#before his proscribed death
Text
The two committees signed arrest warrants against Danton, Desmoulins, Philippeaux and Lacroix for the following night. In the morning, Marat's sister, having learned about it through the indiscretion of an employee of the Committee of Public Safety, who had heard a few words, ran to warn Danton. As he had already left for the Assembly, she went there and called out for him. “Mount the rostrum,” she said to him. ”You have no time to lose, because the rumor is that you have already been arrested: the opportunity is favorable: Tallien presides: your friends are numerous, and your eloquence will crush the committees. In circumstances such as these, it is the one who attacks who wins.” ”I would have to proscribe them, replied Danton; because I know Billaud and Robespierre: they are relentless.” ”But since they want your head, take, if necessary, theirs, remember that, without you, Robespierre will very quickly be swallowed up himself. My brother told me the day before his death that he was only good at making speeches, that he understood nothing about government, and that he would lose his head at the first crisis.* If he abandons you, his friend, you, the man of August 10, he is only a villain; he must perish. Collect your thoughts for an hour, and mount the rostrum: change the committees; proscribe them if necessary. "Well! Once they have me arrested, would I not be acquitted by the revolutionary tribunal and brought back in triumph, to the Convention, like the Friend of the People was? Then my enemies will be confounded and order will be restored without bloodshed.” ”Don't be fooled: last year the tribunal was impartial; now it is only the slave of the committees, which after having hindered the defense of the Girondins and that of Vincent, will prevent you from speaking.” Danton fell into reverie.  “Above all, remember,” added Mademoiselle Marat, “that you must neither flee nor hide. Several patriots, in their friendship, have proposed it to you; you were even offered asylum. Danton has no other place than the rostrum. Get up there without delay; this is not just about your salvation, but of that of all of your friends, but of the salvation of the republic. Farewell." Danton shook her hand and left her, promising to not lose time.
Histoire de la Révolution française (1850) by Nicolas Villiaumé, volume 4 page 40-42. Villiaumé had gotten into contact with Albertine Marat before her death, so it’s most likely she herself who is the origin of this anecdote. It ties in rather well with the by Alphonse Ésquiros, who him too interviewed Albertine near the end of her life, reported part: ”She then spoke to me about Robespierre with bitterness. ”There was nothing in common,” she added, ”between him and Marat. Had my brother lived, the heads of Danton and Camille Desmoulins would not have fallen.”
*According to a woman who lived next door to Albertine at the time of the latter’s death in 1841, she didn’t arrive in Paris until after the murder of her brother, at the request of Simonne Évrard — ”One day I said to her: “But, Mademoiselle Marat, you say that you came to Paris after Marat's death, however, I read a book where the author says that you attended his wedding with your brother.” - “That’s a lie, madame,” she replied. And, you see, Mademoiselle Marat was incapable of lying.” (Cited in Marat et ses calomniateurs ou Réfutation de l’Histoire des Girondins de Lamartine (1847) by Constant Hilbe). So either she or Villiaumé is mistaken here.

Lae'zel is young when she first reads forbidden words, and it is a long time before they mean anything to her.
They are heretical; as much as any githyanki would care to call it. These are words at the heart of a forbidden figure, the arch-traitor (in the eyes of Vlaakith, and then Lae'zel has no reason to think anything but that her will is law). Then, she thinks the proscribed thoughts, and feels the proscribed hatred of him.
The gith who, at the precipice of their victory over the illithids and over all that was not gith, all that might pose a threat to them and their absolute security, had split their people into two.
Once, the gith had stood under one sky. And then he spoke, and they stood under two skies. No longer was there simply gith; they were the loyalists to Gith herself, the githyanki. And then there were the githzerai, the followers of Zerthimon.
So. They are instructed not to read the words of the githzerai. Lae'zel is told, in such ways does heresy creep in.
She reads it, nonetheless, as she destroys the records. They are gone, from the world. But later, she realizes, the words remained.
The words were a part of her now.
They were not spoken by Zerthimon. But they were spoken by a githzerai who followed him; who was chained in slavery through words and the false promises of a treacherous monster, and through many lifetimes that githzerai suffered the indignity of those chains.
The monster died, again and again. And where once there was cold ruthlessness, something else woke up. And the githzerai came to know the friendship of a tormented immortal, who vowed to free him from the chains of promise. And so, that githzerai vowed to meet death with his blade, and together they came to a fortress made from regrets and sorrows. And there, that githzerai met his death.
It was not his final death. He rose again. But his first death was against impossible odds. He knew he would die; he knew what was coming. He met it anyway.
Now, Lae'zel's nostrils flare. Now, she breathes in the air, and she thinks that now, she may meet her own death.
Vlaakith comes. Now, Lae'zel thinks that all she has heard of the githzerai and Zerthimon has come from Vlaakith and those who speak her lies, and she remembers those words from a githzerai himself, untainted and sincere.
Now, she repeats the words that githzerai spoke. It feels right to do so, and suddenly she feels a surge of kinship; to one who may well have counted her an enemy, but for a moment she fancies journeying to the plane of Limbo, and opening herself to the danger of the githzerai, if that also means she may open herself to what wisdom they have, that could never live in githyanki philosophy.
Now she wonders if her people, chained by deception and obedience, have ever had philosophy. Was there ever anything for them but Vlaakith's chains?
She breaths out again. She greets what may be her death.
She speaks, and now she speaks the word of that githzerai, whose heart seems to echo her own. She thinks of the chains of words and false promises.
