Class Feature Friday: Battle Leader (Starfinder Archetype)

Small announcement, folks: After today’s entry, the Starfinder Archetypes, which served as the basis for PF2 archetypes, will be moved into the regular weekly rotation rather than being limited to CFF. There’s enough of them now and the decision for them to be CFF entries was made back before Pathfinder Second Edition was announced. And now there’s a Starfinder Second Edition on the way too! Anyway, on with the entry!

As long as there have been militaries, there have been commanders there to keep their cool, analyze the situation, and issue commands. This has remained true through the Bronze Age to the present day, and will likely remain true into the far future.

There are many different styles of leadership, but today we will be focusing the style common to the individual squads of the Veskarium’s militaries, an adaptation of the ancient vesk tradition of the Battle Leader!

Battle Leaders have their basis in the teachings of the conquerer-god Darmoritosh, and as such they focus on momentum in battle, rewarding victory against individual foes with praise and new orders to direct those under them to even greater heights.

In other words, this is an interesting flavor of the classic “marshal” rpg trope, a military leader whose function is to buff allies with orders and commands, so it’s fun to see that realized in some way outside of the solider class, though you can always combine the two as well.

The core ability of this path is the battle leader’s ability to react to an ally downing or critically wounding a foe and issuing their allies an order afterwards, bolstering their ability to act in other ways. When they start down this path, they learn one such order, which can range from enhanced damage on their next turn, greater speed, enhanced focus on skills or resistance, giving them a moment to recover, helping them stay alert, help them overcome afflictions, and helping them reposition. Some of these affect all allies, while others affect only the one that made the triggering attack.

As they grow in power, they can choose to forgo various abilities of their vocation in favor of learning either a new order, or to learn to better utilize an order they already have, increasing it’s effect.

Eventually, they also learn how to invoke two benefits of orders at once, granting allies even greater benefits.

Naturally, this archetype works best with more militant classes (especially vanguard with their occasional ability to have extra reactions in a single turn), but it can work well with pretty much anyone, especially if your build doesn’t have a lot of use for reactions normally. Also consider pairing it with a buffing support build such as a biohacker, mystic, and other spellcasters. The fact you can choose between your normal class abilities and additional benefits from the archetype is a nice touch as well.

You can’t put your life in another person’s hands without trusting them, and that’s exactly what happens in a military squad. Exactly what style of leadership your battle leader has is up to you, but you should probably roleplay them getting to know their various party members to better reflect their bond with the party.

Forgoing the life of a merchant, the witchwyrd Albonsai instead runs a mercenary company, where she is not afraid of getting mixed up in the fight as well. Unlike other witchwyrds her underlings seemingly keep her secrets out of loyalty rather than binding legal contract, though she also typically offers her best prices to her kin.

A raxilite delegate has long trusted their bodyguard team to protect them, but on their most recent assignment, they hire the party as an auxiliary force. The main team, however, is a very tight-knit group, and are mistrusting of the newcomers, a rift that would-be assassins could exploit if not closed.

The party originally formed when their military commander brought them together after being discharged from the military, giving them a chance to put their training to work in making their way after the war. Even when he passed on, the group stayed together… that is until they received a recording, seemingly from their commander, alive and well, despite having seen him die.

enter october, a traumatised fifteen year old with powers that they can't control, on the run from what seven and merrick quickly realise is the sequel to their own programme, who is being hunted by the remains of the perennial empire, now a desperate and cruel militia.

being forced at last to confront the horrors that they both witnessed and caused, and all the ways that's fragmented them and brought them closer together, seven and merrick have to navigate protecting their teen charges, keeping their ship running, escaping from the perennials and not murdering each other along the way.

2. what was your original concept for this character? how did playing them change that concept?

a ways back, i originally had this very loose idea that was a warlock with a theater inclined patron that i would name after the very basic concept of satine from mooulin roouge. i wanted a character who had a tenuous relationship with a patron that sort of viewed life as a play, or was a playwright, something like that. but obviously that changed before i sat down to play her because i don't think warlock was in the cards :3 and what i wanted in a character changed by the time we got closer to starting.

i do think playing satine in a few sessions has definitely cemented my confidence in the decision to play him a long ways from that concept, since she's come such a long way. playing him has like definitely helped me find his earnest boldness and like figuring out how to balance a more reserved, serene demeanor with like, frequent interaction with the world around her. i think the very first incarnation of satine in my brain was a lot more 'down a rough path' than he is now, which is nice... for him...! ;LGKSDG';SDFSGKF

12. how have they altered their body? piercings, tattoos, biohacks, or other modifications—anything. why (or why not) did they (or someone else) make those changes?

