New Year's Evil: Scarecrow.
It's Becky Albright's month! In February 1998, this comic saw the light, bringing this wonderful character full of little details I could talk about for hours. I'll be posting four different topics to celebrate the 26th anniversary of this comic during the following months, starting with the Master of Fear himself.
⸻ Jonathan Crane: curiosities & theories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The story is one of the few told through Jonathan's eyes, explaining that he can spend weeks digging into people's minds. Analyzing them. NYE describes how he acts during this progress of "sowing the seed of horror." He follows his prey, perusing them, and waits until a specific moment to "attack." Scarecrow even went one step further to keep Batman distracted from saving Becky by spraying his fear toxin on the people in the subway.
These panels reminded me of his interactions with Mr. Saint in Fear State. Obviously, he acts a little more "quirky" in this comic, but these traits are present ( are constant ). You can even catch him watching from the roof how his plans are going. Please, isn't the first time he has done that! It seems he likes to watch from above.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, when you think about a comic that made a fantastic work bringing back his design from BTAS, the first name that will get into your mind is Fear State ( with Jonathan Crane ). But New Year's Evil seemed to draw inspiration from his BTAS version too. The shape of his face and hairstyle are similar ( Except for his chin ), including his pointed ears and nose. The colorist kept his red hair trait, being redder in this version. And the costume design also shares some similarities to his BTAS costume. Namely, the mask and color scheme.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another detail related to BTAS that caught my attention ( More like a personal interpretation ) is how Jonathan referred to Becky.
I'm sure you have seen this scene where he greets Harley with a "Good evening, child." Well, he referred to Becky in a similar way ( detractingly ). However, I would love to point out that it seems he calls other people "child" as a way of superiority. Considering that Harley is in her late 20s in BTAS ( Pamela is 28, according to "Pretty Poison" ), and Becky is a university student ( not a child or teenager. I will talk about this in my next post ), it could prove my point here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fun fact. Masters of Fear introduced his childhood backstory in 1995. This comic mentions part of the said backstory, showing an akin panel. If NYE shares a similar timeline, it could mean that Jonathan is 23 ( Read this post with some math ).
Not to excuse his villainous acts, but I will dare to say this. It fascinates me how Jonathan's heart was touched by two girls who shared his pain from his past. Plucky Becky thanked Scarecrow for showing her fears, expressing how he helped her realize how wrong her way of coping and thinking was, making Jonathan tear up a little. Let's remember that Scarecrow saw himself in Becky's fear and pain. Listening to her talk about her past could drag him to act so erratically, thinking that he had the right way of coping, excusing himself, "I'm not helping, but breaking her."
Tumblr media
Obviously, Becky's situation was completely unintended. He wasn't looking to help her in any way at the beginning. But, curiously, this situation repeated itself in Cycle of Violence. Scarecrow kidnapped a girl to experiment with his fear toxin. This little girl, though, started to be kind to him, understanding his stutter and gifting him a drawing, trying to persuade him to let her go. Her words touched him deeply, seeing himself in this little girl's fear, remembering the torture that his own father made him go through. So then, he almost died protecting this kid from an explosion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It could be me, but I see a clear pattern. It's interesting how Jonathan can be contradictory with his actions, and his heart can be sincerely touched when someone genuinely understands him. But he has a trauma and refuses to let it go, convinced that his way of coping ( lashing out ) is the right one. This is why I loved Becky's introduction, for being a mirror for Jonathan Crane, and much more. I will talk about it in another post.
Thanks for reading this first part!

What do you think about the moments Scarecrow goes out to fear attack abusers of others? Not sure if this is really a thing within his character in the other DC Universe comics and I can't find for the life of me the one BTAS comic that seems explore this side, where he stops crime because he feels he's getting too old and wants to enjoy teaching again because he likes teaching, one student sticks out for him for her "intelligence", but one day she appears distressed to him because of her abusive boyfriend and after he discovers what he did he goes after him not only to kill him but torture him, make him feel as helpless as his girlfriend felt.
Personally the comic made me remember a little bit of the Becky Albright situation with Scarecrow, where this Jonathan goes out of his way to revenge himself on his bullies and ends up feeling some kind of... kinship with Becky for him seeing a reflection of himself in her fears, and asks for her to join him as Queen of Fear so she could also revenge on her bullies but in this case as she denies... that, he goes out of his way to try kill her(like originally he was going to do in the comic anyway).
The BTAS comic situation tho is different feels more like although he's possibly seeing a reflection to the abuse he suffered(considering if that version has also suffered abuse, I don't think it was ever mentioned on the show), he takes at his own hands to seek out revenge for that specific student, although should be noted that he took a liking of her(different from Becky this was more of a teacher loving a brilliant pupil kind of situation as far I could see) and as far I can tell I do not really think he would do the same for others unless he could see himself in them?
Feels like an internalized need of some kind, but I'm not sure if it's something that repeats itself in many stories relating Scarecrow
Tumblr media
The BTAS comic you're thinking of is “Study Hall” in The Batman Adventures Annual (1994) #1, which is Scarecrow’s chapter in an anthology story of several failed attempts at reformation from Batman's rogues gallery. Further discussion below the cut:
Interestingly, this BTAS comic actually predates the first Scarecrow origin story where he's portrayed with a history of being bullied (unless you count his being “an outcast amongst his colleagues” in his first appearance in 1941, but that was less bullying and more just him being a creepy poorly dressed recluse who no one wanted to see at faculty parties). The idea of Jonathan being bullied as a child originally came from the 1995 Batman Annual #19, “Masters of Fear.”
