Music performances out of the way, Adam could now turn his full attention to the guests. And there was one who seemed to have caught it in particular.

I thought that ‘smoking' was a rather funny choice of words, considering poor Maxwell Pollack has been walking around half-frozen for the better half of the season... but as far as Adam was concerned, he was nice on the eyes, probably easy (weren't all foreigners?), and by all accounts, stinkin' rich (didn't he say he was a lord or sumthin’?), all of which combined made him a pretty attractive romantic prospect. It certainly couldn’t hurt if he tried to make a move on the guy!

So he came up with the genius idea to offer Maxwell a private tour of the apartment which would, inevitably, end in the bedroom. What he could not have predicted, however, was that his foolproof plan would get thwarted by one very inconspicuous-looking servant and some ACR nonsense. Everything that happens from this point on is ACR-directed and I had zilch to do with it. Read on at your own peril! 🤣

Wondering why Maxwell hadn't followed him upstairs, Adam came back down to fetch him. He was just in time to witness his would-be beau kiss Ambrose, hearts flying around and all. Rage washed over him like a tidal wave. It was him who saw Maxwell first, dammit! How DARE this scrawny little foreign nerd poach on Adam's territory?? If it's a fight he wanted, a fight he would get.

But rather than starting a physical fight, Adam opted for a different kind of power move. He went up to the two men and pulled Maxwell into a passionate kiss, as if daring Ambrose to try and top it. The speechless servant looked on, grinning politely in an attempt to maintain his composure... but it was immediately clear that he was fighting a losing battle. This was fine, he told himself, it was not like he hadn't been led on by the fancy folk before. Highborn lords were more trouble than they were worth, anyway. No, really, he was okay.

Maxwell and Adam were more than just okay, though. The kiss turned into suggestive flirting, the flirting into touching, and it wasn't long before the two men were groping at each other in ways that could hardly pass as appropriate in polite company. Well, at least Tabitha seemed to be into it! 🤣

Luckily, poor Beatrice was fast asleep on the couch and didn't catch anything of what was going on, and Winona was too busy mingling with the other guests to pay her dad’s antics any mind. That's some expensive therapy sessions you dodged there, girls, good for you! 🤣

Welcome to the Layton NPC Showdown!

This is a bracket to determine which of the many memorable NPCs from across the Professor Layton games are the greatest.

GAMES INCLUDED: Every game except LBMR. Eternal Diva characters are also not included here.

WHAT COUNTS AS AN NPC?: Anyone who doesn't have a puzzle animation. Characters excluded are Layton, Luke, Flora, Clive, Emmy, Randall, Aurora, Des, Espella, Phoenix, Maya, Katrielle, Ernest, Sherl, Hastings, and Emiliana.

WILL THERE BE NOMINATIONS?: Nope! Every NPC will be included.

WHAT ABOUT THE LAYTONMOBILE/MOLENTARY EXPRESS?: No vehicles. Not characters.

WHAT ABOUT THE PUZZLE LADS/LASSES?: I only plan on including characters that we can speak to in-game, so no Puzzle Lads or Lasses. Sorry to the people who like them 😔

WHICH CHARACTERS ARE INCLUDED, THEN?: Anyone who isn't an exception listed above that is in the profiles of the game! A full list is enclosed below.

WHEN WILL THE TOURNAMENT START?: More information forthcoming on that! I have to seed the bracket first :)

WHY IS NAIYA YOUR ICON?: In my opinion, she's one of the more underrated NPCs of the series. I'll probably cycle through some of the ones I have available to me right now.

WHAT CRITERIA SHOULD I VOTE ON?: Whatever makes you happy :)

ARE ALTER EGOS SEPERATE CHARACTERS?: No. For instance, Ratman is not included because his secret identity is in the tournament.

US OR UK NAMES?: I will try to make available as many names for the NPCs as possible! Which includes their Japanese names and as many names in the localizations as I am able to obtain from the wiki and my own sources. I'll probably reliably have the English (both versions where applicable), Japanese, and French names for every character when I do the bracket rounds. The list below however is entirely in English.

Word about the Tanners' arrival had spread fast, and as these things usually went, it wasn't long before curious locals were queueing in front their apartment complex for a meet & greet.

Their first visitor was a doe-eyed blonde who introduced herself as Tabitha Dawson. Adam shook the young woman's hand politely, not missing out on the opportunity to give her a less-than-polite once-over. She didn’t seem to notice his glances (not like they were subtle!), but Adam was certain she was just playing coy. This was a foreign land, and he knew the reputation foreigners had. He smirked, picturing her undressed and spread-eagled on his fancy new king-sized bed... (Run Tabitha, run! xD)  But he managed to push the lascivious thoughts aside for long enough to extend a polite invitation to her  and totally didn't check out her ass as she was walking in.

Not long after, the next woman was at their doorstep - a brawny brunette this time - and Adam was starting to think that this Wyvern's Bay place maybe wasn't so bad after all. She too got invited to the spontaneous housewarming party, as did the next person who walked by, and the next one after that. Go big or go home, as Adam always says!

The guests were mingling and the grilled cheese sandwiches were flowing freely, to everyone's contentment. Yet, no one seemed happier about the choice of buffet than young Beatrice, who was a foodie to boot with a special passion for grilled cheese. She even tried to share some of that passion with the guests, with mixed results: Tabitha was reasonably interested in her cheese trivia, while Selina seemed more interested in checking out Tabitha.

And then afterwards nobody was interested in anything anybody had to say, because they couldn't hear each other over the screeching sound of the violin that Adam had started playing (and for tips, no less). His performance was a roaring success, money-wise, as everybody agreed to pay him to stop.

