Byler theory, Mike’s point of view through the seasons

SEASON FOUR

This is the biggest season we have for Byler!

In the first episode of the season we find out that it’s day 185, it’s been six months since they moved and 8 months since Hopper’s death. El writes to Mike but her letters are almost all filled with lies, she has lost her powers, she’s just a normal girl now… she tells Mike that Will is painting a lot but he won’t show her what he’s working on… maybe it is for a girl? She thinks he likes someone? Will is acting weird…

She tells Mike that she has friends and good grades and everything is going perfectly in Lenora… but that’s a lie, she is being bullied and she’s failing at school, she decides to lie to Mike… why?

She feels insecure. Mike is not emotionally present for her... he is not communicating with her as she wants him to, and she thinks it’s her fault because she is different so she tries to be someone that she’s not for him… but it's clear that she does love him, she always signs the letters as ‘’Love, El’’ /ih

Mike is reading her letter but he is late, he panics… we have him look like Freddie Mercury in his first scene, open closet and sign pointing to it… because why the fuck not?

We see that Mike this year is back to playing d&d because now it’s a cool thing that even high schoolers do, so he doesn’t have to grow up too fast like he wanted last year, he can still play… he also misses Will a lot and d&d reminds him of the old days when all his party was together!

He is leaving for Lenora tomorrow at 6:30 but he wants to stay out past 9, he has the Hellfire club tonight… his parents say to come home before 9 or he can’t go, he is annoyed but okay… he goes to school, he talks to Dustin about El and the first thing on his mind about her is that El saved the world twice… she is still a superhero!

they find out that Lucas has the basketball game tonight and Mike is annoyed about that too, why is Lucas trying to be popular now? Mike doesn’t want to be popular, he wants his party back to normal, he wants Lucas with them and he wants Will back and everything to go back how it was.

Lucas tells him that he is tired of being bullied and he is doing it for all of them, they have to ask Eddie to move the game and come to his basketball game…

Mike doesn’t understand this because the only thing that brings him happiness now are the hellfire games… and Lucas is never playing he is always on the bench anyway so why can’t he just come to the game like he used to do?

Mike wants to go back in time.

He is now basically not talking with Will because Will is not calling him and every time he tries to call the line is occupied by Joyce because of her stupid work!

Mike hates stupid high school.

Everything sucks, he was bullied again at the beginning of high school… Lucas is pulling away from them to play basketball, Will is gone, El is gone and he doesn’t even know if he loves her and they are in a weird place with each other because he can’t bring himself to even write it down, he misses William more than anyone else and he can’t talk about it with anyone because that’s a weird thing to experience, and he doesn’t even know who to tell.. he can’t tell his mother, he can’t tell the others because they all love Eleven too…

Max is not talking to them much, she left Lucas and they only see each other at school now, Dustin is closer to Mike but he still is not Will… he doesn’t understands him like Will did… Mike feels like a loser and a nerd and he feels angry most of the time.

At least there is d&d in his life, and this new cool guy… Eddie!!!

Forced conformity is killing the kids!!!

He is so cool!!

He took them in their little group and now they are not being bullied much and they have fun sometimes at school and in the club… They listen to Lucas anyway because they are still best friends but Eddie doesn’t want to move the game and now they have to play and find a sub for Lucas...

They find Erica, they play and they win and everything is fine but this also is a bad sign for the group, Lucas feels more distant after this game...

Mike leaves to Lenora. He arrives at the airport... he is nervous because it’s been many months since he saw them and he doesn’t know how to act with them... he is dressed weird, like he feels, and it shows because he is also acting weird!

El is there and they kiss and hug and it’s nice, he gives her the present, she said she liked the flowers in her last letter so he took the flowers…

and there he is, his best friend… can he call him like that now? And wow he is different, grown up.. pretty?… it’s weird seeing each other again when they haven’t talked much… Mike feels weird, he wants to hug him but he feels SO AWKWARD!

So he goes for an half hug and he avoids the full hug on purpose… but he doesn’t even know what he is doing…. Awkward….

And what’s that?

The painting that El talked about in her letter? The painting for the girl he likes? Will likes girls now? Is that why he is not calling me anymore? Is he thinking about her? Will doesn’t say anything about the painting to Mike so he doesn’t insist…

There is also this weird dude with long hair that hugs him and insults his outfit and interrupts him and Will… awkward.

El is talking about going to eat burrito for breakfast now and that’s weird to Mike… But he says okay ahah …. He trusts her but… you know, it’s a little weird….

(MIKE I WILL KICK YOUR ASS STOP TREATING EL LIKE THAT!!!!!!)

Will notices that Mike is acting weird with El too...

El then says that after that they can go to rink o mania and Mike asks about her friends…

Will is confused because she is lying to Mike

She literally made up an entire imaginary life because opening up emotionally to Mike is more difficult then doing that…..

Anyway, Mike keeps on the act... and he is a good caricature of himself, he is the perfect boyfriend now!

Even if he can’t tell her I love you at least he took the flowers for her and he tried to dress cooler and more normal for her and he is being affectionate now… everything is fine! Everything is normal!

They are at the date at rink o mania now, this place is cool… does El come here a lot with her new cool friends? Does Will? Oh, okay, she says he doesn’t… but she goes to parties here? She is invited to parties and he is not?

Well, of course she is.

Mike can feel the tension now because he notices that Will is already acting a bit weird with him and El… he comes back with the socks and tries to make a joke but Will doesn’t laugh… he tries to ignore him and focus on El but he knows that Will is acting moody and weird and he doesn’t understand why!

Now they are having Milkshakes and a blonde girl approaches them… oh, she’s Angela, El’s new friend… ok!

Nice to meet you…. Heard a lot about you!

So, El talked a lot about her in her letters?

She invented a lot of stuff?

Angela takes El away and Mike is dumb as fuck and doesn’t notice anything weird with this... until he sees that Will is worried.

He asks what’s happening and Will finally tells him!

El is lying to him?

Bullshit!!!

But Will insists and Mike believes him, Will doesn’t lie… Will never lied to him.

El is being bullied in front of him... he doesn’t know what to do but he has to protect her!

He goes to the music guy and tries to make him stop but no one listens to him and he doesn’t know what to do… They throw the milkshake on El but he can’t even find a way to reach her, he is feeling powerless..

El runs away from him because she doesn’t feel safe with him, she doesn’t seek comfort in him, she isolates herself in a closet…

Now Mike and Will are looking for her but they can’t find her and Mike is angry… he is angry at El because she lied to him all these past months, he is angry at Will because Will is not calling him and they are not talking and he didn’t tell him that El was having problems because of that, because he doesn’t want to be his best friend anymore, he doesn’t want to be close to Mike anymore… he missed Will so much and Will doesn’t really care!

He was being a douche to her all day and to Mike too… Mike was watching him.. Will was rolling his eyes, moping, barely talking! He basically sabotaged the whole day!

‘’ and what about us?’’

Mike is taken aback from this… he wasn’t expecting the implications.. what is Will saying?

Will says he thinks that Mike doesn’t care about what he has to say?

That’s not true!!!! He tried to talk to him! He tried to call!

El has a book of letters because she is my girlfriend and you send letters only to your girlfriend…...

“ and us?”

Mike doesn’t understand why Will is saying this.. they are only friends, or not?...

Then Will says it: ‘’ We used to be best friends!’’

Oh... so that is why... Will was not making this romantic, Mike was thinking he was... He is so weird for this…

but still!

HE CALLED HIM!

Why is he the bad guy here????

No!

Mike responds to that telling Will that maybe he could have reached out more to him

Why didn’t you, William?

I felt lonely too… I felt lost without you.

Will is speechless because Mike is right.

Will didn’t reach out enough because he was dealing with his own feelings for Mike and he also thought that Mike didn’t want to talk to him, he saw how El got letter after letter but he got a few calls and that’s all? He was angry at Mike… he was afraid that he was losing him and he just didn’t know what to do about it… he thought that maybe the painting would help restore their friendship because Mike always loved his art… so he made that for Mike.. but now what’s the point in giving it to him?

El goes to Angela and asks her to fix the situation and make Mike believe a lie again… Angela tells her no and talks about Hopper, El snaps (rightly so) and hurts Angela…

Mike is shocked and a bit scared of her now, what did El do? What? Isn’t El the superhero? Why did she take revenge on a girl like that? Why is she lying to him about everything and then acting like a violent person?

They go home and Mike is feeling distant from El and Will too… he is angry with Eleven because she lied to him and friends don’t lie… he can’t talk about it with Will because they had that fight and he is still feeling weird about that… he doesn’t feel like comforting El or being near her now… they have dinner and Mike makes that dumb comment...

he thinks that though… Angela was not fine, El did hurt her badly for no real reason because she was not actively hurting anyone…

When El hurt the bullies in s1 they had just tried to kill Dustin with a knife… it was justified then.. this wasn’t… what kind of person is El? Does he really know her?

He is not hungry either, he is playing with the food in his plate… He feels awful.

