Umireread: Legend of the Golden Witch - Chapter 6: Sandy Beach

The following contains spoilers for the entirety of Umineko. Please do not read if you are yet to finish it.

We finally have our first real entry to the Tips menu in the form of the Epitaph, but it’s just a copy of what it says without any further notes. Going forward I’ll just comment if something is added that I think merits inspection, other than starting each post with “no new tips this time” or “there’s something new but there’s nothing to say about it”.

I mean, I have to make the joke about Maria being the one writing the Tips, right? We get the Epitaph in our “book” and then she pulls it out of hers. Anyway Maria writes all the tips 100% canon confirmed

Battler says he’s hungry and Yasu immediately goes into “I would do anything in the world for you” mode.

Umineko is just full of microcosms of itself, isn’t it? This whole scene of the kids discussing the Epitaph is just one giant metaphor to the narrative structure of the mystery as a whole. The Epitaph tells you about a sweetfish-filled river, so you take it as the truth. You try to figure out where it is, but it’s fruitless, because it doesn’t exist. The same applies to all the testimonies and text that dances around the red truths later - if you take it at face value, you’ll find yourself in a dead end. It’s only when you take a step back and realise what the words actually mean that you arrive at your actual truth.

Absolutely WILD take. You’d really think Maria would be big into the fantasy motifs associated with castles. That being said, this probably does track - Maria has probably been on days out to actual castles and, as a kid, found them relatively mundane and boring. Under the lens of reality, theme parks are indeed the more whimsical of the two, and probably easier for her to lose herself in fantasy-wise.

Hitting the nail on the head there by focusing on the Kanji of the Epitaph being important, eh?

Yeah this was just me at every family meeting when I was her age.

Battler cutting the Gordian Knot here. This is a really interesting line, honestly - it’s a sense of pragmatic bluntness that I don’t recall us getting a lot of later (although that might just be my memory), but moreover, it shows a sense of gunning for answers without caring for the why. It’s definitely a far cry from Erika levels of depravity, but it’s neat to know how much he grows as a person as this story goes on.

I do wonder what Yasu’s thoughts are regarding this discussion. I know she’s rooting for Battler - or anyone, really - to solve the Epitaph, but I’d loved to have seen a beat-by-beat reaction of her internal thoughts to everything going on here.

Maria talks about wanting to believe in Beato and Yasu chimes in immediately. Feed that imagination and you can use her to your advantage later.

Good to know that we’re establishing the servants being willing to lie in service of fantasy this early on.

Battler goes “woah, that’s scary” and then Yasu immediately retreats and goes “nooo it’s not that scary please like me”.

I’m imagining a conversation where Maria asks Rosa for a book for her birthday, a happy Rosa asks her which one she would like, and then Maria goes “The Lemegeton :)”

I dunno man, I used to cast fire strike on scorpions at the Al Kharid mine to train my magic and they didn’t put up much resistance.

I’m imagining an alternate universe where the Rokkenjima Massacre never happens and Maria grows up as one of those girls obsessed with Star Signs and Crystals.

“Even I don’t think of myself as the sort of loser who’d laugh at something like that”. Oh Ryukishi is coming for the throat of anyone who makes fun of other peoples’ interests. I think this is quite a neat comment to drop - like, internally, part of me wants to say that he’s painting with too broad a stroke here, but at the same time I don’t think he’s wrong at all? Like, using the above example of people obsessed with astrological signs, it’s pretty common to see others poking fun at them because obviously it’s not real. But is that a valid reason to disparage them? Aren’t we all retreating into our own personal fantasies of reality, especially when it comes to more existential topics? Umineko, at its core, really is a story of compassion for your fellow man. I think this is quite a direct point for the story to make, but it’s a well warranted one.

Yasu, once again, is writing Battler as the ultimate gentleman dreamboat who would be her perfect partner.

This scene is quite interesting in that it gives you a good insight into the philosophy of the trio here - Battler, results focused, is initially disappointed that the roses will be battered by the storm. Jessica chimes in, saying that they were lucky to have lived and left an impression on them, and George echoes this by saying that the finite nature of their existence is what truly allows you to admire them in their bloom - with Battler coming around to their way of thinking afterwards. I like seeing Battler being so open minded, but I also like thinking of this as a reflection of all of their thoughts about life in general.

