A Red Deer With A Human Heart

All that I left behind was but this empty shell, this body that cannot be called human.

The desire to fulfill just that – Wish – began to strip away the layer of essence that had defined my being, consuming me until I had lost myself. Still, I clung to it, desperately striving to become a creature, I had drifted away from in the process of trying to reach it; without having realized, until it was too late and my silhouette that reflected in people's glassy eyes mirrored what I had become – a Beast. It’s rather paradoxical, don’t you think?

This beautiful image I had of humans had been a lie from the start, an image I created, a nightmare that showed me I didn’t belong, all the same giving me a reason to continue living. Since I thought I would be allowed to see you again, once I looked like your kind.

Given that I gazed at myself with disgust, viewing my existence as unavailing, I was equally unable to recognize the worth of the souls around me; only when your life had been threatened was I capable of understanding that value, which could solely be measured by a humane heart. Only when I myself was in pain, could I understand the sorrow of others.

Every person is precious to another and I had always believed that to be a weakness, something that trapped one in a confined space and withheld one's radiance. That may be the case for some, but what is the point of living a life, in which you are forced to be someone less than yourself? If anything, I am able to let my wings be carried by your refreshing gust of wind. In my eyes, that is freedom itself.

Through your kind words and sincerity, I have come to recognize that my interpretation of a human existence had been wrong, all along. My actions are as faulty and irrational as a human’s: the crimson horns, dyed with the lives that I stole, souls that I shattered, nevertheless, the cherry blossom-colored hair that you loved so dearly as well, inducing a warm feeling in my being. Suddenly I wanted to live, I wished to be cared for. Your Love made me blossom into the person I am now, and you taught me the true meaning of this gentle endearment.

The simple act of lending someone a hand or a glance of sympathy, such simple gestures should not be underestimated since these tiny things, can teach you the true nature of kindness. Yet, the instant you have known love, the malicious behavior, which previously made your body and soul unfeeling, hurts all the more. For one is only able to experience true pain when one has wished for another’s genuine happiness. Regardless, of whether you lost warmth or never possessed it in the first place, both leave a void in one’s core.    

Even though our lives in which we were able to see each other for whom we truly are, have merely begun, I must abandon it. Even when I do not sense the burns and cuts I sustain, I cannot imagine the unbearable pain you must endure while gazing upon the red tears flowing from my lonely heart, leaving for you to guard – The vessel that once held my cherished emotions toward you.  

I wish for you to stay unaware of the truth – that my consciousness is elsewhere, destined to fight an endless battle. However, it pains me to think that you will never find out that we are separated by millions of galaxies and gleaming stars, awaiting my awakening which will never occur. How can they continue shining so brightly, despite your absence?

The salty drops of my soul gather, forming a river of emotions that will drown me.

Please don’t meet me at the river, it isn’t your time.

Queer Angel’s Tea-sis on Darling in the Franxx

Part 1: Introductions-We’re doing this in parts because tumblr says I typed way too much

Welcome guys, gals, and enpals to Queer Angel’s Tea-sis. A series where I discuss the good, the bad, and the questionable depictions of queer characters in anime and apply a queer lens of analysis. As any anime watcher will tell you, there are anime that start so-so but end well or turn out awful. However, few anime has the distinction of starting near-universally applauded (albeit I saw red flags a mile away) and then slowly take a downturn before nose-diving into a flaming hunk of garbage and exiting through the gift shop. Of course, some queer fans saw the death flags of this show’s narrative in the first three episodes of the show with its positing of a post-apocalyptic world where humans achieve immortality at the cost of reproduction and where they rely on quite literally the naïveté and uneducated horniness of teenagers to defend themselves from a subterranean existential threat. By discussing issues in production, story, and representation/messaging I hereby present the case for the designation of the title of “dumpster fire” to the show: Darling in the Franxx (DITF). (franks? Fran-X-X? who cares?)

Production

Taking us back to July of 2017, Studio Trigger announced DITF at Anime Expo 2017 revealing that it would be a co-production with A-1 pictures. A-1 is most known for creating the Black Butler adaptation and Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, but in recent years they’ve gained a reputation for making some … lackluster features like the Sword Art Online franchise and Eromanga Sensei (a production that is gross on many levels). However, during the show’s broadcast (January-July 2018), the team working on the project from A-1 changed labels to CloverWorks on April 1st of the same year. This change may or may not have led to issues toward the end of the series. Another issue with the production was a poor choice of director and head writer for the series. While Atsushi Nishigori has some serious animation chops such as being the Chief Animation Director for Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 and key animation credits to multiple A-tier anime, he had almost no writing experience before DITF. Besides, his sole directing credit for a show was…an adaption of the Idolmaster franchise. Now while I will admit to enjoying some very cheap “cute people doing cute things” musical anime, they’re typically not the most intensive story-wise and Idolmaster is in my personal opinion, one of the most brainless and junk-foody of idol anime. This is coming from someone who watched an anime that was basically a recruitment tool made by the corporate monsters behind AKB48 and still enjoys it while trying to pretend it was made in a vacuum universe where creepy entitled male fans and producers don’t exist.