The wings of red dragons come closer. "I may be bested in battle..."
She readies her blade.
Beside her, the movement of her allies (her friends) stand close. They are with her, to the end. If she dies, she thinks, she dies with them, and she will die with honor.
"But I shall never be defeated."
And, for a moment, two skies became one again.

Scaramouche x reader
Any reader type
Angst; no comfort, reader’s lowkey bat-shit crazy, mention of death, mentions of vore/gore, Dottore is his own TW, the darkest fic I’ve written yet, the twist was actually on accident I swear, I might community labeling just in case, I don’t know if this is fair punishment for losing my 50/50 on his banner…
Word Count: To be added
Quiet. That’s how the day was so far. But it wasn’t about to be, although no-one knew that yet. You hummed idly as you set up the camping table.
You had been traveling with Scaramouche. Dottore had insisted on you being Scaramouche’s partner for a mission. Which is something you accepted in fear of becoming another one of his test subjects.
Sighing you fixed the pot over the campfire as you sat down on a makeshift seat. You didn’t know where Scaramouche had went and you didn’t bother to ask.
A few minutes passed by before you checked the stew in the pot. Nodding to yourself in contentment, you started to fix two bowls; one for yourself and one for Scaramouche.
You started to eat, not bothering to wait for him to return. It’s not like he would be back anytime soon, right?
A few minutes had passed and you started to worry about his whereabouts. You knew he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, but you never could be too careful.
But oh. Why was your stew…crunchy? The more you thought about him the more the stew ‘crunched’. You spit it out as you felt something sharp-like touch your tongue.
Oh. It was…porcelain? Why would there be porcelain in the stew? But them again…when was the last time you’d seen him?
It was before you started cooking. When you drunk something that Dottore packed for you to “help you focus” due to your “problems he observed and proscribed”.
And then…you and Scaramouche got into a fight and you hit him? Or something. It was fuzzy to you.
But the porcelain in the stew…you must’ve broken off something of his into the stew, right? Right.
But eagle eyes would spot the purple ‘blood’ trail leading behind the makeshift preparation table. And the somewhat shell of the puppet that was missing an arm.
What was in that “medicine” that Dottore gave you anyways?

20. laughing into the kiss
"You are being," Silas says severely, "completely and utterly ridiculous."
"Am not," Colum replies, tone completely devoid of amusement. "It's a real and serious condition."
"It is not."
"It is. And you would see your nephew die of it rather than administer remedy."
Colum is laying flat on his back in his cavalier's cot, eyes closed, feigning near-death. It is not a difficult thing to pretend, in his perpetually exhausted condition. He surely looks half-gone already. The purpose of this exercise is to buy him more time laying flat on his back in his bed, because his mattress feels better on his spine than does standing. So far, it is working, even if it does result in his being harangued by his increasingly irritated uncle for his pretended illness.
"There is no such thing," Silas says very sternly, "as a disease that renders you unable to get out of your bed and engage in your daily tasks unless —"
"I'm dying, Uncle. You care not at all that I'm dying. I feel myself fading even now."
"You are not —"
"The light of the Lord descends —"
"You are nearly forty years old —"
"And I'll not see another, for your callousness —"
"There is not a disease," Silas repeats, rather loudly, "that means you cannot get up like a grown man and do the work the Lord proscribes you before you have received a kiss."
The elders are going to hear him in the hall at this rate. If Colum didn't know better, he would say that Silas Octakiseron, twenty years old, devoted servant of the Emperor Undying, head of the government of the Eighth House, Master Templar of the Order of the White Glass, foremost religious official of the Dominicus system, frequent lover of the humble cavalier primary Colum Asht, was about one moment short of stomping his foot.
He suppresses a smile, but it's a near thing. He can feel his lips quirk.
"You are laughing at me," Silas says imperiously. "And being incredibly foolish in doing so."
"Not at all, Master. I find myself very grave. I face Death with my head high and eyes forward, as befits a cavalier of the Eighth, knowing that the Lord Over the River waits to call me home, surely in only moments —"
"Colum!"
"And yet an ailment so easily healed —"
"The Eighth House does not negotiate with terrorists!"
"A breach so simply repaired —"
"I am not rewarding this behavior!"
"A solution the one I love best in the world is so uniquely capable of providing —"
"Ugh!" Silas finally declaims, and though Colum's eyes are closed he can envision with perfect clarity the pinched expression that accompanies this, just as it has always looked.
"You are such a child," he grumbles. "I was supposed to have my hair done ten minutes ago to deliver the late morning mass and now I am going to be tardy, and I will blame you, Colum Asht, if anyone asks after the cause."
Colum cracks one eye open, just slightly, determined not to laugh. Silas, very pink in the face, crosses over to him and grips his face none too gently in both small hands, bending down to peck him perfunctorily on the mouth. He yelps when Colum catches him by the waist in one arm, sitting up and kissing him properly. He does laugh then, just a bit, in his triumph, and Silas makes a disapproving sound in response.
For a moment Colum almost thinks the unimpeachable Silas has forgotten himself, because disapproval or no, he allows Colum to kiss him rather deeply, almost sliding an arm up and around his neck. If he had, he remembers himself very quickly, because he pushes Colum away with an irritable noise, and in a great rush announces, "There, you're healed, stop being an idiot and get up before I make you offer penance during the service."
"Of course, Master Templar," Colum says, rising at last with a painful, crackle-jointed stretch and, still in his sleep clothes, dutifully trailing Silas to his desk to tie up his hair.
