhythm of War first and circled back to it when she got caught up (and then re-read half of Rhythm of War over her shoulder, which is what normally happens with new books that we're both fans of.) But it was such a perfect novella and I'm always glad for more Rysn.
12. Most Beautiful Book You Have Bought or Received This Year?
Aesthetically beautiful? Either our Way of Kings leatherbound books (can't remember if they arrived in 2020 or 2021) or that gorgeous Grim Oak edition of Storm Front.
Beautifully written has to go to The City We Became again. I'm actively in love with the way it's written.
13. What Book Do You Need To Read By The End Of The Year?
Clan of the Cave Bear - because it's a friend's "I've read this series fifteen times and I need to be able to geek out about it with other people!" series, and as someone who will not shut up about the Dresden Files, I feel morally obligated to read other peoples' unhealthy obsessions.
The Ruins of Gorlan - because I promised a fledgling nerd (friend's son) that I would read it. As someone who was once a fledgling nerd myself, I can recall being stoked any time one of my mom's super need friends either recommended something to me or took my recommendation so, time to pay it forward.
I'm not tagging anyone because, well, the only people I interact with on Tumblr with any regularity were already tagged in the original post 😂 But if you're seeing this and you're interested, consider yourself tagged.

I saw that you were taking book recommendations, so *cracks knuckles* here I go. If you liked Song if Achilles you should definitely read Circe by the same author, and if you like Six of Crows then A Darker Shade of Magic by VE Shwab is an amazing trilogy, and Vicous by the same author is also really good and has the same edgy vibes as Six of Crows. The Kyoshi novels are a must if you’re a fan of Avatar the Last Airbender. Anything by Brandon Sanderson is phenomenal, but specifically the series Mistborn is my current fave, it has a really unique magic system and the most accurate depiction of a woman battling with her femininity I’ve seen in a fantasy novel. No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai and A Little Life are also amazing, but only if you want to bawl your eyes out. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is an adorable story about two boys in Texas who fall in love that’ll warm your heart.
👀oh my G O D thank you so much for all these recs and all your thoughts on them they sound so good and i LOVE hearing about books 🥺🥺🥺🥺
i’ve been meaning to read adsom for like, ever KJDFHDKSJ like. politics, treachery, grifting, and MULTIPLE LONDONS????? DEEPLY MY SHIT!!!!!
i actually hadn’t even heard of the kyoshi novels jdkhfdksjf i thought atla's non-show canon was just the comics but i might check them out when i rewatch the show!
mistborn sounds good! i'll check it out when i have time :o i’m usually a little bit wary of sf/f by male authors but the premise sounds Intriguing as does your testimonial
i’ve been meaning to read a little life for a while but it’s just. SO long and i’ve been in a really weird headspace wrt reading recently bc of some family and mental health stuff, i’ve had a hard time reading books even half its length, even pulpy genre stuff i specifically choose to get out of reading slumps! but it’s something i’m VERY 👀👀👀 at, and i hadn’t heard of no longer human but it does sound right up my alley! i’ve been meaning to get into literary fiction (esp. asian literary fiction) and this sounds really interesting, if heartrending
ari and dante was nice! though i do wish i’d read it when it released, instead of like. five years later, it just gave me the vibe of one of those books you wish you’d grown up with, you know? because you can pinpoint a specific period in your life when you know it would have really Hit Different but you’re... not really there any more :(
thank you so much for the recs!!! i’ll be making a rec list of stuff i’ve read and loved over the past year or two and posting it some time the next couple days, most likely!

Recently I finished @veschwab’s A CONJURING OF LIGHT, the last book in the #adsom trilogy & this @jordandenenyc shirt is especially appropriate. “Anoshe” is the closest thing to Farewell in Arnesian, and this book is full of farewells - as can be expected for the 3rd in a trilogy. It’s been emotional. . . Anoshe is also relevant to a bit of my December mood. This is a season of festivity and love, but it’s also a season of endings as the winter takes hold and the year closes. My grandpa passed in December on his birthday 10 years ago now & I hadn’t realized it had been that long already. With the fictional character losses I’ve been reading & some other things, I’ve been thinking about how grief is a subtle knife - how it can be there & gone, sudden & sharp until it’s not. I guess that’s how you know those you love are never really gone & to cherish the time you have now. Anoshe is for solace. May you all have that this holiday season. 💗 . . . . Five Stars The art is to die for, and the cover is gorgeous. A must have for any ADSOM fan! Go to Amazon
Fantastic series starter for fans of fantasy - YA OR adult! This book was my first ever Schwab read, and I went into it a little bit apprehensive, because she is so widely loved that I wondered if this series would live up to the expectations I had for it. I picked it up for the Life & Lit June group read, and ended up putting it off until the last possible minute because I was so wary, but my nervousness was entirely unfounded. This book was phenomenal! Go to Amazon
A Must Have!!! EXCELLENT!!! If you haven't read it yet, stop what you're doing and read it now. You've never encountered another book like it. I don't even know where to begin! The world building is glorious and so unique, the simple descriptions of colours completely transforming the different Londons. The story was engaging and absolutely epic. While it was a slower start, that allowed the chance to become more immersed in the world and become more familiar with the characters and the lore. And speaking of characters... *swoons* I don't know how to pick a favourite! Side characters were fantastic (love you, Rhy!), and of course the main characters steal the show, but I'm not sure who to adore more! Kell is a fantastic mystery, but Lila is one of fantasy's best female heroes. And on top of all of that, the action! So intense, way more than I expected it to be. Honestly, I could go on and on about how amazing this book is, but I've already got the sequel in my hand, and I need to get started with it, because I am not ready for this adventure to be over. Go to Amazon
Good world building is so important to books because it ... The first book set up the idea of the different Londons: magic-less grey London, vibrant red London, starving and desperate white London, and decimated, dead black London. Each built upon a foundation of London but developed in completely different fashions. Their cultures, religion, speech, manner and being is so unique in each world. Go to Amazon
A gripping dark fantasy series with compelling characters and worlds at stake. Remarkable author. Creates a new world: four of ... Five Stars Loved this book, get lost in the many shades of London! Five Stars A new fan of V.E. Schwab. This is SO BEAUTIFUL.

✨Tweety's Follower Celebration ✨
Tumblr media
This is the umpteenth time I pass a milestone and I couldn't help but celebrate with fan fiction requests and edit requests (which is what was voted the most on a poll I did awhile ago). First of all, thank you for following me! It's always shocking when people appreciate what I write and I'm glad that you enjoy the content I post 💜
Tumblr media
As a thank you, I will take 3 fan fiction requests and 5 edit requests. I'd love if you requested it without anon but I will also grant anon requests. If I get more than the allotted requests, I will select the ones I like the most. I'm more inclined to accept requests from people who ask without anon. 😜 I will only write about TID/TLH (about any ship or character, I really don't mind even if it's about someone you've never seen me post). No one writes about your favorite blorbo or ship? Give me an idea and I will! I just need a ship or character + a prompt + eventually a genre. You can also tell me more. The edit request, on the other hand, can be about any fandom you've seen me post on this blog (TSC, SOC, Adsom, Lockwood & Co... Go through my posts 3 tag on my tumblr lol).
Just send me an ask 💜