Tumblr media
The Becky Albright story, Scarecrow: New Year’s Evil, came out three years later in 1998, at which point Jonathan’s “bullied into being evil” backstory had become well-saturated into the main continuity. Ten years later in 2008 we also get Joker’s Asylum: Scarecrow #1, where Jonathan fakes a license to practice therapy and identifies with a bullied teenage patient named Lindsay. Like with Becky, he tries to convince Lindsay to get revenge for herself (which she ultimately does), but it’s more of a mentor relationship a la Molly Randall (sooo not an erotic obsession that began and ended with the desire to kill her, like with Becky).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this post-crisis continuity (and even non-canon au comics that were published while it was ongoing, like Crimson Rain), Jonathan’s adolescent experiences as a victim of bullying really subsumed his character. To the point that even in his appearances where he’s not actively hunting down his childhood bullies, he’s still thinking about the world in a dichotomy of tormentor/victim, going back and forth between delighting in tormenting others and resenting his continued “victimhood.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the current continuity, it’s very briefly mentioned that he was picked on growing up, but that’s not the trauma that made Jonathan into Scarecrow. That was 100% the abuse he suffered under his creepy mad scientist father, as well as his father dying of a heart attack in the middle of an experiment, leaving a young Jonathan trapped in the testing chamber for over a week, until someone was called to investigate Dr. Jonathan Crane Sr.’s lack of appearances at work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, he does have some moments of empathy for others who remind him of himself in this continuity as well. Most notably a little girl he had been experimenting on in his “Cycle of Violence” arc in Batman: The Dark Knight, as well as the orphan protagonist of in the “House of Gotham” back-up stories in Detective Comics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So despite the fact that the BTAS comic predates Jonathan having any kind of tragic backstory, his having a kind of twisted empathy for young people with similar traits to him is arguably a reoccuring character trait, regardless of how his character has shifted over time. I like the way you phrased it, that it’s an “internalized need” that he wouldn’t indulge with anyone he couldn’t see himself in. It’s possible that he’s being the kind of adult mentor he wished he’d had at their age; it’s just that Jonathan is an extremely deranged person whose idea of “help” is only going to cause more problems in the long run.

If you're in the mood for asks just now, what's your favourite media with Jonathan Crane?
Oh man, I have so many favorites! ("So many" here means "cherry picked, because he doesn't get a whole lot of long-term arcs like the Joker".) I fell in love with him due to a combination of Batman Returns and then a collection of best Scarecrow comics (I think it's this one?)
Probably the best Scarecrow media, in my opinion, is Scarecrow Year One. It gets into the abusive childhood that taught him the meaning of fear, a journey of revenge that started out justified but ended up reaching innocent victims, and that actually had Batman contemplate how he and Scarecrow were two sides of the same coin! My fix fic was largely based on this, to do a bit of self-promotion. As a warning, though, there's a black character who speaks in very painful slang- he's a good guy who is a genius with chemicals and helps Batman, but I definitely winced.
Honorable mentions:
His first ever comic, where he gets fired as a professor and then becomes a supervillain to afford more books. You absolute dork, Jonathan Crane, that's a terrible motivation and I would do the same.
New Years Evil, a comic where he falls in love with Becky Albright and offers to make her his Mistress of Fear, and she says no and the Riddler laughs at him. Becky Albright only appeared in one comic but some of us have shipped them ever since!
Study Hall, a comic set in the Animated Series universe, where he tries to go straight but ends up fear-gassing his favorite student's abusive boyfriend. Batman reflects that he was genuinely trying to do good but only knew how to do it in an evil way, which is one of my favorite villain tropes ever.
Batman: Arkham Asylum, where he's the best villain in the game!
Big O, an anime clearly inspired by Batman, with the villain Alan Gabriel who seems to be inspired by Scarecrow, and gets treated as a serious and scary arc villain! (The anime as a whole has a famously unsatisfying ending, but I'd still recommend it.)
Batman Begins, where he's a very different character than usual, more of a smooth sadist, but he's very very pretty and very very dangerous! "My" Jonathan Crane is more gangly and awkward looking, but he'll always have Cillian Murphy's gorgeous eyes!

Actual Love, Victor season 2 thoughts (taking into account interviews that have come out and press releases, etc.):
Timeline thoughts: The press release says, we pick up at the start of Victor’s junior year (which about 4 months after season 1); however we know from the ‘leaked’ script page that the first scene will just be a direct continuation of the last scene of season 1. So I feel like we’re going to get the rest of sophomore year and the summer condensed into one, possibly two episodes and then we jump in on junior year.
Benji thoughts: We know from interviews with George that we're going to be seeing a lot more of Benji this season and that we're going to learn more about his backstory/struggles.  I've long hypothesized that the reason no one at school knows about the accident is that it happened the previous summer and laws in Georgia (if the producers, writers, etc. even care) state a 12 month license suspension for an underage DUI; meaning Benji would get his license back in the summer that happens between seasons 1 & 2 of love victor. I think we might see him coping with the concept of driving again and possibly being uncomfortable with that due to what happened before, etc. I'm hoping we meet Benji's parents, but as there haven't been any casting announcements in that regard, I'm not holding my breath. Michael has also said we're going to hear George's actual singing voice in season 2 which is exciting on a lot of levels. My dream scenarios include him serenading Victor because obviously or him doing a solo open mic night type performance because I don't foresee the band still being a thing post Benji/Derek break up. I'm hoping we get some flashbacks of Derek being a shitty boyfriend to Benji and/or the break-up because I think it'll be super nice to see the contrast of how much better Victor is. We'll also be meeting Benji's friend Lucy which I'm super excited for. It's about time he has some friends and I'm just really curious what that dynamic is going to be.
Venji relationship thoughts: Scenes we know are going to occur from BTS photos: holding hands in the hallway at school and a double date at Brasstown with Felix/Lake. I'm super excited for both of these scenes, obviously. I'm very curious how the coming out at school thing is going to go for Victor. I have a feeling his popularity is going to dwindle hard and fast. I sort of wonder if we're going to get another Ms. Albright having to put a stop to things scene a la Love, Simon, which I would 100% support because I fucking love Ms. Albright. I'm hoping we actually see some of the beginning of their relationship and how it develops from the friendship they had in season 1, but with the planned time skip we can’t be certain. At one point, many moons ago a producer mentioned a scene being thrown around of an LGBT+ character and a straight character talking about the possibility of them both losing their virginities the same weekend (imo, this has to be Victor/Felix) and there has been mention since that time of this season being “spicy” in Michael’s words and generally more mature-themed, etc. as it was actually written and produced for Hulu directly unlike the first season. This all to say, I’m really hoping and somewhat thinking we’re going to get a Victor and Benji have sex for the first time mention at least (which is bound to be awkward af).
