OKAY. let's clarify some stuff for people who are confused:
the entire episode is not a dream sequence. aside from that just being lazy, it's also not what the editing is communicating. this show is very good at editing in a dreamlike, slightly disjointed way; it's part of what contributes to it feeling so intimate and personal, and nothing about that editing really changed in episode 6 except for when it got dramatic RIGHT at the end, but i'm gonna address that particular tone change under the cut for those who want spoilers
the show intercuts flashbacks throughout, even dispersing flashbacks of what appears to be the same scene (therapy) through multiple episodes, and intercutting current dialogue with flashbacks (jaewon's brother flashbacks with his father's voice). the last five minutes MIGHT be a flash forward, which means that a lot of the coupley stuff left from the trailer could be coming up in episode 7 either as a lead-up to the inevitable or afterwards in flashback form, but again, i'm leaving my personal thoughts on that for under the cut
ALSO, he definitely says "boyfriend". he says "남자 친구" which literally translates to "namja - man, chingu - friend" and used together like that is the colloquially understood term for "boyfriend" in korean; it is sometimes shorted to "남친" (namchin) but BLs haven't reached that point yet. REGARDLESS, even though that technically translates to "male friend" SO DOES FUCKING BOYFRIEND. the only other word is "애인" (aein) which you may have heard, but it's gender neutral.
the context of that interaction is important. he says friend, the attendant clearly notices the implication and says "oh a girlfriend?" and he responds with "no, a boyfriend" and then the cashier gives him romantic fireworks. it was not an accident or a mistranslation. just because jaewon is closed off and masks does not mean he's like that about everything all of the time. like he says to jihyun, its easier to talk to him because he doesn't know his baggage. and as somebody who is very similar to jaewon I find it so easy to say things to strangers that I struggle to articulate to my friends. I come out to people as soon as I meet them but coming out to my friends was hard. it just be like that sometimes.
the last thing is a spoiler of what's actually happening in that last scene in relation to the movie version of this show that came out, so if you don't want to see those, simply do not look under the cut:
jihyun is not dead, nor is he a figment of jaewon's imagination. it is not a dream sequence or a fakeout - jihyun does almost drown and it does utterly fuck jaewon up.
that is literally the only spoiler i know from the movie because i saw it by accident and then noped out of the comments section of MDL and banned myself from going in there because i hate being spoiled, but it's actively starting to worry me just how many people are convincing themselves that it's all a dream or a fakeout who are going to be really distressed next week when it turns out not to be.
i'm all for collective fandom delusion (i was in The 100 fandom for years) but this seems like the kind of thing that, as somebody who is also a mentally ill queer person who gets WAY too attached to media, could be really damaging to everybody the longer this week goes on without answers and the collective fandom delusion spirals out of control.
(and hey, maybe this spoiler is a lie, or maybe the show is being edited differently to the film, but i still think it's HIGHLY unlikely all of that was just to trick us for no reason. that doesn't really align with the story they're telling)
take a breath like jihyun can't and remember there are FOUR WHOLE EPISODES LEFT. maybe the show will end tragically or bittersweet but i don't believe they'll do that in a way that is designed to actively hurt us. this is a show made by queer people, for queer people, and they foreshadowed from the start that this was going to happen. it's not a dropped plot point or a fakeout or an accident of editing - everything is VERY intentional.

Autism doesn't equate to neurodivergence, it's a developmental disability that's present from birth. And physically disabled people who are born disabled as a result of brain damage in the womb are more likely to have comorbid autism. Just because allistic people on social media have defanged autism and call every specifically autistic trait "neurodivergence" doesn't mean it shouldn't be considered the separate thing that it is. "Neurodivergent traits" don't exist. Able-bodied men with autism being annoying doesn't make it okay for allistic physically disabled people to downplay autism. Most of us who have multiple disabilities end up under conservatorships bc of how debilitating our autism is, combined with presumed incompetence due to being visibly disabled as well.
babe what are you talking about for real.
#red said#i don't keep a mental tab of every post I've ever made and i don't think this is about anything I've said recently#bc like i don't THINK I've made any posts about autism or neurodivergence in a while#if i had to hazard a guess I'd say this was about a post I vaguely remember making like a year ago#in frustration about specifically able-bodied ''''high-functioning''''' autistic or adhd cis men dominating SPECIFIC conversations#as in. an observable pattern in lived experience.#i put high functioning in heavy quotes bc i think that's flawed and stigmatising language but clearly it's a relevant distinction to you#but. having said idk wtf you're on about. i still. disagree.#'neurodivergence' doesn't imply anything about the degree of impact a thing has on you#it implies a socially punished distance from an invented norm of neurotypicality#Mad people are neurodivergent. people with congnitive disabilities are neurodivergent. people with neurological issues like dyspraxia too.#autism is a subcategory of neurodivergent and most of the 'symptoms' overlap with other diagnoses which is why ppl call them nd#it isn't a defanging it's a recognition of shared struggle#and of the muddiness of diagnosis#also i feel like whatever you're referencing you think i was saying 'autism isn't a disability it's a neurodivergence'#which. no. i use a social model of disability. neurodivergence usually causes people to be disabled. it's usually a disability.#many people find their autism causes them to be disabled. some don't. those who do are disabled.#also the line about 'allistic physically disabled people' makes me think you are taking about me. I'm autistic. fyi.#whatever post you're responding to i think you're responding to a point different to the point i was making in it#i think. from your message. that you like a lot of autistic people have had your experiences regularly downplayed as convenient#and that you're reacting to that with a pretty understandable amount of anger#but like. i do not think i was saying what you think i was saying bc that doesn't. line up with anything i believe about autism???