Oh that’s a scathing comment from Jessica. Literally one scene ago we had a callout directed towards people for looking down on what brings others joy, and now we have Jessica calling Maria’s obsession “pointless”. That has to be an intentional criticism of her character.

Mother of the year incoming.

The themes of fantasy and reality rise once again. Of course, the rose is gone - presumably it was pruned by Yasu to get Maria into this situation - but none of what the cousins or Rosa is saying here actually helps Maria. You can’t help her with the truth, you can only upset her. So do you force the truth down her throat? Do you make her even more upset, so you can feel vindicated that you’re right? Or do you approach her in a way that might actually calm her down? To be fair, I’m not entirely sure what the right approach would even be in this scenario - I’d presume the best bet is to weave some fantastical tale that the rose ran away somewhere, or that it wasn’t wilting and was actually getting ready to hide before the typhoon hit, so it’s actually safe and sound under the dirt. But anyway, I certainly know what the wrong approach is in this case!

Yasu writes the Ushiromiyas as completely rotten, who cannot be changed and aren’t worth saving. “But Battler, my hero? He’s different. He’s the good one.”

Once again, Umineko is such a good dive into the human condition. I’m almost certain that Rosa and Maria are based on a real case he saw during his time as a social worker. Rosa is a terrible mother, but you can see why she’s ended up like this. Not just because she’s issuing the same treatment Kinzo gave to her generationally, but because she’s a single mother who is not able to cope with Maria’s additional needs and struggles by herself. Her actions aren’t excused - and they certainly aren’t excusable - but you clearly understand why Rosa is like this. I’m so grateful whenever a piece of media is able to navigate a difficult topic like this with an understanding of the humanity behind both parties without just taking the easy route and vilifying one of them.

Wow, George is so great with kids! Anyway, let’s defend the mother who is beating her daughter.

It’s actually really messed up that both George and Jessica are so defensive of Rosa’s actions here. The generational trauma is real - they’ve both absolutely received similar treatment growing up and have become numb to it.

Yeah? You think what Maria wants the most right now is to be left alone? Bet you feel real good about yourselves letting that 9 year old get a beating, huh?

Through the lens of Yasu’s writing, I can’t help but see this as a venting moment - a reflection of the times that she was hurting, that she wanted someone to reach out to her, but it was too proper for them to do so and so a blind eye was turned against her. After all, it’s the Ushiromiya family, their entire tattered history is full of them simply ignoring their problems and waiting for them to go away. No doubt Yasu was frothing at the bit at the prospect of them trying to “wait for the problem to go away” while standing on top of several tons of military grade explosives.

It’s worth mentioning that I’m writing these notes as I go, because occasionally I’ll make a comment and then be pleasantly surprised by seeing a point I make be immediately reinforced by the narrative. Case in point, we have some discussion from Battler about how messed up it is for George and Jessica to act as they do in this scene.

Honestly, I want to revisit a suggestion I made earlier about Maria implanting herself onto the rose - if we read this scene with that assumption, this all hits so, so much harder. The wilted rose, the odd one out, has disappeared - and no-one seems to care. And here we have Rosa basically confirming that’s a one-to-one reflection of Maria’s school life; a wilted rose that people tolerate at best, want to see gone at worst, and the odd one out without any friends regardless. It’s just sad all round.

Also, Fortitude is the perfect pick for this scene - such a great track. Flawlessly captures the emotions at play here.

And we find ourselves in a Kinzo scene to send us out. With no witnesses in the study, this is the fantasy of an empty room. The sound of rain against the window with no-one there to care. A study draped in isolation and silence, all alone. It is left to the reader to decide what is lonelier - this vista of emptiness, or the abused child in the rose garden.

The person who mentioned virgo as a sign they can see oc as i totally agree but i can see virgo being their venus sign. There’s a couple virgos in my life, my bestest and longest friend is a virgo sun, my mom and older cousin are virgo moons and two people i adore most in this world that i’d consider family are virgo venuses(can you tell i’m abit of an astro nerd) and from being around them, listening to them and just experiencing them, my analysis is that they are genuine and extremely childlike but more so in a youthful tone not an immature one.

Virgo is ruled by the planet Mercury along with Gemini so they can be just as playful and witty and spontaneous! They want to explore and experience the world and hate the idea of limiting their spirit, but at the same time love is always in their back burner just waiting to be lit up. There’s this purity about them which is why it hurts so much to see them hurt. They do genuinely care for others and take the needs and feelings of others into consideration before they ever choose themselves which is why it takes alot for them to walk away from situations where they are being mistreated.