Salazar family thoughts: We know from interviews with Ana that Isabel is going to be the parent who struggles more with Victor's coming out (due to her religiousness). I'm hoping they actually show some of that struggle because I actually have two cousins that are gay (and brothers) that grew up Catholic and their mom definitely went through it when the older one came out (he did so almost a decade before his younger brother), so I think it could be really interesting to watch that play out on screen. I have a feeling Adrian might be a little comic relief/saving grace for the family situation because for the most part kids just don't care about this kind of thing and I think that could be really nice for Victor to have someone that honestly just doesn't think any different at all and still just wants to hang out with his big brother. I'm curious how Pilar is going to handle it; I don't think she'll have an issue with the gay thing, but I definitely think she's going to have an issue with the cheating on/hurting Mia part of everything. I'm also curious to see how the separation of Isabel and Armando plays out. I haven't seen a lot of pictures or anything about James being on set for season 2, so I have a feeling Armando moves out and we won't see too much of him.
Basketball team thoughts: I have a feeling at least some of Victor's teammates are going to have an issue with his sexuality being as we are in Georgia and as Leah Burke once said (in Becky Albertelli’s novella Love, Creekwood) ‘Georgia’s gonna Georgia’. I have this image of a basketball game where Benji is there watching (obviously) and wearing Victor’s away jersey (because that is 100% a thing you do in high school) and a kid from the other team asks why that guy is wearing his jersey and Vic’s just like, “He’s wearing my jersey for the same reason Mia’s wearing Andrew’s.” But that’s probably just my fic writer brain talking (p.s. I may write that if I have time before season 2 happens). Tying into the last section, I want to know how Isabel’s feelings regarding Victor’s coming out are going to affect her support of his basketball career (if at all).
Mia thoughts: I do think at some point Mia’s going to at least kind of forgive Victor or at the very least hear him out. Obviously we have a BTS photo that proves Lake at least is willing to sit at the same table as Victor which I don’t think would happen if Mia wasn’t at least kind of okay with everything. I also think Mia/Andrew is going to happen for real, but maybe not right away.

Favorite scarecrow cosplay(s) you've seen?
I don’t really have a favorite, I tend to like them all.
I would check out @mistressoffear‘s Becky Albright cosplays, as well as her boyfriend Spoop’s Scarecrow cosplays. I mention them because they’re the most unique and scary looking costumes out there. They do more than copy Arkham Asylum, they both have created original designs with real fright factor! Also, please check out my cosplay tag for some other great costumes!

Do the names Becky Albright or Molly Randall ring any bells?
Oh, Ms. Randall and Ms. Albright.
Molly Randall was one of my brightest and most eager pupils back in my teaching days. She holds a clinical therapy position at Wayne Tech now, if memory serves. She recognized me on the streets a few years ago and followed me to my apartment. When I opened the door, the poor girl all but fell into my arms. She was covered in her own blood, and she just SOBBED. Evidently, a colleague of hers had decided she OWED him sex for, I don’t know, smiling at him once? He’d attacked her that night, and she ran to me and begged me for help. Needless to say, I gave that animal a piece of my own mind.
As for Ms. Albright… *sighs* I regret to say I treated her rather poorly. A bright young law student at the university, she was the only one brave enough to testify against me when I was finally apprehended and initially charged for my crimes as the Scarecrow. I hunted her down after the incident and gave her a taste of my toxin…only to find I saw myself in her terror. I spent the weeks following tracking her down again, and tried to convince her to join me. Needless to say, she refused, and in no uncertain terms. I daresay I lost control, and attempted to kill her. Fortunately, Batman arrived in time to stop me. I hear she’s enjoyed success nonetheless, however. I believe she’s up for the position of district attorney.

Let me start by saying this, this book was everything I wanted it to be and more. Becky's writing style really gives readers a glimpse into the confusing realm that is sexuality but gives us the happy ending we deserve.
From the first page I was hooked (that's normally very difficult for me to say). Often times, the first page of a book is okay and I wait to see what the characters are like before I make a decision. Immediately you're thrown into a very uncomfortable situation for Simon. A  classmate is blackmailing Simon into getting him a date with Simon's friend Abby. In return for this, Simon won't be outed to the school.
From this conversation alone I knew I was not going to be a fan of Martin Addison but I was curious to see what Simon was going to do about the situation.
We follow Simon's journey throughout the school year, all the fights, the drama, the school play and until finally the picture-perfect ending in which he finally meets his online lover.
The entire concept of Simon  and Bram e-mailing each other and slowly falling in love made my heart burst at the seams. I couldn't get enough of these two!! They're supposed to be anonymous but Simon wants to meet Bram so badly he starts "accidentally" slipping clues to his identity in the e-mails. Call me cheesy but the one thing I adore about reading love stories is getting to see how the character begins to realize they are in love with someone. Simon's giddiness about meeting Blue is almost impossible not to fall in love with. You almost wish the same thing would happen to your own love life.
Now while all of this was super adorable to read and made me squeal in the breakroom at work there was the  part where all hell broke loose. Simon is outed by none other than Martin Addison. The reason he's outed is also ridiculous and the way his friends handled it? Even worse.  It's almost Christmas and Martin decides to submit a homophobic post to CreekSecrets (an anonymous tumblr page for their school) on Christmas Eve. Now outing people is NEVER okay, it's not anyone's place to disclose another individual's sexuality but to do it on Christmas Eve? You have to be some sort of monster. I felt so utterly heartbroken for Simon, he was planning on coming out on his own terms and was forced to come out in an unpleasant manner. Luckily, his family didn't care and were happy as long as Simon was happy.
His friends on the other hand...
First, Leah and Nick come over the same night and don't mention anything of it to Simon. Instead of offering some emotional support to Simon and letting him know that they were there for him they decide to just act incredibly awkward around him and take off.  Abby is the only one who messages him, asks if he's okay and reassures him that she loves him no matter what.  Fast forward a little bit and Simon is all by himself. Simon clearly wasn't in a good headspace and was being blackmailed about his sexuality and everyone decides to make it about themselves. Leah gets mad that Simon told Abby before her but I really can't blame him, Abby shows a lot more caring personality traits than Leah does and he felt more comfortable telling her. Abby later gets upset that the entire reason they were hanging out with Martin was because he wanted a date. Basically, everything goes to shit for Simon as if being outed wasn't bad enough he's on the verge of losing all of his friends.
