Arslan Senki Reread
Tumblr media
Arslan is such a good bean. If he did have the raw power backing him to railroad the conflict into a mediation, I wonder what the result would've been.
I think it's more than just Arslan lacking the power, I don't see Andragoras and Hilmes accepting to lay their hands away from each other. Worst case scenario, Arslan dies in the middle anyways bc Assassination™. Both Narsus and Daryun are right here, Arslan himself lacks power, but also at this point neither Hilmes nor Andragoras are capable of backing off.
Tumblr media
Farangis' dialogue here is making me feel things, dammit. Do what you can. Do what's in your power. (It's very relevant to my Wolfpack AU.)
Tumblr media
Farangis comforting/gently advising Arslan, and then steps up to keep the project on track. She makes for a good sister-mentor figure. I love Narsus and Farangis' dynamic, her atrocious love advice aside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I see Alfarīd as someone who ultimately values life, who fights for life even as she is a bandit. Perhaps even because she is a bandit. Rather than having your life be snuffed out for/by an ungrateful liege or king (the Zott laugh at both country and king, they answer to no one but their own, as Merlaine said) so Estelle's stubborn loyalty must baffle her a lot. It's alien to her. (Arslan is different, he's a friend, as she says.) Rather than dying for the convenience of the ruling class who would never appreciate them, perhaps to her, staying alive in spite of their best efforts to snuff them out is a form of resistance. So she doesn't understand why, why Estelle is so willing to lay their life down for a tyrannical, genocidal maniac.
Tumblr media
The head jars.
Why yes, I cropped out the Bastard's face because I'm petty if nothing else.
Tumblr media
The sorcerers evading death from a blow that would've, should've, killed a human being.
Tumblr media
Saam is shaken. This is the first he's hearing of it, and he fears what this implies. What this implies for Hilmes. What's going on? What does he mean by benefactor? How is his prince tied to these unnatural beings? This can mean nothing good.
Tumblr media
Saam's speech bubble trembles with fear for Hilmes. And Hilmes, oh Hilmes, the red flags are so vivid they're a sea of blaring neon signs now. Nay, they're neon billboards. You say so yourself, the sorcerer here is doing something morally repugnant. Open your fucking eyes, this ain't good!
Also, does Hilmes' hair seem quite long here?
Tumblr media
Ohhh fuck you. Fuck you fuck you all the way to hell and never back. Saam was trying to protect Hilmes. And there's just something that hits so hard about that last panel. “Please believe me.” We know it wasn't Saam who said it out loud, of course, but the backdrop being a pitch black with no speaker, taken out of context it sounds like a plea and y'know, I'll bet Saam was pleading for Hilmes' faith in the deeps of his mind even if he doesn't speak it aloud. A tug-o-war, each needing Hilmes to believe in him.
I want to punt Hilmes in the sun for which side he chooses here.

I was rummaging through your archives in search of smth (don't worry, I'm sure I'll find it) and in the replies of one of the posts I was rereading, I saw that you asked if Marda clan mages could sense each other! (It was one of those horrid days where I was very tired but couldn't sleep so I unfortunately missed the question, OOPS) And the answer is, I think they can! The closer they're to someone the easier they can sense each other, maybe, I don't really have the words for it but when you get really familiar with someone, you remember the “feel” of their magic, if that makes sense?
I took a while to get to this, so I trust you managed to find what you were looking for? I suspected that might be the answer and I think it makes sense that magic would be tangible and recognisable as distinct to a user, especially if there's closeness between them. And oh, this is horrible, but while answering this ask I just had the thought that if they can sense each other / each other's magic like this then they must also be able to sense when it stops. As in, when one of them dies. A sudden absence that can only mean one thing, whether it happens in the heat of battle or just on an ordinary day with no warning. Filing this under thoughts I don't want to follow too far because I am already wounding myself with them.
And now for the obligatory Team Zahhak tangent. It's canon that the mages have like... a really vile aura that can be sensed, at least by some, when they are nearby. Your ask reminded me of my headcanon that Zandeh not only becomes accustomed to it but can pick out when it's Gurgin rather than any of the other sorcerers (I guess this one was based on anime canon where their involvement with Team Hilmes was more open but it I think it works in any context in the sense of 'evil presence' becoming 'Gurgin!'. And while he might have got used to the feel of Gurgin, the others probably still register as 'wrong / unsettling').
(Meanwhile, for Wolfsnake AU which really needs a better name, Isfan always registers Gurgin as a threat, especially when he sneaks up or appears without warning as he is prone to doing, but, well, emotions can cloud your judgement, and that feeling is at odds with his belief that Gurgin is a comrade and not an enemy. Of course, eventually he'll find out that he should have just trusted his instincts.)