People tend to associate virgo with just being kind of apathetic and judgy or a neat freak, organized and very specific and picky with certain things and with people but they’re far more complex than that. They sacrifice a lot for those they love and are so thoughtful and nurturing through their actions more than anything. And while they will pamper and baby you, they’ll also hit you with a dose of truth because they want what’s best for you. I’ve always called Virgo an earthy version of cancers because they are so so so sooo compassionate and really adorable sweethearts. Although they outwardly seek passion and affection and good times in their love escapades, deep down they seek strong commitment, reliability and time with people they hold dear.

Though i will say virgo venuses aren’t really straight shooters when it comes to pursuing love so i think oc may have a fire mars in their chart that makes them so spicy and bold when it comes to being flirty and straightforward with what they want lool … butttt still virgos do tend to play shy when 9/10 it’s really a gagg and their real, plethora of other personalities are kinky, reckless, sad, passionate, affectionate, tension filled, rebellious n trauma all in one lmaooo. They’re still the cutest and so endearing and intriguing, you just want to know more

if i were to "diagnose" oc lool, i’d say they’re a cancer sun, maybe pisces moon, leo mercury, virgo venus and leo mars(i’m in between this and sag but also scorpio because they do tend to be bold n upfront too lol) with a gemini rising 😁

I know sometimes I get really into occult topics, because I like the culture of it--the idea of it. I love gothic vibes, I love learning the reasons these sort of dark spiritualism practices emerge and how they evolve. Mysticism and psychics and practical magic are all fascinating to me.

But sometimes I think people misunderstand my enthusiasm for support. I don't think most of, if any, of these practices should be done or really even believed in. Just because I think tarot reading and astrology are neat, does not mean I condone their sincere practice (especially for money).

So, when I write a book (fiction or RPG manual/compendium) about magic, blood rites, psychic abilities, etc. I do not condone their actual genuine and sincere practice. I do believe that anyone who tells you that they have any sort of genuine supernatural ability is lying, either to you or themselves, and they should not be encouraged to continue claiming that they have such abilities. Generally, people that make these claims prey on the desperate and ignorant to make money. And that is not okay.

I do not mind the insincere practice of many things, provided that it does not cause physical or emotional harm. I learned how to read tarot in high school and have done readings for a handful of people, but only explicitly as a performance. I have learned (and admittedly attempted) some darker things that I won't go into, but never with the belief that it would work and I have never claimed that I believe these kinds of supernatural phenomena are real. They are a fiction, fantasy, a performance, and only suitable as entertainment when the expression of them is as entertainment and nothing more.

I am frustrated that I have to make this information and opinion clear.

Thinking about how Elden Ring serves as a Spiritual Successor to a Certain Fantasy Series

I find fascinating the lore ouroboros from reading Elden Ring in context of the Wheel of Time and vice versa. Significant spoilers ahead for Elden Ring and minor spoilers for Wheel of Time.

There's the surface level stuff like:

The Erdtree Guardians wield sword-spears and are guarding offshoots of the Tree of Life like the Aiel with Avendesora? Neat!

The previous Elden Lord fought with an axe and was succeeded by an Elden Lord who fights with a hammer and runs with wolves? Sounds a lot like the character arc of Perrin Aybarra. The Beastman of Farum Azula in Limgrave could even be a wolf brother who was "lost to the wolf"

Interesting choice to have a Commander Niall at Castle Sol, considering that Wheel of Time has Pedron Niall, the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light. A villain who thinks that his cause is righteous. This has...implications...considering Miquella's connection to Castle Sol...

It gets more pointedly specific:

Raya Lucaria academy being located in a anatomically shaped body of water and governed by a woman sounds pretty similar to Tar Valon. But maybe it's just a trick of my eyes that the lake looks like an anatomical heart with the roadways and landmasses located at the major veins and arteries (I've sketched this out and it seems legit - it's an uncommonly seen angle of the heart though)

Radagon's name can be rearranged to "a dragon", is red-haired like Rand al'Thor, and his personal rune is a loose rendering of a woven Pattern - one of the central motifs of Wheel of Time. That seems a little beyond simple homage by GRRM to the works of a fellow author who he was well acquainted with (a nod from one book in A Song of Ice and Fire: "Archmaester Rigney wrote that history is a wheel, that the nature of man is fundamentally immutable. According to him, what has already happened will happen again, without remedy.").