Bonus: I just need to add that I completely adore Ms. Albright, shes a complete badass for sticking up for Simon and letting the school know that she will not tolerate any sort of homophobia.
Thankfully, Becky doesn't let the story end on a sad note. Simon realizes that "Blue" is really Bram and they end up meeting in the cutest way possible. A carnival date??? It took everything in me not to cry happy tears in the breakroom.
Everything works out for Simon in the end and I cannot even begin to describe how happy that makes me. A gay love story with a happy ending!!! I would read this book a million times over and never get tired of watching Simon and Bram's love blossom. They're so pure and mushy for each other you can't help but smile.   My final thoughts are that everything in this book was realistic. Simon questioning himself, the nervousness of being openly gay, the giddiness and the rush of being in love but also acknowledging the homophobia in Simon’s world. Simon and Bram are and interracial gay relationship who deserved every ounce of love and admiration that came their way. How could you not fall in love with the way they remember little things about each other, the gifts (specifically the t-shirt) and just how happy they make each other.  Well this is the end of my review, I couldn’t put everything in here but I hope this inspires someone to read the book and watch the movie.  Love, Kimmy

Love, Simon. Before, After, and During the Special Screening
Yes I am aware that I saw it like literally before most of the country(ies) but this would never freaking post so here we go.
WARNING WILL HAVE SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK Also, I will be leaving some points out because I don't wanna spoil EVERYTHING. Before the Movie
Even before 6:30, there was a long ass line to get into the theater.
Someone had decided to walk around the block as they were waiting to go into the theater (you couldn't enter the theater until 6:00) and everyone else just joined in My mom complained about the exercise.
I met two other people and they were hilarious.
When it was finally time to go into the theater, people in the back of the line started screaming and RAN to the entrance. It was chaos.
The esculator up there was crowded and packed, I have never seen so many people that excited.
Okay, they had two theaters showing the movie at the same time.
I honestly thought that I wasn't going to be able to see the movie, because they overbooked both theaters and I'm sure some people had to go home.
When we got into the theater, I was able to get like the second to the top of the theater seats. Those are some of the best seats in the house.
I MET BECKY AND SHE WAS SO NICE AND I WAS SHAKING WHEN I MET HER.
It was like seriously batshit crazy
The woman said that the actors were going to come into the theater that made the loudest noise first.
SOMEONE MADE A SIGN THAT WAS ASKING NICK TO PROM.
The woman said "And of course Nick is here!" AND THE WHOLE THEATER EVEN ME STARTED FREAKING OUT.
OH OH SO THE ACTORS WENT DOWN THE FAR LEFT SIDE THAT I WAS ON AND THERE WAS LIKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THING THAT SAID "People on the left side of the theater, please do not stand."
NICK WALKED RIGHT PAST ME AND HE SMILED AT ME
They talked about the movie before it was started and as the actors turned to leave to go into the next theater, I yelled out "WE LOVE YOU NICK!" AND HE YELLED BACK "I LOVE YOU TOO!" AND OH MY GOD BEST DAY EVER.
OH OH ALEXANDRA'S MIC MESSED UP AS SHE WAS TALKING AND SHE SCREAMED "NO!" IN A HIGH PITCH CHILD'S VOICE AND IT WAS SO CUTE.
During the Movie
oh my fucking god this is going to be amazing.
*20th Centery Fox logo plays. Everyone flips the fuck out*
Simon came onto the screen and everyone was so silent.
Martin is introduced in the first few minutes, and he starts talking to Abby. She gets really uncomfortable
NICK IS SO FUCKIN HOT
Martin, no honey please, don't be an asshole
"They were literally dry humping each other under the table."
Simon's email changed...
Honestly, I loved Leah.
Nora was so freaking adorable.
"DEAR, BLUE I'M JUST LIKE YOU" WHEN THAT EMAIL STARTED EVERYONE (INCLUDING ME) STARTED SCREAMING
THE PRINCIPAL HAS TO BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS.
• After the principal took Simon's phone, Simon tried to take it back and it was hilarious
That Cabert practice, half the time I was excited but then I knew that after that scene everything would turn to shit
• Martin, your an asshole, stop.
• Wait, I think I know the actor from somewhere.
• THAT HALLOWEEN PARTY AT BRAM'S HOUSE WAS AMAZINGLY PUT ON
"Post Presidency Barack Obama."
• Simon, Bram, Abby, and Martin played this drinking game and I forgot what it was called, but Simon and Bram got hella drunk.
• Simon and Bram sung karaoke together it was adorable.
• Simon then sung by himself it was cute
• Simon, drunk in the bathroom: "Bram, it's me, Jacques."
• SIMON WAS FUCKING HAMMERED
• Martin spit up on Simon's John Lennon coustume.
I loved the part when Simon got home drunk and his parents were just like "He didn't drive drunk and he's home before curfew. We're good parents."
So that scene where all of Simon's friends came out as heterosexual? It was a fantasy, it didn't actually happen XD
They did like this fantasy thing where Simon was in college and they were singing and dancing (fuck I cannot remember the song) and when everything stops, Simon looks into the camera and he says "Okay, maybe not that gay."
Cut to play practice, Martin gets a "paper cut"
Have I mentioned that Martin is an asshole? Yes? Well to bad he is.
Cut to Waffle House and Simon, Martin, and Abby were practicing lines but then Martin starts asking Abby about her personal life.
"If you don't say it I won't stop."
"Oh my god Martin no."
"ATTENTION PEOPLE OF WAFFLE HOUSE! I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT MY FRIEND ABBY SUSO DESERVES A... "" DESERVES A GODDAMNED SUPERHERO!" "YEAH A GODDAMNED SUPERHERO!"
Simon, honey, Lyle isn't Blue.
Oooooooohhhhhhhh jealous Nick.
Cue football game.
Simon just starts getting like really really pissed at Martin and just like demands that he asks Abby out.
"Oh say can you see by the donzerly lights..." *Martin comes over and wrestles the woman for the mic*
"I'm sorry but what I'm about to say is way more important than the national anthome, I'm sorry America." When Martin said that, the whole theater just gasped oh my god XD
Martin does his speech thing, Abby rejects him.
Martin gets pissed and oh hey, he posts the emails.