if even a year ago kem would have known his life would have turned out like this, he’d have laughed. there’s simply no way. good things just didn’t happen to him; it was something he eventually came to terms with. there was no luck in his life, no light in the darkness of the grave he’d called one. though somehow kem has left that grave with a second chance, an opportunity to leave all that behind and move forward. he was so used to standing still, complacent in the nothing that was his life.
before, there wasn’t much to bring a smile to his lips, rarely would he be looking forward to the days he’d have to get through. but now he finds himself rarely without a softness in his gaze, like everything is vanilla scented, and there’s a warmth in the air that he’s not sure he could go without anymore. it’s not so much italy, or the fact he got out, but more that he’s done so with her. that this isn’t just his life, but theirs.
it’s as soon as his eyes land upon his wife that his smile will push up at his cheeks. he’ll discard the bouquet he’d bought on the kitchen table, instead his focus on just wanting to greet her.  every day he’s grateful to come home to her, to be able to wrap his arms around her and pull her close to him. he’ll leave a kiss gently on her neck, hugging her closely from behind. “ mrs. sinclair-arslan... ” kem will whisper near her ear, another kiss against her skin. “ i missed you. ”

From my experiences, it is really hard to translate the average Japanese novel into English and have it read well. Japanese lacks a lot of the conventions that would be considered “good” writing in English, so direct translations of Japanese novels can often come off as more juvenile than they would read in the original Japanese. The most obviously example of this is the lack of dialogue tags. Because Japanese is a very context-sensitive language, dialogue tags aren’t necessary for understanding an exchange. Really poor translations of Japanese novels will leave these exchanges as they appear without dialogue tags, which can lead to confusing or boring conversations between characters.
This isn’t a hard thing to fix, translators simply add dialogue tags themselves, but many choose not to for the sake of having a “direct” translation, which leads to a subpar reading experience in English. Translating a novel is not the same as translating manga or anime. It requires so much more effort to get decent prose in English. One of my favorite ways a novel has been translated is The Heroic Legend of Arslan fan translation, which I’ve mentioned before. Yoshiki Tanaka’s masterpiece series of novels is not only written in Japanese, but is also set in an alternate reality Persian setting. The translator had lots of notes at the ends of translated sections about the process they went through to make it sound good in English while making it sound true to a Persian fantasy setting. It’s really impressive and shows how much work goes in to a good novel translation, especially one with fantasy elements.

So, here's something i feel rather funny about: for all my various faults with the show, RW/BY really tended to have solid action more often than not. I mean, not at all surprising in the first few volumes, because Monty Oum was a genius with combat scenes, but even after his unfortunate passing, I think the show could genuinely pull off excellent fight scenes when it put in the effort. If you'd ask anyone I've spoken to about fights, I'll easily admit that Volume 4's Qrow vs. Tyrian is one of my favorite fights in the whole dang show; and I do think that there's some decently solid action in Volume 6 and beyond, despite my general reticence with the series after Volume 6.
But I think many could probably agree that Volume 3 was one of the apexes of RW/BY, and that did tend to include fight scenes. The fights were pretty well animated and dynamic, we were graced by the excellent Qrow vs. Winter, the Mercury effect was in full throttle for his fights... it was just as memorable of a season for the battles as for anything else.
... but it didn't have it all handled there, which is where we get to my Nitpick November today: A lot of the Vytal Festival Tournament's 4 vs. 4 matches were pretty weak.
Of course, we all recall the inaugural fight of the season, RW/BY vs. ABRN! There was some pretty solid teamwork in effect on both sides, Reese had a pretty okay bout with Blake that had some degree of clever fighting on both sides of their fight, and Arslan was definitely the toughtest of her team and doing the best. Even after Reese was out, how would our heroines take out the remaining trio?
Tumblr media
Oh... Yang's just going to punch all of them once as the one hit in a big combo move, and that's enough to defeat all of them.
Well, that's fine, I guess! There was a whole lot of buildup from RW/BY's side, had Yang side on a ice ramp to build up speed and get extra speed from Blake swinging her at the team, so it was a pretty big hit! Okay, what's next?
Alright, Team JNPR vs. BRNZ! We saw that JNPR was pretty on par with RW/BY back in Volume 2 during their food fight, Jaune had been noticeably improving during the past Volume, and Pyrrha was being hyped ever since the first Volume as of of the best fighters in her age group. Maybe we'd get to see Jaune barely squeeze in a win against one of them as a sign of his progress, or Ren and Nora tag team to show they've got synergy as teammates, or maybe Pyrrha will show off her skills by taking out two of BRNZ at once! Let's see how this goes!
Tumblr media
O-oh... they're going to make a painfully long joke about them arguing about tactics in the middle of a fight, and then it's Nora - not, y'know, real standout of her year Pyrrha- who takes them all out in one attack. And she just hits all of BRNZ at once with one swing, too...
Well, now we've got SSSN vs NDGO! For some of us fans, this is what we've been waiting for! Finally, we get to see Sage and Scarlet in action, we've been seeing them in the openings for two whole Volumes! Let's see SSSN show us what they're made of!
Oh, uh, Sage gets sent flying out of the ring in seconds of the fight beginning? Well, that's okay, Scarlet's staying in, Sun just brought it down to 3 vs. 3! Their teamwork isn't exactly great, but Scarlet's doing a good job fighting the girls coming after him! ... oh no, wait, he gets taken out by an attack Sun did getting redirected into him. Well, that's okay, I mean, Sun and Neptune are close friends, right! Surely they'll pull off a cool win together to show their teamwork!
Tumblr media
Oh, wait, no... Neptune is just gonna stick his electrical trident in the water and take out all the girls in... *sigh* one singular attack.
Yeah, Volume 3 just did not do the 4 vs. 4 fights well at all. Like, there's this whole emphasis on teamwork in the show, and we've seen these characters work well together as a team, so there's so much potential for cool fights where we see what they're all capable of... but the fights we do get are pretty small bouts where the opponents honestly spend more time working as a team than our heroes do, and because they couldn't think of a better way to end the fight, they just contrive a way for them to win the fight in one big hit.
It was an annoying trend for Volume 3's opening fights, and really got it started on a weak foot. At least when it got to the 2 vs. 2 fights and beyond, the fights got better and the endings to those fights more dynamic, but man...

