Advice for Young Black Goths/Alts:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
β€” Know who you are!
I won't lie to you. Being Black and also a Goth is tough road to walk. The Black community will call you all sorts of names. On the other hand, there will be people in the Goth scene that will nitpick and bully everything about you. As your Big Sistah Goth, here's my advice (that I learned the HARD way). You have to know yourself. You must be concrete in who you are.
I remember hearing this advice and feeling confused. I wondered what that meant and how to do this? In retrospect, I was completely overthinking the concept (I wish I could go back to young me and just pat her on the head gently). It's simple, really (I say to Teen!Me). You know what you like and what you don't like. Lean into this! DON'T LET ANYONE TAKE THIS AWAY FROM YOU. And there will be a lot that will try, Goth and Non-Goth.
If you encounter someone online that says you're a poseur because you like Motionless in White or Deftones, BLOCK them instantly. Don't argue with them. Just ignore them.
β€” There's nothing you can do that will stop you from being Black.
When your family and friends call you 'white washed', ignore them. Being Black isn't something you can take on or off. It's in your DNA. Just focus on honoring the sacrifices of our ancestors and ignore everyone else that criticizes you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
β€” You can embrace your culture AND your subculture.
As a teen I was put into a double-bind where I couldn't bring all myself to the Goth scene nor my local community. This caused me to feel as though I had to hide aspects of myself to fit in. NEVER DO THIS. You have every right to be proud of your ancestry and heritage as well as your unique spooky style. Incorporate your heritage into your Goth lifestyle! Wear your braids and Afro with pride! This applies to all BIPOC Goths/Alt folk. Maybe you're Samoan? Wear your ie lavalava in your outfit.
β€” Stop fighting for acceptance and create your own circle.
I fought so hard trying to win over the acceptance of the Black community and the Goth community. I learned the hard way, that some people will never change. The Black community will never accept us. And, sometimes the local Goth scene is toxic and irredeemable. And sometimes calling out predators and abusive people in the scene will do nothing but paint a target on your back. In retrospect, I wasted time trying to make toxic people love and accept me. I should've spent my time creating my own circle consisting of people that rock with my entire vibe, no conditions.
When I acknowledged this, I realized that I didn't need their acceptance. Neither do you. You know who you are and that's enough. There are people that will love you as you are! If those folks haven't come, just wait.
β€œAs you get older you will gain a bit more control over everything. Don't let anyone, even your parents, break you. Find good people who care about you and surround yourself with just them. If you can't find them at first, find good music and fall into it, let it hold you until they come.” β€” Davey Havok of AFI
Tumblr media Tumblr media
β€” Surround yourself with things that bring you joy.
In college my art professor said to me, "The way to be a successful artist is to surround yourself with things that bring you joy". I'd make a small change to that statement and say that's the way to be healthy human being! You honestly, DO NOT need the Goth scene to be a Goth. You don't need the Goth scene to validate your clothing, accept you, befriend you, tell you what music to like, nor how to live your lifestyle in order to be authentically YOU. Actually, you don't even need to label yourself Goth! Be you. That is enough.