BLUE LIKE OH MY GOD SIMON JUST I CANNOT JUST LIKE UM AHHHHH
Oh oh I think I should mention that there's a character called Ethan who's gay and dresses like a girl and he is amazing and a badass.
ONCE THE EMAILS WERE POSTED, NORA WAS JUST SO CONCERNED AND SHE CAME INTO SIMONS ROOM AND I'M JUST LIKE SHE WAS CRYING AND I WANTED TO HUG HER?????
Simon finally came out to his parents on Christmas.
Oh I should mention that Simon sorta lost his friends??
Leah is in love with Simon.
Oh, I should also mention that according to Becky, Leah is bisexual.
After Christmas when they got back to school, the principal was so supportive. HE HAS A GAY PRIDE FLAG ON HIS SUIT AND I NOTICED IT AND I STARTED FREAKING THE FUCK OUT
"Did you only date me because I looked like a guy?"
"No, I broke up with you because you didn't."
There are these two bullies (I refuse to type their names) and they were just bullying Simon and Ethan and like oh my god.
HI, YES, POLICE I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT A MURDER.
Mrs. Albright, your doing amazing sweetie.
Ethan: You know you could've talked to me right?"
The principal oh my fucking god, I wish my principal was that accepting.
Simon eventually goes onto Tumblr and writes a post, saying that everything about him was true and he asked Blue to meet him on the Ferris wheel.
Simons last ticket on the Ferris wheel Martin runs up screaming "WAIT! IT'S ME I'M BLUE!" and the whole theater lost their shit and started laughing.
"No your not.' " Yah, I'm not. But here how much is a ticket? Last ride is on me."
BLUE A.K.A BRAM FINALLY SHOWS UP AND THE WHOLE THEATER STARTED SCREAMING
AT THE TOP OF THE FERRIS WHEEL SIMON AND BRAM KISSED AND OH MY GOD, EVERYONE STARTED SCREAMING AND CLAPPING AND OH MY GOD
End of the movie, Simon picks up Nick, then Leah, then Abby. They go to the coffee shop and order five coffees. Cue the screaming.
SIMON PICKS UP BRAM FROM HIS HOUSE AND THEY KISS AND OH MY GOD
At the end of the movie, everyone just started clapping and yelling.
After the Movie
A lady came in and said "Scream if you knew it was Bram all along." EVERYONE STARTED SCREAMING
I should also mention that the mics were messing up.
I wasn't really able to stay for the q&a so I wasn't able to meet Nick :(
But overall, the movie was so fucking amazing 12/10 I would defiantly recommend it, and I would definitely go see it again if I'm ever able to.
I have to say though, if your parents hate bad language, don't see this movie with them. My mom saw it with me and she criticized it for the bad language and she kept saying that it just kept shoving the fact that she should just accept gay people into her face so she wasn't very happy. I didn't talk to her for an hour after that until she apologized. Anyways, that's all for now, unless I may write some fan fiction on it. Would you guys like to see it?
Also, no I didnt go threw every point and fact of the movie because I didn't wanna spoil it. Thank you!~Alex

pre-new 52 scarebat ship meme
(I actually have no idea what to call this period of comics. The dc wiki calls this the “New Earth” universe... it’s like, everything after Jason Todd was retconned out of being a circus acrobat up to Flashpoint. Anyway like a month ago I asked @heroes-etc to send me questions for this version of scarebat from this ship meme but then forgot that I did it because I got distracted by other ships. Sorry Jonathan...)
4. Who can’t keep their hands to themselves?
Bruce does DO physical affection — I mean, how many comic panels do we even have of him making out with Catwoman on rooftops — but he’s not especially forthcoming with it. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that his love interests are more likely to instigate contact than he is, especially when that love interest is a villain like Selina or Talia (can you even IMAGINE him trying to take them off guard in a fight by grabbing their face for a kiss? Because I cannot).
Tumblr media
He does occasionally instigate affection with his children/proteges, though usually it’s in instances where they obviously need comfort. Bruce isn’t always great at handling complicated emotional situations, but grief and trauma is something he understands very intimately, and he never hesitates to physically reassure people who are in that kind of pain.
Tumblr media
In situations where someone isn’t in the active process of being traumatized, he’s less forward with physical affection. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll reject it if it’s instigated — depending on who you are, of course. I’m guessing he wouldn’t put up with hugs from random members of the Justice League. Superman is his best friend and he would probably try to wiggle out of 90% of Kal hugs if doing so was physically possible. Most of his loved ones don’t really spring physical affection on him unless they need it or it’s an especially emotional moment, however. It’s not really Bruce’s primary love language.
Tumblr media
Jonathan seems even less physically affectionate than Bruce, though obviously doesn’t have a lot of opportunity to demonstrate how he feels either way. Master of Fear offers the only example of him expressing explicitly romantic affection that I know of (unless you count his terrorizing Becky Albright in New Year’s Evil as physical affection, which... might be how he’s thinking of it...?), and it’s entirely instigated by Sherry Squire. He does ask her to the Halloween party, but she’s the one who takes him down to the furnace room for some “one-on-one” time and tells him to kiss her.
Tumblr media
He also notably does not actually get a chance to kiss her, mainly because the whole thing was a prank meant to humiliate him. This might be why he doesn’t try to instigate anything similar with his next crush, Dr. Linda Friitawa (again, unless you count Becky Albright, but I can’t find New Year’s Evil to read anywhere so my only knowledge of his interaction with her comes from Tumblr. I’m like 80% sure he was supposed to be interested in her romantically, but asking someone to do supervillainy with you isn’t the most direct way to express attraction, so I’m taking that as more obliqueness from Jonathan).
Tumblr media
He never expresses any direct romantic interest in Linda, but at the very least he clearly cares about her more than he cares for most people, since he, like. Defends her in conversation and apologizes to her for things that aren’t even his fault. Which means a lot, coming from a sociopath with no regard for human life. They do hold hands at one point, but Linda reaches out to him first, and he waits to see if she’s going to back away from his reciprocated touch before he reaches for her other hand.
Tumblr media
He never instigates anything further with her, possibly out of fear of rejection. Unfortunately, it turns out that this was a good call, because Linda was only pretending to be nice to him while Penguin was paying her to experiment on Jonathan without his knowledge. When Batman figures out what they’re doing, she immediately fucks off and starts dating Black Mask.