It’s the morning after. Mike woke up less angry and now he thinks he needs to talk to her, they need to fix things… don’t they? He goes to her bedroom with food and tries to open the conversation… He says it: he doesn’t understand…. Why didn’t she open up to him about it? He was bullied too… all his life… he was never mr. popularity

She shuts him down first, she tells him that even if he was bullied he doesn’t understand how it feels to be different, how it feels to be a monster, he too, looked at her like she was a monster yesterday, he was afraid of her… El is smart and she noticed that he was scared of her…

he doesn’t like this at all, he is a bit hurt by her comments about him not understanding how being bullied feels but he also doesn’t think that she is a monster and he doesn’t want her to think that he does so he says it’s not true, she can’t really think that.. he cares about her so much…

‘’care… but you don’t love me anymore?’’ El knows it.

He deflects… he knows what they are talking about because he never said I love you to her face, not even once.

‘’You never say it’’

‘’I say it.’’ Boyfriends lie… all. the. time.

‘’You can’t even write it, Mike!’’

‘’FROM, MIKE’’

He NEEDS to deflect now, he needs to fix this because he can’t lose El but he can’t say it until he is sure... because it would be a lie, a big big lie to her face and he just can’t do that, that’s too much even for him now, he can’t lie and say it if he doesn’t even know how it feels!!!!

‘’Eleven, you are being ridiculous… what is this? You are the most incredible person in the world! And you can’t let OTHER PEOPLE ruin us! ’’ (Gaslight king in action!!!! What other people, Mike? You are the problem here)

The fault is on OTHER PEOPLE all the time… except when Mike does something to Will, then it’s his, he takes responsibility immediately only with Will.

‘’ other people are nobodies and you are a superhero!’’

Eleven is watching him now and she just understands… he doesn’t love her, not really, not like he should… she lost all hope there and she is not a superhero anymore… ( maybe she is even the monster like they all said... Lucas in s1... Kali says in s2 that every normal person would think that they were monsters…were they right? )

Eleven gets arrested.

Mike panics! NOT AGAIN! He can’t keep losing people like this… he should protect them and he can’t!!! He is useless once again… he wants to fix this, he needs to be the savior, he wants to be the superhero!

He tells her: Everything is going to be okay, I will fix this!

She doesn’t believe it anymore.

She will fix it herself…

She’s taken by Owens and leaves a note for Mike.

she tells him: Dear Mike, I have gone to become a superhero again. From, El.

Aka… Dear Mike, I will become a superhero again, don’t worry about me, I can look out for myself…. From, Eleven (I know you don’t love me like you should)

This is Mike’s reaction:

Now Mike and Will are in Jonathan’s room. Will is ranting about the situation and he is worried about El and about his mother… Mike is still watching the letter… How can he fix this? Does this mean that they are over? She doesn’t need him anymore? She doesn’t need his protection anymore?

Will decides he wants to help Mike… he tells him the letter will not change even if he keeps staring, Mike throws it in the trash, he doesn’t want to see it anymore… he doesn’t want to think about it really… but he can’t stop thinking about it so he does the thing he wanted to do for a whole year: he talks to Will… he opens up, he tells him that he had a bad fight with El and he doesn’t think it’s a fight they can solve… it was a serious fight, adult… he can’t fix this because he doesn’t feel the love he should feel for her.. but maybe if he had lied to her he could have gone with her and he could have at least tried to protect her… Will knows exactly what to say to calm him down… he can still solve this when they meet again, El is going to be fine because she’s not in Hawkins, the danger is there and they have to save everyone and be the heroes again.. like they did saving Will, like Mike did saving Will….

Mike likes to hear this! He was the hero.. Will is right..

Will is funny too and they share a chuckle together! <3

Jonathan has a plan to go back to Hawkins, they call argyle and get ready to leave…

they are back in Will’s room now and Mike feels better after talking to Will… he loves Will, he missed him so much and he really needed that talk!

He sits on the bed and he decides that he has to say thank you to him, Mike is grateful for Will.

Will asks him ‘’for what?’’ and he says the truth ‘’ I was being a total self pitying idiot’’

Will flirts with him a little now

‘’I didn’t say it.’’

‘’You didn’t have to…’’ Mike responds, smiling to him… Will didn’t have to say anything, Will understands him and his feelings better that anyone else in the world… Mike still asks himself how he does it… He hopes he can do the same for him…

Mike decides that he wants to apologize to him about the fight they had at rink o mania too..

Will tries to say he deserved it but Mike stops him: No! You didn’t deserve it, you were right, El was lying to me… you were honest with me and I appreciate that. I love that about you… and I’m sad that we are a bit distant now so I will say it… ‘’The truth is, the last year, has been weird, you know?’’ I missed you more than my girlfriend.... ‘’ and I mean, you know, Max and Lucas and Dustin they’re great, they’re great… It’s just… It’s Hawkins. It’s not the same without you.’’

My life is not the same without you, I didn’t know how to live this year without you in it. I tried to focus on everything else to survive…

‘’And I feel like maybe, I was worrying too much about El… and, I don’t know, maybe I feel like I lost you or something… Does that make sense?’’ Do you feel the same?

And Will is thinking – YES I FEEL LIKE THIS TOO. YES IT DOES MAKE SENSE!!!!

‘’I have no idea of what’s gonna happen next… but… whatever it is.. I.. I think we should work together… I think it’ll be easier if we’re… if we’re a team. Friends. Best friends. ’’

I don’t know if El will leave me or not or if we will even survive this new thing that’s coming for us but… I want you back in my life.. I want us to be a team again, I want to go back to being how we were before all the fights… I want you with me in the future…don’t leave me too…

‘’Cool’’ I want that too. I’m not leaving you, ever. It’s not possible, remember that?

‘’Cool’’

*flirting session is interrupted by annoying cars*

Will heard that… Will has a suspicion that MAYBE his feelings are not unrequited… so he decides to take the painting with him, he wants Mike to have it now…

*they get shot at*

*mr. agent man dies*

They have more shared trauma! How sweet!!!!!! (FUCK YOU DUFFER BROTHERS)

They are now in the desert, the gays are burying the body this time! Cool!

Argyle is freaking out and he says that the government will kill Eleven, Mike is worried for her… They don’t know how to find her. He feels useless again.

He looks at Will for comfort because he always does that when he is worried about something.

Will sees it and he approaches Mike to talk again because he is an angel that deserves only gold and good things…

Now they are recreating the jancy parallel n° One billion and are sitting on a car, sharing a drink and talking about feelings… Mike says the same thing as before… if only he had lied to El he would be there with her now to protect her and be the hero! But he didn’t know what to say in that moment… he didn’t feel it and he had no answer for Eleven in that moment… he thinks he should have explained himself to her but he doesn’t really know what the problem is himself… he doesn’t understand himself…

Will tells him that it’s difficult to open up, he talks about himself in code but Mike is the dumbest idiot on earth, he doesn’t get it… he applies it only to himself! That’s it.. maybe he is scared that El would not like the truth? He nods.

*lovely heart to heart gets interrupted by Argyle*

They find a way to find Eleven, Mike has a plan! He feels useful again! They go to Suzie… there Mike and Will work as a team… they find a way to get the information they need and they take off again!

They are in the van.

Mike is still worried about finding El… Will tries to make him smile and reassure him a little saying that when they find El they can become rich in las Vegas and spend the rest of their lives just playing Nintendo and D&D and Mike likes this idea now, he loves Will, he likes d&d and Nintendo and… he says "totally!" But he is still pretty worried that El could be in danger, he is also feeling guilty because he is not there to protect her… he feels like he needs to..

but at the same time he starts thinking about it and he knows that El doesn’t need him, not really, he is just a random nerd that found a girl with superpowers that liked him and the truth is that it was just dumb luck, it wasn’t fate, it was not meant to be… she will understand that she doesn’t need him in her life and break up with him. He likes El and he doesn’t want to break up yet.. he wants the superhero to need him.. he wants to be Lois Lane at least if he can’t be superman… but he feels like he is even less important than Lois Lane… he then stops… the world is about to end and he is worrying about being needed by someone? Idiot.

Will tells him immediately: No, you can talk to me, I understand… you are scared of losing her… I know this because I am scared of losing you…

Will hears Mike’s feelings and he knows what to do, he can’t stand seeing Mike like this, talking this badly about himself… he wants to make him feel loved, he wants Mike to know that for him he is the hero… he makes him feel special… Will needs him… but he can’t tell him… so he uses the painting and he uses El as a proxy for his feelings… he gives the painting to Mike and Mike loves it, he smiles, he tells Will that it’s amazing! He really means that Will is amazing…is this painting for him from Will? Wow… Will is so pretty in this angelic light btw !

But… Will starts saying that it was El that told him what to paint for Mike…? Mike is listening to this and he thinks, well… that’s weird… why would El do this? She told me a different thing in the letter…. But then again… El was lying to him for months so the answer is that she lied to him about the painting too!

Will never lies to him.

Will goes on and Mike is listening to this and he thinks El thinks this about him… and …. He feels it. He feels loved. He finally feels like saying I love you. He is watching Will… he is mesmerized by him, he thinks Will is the best person on this planet… Will is so.. wise!

He smiles at him in the end, and that smile is only for Will... and he is thinking I am amazed by him. I adore him.

He finally felt it… he felt love for the first time… but… he thinks it must be for Eleven… he doesn’t get that Will was talking about himself!

He doesn’t notice Will crying because Will has learned how to mask his feelings too well, Will is hiding and Mike just goes back to stare at the painting because he is so happy that he finally feels it…

They find El, they reunite!