So, what can Elden Ring be saying about Wheel of Time, a series that infamously has lingering questions that will never be answered due to literal death of the author.

There's a statue of a bearded man in the underground areas with a tablet at his feet that depicts the Imago Mundi - a real world artefact that is a map of Mesopotamia. This is implied to be the earliest age of civilization in Elden Ring just as real world civilization emerged from the river basin between the Tigres and Euphrates Rivers. This is where the ouroboros wraps back around to realizing that there may be some symbolism in Wheel of Time beginning at protagonist Rand al'Thor's home in a region called the Two Rivers.

The "Loux" in Hoarah Loux is a Germanic surname meaning "Lynx Eyed", or having sharp eyesight. The kind of eyesight that would be useful for a man out at sea navigating by the stars. The Prologue of Wheel of Time begins with the previous incarnation of the Dragon before Rand, a man named "Lews" Therin Telamon. "Theron" is a Greek word meaning "hunter". "Telamon" is the name of one of the Argonauts who sailed with Jason to find the Golden fleece. So the full name could mean "sharp eyed hunter, a seeker of the Golden fleece". It seems appropriate that Rand the 'Dragon Reborn' starts off his journey as a shepherd who tends sheep.

The Western Zodiac consists of 12 astrological signs (and sometime Ophiuchus), of which Aries is the first sign. The story associated with the constellation Aries is the story of the Golden Fleece. Wheel of Time was also supposed to be 12 books long. It was very important to author James Rigney (pen name Robert Jordan) that the series end with the 12th book - but circumstances being what they were the series eventually concluded with Brandon Sanderson writing the 12th, 13th and 14th volumes.

That's about as much as can be covered without getting really into the deep lore of Wheel of Time. I have a lot more thoughts about how both Wheel of Time and Elden Ring are thematically bound to the wheel of Vedic Astrology and invoking themes of a dreamlike collective unconsciousness (the Jungian thing). Also the alchemy stuff.

Some random thoughts from my Classic Who watch, season 14.

I was making Assassin's Creed jokes with a friend for an episode of two of The Masque of Mandragora. They looked like they had a lot of fun with the location shooting and the costumes for this one. And it was fun to watch too! The astrology aspect creates a cool aesthetic, and I love a masquerade. Oh, and the new gothic Tardis console room is very neat too! Lots to enjoy looking at with this one. I'm not 100% certain what happened at the end though. I should probably rewatch this one sometime and pay more attention to the final episode because the villains looked like they were achieving their goal and then all of a sudden it was over and the Doctor had won. Good for him though.

The visual effect of the titular Hand of Fear moving was really good for Classic Who, I wonder how they did that. Anyway, Sarah is just so delightful, her relationship with the Doctor is so cute. A standout scene was the short one where she runs into the power plant after the Doctor when he tells her to stay put, and when he looks at her she just says "I worry about you," then after a short conversation he says the same thing back. Speaking of cute, I've seen clips of Sarah Jane leaving the Doctor before, but I've never seen the aftermath when Sarah immediately starts baby-talking to an adorable dog that's sitting nearby. Why do people cut out the most important part!! The actual plot of the story was interesting. Sarah and the Doctor forming an unsteady alliance with Eldrad and learning to trust each other and learn each other's ethics felt like a unique dynamic in Classic Who. It was a real shame when the plot reverted back to Eldrad Evil at the end. I think it would've been cool if Eldrad was still some kind of enemy of their people in the final episode, but ends up getting convinced by their new associates to have a second go at life somewhere else. Idk. That's probably not the action adventure that the show was looking for. They could've still included all the traps though. Oh well. Oh and my brother and I laughed at the air force planning to launch a nuclear strike on the power station. Just because it's a nuclear power station doesn't mean it needs to be nuked to be destroyed... talk about fighting fire with fire.

The Deadly Assassin must be one of my most-watched Classic Who stories, maybe number 1, because it's one of my oldest Classic Who DVDs. I've always loved its tense political thriller-turned-murder mystery-turned-sci fi simulated reality-turned-old fashioned good vs evil world saving punch em up, all wrapped up with Gallifrey lore and political jokes. Plus the Master's skeleton face, Borusa being aggressively pragmatic, and two of my favourite one off characters. My brother and I agree that all future Gallifrey stories need Engin and Spandrall as Waldorf and Statler: sitting in the top floor of the Panopticon, making jokes and criticising everyone.