In the end, he has only made him five minutes late.

Grey's Anatomy: Keep the Family Close (20x02)
"Discretion is my middle name. Actually, it's Elaine." Yasuda, I love you. Let's dive in!
Cons:
Schmitt and his patient Dante call it "The Great Bake-Off" instead of "The Great British Baking Show" or "The Great British Bake-Off" and I'd just like to lodge a complaint on that. What the hell? Who says that?
Link and Jo's subplot this week is about Link being more romantic and sentimental, and a somewhat joke-y exchange where Link is offended that Jo doesn't remember the details of how they met. In the end, Jo makes a romantic meal and lights candles to reinforce that she appreciates the romance in their relationship. There's nothing offensive about this necessarily, but it just feeds into the worst vibes I have about this pairing. It feels forced, it feels proscribed, it feels like they need to come up with over the top sappy moments to try and convince the audience that they're really in love. And I'm not convinced. I did kind of like the Amelia and Jo scene, though. I think it's sweet that Amelia clocked the relationship issue and took a risk by saying something.
Pros:
I love the concept of the interns having to complete a bingo of basic procedures to earn their spot back in the OR. It adds a level of comedy and competition to them, carrying through a theme we've seen with these five interns since the beginning. But it also gives an opportunity for our characters to grow. Of the five interns, I think Blue is still distinguishing himself as my favorite. It's an easy but effective trick, to have him be seemingly callous and disconnected from the humanity of his patients, but then to learn his lesson and speak to the family of a young man who got shot, with such compassion and care. Bailey clocked that growth in him; it seems like Kwan is one to keep our eye on.
Teddy is, as always, far more tolerable as a character when she's not partnered with Owen for her scenes, and Yasuda is so dang charming that I actually ended up really liking the stuff with the two of them in this episode. Teddy insisting that she's totally okay and then bursting into tears when prompted by Yasuda to really register the reality of her near-death situation, was both funny and touching. I also like Teddy trying to help Yasuda with her check-list of procedures on the sly. It doesn't really work out in Yasuda's favor, but it's cute idea, having the Chief of Surgery trying to give her a leg up.
One last note on Yasuda: her and Helm going at it to open the episode made me smile; happy for these two! I hope we can give Helm more to do as a character this season, she feels perpetually just off to the side of the main action. I also loved the contrast between them going hot and heavy, and Amelia talking to her cat.
Schmitt is still the cutest character to me. I really liked the vibes with Dante, and I hope that can maybe turn into something for him! It was fun to see Schmitt being so cool and professional about the HIV diagnosis while also creating a personal bond. He's grown so much from the baby queer who was kissing a man for the first time just a few years ago. I'm excited to see where this goes.
It was so good to see Ben, I feel like it's been forever, since he's off doing cool stuff over on the spin-off that I refuse to watch. I liked him giving advice to Bailey that these interns might be different and stand up for themselves more than she's used to. And I liked the conclusion, too, that Bailey is the one who has changed, actually. But Ben makes an apt comparison between being a parent and taking over the residents: Bailey has done it before, and she knows when to put her foot down, and when to hold a hand.
I honestly really liked the Lucas and Simone scene at the end. Because I totally get where Simone is coming from, she's been through such a lot of chaos recently and she's genuinely trying to do the right thing by backing off and letting Lucas know that now isn't the right time for them. But... the second Lucas gets mad, you realize that he's... kind of right. Like, extremely right. Simone has been very selfish throughout this rough patch and has not appreciated how much she's been hurting Lucas by jerking him around and then turning to him when she needs some comfort. It's a complicated situation: I agree with Lucas that Simone has behaved poorly, but I don't hate her for her behavior either. They agree on one thing, that she definitely needs to get her shit together. Lucas claims he won't be waiting for her when she does, but I suppose only time will tell.
I got actually emotional about Amelia reaching out to Winston. Like I teared up a little bit. I've realized recently that an easy emotional trigger for me in fiction is when characters are lonely and bravely try and form connections with those around them. (Let's not analyze why this might hit me particularly hard lol). And this was just a prime example of that: Amelia calling Winston her family, acknowledging their rough patch but hoping that they can stay family anyway. Winston agreeing to go eat at Joe's was a lovely little capstone as well. I'm proud of Amelia for realizing she's having a rough time and making concrete moves towards improving that for herself.
Generally speaking I think Jules ranks last for me in terms of my interest level in the new intern characters, but I did like the general plot of this big extended family and their wacky and dangerous baseball game. It's so unrealistic to have a doctor suddenly snap and tell a family to get their shit together, but whatever, it made for a fun moment from Jules, and I liked her grudging acceptance and low-level horror at being named the MVP for speaking the truth.
As always, lots of plot threads going on, plenty to keep me interested. I hope we can see some romances blossoming between Schmitt and Dante, and more with Yasuda and Helm: love to see those queer relationships on this show, and also it means we can focus on love stories less boring and aggravating that Link/Jo or Owen/Teddy.

The UK’s charity regulator is investigating videos of antisemitic speeches given by former Iranian generals to British students, as well as footage of "death to Israel" chants at the British premises of an Islamic charity.
UK officials probe Iran generals' antisemitic talks to students https://t.co/8GJvEReZt2 — BBC News (World) (@BBCWorld) January 22, 2024
Two of the videos being investigated by the UK’s Charity Commission show talks by members of the Iranian regime’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with one of them describing an apocalyptic war with Jews and Holocaust denial.
The videos, which the BBC saw and verified, were recorded in 2020 and 2021 and show three events. Two were live-streamed speeches by former and active commanders of the IRGC, while the other was an in-person event inside the Kanoon Towhid Islamic Center in western London, commemorating Iran’s top military commander, General Qasem Soleimani.
Soleimani was killed in a US air strike in 2020. Chants of "death to Israel" were heard during the in-person event, but it wasn’t clear or known who was saying them. There is also other evidence of an IRGC commander giving online talks to British students, where the commander bragged about his role in training Hamas fighters before the October 7 attacks in Israel that claimed the lives of over 1,200 Israelis.
This is former IRGC commander Gen Saeed Ghasemi - he falsely claims the holocaust never happened and urges students to join an apocalyptic war. pic.twitter.com/oT5jMZZ6Bb — Ed Thomas (@EdThomasNews) January 23, 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Islamic Students Associations of Britain (ISA) and its affiliates promoted the online talks in advance, and these events took place in Kanoon Towhid Islamic Center, which was used as a meeting place. Unlike mainstream Muslim student groups in the UK, the ISA was founded to promote the philosophy and ideology of Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s first supreme leader and the founder of the Islamic Republic.
Kanoon Towhid is also owned by the Al-Tawheed (TUCF) Charitable Trust, which has already been investigated by the Charity Commission after reports of the event honoring Soleimani, whom the British government sanctioned for his links to terrorism. The commission is investigating the videos seen and verified by the BBC, including one footage of this event.
Orlando Fraser, chairman of the Charity Commission, has previously warned that charities must not "become forums for hate speech" or extremism. The commission has the authority to investigate, sanction, or even close down charities that violate regulations.
This is ridicuously shocking. How does this go under the radar? — Melanie Amini (@TheMelAmini) January 23, 2024
Alicia Kearns, a Conservative MP for Rutland and Melton who also serves as chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee in Parliament, described the speeches as a “brazen act of radicalization," adding that the IRGC should be added to the government’s list of proscribed terrorist groups in the UK, which would make it illegal to be an IRGC member or show support for the IRGC.
In one Instagram Live recording from Iran, which was live-streamed in September 2020 and has been viewed about 1,500 times, IRGC commander Hossein Yekta said universities have become "the battlefront" and urged students to become "soft-war officers.”
The other video of an online talk from January 2021 glorified the death of Soleimani. Seen by thousands of people, the video shows former IRGC commander Gen Saeed Ghasemi comparing Soleimani’s death to the movie Terminator 2, saying that after Soleimani was killed, the broken pieces would come back together, stronger than ever before.
I thought “absolute free speech” in universities was paramount, and that students had to learn to be resilient when faced with “opposing views” or am I misremembering the last ten years or so? — Robin Chud (@MisterDanielBro) January 23, 2024
Ghasemi also falsely claimed that the Holocaust was "a lie and a fake" and talked about an apocalyptic war that British students could join to "bring an end to the life of the oppressors and occupiers, Zionists and Jews across the world."
"God willing, myself and you good students in Europe will be written in the beautiful list of the soldiers of the resistance from tonight." Ghasemi also added.
Lastly, the Instagram Live from 2020 was hosted by Mohammad Hussain Ataee, a British citizen in Yorkshire who was previously the secretary of the Islamic Students Associations of Britain. Although he is no longer the organization's secretary, he still serves as the secretary of the Union of Islamic Students Associations of Europe, an umbrella body that includes the British organization. Although Ataee, who was granted an audience with Iran’s supreme leader Khamenei last year, said the allegations against him were false, he did not answer further questions from the BBC.

Elden Ring: The Wheel of Fortune
"Great iron wheel lined with flesh-flaying blades. Device of torture used by Inquisitor Ghiza. As the wheel spins it causes severe pain and blood loss." ~ from the description of Ghiza's Wheel
The Wheel of Fortune is depicted on the 10th major Arcana of tarot. It is a symbol of the capricious nature of fate and associated with the goddess Fortuna, otherwise known by the Greek name Tiche.
On the Rider-Waite-Smith and Hermetic tarot decks, the Wheel of Fortune is representative of alchemy. The 8-spoked wheel has on 4 of its spokes the alchemical symbols for mercury, sulfur, water, and saltpeter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am very much of the opinion that Elden Ring is a game about alchemy. Not a game that happens to have alchemy in it - I mean that the history of the Lands Between is a record of an effort to achieve creation through alchemy.
Once upon a time the Nox of the Eternal Cities were experimenting with the creation of artificial life. The homunculus is an artificial life form that is one of the outcomes of alchemy. Later on, Godfrey and Marika wished to establish the Golden Age of the Erdtree and rid the Lands Between of Destined Death. The production of gold and achieving immortality are the two classic desired outcomes of alchemy from antiquity. Radagon and Marika seem to have achieved some semblance of the rebis - the alchemical marriage of red king and white queen. This is a concept that pop culture seems to take literally, but is more closely related to spirituality and psychological alchemy than the refinement of literal physical elements.
In Elden Ring, three times the alchemical process has been completed, three revolutions of the wheel and every time the fortunes of the Lands Between take a turn for the worse. Radagon and Marika have an unstable existence that led to Shattering themself and the Lands Between. Marika set the Golden Erdtree as an eternal symbol, but also seems to have trapped the people of the Lands Between in a cursed existence of immortal life, but not immortal health or youth. In my opinion, the Dragonkin Soldiers and mimic tears show that the Nox were responsible for creating the Giants as a form of artificial life form that terrorized the Land for a time before being defeated by Godfrey.