Tumblr media
Even more unfortunately, his 45 seconds of hand holding with Backstabby McMad Scientist is probably the only mutual physical affection Jonathan has ever experienced in his entire life, so honestly I have no idea if he would be more into it as a concept if it was offered to him more often. He’s clearly willing to return physical contact when it’s initiated by someone else, so maybe it is something he would seek out in an actual relationship? He DOES get handsy with Bruce when he has Batman tied up sometimes.
Tumblr media
9. What is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?
Trip out on fear toxin, both of them, hands down. There are few things more embarrassing than, as Jonathan aptly describes it, being “reduced to whimpering quivers” in front of your enemy. Especially an enemy who’s presumably jotting down notes on your worst fears, since Batman/Scarecrow fights tend to just be competitions in who’s more frightening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. What do they hide from one another?
I mean, obligatory mention of the fact that Bruce hides things from absolutely everyone (with the possible exception of Alfred, because Bruce trusts him as completely as he is capable of trusting anyone, and also because it’s really hard to hide things from a parent whose involved in every aspect of your life and already knew you before you developed your pathological need to obfuscate your feelings and intentions).
Tumblr media
As Wonder Woman pretty aptly describes during the Tower of Babel arc, even Bruce’s closest allies are never going to hear the full story from him. So it’s deeply unlikely he’d ever be 100% truthful with a supervillain, even if they got close AND Jonathan reformed.
Tumblr media
But it’s notable that Jonathan’s fear toxin has actually given him a more honest look into Bruce’s psyche than he would ever purposefully give to people who aren’t close family members. And by “close family members” I again pretty much just mean Alfred. Unfortunately for Bruce, nothing forces emotional transparency like mind altering drugs. Fortunately for Jonathan, nothing forces emotional transparency like mind altering drugs! Not that I’m recommending that anyone drug a romantic partner into being honest with them. But Jonathan is a trained psychiatrist, so I assume his psychological know-how combined with insights gleaned from the dozens of “sessions” he’s had with Batman in the past would leave him more prepared than most to decipher the mystery that is Bruce Wayne. (@heroes-etc: riddler is SEETHING.)
Tumblr media
Jonathan meanwhile is more than capable of putting together a clandestine scheme, but in respect to himself he’s actually pretty straightforward. Though his driving motivation in this continuity gets more and more complicated over time, from the early 90’s “I just like fear” to the early 2000’s “my Granny tortured me with birds when I was a child and now I’m obsessed with inspiring the same fear and submission she forced on me onto others,” what doesn’t change is his willingness to monologue about it to anyone who’s listening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, anything that Jonathan is unable or unwilling to go into detail on, Bruce is more than capable of puzzling out himself. In Scarecrow: Year One he successfully tracks down Jonathan’s old home to recover and read through Granny Keeney’s diary, and after Scarecrow’s Master of Fear origin was published, it’s clear that Bruce has done his research on Jonathan’s childhood. There’s even a (presumably unintentionally) hilarious scene where Bruce pauses mid-rescue of a man that Jonathan has kidnapped and traumatized with fear toxin to lecture him on having bullied Jon in high school.
Tumblr media
Is this really the time, Bruce???
(@heroes-etc: oh 100% he nailed that timing.)
13. When do they realise they should get together?
Well, circling back to Tower of Babel, it’s revealed when Ra’s al Ghul has Talia steal Bruce’s contingency plans for defeating the Justice League that Bruce has “borrowed” Scarecrow’s fear toxin in case he has to take down Aquaman.
Tumblr media
This was back when Scarecrow had a number of different toxins that induced different phobias, or made people hallucinate hyper-specific nightmare scenarios (such as “being eaten alive by roaches from the inside,” for some terrible reason). Batman notes in his contingency files that Scarecrow has already done the work for him; presumably Jonathan had already designed a formula to induce hydrophobia, so all Bruce had to do was steal a vial of it from a crime scene.
Tumblr media
(The sentence “Why not make him incapacitate himself... perhaps through fear?” alone is like 90% of why I think these men would get along like burlap on fire if they ever actually cooperated on something. Also, unrelated, but the polaroid of Jonathan he has in the Aquaman file is weirdly adorable.)
Bruce’s plan for Arthur is incredibly effective, and notably also Bruce’s only contingency that isn’t either inherently lethal or a ruthlessly sociopathic betrayal of emotional vulnerabilities that had been revealed to him in trust and friendship (RIP Kyle Rayner).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Notably, Bruce’s plans for Kyle and several other leaguers directly involve using their worst fears against them, even without a fear toxin conveniently tailored for this purpose. Bruce just really likes using fear as a weapon against people.)
After Tower of Babel, Bruce obviously needed to create new contingencies, since the whole point is that they were secret plans that no one could see coming. In canon, Bruce goes on to create the A.I. satellite Brother Eye for this purpose (which backfires even worse than his first set of contingency plans, because of course it does). But I think an interesting alternative could have been Bruce tapping Jonathan for more toxin strands tailored to taking down the Justice League. If Bruce Wayne offered to pay Scarecrow’s way out of Arkham in order to develop formulas that could neutralize the world’s most powerful superheroes, is there any way that Jonathan would turn him down? I mean, obviously he would plan on betraying Wayne at some point, and Bruce would similarly be working against Jonathan’s best interests. But maybe if they set aside their “who’s scarier” dick measuring contest to work together for once, they could come to recognize their shared passion: scaring the shit of people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, the Jonathan in this continuity really likes books. And you know what’s a reliably sustainable source of books that can’t be confiscated by the authorities? Dating Bruce Wayne. The manor alone probably has an insane amount of rare books that have been hoarded by his family over the years. It’s like a weird reversal of the Beauty and the Beast, where the rude rich guy who gives a library to the love interest he may or may not have technically kidnapped is the pretty one.