Arslan Senki Reread
Tumblr media
Nice to see their blows impacting them. And damn, Andragoras' knee could be felt even through metal armor? He's terrifying.
Tumblr media
HA, MY PRIMARY GUESS WAS RIGHT. The sorcerers either left or were removed when Osroes took the throne!
Tumblr media
Hilmes is just. Out of the loop a lot of the times, huh? He doesn't know a lot of things, especially in the novels part 2, where he didn't even know of Zahhak's return nor any of the magical bullshit taking place during that time.
Tumblr media
How'd he— okay, forget everything else, what's that fucking sword made of that it didn't snap in half or even crack??????????????
Tumblr media
I don't think Zandeh would buy that at all, Hilmes.
Actually, what does Zandeh think of this at all???
Tumblr media
What's going on with this panel. Why is there text here. “My older...”??????
Tumblr media
They're shookie like a cookie.
Man, what a thing to hear.
Tumblr media
The eyes on the woman are really unsettling me. Yikes.
Tumblr media
And now Zahhak takes the stage. We're getting a new chapter this month, right? Oh god I'm so anxious 😭😭😭
And fellas friends and fiends, with this we officially have caught up with the manga! The Arslan Senki Reread project is officially done... this round, at least. I'm sure I'll be rereading this manga again and again, though whether or not I make another round of posts is another matter. Maybe I'll just post little random panels when I feel like it. I feel like for now I've exhausted my thoughts and what I want to say in this round.
Until I start another reread round, this reread tag and project has come to an end!
This was quite the journey. I hope y'all enjoyed this as much as I did.
If y'all wanna see other posts under this tag:
Reverse chronological tag (works on the web as well as the app)

I didn't talk about it all that much but for you Arslan fans checking in occasionally, this piece is only the first of four!
So. It will be a long project. ^__^
I didn't want to flood the tag with it since I'm doing weekly updates. But as they get more recognizable I will tag them properly. Or, I'll just tag them every once in a while. I'll see how it goes.

Do you feel there is credibility to the claim that RWBY suffers from “Cast Bloat?” If yes or no, why?
Not at all. This complaint stems from two things:
People who can't grasp the idea of minor characters, characters who play a small role in the overall story. They might be significant only for one arc, or just background characters; either way, the story doesn't and doesn't need to focus on these characters.
People who complain that the show isn't about the characters they want it to be about. Plenty of characters get development throughout the show, from the main ensemble to some side characters like Raven Branwen and the Ace-Ops. Such people are just pissed off that the story doesn't instead focus only on characters they want it to, typically male characters (or extremely minor female characters, because the HTDM despises any female character once they get actual character development).
Naturally, the perfect example of what RWBY would be if it had "cast bloat" issues is...RWBY "critic" rewrites, because they're obsessed with dragging up every minor character their creators adore and shoving them all to the forefront of the story, whether it be an inclusion that's entirely inconsequential (such as Arslan randomly being the niece of Leonardo Lionheart—and also a massive asshole), a random character being treated as more important and capable than the main cast themselves (i.e. Cardin Winchester getting to fight off Adam while Team RWBY are painted as helpless against him), or characters being completely rewritten into whatever the creator wants them to be, however unfitting (Celtic Phoenix's cultural-appropriation going-commando daughteru!Vernal).
RWBY's numerous characters help to develop the story and setting of the series, by giving us new perspectives into the places our protagonists visit. Some characters end up tagging along with our heroes for a portion of their journey; others end up continuing their own lives once their plotlines are resolved. That some people don't like it when some white male character doesn't get the screentime and development they think he deserves* or that some new character is involved with a new storyline doesn't mean that the series has a "cast bloat" problem.
*I wish I was joking, but this is actually what Cardin stans believe. White male entitlement, even for white males WHO DON'T EVEN EXIST.