Anyways, the place I was going with this is that I find it very interesting that the origins of the popular Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck and the Hermetic tarot deck both have close ties to a group of occultists called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. And here again we find an Elden Lord: Godfrey Dowson is the name of the man who illustrated the Hermetic Tarot deck. Sometimes, the answers are all there in the manual, once you start looking in the right places.
The tarot major arcana function as a prototypical Hero's Journey - from "The Fool" [#0] to attaining enlightenment and "The World" [#21]. The Golden Order had at the heart of it the prophesy of a new Golden Dawn at the end of the proscribed journey. All they had to do was keep faith in the process and keep spinning the Wheel. But if you pay attention there's something sinister about the way that wheels are used in Elden Ring. Devices of flesh rending torture and as a symbol of enslavement. A promised reward can easily become a curse. To quote from the Sandman: "The price of getting what you want is getting what you once wanted". The World is not truely the end of the tarot anyways, it just re-sets to [#0/22], once again "The Fool".
"Even after exile, Corhyn refused to recant his prophecies. And for this, he was blessed with the guidance of grace.
Since then, the cart wheel draped on his neck has served as a reminder. That true guidance awaits those with iron wills. Those with unwavering faith." ~ from the description of Corhyn's Robes, recalling that there is no outcome to Corhyn's quest that results in him being rewarded for keeping his faith

if you're still doing the wip ask game, could you tell us a little about 'necro' and 'woods'? :3
‘necro’ is a joke title for the less catchy title of Putting the Romance Back into Necromancy. tl;dr (too long; didn’t write): Ewen stops Keith from fully dying, but brings him back in a half-alive form that, despite Ewen’s best efforts, is still dying (though not in a body horror way. more in a ‘time is running out’ way.)
‘woods’ is the one you’ve seen before, which is kind of a blend of folk ballads and heavily influenced by The Decembrists’ Hazards of Love album. essentially, vaguely Tam Lin but with some additional elements. warnings for mentions of suicide attempt (fairly non-explicit.)
necromancy:
“Your friend will die,” said Archie quietly but firmly, as Ewen shut the door to Keith’s bedchamber behind him. “The spell you wove to draw his mind back to his body was not enough. For whatever reason, his soul remains trapped on the border between life and death, neither quite one nor the other.” He shook his head. “It is a black art, Eoghain, to stop a man’s natural death in this way: such things are proscribed for a reason. I cannot imagine what drove you to such lengths.”
Ewen could give him no answer, for the truth was so simple as to be absurd. He had stayed Keith’s death for no better cause than that of his fear of losing yet another he loved. A stupid, selfish fear, and one that Keith now paid the price for.
woods:
You return to me at last, whispered a voice as smooth as water into Keith’s ear. My wayward child.
“I have come to ask a boon, Mother,” said Keith.
Speak.
“I have done as you asked. I served as a soldier of the King and brought victory to his kingdom.”
And in exchange, I gave you the form of a man to wear. Would you ask more of me yet?
Between the trees, the figure of a regally tall woman emerged, as pale and glowing as the moon.
“It is not for my sake that I ask this of you,” said Keith. His mother paused before the tallest of the standing stones and looked at him, her gaze piercing.
No, she said. Her lips did not move as she spoke. It is for his sake. And Keith saw in the black depths of the stone, as vividly as though it were before him, a vision of Ewen Cameron, lying curled on his side beneath the roots of a great oak, just as Keith had left him. His face was ashen, and he shivered a little in the cold, but he did not stir as thin roots pushed their way free of the soil and wrapped themselves around his legs and body.
He is dying.
“Yes,” said Keith, his nails digging into his palm. “Can you heal him?” The roots tightened around Ewen’s injured arm, and Keith watched as Ewen's face twisted in agony. “Mother—”
I can heal him. But I would ask a boon in return. Her beautiful face was blank.
Keith bowed his head. “Anything,” he said. “My life, my body…”
Give him to me, so that I might do with him what I will.
Ice gripped Keith’s heart. “No, no,” he stammered. “Ask me for anything but this, please.”
He will die.
Keith met her night-black eyes. “But he is my true love,” he said. A pathetic, weak excuse, but it was the truth.
Ah, my poor child, said his mother, a smile spreading across her face like a rift opening in the earth. You forget yourself too easily. She moved towards him, the dead leaves of the forest floor muffling her steps. Would you like to remember? She waved her hand, and Keith saw before him the life that had once been his. He saw the great oak, where beneath a canopy thick and green with new life, a young soldier, who knew little of affection, awkwardly and with great sincerity swore pledges of love and fidelity to a woman with hair the colour of sunlight. Too late, he remembered.
“No,” he murmured, but it was not enough to stem the tide of memory. He saw the woman again, smelled her powder and perfume, heard her high, lying voice and the snap of ivory as she broke her fan, frustrated that he would not respond to her. He listened to nothing of what she had to say; he would not even look at her. He stood already beneath the great oak, a length of rope in his hand.
It should have been a good end, a clean end. But the branch had been rotten, and he had fallen. And there he lay, at the foot of the great tree, as a silver woman bent over him and promised that in exchange for his memories and service, he would live. He could not refuse her.

Hello there! .. may i ask .. why robespierre didn't want desmoulins and danton to die? Why he hesitate? What's the reasons for that ? If you have any infos sources anything I will be so grateful to you and thanks ! ..