sum of my john marston autism headcanons yippee
went non verbal a lot as a kid (ive said before i imagine him communicating through acts of aggression, be it verbal or physical. he's a traumatized kid, so he just wants people to leave him be but can't quite say as much, so he just hisses and growls or swats and hits).
still struggles with going semi/non verbal as an adult but tends to isolate or turn to drinking in these instances.
genuinely cannot tell when someone is making fun of him a lot of the time.
even if he could, he wouldn't really care anyway.
whittles sticks as stimming.
has pretty effective pattern recognition and can frequently tell when things are going to go wrong
however ive also diagnosed him with co-morbid adhd so he's frequently dealing with choice/analysis' paralysis and despite seeing things going wrong, he cannot figure out how to circumvent that issue with all the variables at play and just allows the situation to blow up in his face.
also clearly struggles w volume control at times
avoidance procrastination. when things are overwhelming he ignores it and tries to stave off doing something about it. like taking responsibility for jack. (who also has autism of course)
never understands when is an appropriate time to joke or utilize sarcasm. (this is hardly a hc)
has always kept his hair shaggy bc he does not like the sensory experience of haircuts.
also has a sensory aversion to water and this made teaching him to swim impossible.
it also makes bathing him impossible.
leans a lot on alcohol to manage symptoms in his early adulthood
resting angy face
not a headcanon, i just think the way he talks to NPCs especially in RDR2 is so autistic. just scream SIR!!!! at them.
i also think about his first interaction with evelyn miller when he's like "I'm a writer" and john couldn't give less of a fuck until he says his name and johns like. oh i know u !!!!
anyway feel free to add. he's everything 2 me

On one hand, I feel bad about El inheriting my autism and adhd, because I know it will make parts of her life more difficult in a world built for neurotypicals.
On the other hand, I feel like it deepens our bond in some ways, and at least she has an AUDHD parent (me) and an ADHD parent ( @thesurestthing ) who understand what's going on with her and what she needs, so hopefully she will be able to leverage her neurodivergent strengths to her benefit without wasting so much time wondering why she's different from everyone around her and compromising herself to try to fit in with those who will never accept her anyway.
Like, my life would have been so much easier if I'd known earlier that I was autistic and what that meant, and if I'd understood my pattern recognition skills for what they are.

okayyy sooooo sprolden is autistic
what traits do you think they have ? apart from waht weve been shown in the book
any headcanons ?
I mean there’s so many traits it’s hard to name them all 😭🤷 I’ll just name the ones I’ve noticed in the book
Tori has rlly bad sensory issues, she’s a picky eater and has very sensitive ears, also to lights. Sensitive ears bc at night she can hear thingy noises out of her window and the lights bc she’s one of the only heartstopper/solitaire characters to use sunglasses. Also she doesn’t like summer which I assume is bc of the sun and warm weather.
She has a safe food, like her famous diet lemonade.
Vocal stimming when she was playing solitaire,
Doesnt connect to others (expect Michael, Charlie, oli. Which all are neurodivergent)
Overly sarcastic but doesn’t pick up on others sarcasm
Hyperfixates
Special interests on Tumblr and used to on StarWars
Pattern recognition and SOOO much more BRAHH
Michael:
Michael gets overstimulated a lot and has meltdowns which where he gets very agressive and punches stuff
Had no friends… literally no one likes him or avoids him bc of his "weird personality" which lets be honest, is just autistic traits.
He speaks out on topics he rlly values, (justice driven)
Special interest is skating
He’s bad at school, he doesn’t understand questions and the meaning of them bc he overthinks the possibilities of the answers and can’t put it into words, also that’s why he rants and info dumps
He prob has adhd (I PROB HAVE ADHD😭)
AGAIN I HAVE SO MUCH MORREE but I would have to read the book and listen to the audio book and make notes so that’s for another time.
But anyways I think tori and Michael are both autistic but in opposite ways! :3

