The Possibility of the Impossible 불가능성의 가능성

I first met her in 2007 at the Marginal Theatre Festival. There, Park Juyoung presented “Please Confess,” an audienceparticipating performance. “I have a question” was the theme of the 2007 Marginal Theatre Festival, and artists were invited according to this theme. Park’s work, “Please Confess,” was a performance where the audience participated by using a microphone and a pair of headphones. The audience was encouraged to confess their stories on the microphone, but they were not allowed to see, hear, nor otherwise feel the presence of the artist. In this work, Park attempted to overcome the sense of isolation in everyday life and expressed her desire to communicate. And yet, at the time, she criticized how communication became impossible in the internet era due to factors like anonymity. In other words, through the act of ‘confessing,’ Park tried to deal with the isolation caused by the lack of communication. Still, I wonder why she chose the word ‘confess’ for the performance’s title. From what I understand, impossibility of communication takes place on two levels. One is about the individual’s inner self, and the other is about the impossibility of expressing social comments. In the year 2019, ‘confession’ also served as a ‘testimony’ and ‘statement’ of sort, and this gave confession another public meaning. Therefore, “Please Confess,” first announced in 2007, must have been a performance that sought after the ‘possibility of the impossible,’ questioning if one’s voice could be delivered to someone who cannot hear. Instead of discussing the lack of communication, Park wonders if we could communicate the lack; and instead of focusing on the impossibility of communic ation,sheseesifitispossibletocommunicatetheimpossible. Her performance took place in the 2nd-floor studio of Theater the Other. Nobody was there except a sitting mat, and it listened to all the stories that could not bear to be told. Afterward, the audience wrote letters and put them into a mail collection box. Park and the audience are the only ones who know about what arrived in that mailbox.

그녀를 처음 만난 것은 2007년 변방연극제에서이다. <고백하세요>라는 작품으로 관객 참여 작품을 선보였다. 2007년 변방연극제는 “질문 있습니다(I have question)”이라는 주제로 작품을 초대했다. 박주영 작가의 <고백하세요>는 마이크와 헤드폰을 활용한 관객 참여 설치 퍼포먼스이다. 작품에서 관객들은 작가의 상태를 인식하지 못한 채, 설치된 마이크를 통해 자신들의 이야기를 고백하게 된다. 작가 박주영은 일상에서의 고립된 감각을 벗어나 소통하고자 하는 의지를 드러냄과 동시에 인터넷 시대의 익명성 등 소통의 불가능성을 동시에 비판하고 있다. 박주영 작가는 소통의 부재에서 오는 고립을 “고백”이라는 행위로 극복하고자 하였다. 그런데, 왜 유독 “고백”이라는 언어를 제목으로 채택했는지 궁금하다. 소통의 불가능성은 내적 상태와 사회적 발언으로서의 불가능성이 함께 공존한다고 생각한 다. 2019년 시점에서 “고백”은 일종의 “증언”이자 “발언”의 기능으로 그것은 또 다른 공적 의미를 획득하게 된다. 결국 2007년 작품 <고백하세요>는 듣지 못하는 자에게 닿는 “불가능의 가능”을 모색하는 작품이라고 생각한다. 소통의 부재가 아닌 부재의 소통, 소통의 불가능성이 아닌 불가능성의 소통 가능성을 모색하고 있다. 작품은 씨어터 디아더 2층 스튜디오에서 진행이 되었고, 방석이 깔려 누군가 듣지 못할 이야기를 하고 있던 그 순간을 함께 했다. 관객들은 다시 우체통에 글을 써서 작가에게 보냈다. 무엇이 그곳에 당도했는지는 오직 작가와 관객만 알고 있다.
