Okay, can we just stop with the idea that you have to exercise to lose weight because you’ll burn calories? So many people think they need to go to the gym in order to lose weight, and it’s nonsense. For example, my treadmill tells you how many calories you’ve burned in a session. It’s an estimate obviously, but presumably based on observed trends, so. If I do 20 minutes of jogging, just over a mile (yes I’m slow don’t judge)... 61 calories. Sixty-one. That’s nothing. It’s a quarter of a Mars bar. Half a glass of milk. Less than a glass of orange juice.

If I eat an extra 60 calories every day, it would take me 58 days to gain one pound of weight. Or the opposite, if I burn an extra 60 calories every day, it’d take 58 days to lose one pound.

Like, I think people don’t realise just how efficient our bodies are at doing stuff. Especially cardio stuff. Most of the calories we eat go towards maintenance, normal organ functions, that kind of thing. Exercise adds a tiny amount; I can run for 20 minutes even when I’m tired or low on energy because it simply doesn’t require that much energy. Yes, it boosts metabolism and build muscle, so it helps, and it’s good for you, but not because it burns calories. The amount of exercise you’d have to do to make an actual difference is just not doable for most people.

When it comes to losing weight, it’s so much more efficient and less effort to just consume fewer calories to begin with than to try and “burn them off” later.

VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.