I’m thinking of revamping widower!Mike (hopefully soon) and giving his daughter Grace two brothers, Parker Dodds (who’s the oldest) and Michael “Micha” Dodds jr. (youngest, and named after Mike 🥰). Parker was 5 when his mom passed away, Gracie was 3 and Micha was 1. And ever since then Mike’s taken care of them mostly on his own (of course with sitters and family helping when he works). Mike’s content with not moving on, wanting to have his wife be his first and last love. But with some encouraging pushes he manages to find someone who loves him, quirks and all, and absolutely adores his kids. Only a selected few outside of family knows about them. Parker is the spitting image of Mike, Grace is their mom’s clone, while Micha is a perfectly balanced mix of the two 🥰

In my mind Joe is a single dad (baby mama walked out on him and the kids) of two kids, Josephine and Gabriel. Josie is the eldest. And Joe does his best to take care of the two and keep them safe while doing his job. His mom and sister-in-law help a lot with the two, but like with Mike, not a lot of people know about the kids. Both babies are a mix of both parents, which made Joe’s heart ache at first, missing their mom. But he’s gotten over it now.

Sonny (who I’ve written a family verse for) has a lot of kids! In my Sonnyverse he has the following: Dominick Gabriel, Matteo Lucas, Giovanni Elijah, Angelina Maria, Beatrice Esther, Christian Isaac, Adelina Magdalena and Virginia Louisa. All of them having two names (An Italian and a Biblical). If we’re not talking this universe, I could see him wanting still a few kids, not that many (but to be fair, Christian and Adelina were unexpected twins, and Virginia was not planned 😅). I want to stick with some of the names for them. Definitely Dominick for one of his sons, and they would definitely call him Nicky! 🥰 the whole squad get frequent updates with baby pictures and he gushes about them 😅 just as much. 

Rafael would have one, a son, named Emilio. Rafael was so scared when he found out he was going to be a dad. Scared that he would be just like his father, but the second he holds Emilio in his hands he swears to do right by him. Rafael is set on teaching his son how to be a good person and treat others well. At first Rafael would be hesitant to tell anyone outside of his mami (and abuelita if she’s still there). But then Emilio would sometimes need to stay with Rafael in the office if something came up. And he would, at one point, especially around nap time, be found on the couch with Emilio falling asleep in his lap as Rafael reads for him.

Nolan has one too, a daughter named Eloise. She’s the absolute apple of his eyes, and he’s with her as much as he can. If he’s just gonna be in his office all day he offers to have her there with him, of course having the nanny on standby in case something comes up. Everyone at the DA’s office knows about her, and Samantha will sometimes stop by just to say hi to “my future colleague”. Not many people know this, but Samantha is Eloise’s godmother 😌

Peter has two sons, Andre (after Andre Dawson of Chicago Cubs) and Frank (after Frank Chance of the Chicago Cubs). His partner wasn’t all too happy about the name Frank, so no one calls him that, all going by the nickname Frankie. He teaches them everything there is to know about baseball, starting when they’re born, heck even before that. And will of course coach their team when they start playing. Peter will occasionally call in “sick” on days the boys are playing, and is their number one supporter. 

Nick in my opinion would be done after two. Having Zara and Gil part time (unless it’s after his cameo on the show and he’s married to Cynthia) is enough for him 🥰 he’s a loving dad though and makes every moment with the kids special 😌

Dorothy Tutin and Joan Greenwood in The Importance of Being Earnest (Anthony Asquith, 1952)

For its marvelous sendup of the drawing room drama, the intricate craftsmanship of its plot, and the unparalleled wit of its dialogue, The Importance of Being Earnest has been called a "perfect" play. But perfection in the theater doesn't readily translate to perfection on the screen, so some of the fluidity and buoyancy of Oscar Wilde's play is lost in Anthony Asquith's otherwise admirable film. Asquith's screenplay chops up and relocates parts of some of the play's acts, and it provides a theatrical frame for the action: people taking their seats in the box of a Victorian theater and the curtain rising as a woman raises her opera glasses to view the performance. Asquith immediately breaks from that frame to show Ernest (Michael Redgrave) in his bath, a scene that doesn't exist in the play and seems to be in the film only to demonstrate that the screenwriter has "opened it up" cinematically. But almost immediately we are back in the confines of Wilde's original, as Algernon (Michael Denison) arrives and the exposition begins. The frame is a nice little trick on Asquith's part, but it feels gratuitous. The play's the thing, and for the most part Asquith sticks to it. The chief glory of his film lies in his cast, most of whom had almost certainly performed their roles on stage, given the centrality of Wilde's play in the British repertoire. And although the men are perfectly fine in their roles, the women are what matter in the film: a quartet of perfectly cast, impeccably skilled performers. Lady Bracknell typically steals every production of The Importance of Being Earnest, and with her imperious delivery Edith Evans almost makes the role her own forever -- though the part has been played by equally formidable actresses like Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. No one has ever surpassed her in summoning up the full diapason while delivering the line "A handbag?" Nor is it possible to imagine a more perfect embodiment of Miss Prism than Margaret Rutherford, who makes it quite clear that the character was entirely capable of placing the novel in the pram and the baby in the valise. Gwendolen and Cecily are not so distinctly drawn in the script: Both are cunning ditzes, vehicles for epigrams, satires on girlishness. But Joan Greenwood and Dorothy Tutin give each a discrete characterization, Tutin with her sunny pretense at naïveté, Greenwood with her mastery of a voice that can go from purr to growl in nothing flat. If I give Greenwood the edge, it's only because of the way her slight lisp makes hearing her say the name Cecily such a delight.
