A corridor towards the public quadrangle, the facade to the baroque library seen on the left, the marble hall to the right of that. Above this hallway is the emperor’s apartment for visiting. The relationship between the library, marble hall, emperor’s and abbots apartments and the abbey church always has a carefully choreographed spatial sequence that acts as a stage during the the tours of visiting dignitaries. 

The architecture was seen as a critical manifestation of power, wealth, and cultural importance in the face of larger political leaders. The opulence and richness of the architecture cannot be viewed in a formal vacuum rooted in aesthetic preferences, but is inextricably tied to the corresponding wealth of the Pope and the great Austro-Hungarian Empire, among others. This theme continued into the following century when Hitler was visiting monasteries across Austria and, for it’s architectural/cultural significance, the St. Florian Monastery was left intact as a concert hall whereas others nearby were ransacked.