dude help i just relized that mee seeing patterns in almost everything isn't something that happen automatically in everyones' brains and it has something to do with neurodiversity and i never felt so diffrent in my life
Like all the diffrences in my life even before knowing i'm autistic were clear, and even understandable since i over analyze things my entire life, so i knew about almost every single things that's a diffrence
But the fact that i actually see world literally diffrent just schocked me, like how come others not see it when it's just infront of them ? I need an explaination because non of the sources i usually search from like scince.direct understand my question
Also what do we call this feeling ...? Do you also see pàtterns diffrently ?
Greetings again, I am pleased to see you're still around. And apologies for not answering, I started answering & I had to pause it & then it sort of got under the radar - I am truly sorry, @kidron
I actually have SO MANY inbox messages/asks & I truly want to answer every single one. Do not worry if you sent one & I haven't answered it yet.
What you are referencing to is called
Pattern recognition.
The autistic brain excels at recognizing patterns. In fact, brain regions associated with recognizing patterns (temporal and occipital areas) light up more in autistic people’s than in the general population’s.
People on the Autism Spectrum tend to be very good at finding meaningful patterns in both meaningful & "meaningless" data. They are able to take information, find the patterns within it & thereby explain why things happen.
Overanalysing the world is not uncommon for autistic people & it takes a lot of energy from us.
We truly see the world differently. I can not walk around and NOT see patters everywhere.
It's a skill on one hand because it surely makes me able to excel at analyzing & people do treasure the ability, but given the fact I can not consciously stop it, it is also a burden.
Some examples of my pattern recognition skills (?)
I can usually forsee the plot of a movie after a few minutes of watching it. This also applies to books as well
I can categorize human behavior to general concepts & analyze the meaning behind it (very tiring & it stems from trying to read "between lines" & I actively try to stop that because it is not worth my energy)
License plates. I love to see common patters in numbers & how they connect to the person who owns the car. I also like to decompress by just sitting on a roof & making lists of license plates to categorize them (YES, I am weird, get over it).
Numbers & the beauty of math. I remember the joy I felt when I first recognized some connections between the math operators I learned & the concepts in physics I studied. Real-life connections should be more common in schools because then it would make SENSE to the students.
I can recognize ADHD & Autism in others very quickly due to them being special interests. Mikey calls me an "autie spectrometer" (highly amusing!)
I have been told that my ability to reflect on my own behavior is exceptional

I worked on this for far too long, admittedly, but it was so satisfying. Thanks to ADHD and a keen sense of Pattern Recognition, I’d been picking up on some things in Gen’s ads for a while that were bugging me and I set out on a mission.
The point here is to take note of all the repeated words, phrases, and even set-ups for different products that she has tried to promote over the past couple years. No one can ever say that she doesn’t recycle! (See what I did there? 😏)
Even crudely pasted together like this, it’s clear that she just regurgitates the same several buzzwords to try to create hype over products she is probably seeing for the first time.
And yes, this is the scourge of influencer culture at large, but this is an Anti Genevieve blog…so I’m dragging her specifically. 😘

In my ceramics au, everyone is an artist (stede just bought an art gallery he knows nothing abt running and all his staff are artists and they have staff bonding at Queen Anne clay happy hour one night and this is how stede meets Ed and Izzy) I’m still working through my thoughts abt everyone’s artistic qualities etc but I wanna lay out my artist thought so far:
Jim: experimental contemporary jewelry (pushing the limits of what jewelry is/can be, experimenting with the thwarting facial recognition, and ideas of beauty)
Swede: tooth jewelry
Wee John: fiber artist and handpoke tattooer
Fang: whimsical playful functional pottery (doesn’t necessarily have to be function but often happens to be)
CJ: kitschy crude humor pottery
Stede: handbuilt/slab built ceramics - functional work that has a main focus on formal beauty. Pieces that serve a function but are intentionally made beautiful/ornate enough to stand their own as sculptures too
Ed & Izzy in the present run a pottery business that focuses on production pottery (large scale creation of identical pieces for being sold in stores etc). They make pipes that look like other things (food/objects), mugs/bowls/plates/pour overs that have some splashes of whimsy in a color choice or pattern or shape but are overall not terribly complicated. They are unique tho. they also have the Queen Anne clay storefront that has classes like happy hour clay classes, kids classes etc.
Neither of them focus too terribly much on their own personal art but sculptural non functional personal ceramic work blooms from each of them throughout the fic as stede encourages them to explore things beyond their business/actually feel their feelings.
In college they both were like way into performance art. Ed kinda for fun and bc he loved the physical exertion of it, but Izzy was 100% serious, putting his entire being into every performance for better or for worse. They egged each other on to bigger and bigger pieces and we’re very Marina and Ulay coded. Jack thought it was all stupid and just liked to join in bc he thought it was funny and hot to slap each other for long stretches of time but izzy was frustrated bc he didn’t get it.
Ed’s college art was more multi media (bc adhd yk) but was big on painting as a throughline. His work was big and messy and loud. He liked word working and sculpture and linocut printmaking.
There’s so much more but it would be a multiple page essay if I laid it all out rn.
Buttons: the QAC kiln tech. Loves to sculpt birds from clay.
Frenchie would of course be heavily focused on music but I haven’t settled all the details yet.
Roach obviously food based but again, not all ironed out.
Lucius: drawing, life drawing classes, focus on sensuality, queerness, the body, love
Pete: life model, wood working
Still thinking on the rest.

Just Add Magic trio headcanons I have after rewatching the show after 3 years:
— KELLY !
• of French descent (idkw)
• Autistic (hyperfixates on the cookbook, quickly solving mysteries via pattern recognition, picking up on magic rather quickly, and Darbie saying she notices Kelly always smoothing her hair most likely as a form of stimming can be read as autistic traits)
• Neutral Evil
• Favorite color is purple or lavender (it’s just a vibe i get)
• Speak Now & Midnights stan
• But a Lana Del Ray fan
• Cooking/Baking is a special interest (also cooking as a form of control and predictability is very ND coded)
• Morally Gray
• Also her dad is autistic
— HANNAH !
• Has Generalized Anxiety Disorder and is on meds for it
• Favorite color is light blue
• Also autistic (“Numbers calm me down”, needing routine and hates unpredictability can be read as autistic traits)
• of Jewish descent
• Lawful Good
• Will be a former gifted burnout kid when older
• Tried to mask her autistic traits at Fox Canyon
• Gets panic attacks
• Gives me softgirl lesbian energy, but would also take her as pan as well
• SWIFTIE
• Folklore, Evermore, & Lover stan
• Def owns a weighted blanket
• Also her dad and Hailey are also autistic
— DARBIE !
• Inattentive ADHD AF (literally every “Darbie being Darbie” is literally just her displaying an adhd trait; i.e. forgetting things/always losing things, poor fine motor skills/missing every shot into the trash can in the very first episode, generally clumsy, and little to no sense of fear are all adhd traits. i have inattentive adhd i can say this)
• Bi Bi Bi (also may’ve had a crush on Piper but didn’t realize it)
• Like really how many theatre kids do you that are straight???
• Ron Weasley variant
• Chaotic Good
• Has major Alexithymia
• Celebrates (and makes Kelly and Hannah celebrate) St. Patrick’s Day bc she’s hella Irish
• The same reason her favorite color is green

• BRIDGERTON STAN
• Red & 1989 stan
• Special interest are the Doom series by Trudith Winters, spy movies, and Earles of Wembley and will info dump to her friends about it constantly
• The reason her only fear is being left alone is due to the times magic has broken up her friendships with Hannah and Kelly and later her parents getting a divorce

YEAH!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!! TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SKILLS!!! :D!!!!!
HEELL YYEE!!! Let me just spill my guts out !!
Tumblr media
This may be a little long :]
(You may know this but is good to recap)
Ok, small story time! Basically I drew them becourse I read spilledkaleidoscopes works and in the second part Kim gets his own skills and there are only 8 and I was like "Fuck, If I were to make my own skill I am not forced to the albatrairie number 24 and also not forced to include all of physique and motorics gangs and i could just mix and match and nobody would care." so that's basically what I did
i took me 20 hours to figure their designs out (I am not kidding btw, i looked through the ibispaint recording) and 10 more to render them out to a point that i would say it's acceptable (i would have stayed longer if i wasn't physically and mentally tired of this little project and i also told myself that they will never be perfect and that OK)
Tumblr media
more drawings for your pleasure (some not posted yet)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok now let's actually talk about the 8 dummies: (i will compare them to Harry's skills and other stuff for better understanding)(also I will includes an edgy description) [anything in square brackets are just my notes over the skill]
DOUBT - LOGIC + anxiety + masking - Logic tainted by how many times you got burned. You now know what to hide; all your cracks and imperfections. Your mask won't peel from your face, you forgot to take it off at some point and now you don't ever remember what you look like. Good luck with that, people would hate you more without it and you know it; I bore that though your head everyday.
[The little Jean in all of us. A strung up anxious mess that can't understand that people actually like you and that perfection is impossible. A lil hater.]
MECHANICAL HEART - EMPATHY + video game/movie logic - Understansing through empathy and pattern recognition. Don't understand someone? That's OK, use your vast knowledge of media to put them into little boxes and label them. People are more complicated than that but I am just a tool. I tune in on everyone and everythings frequency and if you don't understand something you look through the file drawer of your mind.
[My internet riddled brain can only understand tropes. I have so much brainrot that it can not be contained, it spreds to everything]
SENSOR - ENDURANCE + PERCEPTION + INTERFACING + autism - Caretaker of the temple. For other people it's automatic. Sadly, yours isn't. You forget to eat if nobody reminds you. So that's why I'm here. Your nerves are also more sensitive than most. It doesn't help that the world has so many textures and hard edges. I relay all the info as soon as I get it, though it's late most of the time.
KNOW-HOW - ADHD info dump (basically ENCYCLOPEDIE) - Keeper of the librarys. You know, your mind is like a library, but without any of the labeling a normal library would use. More of a big collection of storys and fun-facts you know. When you don't ask them for a piece of information in particular, they chime in with something that is vaguely connected to the conversation.
WILLPOWER - VOLITION + a crumb of SHIVERS - Makeing peace with it all. I am silent most of the time but not, because I don't care. I talk only to remind you of the world's humanity. When you are at ypur lowest. You need to go on. You can take a break, maybe cry a little, but never actually give up. The world doesn't end with you, and it's worse without you in it.
[they don't talk a lot cuz I am a depressed lil bitch]
DAY DREAM - INLAND EMPIRE + VISUALIZATION + CONCEPTUALIZATION - Close your eyes and see other worlds. Colors, characters, ideas, scenarios; all swirling in that little head of yours. They just make the puppets move for your own amusement. They unfortunately play with your puppet too, making you watch scenarios wherein you die a lot, but what can you do? You can't stop it. It has it upsides through, mainly escapism.
CHASE - ELECTRO-CHEMISTRY + ADHD hyperactivity + autistic hyperfixation - Longing for paradise and ambrosia. Comfort over anything else. They love to indulge and party. Not actually party. You know, more like watching youtube alone or with friends while eating chips at 2 AM. That is your type of party. Your batteries run low most of time, so a good game and a snack also work.
[ELECTRO-CHEMISTRY but a bit chiller, no drug related stuff, if sugar doesn't count. They just love good brain juice]
FLARE - HALF LIGHT + PAIN THRESHOLD - The fire that burns within us all. A caged animal that hisses at anything that comes near. In general it sits in corner, waiting, only popping it's head out to shriek profanities at whatever rattled the cage. All bark, no bite. A problem that you have is that you forget how people wronged you, but I'm here, I remember. Only emotions, but that is enough. You shouldn't give out so many second chances.
[stressed out little creature]
They also hate each other so fucking much AAAAAA I have a headache
I also wrote a small story with all of them in another post... I want to write some more small storys of mine if i could think of anything funny that happend and that would work in the Disco Elysium dialog style
you can also make your own skills if you want, i may be annoying but I believe in you <3 don't know what else I could add

*cracks knuckles* it's my time to shine
My credentials: I was diagnosed with the inattentive manifestation of ADHD when I was 19. I'm now 21.
My limitations: I've only played twilight princess, botw, totk, and skyward sword. so these will be focused mostly on wild, twilight, and sky.
For all of them: studies have shown that those with ADHD have increased pattern recognition, which is vital for all of the Zelda games. Additionally, there's a theory that ADHD was an evolutionary advantage in cases where rapid decision making and intense physical activity were necessary for survival.
Now onto specifics.
Sky: most likely inattentive. He is known to doze off when sitting down for longer than like 2.2 seconds. This is pretty consistent with what's known as intrusive sleep. It's a fairly common experience for folks with ADHD folks. Essentially, the nervous system disengages as soon as the person loses interest in whatever they are doing and that leads to sudden drowsiness.
Wild: Combined type. I think the open world format of botw and totk really contribute to this lol. He can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He's impulsive, insanely energetic, and can enter a state of hyperfixation seemingly at will (flurry rush and bullet time). He wanders off literally all the time and will forget what he's doing unless he has a reminder (sheikah slate).
I may continue this with my thoughts on twilight but it's like almost 2 AM and I need to be up in four hours lol goodnight!! Feel free to ask me to elaborate on my thoughts :)
Guess I'll be ADHD anon now if that's okay 😅
Oh my goodness- I hope you got the sleep you needed. ^.^*
And you can be the ADHD anon, I suppose. It's not like anyone else has that name. XD
I'm glad that someone else has this because I don't necessarily know the difference between inattentive or just like...general ADD. I just never got around to do/look up the research.

i am so happy i became a massage therapist. I love it.
i don't think i'd have been able to recover from autistic burnout otherwise. I also didn't even know I was autistic until a year and a half into the field, massage as a career actually helped me figure it out cause it helped me calm down and be able to take care of my needs.
like this job was basically made for autistic people who are touch friendly:
have dim lights constantly
soothing music- I can also choose my own music in the room I work in
everyone is quiet and talking is soft (usually)
I can wear whatever I want to work, but the more comfy the better. Generally I wear tshirts and nice lounge pants. Some of my coworkers wear yoga pants, or bright hippie-like pants.
I have to talk to at most 2 clients in an hour, at best 1 every 2 hours
I work half as much as other people (I work 20 hours a week, up to 29 if I need extra money, but I have to do that sparsely or else my body hurts too much)
I make 60% of the massage cost + tip so I can afford to work that 20hrs a week and still pay bills and buy some things that I want. The cost is the amount of time plus 10. so $70 for an hour, I earn $42, people usually tip between $10-20 so I make $52-62 an hour.
15 minutes between each massage where I am able to be alone and just clean the room I was using. I am able to calm down any sensory issues in this time. (I am not paid for this time, as I earn commission from the massages so I get about 16 actual paid hours per week)
tactile work where my hands are constantly busy and my sensory sensitivity actually comes in handy
pattern recognition helps me figure out how to help specific pain patterns
able to stand or sit whenever I need to. I can even kneel while I work. some massage techniques you do just from sitting and kneeling on the floor, such as Thai massage
the people that do talk to me during the massage generally tend to be neurodivergent. I get a lot of infodumps about interesting things and it can be pretty fun
the people I work with tend to be neurodivergent as well, usually undiagnosed older neurodivergent people, but one of my coworkers is just a year older than me and has autism and adhd too. We just kinda flock to the career cause it's comfy.
if I feel uncomfortable with someone I can reject them as a client. it's about safety and comfort for the therapist and the client. so if someone says anything homophobic or transphobic I can walk out and reject them immediately or I can stay quiet, get money for the work I have done and then reject them for future appointments.
I can also reject people who don't respect my time, such as people who don't show up for appointments or people who constantly show up 10+ minutes late and expect to get their full time. This can make me have a meltdown, and so I cut them out of my schedule if they want to walk all over it.
There are clear boundaries and rules that are outlined for the field. we have to take ethics classes every 2 years while in the field so everyone is on the same page about these rules.
school was 7 months for full time and could be done in a year and a half for a part time student. It was short enough that even as a college dropout, it wasn't daunting. And grades kinda mattered, but not to a point where I stressed myself out about things like I did with college. and a lot of grades were just based on participation and how well we could follow a physical massage routine that we learned.
and one of the best things:
I can work barefoot and no one cares.

Happy WBW! In honor of the pain bestowed upon me by the Blood Goddess 🙃, what is your world like in relation to sicknesses, injuries, and other afflictions? Feel free to discuss the medical system or how jobs/institutions respond, or even how individual characters feel!
Thanks for the ask and I hope the Blood Goddess has mercy on you soon 💜
Answering for Bridge From Ashes and Name From Nowhere because this is such a huge part of the world in those books.
Their world is incredibly medically advanced (because of extensive research on incarcerated human subjects...shh). New limbs can be seamlessly grafted onto where the original ones were lost. Scars, wrinkles and other 'imperfections' can be smoothed away without a trace. The vast majority of people look unsettlingly untainted by life and to willingly have visible scars, or prosthetic limbs rather than grafts, is a HUGE statement that makes most people extremely uncomfortable.
The upside, since there's always something positive that stops people questioning too hard where the amazing tech comes from, is that pretty much any illness can be cured quickly and easily. Everyone has access to healthcare. Neurodivergence like autism and ADHD is not considered a disorder or deficiency but instead is recognised as a (conveniently useful) difference and accommodations naturally exist as part of a system of universal accessibility.
Examples (because I love that I get to talk about this!!)...
Rafe is very obviously ADHD but it's never named because it just wouldn't be in that world. He's great at pattern recognition and making logical leaps, he has sharp focus when he's into what he's doing, and his recklessness can be harnessed to be useful. He just needs a distraction-free environment to work in, which is automatically accepted as a thing some people need.
He's covered in scars, including very noticeable ones on his face, and people often either have a hard time looking at him or they stare at him like he's an unknown quantity because seeing someone just casually wandering around with big scars is really unusual. He wears them as a badge of honour and also to keep people at a distance because he's fully aware of the power they hold.
Thank you so much for giving me an opportunity to ramble!

finished Apothecary Diaries Vol #4
Holy smokes it's an absolute shame that the first two couers of the anime are likely only going to make it through the first two novels. And even the manga itself is only scratching at the start of volume 4.
It is, plain and simple, a delightfully well written narrative.
I say this as an avid reader, a sometimes writer, and a general appreciator of a well crafted story.
(Minimal spoilers through volume 4 follow)
Clues are laid down. Maomao acknowledges them by dint of being so observant, then immediately forces herself to forget them or not think too hard about them (her biggest character flaw, but obviously one that came about as sort of an instinctual survival coping mechanism in Verdigris House and later on the rear palace. No client would like a nosy little serving girl learning too much, after all.) She can recall them when she's forced to, but it's an interesting masking trait in and of itself. Feign ignorance or die.
The writer's choice of omniscient third person lets us flit from mind to mind, character to character, and know things that would otherwise have to remain a mystery. And confirm that characters live or die, even if Maomao has to stay ignorant for now. I appreciate that sense of closure.
So far, Chekov's feifa hasn't remained unfired. It's great! Vignettes that seem like cute little slice of life moments have major plot implications two volumes later. (The ghost stories chapter from Volume 2 is a fantastic example of that. Shisui's surprisingly good acting skills, plus the mystery of the organizer being dead. At first I thought it was Hyongang since she said she wanted someone to continue the tradition, but then later I was pretty sure it was the elder woman from the clinic... who wouldn't have been above having another dozen women in the gardens dead..)
I love that every character in the La family so far has their own variation of neurodivergence. Lakan with his face blindness and military savant, Lahan with his ASD number and pattern recognition, Luomen with his brilliant mind but occasional ADHD-like problems, and of course Maomao the autism queen herself. Pretty sure she got that straight from her mom, for that matter.
Anyway, I'm already chewing on volume five. I haven't binged this much on a book series in years. I'm hyperfixated to the point of tuning out reality. Glad it hit during Christmas break because I quite literally might get through all 12 volumes before New Year's Day.
I'm giving to understand that the original web novel is a hair on the darker side, and a lot of the things I'm gushing about are no doubt results of a solid editing process after the fact for the light novels.... but isn't that a good thing? There's no shame in a good clean up editor.

for mod ig but uh. Scp idea rant thing? Jesus christ my adhd ass got carried away with this
I'm kinda tempted to make an scp that's just a small anomalous raptor like thing that runs around forcing doors open. It itself isn't very scary or particularly harmful, but it likes fear. He primarily opens the doors of scarier scp by pressing it's hand onto the lock, typically going for things like 035, 049, 173, 1048, 096, ect, but often times opening every door it comes across. It's very intelligent and good at pattern recognition, and it could probably help Mal0 get into people's phones n shit by carrying a hard drive around in it's lil mouth. I think it's touch would make the door accept that it has been opened, and the door wouldn't close under any circumstances or with significant difficulty at best cough cough opening scene in containment breach cough cough and must be replaced. This applies for anything with a lock or the ability to open. if you have a door that doesn't have a lock but still shuts and it has come in contact with this scp, then that fucker will never shut properly again. If you have a computer and it touches it? boom, passcode can no longer be set and no matter what you do there's no way to fix it. Very difficult to move because any attempts at using things to transport it will fail, so the only thing you can do is sedate it heavily and drag it along with your hands. There is no surefire way to contain it, as it seems to somehow always find a way out, defying physics in some cases. It might vary how long it takes though, and the standard measure is to drop it in a pit of tar and pray.
Idk you mentioned having a scp hyperfix (same obvs god help me) so I wanted to throw this idea at you because all of my friends think I'm weird lmao. I need to flesh this out more obviously but uh.
best way to neutralize it is to take it to horror movie night with the boys. It got banned because it laughs at you the entire time though/hj
It's nickname is 'clever girl'
《This is an awesome idea! It's not to crazily overpowered like some scps are and that's really cool! I feel kinda weird sometimes tbh whenever someone says they have their own scp and it's just the bland vanilla "raaagh big scary world ending keter class" entity. I'm pretty sure there's an scp wiki when you can add your own scps considering the SCP foundation as a whole is open to the public. Go forth with your idea and have fun!》

