Blurb:
Teodora di Sangro is used to hiding her magical ability to transform enemies into music boxes and mirrors. Nobody knows she’s a strega—and she aims to keep it that way.
The she meets Cielo—and everything changes.
A strega who can switch outward form as effortlessly as turning a page in a book, Cielo shows Teodora what her life could be like if she masters the power she’s been keeping secret. And not a moment too soon: the ruler of Vinalia has poisoned the patriarchs of the country’s five controlling families, including Teodora’s father, and demands that each family send a son to the palace.
If she wants to save her family, Teodora must travel to the capital—not disguised as a boy, but transformed into one. But the road to the capital, and to bridling her powers, is full of enemies and complications, including the one she least expects: falling in love.

Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy
Challenge #1 ~ “ A book with a main character whose name starts with A, T, or Y."
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
My opinion in three sentences:
Capetta and McCarthy craft a really fun, fast-paced adventure in this retelling of the Arthurian legend, a alongside some great rep (much of which is own voices, too!) The plot certainly keeps the reader on their toes and incorporates (rather cleverly, by and large) lots of the key elements from the original legend. However, at times the pacing is off, featuring both large time jumps and some very slow momentum, which can cause the novel to drag and prove a little disorientating.
(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:
Retellings can always be a bit of a difficult balancing act - you want them to offer a fresh take, but at the same time they need some familiarity and link back to the original. Capetta and McCarthy nail this, offering a total reimagining that is still packed with so many nods towards the legend. And, arguably best of all, whilst many of the overall plot arcs and character traits are canon, they're presented in a way that surprises even the most well-versed in the original!
A warning for the book:
Sometimes the pace was glacial and this only exacerbated the feeling that the book was longer than it needed to be. Take, for example, the final few chapters - a short paragraph or two would set up a great cliffhanger, and those chapters are actually well-suited as a start for book two as they offer a great middle ground between recapping and introducing a new plot point (I did have to go back to check I hadn't missed some sort of "sneak-peek" signposting!) Will I continue the series? Maybe. Maybe not. I guess it comes down to how much effort I want to exert whilst reading when the time comes that a) I'm in the mood for such a book, and b) book two has been released!
Recommended for fans of:
- Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
- Obsidio by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
- The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer
