Thinking about how death itself isn't the biggest horror so much as loss of identity. Death is cheap and easy, with people coming back all over the place and even those who do fully die are largely able to pass on with closure in a way that doesn't feel like the end.
But with Palamedes and Camilla, they're gone and Paul is all that's left. For Nona, she doesn't want to remember because remembering will hurt, but also because she's built herself up and remembering will entirely wipe out Nona. In both cases, no one is actually dying (any more than they already have), but the person who results is entirely changed and the originals lost and there's a sadness to that.

I think something to keep in mind regarding Kiriona and John's relationship, especially regarding the content of Kiriona and Ianthe's argument at the tomb, is what happens when they first meet. Yes, Gideon has a parent now! He's God! He gave her a new name connecting her to their culture and a commission in the cohort and made her his heir! Maybe he really is trying (when he's not drunkenly fucking his way through the cohort).
But the first time she meets him (during the Jerry Springer portion of the book), she sees the fight with Mercymorn and Augustine where he admits to lying about the cavaliers having to die. (As a cavalier who died, I think it would be totally reasonable for her to take this one personally.)
More importantly, she's angry with him for hurting Harrow. She straight up tells him, "Go to hell, Pops."
She watches Ianthe save him and says, "She got one choice, and not only did she blow it, but she blew it in such a huge fucking spectacular way that you would’ve been impressed had you not hated her for it."
Next sentence she calls John "the guy who had lied to everyone about everything."
Not a great first impression.
So back to Kiriona. She seems loyal enough. She plays the part. But she goes awol to get to New Rho first chance she gets (I don't believe for a second that John actually sent her there, especially considering there was no way to know they'd end up on the ninth. It has to be about Harrow, which Ianthe even asks.). She seems to me to be angry and defensive when she talks about what John has done to her body, her eyes "hard and dead and bright, like something that had been dug up" when previously they had been compared to Nona's eyes.
I feel like her loyalty to John isn't as secure as most people seem to think it is. If Harrow was disappointed by him as God while he still had his shit together, how disappointed must Gideon be to finally have a parent and it's John in his breakdown stage? Even Ianthe is disappointed by him.
I'm reminded of this exchange with Harrow in GtN:
“I need you to trust me.”
“I need you to be trustworthy.”
Given everything she's seen him do, I cannot imagine her finding John trustworthy. I can't imagine that a few months of playing happy families has changed that.

TLT theory: Aim, Jod, and the second part of the message
My brain is fevered. I feel like I've constructed an elaborate Pepe Silvia corkboard in my mind, and it feels like it makes sense of everything, but I honestly have no clue if that certainty will last very long.
I think I know what the Messenger is carrying. I think I know why John has waited ten thousand years.
Spooky preview quote from HtN chapter 2:
I mastered Death, Harrowhark; I wish I’d done the smarter thing and mastered Time.
Spoilers for Gideon, Harrow, and Nona the Ninth.
BoE's chronology has always been kind of weird to me: Five thousand years after the Resurrection happens, they pop up with intense and detailed knowledge of the 21st century! Jod destroys languages and cultures and societies, but BoE keeps popping up! How.
Originally I thought the continuous thread over the years was a Lyctor who helped them (and the necromantic implant does seem to point that way) but I also think part of it is that the ships that escaped just before Earth's devastation have been showing up one by one, over a huge span of time. That's why Wake says "My long-dead natal sun" and can quote Eminem at length; she spent ten thousand years suspended in time, before re-entering it.
NtN, John 19:18:
They said they’d managed to find some poor dipshit geek who’d fixed the FTL problem of getting locked in the chrono well, you know, moving so fast you were stuck doing quantum wheelies. They’d come up with something where you could oscillate out so long as the ship was attuned to a prearranged spectrum outside. I still don’t understand the maths. It’s going to take me ten thousand years to understand it. I couldn’t follow, but A— could. He said immediately, What is the point if you still have no fucking clue where your ship is going to end up when you shake out of FTL. They said, Aha, but we can track it once it’s out. A— said, It could be halfway across the universe or phasing through a planet. They kept arguing that probably wouldn’t happen [...] They said it was expensive, so twelve ships would go first, with one guiding them out with the beacon frequencies like a tugboat leading a cruise liner, triangulate for Tau Ceti, dump the population, and come back.
I think that AIM's message is the beacon that will call the last of the FTL fleet out of the chrono well. They are "we", they are the first of two parts, because their identity is the person they were before coming the Messenger, and the ships that still haven't oscillated back into three-dimensional space yet, because they are under AIM's personal guardianship/intimately tied to possession of her body.
NtN, John 5:4
I think the only reason I haven’t done it already is that I can’t bear the idea that I wouldn’t be able to touch them—that they’d still be out there …
I think Jod has been at this for so long because he is waiting for an event that could literally take an infinite amount of time to occur. He hasn't killed the entire colonized population yet because he wants something out of them, and it doesn't seem to be labour or devotion or even thanergy.
I think he's looking for the fleet's beacon, in a way that's like lighting a grassfire to flush animals out of hiding and deprive them of shelter. I think he's constantly killing planets and relocating and resettling populations before funnelling them together again, like a distillery trying to heat and separate different liquids as they move from flask to flask, because he wants to finally decant the key to the last ships that escaped him.

Holly and Poppy O'Hair Headcanons
Holly’s full name is Holly Ivy O’Hair. Poppy’s full name is Poppy Hazel O’Hair.
Poppy uses she/they pronouns.
The twins were tower-schooled before attending Ever After High.
Holly is cursed to have all doors that close behind her magically lock her in. She has to keep her dorm room door wedged open. Poppy isn’t completely comfortable with this and prefers the door to be closed, but she lets Holly keep it open a crack.
Poppy was definitely one of those girls who cut up their dolls’ hair.
Holly has ADHD, which makes damsel-in-distress class really difficult for her even though it’s her entire story. She also has a one-track mind. Once she starts on a subject, she will not stop talking. She uses reading and writing as an outlet for all the things buzzing through her head.
Poppy is the shier of the two. She’s more of a listener than a speaker, which comes in handy when Holly goes on a passionate rant. The only time she has no difficulty socializing is when someone is in the barber’s chair.
Holly’s a researcher of old folktales and ancient civilizations. The Wicked Step-Librarians have had to lock her out of the library for sneaking in after curfew and not being able to get out.
While they are close, Poppy wants to carve her own identity separate from Holly. She doesn’t only want to be known as Rapunzel’s sister. She wants to make a name for herself and have an impact on other people as her own person.
Holly is a morning person. Poppy is not.
Holly is sometimes insecure over having so much hair. She can’t avoid stepping on it, getting it snagged on something, and sometimes dragging on the floor. She envies Poppy for being free to cut her hair.
Multiples run in their family. Their mother is also a twin. She has an older twin brother named Tarragon, but she got the Rapunzel destiny because she was female.
Holly has had a crush on all three Charming siblings at one point or another.
Poppy was closer with Nanny Nona than Holly. Holly was wild and fidgety, frustrating Nona to no end. Poppy was the calmer of the two and thus got along better with Nona. Holly and Nona still get frustrated with each other from time to time.
Poppy loves spicy foods. She’s almost obsessed with them.
Their music choices differ drastically. Holly likes country pop music. Poppy is more into punk rock. However, they both share the same favorite artist: Dolly Charmton. Poppy plays the song “Midnight to Noon” to get her pumped up in the morning.
Poppy’s a great climber. She sometimes goes beanstalk climbing with Jillian.
Holly is slightly taller than Poppy.
Rapunzel and her husband work as the fairytale equivalents of district attorneys. As such, Holly and Poppy don’t get to see their parents very often - especially their mom - and it’s why they were left in the care of Nanny Nona.
Holly does tutoring in Creative Writing.
Despite working in a literal barbershop, Poppy does not like barbershop music.
Holly does not do things halfway and always takes the long road. She struggles in areas that don’t interest her, but she’s reluctant to take shortcuts. Her mother drilled into her head that “you can’t climb a tower if your hair is too short.” But Poppy tries encouraging her to “work smarter, not harder”.
Poppy has a thing for “baddies”. She used to have a crush on Sparrow, but got over him quickly when she found out he preferred Holly over her. She also has feelings for Duchess despite knowing she was voted “Most Likely to Steal Your Destiny.” Deep down, she knows it’s a problem.
Holly theorized Daring wasn’t Apple’s Prince Charming but kept it to herself. The only person she told was Poppy. She was pretty happy when she found out she was right.
Both sisters are devoted dragon moms.
They’re both very nervous for when their destiny comes to pass. Holly is a bit wary of living a lie; that she’s technically stealing her sister’s destiny. She’s also having some pre-guilt about blinding her future prince. Poppy is doing everything in her power to keep anyone from finding out the truth, because she wants to keep the life she’s been building for herself.

Omg can we please have more huskerdust babies?? I’m thinking all the things! Possibly more things during the pregnancy? I love the idea that when the hotel is attacked by the monster of the week, Angel gets pissed that they basically have Nifty babysit him ha. Or angsty stuff like, maybe Heaven has taken note that there’s been innocent souls born and they want to take them?? Omg so many thiiiiiings I love this lil world you created <3
Oh my god I absolutely Adore this ask, these are all the things I love talking about the most! <3 I'm so glad you like the AU!
God I love the idea that Angel Dust is very unimpressed at being benched from fights, bitching about it to the point where Charlie has to give him a list of pregnancy dos and don'ts with 'gunfights' on the don't list along with drugs, alcohol and tuna. Nifty gets assigned as his bodyguard whenever they are under attack but her job is far more often to keep him in his room. More than once, Husk has come back to find that Nifty had to pin Angel's jacket to the floor with her knife
Angel is Suffering with two very hyperactive, multi limbed, winged kittens inside him, especially when he's trying to sleep. And he discovers that the only thing that really gets them to settle is the sound of their daddy's rattling, rumbling, car-with-a-busted-exhaust purr. Which leads to many nights where they're curled up in bed and Angel Dust will sleepily give Husk a shove and mumble 'your kids are awake'. Husk knows it's his cue to roll over, shuffle down until his forehead is pressed to Angel's belly and purr loudly until the little ones settle back into sleep. Usually he'll stay there, Angel's fingers stroking through his fur, telling their babies to be nice to their pops, he's doing such a good job taking care of you and keeping you safe. Angel gets to drift back asleep listening to his voice and his purr and feeling so warm and safe
Cravings hit Angel at the weirdest times, often Husk will wake up at 2am with his side of the bed empty but he knows all he has to do is stumble down to the kitchen and his spider will be there, singing to himself and making some pasta dish he remembers his Nona making when he was alive. Husk just presses a sleepy kiss between his shoulders and gets himself on busboy duty. If he's lucky he'll get some leftovers.
Angel Dust does struggle a lot with how Different he looks when he's pregnant, just because he takes so much pride in looking a certain way and he's spent his whole afterlife being told that looking hot and having people want to fuck him is all he's good for. So when he starts showing, there's a few days where he just retreats to his room, under the blankets and doesn't really want to see anyone. Husk understands and doesn't make him feel stupid for feeling that way but he will wait until Angel wants to let him in then get under the covers with him. He promises that he's as beautiful to Husk as he's ever been, he can't believe he gets to be with someone who looks the way he does and, honestly, he's struggling to keep his hands off him most of the time. It does make Angel feel better and he gets to wear his comfier clothes now and gets used to looking at himself in a different way.
And then his hormones hit. Literally no one in the hotel sees them for about a week, Charlie goes up to see if they're okay, hears the noises coming from their room and bolts back downstairs with a bright red face like '....yeah, they sound like they're doing good'. When Husk eventually does emerge, to get some water, he's limping and holding his back, groaning that he's too old for this...
When they're born, as soon as they're able to wobble about on their many limbs, the spider kitties get Terrible zoomies. Half the time there's just these black and pink blurs zipping around the hotel, tumbling into each other and nearly knocking things over. It's good reflex training for everyone in the hotel making sure nothing gets smashed
and it is SO interesting that you mention this whole business with heaven as that is absolutely a part of this AU I came up with!!!! It's long enough to pretty much deserve it's own post but I am so delighted that your brain also went there because mine did too!!

I’m not at all a religious person, so there’s a lot to Harrow and John’s relationship that goes way over my head.
But when I’m thinking about what happens at the end of Nona the Ninth, I keep finding myself drawn to this one little interaction the two have right before Harrow starts plotting soup murders:
You stared, feeling mildly drunk and unutterably pitiful, at your repeatedly uneaten biscuit. Teacher said quietly, “You must think us all a depraved set of immortal criminals.” You said nothing. He pressed, “Harrow, do something normal. Learn how to make a meal. Read a book. Go ahead and prepare - our lives revolve around us all preparing... but take the time to rest. Have you slept lately?” It was the first time you realized God could not understand you.
Harrow the Ninth, p228
Because it's not just that John couldn't understand Harrow. At the end of the day, Harrow isn't honestly that mysterious and inscrutable, her fears and desires are very painfully human underneath the mask of her robes and face paint. And sure, while there are some key parts of Harrow's psyche that she normally keeps deathly secret, she ultimately tells John about those aspects of herself too.
And yet, even Palamedes understood Harrow better than John, and that was with Harrow giving him the cold shoulder throughout most of their interactions!
So I think, if John had made a genuine effort, he could have understood Harrow. Or at the very least, he could come to sympathize with who she was and where she came from, even if he might not be able to empathize with her extremely strange upbringing and value system.
But the thing about John is, he never cared enough to try to understand Harrow.
One of the repeated details that kills me in HtN is that no one ever asks Harrow about the significance of her face paint. Because Harrow often is expressing herself, very openly, and no one makes the slightest effort to learn the language she's speaking!
And Harrow not being given face paint in the hospital also has a very similar context to that Seventh adept who bleeds out only for John to be mildly annoyed at the whole ordeal. The guy loves making myriad-old pop culture references and yet shows less than zero interest in or respect for the present day culture of his followers. He’s so caught up in telling his own story that he never stops to consider that anyone else might have their own story too.
Which makes the flipside of this equation all the more fascinating. Because throughout HtN and NtN, the undercurrent to Harrow and John's interactions is that Harrow does not understand John either.
And yet, as we see in NtN, Harrow did try, very patiently, to understand John. She listened attentively, she asked important questions, she persisted even when he spoke in terms she had no context for. And so, in the end, Harrow could understand John, or rather, she could understand enough to decide she does not consider John Gaius worthy of being her God.
If John had made even the slightest effort to understand Harrow - or even simply respect her - he might have been able to win her back to his side. Instead, he answers her crisis of faith with a crass and shallow joke. Making it crystal clear that despite two books in Harrow’s company, he has truly learned nothing about her.
And because he did not, she leaves him.

Hi there [walks up to you with a clipboard and pen] I’d like to ask you a few questions about your lobotomy family au.
Do you think anything Raz owned had his birthdate on it? Like the blanket with his name on it was like made specially for him and had his birth information on it? Or did Cal have no idea how old this child was or when his birthday was when he found him? Cause I was thinkin what if the inmates all got together and came up with a birthdate for him and decided one arbitrarily so they could celebrate every year. That would be cute I think.