saw ask. so let's say hypothetically (not really) all the apprentices are autistic (they are) headcanon them
LET’S GOOOOOOO!!!! i do hc all the apprentices as autistic in their own ways (except adam, who in my mind/writing has standalone adhd) and i definitely write them that way in my fic, lawrence especially.
lawrence:
it runs in the family, but his parents were both very ignorant/in denial about it so lawrence thinks that there’s nothing unusual about any of his mannerisms. he has a sneaking awareness that He’s Not Like Everyone Else but i think he usually chalks that up to the decades he’s spent being closeted.
he loves and finds comfort in the ritual and routine of putting on formalwear, and i think he feels more comfortable in suits/formalwear than he does in casual clothes.
he has a hot and cold relationship with eye contact— he knows it’s important and that people expect it of him, but in prolonged conversations, or when he’s feeling threatened or vulnerable, lawrence can’t maintain eye contact the entire conversation and has to look away.
his, ah… halting speech cadence comes from his autism.
the medical world has been his special interest practically since birth. as smart and privileged and as “cultured” as his family is, lawrence actually doesn’t know a ton about other subjects (particularly related to literature/the arts) because he’s been spending all his time reading about medical stuff since he was a kid.
somewhat related to above, i think he suffers a lot from burnout because he doesn’t have any other hobbies or big interests aside from medicine and also because he’s constantly pushing himself to be an overachiever and ignoring his needs and shortcomings 😔
left to his own devices, lawrence’s eating schedule/sense of mealtimes is ABYSMAL. it got worse once he was actively practicing as a doctor, since his schedules could be so long and unpredictable. he really needs another person around to remind him when it’s time to take a break from whatever he’s doing and have something to eat.
his pattern recognition and observational skills are UNMATCHED, but he tends to only apply them to situations where he judges that there’s a problem to be solved. he probably couldn’t tell you the color of a house that he drives by every day, for example.
amanda:
she has naturally high empathy and a very strong internal sense of justice, right, and wrong. part of the reason she suffers and agonizes so much over her work as an apprentice is because the lessons that john’s drilled into her head are in direct conflict with amanda’s own values. (this is also complicated by the decades of mistreatment and abuse she’s faced at the hands of the justice system, which has further skewed her natural moral compass.)
she has a VERY hard time processing and moving through her emotions— any sort of high emotional state can put her into shutdown and/or meltdown territory very quickly.
amanda is very sensory-seeking and uses sensory stimulation to help with her emotional regulation. if there are no safe avenues for her to do this, she will turn to harmful sources of sensory stimulation.
hoffman:
hoffman has EASILY the highest sensory intolerance to loud noises of all the apprentices. part of the reason he constantly has such a bitch face and bad attitude is bc he’s been rawdogging the noise and bustle of working as a cop for 20+ years and trying to hide how much he hates the sirens and gunshots and such.
he doesn’t really like to talk, and he also struggled a lot with reading when he was younger (partially due to inherent factors and partially bc he didn’t grow up in an optimal learning environment).
he can understand some jokes/sarcasm/metaphors, but oftentimes it goes over his head and needs to be explained to him. he speaks very bluntly and directly bc MAKING those sort of speech abstractions is a little beyond him.
king of flat affect. his facial expressions and tone of voice are NOT indicative of his internal emotional state‼️
i think that, like lawrence, hoffman is aware that something about him sets him apart from his peers and makes them a little uncomfortable, but in his case he sees that as kind of a good thing since it keeps people from getting too close to him and possibly getting suspicious. what DOES kind of hurt hoffman’s feelings (though he’d never admit it to anyone) is that his fellow apprentices don’t really seem to like him much, either.
in terms of special interests, i think he’s always been fascinated by like construction equipment and big vehicles and stuff like that. if he were given a good pair of earplugs or noise-canceling headphones, he could literally sit and watch a construction site for hours on end.