SO since this satine is a construct who's only technically existed for a couple years now, she hasn't made the time to invest in many piercings on his own :o at least, so far anyway!! but one thing that is of note is the two f-hole tattoos that satine has running down his ribs.

prior to being reconstructed, satine aleth told refrain about wanting to get those tattooed if they found an artist they connected with. obviously no one found the time to do that before (drags finger across neck), so refrain left the impressions there in ink when he rebuilt his body. and now he has these cute permanent cello f-holes over the rib cage, which are so cute. i think she really really likes them too, which is definitely a subconscious carryover from the last life.

i think she likes piercings too, esp since refrain had a cute labret and violence has some too. but hasn't gotten any yet! maybe janvi can help her choose one that will be easy to maintain, he he he

aw good question :( i think satine has faith in life and the world. even when he's been more afraid of anything, the world has given back to him and made sure to look after him. she's always wound up back in the arms of security, and someone showed her love. it's totally a matter of circumstance that's thrown her this way and that but like... the choices he's seen people make to do the right thing (as well as the right thing could be done) and treat her well is always a 'made choice.' you know? so people keep her faith high. he assumes the best as much as he's able to.

Races Among the Stars 6: Strix

Long ago on lost Golarion, the strix, a race of humanoids with birdlike wings, dwelled. Though best known in the Inner Sea for a certain isolated colony’s clash with the nation of Cheliax, their people were actually originally from Arcadia, where they once served, and later left behind, the mysterious and imperialistic syrinx.

In the time of Starfinder, much of this has been forgotten, either due to the passage of time or the vexing obscurement of the Gap, and now the Strix find their primary home in underground fortress cities on the Fullbright side of Verces.

Much like their ancient counterparts, strix are mistrustful of other peoples, which leads to some interpreting their insular nature as hiding some dark secret. However, once someone gets to know them, they share how magnanimous they truly are.

 Physically, strix resemble elves or half-elves with skin tones ranging from those familiar to humans to dusky blues, grays, and blacks; avian feet complete with talons; clawed hands; and mighty wings on their back. However, despite their similarities to other humanoids, their body structures continue to bear the mark of the avian. For example, their eyes barely move in their sockets and are milky white, while their necks can crane,twist and turn unnervingly to bring their gaze to bear in much the same manner as owls.

 The strix, once one gets past their exterior, are actually a highly communal people, something that puts them at odds with the individualistic Verthani that share the planet with them. Such a focus on personal journeys over the needs of others tends to exhaust most strix, so those that do choose to leave tend to leave the planet entirely, often forming aeries elsewhere or bonding with like-minded crews aboard starships, where all are expected to work together most of the time.

Interestingly, strix are quick to adopt new technologies, but are generally mistrustful of magical solutions, perhaps from some ancient cultural mistrust of spellcasters, be they human, syrinx, or some other species.

 Strix tend to be agile and cunning, but lack interaction skills outside of their own kind.

They have also developed keen night vision from their underground homes, not just piercing the darkness, but also easily picking up all sorts of minor details in the dark.

Though somewhat ungainly on the ground, strix are naturals in the air with their powerful wings.

They also learn the dangers of trusting their senses when magic might be abound, making it easier to spot illusions.

Their knack for technology also allows them to disassemble and build devices with surprising speed.

 Agile and intelligent, operative is a solid option for these winged warriors, who can use their familiarity in darkness and flight to make the most of a situation. Similarly, ranged soldiers, solarians, vanguards, and nanocytes are also good options for them. Their focus on technology makes them good biohackers, mechanics, and even technomancers: the one magical discipline they seem to halfway trust. Some may even become evolutionists as long as the path they take isn’t obviously magical. Envoys may be difficult due to weakness in charisma, but is still possible if they focus on the skill side of things. Spellcasting classes are where strix hesitate, though many of them are good choices for them. Even still, strix mystics, precogs, and witchwarpers may believe their power is more curse than blessing, or else perhaps be oddities among their kind that appreciate magic.

 That about does it for today, but I was delighted to see the strix return in Starfinder, just as I am with every other race from the past that makes it in. This also marks the last playable species from the Pact Worlds book as well!

on a more philosophical level, though, his devotion is to the dynasty and the luxon above all else. he truly believes that he can do good for his country by being the one who does all the shitty shady stuff

hes good at dragonchess, pickpocketing, weaving, and a bunch of other stuff that he's picked up over the years. he's a man of many talents, and not all of them came from his job