Mike is happy that she’s alive and she’s okay and she has her powers back too! They hug and they share a sweet moment but it doesn’t feel natural to kiss her now... he’s not really thinking about it but he just feels like this so he hugs her but then he point out that Will is there too!

*Will and El hug!*

WILLEL IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL THING IN THE UNIVERSE

and this hug is very similar to Mike and El’s hug… things have changed a bit.

She now knows that she doesn’t need Mike tbh… she doesn’t need his love anymore, she knows who she is, she is not the monster. Maybe she is still the superhero? She wants to try to save her friends in Hawkins.

Now they are trying to find a way back to Hawkins and Mike is worried for his family and his friends there, they can’t find a way back… Mike still feels like staying close to Will, he feels drawn to him like always but he doesn’t let himself think about it too much…

He wants to fix things with El too though, they are now in the pizza place, sitting on the booth and Mike is preparing to tell her how he feels… he tries to but it’s more difficult than what he thought… he tries…

‘’I guess… I just… I dunno... I guess I just wanted to say that- ‘’

Argyle is a Byler shipper and he arrives to make Mike eat fruit on his pizza because that’s gay and Argyle loves all the queer people!

And now we get to the big moment: Eleven is dying! Mike is scared af for her, he needs to save her! He doesn’t know what to do…. Until… Will tells him that he is the heart, he needs to talk to her and bring her back to them!

Save her, Mike, please!

Mike turns around and he watches Will and he remembers the conversation in the van and he feels it again, he remembers it… and he responds to that speech like it was El who thought all of that!

He feels like he can finally tell her that he loves her, he believes he does love her like that, and now he thinks he can be vulnerable because he believed Will's speech is how El thinks about him and their relationship, he was really scared that she wouldn’t need him in her life and they were not compatible anymore before that, but Will's speech made him think that she will always need him how he wants her too... she won't leave him and she loves him exactly how he wants to be loved....

but... it's a lie!

so the love confession is not enough to give El the strenght to save Max and win against Vecna... the love between Mike and El is not true love, and the monologue was born from a lie… it was born from the feelings of a third party, Will!

Eleven watches Max and she understands that if she doesn’t fight like Mike is now telling her to do, Max will die… she loves Max and that’s true love!!!!

She is able to free herself and save Max in the end with the love she has for her…but it’s a little too late to save Hawkins

They lost, she lost… she is not the monster but now she is not the superhero either like Mike wants her to be...

They don’t show anything after this for two days but they tell us that El is almost not talking to anyone… not even Mike… they don’t show us El responding to the I love you, they don’t show us them saying it again to each other when she wakes up after the bath scene… they just don’t… they make them go back to Hawkins, Mike and El seem to be okay in the hospital before El understands that Max is not inside her body…. El has lost Max!

This is a big hit for everyone, El saved Max’s life though and that’s astonishing to Mike… he watches Will in the hospital, they understand each other once again, this is big!

Back at the cabin they try to fix up the place, El gives a side eye to Mike before going to her room and slamming the door with her powers but leaving the 3 inches open for Hopper… Mike seems worried again, Eleven doesn’t look for comfort in Mike at all… she understood that SHE doesn't love Mike? We don’t know for sure!

Mike talks to Will again, he is there for him and comforts him like he did in s2 … Vecna is still alive, Will can feel him… Will needs Mike too now, he will be there for him and they will stop Vecna together, as a team.

in the end, he just loves seeing you have a smile on you face. wether it be from anger, sadness, happiness, pride, it never fails to make him happy. it gives him motivation to go through another day, to just see your smile once again.

it it will take a while for him to get used to physical touch, he strives me as the person whos not a fan of touching people.

but he tries to learn, he tries hard to learn for you.

i think. i think you guys both visit operas.

He always brings you roses in hand before the opera. the gift drastically changes, from a pearl necklace, written poems, chocolayes. all gifts are symbolic, and represent an espect of you.

Alrighty! Let’s start by rehashing the relevant units of time: one decaphoeb (year) is made up of ten phoebs (months), which are themselves comprised of eight movements (weeks), each with five quintants (days)—so that's a nice clean 400 quintants per decaphoeb—and I’ll also drop in Daibazaal's decaphoebal cycle as illustrated in my fertility post, because without a visual aid this is just going to be me throwing around a bunch of made-up words like a madwoman.

((oh, and I’d recommended reading my post on galra religions if you want some more in-depth information on the names I’m going to drop below, but I’ll still explain the broad strokes well enough that lack of familiarity with it shouldn't hinder you))

[[ spring: eyiintak || summer: ury'cht / li'xann / puinyk / khaiivrep't / hiikyl || autumn: a'vael || winter: nydaan / sa'rhyan / sa'meih ]]

So decaphoebs on Daibazaal actually began with the last phoeb of winter, Sa'meih, and ended on the last quintant of Sa'rhyan, which was not-at-all-coincidentally the winter solstice... and if you've noticed the similarity in those two names, that's no coincidence either, but let's try to go about this in an orderly fashion, shall we?

Sa'meih [[ s-ar-meh-ih ]] - as the first phoeb of the cycle, symbolic of new beginnings, Sa'meih honours the two celestial creators: Sa, the Divine Mother—she who is both architect and devourer, everything and nothing, the beginning and end to all things—and the Divine Twin L’lameih, believed by the Diij to be the creator of our universe, and by the Drui to be the progenitor of those blessed few who can wield quintessence (the sa naacht).

Eyiintak [[ ee-yin-tah-k ]] - named for Eyii, the great celestial beast who—according to the Eyikh—swims through the endless void and leaves in their wake waves crested in a foam of stardust, which spill out across space and time to become the universe we now call home. Just as the tsaii hunt Eyii across the endless expanse of eternity, so too do followers of the Eiyyka’an Faith perform the fertility festival known as the Divine Hunt—a decaphoebal reenactment of Eyii’s pursual—in the belief that a successful display will facilitate fertility twofold: first by summoning the bountiful monsoon season that sustained Daibazaal’s lush jungles, and second by blessing the the galra estrous period (with which this phoeb coincides) to produce numerous healthy offspring.

Ury’cht [[ oo-r-ee-kh-t ]] - Uryan was a star visible in Daibazaal’s night sky that shone a brilliant gold, and was believed by the desert tribes to be the eye of Sa herself, while the suffix -cht stems from the word Naacht (see. li naacht), and denotes a deep-rooted devotion. This phoeb was so-named because the monsoons that raged throughout would obscure the skies with such endless severity that the galra believed themselves to be beyond Sa’s watchful gaze and therefore Her protection, leaving them at the mercy of the untamed world until the rains passed and she could find them once more.

Li’xann [[ lee-z-ah-n ]] - an amalgamation of the name Xann—the Eiyyka’an tsai of unchecked bloodlust—and “li” meaning “blood”. By this phoeb the monsoons have come to an end, though the last remnants of them could whip up sandstorms so thick and fierce that they could strip the meat from the bones of lesser creatures than the galra. Here is where the true summer heat begins to set in.

Puinyk [[ p-uh-win-ee-kh ]] - named for Puiyn of the Aalk, a fierce warrior believed to have lived a thousand glorious lives and died a thousand glorious deaths, making him the first mortal being to earn the status of tsai. This phoeb ends on the summer solstice, whereupon the Jaev—in a celebration of the blessed life gifted to them by the divine patronage of the tsai, who serve and protect the living—offer appeasement in the form of galra sacrifice. It is believed that the sacrifice will immediately ascend to the status of tsai, and so hundreds fight for the honour every decaphoeb.

Khaiivrep’t [[ ka-eye-v-reh-pt ]] - an amalgamation of the name Khaiis—the Eiyyka’an tsai of glorious victory—and “vrepit” which denotes triumphant conquest. As this phoeb begins immediately after the solstice, it is believed to mark the transition from the fierce battle against the elements that is the first half of the decaphoeb (with its monsoons and sandstorms and ever-rising heat) to the more clement latter half. In the modern day it is considered a sacred month wherein blood is not shed; instead the galra people ought bask in their victories and enjoy the spoils of war.

Hiikyl [[ h-ih-k-ee-l ]] - an amalgamation of the name Hiidyl—the Eiyyka’an tsai of orphaned children—and “kyl” the ancient term for a haunting or melancholic ballad. Despite the somewhat ominous association, Hiidyl is considered a benevolent being, and so in this phoeb galra from all across Daibazaal would make offerings in their name for the protection and well-being of the community’s children: both those already living, and those soon to come.

A’vael [[ ah-v-ay-el ]] - the phoeb of Vael—the Eiyyka’an tsai of lost souls—who is a particularly sacred figure due to being charged with keeping the reincarnation cycle of quintessence ever-flowing. Vael is said to spend this phoeb guiding newborn galra out into the living world, and those lost in childbirth back to Sa’s embrace (due to the galra having a monestrous fertility cycle, the overwhelming majority of births occur in A’vael). The autumnal equinox occurs at the exact min-point of this phoeb, and for the movement surrounding this event the emerald star Nyd—eye of L’lameih—and the golden star Uryan—eye of Sa—would align; it was believed by the Diij that when this occurred, the dead would rise again to devour the quintessence of the living in an attempt to return themselves to life, and so the Festival of Souls was hosted to appease these restless spirits.