Interesting question!
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Robespierre didn’t want the death of Danton and Desmoulins. We do know he worked towards bringing them to trial since at least late March, when he openly admitted their ”faction” needed to be purged (March 20 and 21), albeit without naming it. He was the one who provided Saint-Just with notes to use for his indictment against the dantonists, and if you look them over you’ll notice they’re mostly very petty and unserious. On March 31 he was among the 18 people who signed the dantonists’ arrest warrant (which it could be argued was equal to a death sentence) and afterwards he was not a stranger to stengthening the decision made by shutting down those suggesting Danton should be allowed to come and defend himself before the Convention (March 31) and helping pass a decree taking away many rights of the accused (April 4). After the death of Danton and Desmoulins, Robespierre only ever referred to them as traitors and conspirators, both publically (1, 2, 3) and privately (see these notes written on certain ”suspect” deputies, half of which he denounce for having been friendly with Danton). These are all deeds that are a bit too active for him to not actually have wanted their heads.
That said, historians are pretty united on the fact that Robespierre wasn’t the one that provoked or the first one who asked for the death of Danton and Desmoulins. This has to do with his behaviour towards the two in the months before their arrests, openly protecting Danton on December 3 when no one else would, as well as, according to Billaud-Varennes, on an unspecified date at the CPS, and coming to the defense of Desmoulins not one, but four times (December 14, January 7, 8 and 10), saving him from an expulsion from the Jacobins.
So now to your question, why did he choose to act this way? I would say there’s four main reasons, although I won’t dare to guess if one weighed heavier than another.
First off, we have the personal aspect. Danton and Desmoulins were Robespierre’s friends. Desmoulins and Robespierre had gone to school together for ten years when they were young (and while it’s hard to know just what their relationship was like back then, I think the the few pieces  that we do have give the impression that they at least were more than mere acquaintances). Robespierre had then attended Camille’s wedding and held his young son in his arms on multiple occasions. Multiple eyewitnesses also described the two as enjoying each other’s company (1, 2, 3). As for Danton, when his first wife died in January 1793, Robespierre adressed to him what is probably the most sentimental of his conserved letters, writing ”I love you more than ever, until death. In this moment, I am you.” I think it’s safe to say that it hurts to watch a friend die, much less two, and even more so when you are the one responsible for it. Put simply it is something we all want to avoid at all cost. Throughout five years of revolution Robespierre had already lost many friends due to differing political views, and I doubt he was eager to lose two more, this time being much more directly involved in it than he had in the cases of those he had broken with before. A personal relation with Danton and Desmoulins is also something the CPS deputies traditionally described as wanting to proscribe them before Robespierre did (Saint-Just, Billaud-Varennes and Collot d’Herbois) didn’t have.
There’s also a political aspect to it. Robespierre, Danton and Desmoulins had been political allies and fought for the same causes for more or less the entire revolution, and still did not long before the two latter went to the guillotine. What united them in late 1793 was the rejection of ”hébertism” in general, and dechristnanization in particular. On November 21 and 22 Danton and Robespierre both held speeches denouncing dechristnanization, and this was also the goal of the first two numbers of Desmoulins’ new journal Le Vieux Cordelier, the drafts of which Robespierre had read and given his approval to before they got sent to the printer. So Robespierre had the motive to perserve Danton and Desmoulins not only out of friendship, but also because they still proved useful to him in his battle against ”hébertism.” This held true even after December 18, when Desmoulins started using the Vieux Cordelier for things other than criticising ”hébertism” (in numbers that had not been proofread by Robespierre), and the later reveal that his and Danton’s intimate Fabre d’Eglantine had been involved in a serious scandal, which made the two suspect by association. Even though they were now no longer Robespierre’s allies, they were still Hébert’s enemies. Striking them would also mean letting the latter grow stronger, and it’s clear Robespierre didn’t want that to happen (even though he would go on to say that he thought Hébert and Desmoulins ”were equally wrong” on January 8 I think it’s safe to say that he disliked hébertism even more than the ideas Danton and Desmoulins stood for). If we want to get cynical, while it’s true Robespierre wanted to preserve the two while the hébertists were still a force to be reckoned with, there’s no real evidence of him trying to protect them once the latter were down for the count… Something else worth mentioning is the fact that, even though they no longer looked the same at certain topics, Danton and Desmoulins were long time political allies of Robespierre that had more or less always had his back. In his first journal Révolutions de France et de Brabant (1789-1791), Desmoulins had praised Robespierre innumerable times, while his second paper, La Tribune des Patriotes (1792), was created partly with the intention of protecting Robespierre from the many attacks he faced at that time. Even now in the Vieux Cordelier, although he went against many of his standpoints, Desmoulins never openly attacked Robespierre, instead praising him (1, 2, 3) or imploring him to change the revolutionary course (1). This is again an area where Robespierre’s situation differed from those of his collegues who might have wished to proscribe Danton and Desmoulins before he did, as Desmoulins wasn’t so kind as to spare them from any attacks in the Vieux Cordelier (1, 2). As for Danton, as already stated, he and Robespierre had long looked after one another. They were sometimes described as the two ”pillars of the revolution,” and Robespierre must have worried that removing one pillar would also mean weakening the other, along with the entire infrastructure. Even now when their views started to differ, Danton (like Desmoulins) never went on to denounce either revolutionary government in general or Robespierre in particular. Robespierre was a skilled politician, which means he can’t have been unaware of the the importance of having trusted people who can back you up around. Striking what can actually be described as people who had more or less always had his back can hardly have seen like the ideal thing to do, even as they started displaying opinions that were no longer entirely in line with those he himself held.