While I don’t want to place blame solely on Nishigori for the faults of DITF, there were other issues that I will discuss in the later sections, his inexperience in writing and directing beyond single anime episodes certainly didn’t do the show any favors. This is especially considering this was a show heavily publicized by both major studios A-1 and Trigger, was heavily promoted in both Japanese and western anime news media, and was guaranteed to have a lot of eyes on it.

Footnote: Japanese idol culture has the expectation that female idols remain single. The penalty for being caught dating can be getting kicked out of their groups and ostracized by their fans for the crime of dating.

BREAKING NEWS: The 2nd Season of Panty and Stocking anime is being produced by a new Japanese Animation Studio after Gainax

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- After a decade and a half from Season 1 in 2010... Studio TRIGGER, a prominent player in the Japanese anime industry, is making waves with its new animation studio and acquisition of the rights to Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (PSG) from the now-defunct Gainax.

During a recent screening and anime panel by Studio TRIGGER, a reliable source obtained exclusively to OneNETnews, in partnership with Crunchyroll that a new anime project is currently in production. The event took place last Saturday afternoon (July 1st, 2023 at 1:45pm -- Pacific local time). The production reportedly includes a first trailer and key visuals.

Some may recall Anime News Network's previous expo coverage of a lost media context from an anime panel in 2022 at the Anime Expo, an annual event held inside the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC).

This year's 50-minute anime panel at the 2023 expo will feature a re-screening of a teaser trailer to the public, followed by its release on YouTube the next day on Sunday (July 2nd, 2023).

The aforesaid anime has garnered a cult following for its blend of s*xu*l fanservice, crude language and adult humor. It is less likely to have a private lovemaking, chick magnet or both. While romance and attraction are present, the focus lies more on the comedic elements, including the characters' interactions with Miss Anarchy sisters and Briefers Rock. Action and adventure are also play a significant role in the series.

Looking beyond the current production of Season 2, Studio TRIGGER is actively brainstorming ideas for future seasons. The studio may greenlight up to 8 additional seasons or less, depending on factors such as hiring more Japanese and international freelanced animators and voice acting talent. However, the expensive nature of animation budgets and television broadcasting in Japan poses challenges during the production process.

The original anime was directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi at Gainax, with Masahiko Otsuka serving as the assistant director. Yo Yoshinari contributed concept art, Atsushi Nishigori handled the main character designs and Takahashi Taku composed the music with the TCY Crew. OneNETnews cannot independently verify the authenticity of these individuals.

To support the 2nd season of PSG, Studio TRIGGER has introduced online shopping merchandise through its official store, which was featured at this year's expo in Los Angeles, California, United States of America (U.S.A.). For viewers seeking an uncensored experience, Anime Theater-X (AT-X) television may provide the best option, as they cater to premium cable channels and paid online streaming services in Japan. Some international viewers do not really like the censored versions due to legal and personal reasons, catering to specific adult audiences.

Fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming airing of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (PSG) in Japan, with international releases, such as simuldubs on Crunchyroll for example, following several weeks later. The production of Season 2 is currently ongoing, immediately after the American anime expo event.

Idyllic Grasp

Blossoming into the Horizon

“What a wonderful, glimmering Sky,” I thought.

My eyes had always known the Sky in its most vibrant of colors. Therefore, once it vanished from my world, coated by the most impassable clouds imaginable, I did not know what to do.

I desperately tried to grasp it, but it did not grasp me in return.

After repeating the unending cycle of gaining and losing it, I stopped beholding the unstained firmament entirely. Regardless of whether I wished to or not, I realized I had to learn how to survive without it, and avoiding the Sky altogether made it considerably easier.

There is no problem if you act as though it does not exist.

However, there were days when the Sky was so wide and embellished with a vivid blue hue, which made it impossible to overlook, demanding my utter attention. So much so that I could no longer avert my gaze. I felt constricted, yet the Sky did not seem to mind if it could spread its enchanting beauty.

As the clouds and wind passed by, I began to blossom and with my fading youth, my heart became accustomed to pain rather than love.

One day, I ceased to engage the outside. I wondered,” What could I do to convey that my love for the Sky has not faded, but rather taken another form?”

The presence of the firmament I desperately yearned for as a girl was different now. I sought its existence, although in such a manner that I could spread my petals and when needing melodies of reinforcement, knowing that I could simply glance at the vast bed of azure above.

For in the fullness of time, I myself will become another’s Sky.