The Face of Evil is great. The Face of Evil slaps. There's some top-notch dialogue and the Doctor is spouting quotable epigrams left and right. The directing and acting are great. And so is the sci-fi premise of communities descended from a survey spaceship, guided and shaped by the ship computer who had gone insane (the episode 3 cliffhanger fucking rocks, I get chills watching it). It's a great setting to take a companion from... except of course for the uncomfortable directions of treating Leela like a primitive who needs to be looked down on and taught that the show inevitably takes. But I think Leela works very well in her first story especially. Forget the Doctor Who Lands In A Soap Opera that New Who likes to do, this is Doctor Who Lands In A 2010s YA Dystopia Novel, of which Leela is the main character. My brother rightfully pointed out that the very start of episode 1, which jumps in mid-conversation, very much feels like the recap of a cliffhanger from the previous episode of The Leela Show. I also adore how quickly the Doctor cares about Leela, and vice versa. They immediately start rescuing each other from Leela's former tribe, and the Doctor's anger when someone puts Leela on the brink of death is stronger than we usually see it. I have more thoughts about the two of them but I'll leave that to another time. For now I'll just say... why is Leela so clean-shaved. I couldn't help noticing how smooth her armpits are. Is that really a habit that the Sevateem would've kept? Let Leela be hairy.

The Robots of Death is a pretty good murder mystery with a claustrophobic tension and some compelling (and delightfully awful) characters. But I think it runs out of steam as it goes on- it's pretty hard to keep a murder mystery interesting for 4 episodes I think. And one of the characters dies off-screen, but all of the references to it makes it feels like it was a pretty important scene that was supposed to be filmed. Also, why was Poul assigned to work with D84 if he has robophobia? Anyway. The main attraction, the robots themselves, are really great. Their design and their voices are just iconic. Someday I'm going to do what I did with Sutekh a while back and do a binge of all recorded media with the Kaldor robots, because I want to get round to listening to both the Kaldor City audio series and The Robots audio series.

It's so easy to sum up the pros and cons of The Talons of Weng-Chiang. Pros: Jago & Litefoot, also the gothic atmosphere and Victorian setting. Cons: the racism. So much racism. Did orientalism have to play such a core part of the story. This sucks, gang. I guess thank goodness for the Jago & Litefoot spin-off for giving us the pros without the cons baked in.

Because Adam and Evelyn are so cryptic about everything, pre- amulet Bright could never be sure if his birthday was actually his birthday, so they didn't know their sign. (Foundation people messing with documents of newborn children to avoid their real birthday being on record doesn't sound too far fetched. I can't come up with anything right now, but I'm sure there are SCPs that can use that information for harm.) So when Bright got the amulet and was reborn, his birth chart reset, and this time they know their rebieth down to the second (caught on camera, perhaps). (I wonder if Bright is distributed/sad over that footage?) I'd say Bright is now a Gemini sun, Pisces/Aquarius moon, Libra/Leo rising. I don't believe in astrology so I hope those are not combinations that can't go together. -chisel anon

Gender Headcanon: i like the non binary Charlotte headcanon. I'm not like crazy about it but i think it's neat.

A ship I have with said character: Cordelia obvi. Unless we go with the crack theory that she changed her name to Joanne and fell in love with Maureen. I'm kidding obviously.

A BROTP I have with said character: i am a basic Charlotte-Marvin appreciatior like so many of us. She's basically his impulse control because oh boy would Marvin be getting into Situations without her. I just got a fic idea i probably won't end up writing.

A NOTP I have with said character: because it appearantly needs to be said Charlotte x any man ever why would you ship a lesbian character with men

A random headcanon: you'd think she's the responsible mom friend at first glance but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a dark side.

General Opinion over said character: she's the absolute best. Also i stand by this i get that we didn't have time and the musical focuses on Marvin first and foremost but i somewhat wish we got a deeper look into what Charlotte was feeling after Whizzer's diagnosis since we do know she can't handle faliure and knowing he's one of her close friends and how frustrated she already was from the AIDS crisis even before anyone she personally knows. I just wonder.
