Woooo I'm back! I was away this weekend at Thought Bubble, a comic convention that is very near and dear to me :D
...And which also happens to be situated across the road from the Harrogate Turkish Baths that were built in the late 1890s, and with our first mention of Turkish Baths about to come up in Letters from Watson, you know what I did with my evening...
As someone who has ever been to a spa or a sauna, I went into it pretty nervous. I was reassured that I knew everyone would be in swimming costumes and there would be attendants on hand to help, but also nervous that I would do something wrong or end up getting a bit overwhelmed by all the sensory stimuli going on (smells! noise! colours! heat! cold!) I was also worried I'd have to take my glasses off, because I was on my own and I have very poor eyesight without them.
But I guess my raging inner history buff that's both interested in late Victorian forms of entertainment and also pretty interested in Roman baths that are a comparable process won out, because I went.
AND I LOVED IT!
I was honestly fizzing with excitement just to be walking around an environment I'm used to seeing in old black and white photographs...
Tumblr media
But it was like... REAL!!!
Tumblr media
I couldn't take photos in the baths myself because obviously that would be incredibly creepy but please enjoy this picture I took of a logo model in the lobby, and an actual Thomas Crapper toilet, yes I do get excited by silly things
Tumblr media
The process of using the baths was all about alternating heat and cold, with three rooms with different heat levels, and a cold plunge pool and showers.
The best thing about it for me is that while there was a recommended sequence to follow, you could pay attention to your own body and just do whatever you wanted to do.
I was surprised how tolerable the hottest room was because it was a really dry heat, but I spent most of my time lounging around in the two lowest heat areas. If I do it again I'm definitely going to bring a book - I wouldn't have thought that was an option, but they actually provided magazines and I saw a fair number of people reading!
I found myself feeling so happy and floppy afterwards. I joked that it felt like I had no bones. In fact it's been nearly 48 hours now and I swear I still feel like a happy puddle.
Anyway as a treat for reading to the end, please enjoy the Sherlock Holmes Turkish Baths illustration that makes the fandom go absolutely feral:

If I had a nickel for everytime a Christian Kane character dealt with a Major Wheat corporation I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.

Twitter was surprised to learn Hank Green is bi, but I thought I knew that a long time ago. I figured out where from just now: Ear biscuits episode #48, from 2014. An interesting episode in many ways, and sadly, one of the old ones, which don't have a video version.

i find it interesting what the paradox pokemon imply about pokemon evolution (in an actual evolution sense, not the pokemon term of it)
like, the ancient paradox pokemon imply that the Pokemon world was a lot more dangerous in the distant past, and therefore pokemon had to be a lot stronger. it also implies that some evolutions- like wigglytuff and mismagius- didn’t come into existence until after whatever point in time the ancient pokemon are from. are these evolutions new- or are the pokemon we see truly some of the first?
and the future ones imply that, like we know voltorb has, pokemon are able to develop traits we’d deem as artificial over time. it makes sense- as monsters, surely what’s biologically possible for them would be different to anything we know. and interestingly enough, the lack of a steel type in a lot of them implies that they’re not fully metallic, since most pokemon that are are classified under the steel type. so, presumably, they’ve developed electronic components and iron coverings but have a mostly organic body underneath!

Been nerding out about the trees I've been passing on my morning walks. There's a street with a bunch of unusual trees on it & I've been having fun googling them to find out what they are. There's even one with a beautiful leaf mutation the effects the entire tree & a massive hedge wall that's been carefully pruned into shape. 🌳🍃🌲

i love writing my characters; giving them stories, doing research, and just creating.
my favorite thing as a audiophile and visual person, i love lovee Loveee assigning songs to certain moments because songs can say so much. they can have different meanings for the character/s and what they’re going through, and even change up from person to person’s interpretation of it. it’s also easier for you to picture what might be going through a characters head that way. cause some characters of mine don’t show emotion easily for different reasons.
idk i just think it’s cool to make soundtracks for movie/show ideas i have.

AND DAN AND PHIL ARE BACK???
I started this year making a meme about John Green being back and I thought that would be the wildest thing to happen this year... Clearly I was wrong. I feel like the universe is just confused about what year it is... I'm in my mid 20s now and I don't need to be going through this again.

one of my favorite things about gideon is the characterization of "born 2 be jock 😎🔥💪 forced 2 be goth 😔☠️🦴" like quite literally one of the funniest character choices i've seen an author make and pull off

OK, but I love that Essek might be appearing in the Mighty Nein series before he meets the Nein! It's not just me wanting More Essek (though I do) or wanting to see more of what was going on with his dealings with the Assembly (which I also do). I think this could be super fucking interesting from a narrative construction standpoint.
Because I cannot see how you can include Essek from early in the series and not make it clear to the audience that he's the Dynasty traitor loooong before the Nein find out. Essek having stolen the beacons will not be a surprise. It looks to me like the cast are swapping out surprise for a fuckton of suspense. (Suspense vs surprise was explained to me when I was studying narrative structure as 'surprise is when a bomb goes off that the audience didn't know was there. Suspense is when they see the bomb being placed and have to sit there begging the characters to realise it's there.' In this analogy, Essek is the bomb.)
When we watched C2, the question was is Essek the traitor? In the M9 show, the question for new watchers will be when will the Nein realise that Essek is the traitor? When Essek meets the Nein, the countdown starts ticking; people will know that he is a danger. He is manipulating them. He is going to hurt them. Will the Nein realise before it's too late? But then Essek starts really befriending them, showing more of his loneliness and vulnerability, and... I think the mood will shift. Oh, shit, he really cares about them, doesn't he? What will the Nein do if they find out? Do I even want them to find out? What if they reject him and it makes him worse? He can't keep this up much longer, this is unbearable, they're going to find out - OH FUCK THEY'RE FINDING OUT -
It's such a fascinating choice and I think it goes to show that adaptation is an art form in itself! The actual events in the world will be the same, or at least very similar, but a new format means you can show those events in a totally new way and create a completely different tone! Narrative structure is the fucking coolest! I'm so excited for this show!

demanding a series in the same vein (heh, vein) as Dexter/Hannibal wherein a prolific serial killer plays cat & mouse with the police--except the serial killer in question is a preteen schoolgirl. this would make for compelling television due to the fact that middle school frequently causes girls to become deranged, and more media should reflect this