2023-25 West End Alt Costumes
Hey y'all! I've already talked about the new alt costumes a few times in different places, but felt like it would be easiest to make one big post about this. If you haven't already, I'd suggest reading this post from the day the cast was announced breaking down potential color assignments for each.
Tumblr media
Color assignments
First off, a few costumes we can reasonably assume: - A silver swing costume has been in progress. This should be Meg Dixon-Brasil's. - Naomi Alade has glitter eyeshadows in green, red, and orange as well as her palettes in those shades, so we can assume she has orange. - We've also seen teal pants hanging up in the alts' dressing room. They seem to be the same design as Monique Ashe-Palmer and Ellie Jane Grant have. By elimination, these should be Gabriella Stylianou's; they're also up on the rack by her Aragon and Seymour costumes.
Tumblr media
The two big questions (aka, what is going on with pink alt) - First of all, we saw the top for a pink alt hanging in the dressing room. This was similar to Natalie Pilkington's, but not identical. When seeing that @lightleckrereins and I initially determined it could be either an altered version of Natalie's, or a costume for for Hannah Lowther. That still seems to hold true. - Hannah Lowther also posted her makeup. It includes two pink glitters (a hot pink and light, everyone else has just gotten one for each so shouldn't be two Howard), two pink lipsticks, and two pink palettes. One of those lipsticks is the go-to assigned Howard lipstick while the other is their go-to assigned pink alt lipstick. One of the pink palettes lines up more with pink alt than Howard. She also didn't have any lipsticks that I'd expect for teal/black, or any nudes/silver makeup that would work for black; the Parr palette could possibly be used for teal but doesn't quite work and seems less likely. - Natalie....also seems to have pink alt?? She posted a photo of herself in what is definitely pink alt makeup from this week. It's definitely new/current; it shows her and Meg in their new dressing room.
I feel like it's likely that they're both in pink alt, but of course this is Six so we'll have to wait on promo photos to know for sure.
Changed or new variations I've also gotten some asks about the possibility of changed variations. We already know teal will have pants, so we can rule that out. It seems like Naomi will be wearing orange for A/S/H/P, which is roughly what it's been used for with pants, so it seems very unlikely to see anything there. Meg Dixon-Brasil should have the same silver alt as Shakira Simpson, with an open skirt, full Cleves, and Parr (I've talked about why I think Esme's Boleyn skirt was a one-off here). That brings us to, again, the pink alt question. Some Hannah Lowther seems to have pink alt, she'd be wearing it for A/B/S/C, which the open skirt isn't a perfect fit for but is still easier/more obvious than a new variation. As swing, Natalie Pilkington throws a little more into question if she is in fact in pink. However, she should still be able to wear her Seymour and Parr principal costumes, so I'd expect her to continue to wear those and then pink for A/B/C/H. That's exactly how pink alt has been used in the past, so I don't think it's likely that that would change or necessitate a new variation. My only question (again, assuming they're both pink alt) would be if Hannah or Natalie get a change purely so they're not in exact duplicates, just like Natalie got for her black alt during the 21-22 UK Tour when her and Cassy Lee had duplicates. However, the chances of the West End getting to a double pink alt show where they really can't move things around and have to send them both on in pink alt is a lot less likely, particularly considering that they (presumably) both have two principal costumes as well. So...still considering this highly unlikely (but hey a girl can dream)
Other questions/notes - What the hell is going on with potential double pink - Assuming double pink, is black alt is being phased out entirely. This could just be a scenario where it's more logistically convenient for Natalie to seemingly keep S/P/pink, but in another scenario maybe they'd have black alt again. Or it might just be being phased out entirely - it's more simple than most of the other designs and doesn't quite fit into the design continuum. I have no good answer for this, so we'll just have to see (although my black-alt-cosplaying self would love to see it return eventually) - If Natalie Pilkington will still wear her Seymour/Parr (with black or pink). I think this feels like an obvious yes, but we'll see. - I realize I didn't post the full makeup breakdown for all of them. I'll do that in the next few weeks.

The Black Alternate curse
Tumblr media
Here we are, back again with the third and final instalment in this trilogy x
Within my time of being in the six fandom, I've begun to notice a strange, consistent pattern with actresses given specific alternate costumes. It seems that (if given this costume) the actress wearing it is open to more situations arising concerning them. Be it emergency covers, or early departures, all matter of situations have befallen these queens.
In regards to the Black costume, we are presented with a curse that seems to guarantee actresses who wear it a longer contract &/or, a full-time return to six in the future, making it in some ways similar to the Orange curse! Unlike our previous 2 entries, this curse has been ruthless throughout it's course, claiming every single actress to ever don the costume!
They include... (Context: Standard SIX contract=1 yr)
Grace Mouat: Swing, Alt S/H Time within queendom: 1 yr 1 mo
Rachel Rawlinson: Swing Time within queendom: 2 yr 1 mo
Collette Guitart: Super Swing Time within queendom: 2 yr 5 mo
Cassandra Lee: Alt A/C Time within queendom: 2 yr 7 mo
Liv Alexander: Alt A/B/C, Swing, Anne Boleyn Time within queendom: 3 yr 2 mo
Mallory Maedke: Alt B/S/H, Alt A/S/H Time within queendom: 3 yr 5 mo
Karis Okla: Swing Time within queendom: 4 yr 1 mo
Natalie Pilkington: Alt A/C/P, Swing (x2), Alt S/P) Time within queendom: 5 yr 5 mo
The record for longest affected by the curse is currently held by.. Natalie Pilkington! (Tldr: If ur wanting a long run in six, PRAY FOR THE GOTH COSTUME!)

Flyer for the first Sista Grrrl Riot. Photo by Honeychild Coleman, 1997.
*Exerpt taken from the article "Sista Grrrl: The Feminist Mother of Afro-punk" written by Taiwo Adebowale on the Catalyst*
"In the late 90s, Tamar Kali-Brown, Simi Stone, Honeychild Coleman, and Maya Sokora met up and created the Sista Grrrl Riots in response to the Riot Grrrl movement. Unlike the previous movement, the Sista Grrrl Riots were made by black women for black women. Many former Riot Grrrls attended sold-out shows at popular clubs such as Brownies and CBGB. The voices of the ignored were reverberated by the Sista Grrrls. Distorted guitars, bombastic drums, and the voices of female punks were amplified through the shows. This counterculture liberated black female punks from restricting their self-expression. The Sista Grrrl Riots created a community that challenged the notion that punk is reserved for those who are white. As Riot Grrrls, these women were rarely heard, but as Sista Grrrls, their sound and statement spilled out of venues and changed punk forever."