Nydaan [[ n-ee-d-ar-n ]] - Nyd was a star visible in Daibazaal’s night sky that shone a striking emerald, and was believed by the desert tribes to be the eye of the Divine Twin L’lameih, through which she watches over all of creation. As the first phoeb of winter, as well as the first of parenthood for many galra, this phoeb was thus named in the hopes that L’lameih’s benevolent attentions would see them through the darkest time of the decaphoeb.

Sa’rhyan [[ s-ar-ree-ah-n ]] - as the final phoeb of the cycle, symbolic of endings, Sa'meih honours the two celestial devourers: Sa, the Divine Mother—she who is both architect and devourer, everything and nothing, the beginning and end to all things—and the Divine Twin Rhya’ahl, believed by the Diij to be the father of a universe that exists as a putrid shadow of our own, and by the Drui to be the progenitor of the savage yet sacred rhyahl who roamed Daibazaal’s desert plains hungering for quintessence. Immediately preceding the winter solstice—the final day of Sa’rhyan—was the Drui festival of D’raen: two full movements (ten quintants) of feasting and revelry to mark the end of one solar cycle and the beginning of the next. This bacchanal would conclude with the ritual sacrifice of the Vrokra (champion of the first quintant’s tournament) to the Rhyahl, in the hope that the tribe’s most valiant warrior would sate Rhya’ahl’s appetite for another decaphoeb.

And there you have it!

Secondly! I would love to know more about the worldbuilding and the countries and stuff :D they sound super cool!

I'm gonna take that as an invitation to start ranting now lmao. Thanks!

Ok, so here are all the countries and cities I've come up with.

Pemoki (Puh-mo-kee): It's cold there. King's an incompetent figurehead, but a lot of Kenacian refugees flock there anyway because the Pemokese don't restrict immigration like a lot of other countries in that region do.

Drosil (Dro-sill): Southern city. Southern Pemoki is generally full of luxurious mansions, government buildings, and unsuspecting rich people. And Drosil's where the prissiest of the prissy come from. It's also the capitol.

Suvlin (Soov-leen): This is where Catherine and her siblings live. Very northern. Very rural. Primarily a refugee town. Lots of farmland and forest, and not too many buildings.

Vijeszka (Vee-yesh-ka): Also a refugee town, but more urban. Lots of overcrowded apartments. This is where Ernest Wolbert lives, and where Lyn used to live before he married Catherine.

Baliszka (Bah-leesh-ka): Another southern town. Lots of fancy shit. It's basically Pemoki's other cultural center besides Drosil, but with less government stuff.

Ksatvaj (Ksaht-vai): A central city, but close enough to Suvlin that Catherine can ride a horse there and back on the same day. Known for its community of retired veterans. Catherine goes there sometimes to buy stuff because she doesn't trust the quality of most goods and services in Suvlin and Vijeszka.

Lewyndanil (Luh-win-duh-neel): South of Pemoki. Aorin was born here. It's pretty and temperate, and also a good place to get stalked by members of the Miaccoran mafia. (But more on that in book 2.)

Kavjanna (Kahv-yah-nuh): The capitol. Very different from the Pemokese capitol. If you're looking for nice, pleasant parts of Lewyndanil, go literally anywhere else. There's a lot of government buildings in the center of Kavjanna, and that part of the city's pretty decent, but everything surrounding it is extremely shady.

Aleon (Aah-lay-yon): Pemoki's powerful neighbor / Adrona's birthplace. They're semi-involved in the war with Kenacia, but only because they're scared that if Levi conquers too many little, insignificant countries, he'll eventually be big enough and powerful enough to challenge Aleon. I don't have any cities for Aleon yet because nobody really goes there at any point in the story. It's more of a background presence.

Kenacia (Ken-ay-sha): Formerly a country nobody ever thought about, except to say, "Man, that King John sure was awful", but now that Levi's king, he's determined to turn Kenacia into a world power.

Thaeryvon (Teer-ih-von): The capitol. Center of a lot of corrupt garbage. Levi lives here, as do all of his military advisors (and technically the rest of his cabinet, but they're not important). Winson went to school here. Catherine, Lyn, Victoria, Petra, and Eva all used to live here. John Niacera's infamous national military academy was here before it got shut down.

Garrons-Abery (Gare-uhns Ay-buh-ree): Winson was born here. Not much else to say about this place.

Merrianck (Mare-ee-ank): Lots of fishermen live here. And so does Samuel Brown. (More on that in book 3.)

Qhiron (Kee-ruhn): Kenacia's neighbor. First country Levi conquered. Now he basically uses the entire country as a battlefield / supplier of resources for his army. He's pretty much universally hated in Qhiron.

Tophrenica Valley (Tuh-fren-ik-uh): Not technically a city. It's more of a region. But it's important because of its location. The Tophrenica river marks the Qhironese-Kenacian border.

Palchaara Araca (Pahl-kar-uh Ah-rock-uh): A walled city / center of the Qhironese rebellion.

Siomnil (Show-neel): General Aamitok's hometown.

Lardengot (Lar-din-go): Kenacia's largest, strongest fortress.

Miaccora (Mee-uh-kor-uh): Everything is legal here. Place to go if you're an outlaw. Miaccora doesn't become a place where plot stuff actually happens until book 2, so I haven't come up with any specific cities there yet. Stay tuned :P

Here is a gifset of that moment for reference, (it leaves out Orihime’s plea to him to not get hurt, but I’m just talking about the overall aesthetic), but even gifs don't compare to watching and hearing the scene in action. Like the page in the manga was beautiful in itself but, aesthetically speaking, in the anime you can see the colors and definition of the light, the glimmering streams of light surrounding Orihime, to the point that she looks like this giant sun or glowing angel standing on top of the pillar, cascading down onto Ichigo like she's his savior (which, she was lol. Orihime calling out to him was the turning point of the entire Grimmjow battle), and Ichigo looking back at her in slow-motion just completely awestruck, and all you can hear is their breathing, and you see Ichigo's eyes change in surprise, and Orihime's eyes welling up with tears, and the animators made everything kind of white and blurred around the edges so all you can really see as the viewer is their faces--because that's what Ichigo and Orihime were seeing in that moment, completely zoned in on each other to the point that everything surrounding them just disappeared (including Grimmjow, the guy who was just pummeling Ichigo into the ground seconds before).

The anime may have its faults, but I think they did a really beautiful job in that moment and I'm hoping to see more of that in the final arc animation.

It’s the grandest celebration anyone has ever seen in a long while. Nobody has ever seen a happier occasion since the coronation of Queen Historia. The queen herself had prepared this space for this event, insisting that it was a gift to the happy couple. It was the least she could do, really, to reward them for their service to the country. As the island of Paradis moved towards a more hopeful future, the kingdom of Eldia used this occasion to mark the end of the bloody, war-torn years and the start of a future that might treat them with a little bit of kindness.

Since the end of the war, the number of soldiers in the military has dwindled. Many are no longer present after the battle between Eldia and Marley, but there are others that have retired from the force, wishing to live the rest of their lives in peace. It’s the very least of what they deserve after all they have been through. There are a few new recruits, inspired to join after witnessing how bravely the fallen soldiers had fought to win the freedom of all Eldians, but the army is not at all close to what it was before. That’s all and well. Hopefully, it will be a long while before they must go to battle again.

Today, many soldiers, some new and many retired, have come to celebrate. The old veterans rest their weary bones, chatting together as they sip on wine and champagne. The younger soldiers don’t sit but wander about the ballroom the queen had prepared, marveling at the decorations. The newest recruits are too young to properly remember the queen’s coronation. For them, this event is the most extravagant occasion they have ever been to. They stare open-mouthed at the ten-tiered buttercream cake with its frosted flowers and silken ribbons, the freshly cooked lobsters with their red shells shining and gleaming, succulent beef so tender that it falls easily from the bone, fresh salad topped with julienned carrots and juicy tomatoes and thinly sliced cucumbers, thick beef stew with brightly colored vegetables that look like jewels, and so many more that it seems like it will take days to finish.

The soldiers that had graduated from the 104th trainee squad stand around the food tables, taking food as they please. Since the end of the war, they have eaten better than they ever had before, but today’s feast is grander than anything they’ve ever had.

“If you don’t slow down, you’ll choke,” Mikasa tells Sasha.

Sasha is busy stuffing all the food she can in her mouth as quickly as possible. The sight of so many dishes in front of her excited her so much that she had headed towards the tables of food and didn’t even bother to greet the newlywed couple until her friends had dragged her back to say congratulations. Now, she’s back to taking a bite of everything. It’s not that she’s afraid of starving, she explains to her friends at some point, because they all have more than enough to eat now. She’s just worried that she won’t have time to properly enjoy everything by the time the feast is over, so she has to eat everything as quickly as possible.

Jean tilts his head as he observes the brunette who’s currently shoveling five different types of pastries in her mouth. “Does it even taste good?” he asks, genuinely curious. “How can you taste everything if you just put everything into your mouth at once?”

“Ih guh,” Sasha replies with her mouth full. She’s courteous enough to turn her head towards Jean as she speaks so that the spray of crumbs flies all over his clothing instead of in the dishes of steaming hot food.

“Ugh, Sasha!” Jean exclaims in disgust, hurriedly brushing the crumbs off his clothing.