Do u think Raz ever stumbled into some random places at camp. Like what if he accidentally fell into a stump and wound up in Ford’s lab? Ford goes “who is this sassy lost child” and helps him out and then immediately forgets it actually happened the next day and writes the experience off as a weird dream. Or maybe Raz finds him again later in like the lodge and ford gives him a free psi pop or smth lol. Ford being the only adult who knows Raz exists and not really taking note of it because of the state of his mind, or telling like Sasha and Sasha not taking it seriously like “I bet he’s just been listening to too many of the campers’ stories”. Good concept I think
Raz knowing the camp’s entire layout like the back of his hand before he actually gets to attend camp as a camper. Coach is like “here let me show you back to the kids’ cabins” and Raz is like “no thanks I already know where they are” [backflips into the trees]
Hm do you think Raz got to practice many psychic skills before camp? Or did he not really get to understand it because of Cal’s strained relationship with psychic powers. Idk if you answered this elsewhere but what’s going on there. Raz experiments and makes a levitation bubble and cal immediately flips out and tells him to never do that again? Or is he a supportive dad and helps Raz figure it out. Hm. Cal and Augustus both have psychic trauma so maybe that part wouldn’t be changed from the original. What do you think lol
I’d imagine Raz did get lots of practice with his psi-crobatics tho. Psychic stuff and acrobatics both coming naturally to him plus all his practice climbing around in the trees probably meant he was able to develop that skill pretty well, even if he doesn’t really understand how it works lol. This au needs to keep the adults being shocked with how well he can maneuver some of those obstacles like in basic braining because of his acrobatic upbringing
Anyways sorry I didn’t ask you many questions I mostly just rambled at you LMAO enjoy I guess lol
NO DONT BE SORRY I LOVE RAMBLE ASKS LIKE THIS
Okay, to answer your first question, the blanket Raz got was kind of a passed down thing. It actually has Dion and Frazies birthdays on it, but it didn't have his because Nona couldn't sew it on in time before the accident :( its kind of funny though, because the inmates argued about which one could be his birthday, despite the fact that, that would mean this baby was actually 8 or 6 lol
And OMG FORD KNOWING THAT RAZ EXISTS BUT SINCE HES KIND OF CRAZY NO ONE BELIEVES HIM IS SO FUNNY TO ME- And yes, Raz has stumbled into Fords secret lab multiple times
“here let me show you back to the kids’ cabins” and Raz is like “no thanks I already know where they are” [backflips into the trees] <- THIS MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD ABSSISHKAN
Anywas, yes! Raz has already gotten himself familiar with the camp. He will admit it's a lot more different in the day time though.
For Psychic powers, he had a bit of an understanding of it. He knew how to levitate a bit but not for very long. He was pretty good at telekinesis and pyro. Cal doesn't really care to much about it. He's actually pretty proud! But he's still VERY protective because he doesn't want him to be discovered by the wrong people and have the same thing that happened to him, happen to his son. He is very similar to Augustus in that sense, he wants to be supportive, but he also wants to keep his kid safe, y'know?
And acrobatics do come surprisingly naturally to Raz. As a kid, he found he was surprisingly agile, and that whole thing Donna said about "highly stretchable ligaments" was no joke! He also has double jointed everything, no joke. It's kind of funny how naturally he can flip and twist his body. He's obviously not as good as he would have been if he was still raised by the Aquatos, but he's still pretty good.
I am just happy to spread the brainrot that this au has inflicted upon me :)

In terms of the funko pop wargame, what did the process of creating the statblocks look like? Because unless I seriously buggered up my math even if you are doing 2500 words a day every day it would take you over a year to do every single one. So how did you do it? Please explain if you can. As a writer, this is the type of writing efficiently I desperately crave.
sorry to burst your bubble but this is 100% a case of "work smarter not harder". i will give some genuine writing advice at the end though!
so both Mortal Popbat and IP!b2:fK.O.(DE) were made using really sloppy python code. i compiled the funko pop lists by hand (with some help this time around, thank you Nona), wrote some big lists of "ifs" and "thens" to get combined together to form abilities, played around with the various probabilities until it was outputting something i was happy with, and then wrote up the mechanics, slapped in the statblocks, and called it a day. it took me four days to put it all together, which means id've had to beat 2.4 statblocks a minute to write them all out, or 2500 words every 16 minutes.
this wasn't just for efficiency, mind. part of the fun of this project for me is having a general shape in my head of the possibility space, but being continually surprised by the actual outcomes. if id handwritten them all, i couldnt have been surprised and delighted by things like this! it also means that ive hidden some easter eggs in the game even from myself, so i can be surprised when some of the stranger possibilities crop up.
okay but writing advice time. ive never found it helpful to set big, strict daily goals for myself. what always winds up happening is i fall out of the rhythm once or twice and then its like pulling teeth trying to get back into it. i also try to avoid the usual adhd deadline-chasing that does result in stuff getting done, but also burns me out incredibly fast. what that means in practice is i sometimes have periods of really intense creative energy (like this week) that ill ride but not set heavy expectations upon, and then when it's calmed down i try to keep a pace of doing a little bit whenever ive got time, even if that's just writing some notes in my phone or correcting some mistakes ive noticed. sometimes doing a little thing like that'll lead to me doing more, maybe spending a few hours putting stuff down on paper, but i also don't admonish myself if it doesnt. as a result im not the fastest in the world at getting stuff done, but but i am continually working on big, ambitious projects that ten years ago id've started, gotten super burnt out on, and abandoned. plus, it means sometimes i get a Funny Writing Impulse and knock out a game like IMMORTAL POP!bat, Maybe One Day, It'll Be Enough, or Stationkeeping in a day or three.
i understand that's almost certainly not what you're looking for lmao, but i hope it helps regardless! follow your own rhythm, trust the process, and make stuff you love!