21. Where do they get nervous about going with one another?
If they were dating, I’m guessing Jonathan wouldn’t want to go anywhere in public with Bruce at all. Bruce Wayne is a celebrity bachelor, and celebrity bachelors get a lot of attention, and people who take celebrity bachelors off the market get a lot of NEGATIVE attention. The public reaction to Bruce settling into a committed relationship with anyone would be the kind of weirdly resentful gossipy judgement that the girlfriends of famous princes or actors or musicians always get from tabloids and entertainment television, but in Jonathan’s case it would be a million times worse. Not just because he’s a supervillain, because if there’s any town that would expect its most eligible bachelor to eventually date a supervillain, it’s Gotham. But more specifically because “ugly social outcast” is one of Scarecrow’s most enduring character traits. Not exactly the traditional trophy wife. And though Jonathan’s Scarecrow identity seems to distance him from a lot of the shame he suffered growing up, I’m guessing that the kind of spiteful vitriol that would follow him anywhere he accompanied Bruce would at the least bring back some very unwanted memories.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruce probably doesn’t have the same discomfort Jonathan would with being seen together in public. He doesn’t care if people think Bruce Wayne is insane or lacking in judgement as long as they don’t think he’s Batman, and I’m sure he’d find a way to spin “dating a man who prefers to dress exclusively in burlap” into something appropriately characteristic of playboy idiocy. But while he'd definitely respect Jonathan's wishes to stay out of the public sphere, he would probably enjoy any opportunity to bring Scarecrow into Gotham high society, since his presence would definitely shake up a party, and Bruce is generally extremely bored at any social event where he doesn’t have anyone to snark with. And with Jonathan’s scathing wit as entertainment, Bruce might one day fulfill Alfred’s wish and actually make it through an intermission sometime.
Tumblr media
I’d say that Bruce would be nervous about taking Jonathan out for “field research,” but I’m sure it would be one of Scarecrow’s requirements for any long term collaboration, so it’s something that he would have to get used to pretty quickly. He would probably endeavor to keep Jonathan away from anything that could retrigger his less healthy behaviors. On the other hand, it’s not like Bruce does that for himself, so it stands to reason that he probably wouldn’t be able to successfully control Jonathan in that regard either.
Tumblr media
It doesn’t help that one of Jonathan’s primary motivations in villainy is his childhood, which is... exactly the same thing that Bruce is fixated on. A significant portion of Scarecrow: Year One is the two of them waxing poetic about how similar they are in this regard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Relating to this, even though it might be a terrible idea, I don’t think Bruce would be able to resist encouraging Jonathan to reconnect with his mom. Bruce would never recommend for someone like Cassandra to seek out a relationship with her father, but if someone he cares about has a LIVING parent who WASN’T abusive to them? It seems unlikely that Bruce wouldn’t advocate for reconciliation. Jonathan’s dad obviously never cared about the teenage girl he knocked up or their bastard child, but Karen Keeney is a different story. DC Holiday Special ‘09 makes it clear that Jonathan was taken away from her against her will, and she’s spent a significant portion of her life wracked by guilt imagining what the woman who abused her was doing to her son.
Tumblr media
Ultimately she attempts to commit suicide because she feels personally responsible for every terrible thing her son has ever done, which is tragic because really she’s the only member of the Keeney family completely blameless in the creation of the Scarecrow. In Scarecrow: Year One Jonathan clearly resents her for leaving him and moving on to have another baby that she actually did keep, which I would call a really paranoid case of jumping to conclusions if it didn’t seem extremely likely that Granny Keeney told him his mother didn’t want him and left him to be tortured on purpose.
Tumblr media
(Side note, it is REALLY weird how young Karen Keeney is depicted in Scarecrow: Year One. At times her son looks older than she is, and it doesn’t help that her second born child is an infant for some reason. Even if Jonathan is only thirty years old here, then unless she had him at younger than fourteen, she should already be in her mid-forties. Why did she only have a second child so late in life? The implication with her abusive husband is that she ended up getting trapped in a bad relationship for survival when her family kicked her out as a teenager for disgracing the family by having Jonathan. It would make way more sense for her child with him to be at least in elementary school. Also the scene would have been way more interesting if Scarecrow’s sister was old enough to talk.)
Thankfully Deadman manages to convince Karen to hold on to life long enough for someone to call 911, and she ends up surviving the suicide attempt. But were Jonathan ever to reform, it seems like reconciliation would be really healthy for both of them, since miraculously Karen still seems to care about Jonathan despite everything he’s put her through, and they’re both clearly still suffering from the after effects of Mary Keeney’s abuse.
Tumblr media
Bruce would be enthusiastic about this prospect for obvious reasons, although he would presumably still be nervous about the possibility of everything going terribly wrong. And even if everything went perfectly right, he would STILL be nervous, because everytime Jonathan goes to see his mother there’s a chance that she will mention the time that she kissed Batman full on the mouth. And that is not information you would ever want your psychologist boyfriend to know, unless you want to be mocked with Freudian buzzwords for the rest of your natural life.
Tumblr media
(...This would also count as a thing that Bruce hides from Jonathan.)

Part 26/80 of my Female Rogues of Gotham City series
For all his self-righteous, poorly-disguised sadism and complete intellectual detachment, preferring to see his fellow man as merely a guinea pig for his latest experiment, the Scarecrow has one hard and fast creed: he will not hurt a child.  He’s worked for too long as a professor to deliberately allow any young person to come to harm.  The irony in this case is that he has seen no problem in ruining the lives of several young women, either out of revenge or a misguided attempt to “help” them.  After all, his first casualty was a female bully at his high school.  None of these girls suffered any lasting physical damage, but the psychological damage can never be undone.
Molly Randall was perhaps the most benign case, a literary and musical wunderkind who had quickly become Professor Crane’s favorite student during his days at Gotham University; her academic performance was unparalleled, but she led a rather lonely life and had a pathological fear of being alone.  This led her to the crushing arms of quarterback Matthew Bromley, who attempted to sexually assault her at a party and ended up screaming and faint in the Gotham General ICU after Crane took revenge on her behalf.  Deeply troubled by what her seemingly-kind professor was capable of, Molly tried to distance herself from Crane from that day forward and has since had trouble trusting authority, but some part of her is still grateful that she was able to convince a rogue to defend her honor.
Becky Albright went from the title “Plucky Law Student” after testifying against the Scarecrow at a criminal trial to “Gotham’s Final Girl” after resisting psychological torture and gaslighting from the same man, first out of revenge, then out of some twisted form of empathy.  After learning that this slip of a girl, who suffered from fibromyalgia and walked with a cane, shared many of the same fears he did, he tried to make her into his “Mistress of Fear” and even made her a costume before she refused in no uncertain terms.  Now, Becky tries to keep under the radar, with her photography and cartooning hobbies and job at a local radio show, but if the Scarecrow ever came poking around again, she’s promised to become even more terrifying that he could ever hope to be.