Connie’s hand pops out in front of him, offering napkins. Only Jean takes one. “Thought we might need these,” Connie says with a grin. He takes one and brushes the crumbs off Sasha’s dress, chuckling as he does so.

Mikasa swipes a pastel pink macaron stuffed with strawberries and whipped cream from Sasha, putting it into her mouth whole and smiling rather smugly at the brunette. It’s enough of a distraction for Sasha to forget the food temporarily and stomp her foot down in indignation as she scolds Mikasa for being rude and obnoxious on purpose.

Beside them, Eren nibbles on a sandwich with fluffy white bread and filled with shredded turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumber, and slathered with a thin layer of mayonnaise. To Armin, he asks, “Have you been hearing a strange sound all day? It sounds almost like a siren. It starts kind of softly and then grows and grows only to stop and start up again. I don’t know if there’s something wrong with my ears or something, but I heard it right before the wedding ceremony too.”

“Mmm,” Armin says. He’s the only one in their group that’s actually eating off of a plate, although nobody else seems to mind their manners. He picks off sesame seeds off his bread bun, placing them in a neat pile at the edge of his plate. “I think you might be speaking about the groom. I heard he’s been crying all day.”

“Auruo?” Eren asks. He looks in the direction of the wailing. It comes from outside the ballroom. Now that Eren thinks about it, he does vaguely remember seeing the bride and groom leave the ballroom a few minutes ago, but he didn’t pay it very much attention. “Has he really been crying all day? How does he have that many tears?”

Armin shrugs, but there’s a small smile on his lips. “It must be a very happy occasion for him,” he says. He laughs fondly as he recalls a memory from earlier this morning. “He looked like he was about to burst into tears when he and Petra were exchanging vows.”

Eren looks curiously at the doorway. “I wonder how it must feel to be with someone for the rest of your life.”

“Oh, for goodness’ sake, Auruo, can you please stop crying?” Petra sighs, but she scolds him gently with a smile on her face as she dabs away the tears on her husband’s face with a handkerchief. She stands outside the hallway beside the ballroom with her husband and the members of their former squad. “You’ve cried nearly the whole day. I’m surprised you were even able to hold it in during the ceremony, although I’m glad you did. I don’t know how anyone would be able to hear your vows if you were blubbering the whole time.”

Eld is patting Auruo on the back, laughing. “He might as well have. He was trembling so much while you were reading yours and his face was beet red while he was saying his,” Eld says. “I really thought he wouldn’t make it through the first line without crying again.”

Gunther is the only one who looks remotely concerned. He has a glass of water on hand, offering it to Auruo to drink. “Is it really okay for you to cry this much?” he asks. “You’re going to dehydrate yourself if you keep this up, Auruo.”

“Oh, let him dehydrate himself. At least then he won’t be able to cry anymore,” Levi says but he doesn’t stop Auruo from drinking the glass of water. He leans against the wall with his arms crossed. He doesn’t offer any help, just leaning there to observe his former soldiers. Even though they have all retired, they still refer to him as “Captain.”

Auruo downs the last of the water and hands the empty glass to Gunther, who looks conflicted as to whether he should remain there or get more. Immediately (and to no one’s surprise), Auruo begins to cry again. “I think you’re all heartless,” he sniffs. He takes the handkerchief from his wife and blows into it loudly, sounding not unlike a foghorn. “Why is it that I’m the only one crying at my wedding?”

“I have makeup on and I don’t want to ruin it,” Petra reminds him, “although I probably wouldn’t have cried either way. One of us has to keep it together.”

“I gave a very moving speech at your reception just a few minutes ago,” Levi huffs, clearly offended by being called heartless. The captain did give an uncharacteristically moving speech before the wedding reception started, thanking the two soldiers for their service and congratulating them for moving onto a new stage in life together. Auruo was already in tears by the time Levi said he couldn’t imagine a better couple.

“If it makes you feel any better, I did see a few others crying during the ceremony,” Gunther offers. He tries to remember which guests had been shedding tears during the exchange of rings and vows. “Your parents cried quite a bit and some of the older guests who attended did as well -”

Auruo waves his hand dismissively, unimpressed. “They’re our parents. They’re practically required to cry,” he says. “But you guys. We’ve fought together, haven’t we? And none of you guys even shed a single tear. What’s going to happen at my funeral?”

“A bit early to think about that, isn’t it?” Petra murmurs, but she says it almost affectionately as she brushes a lock of hair from her husband’s face.

“I think Pixis is crying right now. Him and Mitabi,” Eld says, peering into the ballroom where all the guests are dining and dancing under sparkling chandeliers and hanging ribbons. “Although, it’s hard to tell if it’s because Pixis had a little bit too much to drink or if he’s just that touched by the whole ceremony. I think it could be both, actually.”

Auruo waves the handkerchief around. “How is it that they’re more emotional at my wedding than you all are? Are we even really friends? Did we really fight side-by-side? Did we really face life and death together?” he asks almost accusingly.

“I can’t believe you’re questioning our friendship with each other when we fought Titans together,” Eld says with a shake of his head. “You appointed us your groomsmen because you said we were closer to you than brothers! You made Levi your best man!”

“That was clearly a mistake,” Auruo sniffs.

The indignant look on the captain’s face is almost comical.

“It’s alright. I think it’s mostly out of his system now,” Petra says, stroking her husband’s back soothingly. She has to bite her lip to stifle a laugh. She smiles at the rest of her friends and gestures towards the door to the ballroom. “You guys should all go back and have some fun. We’ll be out there soon. You’d better hurry if you want any food. I thought we had enough food for everyone, but it looks like Sasha is making it a mission to prove me wrong.”

“That’s Braus for you,” Levi says with a shake of his head. He pushes off from the wall and gestures for Gunther and Eld to follow him. The former soldiers salute out of habit before the captain scowls at them and the three leave out the door.

When the door has shut behind them, Petra stands in front of her husband and takes his face gently in her hands. “Are you done crying now?” she asks. She squishes her husband’s cheeks together.

“I thought I was, but you just look so beautiful,” Auruo says, sniffling again. He does his best not to blink, but the tears spill over anyone and trickle down his cheeks. After the first tear falls, the rest follow quickly. Auruo is by no means a pretty crier, but Petra looks at him with overwhelming fondness he hastily swipes at his nose with the back of his hand. “Why did you have to go and look so damn beautiful tonight? If I don’t stop crying, it’s your fault.”

Petra laughs and, bringing his face closer to hers, presses a gentle kiss on her husband’s forehead.

The newlyweds return to the reception to thank the guests again and ask if they’re enjoying everything: the food, the drink, the music. Petra’s feet throb in her high heels and her face hurts from smiling so much, but she doesn’t want this night to ever end. Even though Auruo grumbles beside her, asking if it’s really necessary to make another round and talk to people, she knows he feels the same way. They walk arm in arm, Petra resting her head on her husband’s shoulder every chance she gets.

“Shall we talk to my father?” Petra whispers in Auruo’s ear. Her father is probably the only person they haven’t talked to yet. Petra had intentionally kept her husband from her father for as long as possible, but it would be rude to make her father wait any longer to see his daughter with her groom.

Auruo frowns as if just realizing. “Have we not talked to him yet? We should have spoken to him first alongside my parents. He must think I’m a terrible son-in-law already,” Auruo mumbles. He straightens up unconsciously, trying to present his best self to Petra’s father even though everyone who had attended the wedding already knows Auruo’s cried nearly nonstop this whole day. “Why didn’t you take me to your father earlier? Did you not want me to talk to him before?”

“Mmm, yes, honestly,” Petra hums. She tugs her husband to the table where her father is sitting and conversing with Auruo’s parents and some older veterans. When the guests see the bride and groom approach, they smile happily and wave them over. Petra waves back and says through her smile, “I was afraid that once you spoke to my father you wouldn’t be able to stop crying.”

Auruo huffs, offended as if he hadn’t been crying only a minute ago. He tugs on the lapels of his blazer and puffs out his chest. “Cry in front of your father? I would never!” Auruo says with a proud toss of his head. “It would shatter his image of me being the manliest man if I shed even a single tear.”

“I’m sure his feelings towards you would be the same regardless of whether or not you cried in front of him,” Petra titters. She giggles as she steps daintily towards the table, her new husband strutting beside her like a proud peacock.

“Hello, Mr. Ral,” Auruo says with a stiff bow. He wraps an arm around his bride’s waist and smiles. “I hope you’re having a wonderful time. I apologize for not speaking to you until now. I trust my family is giving you good company?”

“Ah, yes, they are delightful,” Petra’s father says with a smile that crinkles the corners of his eyes. He’s a man with a gentle voice that smiles more now than he ever did before the war ended. He often tells his daughter that he finds he has more to smile about now that his daughter is home safe and sound with no more battles to fight. “It’s been so long since I’ve been to a wedding, and such a beautiful one at that. I don’t think I’ve seen my daughter smile as brightly as she has tonight.”

The words are getting to Auruo already even though Petra’s father has hardly said anything. The tips of the groom’s ears are turning bright red and a burst of pink blooms across his cheeks. “Oh, I’m sure you’re just exaggerating,” Auruo says, tugging at the bow tie around his neck. He does his best to appear humble, but anyone can tell that he’s quite pleased and waiting for more praise to come his way.