here's my favorite HCs for Jason Todd
6'2" = 1.8796 m (apparently). in other words, he IS just the teeniest bit TALLER than Bruce Wayne, his dad. & it's even better when they're both in costume, because his boots add a teeny bit MORE (ofc it's offset by Bruce's Batman boots, but stfu). he's a big boy who Alfred insists is "still growing" & therefore he deserves lots of food. specifically, bread, which he's always had a fondness for. that, hot dogs & spicy noodles (pad thai, Nona's* spaghetti, Alfred's secret recipe chicken noodle soup)!!
he's half Latino & half Italian. yes, I know that "Todd" & "Haywood" are names of English origin. I am aware. & I don't care. he speaks Spanish as a second language & Italian as a speaking-only third (since some of the families in the neighborhood know some Italian). yeah, he was born with auburn (reddish-brown) hair, but he dyes it black. no one knows why & no one asks. and ofc there's the white streak, which almost magically pops back up every time he tries to dye it.
his eyes were more blue, maybe a glassy hazel when he was Robin. after the Pit, dark green leaked into his irises, even more so when he gets incredibly angry/upset.
his butt is toned, duh, but his thighs and pecs are the stuff of legend. he just naturally has a broader chest and thicc thighs (that can crush watermelons--and they will, if you're close with him and you ask nicely, promising a gift of cookies or cuddles in return). he's actually kind of self-conscious about his thighs, because they're so big.
he's always had a soft spot for innocent creatures, to the point where he's unfazed that they're attracted to his presence. strays try to follow him home when he patrols, to the point where he keeps a bag of cat food in each of his hideouts. one, out of the many reasons why he has a motorcycle is to outrun the strays. when he visits Selina, he plans to stay for at least two hours because they're all gonna lie on him, and who is he to move?? also, babies calm down as soon as he makes noise (speaking normally, singing a lullaby, goo-go-gah lingo, etc.).
he's pansexual, but demisexual and demiromantic. I mean, the guy had a rough childhood home, he was ratted out by his biological mom, and he still has issues with most of his family. ironically, he tends to put his heart into everything he sees as worth doing, even when that comes to people he doesn't know. that's why he takes being a vigilante so seriously. he wants other Gothamites to have a better city than he had growing up, even if it'll never be free of crime.
you bet your ass he likes the classics, namely The Prince, Hamlet, some Jane Austen, and The Catcher in the Rye. do not ask him if he has read Moby Dick or Ulysses. he has (at least, partially) and he hates them both.
he respects women, and with the exception of Alfred, he tends to prefer them to men when it comes to working and doing platonic activities. is being a BIG Wonder Woman fan related to this? no. but he is one.
he saw Barbie. he read about Oppenheimer before the movie came out, and he wasn't amused.
Jason can't do horror movies, especially ones like Saw, or anything that has to do with psychological scares or torturing characters. considering how he died, plus the times he's been hit with fear gas...yeah, he'd much rather watch some action-suspense, a good book adaptation (he gets so fucking unhinged when they don't follow the books), or a witty historical romance.
he actually respects all of his siblings for the most part, and he'll help them with whatever if it's serious. he just feels uncomfortable regularly associating with them because they still have some kind of allegiance to Bruce, who he refuses to treat as a superior/leader of his. he and Bruce do talk one-on-one when Alfred guilts him into coming home for a meal, or when the world's almost ended (for the 59,211,948th time) and they want to say "I'm glad you're not dead" without really saying it. he loves Bruce but he doesn't fully trust him with his heart, if that makes sense.
he mentally separates the Gotham Rogues into those he'll let off with a warning, and those who are scum. the first kind only gets confronted and fought if they're actually hurting people (physically or socioemotionally).
yes, he still uses guns and knives.