Then there’s a cautious aspect. Even though Danton and Desmoulins might have been seen as suspect by some of Robespierre’s collegues and several others, there remains the fact that the two were still famous revolutionaries that it could be dangerous to go after, not only because they still had supporters that would be appalled in seeing them get sent to the scaffold, but also because they might actually have the power to turn things around and win if placed before the Revolutionary Tribunal. Then it might be the heads of Robespierre and his allies that ended up in the basket instead. And as it turned out, this almost was what happened, which is why the CPS had to pass that decree on April 4. Robespierre, being a highly cautious person, probably had this in mind when it came to hesitating to strike down Danton and Desmoulins.
Finally, there’s also the question of how long it took for Robespierre to decide weather Desmoulins and Danton were actual counter-revolutionaries or men who had simply been ”misled.” At least in the case of Desmoulins, we know he leaned more towards the latter. This is shown through his interventions in his favor in early January (1, 2) as well as in an undelivered speech where he, although criticising Desmoulins, doesn’t treat him as entirely given over to the counter-revolution. Even after throwing in his weight against him, there are signs Robespierre didn’t view Desmoulins as a full-blown counter-revolutionary. In the notes he provided Saint-Just with to use for the indictment of the dantonists he described Desmoulins as simply having been ”the minion” of Danton and Fabre, and on July 1, three months after the execution, Robespierre referred to him as ”the friend of the conspirator Danton” instead of a conspirator himself. The same thing can be said to an extent for Danton, although here it’s much more clear that Robespierre did eventually come to see him as a conspirator. When defending Danton on December 3 it’s clear Robespierre still views him as a patriot, while he in the above mentioned undelivered speech completely spares him from any attacks. Multiple times Robespierre underlined his wish to punish only ”the leaders of a conspiracy”, but let those who had simply been ”misled” by them walk free (10, 11, 12). I don’t think he would have wanted to go after people unless he was sure they were actually involved in something sketchy, especially when said people were his personal friends.
Hopefully this makes Robespierre’s motivations make somewhat more sense! If you want to hear a professional historian’s opinion on the affair, some works covering it that you can read for free are:

Seduced to Death and Intersecting Otherness in Interview with a Vampire (2022)
In the pilot episode, "In Throes of Increasing Wonder...", of the television series, Interview with a Vampire (2022), the main character, Louis de Pointe du Lac, recounts his origins in New Orleans, Louisiana in the early 1900s and his taboo relationship with a vampire, Lestat de Lioncourt. In the scene where Louis describes his initial encounter with Lestat, upon arriving at a Saloon to see a prostitute named Lily but discovers her already in conversation with the vampire, Louis notes his jealousy and anger towards him at the beginning of their encounter shifted to an uncanny sense of emasculation and admiration for Lestat. In "Tracking the Vampire" (1991) by Sue-Ellen Case, the author explains, "Popular lore tells us that if we look at the vampire without the proscriptions that expel her, our gaze will be hypnotically locked into hers and we will become her victims... Hers is an en-tranced look, and the fascination in it could be read as a response to lesbian desire" (Case, 10). Lestat's characterization aligns itself with queerness despite his outwardly appearance as an able-bodied, charming figure because his unnatural ability to seduce and persuade male characters, as well as his ability to communicate secretly through his hypnotic gaze defines him as an "other" through characteristics associated with homosexual monsters. Which include his selection of Louis as a sexual object which disrupts the heteronormative dynamic between Louis and Lily from potentially procreating and the perception of homosexuals as a threat to others and the community. Although, Louis is depicted early on as a seemingly affluent, locally respected African American pimp, his relationship with his brother, Paul, a citizen priest, illustrates the intersectionality of race and religion with "otherness" due to Paul's continuous criticism of Louis' profession. When Paul is preaching outside the saloon and disrupting Louis' business, Paul questions the "wickedness" his brother is involved in before proclaiming, "the Lord told me to come." Later, Louis explains, "My business and my raised religion were at odds... The latencies within me, I beat those back with a lie I told myself about myself." Case notes, "The queer... revels in the discourse of the loathsome, the outcast, the idiomatically-proscribed position of same-sex desire"(Case, 3). The dimensions of Louis' character as a self-aware wealthy black man in a white man's word, and his lack of commitment to the church considering his prostitution business categorize him as "other".

The Morning of Cicero’s Proscription
The olive trees had never been so plentiful. One could run their hands through the branches lazily and come away with a handful of polished green jewels, soft and unusually bright, to be plunged into clear brine and sea salt.
I had no taste for any today.
The hills were aglow with dawn mist, Jove’s milky breath on the night-cooled soil. I woke early and gazed at the orchard with sheets flattened around me. The linen was awfully starchy. After a while, there seemed little else to do but rise, and I did.
I made for the orchard, barefoot in the frosted grass. The sky was pale, too tender as it stretched above me, tinged with the palest of yellows at its horizon. It seemed for a horrifying moment that it would never wax blue, but rather would blanche into an unbearable, sickly white — but dawn’s rosy fingers soon clambered over the eastern hills. The earth warmed with fresh promise.
I tipped my chin to the bluing sky, feeling like a child again, for once empty of words. It had always been child’s play. Hadn’t it? It didn’t feel so now, of course.