“No, no, I really do mean it. You make my daughter so very happy, Auruo,” Mr. Ral says, taking his son-in-law’s hands in his and looking up at him with an earnest expression. “I hope that you continue to make her happy, that the two of you have many happy years together, and that you two treasure each other. Please take care of my daughter, Auruo.”

“O-of course, sir. You know I will,” Auruo says. His voice is tight and he quickly looks away, biting his lip. Anyone can tell that he’s about to cry again. In a strained voice he says, “Excuse me. I think I have to attend to the other guests. Do have a good evening, Mr. Ral.”

“Thank you, Auruo,” Mr. Ral smiles. He’s polite enough not to say anything when Auruo hurriedly walks away from the table. He smiles at his daughter. “Take care of your husband, Petra. He’s a good man.”

“I know, Dad,” Petra laughs. She presses a sweet kiss on the top of her father’s head before hurrying off to follow her husband. When she catches up to him, she grabs his hand and tugs him back. Teasing, she asks, “Are you crying again, Auruo?”

“No!” Auruo says. He’s a terrible liar. His eyes are red already, tears streaming down his cheeks once more. He doesn’t move as Petra clucks her tongue and reaches for another handkerchief in the pocket of her gown to wipe away her husband’s tears. “But how do you expect me to stay dry-eyed when your father’s entrusting me to you? He really meant it, Petra. How do you expect me not to cry?”

“It’s not that I don’t want you to cry. I’m just worried. Your eyes are going to be so swollen tomorrow if you keep this up,” Petra tells him with a good-natured sigh. She dabs at the corner of her husband’s eyes gently. “What is our baby going to think when their father cries even more than them?”

“They’ll think their father is amazing for being able to show his emotions so freely,” Auruo sniffs loudly and then pauses. Blinks. He stares at Petra, who looks at him oddly. Slowly, he lifts his hands and then drops them on Petra’s shoulders. Looking her in the eye, he asks, “Did you say … baby?”

Now it’s Petra’s turn to blink. She bites her bottom lip. “Oh, damn,” she mumbles, twisting the handkerchief in her hands. “It’s not that I wanted to keep this from you, but I was worried if I told you you really wouldn’t be able to stop crying.”

Auruo must have been holding out before because he bawls without restraint now, his sobs drawing attention from everyone in the room. Petra has to hold him in her arms and pat his back, shushing him gently as he continues to cry his eyes out.

“Today is the best day of my life,” Auruo sobs into his wife’s shoulder.

Petra strokes her husband’s hair affectionately. “I know, darling,” she smiles. “It’s the best day of mine, too.”

WE BEST LOVE (Fighting Mr 2nd) DEYI and The Theme of Control and Power

You know that show that you know you can talk about forever and be obsessed with, although it seems pretty simple and not really that complicated to analyse and break down? Well, We Best Love (WBL) is precisely that in the most amazing way. I'm not shocked because I've always been a fan of the History Series, especially with this writer and how she creates her projects; it's not surprising that WBL happens to be the most comfortable show to lean into. It feels like entering a cheesy, cute, romantic novel. Yet, it still is the most angsty, passionate, drama-filled plot enough to make you want to run into the screen and comfort these comfort characters, scream at them when they're not making sense, and keep watching despite the pain when you feel like they've gone too far. And I kept quiet and watched season 1 of WBL. I was entranced and in love because it was so simple, but it felt perfect for me; it was a distraction, it made me smile, and it also made my heart quiver. I adored all the actors, and I also enjoyed how the storyline was told. It doesn't have to be so deep and full of clues, but there were facets to the characters, clear set rules in understanding their character roles, and small hints building in the last episode that all was not well and a lot was coming for our couple in the future. It broke my heart because season 1 was focused on the immaturity and naiveness of how we feel when we enter university for the first time; the excitement, but still innocence of hopefully finding someone to mesh with, and yet the dumbness/naivety that can distract us or slow us down before knowing who that person is. Season 1 was light, funny, and sweet because that's how our doe-eyed souls feel when we first enter college and get to discover who we are. Season 2, on the other hand, is focusing on maturity, actually dealing with our flaws, coping with the responsibilities and hardships of life, duty and obligation vs wants and need; the characters are older now, affected by the world's cruelties/situations and now have walls up higher than before.

And in order to help us get that vibe, even more, our couple's relationship is put through the wringer, hearts torn, misunderstandings prolonged unfairly, and everyone broken just staying in a state of pining, longing and anger, anger, at what was lost to them; the innocence/fun of falling in love, the guise of being in control, and the joy of being free and dumb in love. It isn't a surprise to see our main character, Shide and Shu Yi, see their flaws fleshed out more in the open and actually increased and exposed for us, the audience, to watch and dislike. Shu Yi's short temper becomes even more exposed as he struggles to have control over his past and feelings for Shide once they reunite, and Shide's withdrawal of emotions also becomes even more strained and put on focus as he also realises what he has lost. Both of them enter this sick twisted, and tense need for control and power that their relationship becomes intense and full of passion hidden behind the anger and resentment. So I'm going to break down the idea of Control and Power with these twos relationship, a certain theme that has been there since season 1, and why now it's something both rivals are struggling to obtain to win, especially Shuyi, who is determined this time to not be Mr 2nd when it comes to Shide again. Hence the title Fighting Mr 2nd.

Misunderstandings and Miscommunications

Let's first focus on the miscommunication/ separation at hand. This exposed so much already about how these two felt about the power they hold over the other. Let's first look at what season 1 exposed; for Shide, Shuyi has always had control over him since the moment his young self told him that he would be a companion to him whenever he was lonely. Shide has desperately loved Shuyi and did everything possible to ensure he kept Shuyi's focus on him no matter what. The way he decided to do this was to put himself in a place more powerful than Shuyi; he put himself always ahead of Shuyi, ensuring he was always number one no matter what. This was how he controlled the situation; for him, as long as Shuyi noticed him, he was happy to continue hoping for a change and also making him react. In Shide's mind, he never wanted to force/ make Shuyi fall for him because he didn't think it was possible. He just wanted to be by his side (as a 'friend') until graduation was over.This shows me already some stuff about their relationship. How Shide perceives Shuyi; one, he didn't trust in Shuyi's love as being as strong as he was. He even says it to Shuyi on the bridge when they confessed to each other. For him, Shuyi was always the 'lucky' one; the one in control, the real winner because he had him in his palm of his hand. Shuyi was the one who made him whipped, the one he chased after secretly for 8 years or more. Shuyi has always been the one with the hold over him. Immediately they got together, Shide also tells Shouyi his confusion but the happiness that Shuyi is also feeling the same towards him.

Shide can't believe the switch in Shuyi's personality and actions for him; Shuyi still tried to play of Shide's grand confessions of love in the last episode, and Shide was okay as long as Shuyi kept paying attention to him. But in my head, it showed that Shide didn't think Shuyi's love was as unconditional, as strong, as uncontrollable as his. He didn't know he had any hold over Shuyi. He thought it was his constant love and chase that won Shuyi in the end, so what happens when he thinks he pushed Shuyi away? In Shide's perspective, he's the one who slacked behind and pushed Shuyi away by disappearing for 5 years, which fair enough makes sense; Shuyi has every right to be angry at being ghosted. But Shide blames himself and thinks it's because his show of love was weakened and slowed down that it caused Shuyi to retreat and walk away easily. Because he wasn't fighting anymore for their love, he lost Shuyi's attention. Again this suggests how fickle he believes Shuyi's feelings are and how still in his head he believes he's the one with the long-lasting love/feelings.

Shide's personality is someone who likes to be in control (like Shuyi but for different ways and reasons); he's kind of had to always be; ever since his dad died, he's had to try and make it his goal to become stronger and better to take care of his mum, and to ensure they live well. This is connected to the theme of Duty and Obligation in the show. Even in Season 1, the reason he has to leave for America for a bit is to ensure his mum settles in nicely. Even after that, he's again the one responsible for ensuring whoever was sick in America was taken care of. It's because of his need to be responsible and be in control that Shuyi always feels distanced from him (mocked, misunderstood, and hurt). Shide is someone who likes to keep a calm demeanour. He likes to take things on by himself; he likes to not show when he's hurting or alone (apart from that one time as a kid where he broke down on Shuyi). In fact, it might be because Shuyi is the only one who did see him in his vulnerable state and gave him an aim to become stronger that made him cling on to his love for him and devote himself to his love for him. But in looking so in control of his emotions, Shuyi always saw Shide as someone who loved winning and making him feel like a fool. In season 1, he thought Shide did it on purpose to see him lose control and be a mess, and in season 2, he's resorted back to that thinking. Let's look at why?

No 1 for You (Shide’s pov) vs Fighting Mr 2nd (Shuyi’s pov)

Shuyi did not also understand the proper depth of Shide's feelings. I guess we should have seen it coming that he didn't fully understand how deep they were, he had heard ideas from Shide's mother, he had heard grand declarations from Shide (after he was the one to pry it out of him), but he didn't actually trust it fully. I think because he didn't fully trust both their sexualities and identities when it came to their feelings. Like I said, we should have seen it coming when he admits he doesn't want to fall for a guy, but also it's because it's Shide he's okay with being in love. However, people complained about this because in BL, we're tired of the I love you, not boys trajectory always chosen. However, it was more than that. I think because of what's embedded in people's minds at a young age (due to society), there might have also been, as a result of that, hints of internalised homophobia (IH) with Shuyi. And that's why it made sense for him to wither and assume that Shide truly would be with someone else and be married and have kids. Because of IH, Shuyi may have automatically thought it made sense that Shide would move on, get married and have kids in America (hence as he said in episode 1, he was disqualified by choice) because, in his head, he didn't understand Shide's love and devotion for him.