Hi! I'd love to hear your raz headcanons!
Oh man I have so many of these. I could do one JUST about his archetypes, but I'll keep this one more broad.
Headcanon A: Realistic
As one of the youngest members of the Psychonauts (He can't claim the 'youngest' title, Lili beat him to it), he's also one of the most renowned by the time he's an adult. He's featured in True Psychic Tales on a regular basis, and he still buys all the issues (and frames the ones he's in). Also he speaks German, Russian, and Grulovian, as well as a smattering of other European languages.
Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious
My adult version of Raz has a coat with three glass gems hanging from the back and one from the zipper pull-- or they STARTED as glass. Later on in life while on a mission, he found a suspiciously familiar blue gem-- one of the ones from the Gzar's crown. After the Grulovian royalty pawned off their jewels to maintain their lifestyles, the gems themselves were removed and ended up going around among shady rich people as status objects. Raz, as a half-Grulovian, decided to make a point to steal these back. So this mf is running around with thousands of dollars' worth of gems on his patchy-ass coat until he can find a Grulovian museum curator to give them to, to restore some of his country's heritage. It's a personal sidequest. Nobody else knows about this fact, because he's pretty sure Hollis would pop a gasket.
Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
Raz has this odd fear of having someone give him a mental checkup. Even ten years later, he's been evading Hollis to avoid the mandated check-up, but he knows it's healthy and doesn't really know why it makes him so nervous. It's because he doesn't fully realize that his archetypes are more than just archetypes, he's plural. One of those sides, a side he's afraid to acknowledge, sounds an awful lot like that part of his nona's life they try not to talk about...
Bonus kinda-sad HC: In spite of being in TPT numerous times, and being every kid's favorite camp counselor, and never failing a mission, Raz is constantly surprised when people recognize his hard work, and ALWAYS forgets he's been in TPT when someone brings it up. He cannot fathom being recognized for his work. (And as a side-effect of his checkup-dodging, Hollis has a stack of 'Employee of the year' certificates she hasn't been able to give him yet).
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
I'm never one to disregard canon, but I'm gonna go ahead and insist that Raz can still use invisibility and shield, and eventually figured out how to do the throwing-knife-form Psi-blasts because they're AWESOME and I love them. Raz experiments with powers and has been encouraged by Sasha a number of times to get a degree or write a thesis, which he's considered but doesn't really get why he'd put in the time to write when he could be on missions, and anyway he's sure someone else has figured these things out too (They haven't).

So it's pretty obvious to see that my timeline of the Spiralverse is hiiiighly different compared to the in-game, despite how I do try to follow certain plot beats, so I compiled yet another list to show what All of my OCs are doing throughout it!

My curse continues, Nintendo canceled my Bayo 3 order without sending me an email or having any indication on my orders page so now I gotta wait until I can get it delivered from another place, luckily they still had Trinity Editions so I didn't lose that at least. Thanks for reccing that short story with Judith I hadn't read it yet, good call. Most important Nona update from my progress, the nature of The Locked Tomb is you'll just be innocently reading and then a character starts reading from r/RelationshipAdvice and slaps you across the face despite the fact you should really know better by now. I've only known Nona for a hundred pages but I love her
the gods of pre-ordering have not been kind to you this year. :(
I'm glad you have Nona now though. it was so good and there's nothing I enjoy more than the moments that are like TAMSYN WHYYYYY when I get a really bad pun or meme reference. love that so much
the thing with the locked tomb books that's really funny to me is that Serious Book Reviewers and people who fancy themselves "literature enthusiasts" tend to not like them that much, especially harrow and nona. like the complaint i saw in reviews was about 'nothing happens!' and 'why are we focusing on these people for so long!!! why aren't exciting things happening??' and 'none of these characters are likeable!' and it amuses me because they weren't the intended audience of the books i think, or not of those parts. and they don't really understand that. can't understand that i'd say. the tight focus on characters feels a lot more like what fandom communities thrive on. also the love of characters who are just terrible absolute messes and awful people in a funny way. i feel so catered to by this series haha. with TM's background in fic writing and her inclusion of the tumblr meme culture popping up all over it's always felt like we were the audience she was aiming for with those things and obviously it worked great. with the reviewers it's like...imagine if someone came to tumblr and attempted to take it seriously. ye gods. F in the chat, etc
(also the writing is extremely good. i'm not saying it's like a tumblr shit post. it's excellently crafted and using very unique and distinctive styles and creative ways to deconstruct styles too AND has the hilarity of a great shit post. beautiful)
I'm gonna be passing on bayo 3 (not over the voice actor drama since that was sketchy from the get go and turned out to be a mess. other stuff), but what I saw of the combat and design looked pretty cool (especially the summons) so there's probably a lot of good stuff in there to enjoy. hopefully Nona will keep you busy until you can get a copy!