Lindsay Jones was an emotionally stunted girl who only felt comfortable behind a camera, had been bullied all her life, and only knew how to go to the most extreme outward displays to express herself; when a violent nervous breakdown left her a danger to others and herself, she was sent to Arkham Asylum for psychiatric help and left in the care of Dr. Crane.  There, she opened up about the societal traps and phoniness she saw all around her, and Crane encouraged her to lay them bare by exposing their fears, even getting her to agree to let him tag along to a class slumber party so that he might help her take revenge on her so-called “friends”.  Far from learning how to control her own emotions, Lindsay became proficient in manipulating others, but in doing so, Crane’s new protégé drove others who might have genuinely cared so far away that she now finds herself more alone than ever.
Abigail O’Shay was once on her way to a doctoral degree in psychology and showed a deep empathy and fascination for people who were driven by trauma to do extraordinary and sometimes despicable things; she would soon find out what that was like for herself when Professor Crane singled her out to be one of his test subjects for his fear toxin.  Horrified by what had been done to her, even moreso when the doctors at Arkham told her that the damage inflicted on her brain by the chemicals was irreparable, she skipped straight to the anger stage of grief and joined the Victim Syndicate, a group of young people looking for revenge on the rogues’ gallery for ruining their lives.  Styling herself as Madame Crow and developing her own strain of fear toxin to give Crane a taste of his own medicine, Abigail remains at large and looking for a way to take the Scarecrow out of the game permanently.
Coraline Keeny is the Scarecrow’s half-sister, an innocent young girl who still lives with her parents in Alabama; she enjoys drawing, collecting stuffed animals, finding odds and ends for craft projects, and all the same things any other eleven-year-old girl would.  And her parents would like to keep it that way, so she has never been told about her half-brother and the things he has done…much less the fact that he tried to kill her as a baby.  Once in a while Coraline has asked about her family and wondered about what horrible things they must have done for everyone to be so afraid to mention them, but she’s decided that ignorance is bliss and that studying to become an artist when she grows up is much more important.
Credit goes to @definitelynotclayface for the character of Coraline Crane

//more headcanons about Becky being half Mexican:
-She has dual nationality, and can therefore vote in Mexican elections, work there, and have access to healthcare and education in the country. -Her INE/IFE card includes both last names (Albright and Alvarez) -Actually, the first time she remembers travelling to Mexico was for her first surgery, since it was cheaper to have it done here. -A LOT of her treatment has taken place in Mexico City public hospitals, and those are the ones she sees in her nightmares, since they are often overcrowded and the waiting times are hell. -She almost stayed in Mexico for college, but couldn’t stand to be away from her home for so long. Besides, she had promised her dad she would stay close, in case either of them needed the other. -She has traveled to Mexico only once after her father died. She went on her own, and stayed for a full week, mostly visiting family and monuments. She has a full album of photos of her taken in front of her favorite places (almost all of them are from the anthropology museum and Casa Azul). Her favorite out of all of them is the one where she’s standing halfway up on the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan. She still doesn’t know how she managed to climb that far up. -Somehow, she also made it to the top of the pyramid of the Moon on a different day. -She owns a Death Whistle and won’t hesitate to use it as an alarm. -As I’ve mentioned, she can’t cook to save her life. However, the one dish she can’t mess up is rice and beans (moros con cristianos), and her fridge is often full of containers with it. She can live off that for about a month. -She’s only voted once in the Mexican elections, and you can bet your ass it was not for Peña. -She also dislikes the conservative party with a passion, but sees it as the less extreme option, as opposed to the far-left parties or the one that’s been in power forever. -For those who know: she would have voted Cárdenas.  -She has worked as a court interpreter once or twice, when no one else was available. In fact, she’s considered this as an alternative career, should being a lawyer fail her. -She’s totally used to the switch in nicknames. She knows that she’s Rebe for her mother’s family and Becky for everyone else, and has no problem responding to both. She DOES have a problem with non-Mexican people calling her Rebe, for some reason. -But seriously why does Mexico have free healthcare and the U.S. doesn’t? She doesn’t get it. (I don’t get it either). -She has considered moving to Mexico City, Guadalajara or Monterrey, but cannot bring herself to leave Gotham for some reason. -She also saves all year long for tickets to Mexico, and often visits during Holiday season. She always saves for two tickets, but goes on her own and spends half of the money for the second ticket on souvenirs. -At least half her clothes are from Mexico. She owns at least 3 traditional skirts, four blouses, 5 tote bags, a million shawls and a ton of huichol jewelry she never wears but loves to look at. - She owns at least 3 of these. -SUPPORT ALL MEXICAN ARTISANS. -Seriously, if she sees you bargaining with an artisan she will END YOU. -She sometimes wonders if she should have stayed in Mexico and studied there, simply because of how much cheaper it would have been. -She braids her hair for November 20th. She’s also always wanted to dress up as an Adelita , but doesn’t know if she should, so she simply sticks to the braids. -And we’ll talk about her fascination with death and Mexico’s traditions surrounding it in another post, but it’s kind of a Big Thing for her.

I hate to see female characters created only to have a relationship with an established male character and give them a story arc, then never be seen again... Feels like they're just accessories to a male storyline. I avoid stories about Jonathan and female characters/potential love interests because of this, but in doing so I've never read such a story and don't know if there are any out there that treat their female characters respectfully, and I'm too afraid to get burned to give one a shot.
I understand your frustration anon, that happens a lot in comics. However, I don’t think you should avoid these comics just because the female characters feel like accessories to the main story line. With that mindset you’ll be missing out on great stories. I highly recommend you read these comics anyways. Sherry Squires, an antagonist from Batman Annual #19 is mentioned in several issues and plays a huge role in Jonathan Crane’s New Earth origin story. There’s also Becky Albright from New Years Evil: Scarecrow, who arguably is more interesting than Jonathan. While she only appears in one comic, it’s such a well written story that it’s a shame you’d avoid it. You’d be pleasantly surprised to learn that this plucky schoolgirl beats Scarecrow at his own game.
Just give these comics a chance, you won’t regret it.