It also points to insecurity and fear that he might not be enough/the better option for Shide. One of his pet peeves was that he was always coming second to Shide, he was always being seen by himself as second best, and he probably also thought he had become the second-best option to Shide living a great 'fulfilled' life according to 'society' where he is married to a wife and has kids. This is why in the special episode, he also gives up easily and wishes him the best refusing to actually question why Shide would do this to him after all the stupid and grand promises he made a year ago before he left. Promises of marriage, promises of devotion, of being his family etc. Of course, this felt like Shuyi was thoroughly mocked and lowered because he had lost again to Shide by letting his heart trust him and wait for him. Now, in season 2, he's determined to not do that too. To not lose control of his heart ever again. To not fail to Shide in any way, shape or form ever again.

Shuyi; The Guise of Control

Shide is always acting on the surface like he's in control, causing Shuyi to always think he's more vulnerable and a fool, and it makes season 2 make more sense. Even if Shide says, he'll make Shuyi look at him again, how on earth is he meant to ever let that happen? He literally manipulated the situation in season 1 and got Shuyi's walls down only for him just to cheat on him, so how can Shuyi trust just his actions on the surface?

No matter how devoted Shide is looking, even at the end finally showing a hint of losing control under Shuyi's hold which Shuyi was not expecting because he thought Shide will always want to again be 'proper'. And in the past, it was Shuyi who always pushed for skinship once they started dating; Shide always again acted like he hadn't been affected; this was discussed actually in that final episode. Even if on the surface Shide looked affected, Shuyi wouldn't trust that. Because Shide is always holding back whilst Shuyi always feels like a fool, never being able to control himself around him, never being able to control his emotions or have a poker face around him. From the first episode in season 1, Shuyi has always been uncontrollable when it came to Shide, whilst Shide always came out looking cool.

Shuyi always ended up in the most vulnerable shameful state (forgetfully hurting himself in reaction to Shide's presence, being the one distracted and bothered by skinship in the last episode whilst Shide studied, or even being exposed and screaming down a bridge, his love for Shide to make Shide come out and say how he feels). Shuyi always ended up being weakened and frustrated because Shide seemed like he had everything in order. Shuyi is now adamant he's lying or that Shuyi is still the one who's more in love with him (his biggest fear). For example, the slap he gives to Shide (exposed his lack of control of emotions around Shide) and yet Shide immediately tried to control the situation, making Shuyi again look like the irrational one and the most affected one. Also, as mentioned it Shuyi (in Shuyi's head), who proceeded to force/get Shide to confess. Because Shide was too focused on controlling his environment, avoiding the situation, holding back his feelings, whilst Shuyi's emotions always get the best of him and caused him to still lose in front of Shide. Basically letting Shide get his way all the time. And by doing that, it was Shuyi who ended up waiting for a year and then being 'cheated' on, being ghosted with his heart shattered.

The Fear of Weakness and Vulnerability

Other examples are Shide going to Shuyi's house and ignoring him in his own home (again, Shuyi can't even control his environment when it comes to Shide, everything he owns feels little because Shide seems to have a hold over him in everything), and proceeding to make him the fried rice. Even as the vice president who's meant to be in control and be in charge of letting go of people (which his father is pressuring him to do, he has no choice in the matter), Shide is the CEO (a higher position) of the company and is adamant on convincing Shuyi to do no such thing. It's a big fear to Shuyi, which is why he's determined to ensure he does fire these people because if he doesn't, It means he's again coinciding underneath Shide's hold over him, over everything he has, including his heart.

The act of making fried rice in Shuyi's house as if nothing is going on, Shide ignoring his tantrums and outbursts does again what Shuyi hates, makes him feel stupid, weak and vulnerable. It makes him feel like he's losing again to Shide. This is why I think he really has no other option in his mind to win but to use emotions and feelings (what he can't control) as a weapon to capture Shide. By making Shide fall for him emotionally and then being the one to break his heart, that's how Shuyi thinks he'll finally be able to break down Shide's calm, façade that he's always in control, that's how he stops being Mr Second. Obviously, it's a stupid idea because Shuyi literally becomes weakened just by being in Shide's presence. To be anywhere intimate with him, he will only resort to his own emotions being, even more, harder to handle even if he tries to play it off as just attraction.

And for both of them, control is even harder physically with emotions because they've been 'starved' of each other's presence for 5 years, of each other's touch and connection. As shown in episode 1 of FMS, they're both in a state of pining, longing and waiting for one of them to give in. For 5 years, Shuyi was secretly fighting against the truth that he had been waiting for Shide to return even when he tried to focus all his energy and heart into hate and bitterness (to distract him from the pain of waiting). Shuyi never wanted to give up on hope, never wanted to let go of Shide, because it's out of his control to forget or move on. He couldn't do that even if he tried. This is why he also tries again to use a power play with a fake girlfriend that he couldn't remember the name for. Every single sentence he said was how he compared himself to the girl he thought Shide cheated on him with. He was saying it to hurt Shide, but in the end, he was still exposing his own hurt and insecurity about why he thought Shide left him.

Shide; Control Vs Sacrifice

Meanwhile, the audience all know that, on the other hand, Shide is the one who has no control over the matter. No matter what he seems like on the surface/ in front of Shuyi, Shide is completely tired, weak and frustrated once he sees Shuyi again. It's frustrating because the only time he shows his emotions is once Shuyi isn't looking; he cries only after Shuyi has left, always holding his feelings and only letting it out when he's by himself. Although to Shuyi, it seems he's in control, being the CEO, being the one who disappeared for 5 years, being the one who is successful and influential, Shuyi couldn't be more opposite in his thoughts. Shide has no control over the CEO position; it's not a job he chose for himself, it's not what he wanted to do, he did it because of again his responsibility to his mother and family. Shide isn't the one who chose to disappear for 5 years in America; he again had no control over the situation because someone else was ill, and he had to be the one to help his family again become stable. And lastly, Shide isn't successful and as influential as he's sold his company to Shuyi's father, so he actually isn't in control of his position, of his life essentially. What Shuyi sees as control is unfortunate because it's actually Shide's sacrifice; he's had to lose what he actually wants to be in that position. All he's ever wanted is Shuyi. Ironic no?

Even in Season 1, when he seemed to be the one controlling the situation, he wasn't; he always did everything to get Shuyi, and for 8 years him being 'in control/winner' as Shuyi puts it wasn't him winning because he always didn't get Shuyi's heart before he confessed. And that's what's so heartbreaking about Shuyi's misunderstanding of Shide; when he first sees Shide in the past in his memories, he doesn't know the moment Shide fell for him; he just sees Shide winning over him, he doesn't even notice the first person who had control over the other was him, because he already took Shide's heart, trust and devotion. This is why Shide told him he was the lucky one; he was the one who was winning, who was always in control. Not Shide.

Love and It’s Hold and Power

And again, although Shide is the one he thinks he's second-best to. Shuyi has a lot of power over everyone else since he was young. He's been a spoilt, rich boy who's had control over his friends (in a positive way like they felt they had to watch him and babysit him), he's had control due to his father's power, and he's had control now over Shide just due to again his father's job and his heritage. And I think that's why he can't stand the fact that no matter what he does when he's with Shide, he loses all of that power; he's reduced to wanting to do something for someone, like in season 1, washing the dishes, being humble, exposing his feelings to Shide so loudly and vulnerably. Shide is the only person who makes him want to do all that, and he hates it. It's why when the employees in episode 1 call him again Shide's girlfriend (even though literally Shide bending down to tie his laces is an act of losing control and him being in control of him), it bothers him because it makes him look weak. He's the one flustered by the actions; his heart is shaken by the movement. What he sees about Shide vs what's genuinely being shown/exposed is so opposite, so of course, they're more prone to misunderstandings because they've always both seen the situation very differently.

So WBL has always been using this theme of Control vs Power with Shide and Shuyi. And how, because of love, both of them feel this lack of control over each other. Mostly from season 1, when Shide gets closer to Shuyi using the idea of rivalry to see who can win over each other, even though he gives in always to Shuyi on purpose. Shuyi's misunderstanding has always been an issue since episode 1, since even when Shide kissed him in the pool. This time around in season 2, we get to deal with the actual seriousness/reciprocation of what that misunderstanding and fear of lack of control can do to them. And how others can manipulate that (Shuyi's father probably). Either way, these twos relationship has become angst central because Shuyi really is fighting Mr second, he's determined this time not to lose to Shide no matter what and he's finally using like the last way he can possibly gain control over Shide. His body. The most vulnerable part of a person is exposed when they sleep with someone else; by getting Shide to even want to give in to him as he requested, he can expose everything about Shide, his weakness, his heart, his truths. Hence, it makes sense the relationship is using attraction and chemistry as a powerful tool for the storyline. Shuyi isn't going to be able to even go through with anything because he's just as vulnerable and weak with Shide as Shide is with him.