the interns DEFINITELY didnt have dream fluffs during the maligula battle and i am imagining raz, still processing the general Hell Week, wanting to give the interns dream fluffs and psipops to keep on them at all times but some of them are busy so he ends up doing stuff like putting bags of psipops in the boxes in morris's treehouse or putting dream fluffs on lizzie's bedside table or whatever. "Is he trying to give these to us or is he hoarding these and this is a gesture of trust? " "Gifts"
They all end up with so many dream fluffs and psi-pops. They tell Raz they don't have anything to hold them in, and the next week he shows up with handmade bags from Nona. They are NOT allowed to turn these down.

Crier's War By Nina Varela
Tumblr media
4 Stars
I have yet to see a bad thing mentioned about this book and I can see why. But I also don't see much said about it either. I only see this popped up on wlw enemies to lovers lists. Honestly I picked this book up because I walked into a queer bookshop like 8 months ago to pick up Nona, and just so happened to trip and accidently pick this up and The Unbroken and stumbled into paying for it. Completely accidentally. I had barely any idea what this was about, I just saw this gorgeous cover and felt some steampunky vibes to it.
I'm not to sure what to class this really it's not really sci-fi, steam punk ain't a perfect fit either. I loved this lore and world I had one issue with this story.
Ayla unrealistically trusted/cared for Crier way to quickly, I understood Crier trusting the woman that just saved your life but Ayla going from "I'm going to kill Crier" to sleeping in her bed and having a crush on someone she keeps calling a leech was to unbelievable to me.
But the deception, betrayal, drama, mystery was stuff I was living for. I even loved the ending with how Ayla seemed to break and Crier grew. Chefs kiss. The only reason Iron Heart isn't on my shelf right now is because I'm *trying* to be a responsible adult and read a few more books before I buy another.
Finished January 19th

What is your favorite family tradition and why?
When I think of family traditions, 2 pop into my head right off the bat. Growing up my family has always been super close and taught it. For a while it was just my mom and her 5 kids. During that time I believe that’s when we all got super connected without even realizing it. We would spend every single weekend down in Orange County with my nona to give my mom a break. Thanksgiving to Christmas was always the best time of the year for my family growing up.
The first family tradition that pops in my head is that we always bake Christmas cookies the day or a couple days after thanksgiving. We bake so many cookies there’s enough to feed a whole village. From the most basic cookies like chocolate chips to the cookies that literally have to sit overnight to bake like molasses, those are my favorite. The favorite part for us kids growing up is the sugar cookies. My mom and nona would cut the dough out in all sorts of Christmas shapes so that we could decorate them. I don’t think anyone ever actually liked eating the sugar cookies but somehow they would all be gone. Baking cookies with the family will always be a tradition that will fall down through all of our generations.
The second family tradition that comes to mind is how we celebrate Christmas Eve. Every single Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember we would all spend watching “White Christmas” the 1954 holiday classic. That movie holds a special place in my heart. It brings so much joy and holiday cheer. Ever since becoming an adult and that Christmas spirit has gone away, whenever I watch that movie it all comes flooding back and I’m back at my nana's house laying on the floor with all my siblings. Unfortunately that tradition has only followed me and my older brother. It is and will forever be my favorite family tradition and I cannot wait to show it to my kids and keep the tradition going.