Words, wooden swords wielded by men. Sentences hammered and welded to their fullest syntactic strains, interlocking clauses, invocations and accusations nestled in purple rhetoric. I am not ignorant of my talent, however much I hate the word. Ingenium. In-gen-i-um. Awkward on the tongue, awkward on the conscience — yet so esteemed. I have seen the onlookers, the quick sheen of wetted eyes, the forehead’s gentle furrow, the raise of eyebrows and the gentle parting of lips. These things do not pass me by, nor should they. Rightful awe, manifesting kaleidoscopically, subtly. The wooden blade making contact.
This, I have always said, is the potency of language.
Of course I am glad for it. I wanted my name known, and it is. And, as it perhaps always had to be, it will be my end.
Nomen, dignitas, auctoritas. Auc-to-ri-tas.
I brought myself to a shaky stand, gripping the olive’s trunk. No good would come from waiting further. I took my leave on foot in the most unlikely of directions. Servants emerged from the gardens to witness my plain stupidity, wringing flaxen cloths and exchanging solemn glances.
The orchard and I exchanged a tacit adieu. The susurrus of pale leaves was my usher. My eyes welled warm with tears, but the dry wind whisked them away.
Rome, resplendent in its fatal glow, beckoned me.

The soft yellow light in the canon cockpit came from one small lamp in the ceiling above the seat. It wasn’t nearly as bright as the ships main luminescent lamps, it just gave enough light to distinguish your surroundings. It reflected with a small warm spot in the glass, making it seem as if there was a comet flying towards Ghost, or as if Ghost itself was flying towards a star. Ezra loved sitting in the chair, staring at the endless black-and-white cosmos, at the yellow reflection, at his own nearly invisible one, wondering, whether or not he could see home from this far away.
Probably not. He was home.
The cockpit was a special place on the Ghost. It sort of showed, who lived in it and who piloted it, sometimes even better than the crew’s cabins. Sabine’s seat was easily spotted — colourful, bright even in complete darkness. Hera’s was always by the controls, neat and clean and empty, except for one tiny thing she showed nobody. When she and Kanan had just begun flying together, both still scared teenagers, he carved four letters on the side of the backrest with a piece of shrapnel. They spelled “Hera”. Hera was a bit angry at him at first for ruining the leather, but he knew that she wasn’t. She loved touching it mindlessly, reading her own name with her fingers, touching Kanan’s through space and time.
She was home.
His cabin used to be his personal space for a long time before the boy came. He liked its silence, its gloominess, even. It had nothing in it but a bed and a table, though Zeb had never thought of it as of a prison cell or anything. It felt too welcoming to seem like one. The light wasn’t red or blindingly white, it was dim. The air smelled nicer than in prison and had none of its usual dryness that hurt the lungs. It was a warm, soft, safe place, where Zeb could sleep or just lie with his eyes closed, resting and remembering. Then Ezra appeared, and the room lost its charming minimalism. The boy had almost no clothes, but for some reason there was just too much of everything everywhere now. Ezra was all over the place: in instruments on the table, in paper sheets he used for scribbling something, even in the painting on the wall that Sabine made. It annoyed Zeb for a long time until he realised that without all of it his cabin would have been too…empty? Too lonely.
Ezra’s presence was what made it a home.
For a long time he had searched for those special oils that the Jedi used to burn at the Temple. Or at least for the special scented candles that all padawans had in their rooms. They smelled of hot sand and magnolia petals, of silky warmth and of soothing silence. They could be different, of course. Some smelled of roses and softness. Some — of rainwater and lilies and freshness. Some reminded him of thunderstorm air that’s full of electricity and of dry earth. He looked for them for a long time, but never found them again. It was quite probable that the Emperor had proscribed their selling after the purge, and it made Kanan sad. But one day Hera gave him a little box and told him that it was a present for his birthday, though she never knew his real birthday, and it wasn’t in nine standard months. Kanan opened it gently, finding a set of scented candles under the lid. He knew that they weren’t the Jedi Temple ones, but it didn’t matter. What mattered was that Hera cared enough to give him a present in the midst of fighting the Empire. She found a place for love while surrounded by death, fear and danger. Later that day Kanan lit one of the candles and breathed in the scent. It was an oily one, it smelled of sweet flowers and light cotton and animal fur and it also smelled of Hera. He knew that had he needed to chose now, he’d take the ones she gave him over the Temple ones every time.
They made him feel as home as he’d ever felt since being a padawan.
The cabin she occupied, like everything she’d ever done, carried a thousand of her marks. She liked thinking of them as of her own special kind of fingertips that you just can’t not leave. It made the thing truly hers. Like the armour that she cherished more than most things she’d ever owned. After painting the grey beskar she looked at it, and goosebumps ran down her spine, for now the armour was actually her property. Her legacy. Her right. The same thing happened to her cabin. Sabine painted the first small graffiti on the second day of her life with the crew. It was the letter “P” written in a gradient of fiery orange and poisonous pink. She didn’t have any explanation for the choice, only a feeling that it was right. Many years later she added the rest, proudly and a bit shocked. “Phoenix”. The paintings were her stories, her divination, her relaxation, her pains and sorrows, her passions and victories. It was all here: on the walls of a ship cabin. She knew that it could be torn to shreds easily, that it could all just be blown into oblivion someday, that it could be stolen or sold or painted over with some boring shade…but it would not disappear. She would not disappear. She didn’t perish with her achievements anymore.
And right now, while she was safe and sound, the cabin felt more like a home than anything else in the galaxy.