I love angst, and I love power plays and fight for control in rivals to lovers stories. I love misunderstandings and requited, but they don't know the trope. I just really enjoy WBL, and I'm so excited to see what happens next. Looks like Shide is finally going to lose that façade he has on the surface once he breaks down under the influence of alcohol; probably, poor boy has been suffering so much. And I think both of them will soon need to gain control over their situation together so they can defeat the obstacles that come in the form of Shuyi's father, society, company issues etc. So yeh, I'm loving this, and it's such a breath of fresh air. Friday is too far away, sigh.

Hello! Do you think that one day, Deku's flaws will have consequences? You pointed out that Shigaraki always face consequences for them, so in your opinion, do you think the manga could lead to something more equal on this? I know he is the Hero and all, but wouldn't it undermind the whole thing if in the end he just ignores the society's problems by just pushing heroism as the miracle solution?

Good question, anon. Let’s take a more serious look at Deku’s flaws. Deku so far has two main flaws.

Self-Harming - Deku has consistently valued himself less than others. His way of saving others almost always includes breaking his own body, and when you consider how low Deku’s self esteem is and how he was constantly told he would never be good enough to be a hero growing up this pattern of behavior borders on self-harming.

Hero Worship - Deku doesn’t question anything about hero society, which makes him incredibly naive and unaware of what’s going on in the world around him. Deku hasn’t done anything yet to seperate himself from being just another All Might Wannabe. Deku wants to save people, but doesn’t really even know what saving people means.

Deku doesn’t care if he gets hurt, and Deku doesn’t sympathize with villains, even ones who have sympathetic reasons for their actions, and this has led to Deku running off without thinking to try to fight Shigaraki to the death.

1. Self Harm

So one possible interpretation of Deku’s habits of breaking his body when trying to save people is that he’s internalized the idea that without a quirk, he can’t become a hero. Everything that other people including bullies like Bakugo told him when he was younger, that he’s worthless because he was born quirkless, that he can’t become a hero, over and over again is still inside of him.

Even what All Might tells him at first is a repettition of this idea. Deku can only be a hero if he’s strong. What’s most important to becoming a hero is strength, and having a strong quirk. Even though All Might eventually opens up the path for Deku being a hero, he only lets him after he proves his strength. Deku has to reach a certain power threshold before he’s even allowed to be at the starting lines.

Every single character in class UA is hardworking, but Deku is especially characterized as being OBSESSED with training, and also being the one who pushes himself to such extremes that his body is constantly on the verge of breaking.

Deku as a character is constantly told how worthless he is, because he wasn’t born with a quirk, because he’s borrowing someone else’s power, because he didn’t deserve to succeed All Might. Deku’s response to this has always been to try to prove his worth by pushing himself.

Deku’s very unhealthy idea of what a hero is, also resembles what All Might told him in the first chapter. That heroes have to risk their lives in incredibly risky ways like this in order to walk the walk. Deku has always worshipped All Might’s way of always sacrificing himself without realizing what absolute havoc All Might wreaked on ihs body.

Deku’s habit of breaking himself has shown to have had some consequences so far. It made his mom cry. He was warned that he would do permanent damage to his left arm if he ever suffered a serious break like that again and would even eventually lose it. There’s also All Might’s early forced retirement which happened because he kept on going when everyone told him to stop, which is a possible future for Deku if he doesn’t seriously change his ways. However, there is no lasting consequence yet.

Another thing that’s important about Deku’s character is that he wants to be a hero so badly, and yet doesn’t really seem to know what kind of hero he wants to be.

Deku so far has imitated All Might in a very empty way, without ever thinking that the heroes he loves so much might be flawed, or really understanding how many mistakes All Might made. His hero worship blinds him to the hero’s flaws, and when he’s confronted with All Might’s mistakes he’s often completely blindsided.

All Might keeps secrets from him pretty regularly, and Deku just doesn’t question him because he’s just so busy in his hero worship. Due to that a lot of Deku’s progression as a character has stagnated. Even his idea of what a hero is, is extremely vague at best.

Deku says he wants to be the greatest hero who saves everyone. Much like Mirio who wanted to be a hero who saved a million people. However, what does that mean? How is Deku going to surpass All Might. He hasn’t really thought about these things yet, or what kind of hero he’s going to be.

Because Deku can’t see the flaws in the hero system he can’t really be better than the previous generation of heroes.

2. Self Destruction

Deku has a critical lack of self awareness. His goal is to save everyone, but he doesn’t really think of what that means. Aren’t villains in need of saving too? This relates back to the Dabi quote.

Who is it that really needs saving?

Villains need to be stopped, but what creates those villains?

Deku��s sympathies always lie with the pro-heroes but he’s so wrapped up in hero worship he doesn’t really think about their actions. Remember, Deku’s last big fight against this was against Chisaki a child abuser to protect Eri, an abused child.

Eri doesn’t just resemble Shigaraki. Eri is Shigaraki. They’re both children who were kidnapped by crimelords when they were young, told that they were monsters because of their quirks, and then experimented on. Shigaraki can’t consent to being experimented on because he was kidnapped since he was five and groomed all along with the intent that one day he would have this surgery performed on him so he could inherit AFO.

Ujiko commits horrible grievous experimentation on Shigaraki, and then says he’s doing this all for Shigaraki’s sake, that he’s given him everything. He’s supposed to sound like an abusive parent here.

So this time rather than fighting to save Eri, Deku is fighting against Eri’s foil, but all grown up, with about zero self awareness. What allowed Deku to win in the fight against Chisaki was his ability to see the good in Eri, and fight against Chisaki’s insistence that she was a monster because she was born with a dangerous quirk. He humanized Eri.

But, his response to Shigaraki is consistent dehumanization. Deku fought against Chisaki’s dehumanization of Eri, but is on the side of people who say things like this about Shigaraki.

It’s once again this blind loyalty and inability to question what we see is an extremely flawed system. Who is it in this situation that really needs saving? Endeavor? Gran Torino?

Gran Torino is partially at fault for the creation of Shigaraki, because if he had stopped Nana Shimura from abandoning her son, or even checked up on Koutarou and Tenko just once this entire situation could have been avoided.

It all goes back to Dabi’s question. Who is the one who needs saving here?

The biggest victims of the hero system, the ones most in need of saving are the villains, but Deku can’t see that, so he can’t really do anything to help them right now.

And yes. Deku should save Shigaraki. That’s the point of their foiling. They’re both Jungian Shadows of each other.

In Jungian psychology, the shadow, (also known as id, shadow aspect, or shadow archetype) is either an unconscious aspect of the personality that the conscious ego does not identify in itself; or the entirety of the unconscious, i.e., everything of which a person is not fully conscious. In short, the shadow is the unknown side.

Shigaraki is Deku’s foil and opposite, but they’re also like... the exact same dude.

The fact that Shigaraki started in the same place as Deku, that what he really needed was for someone to tell him that he could be a hero too, isn’t just there to be sad and tragic. It means that deep down, Shigaraki still wants someone to tell him he can be a hero, to show him another path other than being a villain, the same way All Might once told Deku he could be a hero.

The shadow is a part of yourself. The shadow is who you are deep down inside. That’s why a shadow can’t be killed. It’s the same thing as self destruction.

A shadow has to be reconciled. Part of self improvement is just learning to accept and look at the worst parts of yourselves in order to move on from them. You don’t get better by denying or remaining ignorant of the problem. Deku has consistently refused to even acknowledge Shigaraki.

Deku has said I can never understand you, we’re nothing alike, and yet we as the audience know they’re like the exact same guy. There’s no point in setting up such a parallel unless it’s going to be paid off in some way.

Deku’s not trying to accept his shadow though, he’s fighting with everything he has to destroy his shadow, and that shouldn’t work.

Metaphorically.

It’s like Deku is trying to destroy himself. Which as I’ve said above Deku has a tendency to be self destructive. Star Wars doesn’t end with Luke killing Darth Vader, it ends with Luke reconciling with Anakin his father.

Deku is warned several times in the last chapter not to charge straight ahead at Shigaraki, not to fight him on his own. We even see Bakugo in the flashback talk about how Deku doesn’t consider himself in the equation, or think about protecting himself at all which is why he destroys his own body so much.

So, if even Bakugo is like Deku you’re going to get yourself killed, and every adult around him is yelling at Deku to run away because he might get himself killed, and Deku himself thinks. I don’t care what happens to me I’m going to destroy Shigaraki no matter what. Then, there should be a conseqeunce here.

Because this. This is self destruction. Deku’s trying to kill the guy that is... literally just him.

In other words if everybody if yelling Deku don’t do the thing. And then Deku just, does the thing anyway. There should be a consequence! Deku’s goal isn’t to destroy Shigaraki, or to kill him to put a stop to him, it’s reconciliation with his jungian shadow. It should be to become the hero who saves everyone, by telling Shigaraki the words he wanted to hear for a long time that he can be a hero too. FInally passing on the words All Might gave him to someone else, and making up for the previous generation’s mistakes with Shigaraki.

So, not only is Deku attempting to do the wrong thing. He’s also fighting in the wrong way (by hurting himself again).

Which means, Deku probably shouldn’t win this fight. A good consequence would be Deku losing here, even with the last minute power up, and breaking his entire body trying to defeat Shigaraki.

Characters are most interesting when they fail, and Deku should fail here.
